The Dolphins are hosting their 2nd consecutive game at Hard Rock Stadium tomorrow evening at 7PM as they welcome the Washington Commanders, who they have been practicing and scrimmaging against the last few days. One of the most interesting storylines is who plays and how much. This is a preseason game after all. Andy Reid, HC of the Super Bowl winning Kansas City Chiefs believes in playing his starters and getting them playing time so they’re ready for the long haul. Hard to argue the results Any Reid has yielded, since the Chiefs have won back to back Super Bowls. On the other hand, this is a 20 game season, 3 preseason games, and 17 regular season games. The Dolphins haven’t had an issue starting strong, it’s been quite the opposite. In 2022, the Dolphins started out 8-3, and then faded to a 9-8 finish. Last season, the Dolphins ripped off a 9-3 start, only to once again fade at the end of the season to an 11-6 record. To add, in 2022 we lost in the WC playoff game against the Bills and then again in 2023, the same result, a Wild Card loss to the Chiefs. In other words, I think HC Mike McDaniel has to be more mindful of “saving” players so they’re more likely to be healthy at the end of the season. That’s a difficult tightrope to walk, because as Rock would gladly tell you, ALL the games count.
All that being said, I do expect to see more starters play this week, and in general, more players playing. Last week there were a higher percentage of players on the 90 man roster that sat than played, I think it was around 40 total players that participated last week. That number will much higher and starters will at least see a series or two, including QB Tua Tagovailoa. The Dolphins made a big statement this week releasing DT Teair Tart, who some felt might be the starting NT. That spot now appears to belong to DL Benito Jones. Our rotation looked pretty solid last week against mostly 2’s, 3’s and 4’s of the Falcons. This week, they will see more starters and more of the 2nd tier linemen. Once again, picking up Calais Campbell, for less than market value was a huge get. I love Campbell opposite Sieler. You know how deeply upset the loss of Wilkins made me, but bringing in Calais Campbell was a great elixir and I feel much better about our defense. Hopefully the rotation guys continue to shine, meaning Jonathan Harris, Brandon Pili, Neville Gallimore, Da’Shawn Hand and Isaiah Mack.
The offensive roster breakdown is going to be very interesting to me. How many QB’s, WR’s, RB, TE’s and OL will we carry. We carried 9 OL last season, I’d expect the same this season. LT Terron Armstead, LG Robert Jones, C Aaron Brewer, RG Liam Eichenberg and RT Austin Jackson. Is it possible that if projected LG starter Isaiah Wynn isn’t healthy enough to play the first 4 weeks that he gets cut? LT Patrick Paul and T Kendall Lamm are locked in. It appears that T/G/C Jack Driscoll is a shoe in as well. That leaves one more spot, and don’t be surprised if it’s not Wynn. You can only wait so long, and be ever so hopeful. G Lester Cotton, T Ryan Hayes, OG’s Andrew Meyer, Seth Harlow and Matthew Jones are all available now, and that just might factor in this decision.
AS for WR, I have no idea which way this could go. Tyreek Hill, Jaylen Waddle and OBJ are locked. After that though, it’s a dogfight. With a roster of smaller, less physical WR’s, you’d think third year WR Erik Ezukanma 6’2 210 might have a leg up, but he’s been often injured, and that will hurt him as vies to make the roster. When I say physical, I mean catching contested balls, and running after the catch. We haven’t see either of those per se from EZ, but we have seen him with the football on end arounds, and maybe a screen or two, and he’s the most physical one with the ball in his hands of the bunch. Veteran WR River Cracraft is a savvy guy who can get open and is an excellent blocker in the pass game. If I had to pick a player I think faces the steepest uphill battle to make the roster, it’s Braxton Berrios. I feel that rookie WR Malik Washington is his replacement, so I’m thinking Hill, Waddle, OBJ, Cracraft, EZ and Washington, if we carry 6 WR’s. Early in the season we carried 5 wideouts, later 6.
The Tight End battle will be another one to watch. The top 3 are set, and perhaps that’s all we carry. Durham Smythe, Jonnu Smith and Julian Hill are locked. We know they love potential of Tanner Conner, but will it ever be realized in a Dolphins uniform? Conner left PS 1 against the Falcons with potentially a rib injury, but nothing was confirmed on that front. Yeah, he looked great on that long catch and run play, but can he play more than 3 plays without getting hurt? Former Chiefs TE Jody Fortson, who seems more like a big WR is another player hoping to make the roster. Hayden Rucci is the other guy fighting for a roster spot, and don’t be surprised if we carry on three.
The RB battle might be a little easier to decipher. Well, at least as far as the top 3, which are co-starters Raheem Mostert and De’Von Achane, and then rookie sensation Jaylen Wright. Who wins that final roster spot, and yes, we’ll almost certainly be carrying 4 running backs, will probably be determined after the preseason. Veteran Jeff Wilson Jr., Chris Brooks and Salvon Ahmed will be battling for the final spot. Both Wilson and Brooks are two of the more physical runners in the group, but age is on Brooks side, experience on Wilson’s. Ahmed, who seems to always be counted somehow always sticks because MM loves the guy. FB Alec Ingold is locked in. I think it will be Brooks, but this last spot is very unpredictable
Once again, lets hope for no injuries, and some good, clean play all around on both offense and defense. We’re still going to be seeing lots of basic, vanilla stuff from both our team and the opposition, but that’s when you can really gauge game play. No one is going to be fooled out there, it’s just mano a mano, so if you want to make the roster, you’d better show well on that game film or you may be looking for a job next week. There’s a different kind of excitement now, this is Tua’s team, he’s confident, happy, and poised to take the next step in his career. Just stay healthy, and that goes of course not just for Tua, but the entire roster, as that was our undoing at the end of the season last year. Such a pleasure to see OLB Jaelan Phillips activated off the PUP! I’m so excited for him and our defense. We have to be careful with him, we need him around at the end, so Chop Robinson, Quinton Bell, Emmanuel Ogbah and Mo Kamara have to be effective when the big guy rests.
GO DOLPHINS!!!

foist!
If you ain’t first you’re last.
I love Campbell opposite Sieler
Mike, you haven’t even seen him yet in person, he’s massive and looks like he’s unstoppable
No doubt, he’s a huge dude, and he knows how to play the position, and he can still play
nice work Mike!
Thanks Boulder
a positive on guys nicked up during camp, there’s less chance they get a serious injury, while they’re sitting out
posted on the wrong blog originally
Not gameday, that’s tomorrow.
We needed Robert Hunt to play 70% of offensive snaps to get a 3rd comp.
Will have to see how much time he will miss.
Odd being carted off with a shoulder injury though.
HEY! I got mentioned in an article!! Wooooohooooo! I’m famous!!
(infamous)
Pili really does play with reckless abandon. He looks like he’s barely in control some times. (not in a bad way, more like he’s falling down hill without regard to his body)
Hopefully the rotation guys continue to shine, meaning Jonathan Harris, Brandon Pili, Neville Gallimore, Da’Shawn Hand and Isaiah Mack.
I haven’t heard anything about these guys shining so far in camp, but I hope a few of them take the Seiler rout and break out to be a very good / great player after not being highly drafted. Campbell is almost my f’n age. We need someone to step up for NEXT season also. Although Grief doesn’t care about next year or the year after because he is fired after next year if we don’t get past the Wild Card. He is mortgaging the Dolphins future to try and save his job this year.
We are currently 65M over the cap next year (before any roll over of this year’s left over) and already have 20M in dead cap. (Tua’s Cap hit in ’26 is 63M) Incompetent ass is spending on credit cards like a wife waiting to tell her husband she is filing for divorce!

Good article Mike! (How could it not be, my name was in it!)
I agree on the running back room. I’m hoping that Brooks shines, although I do not dislike Wilson, I just want the young guys to step up!
Thanks Rock

So, as you guys know, I don’t do Fantasy Football, but ESPN can go stick their heads in a gas oven.
Looking at these rankings from ESPN and the projections, they think every one of our guys are going to worse than last year. (substantially worse) except for Achane who they give a slight bump.
Thanks again, Mike E.! It’s nice to start learning some of the new names and positions…lol.
And, I agree with Rock about seeing more of the younger guys. If we can find a few more acorns this year between the latter rounds and UDFAs, that would be awesome, imo.
Thanks Krishna
Rock – with your new celebrity status, I’d think if you went to Club Liv, they’d probably comp you for the entire evening, admission and drinks of course
Mike, I am friends with the President of Fontainebleau (where the real club LIV Miami Beach is) I already get comped entry and VIP status, if I ever go. (I’ve only ever gone twice because that is REALLY not my scene! Womp womp womp womp flash flash flash flash (I can’t stand the “music” and It doesn’t start happening until midnight at the earliest!)
Ok, then maybe I’ll drop your name if I decide to head over there! 🙂
Sam Ponder fired by ESPN. Their Loss.
RGIII let go also.
Not sure if I ever heard of Sam Ponder . . . I never watch ESPN
Any relation to QB Christian Ponder?
Sam and Christian are married.

obligatory GO YOUNG MAN!
Despite being the Miami Dolphins’ top draft choice in 2023, cornerback Cam Smith did not exactly burst onto the scene.
Smith could not impress former defensive coordinator Vic Fangio. He could not show he was worthy of repetitions in games, as he only had two tackles all season.
To make matters worse, Smith sustained a soft-tissue injury, which caused him to miss some time in training camp this season. The missed time allowed 2023 undrafted free agent Ethan Bonner to get more repetitions. Bonner has played well in Smith’s absence.
Fortunately for Smith, new defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver gives him a clean slate. He is having a brand new start, and he is thankful for the opportunity he has with Weaver and the Dolphins.
“Kind of just instilling confidence that he knows I’m a baller,” Smith said this week after practice. “So just making sure that every day he knows that I’m going to be doing what I’m supposed to do, bringing energy, doing everything I’m supposed to do.”
Weaver is sympathetic to what Smith went through last season. He is looking to instill confidence in Smith. He wants him to have every opportunity to succeed,
“So for me and for us, and I think in order to get the best version of him, which we just started to see prior to the injury, he needs to be confident,” Weaver said, “He can’t be afraid to go out on that practice field and make mistakes and fear repercussions, particularly at the corner spot.
“Take the corner spot out of it — whether it’s a corner spot, defensive end, anybody on that football field — if you don’t step between those lines with confidence, you don’t have a chance. You’re already beat. So all I’m challenging Cam is to go out there and be confident, be who you are, have faith in your skills and challenge your receivers. And good things will happen.”
With Bonner sidelined this week with an injury, Smith received more repetitions in practice on Wednesday. He also got more work in the joint practice with the Washington Commanders on Thursday, and Smith performed well when called upon.
Smith is scheduled to figure prominently in the game against the Commanders on Saturday night. Smith is looking to put himself in a position to contend for the No. 3 outside cornerback position behind projected starters Jalen Ramsey and Kendall Fuller. Smith knows the game reps will majorly impact his immediate future.
“They’re very vital,” Smith said. “Just kind of making sure all of the nooks and crannies work itself out throughout the year. This is where you work through everything, see where your mistakes are, see what you lack and all of that stuff. So, it’s really good.”
Fuller also has confidence in Smith.
“If you can come out here and play with conviction out here on the practice field, you’ll be able to learn things that you can or can’t do,” Fuller said. “I think that is something that Cam [Smith] has been doing, even his first practice back. You could see him showing up all over the tape and things like that, so I’m excited for him.”
I’d love Smith to have a real strong showing tomorrow
🤞🤞
MikeE,
I think Sam Ponder is married to Christian Ponder.
So is Sam short for Samantha, or is it a dude?
G-O-O-G-L-E-D it, she’s a babe
Lol

Nice write, Mike!
Thanks Tim
Teair Tart signed with the Chargers
Is Mo Kamara injured? I haven’t heard much about him.
HAVEN’t heard a whole lot about Miami’s O-Line so far this preseason. How did the huge rookie from Texas A & M look to you guys??
Nice write Mike. I’m hoping the Dolphins have some quality back-up O-Linemen this year. WOULDN’T THAT BE NICE FOR A CHANGE??
Driscoll and Paul have been impressive.

I can’t see worth a shit sometimes on my phone
just brought up ESPN and the 1st icon is Fins, the 2nd is fantasy football for some reason, I thought it was the jets logo, was ready to go off until I noticed what it was🙄
OD – Patrick Paul looked pretty good in his first action. He’s surprisingly large, and also agile and more athletic than I expected. I saw him using his size on one play, it looked more like a screen in basketball than a block, he didn’t use his arms, but it was effective because of the size advantage he has. That being said, he has extremely long arms, more than 36″ long, so if he gets his hands on someone he will immediately have the upper hand because they won’t be able to get into his body
So far it looks like he has upside to be our future LT.
Yeah, it’s early though. We’ll get a better look tomorrow
He’s got good people around him in the coaches and Armstead.

————————–
He was dinged up a little. Nothing major but caused him to miss the 1st preseason game.
He has been practicing though. Hope we see him tomorrow night.
Actually, I haven’t heard any updates on what the injury was or if he practiced this week now that I think about it.
No other music videos can come close to the production in every Falling In Reverse video. They must have an insane budget. Visual effects are better than most movies.
Nice..
BTW, he is not calling out religion or mocking. He’s trying to call out people for following blindly instead of choosing between good and evil. He’s being crucified for calling out the mainstream.

Raheem Mostert on Tua Expectations and Who’s the Fastest Dolphins Player | The Rich Eisen Show
Mostert is such an even keel guy.
I had an idea earlier today to do an ALL-BUST draft team for our Phins, but I’m only going to go back to since Steve Ross took over (2009-present), and only day 1 and day 2 selections…
QB: Pat White (2nd round, 2009)
RB: Daniel Thomas (DT3) (2nd round, 2011)
T: Jonathan Martin (2nd round, 2012)
LG/C: Michael Deiter (3rd round, 2019)
C/T/G?: Liam Eichenberg (2nd round, 2021)
RG/T: Billy Turner (3rd round, 2014)
RT: Dallas Thomas (3rd round, 2013)
TE: Michael Egnew (3rd round, 2012)
WR: Patrick Turner (3rd round, 2009)
WR: Leonte Caroo (3rd round, 2016)
DE: Dion Jordan (1st round, 2013)
DE: Jared Odrick (1st round, 2010)
DT: Jordan Phillips (2nd round, 2015)
LB: Charles Harris (1st round, 2017)
LB: Raekwon McMillan (2nd round, 2017)
LB: Channing Tindall (3rd round, 2022)
CB: Noah Igbinoghene (1st round, 2020)
CB: Cordrea Tankersley (3rd round, 2017)
CB: Jamar Taylor (2nd round, 2013)
S: Minkah Fitzpatrick (1st round, 2018… he no longer plays for us, but got Austin Jackson for the trade)
S: Brandon Jones (3rd round, 2020… he no longer plays for us, allowed him to walk in FA to the Broncos)
FAR too many whiffs over the last 15 years, seriously. And that’s exactly why we’ve been PAYING through the nose via FA acquisitions.
Tim,
Yes, I’m nitpicking on Jared Odrick above…
IT’S A MIAMI DOLPHINS GAME DAY!!!!!!!!!! LET’S GOOOOOO!!!!!!

5 Big Miami Dolphins Questions Ahead of Preseason Game vs. Washington Commanders (profootballnetwork.com)
It will be interesting to see who starts on the IOL when Tua is out there. Especially at center.
@OmarKelly
Name me a tight end who can high point balls, deliver RAC, block, be a fullback, and carry the ball like a tailback?
I only worry about Jonnu Smith’s health (he’s nursing something) and his ability to master the offense
If you miss the game tonight, it will be replayed on NFL Network at 9am ET tomorrow.
Also, 12pm ET on Wednesday.
M13
That list makes me sad. Lol
2nd and 3rd rounds in 2009. Terrible!
I wonder if Kirk Herbstreit will be the next one gone from ESPN
M – I wouldn’t give up on Eichenberg just yet. I think he could be a good G who can also play C or T
Also remember, he played C last season while being injured. He really stepped for us
Brandon Jones played well when healthy.
M13, you should do free agent signing busts. Free agents we brought in who were not worth the money and/or draft picks spent to get them.
I would lean toward putting Chubb on that list.
you’re tough
What about Armstead, Conner Williams, Ramsey
Will do when I get a little time, probably later today.
Maybe Sieler is the standard🤔

I do agree, but I had to put someone on the list who could play Center. Let us just say that Eich hasn’t lived up to his 2nd round draft status… yet. Hopefully, he becomes a stud very soon.
Been at work 5 1/2 hours and haven’t done shit. It’s nice getting paid to watch youtube video’s. lol
I probably just screwed myself come game time.
I wonder if any of our top guys play tonight?
BB Mike (and others),
Found time to make this one, but it’s more difficult than I had originally thought. Please add to this list to make it fuller, if you would…
Miami Dolphins ALL-BUST FA/traded-for team since Steve Ross took over (2009-present)
QB: Josh Rosen (traded 2019 2nd rounder and 2020 5th rounder to ARZ)
WR: Will Fuller (2021 FA, 1 yr/$10M)
LT: Branden Albert (2014 FA, 5yrs/$47M… only 1 good year, in ’15)
RT: Marc Colombo (2011 FA, can’t find contract details: anything over 1yr/$.01 was too much)
LB: Dannell Ellerbe (2013 FA, 5 yrs/$35M)
LB: Kyle Van Noy (2020 FA, 4 yrs/$51M)
CB: Byron JOnes (2020 FA, 5 yrs/$82M)
CB: Byron Maxwell (2016 trade swapping 1st rounders w/ Philly + Kiko Alonso, inherited balance of 2nd season: 6 yrs/$63M)
Dang we done some bad deals
if those are the only guys on the list, and most of those I don’t agree with, just Rosen, Fuller and Jones, then we killed it
I’m almost positive I’ve missed out on some other bad deals.
LOVED Branden Albert, but we should have acquired him 2 years earlier, IMO.
Yes, I nitpicked a bit on some of these deals, but they didn’t work out, IMO.

SAME HERE, my Pachydermata-traveling friend! It’s damn near criminal.
I suppose if we want to get technical, you’re an Afrotheria-traveling friend of mine.
Tim, they said most all starters will play some. Doubt that includes Armstead or those nursing an injury like Ramsey, Poyer and Holland. Tua is supposed to play a series or two so we should see our possible starting OL for game 1 minus Armstead. I don’t think Brewer will be ready for game 1. Though it’s still 3 weeks away. Waddle still not practicing either.
Thanks man.
We’ll see two Hill’s tonight. Tyreek flying downfield and Julian blasting someone in the run game.
I think we’ll see a lot of running tonight, with medium passes to TE, backs and slot guys.
Maybe one deep one to the cheetah 🐆 cause we can.
M, I don’t like Eichenberg on that list. Even though Solomon Kindley was a fourth rounder I think he belongs on there instead, he burned me bad I was totally wrong on him I thought he’d be better than Hunt. Oops.
At least Eichenberg gets on the field and has improved every year.
I thought he was going to be good also
How long ago was that Steelers Wide Receiver who sucked ass and was a big pussy?
Mike Wallace?
^
Xavier Worthy looked good for Chiefs today. Their offense is scarier than ours.
Though, Lions hardly playing starters.
Ken, Jake Bates with an easy 55 yarder.
How did NFL teams miss on this guy?
They didn’t the Lions signed him.
I wanted him so bad

you’re scaring everyone away from posting about the game
Eich is starting at center
Starting OL is Lamm, Jones, Eich, Cotton and Jackson.
I was in Mike’s camp on Tua’s contract. I am now sold on Tua after one preseason drive.

Yeah plus it’s preseason
that’s why WTF
Campbell playing hard tonight
Chop with TFL -5
CHOP!
Kamara sighting
bend but don’t break D
felt like a pretty good first half. Lot of young guys getting involved
Brooks sighting for long 3-1 run
The dropoff from Tua to Skylar is extraordinary. It’s the difference between day and night.
Brooks is down…
Skylar sucks. He’s not even a shadow of who he was in replacing Tua in ’22.
DUCK!
EZ-E showing out tonight. I’m happy for him and I hope he can stay healthy.
^
Mike White looking good ‘night… albeit against 3rd teamers… but along with 3rd teamers. He and EZ-E seem to have that chemistry.
Fuck me… and it all fell apart just now.
Pat Paul with the whiff, Mike White with the avoidable sack, and Jason Sanders misses the FG.
Cam Smith limping off the field… SMH
Mike White sucks
Both Thompson and White are slow with their reads. I know it’s 2nd and 3rd team but this is always what I see.
no pocket presence for White and no accuracy for Skylar
I’d cut them both
is someone injured on every other play?
Both teams got good work in.
Our D scheme is legit, we shouldn’t be able to win a PS game with Skylar and White playing all but 1 series
@schadjoe
Mike McDaniel not aware at moment of major injury Chris Brooks, River Cracraft, Cam Smith All went out
Tua was obviously good but that leads to a question. What horrible dirt does Mikey and Skylar have on McD to keep their jobs? They are the rare players who look worse the longer they’ve played in the NFL. I’m only kinda kidding. I can’t think of a worse backup situation but I’m sure there is one.
These guys know the system so if Tua goes out in a game these guys will fare much better with our starters than without you would at least imagine and there’s always somebody available or on the street.
I don’t want Tannesack my heart couldn’t take it.
Boo lol
Our IOL did not do well run blocking last night. They didn’t move anyone. Take away the big Brooks run and the average was terrible.
Other than running game, that first drive was nice. Especially for Tua without Tyreek, Waddle and OBJ.
I noticed ILB Long got injured. Hope it is minor.
@OmarKelly
“They did their best with what they had,” Dolphins QB Tua Tagovailoa on his backups. “We couldn’t run the ball so they did their best with what they had.”
watching the game this morning. (was at a house party last night) and I am loving the use of Achane in the passing game. Especially lining him up in the backfield and then splitting him out wide. Preseason and the plays still looked scripted
Too bad for Skylar that Berrios didn’t see that ball that hit him in the chest in the endzone
It was tipped though
I love that Kohou looks like a legit starter when they try to stress our third DB. #4 always around the ball
^
Before the start of TC, I thought Cracraft was going to be a bubble guy. With OBJ possibly not ready by game 1, he might be our #3 and I hope so.
Cam Smith looks small and weak
Nice knock away by smith couple plays later. Ok
We only had 21 players who didn’t play last night. Much better than 40 the first week.
This Referee is hilarious. Instead of just doing the “holding” signal he’s doing it in an awkward position to flex his admittedly impressive arms. Do is flexing. LOL
after a big hit by Campbell on the punt the announcer says clear as day “ahhhhh fuck” LOL
lol
Driskell has some fucking wheels man makes our D look slow and as I type this Kamara gets a sack on him. LOL
Neal “saved” a TD but he didn’t get his head around and it should have been PI.
I don’t know. He didn’t put any hands on him.
EZE with a physical scramble to make something out of nothing. Nice
YUGE rumbling stumbling run by Chris Brooks. 59 yards!
