I can’t believe we’re already here, but sure enough, the football season’s first tease is Preseason Game 1. There’s not really a lot of substance one can garner from a preseason game, but as always, this is an opportunity for some players to give themselves a chance to solidify a roster spot. Most of the starters will not be playing, and if they do, it will be a short time, maybe a series or less. QB Tua Tagovailoa who was just paid a mint will not partake in this game, so it will be Mike White and Skylar Thompson at the helm. There will be many roster decisions to make when the final cutdown to 53 happens, and the QB battle could be one of those. If they decide to carry only 2 QB’s on the roster, then White and Thompson are essentially fighting for the backup job. The Dolphins chose to carry 3 Qb’s last season, but due to the heavy rotation on the D-line, and the necessity to carry a number of backups on the O-line, carrying 3 QB’s may not be a luxury the Dolphins can afford.
So who are the players to watch? That depends on who you talk to, but there are a few I look forward to seeing, and a few others who I hope have a good showing to make the roster. I’ll start on the offensive side of the ball. RB Jaylen Wright should see a decent amount of touches and it would be wonderful to see him shine. Starter Raheem Mostert, who bulked up 15 lbs last season and had a career best. I can assure you the Dolphins aren’t going to overuse the 32 year old running back, despite having a year any NFL RB would love to have, over 1000 yards rushing, a nice 4.8 YPC average, and of course 18 rushing TD’s. De’Von Achane is a HR hitter but also a guy who already early in his career has struggled to stay healthy. Achane trailed Mostert by only 212 yards with less than half the carries (103) to (209) for Mostert. Still, Achane only appeared in 11 games due to injuries. Therefore, it’s so important that rookie Jaylen Wright shows the Dolphins he can assume either role if necessary.
Other players to watch on the offensive side is basically anyone and everyone on the offensive line. While most won’t be starting, we saw last year how often the backups were pressed into service, so believe me, this counts. For position players, TE Julian Hill has been drawing lots of attention in camp, both as a blocker and receiver, so I would like to see him give us a glimpse of that. Rookie WR Malik Washington is buried on the depth chart, but a strong showing in the preseason could elevate him. Veteran WR’s Braxton Berrios and River Cracraft both have a leg up as they have so much experience, both with Mike McDaniel and of course the Dolphins offense. I don’t believe WR Erik Ezukanma is healthy, and if that’s the case and he’s unable to play, I fear his chances of making the roster are slipping away.
On the defensive side of the ball, there are quite a few guys I really want to watch. OLB Quinton Bell who’s been a hot topic all throughout training camp while impressing reporters and coaches alike. Of course rookie OLB Chop Robinson and rookie OLB Mo Kamara are guys I want to see playing well. Despite many signs pointing to OLB Jaelan Phillips potentially being ready to play Week 1 of the regular season, I always prefer to err on the side of caution, and I feel the team will as well. Bradley Chubb, on the other hand is not progressing as quickly, which makes sense since he was injured about a month later than Phillips. I also want to see ILB Anthony Walker who also has been making noise.
On the defensive line, both starting DE’s Zach Sieler and Calais Campbell won’t play, so we’ll see a fair amount of Gallimore, Mack, Hand, Harris and Kendricks. Being this is preseason, I’m thinking we won’t see much of Emmanuel Ogbah who recently signed, but if we do, I’m curious how much time he gets on the D-line, as opposed to playing OLB. I maintain he’s better suited there, but last I looked, I’m not the DC. In the secondary, don’t bet on getting our first look at S Jordan Poyer in a Dolphins uni. Do expect to see a fair amount of rookie Patrick McMorris and veteran Elijah Campbell. Marcus Maye might also get some reps, as well as Mark Perry. I think Jalen Ramsey, Kendall Fuller will sit, but CB’s Kader Kohou, Cam Smith, and Ethan Bonner, who has also turned some heads in training will get lots of snaps. Mayhaps we see Storm Duck, who at the very least has an amusing name.
As per usghe, we hope to see some nice plays, and most of all, hope for no injuries. I don’t expect a whole lot of scoring, the offense will be as vanilla and as basic as possible, and same goes for the defense. I suppose I want to see if TE Jody Fortson has even the slightest chance of making the roster, because TE could be a place we carry only 3. Durham Smythe and Jonnu Smith are locks, and the way Julian Hill has been talked up, the tall, lanky Fortson appears to have an upHill battle. I want to see how the new kickoff rule looks out there, although this morning I was listening to WQAM and both Joe Rose, and especially Mike Florio from PFT feel that it’s almost certain that kicking the ball into the endzone for a touchback at the 30 yard line is going to be the NFL norm. That’s a shame, because in general, it can be such an exciting play, especially will all the speedy options we have to deploy back there, but such is life. Maybe the Preseason will be the testing grounds. Once again, lets hope we stay healthy and have no injuries!
GO DOLPHINS!!!

I love that Haason Reddick as basically retired if he keeps this stance. How did playing hardball work out for Le’Veon Bell? Reddick will be fined up to 2M for not coming to camp. He has already forfeited 100+K for off season camps. Fool should have at least showed up in NY. The Jets have all the leverage, other than the draft picks they may have lost in the trade.
I LOVE IT as a Dolphins fan.
Team is full of “speed” and they are all spouting off about being bullies. I will borrow from the venerable OD in saying SHOW ME! I really doubt this team is going to bully anyone.
^
I agree with ya, Rockphin. We’re SPEED based, not built like Ironman triathletes. 3 guys on IR already after one mere preseason game? I don’t like it.
That’s not to say we can’t win (even the Super Bowl), but our fragility and lack of stamina is already showing with 3 guys on IR already.
we don’t know the exact circumstance behind the injuries (rolled upon, impact induces, etc) but yeah the known tendency of faster teams aren’t as physical
Now, you can mix and match, but we seem to like svelte across the board.
Being bullies isn’t about weight. Speed kills.
When the bullies who are bigger and stronger play us, we haven’t had the answers. Speed kills, but when they shut it down, it kills us
Yep. Kevin Durant looked unstoppable beside Curry but was easily pushed around when he was the main threat. Football is much more physical that BBall and speed only kills when people can’t touch you. The NFL is looking closely at pre-snap movement specifically because they don’t want our speed to kill.
Sucks for the Vikings that their number ten draft pick is out with knee surgery after one preseason game! Injury bug injury bug go away! don’t come back another day! Just stay away until February
I will go on record to say that the Cheetah blocks like a MF down field and goes after his man. grrerrerrrrrrrr chomp So you can be fast AND physical. Reek is a freak.
When it’s 3rd and short we’ve struggled because we lack physicality. You wanna be a bullies you have to run over guys sometimes, not run around them
we completely agree. I was just pointing out I admire Reek’s blocking for his team mates. He pancakes guys.
Imposing your will is being a bully. It’s a mindset. This team has only shrank away from that when any bit of adversity hit.
You all know where it starts.
Rock – I feel like most of the WR’s we have are good blockers, especially Cracraft. Tyreek is unusual because he’s no diva superstar.
Lol…the Cheetah says, “…I would beat Noah Lyles.”
I didn’t realize that Achane lead all players in PFF rushing rankings last year!
Miami Dolphins: Get ready for more De’Von Achane
Over the past two seasons, the 49ers and Dolphins were in their own tier of running plays out of 21 personnel; each racked up more than 860 such snaps, while nobody else even got to 575. Expect that trend of deploying two backs to continue in 2024, with Achane listed as a starting running back next to Raheem Mostert.
Achane was one of the most explosive players in football last year. His 93.1 PFF rushing grade led all players, and he accumulated 13 carries of 15-plus yards on just 108 attempts. If Miami’s depth chart is any indication, Achane’s snap count should easily exceed 323 from the year before (albeit which was limited by a knee injury).
Yep…likely to be a run first team this year. Now if they can solve the issue of getting 1 or 2 yards on 3rd down without throwing they’ll be golden.

Why was Tart cut by Dolphins? McDaniel: “From a scheme standpoint, it wasn’t totally a fit.”
what a bunch of bs, he didn’t want to throw him under the bus
Since MikeE can’t watch video’s at work:
@AdamHBeasley
Dolphins injury report, per Mike McDaniel: Benito Jones is day to day. Dolphins are “being proactive” with Jalen Ramsey “with something he’s dealing with.” Isaiah Wynn, who remains on PUP, is dealing with “compounding stuff.” Lower extremity-related. (He had a major quad injury)
Thanks Mike!

Most injuries at this stage are minor, we hold out players for cautionary reasons a lot
The schedule is easiest at the beginning, not worried about OBJ, Phillips, and Brewer to start the season
if you want to be in top form at the EOS, you need not worry to much what happens at the beginning, as long as you keep pace
I’m am curious to see if the Tart waiver of yesterday says good things about 2nd year man Brandon Pili
He was on the practice squad all last season after signing as an UDFA in 2023
I don’t know much about him but he’s listed behind Benito Jones on our depth chart
Weaver’s sweet spot is development of the DL
so maybe he can be an impact player

QBs are doing a scramble drill in indys where they flee to their offhand side, have to flip the hips to the target and throw a dropped arm angle ball 15-20 yards downfield. Tua is ripping that thing, man. Clearly something he drilled this offseason.
@OmarKelly
Jaelan Phillips is working for a third straight day.
@chrisperk
Defense is lined up for walkthru drill. Jaelan Phillips, fwiw, out there w/starters
@OmarKelly
Jaelan Phillips is working during 11 on 11 and just jammed Erik Ezukanma into the backfield. Not a fair fight in trench warfare.

Emmanuel Ogbah gets us going with a super impressive rep. Holds the point and rides the wave on a Lamm block, thwarts the wrap block of Julian Hill and is there for the play on Achane.

Tua with perfect ball placement on an out to Malik Washington. Jorydn Brooks is on the trail hip, if that ball is inside at all it’s a pick, but not only is a completion, it leads Malik into the run after catch and leaves Brooks behind without a tackle.

– Tua Tagovailoa connected with De’Von Achane in the flat.
– Tua connected with Julian Hill on a short pass.

-The Dolphins moved indoors late in practice. It was heavy doses of Jaylen Wright. It seems they want him to have a wide grasp of plays.
– Safety Isaiah Johnson had a few nice coverage plays.
– Rookie Malik Washington had a drop on a dart over the middle from Tua. Later, Washington had another drop on a more difficult play.
– Jaelan Phillips rushed the quarterback in 11-on-11. He looks really good.
– Zach Sieler is still a terror to slow down.
– Mike Harley dropped a pass over the middle from Mike White.
“It’s definitely different being out here in the heat. You don’t get used to it, but it gets a little better over time,” Dolphins pass rusher Chop Robinson.
He’ll come into camp and preseason 6’3 254 and go into the season 6’3 235. lol

Tindall flashing in this game.
McMorris playing very well.
Tim, It seemed Tindall was playing a little faster.
He looked like he knew what he was doing. I know it was a game of 2nd and 3rd teams but I came away thinking we’re well coached and we have some quality depth.
I just figured out a way past Sun Sentinel’s pay wall. It works MOST of the time. If you open the link to the story you want to read (like from Phins.com News Wire page) you open it in “incognito mode” or “Private Window” and then while the page is loading (you have to be quick about it, because their popups will stop you if you miss the window) QUICKLY hit the “Toggle to reader view” button to the left of the address bar (or alternately hit F9) Bam, all the annoying flashing ads, forced videos, pay wall pop up, etc are all blocked and you get to read only the “story” part of the article. Which is what I want anyway. I don’t come to a news “Paper” to watch videos or listen to their pod casts.
Hope this helps you guys enjoy the content on SS again!

Was in on a meeting with NFL officials about rule changes for 2024, and they clarified there’s no rule change nor point of emphasis when it comes to the Dolphins’ jet motion.
Whatever’s been put out there, it doesn’t seem to be coming from the officials’ office.
Good, I like it, even if it just plays with the defenses heads

Ingold: Time to Draw a Line in the Sand
Miami Dolphins FB Alec Ingold Making It His Mission to Help Short YardageAlain Poupart | 13 Hours Ago
The Miami Dolphins added some intriguing pieces in the offseason to provide more options in the passing game, but improvement in one key area will have to be more organic.
Put another way, it just might be returning players who will hold the key to getting better in one offensive area where the team came up short last season: short yardage.
As the starting fullback on a team that was 5-for-11 in gaining first downs on third-and-1 runs and 9-for-22 overall, Alec Ingold says he took that disappointing showing “extremely personal.
“”I think that’s literally one of the job descriptions of playing F in this offense, whether you’re a slot wide receiver, a fullback, second tight end, like that F spot, being able to move the sticks, it’s part of your job description,” Ingold said after practice Wednesday. “You’re playing within those margins of the game. So the more that we’ve worked on it all the way throughout OTAs, being able to put it out onto the field, I think it’s gonna be fun to see just being able to make that next first down and giving us three more opportunities for those, you know, 60-yard explosive plays that are going to happen, but then being able to stay on track a whole lot more efficiently. So yeah, I did take that personally.”
____________
I liked him a lost last year…
DOLPHINS JUST “HAVE TO GO GET IT
“The Dolphins have talked all summer about being more physical and shedding their finesse reputation, though the focus has been on defense.
We indicated earlier this summer that more physicality was just as needed offensively, particularly in those short-yardage situations, where those extra first downs could make the difference between winning and losing key games down the stretch.
Ingold certainly didn’t disagree with that idea, as evidenced by his response when he was asked whether the key to improvement in short-yardage situations will come from better technique or more physicality.
“At some point you gotta draw a line in the sand, you just gotta go get it,” Ingold said. “Like that’s what it is. So, yes, we can talk about X’s and O’s. Yes, we can talk about technique. But at the end of the day, like, you have to move your man past that line of scrimmage so that the back or whoever can get that first down. So I think it’s a combination of both.”
Both, indeed!

ESPN sources: Bills Pro-Bowl linebacker Matt Milano, who left Tuesday’s practice injured, tore his bicep and now will be out indefinitely. Milano will undergo surgery on his torn bicep with the hope of trying to return later this season, possibly in December.
What did Milano do, for you to say that?
Meh, but
don’t you remember the late Tua hit
Milano is the herpes of the AFC East
the league is safer with him on the sideline
Guard Robert Jones had difficulty handling Redskins standout defensive lineman Jonathan Allen, who had a sack, but rookie left tackle Patrick Paul held his own during the drills.
Barry Jackson forgot which team we were practicing against.
Allen is a beast.
I’d like to see Paul playing OG, but we haven’t had much luck cross training rookies
He looks like a tackle to me.
Yes, but he can also drive block and lock in, once locked in he’s got you
Robert Gallery from the Raiders was a top 3 pick at LT, he was a turnstile most of the time, but he locked in and clamped down, was moved to guard and played well
Any updates on how Eichenberg is doing?
He’s doing fine. Thank you for asking. 🙂
😂
Steve, I think Paul is needed at tackle for depth. We know Armstead is going to miss games.
Lamm is a vet he can hold down LT for Armstead
I think Paul has started off so hot, that they don’t want him to lose momentum
I’d put Paul in every chance I can get at LT, and even start him to give Armstead rest, then switch out if needed in 2nd half
That is a huge loss for the Bills. Milano is a really good player and a key cog of their defense.

Yep. He’s dirty
Exactly.
Is it possible for us to have 2 starting corners be healthy at the same?
I hear that. Seems as though that era ended after the days of Surtain and Madison. Most frustrating to me as well.
I wouldn’t put too much stock into who isn’t practicing, Ramsey is fine
I worry about starters on IR, Kion and Tahj just redshirted, buying them an extra year
Brewer will be back soon, Chubb we drafted for his injury, Phillips back soon…
No devastating season injuries yet to key players, that’s all you can ask for at this stage
Poyer and OBJ are vets, they don’t need much to get ready
Gallimore is making this team. I like what I’ve seen from him. He can play all over the DL. He’s solid off the edge.
Along with Campbell and Sieler it’s pretty good on the DL.
We have some other interior DL who will play a role. I think our advantage is we have a lot of edge options and backend speed on defense.
Practice 16: 2024 Miami Dolphins Training Camp Notebook
Aug 15, 2024 at 08:36 PM
Travis Wingfield
Writer
The Commanders joined the Dolphins at the Baptist Health Training Complex on Thursday for some joint practice work. A busy day with both fields operating simultaneously concluded in the indoor facility with a familiar face making a play against his former team.
Here are the highlights from the day’s work:Practice 16, August 15, 2024
Top Moment
Training camp is an important time for players and teams to come together and get themselves prepared for the long season ahead. This extra month of football has the biggest fans living and dying with each report of what happens during these practice reps, itching for football analysis until Week 1. The results get the headlines, but it’s the first word in training camp that defines what this time of year is all about – the training.
Cornerback Kendall Fuller experienced the highs and lows of camp all in one day against his former team. On the first play of team drills, Commanders wide receiver Terry McLaurin caught a touchdown on Fuller.
“It was a coverage we haven’t ran as much,” he said. “It was a learning experience of just knowing how or when I can expect to use my safety, and whether or not I can use them or if I have to be more aggressive.”
Fuller responded no more than an hour later with the biggest play of the day, an interception against that same receiver. Fuller got hands on McLaurin with a re-route that forced the former All-Pro to the ground. Fuller secured the catch along the Commanders sideline and struck a pose for his former teammates, before his new teammates mobbed him on the field.
“It was just an out route that I love to make plays on, and I was fortunately able to make a play on it,” Fuller said.
In eight years with the Chiefs and Commanders, Fuller has 16 career interceptions and 75 total passes defensed. His veteran presence and versatility will be a key cog in the Miami defense.

Tackle Terron Armstead not only still produces at a Pro Bowl level but his knowledge of the game and how he imparts that wisdom on all his younger teammates is also impressive. But even at age 33, Armstead enjoys being a student of Head Coach Mike McDaniel, Offensive Coordinator Frank Smith and Associate Head Coach/Running Backs Eric Studesville, who have put together a unique run game scheme.
They find ways to continue to innovate. They continue to evolve the run game. They put the defense in bonds that’s advantageous for us as far as leverage, and then they allow the o-line to be playmakers. So I’m able to get up to the second level, the corner, or maybe even a safety, things that in most run game schemes you don’t necessarily do. You’re usually blocking a d-end or double teaming on a d-tackle or something like that, but be able to get up to linebackers, corners and all that, I feel like I get a chance to make a play.

Wow, some coaching going on…I love it!

Armstead didn’t work on Thursday, but the Dolphins run game got it cranking without the five-time Pro Bowl selection, and it was a team effort. The tight ends, offensive line and fullback Alec Ingold re-set the line of scrimmage, as Miami consistently chewed up yardage in the red zone period.Rookie wide receiver Malik Washington had the longest play from either side. He hauled in a 40-yard reception off the hand of quarterback Mike White. Washington outleaped the defender and survived the contact, and the ground, to make the big play.

The constant swings of camp continued Wednesday as the offense found a rhythm following a Tuesday practice largely won by the defense. Another theme that continued this 15th day of practice is the prowess of quarterback Tua Tagovailoa. We’ll cover that and all the day’s work in this camp notebook.
Here are the day’s highlights:
Practice 15, August 14, 2024
*Top Moment
*We’ve seen Tua Tagovailoa incorporate the no-look pass to his game over the years. Entering his fifth season, he might be on the verge of perfecting it, as much as one can perfect that. One of his touchdown passes on Wednesday froze a linebacker as the southpaw scrambled right, pulled up, flipped his hips to the middle of the field and then threw back across his body to tight end Durham Smythe in the flat. The space created a walk-in touchdown for Smythe.
This play comes on the heels of yesterday’s scramble touchdown pass to wide receiver Erik Ezukanma, and an individual period Wednesday where Tagovailoa and the rest of the quarterbacks drilled cross-body throws on the move.
It appears that Tagovailoa is stretching the bounds of what he can do within the offense. In search of that incremental improvement, any steps the Dolphins can make to improve last year’s No. 1 ranked offense could go a long way to earning the most important stat – more wins.
“We are testing the limits of this offense right now,” fullback Alec Ingold said. “It’s been fun to see, we’re in the lab. It’s been challenging. It’s tough. You’re only a couple of weeks in and you feel like you’ve been playing for three months already. It’s a lot of fun.”
….testing the limits..
Seems Tua is learning his craft and taking it to the next level. I hope so….lol.
