2023 Season – Game 12 – Dolphins @ Commanders

Our 8-3 AFC East Division leaders travel to Washington this week to take on the 4-8 Washington Commanders. Yeah, still hard not to think Redskins, but it is what it is. The Commanders defense is dead last in the NFL, 32 of 32 allowing 29.2 points per game. This bodes well for our team, which is scoring 30.8 points per game. The bright spot for the Commanders is they appear to have a QB, potentially a franchise QB. Although his play has been uneven, QB Sam Howell has thrown for 3339 yards, 18 TD’s and 13 INT’s. That’s 162 more yards passing than our own Tua Tagovailoa for Howell, in his rookie season no less. Howell is also completing 66.5% of his passes, just a shade less than Tua at 69.8%. This is an opportunity for our offense to get back on track, but also a chance for our defense to continue to show that this is one of the top units in the NFL as we get closer to the playoffs.

It was a crushing blow last week when OLB Jaelan Phillips season ended after a non contact achilles injury. He was playing at a very high level, equal to the amount of hype he received before the season. Now, the forgotten man in this defense, DE/LB Emmanuel Ogbah moves very much to the forefront. Of course AVG, Andrew Van Ginkel will probably see more snaps now at OLB, Ogbah will most certainly see a lot more snaps than he has all season. The good thing is, Ogbah has fresh legs, and is completely healthy, playing nearly a 1/3 of the snaps this season (21%) compared to the usual 65-77% of the snaps in other years. Besides the pass rush, one thing that directly affects the pass rush is the pass coverage. Right now, our defense couldn’t be any better, with a healthy CB Xavien Howard on the left side and the scalding hot CB Jalen Ramsey on the right. Safeties Jevon Holland and DeShon Elliot round out this excellent secondary. Holland, of course, had the amazing “Hell Mary” 99 yard TD interception return on the last play of the first half against the NY Jets.

It seems as if we may be getting some players back on the offensive side, as RG Robert Hunt looks like he may be ready to play, although he may be on a snap count. It seems as if the entire team logged a LIMITED practice session yesterday, and it’s impossible to tell if that’s just precautionary, like injury maintenance or if that’s the best those injured players could manage. RB De’Von Achane looks like he’s going to be QUESTIONABLE unless he manages to get in a FULL practice today. The same goes for Raheem Mostert, although we’ve seen Mostert with the QUESTIONABLE designation for weeks and he still manages 20 + touches on offense. C Connor Williams returned last week and should be good to go this week as well. RG Liam Eichenberg played very well against a tough NY defensive front and if Hunt can’t go, I won’t be too concerned since Eichenberg is handling the job sufficiently. Hunt, incidentally, did suit up for the Jets game but did not play.

The Dolphins are now a 1/2 game behind the Baltimore Ravens who are 9-3 but have their BYE week this week. We’re ties with both Jacksonville Jaguars, and the Kansas City Chiefs, but we are currently the #4 seed in the AFC. We must win this week to continue to stay near the top of the conference. Nothing will help this team more than to play as many playoff games in our house as possible, considering besides the Eagles and the Cowboys who are in the NFC, we’re the only undefeated AFC team at home. Home is where we play our best football. On offense, we’re not a physical team, although we can and have run the ball well. We’re actually #2 in the NFL in rushing behind the Ravens, this despite the fact that we have nearly 100 less rushing attempts, 390 rushes for 1903 yards (4.9 YPC) for the Ravens while we have 292 rushes for 1597 yards (5.5 YPC). The Ravens are just a more physical team, they run the ball more, and their QB is a huge reason. Yes, they have a big, imposing RB in RB Gus Edwards, who has 590 yards on 141 rushes for 4.2 yards per carry. He’s a grinder, but the Ravens second leading rusher is their QB Lamar Jackson. Jackson has 574 yards rushing this season, but the Ravens alos have a weapon very similar to our own De’Von Achane, RB Keaton Mitchell. Mitchell is also a TD waiting to happen, he’s averaging 9.3 yards per carry, 29 carries for 269 yards and 2 TD’s rushing. De’Von Achane, for comparison has 39 carries for 461 yards and 5 TD’s rushing and Achane also has 2 TD’s receiving. The big question is though, do we see a healthy and productive Achane again this season or does he get shut down? In addition, we play the Ravens New Year’s Eve day in Week 17, and I believe that game will tell us an awful lot about our team going forward into the playoffs.

The Dolphins are the biggest road team favorites in the NFL this week, a hearty 9.5 point favorite. I don’t mention this because I’m a betting man, I’m not, but this is a game we should win, and absolutely need to. We need to clean up the turnovers. Our opponents have fumbled 20 times against us, 9 forced fumbles. OLB Bradley Chubb has 4 of them.We have 38 QB sacks on defense and have allowed only 18. That’s remarkable. We have the 3rd most sacks, behind the Bills (41) and the Ravens (47). On offense and sacks allowed, the Chiefs (referees) (14 sacks allowed) and the Bills (Josh Allen) (15 sacks sacks allowed) are the only teams better. We have 11 INT’s, Tua (10), and Mike White (1). We have fumbled 20 times, lost 12. We have one of the worst turnover differentials in the league at -5, we have 9 interceptions and 5 fumble recoveries for 14 takeaways, while on offense we have 11 interceptions and 9 fumbles lost for 19 turnovers. Tua and Mostert have bosh lost 3 fumbles, and I suppose we’re a bit lucky, because Tua has 10 fumbles this season. Both of these guys need to be more aware of ball security. If De’Von Achane can’t go this week, RB Jeff Wilson will share the lesser amount of carries with RB Raheem Mostert, as long as Mostert plays as expected.

    “ Factoidness

Everything you need to know about the imbalance of the AFC East this year:

The Patriots have scored 47 points in their five-game losing streak. Miami scored 45 Sunday in Washington.

The Jets, over their last seven games and one quarter, have scored four offensive touchdowns in their last 88 offensive drives. Miami scored five touchdowns in its nine drives at Washington.” – Peter King

  2. twicethethe's avatar twicethethe says:

    Per NFL News:

RB Derrick Henry is in the concussion protocol, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported, per a source. Henry exited Sunday’s loss to the Colts after sustaining a big hit in the fourth quarter.

  3. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Linebacker Jerome Baker, who left Sunday’s win in Washington with a knee injury after a first-half collision with teammate Brandon Jones, will get clarity on his situation when he gets an MRI on Monday.

Baker’s agent, Drew Rosenhaus, said on his weekly segment on WSVN-Fox 7 that “a lot is going to depend on the MRI. Mike McDaniel said the doctors don’t feel it’s season-ending. The X-rays were clean. Nothing that popped up on the X-ray. There is some thought it might be a medial collateral ligament injury. If that’s the case, in most instances, that is not surgical.”

Most MCL sprains typically heal in two to four weeks, though the most severe could take a bit longer.

      — Andrew Van Ginkel got the start opposite Bradley Chubb and ended up playing 84 percent of the defensive snaps. That was his second-highest percentage of the season, behind the 88 percent he played against New England in Week 2 when Phillips was out with a back injury.

      — While he got his fifth sack of the season, Emmanuel Ogbah again was used sparingly with 16 snaps (29 percent) and newcomer Jason Pierre-Paul was on the field for Washington’s final three plays of the game.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Riley looks good filling in for Baker, but Ogbah was the player who gave up the edge on the big run on 3rd and long early in the drive where Baker ended up getting hurt.

  4. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

De’Von Achane has played more than five snaps in four career games:

Week 3 against the Broncos: 233 scrimmage yards, four touchdowns
Week 4 against the Bills: 120 scrimmage yards, two touchdowns
Week 5 against the Giants: 165 scrimmage yards, one touchdown
Week 13 against the Commanders: 103 scrimmage yards, two touchdowns
Including the games in which Achane left early due to injuries, he has played in six games and has nine career touchdowns.

The only player in NFL history with more touchdowns in his first six career games was Hall of Famer Eric Dickerson in 1983 (10). Achane tied Hall of Famer Gale Sayers (1965) and Buffalo All-American star Ockie Anderson (1920), who both had nine touchdowns in their first six career games.

  6. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I’ve been a big critic of Crossman and the ST unit, but I gotta say, that excepting the Sanders misses, that unit has played pretty clean for awhile now.

  7. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

This was Hill’s fifth game this season with at least 150 receiving yards and a touchdown — which is a record for the most such games in a single season in NFL history.

Those two touchdowns were the 20th and 21st of Hill’s career that went for at least 60 yards — which ties him with Devin Hester for the third-most touchdowns of 60-plus yards in NFL history. Only DeSean Jackson (26) and Jerry Rice (23) have more.

Mostert had 19 career touchdowns in 75 regular season games entering 2023.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

MM apologized to Mostert in the offseason for not getting him the ball more last year, then add in the OL and Achane and you get the 4th wheel flying under the radar producing some great numbers

We have quite a few NFL fans on the footy forum I post on for my hometown team. I’m the only fin but their is a Bill! (ha ha)

Here’s what I posted this morning.

For the NFC, the Niners have played the 2 best teams in the NFC – the Eagles and the Cowboys, and have won by a combined score of 84-29. Assuming no more injuries to Purdy, it seems a massive reach to predict any other team to lift the Lombardi at this stage of the season.

For the AFC, the fins sit at #1 seed, but a Jags win on MNF puts them in #1 after GB came out on top @ Lambeau last night. This has created a bit of a logjam in the fight for HFA in the play-offs. I’m certainly not counting any aquatic chickens yet – we have three games to finish the season in Dallas (H), Ravens (A) and Bills (H), which will give us chance to dispel the narrative that we can only beat bad-medium teams. If we can do that, we may be in shape to make a decent play-off run. Ironically, I started following the Fins in Marino’s first year when he made the SB and lost to the niners. Sadly, even if by some miracle the Fins did make it to the big bash, I suspect the same fate would await. Karma is a bitch!

    • ukfinfan's avatar ukfinfan says:

Just in case this post comes across as unduly negative, I’m not. This has been the best season for a couple of decades and I’m enjoying it thoroughly. The wonderful thing about a rising team (which I would characterise us as) is that you never know where the ceiling is. We have so many of the characteristics of a championship team. The last one we need to add to our arsenal, for me, is a desire to impose our will. I am starting to see this a little, but too early in the process as yet.

Some staggering stats above, when Achane plays more than a few snaps

Both Tyreek and Tua said, when Achane is in the game the O is really dangerous, kind of a pick your poison of who to double between Hill, Waddle and Achane, so whoever isn’t doubled is getting the ball

  12. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Must suck (like I don’t remember these types of days) to be the 9-3 Cowboys looking up at the 6-6 Falcons who are currently in the playoffs if the season ended today.

  13. Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

I was watching the second touchdown from Tua to Tyreek from yesterday last night. The blocking was good, but Washington blitz, and Mostert at the last second shoved, the safety or cornerback just enough to give to a time to throw that. Subtle play, but that touchdown didn’t happen without Mostert doing that.

Belichick was known as a defensive genius, and his defense is still pretty damn good, especially considering he doesn’t have star players. No coach in NFL history has had sustained success without a top level QB. Aside : I saw his parents gravesite this weekend.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Belichick’s problem is he had complete control of personnel as GM/HC so he has to be graded not just on his record but how he drafted and the success of the team and the players they have. He’s been sucking eggs as a GM, so even he can’t compensate for his personnel errors with his coaching.

Bellicheat is a great coach…specifically defensively, but it is ALWAYS about the players. Much of the Pats’ success was due to their defensive structure and play. It wasn’t all Brady. Regardless, it’s still always about the players. All the great scheming a coach might do is still reliant on the players executing. Great coaching doesn’t overcome poor play but great play can overcome poor coaching.

I heard a guy on NFL radio today call in and try to embarass Pat Kirwan saying “you guaranteed the Dolphons would be a top 4 seed in the AFC! The fins are probably going to lose their last 3 and the Bills might win out!”

Which got me thinking. He’s not wrong…but the odds are so long.

That said, the Bills have owned us for far too long. Let it happen. Let the week 16 game against the Bills determine the division, and let’s win!

Then let that momentum carry over to us winning the #1 seed vs the Ravens the following week.

I have lots of things to point to as doubts, but this team has YET to play it’s best game in all 3 phases.

For the 1st time in decades I can say, NOBODY can beat us if we play our best.

    That’s scary, but hella fun!

Wow. A Jahn sighting. Rare as rocking horse droppings. We are surely a team of destiny with God on our side? Just a quick technicality ref your post – we play @ Ravens on NY eve and finish with Bills at home. I think if we win at Ravens and are 4-0 in remaining games we could even lose vs Bills and keep #1 seed. Lot of football still to be played tho.

Caller to Pat Kirwan was probably that dope from TX who calls himself ‘Grumpy Fins Fan.’ Dude can barely get a coherent sentence out.

      Good to see ya, Jahn!

This morning we wake up going into week 14, not only in control of making the playoffs, but in control of having the 1 seed for the AFC. We have come a long way in two years my friends.

I believe the Bills lose their next two and come into the Miami game at 8-8, out of the playoffs.i would love nothing more than Miami to be able to have clinched the one seed and sit their starters for the game.

  82. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Wow, didn’t think I would wake up to a Jags loss.

Hate that Lawrence went down. Just don’t want Bills to get in.

Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence suffered what was initially diagnosed as an ankle sprain in a 34-31 overtime loss to the Cincinnati Bengals and will undergo an MRI on Tuesday, NFL Network Insider Tom Pelissero reported.

Head coach Doug Pederson did not have update following the game and confirmed Lawrence will have more tests Tuesday.

NFL Network’s Cameron Wolfe reported that Lawrence seemed able to stand on his ankle in the locker room following the loss but was careful not to put pressure or walk on it. He was seen sharing information regarding the injury with his teammates and a number of them seemed in good spirits after speaking to him, per Wolfe, after which Lawrence departed the locker room in a walking boot.

So, just curious, why aren’t we hearing about Joe Burrow being “injury prone” when he has now missed 2x the number of games due to injury as Tua? He also got injured in college, but not his senior year like Tua.

    • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Because “there has been on question for a while” that he is a franchise QB…. or some retarded bullshit like that.

    • ukfinfan's avatar ukfinfan says:

And why, Rhino, is stuff like this not getting the coverage it deserves? Oh, wait a minute, because it would mean positive and Tua would have to co-exist in the same sentence. MSM don’t do that!

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

That is awesome. And you can probably take a play or two every week and see him doing something like this. Dude is dedicated and putting what he learns to use. even his haters should be able to acknowledge that.

  85. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

I just read an article that Zach WIlson does not want to take over as starting QB again? LOL WTF!? I love puke green dumpster fires!

  86. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

I hate seeing articles that say shit like “Dolphins get some help to grab #1 seed”

Well EVERY team needs other teams to beat other teams. That is how shit works!

We didn’t get any help! We already had the #1, but kept it because Jax lost. If Jax won last night, THEN JAX WOULD HAVE “GOTTEN HELP” WITH OUR EARLIER LOSS TO KC or BUFF.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I’m just glad it’s in our hands now. No way we lose either of our next two games (barring something catastrophic). So, the only narrative we have to deal with for the next couple of weeks is ‘we haven’t beaten anybody’, until we finally get ‘somebody’ in OUR home for a change in week 16.

    • herdfan's avatar herdfan says:

Jax got help because Burrow is out and they still lost.

  87. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Fortunately we don’t have to worry about getting shafted by a-hole voters like FSU did cause you know they’d pass us over.
We’ll get in and get our seed by our W-L record . Plus F’n SoV if needed.

And other teams losing is not us getting help when we have the best record and 5 games to go.

Getting help is when you’ve played all your games and you’re not in and can only get in if some other team beats the team ahead of you so you back in after the fact.

Even then that’s giving time of day of scheduling some power it doesn’t actually have.

  88. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Interesting selection for Tua to play on guitar.
He’s a new dad so that song probably resonated with his feelings of the awesome responsibility of being a dad and overwhelming preciousness of the child.

Tua revealing he is a man of feelings and thoughtfulness. He has depth of character and a serious reflective side.

Who could see him do that and not cheer for the kid?

  89. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Somebody dropped a comment on Instagram saying Darius Rucker should get with Tua after season for a jam. Rucker, who as you know is a huge Dolphins fan, posted “I’m in”

Phins are 13 point favorites against the Titans. So that is actually not as big as the two -9.5s on the road before that.
