2023 Season – Game 14 – Jets @ Dolphins

Buckle up Dolphins fans, the NFL season is a thrill ride and this Sunday’s matchup against the Jets can go any number of ways. Before writing this article I’ve listened to 3 different sports shows, one in Miami on WQAM (The Joe Rose Show) and the other 2 in New York on WFAN, catching the last segment on Boomer and Gio discussing the Jets vs Dolphins game as well as Tierney and Licata in their opening segment, also discussing the game Sunday. Joe Rose has a regular appearance by Mike Florio from ProFootballTalk, and of course, they also discussed the game. The difference of opinions is as you would expect, all over the place, and the reasoning, all over the place too. Comments like “Well, the Jets are playing good football now, and the Dolphins are reeling, so . . . “, or “I think the Dolphins will win this one but it’s going to be a very close game, especially if Tyreek Hill doesn’t play”.

The way I see it is every game is its own little part of the season, and I also think momentum is such an overrated and overused word. ”The Jets are playing really good football”. You mean the Jets that lost 13-8 the previous week to the Atlanta Falcons? One game does not give ANY indication of anything other than a one game performance in the NFL. You can’t bet on that same type of performance in a different location, against a different team, and expect similar results. That much I can guarantee you. This is a compelling game, it means a lot to the jets who have a very outside chance of still getting a playoff berth. It means a lot to the Dolphins who sorely want to win the division and find the Buffalo Bills right back in striking distance after the brutal loss to the Titans Monday night. I find it comical that all of a sudden Jets QB is the Messiah and he’s going to get it done. Every game is lightning in a bottle. Sometimes the lightning strikes, sometimes it doesn’t.

Monday Night’s loss to the Titans in my mind was one of the worst losses in recent Dolphins history. Was it worse than the Ravens 59-10 thrashing in 2019? Well, in the context of importance and the fact that we had a 2 TD lead with less than 5 minutes to go, yes, it was worse. I don’t know if Tyreek Hill is going to be able to play, or if he plays, how many snaps he can play, and whether he can be effective. The difference is we can game plan around not having him, and if there’s one thing you have to give Mike McDaniel credit for, he can game plan. WR Jaylen waddle will have to step up and take on a bigger role, and then other receivers like Cedrick Wilson, Braxton Berrios, River Cracraft, maybe even Chase Claypool if they decide to sit Tyreek altogether. I don’t feel like last week’s game defines our season, and the team shouldn’t either. We saw the graphic, teams leading by 14 points with 3 minutes to go on Monday Night Football were 767-0. It was crazy, but if you’ve ever played sports, you know crazy things can happen in any given game. So many things have to happen bad for one team and good for the other for that comeback to happen, and that’s exactly how it went. Chubb, who made a critical mental error earlier in the game and allowed the Titans the opportunity to get a TD rather can kick a FG had his arms around Titans QB Will Levis but just couldn’t bring him down. He does, and the Dolphins probably win. The screen pass to RB Tyjae Spears worked to perfection, DeAndre Hopkins getting wide open for a 36 yard strike, with both Xavien Howard and Jalen Ramsey in the lineup. Tua slipping down after avoiding a sack. Shit happens, and I believe in momentum very much within the scope of one game. Sometimes it’s like a freight train going down hill without brakes.

I do believe the 9-4 Dolphins are legit contenders. Forget Super Bowl talk, I don’t see any team in the AFC standing on the mountain top beating their chest saying we’re the team to beat. The closest team to doing that in my opinion is the Baltimore Ravens, a very well coached, very consistent, perennial contender. Since we play the Ravens, we have a chance to see how we measure up, but before we get there, we must take care of business this Sunday against the Jets. If I’m Mike McDaniel, I have everyone ready to play on offense, and if Tyreek Hill plays, it’s just an extra weapon. It doesn’t look like the Dolphins are going to activate RB Chris Brooks for this game, but he has still has one more week beyond this one to be activated. He would need to be activated for next week’s game against the Dallas Cowboys or he’s done for the season.

A huge hurdle the Dolphins have to clear is injuries right now. OC Connor Williams is OUT for the season, and his replacement, OC Liam Eichenberg has a calf injury. OG Robert Hunt didn’t play last week with a hamstring injury and his availability is up in the air this week. LT Terron Armstead got in a limited practice so I have a feeling he suits up, and Lester Cotton will play LG. If Eichenberg can’t go Sunday, we do have another OC on the roster, Jonotthan Harrison who last played in the NFL in 2019 for the Jets, ironically. OG Robert Jones would play RG and OT Austin Jackson at RT. My guess is Eichenberg somehow suits up, but Hunt is questionable at best. S DeShon Elliott who is suffering with a concussion and ribs injury is probably going to sit out so the dynamic duo of Holland and Elliott isn’t likely. No offense to S Brandon Jones but he’s hitting our own guys more than the other guys. CB Xavien Howard suffered a hip injury in the Titans game but he, along with Holland both got in limited practices.

My biggest points I want all of you to take away this week is not to look at least week as a defining moment for our team. There are many more moments that will happen, along with many others that have happened that ALL define this team, and the season. It’s a story not yet finished, not yet written so hang in there and remember we have a good football team, and a good coach. Speaking of Coach, Mike McDaniel has to have this team ready to play Sunday and be the better coach than Rob Saleh. Our QB Tua Tagovailoa has to play a great game and make some big plays and not slip and fall or miss a bad snap or any of those negative things. He has to be the best QB on field, period.  We need AVG to be the unstoppable force on the edge, a playmaker again. Tennessee double and triple teamed Chubb last week, daring AVG to do it on his own and he was completely held in check, 4 tackles, no QB hits, no sacks, no bueno. I know we will miss Jaelan Phillips, but AVG has to be better for us to be the defense we need to be. I’m very concerned with RB De’Von Achane. Oh, he has all the talent in the world, but with such limited playing time, he has so many injuries. We need all the playmakers we can get, but this kid is not a high volume player. Mostert has been amazing, but I’m worried about him too. We know he’s hurting, he’s on the injury report every week of the season, and if Achane can’t spell him enough to keep him healthy for the playoffs, hopefully they allow either Jeff Wilson or Chris Brooks to spell him more often.

On the face of it, completely ignoring last week’s loss, we’re hobbling into this game. I think we’re the better team, but I’m not sure how much of this team is going to be available, and stay available throughout the entire game. You have to admit, the coaches have done a masterful with the offensive line, one of our favorite pin cushions. Guys have been out all season, but this is getting a little crazy. Losing Connor Williams really hurts us. Liam Eichenberg has been giving us better play at OG, but now we’re asking him to play OC, and he’s compromised with a calf injury. On defense, S DeShon Elliott being out hurts us. Xavien Howard being compromised with a hip injury hurts us. It’s not an ideal situation, but this team has to find a way. Don’t expect a double digit victory against the Jets this weekend, I’ll take a 1 point victory, because we have to win it. Once again, I don’t believe for a second that last week’s loss hurts us this week. We need to prove that by doing enough to win.

Quick Update: S DeShon Elliott and OG Robert Hunt are OUT Sunday

I agree, but lol, not the same ole Dolphins

We beat the Jets this year by 64-13 combined

I guess Zach Wilson was right to worry about injury

That was a heck of a punt

He threw the pass after contact and the ball didn’t make it to the LOS

Seems we were o D a couple of weeks ago ad the excuse for no grounding was the QB was trying to hit his receiver, but wasn’t able to, because of being contacted

These FN guys just make shit up as they go

I am pleased with the win. We crushed our enemies, we saw them driven before us and we heard the lamentations of their women! I am still hearing the lamentations this morning from the Jet’s fan. LOL

  13. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

They hold their own destiny in their hands. If they win they are in and they get the first seed and a first round bye. That is it. Win three games and you guys are going the the Divisional game after getting a weeks extra rest. It is in their hands.

  14. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

    THE OVERALL AFC PICTURE

Just like the Dolphins don’t need any outside help to win the AFC East title if they take care of business, they don’t need any outside help to land the No. 1 seed in the AFC and the accompanying first-round bye and home-field advantage throughout the conference playoffs.

By winning out, the Dolphins would finish 13-4 and the only team that could match that record would be Baltimore, but then Miami would get the tiebreaker by virtue of their head-to-head victory Dec. 31 (remember, this is the scenario where the Dolphins win out).

If the Dolphins finish 12-5 while defeating Baltimore, they’ll win the AFC East title but landing the top seed then would require the Kansas City Chiefs losing one of their final three games — at home against Las Vegas, at home against Cincinnati, and at the L.A. Chargers.

One thing for sure: The Dolphins cannot land the No. 1 seed in the AFC if they lose at Baltimore.

If the Dolphins win the AFC East but don’t land the No. 1 seed, the most likely landing spot would be the second or third seed depending on whether they can finish with a better record than the Chiefs, who hold the tiebreaker over them.

If the Dolphins should end up not winning the AFC East and finish 11-6, they likely would be in a battle with the Cleveland Browns for the No. 5 seed. The Browns currently are a game behind the Dolphins at 9-5 and finish with games at Houston, vs. the New York Jets, and at Cincinnati.

In a worst-case scenario where the Dolphins lose their final three games, they still likely would make the playoffs with a 10-7 record, but that would require some outside help like one Cincinnati loss and one more losses from two of three AFC South contenders (Houston, Indianapolis, Jacksonville).

  15. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

It is insane that the Bills who have struggled to run all year put up over 260 yards rushing on the Cowboys last night!

  16. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Too bad for Tyreek that he missed yesterday’s game. No yards. Now he only has three games to make it to 2000. That is 152.66 yards per game. I think he will probably take the record from Calvin Johnson, but in more games so there will be an asterix

  17. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

We could not run the ball yesterday which is a concern. Only 77 yards rushing at less than 3 yards per carry. That isn’t going to do it against the Boys who Buff just put up 250+ rushing on .

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

Slightly deceiving stat. We ran effectively in goal line and short yardage situations and it made them respect the run/play action

      • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Mostert said he had mixed feelings about breaking the two records yesterday. (most rushing TDs in franchise history (Ricky Williams) and most TD’s in franchise history (Mark Clayton) because he played so poorly in his opinion. It didn’t feel right to break both those records in such a poor performance.

  18. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Zach Martin’s injury last night turns out to be a quad and not his knee. He is saying he thinks he will play in Miami next week. I hope he has a set back. We need every advantage we can get.

  19. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Our D held the jest to less than 2 yards per carry running AND less than 2 yards per pass! I don’t think I’ve ever seen that.

  20. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Claypool caught 2 so maybe he is becoming familiar with the offense. It would be nice to have a large possession receiver down the stretch.

  21. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

If Dallas plays like that, we’ll win.

My most favoritest holiday only happens every few years and always happens on a different day. Sweep the Jets Day is always awesome!

Happy Sweep the Jets Day everyone!

  23. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

It is freaking crazy that with only three weeks left in the season the Dolphins could finish anywhere from the #1 seed with a bye all the way down to possibly missing the playoffs!!! That is just freaking crazy!

  24. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

    Romo is crazy
The 5-7 seeds are atrocious this season
    —————
Not atrocious at all. The Browns (5th seed) and Bengals (6th seed) have had the hardest schedule (SOS) and the best SOV out the top 9 teams in the AFC playoff rankings.

Only exception is the Jags have had the hardest schedule (SOS) in the NFL.

Browns have wins over 49er’s, a road win at Ravens and also beat the Jags.
Bengals have wins over Rams, Seahawks, Bills, Colts, road wins at 49er’s and at Jags.
Colts not as impressive but they beat the Texans and Ravens on the road.

Bills are still 9th seed but have back to back wins over the Chiefs (on the road) and Cowboys.

Who have we beaten????? Oh, the 7-7 Broncos before they got their shit together.

We fit right in with the 5-7 seeds right now. This team has to come up big the next 2 games to prove themselves, injuries or not.

  25. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

    ▪ You’re making my head explode. Tell me what I should root for next weekend.
1). Root for a Dolphins win against Dallas because that clinches a playoff spot for Miami.

2). Root for a Chargers win against the visiting Bills, because that would reduce the Dolphins’ AFC East magic number to one.

3). Root for the Steelers to beat the Bengals (to further reduce Cincinnati as a threat to overtake Miami in the wild card seedings if the Dolphins lose the division).

4). Root for the Texans to beat the Browns, to improve Miami’s chances of being the fifth (top wild card) seed if the Dolphins lose the division.

    5) Root for the Falcons to beat the Colts (same reason as rooting for the Texans).

6). Root for Tampa Bay to beat Jacksonville (see the previous reason).

7). Root for the Raiders to beat the Chiefs (to improve Miami’s chances of finishing with the No. 2 seed if it loses one game but wins the AFC East) and

8). Root for the 49ers to beat the visiting Ravens (to keep alive the Dolphins’ No. 1 seed chances if Miami beats Baltimore but loses another game).

  26. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I actually would prefer the Browns Bengals and Colts with their backup QBs as the wild Card teams instead of the Bills and Texans.
Also if those 3 teams keep winning, it makes it more likely that the Bills are hopeless when they play us.

  27. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Because of the score, the Dolphins wound up playing every player who dressed for the game yesterday.

They wound up playing all backups on the Oline at point during the game yesterday.

  28. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Jaguar’s QB in concussion protocol. Wonder if HE will be able to miraculously clear protocol and play this coming week?

  29. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

I cannot remember the last season we swept both the Pats and the Jets in the same season. Does anyone know?

    • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

we have swept the jets 5 of the last 8 seasons.
we swept the Pats this year and the year before last

SO the answer to my question is the year before last. LOL

  30. boulderfinfan's avatar boulderfinfan says:

there is a good chance Baltimore loses to San Fran this weekend

  31. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Also if those 3 teams keep winning, it makes it more likely that the Bills are hopeless when they play us.
    ————–
Not really. With them having Chargers and Pats next 2 games, they will be playing for the AFCE championship in week 18.

ONLY way they will be hopeless is if we beat both the Cowboys and the Ravens. Not one of them but we have to beat both. If we are 11-5 and they are 10-6 in week 18 and beat us they win the division.

Even then, those 3 teams ahead of the Bills have to play each other so they will be losing a game here or there over the next 3 weeks when the Bills will be 10-6 coming into Miami.

Jags and Bengals both have the head to head over the Bills which helps some if they were to be tied in the playoff standings.

The way I see it, we either have to win our next 2 or just beat the Bills in week 18 to win the division.

    Damn Titans game!

  32. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

This week the Dolphins are in position to make franchise history with two 1000 yard receivers and a 1000 yard rusher for the first time in Dolphins history. Waddle needs something like 36 yards and Mostert needs something like 34 yards this week to break the records. GO DOLPHINS!

I love seeing these guys who pore their lives into the team success get individual accolades as well.

  33. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Mostert on getting in the record books

“It feels amazing,” Mostert said after the game. “It’s something that I didn’t necessarily think I would ever do, especially with a guy like Ricky Williams and the rushing touchdowns. I thought the world of him, because me being from Florida, you watch certain players, and he was definitely a player that caught my eye at an early age.

“To be able to break his record and then Mark Clayton’s record, as well, it speaks a lot, especially with this team. But I kind of feel bad, too, because I had like 14 rushes for like however many yards that kind of made me feel like I was doing a terrible job, and I wasn’t running the ball good enough. Yeah, there’s a lot of highs and lows right now for me, but I’m definitely happy.”

  34. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I hope the 49er’s can do it. Two of their 3 losses are to the AFC North. they lost to the Browns and Bengals.

  35. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Is it too early to call the top picks from our last two drafts busts? Cam Smith and Channing Tindall are certainly looking like busts not being able to get on the field especially when the Dolphins cleared their benches yesterday in the below out win over NY. EVERYONE got to play….except them of course…

  36. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

I have to admit that Fangio really has this D clicking. We played without Jaelen Phillips, Jerome Baker and three of four starting defensive backs yesterday and still had the first shutout of a team since 2020 (also the Jets) He has had them playing very good football outside the final three minutes of last week. 😡🤬

  37. Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

Fins go 3-0 = top seed

Fins win next 2, but lose to Bills, we’d need KC to lose 1 more game (ugh Tenn)

Lose to Dallas, and we’d need SF to beat Balt and THEN might still need KC to lose 1 more.

Basically, a loss to Dallas means KC controls destiny to jump us in seeding. Can’t even worry about Ravens until Dallas game is over.

  38. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Speaking of battles won, Jalen Ramsey – the only starter in the secondary who played Sunday – certainly won his.

Facing Garrett Wilson, the Dolphins cornerback held the Jets star to 29 yards on three catches, the second-lowest mark of the year for Wilson.

Exactly how I felt about it. It didn’t matter, so it didn’t matter, and I’d hope he would be smart enough to bat it down if the team was in a position that it did matter.

I have kinda given up on wanting to see high football IQ though after seeing Wilkins celebrate instead of going after a live ball after he made that same mistake just a few weeks ago.

a soft tissue injury is an injury of the muscles, tendons or ligaments.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I don’t gamble much, but I think what that means is you have to bet $122 to get $100.

If you are taking it to the game day and putting them through a workout, for me, that is close enough that you couldn’t rule it out. As far as how it progresses during the week, we’ll take that a day at a time, but I think, with the guys that were working out before the game, that, in itself, lets you know that it’s close. According to PFF (up to date), David Long is the #1 run-stopping LB with a grade of 93.1. Second best is Bobby Wagner with a grade of 90.8.

  64. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

According to PFF, David Long has a missed tackle percentage of an amazing 1.5%!!!

    DAYUM!!!

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

And much to his credit, Jerome Baker’s missed tackle percentage has come down BIG TIME to 5.6%. He’s been in the double-digit domain for most of his career.

  65. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

When it comes to Defense, most NFL stats refer strictly to yards against. That stated…

I’m here to tell y’all that we are the #5 Defense in the NFL right now!!!
And we trail the Chefs* by a mere 4 yards to be the #4 Defense in the NFL right now!!!

So there ya go… we FINALLY have a top-5 Defense!!!

  66. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

ACCORDING TO THE METRIC OF YARDS…

Top-5 Offenses in the NFL right now

    1- Phins
    2- 9’ers
    3- Lions
    4- Bills
    5- Ravens

Top-5 Defenses in the NFL right now

    1- Brownies
    2- Ravens
    3- Panthers(?!!)
    4- Chefs*
    5- Phins

One needn’t be a math wizard to understand the following (barring the Eagles blowing out and shutting out the Seahawks this evening)…

Lower number is better via these combined rankings
      Phins- 6
      Ravens- 7

Nobody else is really even close in the NFL.

With snap numbers equivalent to 5 games worth, Tua’s numbers are actually better in most categories with Hill off the field.

This isn’t to say we’re better without Hill. It’s showing we aren’t just Hill and Tua isn’t having success solely because of Hill

    • pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

Funny, I was just thinking about this exact thing. The team is actually more efficient with Hill off the field because Tua isn’t forcing the ball as much. Not as flashy, but fewer negative plays, ball goes to more players. Somebody here said something about the #2 WR stepping up when the #1 was out, referring to Waddle – Waddle is a #1 WR on most any other team.

  75. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

You are right about that strip / sack / fumble / TD play. I was pissed that Wilkins was oblivious to the play continuing while he celebrated for the SECOND TIME

I can’t believe refs have been allowing Jason Kelce to move the ball forward for so long. So the Tush Push was basically, “let’s cheat about a half yard off the total before the snap” and then push! Refs have ruined this game.

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Kelce said “they have been warning me for years” about that.

Guess he keeps doing it because he gets away with it most of the time.

    • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

what!? when did this come out?

      • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

More of the convo with reporters

“I think when you’re trying to get a forward lean and you really do that, I think I had a tendency to do that in the past, so they’ve definitely warned me before. I think that I just got to be smarter. Especially in that situation.”

“I think if that’s a full yard to gain, probably not as much, but I think because it was so short, the fact that I moved it forward at all was gonna get called,” he said. “Just gotta be smarter than that.”

    • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

      Never mind. I googled it.

    from him LAST season

Elandon Roberts is playing well this season and STATISTICALLY having a better season than Long.

    ER
    95 comb 33 ast 2.5 sks
    DL
    92 comb 43 ast 1 sks

    ER PFF Grade
    69.6
    DL PFF Grade
    68.4

They both are doing well. Roberts played well for us last season too, just not great. He is playing well for Pitt this year.

Not taking anything away from Long, just pointing out how things stand week 15 this season…
    ———–
Acknowledged, my friend. I really wanted to re-sign Elandon Roberts (many of us did). Fortunately for us, David Long is having one helluva year!

    • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

yup, I am not upset that we made the change. More surprised that Roberts is doing so well after the change of scenery.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

If the NFL wants to expand into South America the Phins are the logical choice. MIA is the hub of flights to South America and half of South America is already in Miami anyhow.

      • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

The Phins were awarded “home country rights” to Brazil back in 2021 so it SHOULD be the Dolphins home game, but we only get 8 this season so to take one away would be unfair. But making us the away team when we own the rights isn’t fair either. WHY!? Why do they have to force these things!? It doesn’t have to be opening week!

Besides, the home opener always goes to the SB victor. What are they going to do about that!?

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Given what you have put out — they wouldn’t have to make us the home team for a game in Sao Paolo. “Home Country rights” don’t necessarily mean on designated home team on game day.

    • pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

Miami can turn it down because they went to Germany this year. Besides, Super Bowl champs are always the Thursday night opener at home.
