Dolphins muscle up against Jets

The Dolphins went into the Meadowlands to face the NY Jets at MetLife Stadium on the NFL’s very first Black Friday Game. I loved it because it was our Dolphins we got to watch with no distractions from any other NFL games being played. While the NY Jets aren’t a winning team, they have the type of defense that has given even elite opposing offenses trouble, so my feeling is this was a somewhat a measuring stick game for our team. Could our offense play well against a strong defensive team? The answer was mixed, a little of YES and a little of NO. Our running game was a bright spot, both starter Raheem Mostert and backup Jeff Wilson had success against the Jets. Mostert tallied 20 carries good for 94 yards and a 4.7 YPC average which is a bit below his season average, but excellent considering it was against the Jets defense. Jeff Wilson added 11 carries for 56 yards and a nice 5.1 yards per carry. QB Tua Tagovailoa played well most of the game with the exception of 2 bonehead throws, he finished 21-30, 243 yards, 1 TD, 2 INT’s, one of them a costly pick six. If not for the heroic 99 yard INT return by S Jevon Holland, that pick 6 could have had more impact on this game, but in truth, the Hell Mary pick six took the wind out of the Jets aircrafts wings.

To be fair, the Jets offense was not in a good place coming into this game. The Jets brass finally pulled the plug on QB Zach Wilson, and one could question the timing of the move. Believe me, I’m not advocating for Zach Wilson, but they could have made the change much earlier if they didn’t believe in him, and at 4-6, the Jets were not out of it. I find it hard to believe many Jets fans were looking to Tim Boyle to be the savior of their season, but that’s precisely the position the Jets put him in. In 2022, it was Zach Wilson that beat the Dolphins at MetLife 40-17, so maybe one more game wouldn’t have been such a bad idea. It’s possible Aaron Rodgers has so much influence on what the Jets do that they put his understudy in for this game. Tim Boyle wasn’t all that bad, and you could make the case that the Hell Mary was just a stroke of bad luck, mainly because it was. I don’t think either Jets QB would have won on Friday, because the real hero was the Dolphins defense, the one we have long waited to see.

We all know OLB Jaelan Phillips is done for the season with a torn achilles injury, yet another non-contact season ending injury for the NFL to ponder. Before Jaelan Phillips exited the game, he left his mark with 4 tackles, 3 TFL, 1 sack, 1 pass defensed, 2 QB hits. Phillips was really coming on and playing his best football, so it’s with sadness that we say goodbye to him before finishing out the season. The blessing is that we do have a couple of capable players behind him to replace him. I know most of us are down on Emmanuel Ogbah, and of course his playing time could still be limited because of Andrew Van Ginkel, but this really is a great opportunity for Ogbah to reclaim his status as a professional pass rusher. Ogbah does have 4 sacks this season with only 10 total tackles, this while playing only 21% of the snaps on defense. He’s as fresh as he will ever be, and this is a perfect chance to resurrect his career. It absolutely hurts this team to lose a rising star like Jaelan Phillips, but having Andrew Van Ginkel and Emmanuel Ogbah as depth is wonderful.

Let’s get back to the defense. The Dolphins secondary at this very moment now looks to be one of the top units in the NFL. The Jalen Ramsey effect is startling. 4 games, 3 INT’s. The pass rush seems so much better when receivers aren’t getting open lickety split. Xavien Howard is healthy, and CB Kader Kohou now looks like a beast again playing the slot, and of course, it’s fantastic to Jevon holland healthy along with DeShon Elliott. This great secondary absolutely transforms the pass rush. QB’s now facing this secondary can’t really throw to either side confidently, and while Kader Kohou might have shown some holes out on the boundary, he looks more than comfortable to be back on the inside where he made hay last season. The Dolphins were relentless Friday afternoon, tormenting the Jets with 7 sacks, 8 tackles for loss, 2 INT’s (one for a TD), and 1 forced fumble. THAT’s how you impose your will. It was something to see, and hopefully this continues to trend, especially against the teams that actually are a threat offensively. No offense to Breece Hall of Garrett Wilson, both who are excellent players, but Tim Boyle was not the answer, especially burdened by their porous offensive line. I feel for both Hall and Wilson who must be so frustrated, but only so much.

I’m not going to focus on next weeks quite yet, that happens Friday, but just enjoy this victory. Although not all the things we wanted to see, for example see our offense play at a high level against a top NFL defensive unit, we got most of it. Tua Tagovailoa wasn’t bad, he just wasn’t great, maybe not even good. If you’re throwing to the flat, and I’ve seen some great QB’s make the same throw, same mistake, you had better put some mustard on that throw when the defender is within 5 yards and closing. I didn’t hate the playcall, I hated the execution. It looked like a lazy throw as if there weren’t a defender for 10 yards near the receiver, but it’s just one throw. As it turned out, as I’ve already mentioned, Jevon Holland stepped up and made the play of the day, the 99 yard Hell Mary pick six TD INT. It was glorious! Great win, and a great team win. This how good teams win in the NFL, if one unit doesn’t get it done, the other unit picks it up and takes the W.

Ryder’s breakdown on JPP showed some positive on what he will bring to the team. I like the signing.

I was kind of ‘meh’ on the JPP news yesterday, but after seeing Ryder’s breakdown today, I very much like the signing.

INDEED! It took a little bit to get it all together, but it was worth the wait.

Now we’re a top-3 Offense AND a top-10 Defense… NOBODY wants to see us now!

Miami converted 11 of its 16 third down conversions against the Jets (68.8%). Miami and Kansas City (58.3% in Week 4) are the only teams to convert over 50 percent of their third down attempts in a game against the Jets this season.

Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa finished 10-for-12 for 160 yards on third down. It’s the most passing yards on third down against the Jets since Nov. 10, 2019.

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Tagovailoa’s nine first downs on 12 pass attempts is tied for the most first-down conversions on third-down passes in a game since Sept. 12, 2021.

  7. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Defensively, the Dolphins allowed just two offensive first downs in the first half and 12 total for the game. The 12 total offensive first downs tied the Jets’ lowest mark this season.

Of the Jets two first-half first downs, one came on a defensive penalty on the Dolphins and the other came on a run as the Jets failed to record a passing first down in the first half.

  8. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Miami held the Jets to 29 rushing yards on 10 carries. It’s the fewest rushing yards allowed by Miami in a game since Dec. 11, 2017 vs. New England, when they allowed 25.

The Jets’ 29 rushing yards is their fewest in a game since Nov. 26, 2006, when they had 27 rushing yards against Houston.

The Dolphins have allowed just 65 rushing yards in their last two games. Miami and Chicago are the only two teams that have held an opponent under 40 rushing yards twice this season.

  9. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Since Week 8, the Dolphins are the only NFL team that has not allowed a rushing touchdown. All but one other team (Minnesota) has given up at least two.

Since Week 2, the Dolphins (788) have allowed the fewest rushing yards of any team and are second in opponents yards per rush attempt (3.4).

  10. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa (11,192) threw for 243 yards and passed Jay Fiedler (11,040) for the fourth-most passing yards in team history.

Waddle’s 3,062 receiving yards through his first three seasons are already the most in franchise history with 6 games to go.

Hill recorded his 10th receiving touchdown and is the first Dolphins player since Mike Wallace (2014) to post double-digit touchdown receptions in a season.

Six different players contributed at least a half-sack as the Dolphins totaled 7.0 sacks in the contest. Miami now has two games (vs. Giants, at Jets) with 7.0 sacks in the same season for the first time since 1998.

  11. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

When safety Jevon Holland turned a Jets Hail Mary attempt into a 99-yard interception return for a touchdown (third-longest interception return in franchise history), he traveled 124.4 yards, the most distance traveled by a ball carrier on a scrimmage play this season, according to Next Gen Stats.

  12. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Of the 17 players in the NFL with over 600 rushing yards this season, only Mostert has a yards per carry average above 5.0. He also leads the league with 13 rushing touchdowns.

Additionally, Mostert’s 4.33 average rush yards gained after coming within one yard of the nearest defender is the third-best rate in the NFL this season, per Next Gen Stats.

It’s weird, my first reaction when watching Hard Knocks and seeing Phillips go down, was why is the camera staying with him, shouldn’t it be following the play? Dayum, Jaelan Phillips’ injury and subsequent fallout hit me harder than I thought it would. Wishing him the very best in his recovery. He’s a good guy!

Three things that have left an impression on me…

    1) Darrell Bevell is a very thoughtful and kind dude. These first two episodes of Hard Knocks have revealed as much about the man. He’s a pro’s pro and a player’s coach. Really happy he’s with us. He almost reminds me of Dan Campbell when he was with us on Hard Knocks back in ’12.

    2) Bradley Chubb is nothing like I thought he would be… thus, preconceptions really are worthless when ya don’t really know somebody. He’s a great teammate, a cool cat, and is driven.

    3) Coach McDaniel and his foul mouth over the last two episodes! I LOVE IT! Never expected it being he has the smooth and intellectual/quirky demeanor we’re all used to in public interviews.

  25. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Was hard to get to know Philllips better on Hard Knocks and then watch him go down. I wonder if the episode was meant to focus on him all along or after the injury they saw they had enough vid shot of him to make it feature him.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I firmly believe it’s the latter, Stanger. It made for a compelling episode.

    • Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

Well the quote from MM wasn’t when he said to Phillips, ‘this is your time, your game, to make a statement.’ And, of course, that’s paraphrased.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Had Phillips delivered a ‘nothing burger’ or didn’t get injured in the game, there wouldn’t be much of a story for this last episode of Hard Knocks.

There are cameras and mics EVERYWHERE, so as to catch EVERYTHING… hence the concerns of distractions.

Next week, there will be another compelling story… being nothing escapes the ‘eye (and ear) in the sky’. That’s also why it takes a few days to establish a story… to sift through all the data to create a story.

Looking at that lengthy injury list,
    which doesn’t even include Phillips,
all of a sudden it seems like a long way to go

I think we can beat Washington and Tennessee
with about half of those guys on the list not playing.

But I’m not certain we can beat anybody without Tua.
And Tyreek can’t miss multiple games either.

I hope Tyreek’s not wearing down. He’s had a lot of reps.

    AVG is #24
    Chubb is #33

This is why we signed JPP.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

So while the loss of Jaelan Phillips certainly sucks, I’m pretty sure we can collectively account for his production.

This Defense of ours is NOT to be funked with.

I love those numbers you posted above about our OLBs.
JPP not only has 95 career sacks,
but he’s as big and strong as hell,
so we should be fine with him and Ogbah filling in for Phillips.

Ogbah is the only DE on our roster. He’s a true DL.

  41. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Miami is the only team with 6 players with at least 4 sacks.

  42. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Buffalo has to stew over that overtime loss during their bye week.
Then when they all amped up,
    they play KC.
Here’s hoping they take out their frustration on the Chiefs.
That would be perfect for them to lose to Philly so they can’t catch us,
then beat KC to help us out for the top seed.

  43. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

Winning out should be our goal. This would leave us with the best conference record, except for possibly Kansas City, and a #2 seed. All playoff games, except for KC, would have to go through Miami.

Let’s help ourselves and not worry about anyone else. Just a thought…lol.

  44. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

My other thought is “rest” our injured for at least the next two games, against Washington and Tennessee, before the Jets. If the Jets lose another (one more) game before Rodgers comes back (Falcons and Texans, before us), I can’t really see why he would actually want to play in another game this year with no hope of the team making the playoffs. It would make no sense.

With our D playing the way it is, and winning games for us, we can let our O (especially the OL) heal up before the the last 3 or 4 games. The only issue with that is a healed OL will then need time to gel. A conundrum for sure.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

One game at a time. What you’re suggesting is falling into trap games… meaning looking past them. The NFL will kill you doing that. You play to win every game with whom ever can help you do that.

You can’t save players for later when you haven’t accomplished the goal. You can’t predict injuries. If guys can go you play them at 8-3 leading the division by 2.5 games. The first order of business is winning the division. That’s a guaranteed home game.

    • Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

      LMAO…NO, that is your suggestion.

If you read my post at 9:27 pm it CLEARLY states we should “win out” and “help ourselves”. You must have missed that…lol.

Also, game and player management (maybe you don’t quite understand what a leadership role entails) are aspects of MM’s coaching style and what he has done all season and last. He takes a “conservative” approach with players and their injuries WITHOUT rushing them back. MY VIEW, which you seem to have missed, as well, is to continue that approach.

Put your healthiest players out there, as our talent is the deepest it’s been in years and let those that are marginally ready or worse, rest another week. Some on this blog have also suggested that with Achane and other players.

Carry on with your misinformation and putting words in my mouth. Just ridiculous…lol.

      • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Not my argument, but you said one thing and then suggested the opposite, which is what Tim called you on. He is right, even though you “clearly” stated we should win out (as if that was ever NOT the goal, SMH) then you suggest sitting guys and not playing as hard as possible. Which I agree, is falling into the “trap” of thinking you don’t have to play your best to beat “lesser teams”

      • Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

Wrong, that was never the suggestion. Letting “our guys heal up” is the “suggestion” and an approach MM has used for two seasons. LOL!!!

      • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

“My other thought is “rest” our injured for at least the next two games, against Washington and Tennessee”

Noone put these words “in your mouth” YOU typed them.

We have 11 starters “injured” we should sit them “For at least” the next two games.

YOU should read what you write..

      • Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

I am very clear what I wrote. Perhaps, comprehension is another issue. I never said anything about “11 starters.” Please quote me on that.

Using MM’s approach, which you clearly have glossed over twice is a comprehension issue, not mine…lol.

      • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

OK, are we going to start calling each other names and impugning each other’s intelligence or reading comprehension? You wrote what you wrote. You can try to walk it back, but it is very clear.

      • Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

Where did I call anyone names?!!! Again, putting “words in my mouth.”

Making erroneous conclusions and suggesting I stated something different that what I wrote…is the definition on “putting words in my mouth.”

I’m trying to understand why. So, I’m suggesting you DON’T understand what I wrote. It’s that simple.

      • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Hmmm seems you have reading comprehension issues, which explains this entire argument. YOU don’t understand what YOU wrote.

I did not say you started calling names. I ASKED you “are we going to start calling each other names AND impugning each other’s intelligence or reading comprehension” which is exactly where you went not once but multiple times. My reading comprehension is excellent. Carry on. I will just give you a rest and scroll past for a while now. No need to reply because I will not be able to comprehend what you write anyway.

      • Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

“My other thought is “rest” our injured for at least the next two games,”

This was my opinion and I’m not walking it back. Nor, am I going to “suggest” or interpret it to mean that we should not do our best, play our best, or fall into some sort of “trap game.”

Clueless how this has been become an issue for some of you. Suggesting that I would start calling people names at the lack of understanding or “misinterpretation” of what I wrote. It speaks to a lack of comprehension, in my mind. That is not impugning anyone. That is my opinion and I’m not walking it back.

It’s called player management and what good coaches, like MM, do.

        Carry on….lol.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Then glanced at Rock’s post about having one more IR Return slot. Why are they limited? Guys get hurt all the time, it’s a fact. Limiting this is silly

      • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

They changed the rules last season to allow UP TO 8 players to be designated to return. If you remember IR used to be you were done for the year. Last year they increased the amount of players that can return up to 8.

The reason that you can’t just do it unlimited is to prevent “stashing” of players and circumventing roster size rules.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Rock, you can bet dollars to donuts a guy like Belicheat would put 10 guys on IR to both have for later use and stop opponents from acquiring their services. The salary cap would limit how much you could use the IR that way, but certain teams would definitely abuse it.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

It’ll be nice to have another bigger back since Wilson is due for another injury in a game or two. We discovered our inside run game against the Jest, and I’d love to see that continue.

  48. Wyoming85's avatar Wyoming85 says:

As the NFL is required to give a 12 day notice if they are going to flex out of a Monday night football game, and today marks 11 days until the Monday night Miami Dolphins vs Tennessee Titans game, that matchup will stay as a MNF game.

The thing about only having one return designation left is we’re almost at the end of the season. If they put someone on IR at this point they are unlikely to designate them to return. More likely they will just keep them on the active roster if they think they will heal before they are done playing.

  52. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Rock – I was just thinking of it from the point of view of keeping up the level of competition and gameplay, the NFL is better when the better players play. You’re right though, the roster ramifications would be taken advantage of for sure.

Here you go, Mike. This headline says ‘woman’.

From the same article: “Miller’s connection to the victim was not immediately clear. He is wanted on a charge of assault against a pregnant person.”

It looks like perhaps ‘person’ is in the verbiage of the actual charge against him. So you can still be outraged if you’d like- just at the way the law is written instead 😂🤣

Know what I think? I think if we were to play the Eagles or Chefs* this week instead of when we had played them, we’d win rather handily… and that goes for the Bills as well.

Our Defense is now the #7 in the NFL, up from around #27. Getting Ramsey back was huge, but the players finally seem to have a firm grasp in year 1 of the Fangio Defense, unlike earlier in the season.

On the Offensive side of the ball, our greatest weakness has been an injury-riddled O-Line. Guess what, the light seems to have come on for Eich, and our depth players keep getting better and better with each game.

We’re going to demolish the overrated Cowboys on Christmas Eve, we’re going to crush the Ravens (making Tua 3-0 career against them) on New Year’s Eve, and we’re going to destroy the hapless Bills at home in the new year… BARRING SERIOUS INJURIES, of course.

Seldom am I this confident, but I feel we’re primed for a DEEP playoff run this year. And yes, I feel we can make it to the Super Bowl this season.

But first thing first: one game at a time. Never overlook the immediate opponent.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Totally agreed we can play with those teams, not sure we win handily, lol, but we can beat any team in the league if we play up to our potential.

We really do need to take it one game at a time. Luckily, even though I think a lot of us fans are taking the next few games for granted, I don’t think the team is. I think we have good focus.

I’m actually a little surprised to not see Tua higher on the highly accurate rate. That chart basically says Tua’s receivers get separation far more than anyone else’s, but his accuracy is not much above league average (assuming the redline is mean or median). His detractors would probably use this chart as a negative.

Although, honestly, I question the accuracy of these specific types of charts anyway.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I find it hard to believe all those QBs are throwing the ball more accurately than Tua. I mean, Josh Allen is throwing at the same accuracy rate? Come on.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Allen is near the lead league in percentage, and he and Tua aren’t far off in INTs, so maybe I’m just wrong.

Lamm not practicing. Will we be down to our 3rd string OT to start at LT?

Kind of surprised with all the OL injuries we are experiencing, we only have 1 rookie OT, 1 rookie OC and 1 2nd year OG on the practice squad. Seems we could have added a vet to the PS as a break glass incase.

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Maybe not but as things get tighter and yardage gets tougher, it might be nice to have a big target with playoff experience to take the pressure off Hill and Waddle, so they won’t need to take a hard hit to get every first down on 3rd and 6.
