Here’s the Dolphins 2024 Draft Haul

The good news is that the Miami Dolphins addressed to the 2 positions the majority of us felt we had pressing needs at first. Edge rusher and OL. The FMU consensus pick didn’t happen (Jackson Powers-Johnson), and yes, he was available when we picked at #21. The Dolphins chose a pass rusher with serious athletic ability and what could be a very high ceiling, but OLB Chop Robinson doesn’t have a great college resume (statistically) to show us at Penn State. The next pick was a surprise, at #55 we took Houston OT Patrick Paul. Paul had a tremendous pass blocking career there, allowing a minute amount of sacks and pressures, one of the best in college football. His run blocking left quite a bit to be desired, and Patrick Paul most likely has the longest arms in this draft at just a shade over 3 feet, 36 1/4″. Don’t think of him as a finesse guy though, Paul put up 30 reps with 225, an astounding feat with someone possessing such long arms.

We traded a 2025 3rd RD pick to move up into the 4th RD (Pick #120) to select Tennessee RB Jaylen Wright. I have to add to this that I took Jaylen Wright in my lone mock draft, but that was at pick #158 in the 5th, we took Wright at #120 4th round. I felt like we needed another young RB, perhaps not as strongly as Grier and McDaniel did though. We bring another track athlete, so the speed train continues. Wright is also a good receiver, as well as a good pass protector when he’s been asked to stay back and protect the QB, all good traits. Taking into consideration that RB Raheem Mostert is 32 years old, and despite the early success of RB De’Von Achane, Achane hasn’t been able to stay on the field, and RB Chris Brooks showed a bit of promise early last season, he was out most of the season with an injury. RB was definitely a need, and as always, running backs can usually contribute early on, so we should see a fair amount of Jaylen Wright.

With our next pick in RD 5, (#158), we selected edge rusher Mohammed Kamara. I like that we doubled down on what looks to be a very important need for our defense. Yes, we let DT/DE Christian Wilkins walk in FA, but we’ve now added a couple of good young pass rushers at outside LB with Chop Robinson and Mohammed Kamara. Kamara is actually the opposite of Robinson. While Robinson is all twitched up and a burner who didn’t blow up the college game statistically, Kamara doesn’t impress with that quick burst or have the speed that Robinson has, yet he did put up some nice stats in the college game. Kamara totaled 30.5 sacks, 45.5 tackles for loss and forced 5 fumbles. He plays with tenacity. I think this was a great pick. With the uncertainty of Phillips and Chubb rehabbing serious injuries, we now have a couple of young guys to buoy the pass rush, in addition to veteran Shaq Barrett.

At pick #184 in the 6th RD, the Dolphins finally selected a WR. There was so much talk about how the Dolphins were going to be taking a WR early, which in this writers opinion would have been ridiculous considering how many needs we had more pressing. Malik Washington (Virginia) is a compact slot receiver built like a RB (5’8 191). He has excellent run after the catch ability, and could potentially be a gadget type of player in our offense. Add him to the long list. I’m hoping Erik Ezukanma finally gets on track, but if not, then Malik Washington may get a shot, and he will also have to compete against incumbent slot guy Braxton Berrios.

Many here felt we needed a safety and with our second 6th RD pick, it finally happened. The Dolphins selected at pick #198, Safety Patrick McMorris from California. Nothing in particular jumps off the page about McMorris, but we sorely need depth, and I suppose he’ll get a chance to be just that, along with the obligatory special teams play. With our final pick (#241) in the 2024 NFL Draft, the Dolphins selected another WR, USC WR Tahj Washington. Washington is another slot type receiver with some legit special teams value. He’s a return man, both punts and kickoffs, and is also a special teams gunner on kickoffs and punts.

When evaluating our entire draft haul, it’s too soon of course to say whether we did enough to improve our team. What makes it especially hard is that our 2nd RD pick plays LT, and at least for part of this season we have our LT as long as he’s healthy. I suppose a strong showing by Patrick Paul could land Armstead on the bench or maybe even cut potentially, but if Armstead’s healthy and playing as he always does, not sure Paul fits into the plans for this season. Our first pick Chop Robinson will definitely see lots of reps in different places, all to allow him to rush the passer using his ultra quick get off and closing speed. We didn’t use any draft capital on the D-line, instead staying put with the multiple free agent acquisitions we’ve already made, and potentially might make once June 1st is past. Some potential players of interest could be the ageless Calais Campbell who would be nice opposite Sieler, or even our old friend Emmanuel Ogbah, who’s better suited on the D-line at DE rather than OLB.

On offense, I feel like Jonnu Smith will be a big factor for us. I felt we really needed someone for Tua to go to when either or both Hill and Waddle were covered and have that player do some damage. Durham Smythe caught a fair amount of passes last season but never really did anything after the catch, so Jonnu Smith will help plenty in that regard. I know we have plenty of concerns with the O-line and you can put the target squarely on our C Aaron Brewer. Our front office seem very confident and unconcerned about it, so hopefully for once, they’re right. I’d say our starting O-line on paper would be:

LT Terron Armstead

LG Isaiah Wynn

C Aaron Brewer

RG Robert Jones

RT Austin Jackson

At WR and TE, I’d say the depth chart at the moment is going to look like this:

LWR Jaylen Waddle

RWR Tyreek Hill

SWR Braxton Berrios

TE Jonnu Smith

TE Durham Smythe

At Running Back, I expect new draftee Jaylen Wright to jump the depth chart:

RB Raheem Mostert

RB De’Von Achane

RB Jaylen Wright (R)

At the bottom of the depth chart there will be serious competition between Jeff Wilson, Chris Brooks, and Salvon Ahmed.

At FB it’s Alec Ingold

On the defensive side, it’s going to look like this before the June 1st cutdowns which definitely may affect our D-line. Right now though, this is how I have it.

LDE Zach Sieler

NT Benito Smith

RDE Da’Shawn Hand or Teair Tart

At LB, how quickly the rehab goes for our two rehabbing superstars will affect the starting lineup, but to play it safe, I’ll leave both off for now:

LOLB Chop Robinson (R)

LILB David Long

RILB Jordyn Brooks

ROLB Shaq Barrett

In the secondary, this is how I see it:

LCB Kendall Fuller

RCB Jalen Ramsey

NB Kader Kohou

FS Jevon Holland

SS Jordan Poyer

On Special teams, I think we could potentially see our rookie handling PR/KR’s, but for now I’ll leave it o the incumbent Braxton Berrios.

K Jason Sanders

P Jake Bailey

KR Braxton Berrios

PR Braxton Berrios

I do think they’ll mix in Achane on kickoffs and once again the rookie WR Malik Washington, provising he makes all the cuts.

So in review, I can’t say we improved our team that much this season, with the exception on defense, where I think we’ll be leaning on both rookie OLB’s Chop Robinson and Mohammed Kamara. I know Kamara was a late RD pick but I think this kid is ready to go right now. I defer once again to PSU fans Brian in NY and M13 on Chop Robinson. I was hoping to shore up the interior O-line, where Isaiah Wynn missed lots of time, Robert Jones too, and of course the big question mark on pass blocking for C Aaron Brewer. The depth is solid, but unspectacular. LT, Kendall Lamm and LT Patrick Paul, LG Lester Cotton, OC/G Liam Eichenberg, OG/T Jack Driscoll and RT Kion Smith. Once again, I really like the upgrade at TE, specifically in the receiving aspect because I think Jonnu is going to have another big season, perhaps even bigger than his breakout season last year with Atlanta. He could really be Tua’s best friend, and a big factor on keeping drives going.

As always, we all hope for the best. I think the strategy was surprising in this draft, but I don’t hate it all, in fact I love the fact that they addressed the pass rush by doubling down. It was one of my biggest concerns, almost as much as the O-line. It seems like Grier was confident in his FA pickups on both lines, but again, don’t be surprised when more money is freed up June 1st and even after Tua gets his contract extension that we don’t sign a couple of the guys I mentioned and a ew more like C Connor Williams, if he can get himself healthy. There are a few OG’s still available too, like Mark Glowinski and oft mentioned Dalton Risner. We’ll see what happens on that front. The Jets will be abetter team, not sure about the Bills, but as long as they have Josh Allen at QB, they’re tough to beat. Hopefully Tua stays healthy, and steps up in those big games this season, and the rest of the team follows suit.

Chop Robinson asked Dolphins LS Blake Ferguson if he could have his #44 jersey number. Ferguson not only said yes, BUT put out a post to any fan who bought a Ferguson jersey to mail it to him at the Dolphins facility and he will replace it for them free with an autographed jersey with his new number on it.

Now, I know there probably aren’t a shit ton, but still very cool.

Look what the traditionally good teams did in the draft. They built their LOS. They picked OL. They know how a team is built AND sustained. These guys ignore the LOS, let really good LOS players go and bring in 40 WR or fast guys. We’ll see whose philosophy works. We better score 40 a game.

I know y’all catch bigger blue fish on the east coast but as far as the gulf goes, these were tanks! All in the 3-5 pound range.

Sharks were ridiculous. Five minutes didn’t go by where you didn’t see one. Many times you would see 3-4 at time. I was close to the surf early trying for pompano and there was about a 4′ black tip swimming and circling about 30′ from some people swimming. They had no clue. I had another 4′ black tip actually hit my gotcha plug and break me off. There were about 7 others who got broke off by sharks through the day. They were mostly inside the outer sand bar within 50-60 yards of shore. There were a few pushing 5-6 feet but they weren’t black tips. Not sure what they were. Maybe bull or tiger sharks. Tiger sharks like to hang around from the outer sand bar to the end of the pier. The big ones disappeared after the tide rolled out.

    ——————–

IMO, definitely YES to Connor Williams… even as a Guard, once healthy. He could be the one who makes our O-Line that much stronger by addition of just one guy.

I don’t feel nearly as strongly regarding Ogbah being this is a new Defense as you stated, but he’s no slouch on the D-Line and I think he’s still got gas in the tank. He’s fully conditioned to South Florida, so that’s a plus for his potential return. Those long arms of his are stellar batting passes down at the LOS, and he’s got chemistry with our returning players.

I’d bring both of ’em back, and best of all… they can’t break the bank.

5 pressing questions for Chris Grier and the Dolphins heading into 2024Will we get anwers for these before Week 1 gets here?By Brian Miller | May 2, 2024

Following the 2024 NFL Draft, Miami Dolphins General Manager Chris Grier should be all smiles, but when reality hits, he has questions he needs to deal with.

    Luckily for Grier and the Miami Dolphins, the season doesn’t start until September and training camp won’t start until late July. He will get $18 million in spendable cash on June 2 from the Xavien Howard release as well. No matter the Dolphins money situation, there are five areas of the team that should be a concern for the front office;

Safety – The Dolphins simply don’t have the depth at safety, and that has to change before training camp. We can bang our fists for a free-agent addition, but Grier is looking at a roster composed of two veterans who have dealt with injuries and a late-round rookie who may or may not be suited for the position.

Grier isn’t going to run out and overspend on a safety, but he will need to add at least two for the offseason. It isn’t a dire situation, but it is an area of concern now that the draft is over.

Contract extensions – Tua Tagovailoa remains the big holdup for other contracts.

The next four or five years of Miami’s salary cap situation will all be tied to what the Dolphins negotiate with Tua. Miami has more than the star QB to extend, though.Jaelan Phillips, Jaylen Waddle, and Jevon Holland all need new contracts, with Holland perhaps the most pressing after Tua. Holland doesn’t carry a fifth-year option for Grier, which also makes our first concern, safety, a bit more of a concern if the Dolphins do not extend him – something they should be trying to do this year.

As for Waddle, honestly, there is no reason for Grier to be waiting on this deal. The price for WRs continues to rise and Grier is just allowing it to happen when he could get Waddle done easily this year without waiting on Tagovailoa.

One-year deals – Grier has made it his mission for the last two years to bulk up his roster depth with one-year contracts. These low-end deals are great for manipulating the salary cap, but are horrible for team continuity. The Dolphins almost have no choice but to do one-year low-end deals. They have overpaid for players like Bradley Chubb and Terron Armstead. They have had to eat large amounts of cap space after releasing Howard and Byron Jones. With more contracts coming due, Grier can’t add years to many deals; when he does, they tend to be cheap.

At some point, the Dolphins will need to lock up a roster spot for more than one season. Entering the 2024 free agency period, the Dolphins only had 43 players under contract for this year. They now have 76 spots accounted for. Next year, as it stands now, without the rookies, Miami has 34 players under contract for 2025.

This isn’t ideal for a team needing season-to-season continuity; believe it or not, two-year deals can make a difference. It is something that Grier needs to work on, which would also allow him to focus on other areas of the roster in free agency and the draft.

Special Teams are still nothing special – Jason Sanders had a far better season last year than the two previous campaigns, but he can still be inconsistent, and one year doesn’t change that. Sanders deserves another season and is getting one, but Jake Bailey needs to have competition.

The Dolphins saw fit to give Bailey a new two-year deal (not the two-year deal we said they needed to give out), and they did not see fit to give him competition. Bailey was average last year, and the Dolphins are hoping they won’t need him much with this offensive system. Still, when the Dolphins need to flip the field, Bailey hasn’t shown the consistency to do that.

Danny Crossman will have to change his kickoff coverage given the new NFL rules. On the surface, the Dolphins’ subpar coverage team should be better off, but one missed tackle could be a disaster. The return game should improve as well, but the Dolphins were not stellar in this department the last few years, so it remains a problem and an area that needs to be fixed.

Interior offensive line – If we are being honest, the Dolphins did nothing to improve the interior of their line. Not yet, anyway. As we mentioned above, the Dolphins feel it to be necessary to add players on one-year deals. They did that this year with Isaiah Wynn to play left guard, but there is a lack of depth that includes two players who can be inconsistent: Robert Jones and Liam Eichenberg.

It is up for grabs at right guard. As of now, Lester Cotton is listed as the second-team RG. It isn’t a huge deal, as the Dolphins don’t officially make a depth chart until preseason games begin later in August. However, it does show the depth issues Miami has.Jack Driscoll, Wynn, Cotton, Chasen Hines, Eichenberg, and Jones are the Dolphins options for right and left guard and they are not good.

Miami did not address the position in the draft and they now need to focus on adding a capable veteran. Grier may not be worried about the offensive line, but it is an area of concern.

Best Offensive Lines in the NFL 2024: Where Do Jets, Cowboys, Bengals, Packers Rank After Drafting First-Round Linemen?

Which teams boast the best offensive lines in the NFL? Here’s how every OL stacks up after Round 1 of the 2024 NFL Draft.

The best offensive lines in the NFL don’t simply have one or two high-end players — they’re above-average across all five OL positions and offer ample depth for when injuries inevitably strike. Offensive lines are only as strong as their weakest links.

    I stopped reading right here….lol

Thanks for the article Krishna – This roster is constructed with a shaky foundation. That foundation is going to crack next season when more than half the roster is gone, and like Miller said, he has to work out extensions for what some here call our core, which is getting smaller every day because we let some go.

Agreed. Somehow my sustainably comment disappeared. Perhaps user error…lol

Say it again! I want to see it

        Lol….it went something like this…

I disagree with the notion that dynasties (or year in and year out playoff contenders) cannot be built in today’s NFL.

Congratulations to the NY Knicks, who eliminated the Philadelphia 76ers!

Apparently like money, cap space grows on trees

We should’ve extended Wilkins and Hunt, we over paid for Armstead and Chubb, we need to sign longer contracts…

Brian sounds like a mom can I kid

At best you can say we’re built to win now. I have some huge doubts as to whether he built it right. Joe Rose said it this morning that he was knocking all the articles out there about our team, and he insists we’re built to win now. I don’t see it when I look at our roster, but maybe luck comes our way, and guys stay healthy, and guys we don’t expect much from step up and surprise us.

Kim Bokamper on WQAM this morning, worried about the defensive line, specifically worried about Zach Sieler w/o Christian Wilkins. Someone here said that, but WTF do I know? I think Bokamper may have a higher understanding of such things, but maybe some of you know better

Another receiver in Buffalo: Bills signed former Bears and Steelers WR Chase Claypool.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Sweet! The Bills signed the WR of doom. It’s either the Jest or us winning the division this year.

    @NFL_DovKleiman

The #Bills also signed former #Jaguars DE Dawuane Smoot

Well, we have certainly don’t have a shortage of WRs in camp this year, lol. Teams will be waiting in line to sign some of the guys we end up cutting.

  44. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

They had to sign OBJ. We only had 3 boundary WR’s on the roster and 8 slot WR’s.

Mike “Captain Crunch” Kolen gets the int at the end of the ’72 AFC Championship Game to send the Dolphins back to the SB…

Was just watching this abbr. version only to come back to see we sign OBJ

He can make those tough important catches against good teams, when Waddle and Hill are doubled, important signing

  46. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

The interest in OBJ was real and it’s mainly an incentive contract.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Trying to find what the incentives are, originally thinking the contract should be 3m – 4m

Hoping the incentives aren’t team related and are not likely to achieve

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I saw one year $3M with incentives up to 8.5.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Yes, that’s what has been reported, but what are the incentives?

Incentive laden contract assures he give it his all
