Dolphins sign S Marcus Maye

The Miami Dolphins have added another piece that will help the secondary. Former NY Jets and New Orleans Safety Marcus Maye signed with the Dolphins earlier this week, but the contract details are still not yet available. Regardless of how long, and how much, Maye will no doubt be part of the rotation in the secondary as Anthony Weaver likes to use 3 safeties on the field at times. No doubt, that 3 man squad just got a lot better, as it looks like it will be Jevon Holland, Jordan Poyer and Marcus Maye. Maye hasn’t been a full time starter since 2021 with the Jets, but he brings the skillset to be effective as a free safety type of player who can also play physical enough to be in the box. That’s exactly the type of flexibility Weaver needs in that 3 safety look. My guess is we carry at least 4 or 5 safeties, which will be an interesting battle for the final 1 or 2 spots.

Right now, Elijah Campbell, who’s spent 3 seasons with the Dolphins is right there vying for the last spot, and 2024 6th RD draft pick Patrick McMorris, and UDFA Mark Perry from TCU will also be in the running. The secondary, for the moment appears to once again be a strength for the Dolphins. Starting the season with a healthy CB Jalen Ramsey and CB Kendall Fuller opposite him is light years better than last year’s version of Xavien Howard with Eli Apple opposite him. Our safeties were hurting at different times during the season, Jevon Holland injured both knees towards the end of the season, DeShon Elliot was also banged up, and Brandon Jones who actually began the season as the starter also was dinged up. That was the story of our season, just so many injuries, and despite that, the defense managed to stay competitive.

It’s June 13th, and our QB Tua Tagovailoa still remains without the big contract extension. It’s clear (to me at least) that the Dolphins aren’t convinced 100% that Tua Tagovailoa is the QB to lead them to the Super Bowl or he’d have his extension already. Jared Goff recently set the benchmark as he signed a 4 YR/$212M contract with the Detroit Lions, with $170M guaranteed. The parameters are set, and if it were a no brainer, as many of you here feel it is, then it would be done. Yes, the Qb is the most important player on the field, no argument here, but is Tua Tagovailoa that QB? I think he might be, I think the kid has a great work ethic, he’s well liked by his teammates, and it’s clear he would do just about anything the team asked of him to improve his game. His injury history is scary, and not just in the NFL. He put on weight, maybe 15-20 lbs last season and took Jiu Jitsu classes in order to help him fall without sustaining an injury. This year though, he wants to improve his quickness, so he shed that weight.

There are lots of plusses for QB Tua Tagovailoa. As opposed to what some of you think is a “narrative” that Tua doesn’t play well at the end of the season, whether it’s a regular season game or a playoff, or just much less effective against better teams is not a narrative, it’s a reality. It’s like 2 different QB’s. If you don’t think the front office is aware of the disparity, you’re in denial. Passing yards are nice, but they don’t win championships. Playing well in big games, winning your division, beating the tough teams do. He hasn’t done those things, and despite the state of the defense, Tua himself did not elevate his play in those games, quite the opposite, there was a significant drop off in his play. He led the NFL in passing yards, and managed to play a full season and remain healthy enough to do so. Still, that was his 4th season, and he’s done it once.

To Tua’s credit, he began his career with a Head Coach (Brian Flores) who didn’t really like him, or maybe just believe in him. We had veteran QB Ryan Fitzpatrick and it was clear Flores preferred and trusted Fitzmagic. When Tua did start, he wasn’t given the rope a veteran QB would be given, or to be fair, most QB’s should be given, and when he struggled, he was pulled. That’s tough on a young QB, but Tua persisted. He has 32-19 record, and if you can remember back 5 years ago, our offensive roster was not impressive. DeVante Parker, PrestonWilliams, Jakeem Grant, Isaiah Ford, Mack Hollins. Not awful, but Parker was always hurting, Williams was a flash in the pan, and other than Hollins who has actually improved his game, nothing to get excited about as a WR corps in general. We also haven’t hop a top tier TE here, although we hoped Mike Gesicki would be, he never really achieved that status.

Tua has proven he’s one of the most accurate QB’s in the league, and with a healthy Jaylen Waddle and Tyreek Hill, he can light up a defense. IN 2022, his year of multiple concussions, he was 7-3, until the dreaded west coast trip which precipitated 4 straight losses and then an injury (concussion) that ended his season. Tua was not available for the playoffs, or the playoff run at the end of the season, and either was Teddy Bridgewater. We relied on 3rd string QB Skylar Thompson, and we fought bravely against Buffalo and lost. Last season, another late season collapse, and yes, the defense was decimated, but the offense did nothing to make up for it, the NFL leading offense was reduced to less than mediocre. The QB that had completed 88% of his passes and threw for 5 TD’s in a game earlier in the season was nowhere to be found in those games. Against the Titans, 0 TD’s. Against the Cowboys, in a win by the way, 1 TD, and 3 FG’s of 53 + yards. Against the Ravens, 2 TD’s, 2 INT’s. Against the Bills, 1 TD, 2 INT’s. In the playoff game against the Chiefs, 1 TD, 1 INT. There’s no “narrative”, only facts. Tua has either been unable to finish the season healthy, or unable to finish the season playing well.

If you don’t think the things I outlined in the last paragraph are part of the internal discussions in the contract talks, you’re crazy. Yes, he beat the Baltimore Ravens in a wonderful comeback victory when the entire Ravens secondary was out in September and threw 6 TD’s. On the other side of the ledger, 2 seasons in a row played so poorly at the end of the season and in one season was injured and done, the other gave up a 3 game lead in the division and lost the season finale in OUR HOUSE for the division, no cold climate, warm as can be, and we melted in our home stadium. You need your QB to FINISH! The one QB who got his big contract that has done less than Tua is Justin Herbert. The Chargers clearly made a mistake. Don’t talk to me about Joe Burrow, he took his team to the Super Bowl, he’s a WINNER! A FINISHER! We’ll find out if HC Jim Harbaugh can resurrect Justin Herbert this season. I think it’s a difficult position, I think they want Tua to be the answer, but I also think they’re not 100% sold on whether he is, and I think that’s 100% fair.

NOW come up with a list of 3-4 BIG UGLIES who MIGHT be available when we pick in rounds 2-3 in next year’s draft. I’ve given up ANY HOPE of our current FO taking an O-Lineman in round 1.

      THANK YOU!!

And congrats to Mike E’s son on the marriage! GRAND KIDS are in your future!

We were one of the most explosive offenses in NFL history last year playing at least 10 different guys on the OL. The entire team was banged up down the stretch. It wasn’t just the OL. You can’t field a team of backups and banged up starters and expect the same results as full strength or close to it.

Why Campbell Decided to Keep Playing … and for the Dolphins

Veteran defensive ilneman Calais Campbell is still playing at a high level, and that was just one reason he decided to return for a 17th NFL seasonAlain Poupart | 2 Hours Ago

    Calais Campbell

Calais Campbell / Brett Davis-USA TODAY Sports

Calais Campbell easily could have walked away from the NFL this offseason without any regrets, but he also had some good reasons to return for a 17th NFL season. And specific reasons to want to do it with the Miami Dolphins.

The veteran defensive lineman went through those reasons when he met the South Florida media via Zoom on Tuesday morning after his signing was made official.STILL PLAYING AT A HIGH LEVEL

The first step in Campbell joining the Dolphins, of course, was deciding he wanted to continue his brilliant career, which began in 2008 when he was a second-round pick of the Arizona Cardinals.

Campbell could have walked away on a high note after his impressive performance with the Atlanta Falcons last season at the age of 37, but it was precisely because he was still effective that he wanted to continue playing.

“I never thought about (retiring) for very long,” Campbell said. “I mean, the last three or four years, I go through the season kind of like just with everything I have and try to empty the tank so that if I want to retire at the end of the year, I feel like I can go out and I feel like I gave football everything I had. But once the season was over, I felt pretty healthy. Everything was feeling too good. It’s like man, you play football at a high level still, why not do it one more time?

“The love for the game has never left, not even a little bit. I mean, obviously, there was a time where I was a lot more fast and athletic, but I’m still pretty athletic and still can get the job done on a football field. I’ve had to learn to use other parts of my game bringing out more strength part, but I still have enough finesse and everything else. I got a full a full arsenal of tools. But what keeps me going though, is the love for the game. Love for the game is number one. I really am just like a true fan.

“I’m still good at it. I don’t want to suck at it, though, that’s for sure. So like if I ever feel like my play is dropping, I can’t be that guy that can still deliver in big moments, then it’ll be time to hang it up. But as of right now, I felt like towards the end last year, I was playing my best ball of this season. And so I’m excited that I got this opportunity go out there and put my hand in the pile and try to go to the end of the year.”

    WHY CAMPBELL CHOSE THE DOLPHINS

Campbell, who had 6.5 sacks with the Falcons last season, said several teams reached out and were interested in signing him before he decided to sign with the Dolphins.

While signing with South Florida means a return to his college home, the former University of Miami standout listed the quality of the team and new defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver, with whom he spent two seasons in Baltimore, as the major reasons why the Dolphins became the choice.

” Very talented team all over the field, both offense and defense,” Campbell said. “When you go through the roster and just see so many people, I feel like if we can play together and really build that chemistry you need, we’ll be a force to be reckoned with.

“And really like the coaching staff. Anthony Weaver is a guy that I’m very familiar with, have respect for. And he’s a big reason I really believe in this team because I know the kind of work ethic he has and just kind of kind of man he is and I think that there’s people … it’s gonna be a top, very, top … I don’t wanna go too crazy, but it’ll be really good defense.”

Campbell is hoping to be one of the final pieces to get the Dolphins to the next level, maybe get as far as the Super Bowl.

As a rookie in 2008, Campbell was part of an Arizona Cardinals team that reached the big game before losing against the Pittsburgh Steelers and he obviously would love nothing more than to get back to the Super Bowl.

“I haven’t had a chance to play in that big game since my rookie year,” Campbell said. “And coming to a team like this, I feel like there’s opportunity there. Obviously, everybody feels like they have an opportunity to hoist the Lombardi Trophy right now. I mean, all 32 teams are competing with the mindset that they can be the team. And it’s hard, right?

“I’ve been playing for a long time and I feel like I had some teams that were worthy of it, and we didn’t get there. We didn’t get it done. But that is a big part of it is believing that this team has a chance and I believe that I can help given who I am today. I can bring a lot of value.”

M – why do you change the words “Tua has played poorly in just about every big game near the end of the season and playoffs” to “It’s all Tua’s fault”. Does that make you feel better? I mean you do realize that if our starting QB plays poorly, we have a nearly impossible task to beat good teams. Skylar was awful against the Bills 2 years ago and we could have won. Same goes for Tua against the Bills in the Finale. If he played a little better, we had a chance. He hasn’t played well in big games, and in my view. I’d prefer not to pay him until he does.

  16. steveccnv says:

“I’m going to play all over the place, yes,” Campbell said. “We haven’t really talked about like how they want to use me, but just knowing [defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver] and his mindset, we’re going to move around a little bit in different situations. There’s a lot of different things you can do in this defense as far as packages and different ways of lining up and doing things, but yes, I’d be very surprised if I don’t play literally [every] position on the D-line at some point in time in the season in certain gaps.”

  20. The Flying Pig says:

I tend to think signing Connor Williams can only help

whether he plays center or guard

I think Brewer is going to be a good fit and I like Eichenbergs chances to be a starter

but there’s a lot of unknowns on the OL.

having Williams will give us a lot of flexibility

  21. Randy says:

Williams is a better player than Brewer, and it’s not close. Williams was playing like one of the best centers in the league. I still think he had to prove he could stay healthy and do it over time, but he was balling. Other than health, why would you not sign him? Who cares what you do with Brewer? He’d give you a solid vet backup. I’d still play Eich at RG. He needs to develop, and he’s probably got a higher ceiling than Brewer.

    • Tim Knight says:

It does seem like the team targeted Brewer because his strengths are a really good fit in our offense.

Williams was very good but his knee injury could be an issue.

  22. Mike E. says:

Tim – The way McNeil is hitting, it looks like he’s using a golf club. lol

  23. Tim Knight says:

Didn’t Williams’ agent recently say he probably won’t play the entire 2024 season. Now he’s looking for a team to sign with. That’s kind of strange.

  24. The Flying Pig says:

    Randy

    I’m no OL officiando

but I really think Brewer was in the wrong scheme in Tennessee

that said, Connor Williams is probably unquestionably better

but he’s probably better at OG than anyone we have too

the big question is the money

i think we can afford to take the health risk, if nothing more we get depth out of it

    • The Flying Pig says:

also every time I talk about brewer,

I feel the the urge to mention that although the quality of his play may be in question

his availability to play is not

he started all 17 games for the titans the last 2 years

I want to field an OL that can stay on the field

      • Mike E. says:

I’d give Connor Williams a 2 or 3 year deal. He’s a starter, and a real good one at any of the 3 interior spots

      • The Flying Pig says:

we originally signed him on a 2 year deal – given how close to retirement he was, he might be okay with another 2 year deal

also it’s worth mentioning that brewer played OG in 2022 – so there’s some flexibility to work with for both players

  25. Mike E. says:

    Piggy – retirement??? He’s 27

You answered what I think any team is looking at. What is his price range?

    ————-

That’s the multi-million $$$ question, man… I have no idea. He may be healthy enough to start by game 1, but will he be in prime ‘game shape’? Does he want starter $$$? Will anybody give him anything longer than a 1-year deal to ensure he’s actually 100% healthy before signing him long-term?

Lots of questions here and not enough definitive answers.

All I know is that he knows the Coach McDaniel outside-blocking system like the back of his hand now, he can play Guard, and to sign him will only bolster our O-Line corps.

We may get into a bidding war with another team for his services, but no team can be so sure of his future to give him a multi-year deal. IMO, this favors US to re-sign him… and we have plenty enough cap space to make it happen. Probably a two-year deal with the option to cut ties with him after this season.

I’d do it in a heartbeat… regardless as a Center or a Guard.

    • mf13ss says:

The signing of Aaron Brewer certainly does NOT preclude the option of adding Connor Williams, IMO: both players are geared to our OBZ system and that means WINNING.

      • mf13ss says:

I must be honest, as always. I do have the feeling that we’re going to allow Connor Williams to sign elsewhere.

      • mf13ss says:

And… I feel that will be a mistake that comes back to haunt our house as our perennial O-Line injuries mount.

  27. mf13ss says:

    @AdamSchefter

Five-time All-Pro LT David Bakhtiari said he’s “really happy” with the progress from his latest knee surgery — so much so that he now hopes to play multiple seasons. And his goal is to play this season with the Super Bowl MVP.

  28. Randy says:

    piggy,

I have no problem with signing Brewer…but not as a long term starter at center. If you watch him play, he really struggles to hold ground…at all, really….and the #1 thing that disrupts Tua is quick interior pressure. Why then, do I want a center who gives up pressure a lot? I can see how MM envisions it. I just have my doubts. Especially since he probably won’t have great guard play at his hips. Brewer fits in an outside zone scheme because he’s small and mobile. Sure. But, If teams decide to force that hinge point, we better have an answer for it. I’m hoping for the best, but I’d sign Williams in a heartbeat if his health is worth the risk.

  29. steveccnv says:

He did tons and tons of voice work in all kinds of advertising.
I love the movie Space Cowboys he was great in it.

It is hot and humid. Where in NY are you? You get to see what lawlessness is like for real up close and personal. NYC is a frigging mess!

Temp and humidity are not bad. We’re kind of laughing about it. Gets way worse in Florida.

Nice – When I was a younger fella, I used to work at 86th and Madison
