Early in the process, Dolphins look poised to take a step back, or two, or three . . .

Here’s the deal Dolphins fans. The NFL Free Agency period begins in FIVE DAYS, Wednesday March 13th. I have no inside information on what our front office is doing, planning, hoping to accomplish, but I will tell you this. For those of you who want to see Tua get a $50M per year extension, if that contract is not signed and completed before March 13, the start of NFL Free Agency, then just scrap it, and let the kid play on his 5th year contract. I’m going to be as transparent as I can. If we don’t have the cap savings and money available to try and sign free agents, most notably, our own players who most absolutely deserve to be re-signed, then there’s no good, intelligent, logical reason to give him a contract at all. We need that money in hand, before teams with tons of cap space swoop in and sign our players, and other equivalent players like them are all gone. Here’s the simple logic, we couldn’t get past good teams with a talented roster, we’re not going to get past good teams with a severely diminished roster.

We signed journeyman TE Jonnu Smith and the Dolphins fans rejoice. Like they say in the south, where Jonnu most recently played in Atlanta, “Bless Your Heart”. If Jonnu was just an add after we signed DT Christian Wilkins (or a player of his caliber) and likewise for OG Robert Hunt, fine. We need every dollar and while it’s not that Jonnu Smith can’t help us, it’s just odd to be spending money we don’t have. It’s actually shocking to me that we had ZERO touchdowns from our TE’s in 2023. Durham Smythe is basically a #2 TE, and Julian Hill is a project that I believe might be overrated. Tanner Conner is probably a never will be, but somehow he’ll shuttle back and forth between the practice squad and the 53 man roster. Truth is, none of this matters until we have a solid O-line, and right now, we are so far away from that being that case. Our starting LT is still on the fence between retiring and coming back. We have no LG, Liam Eichenberg is our OC as it stands today, we have no RG, and we have RT Austin Jackson. So many excuses were rifled at Tua detractors due to the perceived inefficiencies of the offensive line, and we have some big holes to fill just to claw back to where we were last season.

Despite what some of our fans think here, Christian Wilkins is probably going to go Day 1 of Free Agency. It will happen even faster if the first domino falls, DT Chris Jones re-signs with the Chiefs. Some team is going to throw a boatload of cash at Christian Wilkins, and unless it’s us, he’s gone. That would be a damn shame folks. Some potentially good news is that FA OG Robert Hunt posted a picture of Hard Rock Stadium from the Dolphins practice facility which could be taken as a positive sign that he intends to come back to Miami. “Dark Mike” thinks he could be taking one last look. One thing that could work in our favor from what I’ve heard is OC Connor Williams who is rehabbing from a torn ACL is prepared to be patient in Free Agency and not take a lower contract because of the potential of him not being available early in the season.

Back to Tua, and I can hear the groans already, but it needs to be said. There are QB’s out there in the NFL that can take over a game and practically will their team to victory. Patrick Mahomes has done it so many times, we expect it. Josh Allen, who is not nearly as accurate as our QB Tua Tagovailoa is another QB capable of doing what it takes to win. SFO QB Brock Purdy, at a young age has shown that ability, in big games to do what needs to be done. If we’re going to put a lesser product on the field this season, and signs are pointing in that direction right now, it’s probably the most foolish thing we can do to throw a contract somewhere in the realm of $50M per season to Tua Tagovailoa. He’s simply not one of those QB’s stated above. If one player was OUT that was the reason why we lost. If any of you expect him to play better with less, and he would have to because even if Christian Wilkins was not a FA, we have huge question marks as to when both of our pass rushing OLB’s, Bradley Chubb and Jaelan Phillips will be available to play, and play well. We bid good-bye to long tenured CB Xavien Howard, and while we have DB Jalen Ramsey on one side, we have no bonafide player to pencil in opposite Ramsey. We have 1 Safety on the roster, (Jevon Holland), and I might add he’s been grumbling about getting paid. He’s set to make about $4.3M this season and will be a FA in 2025. At inside LB we have David Long, backup Duke Riley, and backup to the backup Channing Tindall.

The 2024 NFL Draft is April 25th. In a year where we have no cap money, we also have no draft picks. Well, that’s an exaggeration, but with so many holes to fill, the Dolphins go to Detroit armed with picks #21 (RD 1), #55 (RD 2), and then hang around until RD 5 as so many good players will be off the board, but we pick again at #157 (RD 5), #186 (RD 6), #200 (RD 6), and finally #236 (RD 7). Offensive line seems to be the favorite choice for pick #21, and it seems like OC Jackson Powers-Johnson from Oregon or Duke OC Graham Barton have been the favorites. Both are considered plug and play guys who will start immediately. If we’re unsuccessful re-signing DT Christian Wilkins, I’d expect DT would be our next priority, you have to win in the trenches. T’Vondre Sweat is a possibility, but he’d be more of a replacement for NT Raekwon Davis , not DT Christian Wilkins. DT Braden Fiske from Florida State would be more of a Christian Wilkins type player, and Kris Jenkins’ son, Kris Jenkins also fits that bill, but both of these defensive tackles are not the pedigree of Christian Wilkins.

I had seen rumors early on and before the Chiefs tagged CB L’Jarius Sneed that the Dolphins were interested in him. Now that they’ve tagged him, it seems less likely, but for some reason the rumor mill loves to throw WR Jaylen Waddle’s name into the mix. I can’t see that, that just opens up another hole and takes away a huge part of our offense to shore up the defense. It’s like putting your fingers in a place that’s leaking in 11 places, when you only have 10 fingers. Oh, we’ve signed two DT’s, Isaiah Mack from the Baltimore Ravens, a part time player, and i stress part time, only 22% of the defensive snaps over his 4 year career. We also signed DT Daviyon Nixon from the Carolina Panthers, another part time player (18%) of the snaps on defense. We have such an uphill climb just to get back to the roster that couldn’t win big games, it’s so darn hard to expect anything good in this upcoming season. Honestly, if Chris Grier came out and said “I swung for the fences last year, and we didn’t make it, so from here on in, I’m going to be more fiscally responsible, we’re going to take a step back this season and be ready to compete in ’25”. I think I could handle it. That would obviously include Tua playing on his 5th year contract and showing whether he’s capable of taking the next step, although with a weakened roster, not sure if it would necessarily fair. I don’t know if Grier has some magic tricks he’s going to spring on us and somehow save the season, but it’s looking bleak mates. Sorry, it just is.

I thought he already signed with the Hawks yesterday. I must have read that wrong or got some goof twitter acct.

    ——————————-

Don’t think this is the case, but on most of these FA aren’t FA yet. These are just agreements until players actually sign after 4pm tomorrow. They can back out and still sign with anyone. I remember it happening before. Not very often though.

Notice Jerome Baker above. He used to SUCK in coverage, but he really turned it around last year. I’d love to have him back if the price is right… and I’d LOVE to see him play on the EDGE at times.

  5. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Is Jordyn Brooks better than Jerome Baker??

    Brooks (4 years/63 games) – 309 solo tackles, 6.5 sacks, 2 FF, 1 INT, 16 PD’s

    Baker (6 years/94 games) – 382 solo tackles, 22.5 sacks, 6 FF, 5 INT’s, 21 PD’s

I missed that Brandon Jones signed with the Broncos. Sorry to see him go. Good player.

  7. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I’m calling it right now… I want Baker BACK (OLB). Hopefully he lasts in FA until we can find more $$$ to cough up.

  8. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I think Long and Brooks will be a solid ILB duo. That said, it will all be for nothing.

I looked at our depth chart. Our starting DL is LDE Zach Seiler, NT Brandon Pili and RDE Isaiah Mack who has 17 TOTAL tackles in 5 years with 2.5 sacks and didn’t make any teams 53 last year.

Long and Brooks both will be #1 and #2 in tackles in the NFL next year.

  9. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

OL depth chart right now is LT Armstead, LG Cotton, C Brewer, RG Jones, RT Jackson. C/OG Eichenberg and C Chasen Hines are the only backups on the interior. Kion Smith and Ryan Hayes are the only backups at OT.

  10. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Being that Anthony Weaver is a natty D-Line coach — and if he has any say regarding the Draft — I think the focus could shift from an O-Lineman in round 1 to a D-Lineman in round 1.

HUGE shoes to fill with Wilkins leaving town.

  11. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Other than the OL most of the offense is in tact. We need to figure out a couple of starters on the interior and need depth at tackle. Ezukanma needs to be the guy we’re hoping he can be and I think Smith gives us a weapon at TE.

On defense we’re definitely retooling and we have a new DC in Weaver so that’s going to be interesting to watch. Weaver likes a physical bully mentality. When he was DC one year in Houston he ran a lot of single high safety aggressive attack style defense. From what he said in his press conference he wants to carry over the Ravens philosophy of physical and aggressive. He likes to show blitz but not throw the kitchen sink too often. You never know who’s coming or dropping. More man coverage than what Fangio ran.

  12. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I DO think it’s looking like an O-Lineman and a D-Lineman (no particular order) with our first (and currently only) two selections through day 2… it’s just a matter of preference.

MM most definitely gets too cute or flashy. We talk about it here all the time while we’re watching games. I’m fine with coming up with innovative plays, but you don’t have to go to some damn play that has multiple motion and takes forever to get called and run to pick up 3 F’ing yards every damn time! How often do we watch this offense getting to the LOS with 4 seconds left and rushing to get off this intricate, complicated play and fail?! All these complicated plays take precision. You can’t be rushed or likely one of the 11 guys on the field is gonna screw up,

He needs to go back to the basics sometimes because he does not have the QB to make special plays. Stop trying to outsmart everybody with your fancy plays and win the down.

Sounds like Grier needs fired if that’s the case. I am interested in our new DC though. Let’s draft a hot young DT & OG that perfectly fit our schemes.

PS Aaron Donald has 111 sacks in 10 years.

    Wilkins has 20.5 in 5.

so there’s no comparison in production.

Donald has 500 tackles in 10 years. (154 games)

    Wilkins … 305 in 5. (81 games) so … About even.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Wilkins is trending up though. Like I’ve mentioned, those 305 are the most tackles in the history of the NFL, sacks aren’t everything, but Wilkins really improved in that area last season.

      • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I love Wilkins as a LOS tackler, but sacks are way better than pressures.

We won’t have “nobody” standing there. We’ll either sign a good FA … better than Davis at NT … and or draft a cheap young stud at 3 tech.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Davis has been miscast at NT. We need someone who either eats up blockers or gets push up the middle. I feel like Raekwon didn’t consistently do either.

  73. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Ravens ran a lot of “heavy nickel” with an extra safety instead of an extra CB.

Nice! Things have changed in physical therapy since I worked as a tech back in the 80’s. LOL

One thing the therapist I worked for liked to have us do exercises with patients that were not necessarily geared towards the injury (strengthening and mobility) but involved rehabbing the injury. They focus on the exercise (here boxing) not realizing how much they are using the injured part (pushing off throwing punches). The patient is rehabbing the tendon but the importance of this type exercise is gaining confidence and not even really thinking about “it” but just focused on the boxing. When they are done with the session, they are like “damn, that didn’t bother my injury at all”. Confidence!

Not sure if that is the reasoning behind this but it would have been for us back then. We did other stuff not boxing but that crossed my mind when I saw this video.

Not according to what I have read. We are supposed to be in real good shape next year

    ——————————————–

Don’t know where that comes from. We only have 50.2 mil in cap space with just 30 players under contract for 2025. We will get another 7 mil with the post 6/1 release this year of X but have a 15+mil dead cap on him in 2025. So about 57 mil in cap for 2025. It does not reflect what was done with Armstead. Armstead currently has a 20.6 mil cap hit in 2025. We don’t know what is going to happen to that # yet. We will still have some dead money on him but might gain another 7 mil in cap space possibly putting us at around 64 mil in cap.

NOT being deducted from that 64 mil yet are the contracts on:

    Tua Tagovailoa

    Jordyn Brooks

    Aaron Brewer

Or anyone else we sign for multiple years after today.

All of those will be having smaller hits in 2024 and pushing money to 2025 and 2026.

Then subtract the contracts our draft picks this year.

This is also not reflecting the adjustments made on Smythe and some others, though small, but reducing their hit in 2024 and pushing it to 2025. Ramsey’s adjustment is the only one showing right now.

So, when all said and done come the start of the season, we should be around ZERO for cap in 2025 with around 40 players under contract for 2025.

That is much better than the start this year. So, I guess, whoever you are reading is comparing 2025 to 2024. Yay, we have 40-50 mil more in cap than last year. But it will still be around 0 cap.

2026 we will be in good shape after we have to let Tyreek go. Also, no Armstead, no Ramsey. Unless we still have some dead money on Ramsey.

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

What I read is that we will have over 50 million in available cap space next season so similar info just different interpretations of it

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

hey, can you explain this to Grier?

… feeling like he kinda needs a refresher or

      a new Dawn Aponte work-wife.

    • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

we will have no Ramsey (his contract is voided at that point) but we will still be carrying dead cap for him. A substantial amount, like 18M

  77. Ken's avatar Ken says:

So what you are saying Mike E is that we should have offered a massive contract last year to Wilkins when he was still under contract for another season but we should not do that for Tua this season?

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

$21M per is not massive. Wilkins plays every game, brings it every game. No matter how much you like Tua, you know he’s one big hit from potentially being concussed and out of football. Besides the injury risk, he doesn’t play well in big games. Wilkins should have been an easy decision. You saw what Madubuike and Jones got paid. This is what happens. We had a chance to get him cheaper, we didn’t use the opportunity.

      • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Mike Tua is no more prone to concussions than ANY OTHER HUMAN BEING. so by your reckoning EVERY PLAYER is one hit away from retirement.

      • Ken's avatar Ken says:

Wilkins wouldn’t have signed for 21 million last year

  78. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Mike E … you are correct on Raekwon Davis.

He’s 6’7, so he has trouble getting lower than the OGs.

  79. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

  80. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Ken, then they are correct. At this very moment, our cap for 2025 is 50 mil. Like I posted above, it will go up to 57 mil when the release of X is official . But then it also does not yet reflect contracts on Tua, Brooks, Brewer, draft picks and whoever else we sign to multiyear deals this year.

Probably don’t have to count whatever money we pushed forward on Smythe and a few others as that should be wiped out by Armstead being gone after this season.

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I think the 2025 money owed Armstead was around 12 mill in dead cap which would clear about which would clear about 8 mil.

Who know though. They could have totally reworked everything. Will have to see when it hits.

  81. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Rocko – WTF man – Are you paying attention? Tua’s had 3 concussions already, and there’s a huge difference between him having another one and someone lese that hasn’t. I’m not saying he’s more prone to getting hit, especially if he plays like he did last season, throwing the ball away so not to get hit and never running in the open field. If, however, he goes back to playing like he did before last season, he could be done for with one more concussion. Got me?

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Think of my favorite past Dolphins TE, and how I railed against us signing him, Jordan Cameron. Do you remember him? lol

    • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

I am paying attention. You have this FALSE FEELING that he is more concussion prone than the other 31 QB playing this season. He is a year plus separated from the last concussion. Let it go. He is not any more of a danger to be concussed than any other human. (he has not physiologically changed to be more susceptible because of the TWO previously diagnosed concussions.) GOT ME?

      • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

now you can talk about your FEELINGS that he can’t beat good teams, but that too, is only your feeling.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

How he plays against winning teams has been documented. Opinion isn’t necessary, his stats speak for themselves.

  82. Ken's avatar Ken says:

I am starting to really like Jalen Phillips. The kid really looks like he is working his azz off to get back for next season

  83. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Rock – If you’re paying attention, then you’re in denial. He is at more risk if he suffers a concussion than someone who has never had a concussion. It’s a cumulative effect, and I’m pretty sure you know that. He doesn’t have a clean slate or anything. If he does, and he played like a pussy like he did last year, then I definitely don’t want to pay him.

  87. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

  88. New Age's avatar New Age says:

    Tim,

I never saw where Wilkins was offered a contract in 22. Can you show me a link to that because I’ve only seen offers in 23.

    Ken,

3 other DTs were paid around 20-21 million yearly at the end of 22 season. I’m pretty sure that 22 would have been agreed to by Wilkins. The contracts go up every year. Waiting just costs more.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

There were articles about it and Grier said it at his end of season interview that they’ll continue talks next season but he (Wilkins) wants to test FA. No numbers were public from what I read and heard.

      • New Age's avatar New Age says:

        That was in 2023

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

No end of the 22 season. The end of 23 he was a FA which is current. We tried to extend him in 22. His agent balked because he was betting on the cap going up this year and he was right.

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Grier balked at what Wilkins’ camp wanted so he said he was going to test FA. It was around 21-22 mil is what Wilkins camp was asking for.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

The reports about numbers was media speculation because neither party makes those negotiations public.

My speculation is we probably offered 17-18 range.

He ended up getting 27.5 so they weren’t on the same page.

  89. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Neville Galmore is 6′ 2″, 302 lbs. So, not a NT.

  90. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

  91. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

    @chrisbrockman

AJ Brown is 26 years old and the #Titans didn’t want to pay him as much as they’re now paying 29-year old Calvin Ridley.

  92. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

BBMike – that’s what I remember with Wilkins as well. $21-22M

    • New Age's avatar New Age says:

Yep, which was similar to what other guys, who had done less, were getting. This was in 2023 AFTER the 2022 season. Grier never offered before 2023, and we could have probably gotten Wilkins for $20 a year if he had worked on the contract during the 2022 season.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Whatever could have been even though I like Wilkins he’s not a $20M player in my eyes and neither is Hunt. But the market is so out of whack I do get it.

Remember when Olivier Vernon got an $85M contract with the Giants? He wasn’t that good of a player. He never lived up to it.

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

but he refused to sign that. Didn’t he do a “hold-in”?

  93. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

BBMike, the DTs we’re signing aren’t necessarily replacements for Wilkins or Davis but we need players at those positions to compete and for depth. I definitely see us drafting a DT in the draft, maybe two.

  94. Randy's avatar Randy says:

It’s not that Tua is more prone to get concussed. It’s that he now has a history with the NFL, so if he does have another one, it will potentially be much more impactful on his status in the NFL. Also, concussions get progressively worse the more you have…or so the current studies indicate. So, a concussion situation…while not anymore likely for Tua….will be much different in its potential impact.

I’m more concerned about his legs. He should start using them. See if they work.
