2023 Season – Game 15 – Cowboys @ Dolphins

Last week’s Dolphins performance makes me feel very confident going into this week’s Christmas Eve matchup at home at Hard Rock against the Dallas Cowboys. Coach McDaniel knows he and his team made a critical mistake allowing the Titans to steal that MNF game 2 weeks ago and now his team focused on the prize. There’s a sense that they should not only win out so the team is able to secure the #1 seed, but because they have the talent and ability to do so. The Cowboys are a good football team, they have talent on both sides of the ball and should present a difficult challenge. I do believe our team is ready for that challenge.

The Cowboys are a much better team playing at home than they are outside of AT&T Stadium in Arlington. At home in Texas, the Cowboys have score 37.7 points per game while allowing only 15 points per game to their opponents. Away from Texas, the Cowboys are scoring 19.8 points per game while allowing 24.3 points per game, and this includes the season opener in which the Cowboys shellacked the NY Giants 40-0. The Dolphins defense needs to continue it’s ferocity, particularly the pass rush which has been nothing short of fierce. Only one team has more sacks the Dolphins defense, that’s the Baltimore Ravens with 50 compared to our 48. I believe that by the time we face the Ravens, we’ll have more sacks than them.

The Dolphins also have a decent disparity between their home performances and their away performances, but not nearly as drastic as the Dallas Cowboys huge chasm of home and away scoring. The Dolphins are scoring a healthy 35.8 points per game at Hard Rock and 27.1 points per game away. That’s almost a 9 point differential which pales compared to the Cowboys 18 point differential. At home, the Dolphins have allowed 16.4 points per game, but have allowed 25.5 points per game away. Here, the difference in points scored and allowed for both teams is much closer, just about 8 points per game better at home for both teams. The Dolphins defense has also been significantly better in the last few weeks. On the whole, we’re scoring 31.5 points per game and allowing 21. In our last 7 games the defense has really clamped down, allowing only 15.2 points per game, and that includes 3 away games.

I have to say, I’m thrilled we’re on Hard Knocks. I’m enjoying that like no else’s business! Not only do I get to see every Dolphins game, but now I get to see the players and coaches behind the scenes as well! I’m enjoying it ALL as I still firmly believe we’re witnessing a special season. I think this team is capable of representing the AFC in the Super Bowl. First order of business is to take care of the Cowboys in our house on Christmas Eve Day. The injury situation is still rough, I’m guessing that Tyreek Hill, Terron Armstead, Xavien Howard, Jevon Holland, Liam Eichenberg, and Andrew Van Ginkel will all suit up and play, and we’ll also see the return of RB Chris Brooks. Unfortunately on the negative side, it looks like RT Austin Jackson and RG Robert Hunt will miss another game, leaving OT Kendall Lamm to handle RT and either G Robert Jones or Lester Cotton to handle RG.

One very honorable mention, this needs to be said, make it two honorable mentions. actually. LB Duke Riley has played so well in the place of injured LB Jerome Baker. I know this will kill Hulk, but Liam Eichenberg toughing it out last week and suiting up and playing some good football deserves a big mention as well. I don’t know what kind of magic Offensive Line Coach Butch Barry is mixing up but my goodness, that guy deserves major props! I’m looking forward to spending time with family and watching the Dolphins game against the Cowboys Christmas Eve, what could be better? Tyreek Hill will be back, but what a nice game for Jaylen Waddle who really stepped up last game with Tyreek out. We need to see more of him, and not be so Tyreek Hill centric. Could we even see big Chris Brooks getting some carries to put the Cowboys away late in the game and give Raheem Mostert a breather? Stay tuned Dolphins fans!

Thanks Mike E. I’m liking Hard Knocks too. I still think it’s a distraction but I’d be lying if I said I haven’t enjoyed watching.

Christmas Eve is going to be interesting here. My mom has adopted the Cowboys as her team, somewhat annoying because my niece’s ex is a Cowboys fan and that’s why she has adopted them. Doesn’t matter that her DAUGHTER is a Dolphins fan. WTF?

    Merry Christmas to everyone!

yeah I know what you mean.
talk about interesting family football dynamics …
We’ll be in Rhode Island closer to Foxboro stadium
than we are to Hard Rock when we’re home.

All of my son’s wife’s family are strong Patriots fans.
There’s like 20-25 of them gathered on Cape Cod for Christmas Eve
and in South Boston Christmas Day.
I’ll be lucky to be allowed even a glimpse of our game with Dallas.

We’ve been up there for a couple regular season
    Dolphins victories over the pats.

The inlaws always acted like they were shocking upsets.

It’ll be interesting to see how they handle being the worst team in the AFC now.

Thank you, Mike E…..and I agree about the Dallas game. It’s December football!

I like your opinions on the Cowboys game Mike E.

I especially like your mention of Chris Brooks.
I think he’s a secret weapon for us at this time.
I notice he is not even on the injured list this week!
He could be fresh legs against some beat-up
DL and LB for the other teams.
I think Dallas has a DE and a DT on the injury list.
Their run D is their worst aspect and our run O is top 3.
Hoping we can do to them what James Cook did with his outside speed to the corners where they have slow edge-setters and poor-tackling DBs.

Dallas also has 2 OT and an OG on the injury list.
If we can knock Dak around early, we can do to them what Buff did.
    (as far as sacks go)

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Yes Naples, run at them with Mostert and Achane, and then Brooks to finish them off and control the clock. I think we need to be able to be a physical team to match up well with the Cowboys, Ravens and Bills. Mostert has been running physical all season, but having Brooks to put in there should keep Raheem fresh.

Good work Mike, I just hope they come out fired up from the 1st quarter. They really didn’t play that well the first half against the Titans

Hunt has been ruled out. Jackson returned to limited practice today.

      • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I hate hamstring injuries. They linger. What do they even do for those? It seems like sometimes guys never really recover from a torn hamstring. It seems Hunt’s is a bad one, but is it a tear or just a pull? I hope we can at least get Hunt back to his former self next year.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Naples – They’re always tears, it just depends on how bad. I’ve torn them so many times, ended up with the blood pooling behind my knee. If you tear it, that’s what happens. I would classify it as a pull if you feel it and immediately stop moving, that could be a “pull” like you say. I’ve done that and been OK a week or two later.

      • Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

Imo, it’s always best with hamstring injuries is too err on the conservative side, i.e. recover as long as possible, no need to rush.

      • Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

        ^to err…

  8. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

I hope we shut down their first drive and come out and score on our first drive so that they are playing from behind all game. TOO often this year we have not scored on our first possession. I would LOVE to score on offense AND defense in the first quarter to really have the reeling.

  9. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Good article Mike E! You da man! Thank you again for keeping this place going.

  10. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Nice write, Mike! I’m so enjoying this season. The Cowboys have been leaky against the run lately so I expect us to challenge them on the ground early and often.

We’re one sack shy of the most we’ve ever had in a season at 49 in 83 and 05. I expect us to break that and finally get into the 50s.🙂

  11. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Krishna – The problem with hamstring injuries is you can feel good, move well, and then all of a sudden, there it goes! There were times playing softball on concrete in Brooklyn that I would tear them in back to back weeks, but then not have any issues after that. I remember someone telling me that running backwards on the sand helps you to eliminate hamstring injuries. I have no evidence that this actually works though. lol

    • Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

Thank you for validating my point…lol. I don’t know about the running backward in sand, but it makes sense. So does high goose steps…lol

At this point, the Dolphins have scored 26 TDs via passing,
and the very same 26 TDs via rushing.
They’ve also scored 4 defensive TDs.

We’re beating our opponents 56-35 in TDs.
We’re also winning in FGs 17-16.

  17. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

So far, we have almost 2000 rush yards and almost 4000 pass yards.
We’re about 2 yards more per rush and
about 2 yards more per pass than our opponents.

  18. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

We’ve converted almost half of our 4th down tries. … 9/20
And we’re plus 2 in TO ratio.
We have 13 INTs, which I don’t seem to remember being that many.
We have almost twice as many sacks as our opponents.

Tua has completed passes to 14 guys.

Dear Santa, I know I have not been a good boy this year. When have I ever? You know it’s just not in my nature to be nice. That being said, I think it would bring a lot of joy to the Dolphins fans if you could please bring us a DECISIVE WIN against the Dallas Cowboys. Something like a 20 point margin would be great. Thanks!

  23. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

  24. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

This might be a 27-20 type game. We need the defense to play a big game. I expect us to do everything we can to establish the run game. Spread the field laterally in the pass game and then take some shots vertically when the defense adjusts to the stretch stuff.

  25. Ken's avatar Ken says:

Mike McDaniel told reporters that he expects RB De’Von Achane (toe) to play against the Cowboys. He also reiterated that WR Tyreek Hill (ankle) had no setbacks, and he feels good about Hill playing this Sunday per Ian Rappaport

    Who do you play?

  29. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Spread the field laterally in the pass game
    ——————-
That is my #1 fear in this game. Tua has to be careful on those out routes and not try to force it. Especially with DaRon Bland in coverage. He has 8 INT’s with 5 going for pick 6. He can’t get careless and just needs to throw it away.

That said, if he bites, he can be burned.

  30. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Five pick sixes in a year is fucking insane!!

  31. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

    Tim

I’m actually Achane gets some serious bulk yardage and Mostert gets a little break

I would really love it if Achane can get to 1000

And then we have have a four headed monster

    Hill 1k+ receiving yards
    Waddle 1k receiving yards
    Mostert 1k rushing
    Achane 1k rushing

So I’m not forgetting Mostert, I’m just saying he’s ripe for a little
    Rest…lol

  32. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I’ve been pretty obsessed wi the the idea of 4 players for 1000 since M13 mentioned it

It would be the icing on the cake and kind of underlines how special this team is

It’s an icnredible stat to even get close to
But you wouldn’t know it the way the media talks about this team

We also have a shot at being #1 in the league in rushing and passing if we have a couple of strong running games – we have a healthy lead in the passing game and we aren’t far off from Baltimore in rushing

And our defense might be near the top when we finish the season too

Obviously none of this stuff matters as much as winning in the postseason

But I’m amazed that more people are in awe of how good we are this year
I do t remember other teams doing that – maybe I’m wrong

But does anyone remember a team being 1 in rushing and passing in the last 20 years?

3 guys for 1000 yards is pretty rare
I think the marshal Faulk rams did it. Maybe the cowboys and 49ers of the 90s

I just want to rub stats like these into the faces of people that doubted us….lol

Thank you, my man: I truly appreciate that! Pretty sure I was the first — globally — to see the trend as a possibility back on Dec 3rd. Sucks that Achane has missed time since then, but a couple of big games down the stretch could make it happen. We shall see…

  53. Randy's avatar Randy says:

I think this game will come down to protection. We may need to do some creative things to give our passing game time to work. I’d like to believe we will be able to run the ball against Dallas, but after the spanking they took last week and our OL being mostly backups I’m not real confident. They’re gonna be balling out against the run, I’d guess. Play action might be very effective in this game, if we can establish the run a little. I’m looking forward to a good game. Can’t go belly up in another big game.

  54. Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

Agreed Randy. One of the things that has doomed us has been getting down BIG, early in the game. It happened in all three of our losses. If we can prevent that from happening, it will go a long way towards winning this game.

    ———-
Bryan, I had him on my TE list. Thought he was going to declare. Oh well. Probably smart move. He was looking at a mid to late day 3 pick.

He is a big dude with great hands. Almost like having another OL in there. My only question about him is if he has the quickness to fit our offense with all the motion. That’s why Long and Shaheen (besides his injuries) didn’t fit. They couldn’t get to their block on time and this offense is all about timing. I like him though. Kind of reminds me of Luke Shoonmaker who got drafted this year.

BTW, we will see Schoonmaker tomorrow as he got drafted by the Cowboys.

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Actually, Schoonmaker may not see much playing time since Hendershot is back from an ankle injury.

Their main TE’s will probably be Ferguson and Hendershot.

      • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

Ferguson has looked good this season. PSU played Warren at H Back a bunch, And is definitely their best blocking TE, so his has some versatility. He was originally offered from West Virginia as a QB, so he can’t be too slow! I think he would do just fine in MM’s offense.

Yeah, when I looked him up about a month ago, he was projected to run a 4.64ish (low 4.6/high 4.7). That’s good for his size. What will matter is his short are quickness. Not sure what his true measures are but that site had him at 6’6 259 pounds (just looked at PSU site, they have him at 6’6 257).

Anyway, we will have to wait another year. Not to many TE’s I care for in this draft in 5th round or later. Then again, there could be another Jullian Hill, Campbell University out there we don’t know about.

    —————
I think Tyler would be very good in our Offense, Brian. He’s run a 4.54 in the 40, so he’s got the speed we’d like at the TE position, coupled with great blocking ability.

Okay, I’m seeing that Tyler Warren weighed in at 249 pounds as a freshman @ PSU. That’s probably when he ran his 4.54. He’s only added about 10 pounds since, so he can’t be too much slower.

Jake Browning is putting some good stuff on his resume for future opportunities. As I write this he throws a bad pick.😂

Jake Browning IS looking to be a great success story. I’d rather the Stealers* win this one over the Bengals, to be honest.

FWIW, I didn’t play Tyler Boyd

  73. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Only question I would have: can he adequately run and pass block?
    —————
Yes adequate in run blocking. Lined up a lot at HB, some inline and outside.

  75. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Bengals lose and the Bills win tonight, the Bills leapfrog from 9th outside spot to the 6th seed WC team.

Both the Colts have to beat the Falcons in Atlanta and the Texans have to beat the Browns at home to move the Bills back out of the WC.

SMH at the Steelers for 4 weeks in a row

  77. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

If we win out, we get a bye. No need to worry about who is WC.

  78. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I can’t figure out for the life of me why anyone on here would want Pitt to win this game

Anyone have Pickens on their fantasy team?

Mason Rudolph is making me PROUD today! He was my #2 QB in the ’18 Draft, after Baker Mayfield.

OH! I now see where you’re coming from, Steve. I get you.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I’m none too good when it comes down to who, what, where, when, why, or how when it comes down to playoff calculations, seriously. And it seems to change every year regarding the calculations (ie: SOS vs SVS vs Conference W/Ls vs head-to-head, etc).

  82. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

If we can’t beat Buffalo then we’re not who we want to be. No fear, control your own destiny and we do.

  83. Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

    BBM,

Yep, I have Pickens, and I benched him today for Boyd because EVERYTHING pointed towards that being the right move. If I get bounced out of the playoffs for that move, I’m quitting FF and never playing again.

  84. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Has everyone gone to bed already? The Chargers are about to upset the Bills!!!

    Woohooo. Go Chargers!

  86. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

We need to take care of our own business. We do that there’s nothing the Bills can do to win the division or get the #1 seed

  87. Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

The funny thing is we could lose the next two and when Buffalo beats NE next week, the division still comes down to that last game

  88. Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

    Mike E,

I will forever hate Pickens after today

  89. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Couldn’t watch the game. Busy at work. I see the final score though. That sucks.

  90. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Honestly I was just hoping that Bills fans would be disappointed this week instead of having to wait u til the final game of the season

As Christmas approaches, the NFL playoff races are as wild and confusing as ever, making the homestretch of the season one we’ll likely remember. Well, we are about to see what this team is made of.

  93. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Too many years this team has had to rely on other teams losing instead taking care of their business. Guess that is why I have been so stressed since the Titans loss. We’ve been let down a lot over the years. This is where we will see if this team has truly turned the corner.

  94. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I expect us to show up in this game and take care of what we need to do. Onward and upward we go! We won’t need any favors from other teams, we’ll handle our own affairs! Nothing could be more exciting to watch that happen
