Dolphins fall to Bills as frustration and injuries mount

So Dolphins fans, here we are again. I think I was so focused on the Dolphins playing a playoff game at home, but as we witnessed last night, that really doesn’t matter much anyway. Half the damn stadium was filled with Buffalo Bills fans, so any true home field advantage we should have had was diminished. Besides, we can lose on the road just as well as we lose at home. The Dolphins have not signed QB Tua Tagovailoa to a contract as of yet, and in my mind, he has one more shot to prove he’s worth a huge contract. Plenty of QB’s have come through the NFL that put up gaudy stats but play small in big games, and as of this moment, that’s what Tua Tagovailoa is. We play a good team, and all of a sudden, he’s just not the same QB. Against the Bills in October, Tua was 25-35, 282 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT. Against the Philadelphia Eagles, Tua went 23-32, 216 yards 1 TD, 1 INT. Against the Kansas City Chiefs, Tua went 21-34 193 yards and 1 TD. Against the Cowboys, Tua threw 24-37 for 293 yards and 1 TD. Against the Baltimore Ravens, Tua was 22-38 for 237 yards, 2 TD, 2 INT. In the finale against the Bills, Tua went 17-27 for 173 yards, 1 TD, 2 INT’s. So in 6 games against winning teams, Tua managed 7 TD’s and 6 INT’s. I’m sorry folks, that’s not good enough. Much better than a 2:1 TD:INT ratio against the weak teams, and 7:6 against good teams.

Another huge disappointment in my eyes has been the play of Tyreek Hill. Last night, he was not great, and last week against the Ravens, his TD drop was crucial and changed the complexion of the game. In last night’s game, he dropped a pass that could have been a huge gain, but there was a penalty aginst the defender covering Tyreek. He had a clean opportunity, and he dropped it. Maybe he’ll be fired up for the Chiefs next week, we can only hope, but he hasn’t been the guy that took over games earlier in the season. The problem isn’t the defense, who did enough to win, it was the offense and of course the ST’s, allowing the punt return for a TD. Back to Tua though, like I said, he has one more shot to prove he can win a big game, and if he fails, why offer him a tremendous contract? pay him what he’s worth, nowhere near the top QB salaries, because frankly, he doesn’t win big games, he doesn’t carry the team, and against good teams, he doesn’t make a big play to close out a game.

I don’t have much else to say other than if I’m a LB and the Dolphins call me, I think twice about saying YES. WTF is happening with every-single OLB-we-have? It’s insane! Jaelan Phillips, Bradley Chubb, Andrew Van Ginkel and then Cameron Goode. You can’t make this stuff up! Not sure if the Dolphins promote OLB Quinton Bell and secure at least 2 more LB’s, because you can’t expect 34 year old Melvin Ingram and 30 year old Emmanuel Ogbah to play the amount of snaps that Chubb and AVG were playing. You can’t expect them to not get injured either! Honestly, this is all just so frustrating because we’ve been here before so many times. Never ready for prime time, coming up small in make or break games. Still have one more chance, but my confidence level is at an all time low.

Who else will be happy next year when Belichick becomes the coach with the most losses all time?! Especially when he won’t have passed the GOAT, Don Shula before that ‘accomplishment’ becomes fact.

  5. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

I know a number of people have pointed to Ogbah and Baker as cap casualties, and maybe X too.

We really need some draft infusion to get some talent for cheap in some spots.

The problem is Kong, that we gave away that draft capital for expensive players in trade and for tampering with other expensive players.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Yep, that has definitely hindered us the last couple years and will continue to hurt this year.

We’re missing our 3rd and 4th rd picks this year. It makes it even more important to hit on our 1st and 2nd rd picks.

  6. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

If we keep singing pass rushers who like that – we might have to play with leather helmets

I feel like next year is a big year for us. I expect big things from this team next year

I am wondering how that is going to happen when we don’t have the cap room to field 45 let alone 53?

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

The cap number will be higher next year and I expect a significant increase in the number when we extend and restructure Tua’s contract

There’s the ILB I thought they may add, Malik Reed. He was with us the whole preseason (98 snaps worth) and was a final cut.

  12. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Wish we didn’t have to pay Byron Jones 10M next season (he already got it in bonus / salary, it’s just still on the books as dead cap for next year!)

We are currently 43M over the projected cap next year. which includes 2+ mil in rollover that we MAY still spend on these guys we are bringing in for the playoffs. So we MAY be 45M over when the year starts. That is for ONLY the 37 THIRTY-SEVEN!! players that are under contract for next year.

Tell me how we are going to be OK Ken?

37 players under contract. 16 new players needed to make up 53.
5 or 6 of the guys included in the cap will not be able to play at all or most of next season because of injury.

    Tell me….Tell me…

The answer is you cannot tell me. Either can Grief. He went all in for slightly better than mediocre.

Kevin Harlan is calling the chiefs game

He’s the “he’s got Hill” guy and one of the best out there IMO

So we won’t have to listed to a lot of Miami bashing from the game commentators in the game – which is good news

  15. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Quarterback Josh Allen continued to torch the Dolphins inside linebackers. He completed all 12 of his targets for 101 yards against Duke Riley, Long and Jerome Baker.

Entering that game, the Bills had a 149.6 passer rating (34 for 40, 390 yards, 5 TDs, no interceptions) when targeting Miami’s inside linebackers since the start of the 2022 season.

Lot of biotching about the Phins after the last two games, but the Chiefs are only 3.5 point favorites at home. They finished out 3-3 over the last 6 games.

  21. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

So we’re not the best team and we only lose to good teams, except for one. Okay that makes us frauds or whatever? Anyone who doesn’t think injuries are valid excuses then don’t worry about FA and the draft, because it doesn’t matter. Anyone can play. 😉

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Mentioned that in my post earlier about being hard on Tua. That is where all this frustration is coming from.

Even though I think Tua is limited, I believed and still believe we could win it all with him. Thought so much this year was IT. With Tua we just can’t have all the injuries we have had. It’s just stupid ridiculous.

      No other team comes close.

    • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

Tim, we aren’t frauds, but we have a problem winning games against tough teams over the past two years, that’s a fact. We haven’t been ravaged by injuries is every one of those games. We didn’t lose to the Bills this past week because we had tons of injuries, which we did indeed have. We lost because the offense couldn’t execute against a Bills defense who had their fair share of injuries as well. If you can’t see that, well, I don’t know what else to say.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

We lost a close football game. There is nothing else to say.

      • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

Yeah. We barely rushed the ball in the second half, had a grand total of one first down before the final drive that needed with an interception. Those were the main reasons we LOST a close game instead winning it. Hopefully a different outcome this week.

  22. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Ken – How bout this . . . I don’t want to discuss whether Tua is a franchise QB or not worthy of a $50M per year mega contract. I hope he puts an exclamation on this season by first beating the Chiefs, and then whoever else we play. Then we can pay him a kings ransom. If not, well . . . .

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

McDaniel and Tua have earned to keep building towards the goal. We haven’t made the playoffs two years in row in over two decades. Now we did and that’s not good enough. Enjoy a more positive ride. We all know what it feels like to be stuck in the middle for a very long time. 😉

Have any of you read Sanderson’s mistborn series? Was it any good? I just finished the Stormlight saga book 4 and the ending left me wanting. It sucked. Now I am without anything to read.

    Any suggestions?

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

No but I remember the adventures of Funky Winkerbean.🤣

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I find Sanderson to be an ok writer, and I find all his Cosmere books to be readable but just ok. I didn’t even finish the stormlight saga.

I thought the mistborn series was one of the better series in the Cosmere along with mistborn series 2 (wax and wayne cycle). Elantris is a stand alone that was pretty good.

If you mostly liked stormlight, then google sanderson’s cosmere and just start getting books off the list- starting with mistborn. Basically, every book he writes are all interconnected (different worlds in the ‘cosmere’). The magic systems are different in each world, and the stories kind of intertwine and some characters cross books. There were a couple of characters in stormlight that are in other books.

The best thing about the cosmere is the different magic systems in each world- for example, in mistborn, certain people are adepts and can ingest metal (they make vials of metal flakes in a serum), they can then ‘burn’ the metals in their body and each metal yields a different power.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

There are like 20 books in the cosmere and a couple of books with short stories, so it’ll give you some reading material, but like I said, they aren’t great, just ok IMO.

      • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Thanks! That’s how I found the storm light saga. Just OK. I think the last chapter was a tie into a Cosmere connection because I didn’t understand it.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I’ll have to check out the last book in stormlight. I think that one wasn’t out when I read through the cosmere books.

Making the playoffs would be enjoyable if they didn’t back in to them 2 years in a row. That’s where the disappointment lies. Fade away………

  26. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

    I’m still disgusted…lol.

And, I agree with most of the MM and Tua critique. Playcalling and terrible INTs, playing small in big games seem on point to me

  27. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

The reason we barely rushed the ball in the 2nd half was we couldn’t convert any 3rd downs. We only ran like 15 plays or something, and had one 1st down until the last drive. The Bills brought a safety down, took away the run in the 2nd half and we just weren’t able to convert passing the ball. When a team forces you to march down the field playing small ball, you have to be consistently good on 3rd down.

The mistakes our stars made in the 2nd half on numerous drives have already been outlined, so I won’t outline them again, but Tua and Hill were instrumental in killing 3 or 4 of our drives.

And you can go back to the first Bills game, the Eagles game, and the Chiefs game, and you’ll find it was the same thing- the offense had a couple of nice drives, but when the opponent was taking away the big plays and we were forced to drive the field, we just couldn’t do it consistently enough.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Maybe a playmaking TE will help us be better in that regard.

Maybe Tua takes a good look at his play this offseason and improves this aspect of his game (taking what is there and keeping drives alive instead of trying to force a big play).

Tua has improved an aspect of his game each offseason, maybe this is something he can improve on.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I also think this is where Tua’s lack of athleticism and inability to run when he breaks the pocket makes it that much harder for us and forces Tua to be nearly perfect.

When you are forced to play small ball, but the QB isn’t really a threat to run, it’s just one less weapon in picking up those key 3rd downs in long drives.

This kind of goes back to what Randy was saying in regards to how the game is played, and why athleticism is looked at as such a key element for these QBs to have. Maybe it isn’t a must have, but it certainly helps.

  28. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

A big contract is going to happen because it is an economic necessity. They need to restructure his contract to make cap room and it will be done in the context of an extension of his contract

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

      Yep

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

It’s not a necessity if they decide to let him go via free agency after 2024

If they sign him to a big contract this offseason, they can use it as an opportunity to open up cap room in 2024
      if he is willing

But he has to be willing for starters

And it’s not the only option

There are other players that can be the vehicle for that without committing to Tua through 2030

Saying you have to commit to Tua for 5 years after 2024 to open up cap room this offseason is a hard sell for me

One way or another to re-sign him will take a chunk of your cap room,
Either in 2024 or later and our Front office has a major decision on their hands in deciding whether his play warrants that

      • Ken's avatar Ken says:

It is going to happen. You don’t let 25 year old QBs who led the league in passing go unsigned

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

They’ve already let him go unsigned longer than Any of the QBs who were drafted the same year as him

      • Ken's avatar Ken says:

That was coming off an injury. That is no longer the case. He also did not lead the league in passing. No team lets him go unsigned under these circumstances

  30. boulderfinfan's avatar boulderfinfan says:

Nice work Mike, you read my mind. I also blame MM. he’s being out coached in these big games. Coaching has also let us down in the big games. Just win baby!

I’m sure LT is also available. Look for him in a motel with a lot of lube lol

  32. boulderfinfan's avatar boulderfinfan says:

2 years in a row we haven’t be able to handle the injuries. We have star players that cost a lot of money and when they get injured their backups aren’t doing their job specially against good teams. I also think getting mostert and Waddle
Is gonna make a huge impact on the offense. My worry is the defense at cb and pass rush

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I’m less concerned about the defense than I am the offense right now
Mainly bc the offense has been slumping for weeks

A side of me is holding out hope that MM has been playing his regular season like a poker game and playing his cards close to the chest – ie we’ve been playing with a limited playbook so that we give our postseason opponents less to look at

But it might be a Huge difference maker if we have waddle, Mostert, Hill and Achane available

We really haven’t had that 4 piece combo for many games this season

      I’m guessing 1 or 2 games

  42. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

    Hey UK,

I have a question about soccer (brought on by Ted Lasso). In the show, Jaime was on loan to Richmond from Man City, and Man City later took him back.

I assume this is a real thing, that the top teams will develop some of their players by loaning them to other teams so they get playing time.

If so, can they really just take those players back at any time, or how does that work?

It seems to me, if you’ve got a player on loan to another team, then you and that other team happen to be neck and neck to win the league, you could take your player back at the most inopportune time to help you win. Are there stipulations written into the loan that they can’t do that or something along those lines?

I was thinking maybe there was a clause if the player isn’t getting playing time the team could take him back, but not just whenever they want to.

    • ukfinfan's avatar ukfinfan says:

That situation is a little ambiguous Kong. Usually, loans work on the basis of younger players going down the pyramid to get playing time and experience.

For Cup games, if you play for one team, you cannot later represent another. I don’t think there is such a stipulation in League football.

Wages can be paid by loaner, loanee or split. Playing time can be included in contracts but if the player on loan is bad, he won’t get time. Players can be recalled by the parent club based on need at any time.

My home-town club is non-league now, but we had Robert Sanchez on loan from Brighton at one time. He is now at Chelsea’s and Spain’s #1 for the national team. We also have a kid on loan from Derby which we have just terminated as we now have enough coverage in defence. Ironic as he scored his first goal for us the time before last.

Higher up the food chain, Man Utd have Jaden Sancho. They signed him from Dortmund for £72M and he’s going back there on loan. They are paying £100k of his £300k/w wages. He fell out with the Utd manager so his days are probably numbered.

I can’t really think of a case where a “good” player would go on loan to a rival to make a contribution as most teams at the top have huge squads and rotate them (especially in Cup matches) to keep players “interested”. Even then, the nature of player power is if a good player doesn’t get enough playing time, he’ll ask to leave rather than hang around forever. Young players are usually glad to get extra playing time rather than warming the bench and lower or non-league clubs often only stay alive because of this.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I appreciate the thorough response, UK. I now understand that it is way more complicated than I thought, lol.

  43. ukfinfan's avatar ukfinfan says:

I’ve followed all the post-game stuff with interest – I usually try not to rant too much as it’s often a knee jerk reaction which mellows out over time.

For example, there was no way I was watching on Saturday after FT vs Bills, but I’ve already climbed back from that stance.

With age comes a “little” wisdom (don’t mention ladders), so on NY eve, I baled on the Ravens beat down and went back to the buffet we’d prepared and the 20 y.o. bottle of wine I’d opened rather than watch the death throes of our beat down. On Monday morning, I baled at 4 am knowing the Bills had more than enough to secure #2 seed (even though I lay awake replaying and rationalising it for at least an hour).

I think KC will beat us on Sunday morning, but I still don’t want to wake up (for the second time) later that morning to find out we’d won, so I’ll gut it out with you guys.

I’ve thought long and hard about where we are and where we are going. With regards to the AFC we are not the best team in the AFC as things stand, as proven in Baltimore. We are not even the best team in the AFC as proven in Miami. But sometimes, the best team beats a good team and this is what the Bills did.

This is an interesting Tweet from Marcel.

Sometimes, the other team does the right things at the right time and just flat out beats you.

Ironically, we have the NFL passing leader, in a passing league, and we beat good teams less than 50% of the time, when we need to do that consistently. We also had the NFL rushing TD leader too. And a bunch of injuries. We also have a 2nd year HC and a QB who has now mastered the offense. At season’s end, I hope our HC does a 360 evaluation of everything, including what worked and what didn’t, then go back to the drawing board. We have a QB with a lightning release who throws to windows in ~2 secs, but no plan b for when the WR isn’t there or Tua gets pushed off his spot. We have a line which often necessitated this quick release. That isn’t smart against top Ds imho. We have no TDs by TEs in a league where TE is trending to become more important as a receiving threat, especially in the RZ. We throw FADES to the fastest and possibly the shortest WR in the league. I know he leaps like a salmon and our TEs block but ……….

Our short yardage game is sh1te. OK the tush push will prolly be outlawed, but why did MM not, as an innovator, add this to our O as a threat. Or even a decoy.

I love many of the concepts MM has brought to S. Fla., but equally, in a team game, a lot of our failure lies at his door, not just Tua and Hill. As has been said multiple times on here, we don’t spread the ball around enough. Our offense isn’t necessarily being put in position to succeed often enough and that has to improve starting Saturday.

Fwiw, on the Tua debate, I wouldn’t extend him now – give him a better line (the Bills line all had >1,000 snaps in 23) and a more balanced attack in terms of run pass and spreading the ball around and let him prove he merits a new contract. If we have to let some players go to accommodate this strategy, so be it. It’s better than the flip-side imho – paying Tua and watching a glass ceiling (even a high glass ceiling) for the next x years.

Let’s see how he does Saturday night – though with Hill, Waddle and Mostert all reportedly carrying high ankle sprains, maybe we should temper expectations? I already have.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

      Nice article UK. 🙂

And the way I figure it we had a real nice season already. As we well know not every team makes the playoffs. Don’t collapse to the TItans and we are the #2 seed. Make us healthy again and we could play like that.

Most people that are labeled that way beat the label when they are given opportunities to beat it

The reality is the longer you keep playing a guy the more likely he is to win a big game

Maybe it’s just the way I think about football but I do not generally believe in the mystique of football. I don’t think there are guys that are winners and guys that aren’t. I think some QBs have skill sets that lend themselves to making the right plays when they need to. Some players are cool under pressure. Some see the field better than others. Some just olay smarter.

Tua has some really special qualities. I think he’s earned the right to be given more opportunities to win the big game

But I also think the way he has performed in clutch moments this year has been pretty awful. The Germany KC game, the end of the first half v the Ravens and then this Bills game – all not the way a franchise QB should perform

So when we think about Tua long term and the contract he might get, I think we have to consider those performances and I also have to consider his positive qualities. One way or another the decision of who will lead this team through 2030 is going to be in front of us. It’s a huge decision for the franchise and should not be taken lightly

So I kind of think drafting a QB and naming Tua your starting QB in 2024 is ideal

It give us flexibility to sign Tua later
And gives Tua more opportunities to beat the label

And the QB we draft will be ready in 2025 if we aren’t happy with Tua – or alternately that QB will probably give us trade value back

I don’t think drafting a QB should be viewed as giving up on Tua or an emotional reaction. It’s a smart move IMO

But for now – Tua gets another shot in a big game this Saturday.

I behind him and I think he and the Dolphins can beat the chiefs

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I think some guys are winners, and just play well on a big stage with a lot on the line. Some guys get tight, and can’t handle the pressure. This is in all sports, and for some reason, I think of the Yankees and Paul O’Neill and Scott Brosius. Those guys were notoriously clutch performers in the playoffs and especially the World Series. Neither were HOFers, but great players when the prize was on the line. Tua has not done that yet, and no one thinks of him like that.

Hate to see that. In the age of cell phones don’t know how he got away in post-game traffic. No high speed chase required. Read in another article that the guy was parked in the WalMart, which some of our folks have parked at.

  47. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Not sure about today. This was yesterday.

WR Tyreek Hill’s new quad injury is not a concern, head coach Mike McDaniel told reporters. Hill was limited Tuesday with the quad injury and his existing ankle injury.

S DeShon Elliott (calf) will not practice today, per McDaniel, but added he’s hopeful about his availability for Saturday

The wind chill in Kansas City Saturday night is now expected to drop to -21 degrees, the National Weather Service says.

During the Dolphins-Chiefs game it won’t be as bad though!

The second half wind chill should only be -14 with a real temp of 4 degrees.

  49. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Trying to have hope but, Dolphins are 0-10 in their past 10 games when the kickoff temperature was 40 degrees or below, losing those games by an average of 17 points.

  50. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Patriots RT Trent Brown said that people are being misled about Mac Jones. He basically said all their QB’s struggled and regressed because BB brought in his ex-defensive coordinator to be their new offensive coordinator. They didn’t have the staff to help them get better.

    Makes sense.

Also, another reason I think BB is gone. Pats players are starting to speak up. I think he has gotten arrogant to the point he has lost his mind.

The high tech cold weather gear these days is amazing. Went skiing first time in a very long time with Dameon (DIlly Dilly to you) like 4-5 years ago. Brought all my old gear but by the time the trip was over had bought a bunch of new stuff.

Those petro-fibers are like one-quarter the bulk/thickness but just as warm. You can layer them up as needed and take off/add layers as the temp changes.

  52. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Seahawks fired Pete Carroll today. Team was 9-8 this season. That one is a surprise.

  53. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

  54. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Another thing that has me worried is the cold weather will exacerbate injuries our players already have.

  55. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

So we’re obviously not going to get the ‘get-off’ from the edges that Phillips, Chubb, and AVG would usually bring this Saturday @ the Chefs*.

I’m actually beginning to wonder if that’s a good thing for us after all. See, teams like the Chefs* are so overly prepared to deal with a massive pass-rush off the edges. Perhaps our lack of edge-rushing might throw them into disarray.

I mean, if we can’t get to Mahomes on time, may as well keep at least one of our edges back for pass defense or to spy on Mahomes, right?

We might find fortune in this approach out of necessity. But with that being stated, our DBs will have to be at their very best in coverage… without X.

The 2nd half play, that made me lose my mind was the 3rd down to Berrios on our opening drive

The route was a half yard to short and he peeled back after making the catch

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Yeah, that was frustrating. I almost put that one on Berrios, but then I started to think it must be a timing route, right? Which means he has to run a certain # of steps then turn back and come back to the ball. So I’m not sure if the problem was the receiver, the play, or the play call

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

And then he is also just one option on the play, so you call a play and not every route may be going past the sticks.

I don’t know where Berrios was in the progression. If he was the 1st look, then it’d better be a route past the sticks, but if he was the 3rd option, then ok, maybe that player has to make a play.

      • manitobafinfan's avatar manitobafinfan says:

The run Josh Allen made on like 3rd and 23 or whatever the hell it was was a huge play in the game. Those are the sorts of plays that win games. Brian,
I don’t recall. It was a big play on a money down. It’s not always a play that may lead to a score, but it’s still making a big play on a big down…3rd down especially. It also may flip field position or burn clock at a crucial time.

Tim – The PR TD changed the game, but it didn’t end the game. The Bills scored a TD after, we had no answer. I can’t put loss on one play, we had time to come back, our offense couldn’t get anything done. We had something like 53 yards and 1 first down in the 2nd half. That’s how we lost

Buddy Harrelson was held in such high regard by everybody as a coach behind Davey Johnson. The fans loved him, the broadcast teams loved him, his players loved him, and he was just a great person by all accounts.
