2024 NFL Draft – The Miami Dolphins are on the clock

As of this writing, the Dolphins first pick will come at #21 in the 1st Round. It’s possible we stay there, or it’s also possible we trade back to acquire another pick or two, considering the huge gap we have after our 2nd Round pick (#55) and our next pick in Round 5 at #158, which is over one hundred picks later. It’s possible Grier could trade up into an earlier using draft capital from next year’s draft, but the trade back is the more likely means of getting an extra pick or two. The roster is in need of instant contribution, this is not the time to start grooming guys for next year or beyond, we need at least two of our players to be playing significant snaps this season right out of the chute.

In our own FMU Mock Draft, the consensus chose interior offensive lineman from Oregon Jackson Powers-Johnson. Whether you subscribe to the theory that our center is already on the roster in Aaron Brewer or not, most experts feel JPJ will be an excellent NFL center for the next decade or so. JPJ could also slide to OG, most likely RG, where Robert Hunt was last season. We signed OG Robert Jones to a one year deal and he’s penciled in at RG at the moment, with Isaiah Wynn, also here for a one year contract at LG. We need a player to be a force on that O-line this year and beyond, because next season the majority of the O-line disappears, with the exception of OC Aaron Brewer and RT Austin Jackson, and if Brewer doesn’t improve on his pass blocking, we may wish for him to disappear! LT Terron Armstead, LG Isaiah Wynn, RG Robert Jones, OT/OG Jack Driscoll, OT’s Kendall Lamm and Kion Smith are all GONE in 2025. We do have our full complement of draft picks in 2025, and could potentially have the money to sign a 2nd or 3rd tier FA or two, and we’ll probably have to considering 3 of our 5 starting OL right now are not on the roster in 2025. Be confident that one of our first 2 picks will be on the O-line.

There’s been some hype that we might take a WR with our first pick. I don’t see it happening, and I truly hope it doesn’t happen. WR Brian Thomas carries a similar grade to a few guys we chose in our own Mock Draft, players like OLB Laiatu Latu, OLB Chop Robinson, DE/DT Byron Murphy, OT Troy Fautanu, OT/C Graham Barton and OT Olumuyiwa Fashanu, and I believe any one of those guys would make a larger impact on our season and roster than a 3rd WR, but I suppose that’s partially up to HC Mike McDaniel. The other WR often mentioned is the fastest WR in the draft, Xavier Worthy from Texas. He would be a huge reach at #21, but would make more sense ( not to me!) after trading back.I like to stress how much flux this team is in, because it concerns me. We just took the 5th year options on WR Jaylen Waddle and OLB Jaelan Phillips. S Jevon Holland is a Free Agent next season, and if he has a healthy season and plays well, may as well kiss him goodbye, unless of course we’re willing to pay ridiculous free agency prices. Perhaps after June 1st, we’ll address Holland, but we did just let 2 talented young starters walk in Free Agency just a short while ago, so we’ll see what happens there. BTW, we also have yet to give Tua that big contract, but there’s speculation it might come after June 1st, where more cap money will be available. I find that odd because so many here were sure that the Tua extension was going to be the enabler to keep our own players entering FA, and his extension would likely have a small 2024 cap hit. Who knows?

On the NFL’s draft page, they list our top needs as OL, DL, and TE. I can agree with one and two, not so much on 3. We picked up TE Jonnu Smith, and I think he’s going to be very good in our offense. Would it be nice to have TE Brock Bowers, who is a George Kittle type of TE, sure, but he should be long gone by #21. I’ve seen a lot of buzz about Texas TE J’aTavion Sanders to Miami. He’s probably going to be a 2nd or 3rd RD pick at the latest, and we have more pressing needs than a TE. If we go O-line with #21, I’d expect either a DT/DE at #55 or and OLB pass rusher type of player there. With both Jaelan Phillips and Bradley Chubb rehabbing from serious injuries, and achilles tear and ACL surgeries, we need to have an impact player available to pair with the aged OLB Shaq Barrett. We no longer have AVG to come and save the day. Also, it’s possible that our cobbled together D-Line of JAG’s (with the exception of Zach Sieler) could be fine, but I’d like to add some young, impactful talent there too. You win in the trenches, or maybe more fitting, we’ve been losing in the trenches. I want a playoff ready team that’s tough in the trenches and able to take on the bad boys like Buffalo, KC and Baltimore.

I fully expect to be angry after our draft (I know, I’m always angry, right?), but I hope to be pleasantly surprised. Shore up the O-line and get a top notch pass rusher, whether he’s on the D-line or at outside LB, just find one! We could use a WR if Erik Ezukanma doesn’t have a breakout season. We definitely need a Safety, especially if we don’t give our young up and coming star Jevon Holland an extension, and even if we do. We lost both DeShon Elliott and Brandon Jones in free agency, and Jordan Poyer is 33 today, Happy Birthday Jordan! Poyer is also here on a 1 year contract, like I said, a whole lotta 1 year contracts. There’s going to be a lot of new players on this team in 2025, good thing we have all our picks and then some! Here’s to hoping for the best and expecting the worst as always! Enjoy!

You can’t beat top teams without pressuring the QBs we have to play. We also have a shitty situation with Phillips and Chubb. Those guys probably won’t play in the PS and they may not play one and/or two the first few weeks. We can’t give up the early part of the season the way we’re built an edge rusher is a premium position.

  61. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

If you noticed how Chop was used he lined up all over the LOS. I don’t think we’re going to ask him to do too much. Set the edge at times and disrupt the backfield. Attack the ball.

  73. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I’m pretty sure we can use a 2025 3rd to trade up today

  74. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Dolphins were fielding calls to trade down and decided to stay put and take Chop Robinson. Then tried to trade back up into the 1st round. That tells me they went BPA on their board but tried to trade back up to a player they really wanted.

Who was it, Barton, Worthy or someone still on the board?

  75. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

    @AdamHBeasley

Dolphins GM Chris Grier said twice that they tried to move back into the first round. My guess is they were targeting Xavier Worthy or Tyler Guyton (or both!).

  76. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Half of respondents give the dolphins a B grade for the Chop Robinson pick. Though, 1 out of every 4 give the Dolphins a C grade.

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

When you look at the rankings from 10 major draft sites, 3 sites (nfl.com, PFN and ESPN) had Robinson ranked higher than #21. Two other sites had him ranked at #22 and #23. The other 5 sites had him ranked anywhere from #28 to #42 (PFF #40).

  77. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

    @flasportsbuzz

NEW: Everything notable that Grier and McDaniel just said on Chop Robinson and other Dolphins matters https://miamiherald.com/sports/nfl/miami-dolphins/article288035025.html… Grier said 4 or 5 teams called to trade up for pick 21, but there was no offer enticing enough for Grier to do it. Grier confirms he explored acquiring another 1st round pick late in 1st round tonight.

  78. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I just realized Pork Chop is only 21

both verse and latu are 23

so may have went with youth

  79. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I’m happy with the pick we made.

You only get one pick at a time.

    Who would you have preferred?

I like Barton, but he has a ceiling

due to his athleticism that Chop doesn’t have.

Guyton might never make it in the NFL.

Worthy is nowhere close to Hill as a complete player.

    I’d have settled for DeJean,

but he is already at his ceiling.

who else was there available better than Chop?

  80. Randy's avatar Randy says:

How many guys who can’t get sacks in college somehow turn into a player who gets them in the pros? Does that happen? Chop has A LOT of work to do. He’s kind of like Tindall was when drafted. The kid flies around and looks amazing on the field but the production isn’t there. Why? Is he a finisher? Can he learn and get better? He’s not gonna be beating guys in the NFL just because he’s fast and twitchy. I think he was a second rounder. Like Newton…he was way over valued.
I watch the Big 10, so I’ve seen him play a few times. He’s damn fun to watch. He plays with intensity. He’s a dog, so we’ll see if he can figure out how to actually play at the highest level and produce.

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Tindall wasn’t even a starter in college. Having given up on him yet either but hopefully Chop is mote intelligent than Tindall. Also Big Ten is NFL level esp. On OL. So Chop is not going to face better OL than he did at Penn State. Who would you have picked?

  81. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    naples,

I’d have gone OL all day. JPJ, Barton or 2 or 3 others. And, it’s not just the NFL players. It’s the coaching and the scheming. Whether you believe it or not the Big 10 is not just like the NFL. I’m an Iowa fan and even we’re not at that level. Plus, Penn State moved him around. Why? Maybe because he was just that special…or maybe to try to find him favorable matchups because he couldn’t consistently beat OTs.
I don’t hate the kid. There’s a lot to love about how he plays. I just didn’t think he was the right pick or the right value. Now, we find out what he’s got. I’m rooting for him obviously. He’s fun to watch play.
The comp with Tindall was explosive athleticism…small production. That’s all.

  82. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Ryder, feels the same as many on the pick. Feels it was a little bit of a reach but he likes the potential.

  83. New Age's avatar New Age says:

    Randy,

Those are my thoughts as well but better written. I hope Chop finds the sacks but he has a ton of work to get there and I think we needed OL a lot more.

  84. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Trying to write my article, but I’m dog sitting today, so easier said than done

  85. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Randy – the thing is I believe we can still get a really solid OG with our 2nd pick, but rhe drop-off at EDGE is significant. I think priority wise, they’re equal, but the depth at OLB falls off quick, while O-line is still strong

  86. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

    Randy and New Age.

I certainly agree we needed a RG as i don’t think Rob Jones is it as a starter, but Wynn is good at LG, and OT is set with Armstead (Lamm) and Jackson.

That leaves Center, but even if we don’t think Brewer is the answer, just looking at his contract tells me that the FO thinks he is.

So we don’t need multiple OL.

However we DO need help at EDGE with the injuries, and Chubb’s contract is up after this season, so getting a young replacement for him is smart if they think he might not fit the new DC’s parameters.

Chop ran a sub 4.5 40, so he should be able to cover TEs, which is traditionally one of our weaknesses, as well as help to contain running QBs, which is also a weakness we’ve had.

I agree with you that he needs to keep learning, but I think the modern way to beat these mountainous OTs some teams are getting is to just run right past them and not even try to go through them like a traditional bull rush. Chop can do that.

  87. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

    Yes BBM good call

I momentarily forgot WR Mitchell’s name.

He would be ideal at 55,

if we can’t get RG Haynes or one of the 3 safeties.: Hicks, Nubin, or DeJean.

I still think Coleman has Anquan Bolden / Deebo Samuel qualities we could use at WR3,

but Mitchell does too and seems much faster.

  88. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

A sneaky good sleeper prospect with high upside is Edgerrin Cooper.

We might not need a cover LB, but I think he would be a great guy to get.

  89. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    naples,

I don’t believe we’re set at any of our IOL. I’ve been saying it for years and one of the guys on the draft show last night mentioned it. With QBs like Tua, you need to do what the Saints did with Brees. I believe they were talking about Nix. You HAVE to be most stout in the middle. It is actually more important than tackle. It’s what allows him to step up in the pocket and get that split second longer to make a play. Brewer ain’t that and neither is Eich. Our LG is injury prone and who knows how many games he’ll play? If by “set” you mean we have bodies then sure.
I’ll be waiting for the “Our OL sucks” discussions by mid season. Lol
