Ok folks, this is the final preseason contest, and this one means an awful lot for guys fighting for roster spots. We’ll see a smattering of starters, but this game is mostly about seeing which guys step up and make their case to be included in the 53 man roster. Last week I discussed the offensive roster breakdown, today I’m going to focus more on the defense. In particular, there are quite a few young defensive backs who have really impressed in both training camp and preseason games, and we can only carry so many, especially since we have so many talented veteran safeties and corners already on the roster, such as Jevon Holland, Jordan Poyer, Marcus Maye, Jalen Ramsey and Kendall Fuller, there are but a few depth spots that remain. Is it possible any of the guys that have been here are in danger, like Kader Kohou, Nik Needham, Elijah Campbell?
I think Kader Kohou is safe. I think Nik Needham, who has stepped up in the past could be in danger, because the NFL is the most “What have you done for me lately?” league around. There are some impressive guys, guys that have worked hard all camp and preseason like CB Storm Duck, CB Jason Maitre, S Patrick McMorris and CB Isaiah Johnson. FYI, only S Patrick McMorris was drafted (Rd 6 pick #198), while Duck, Maitre and Isaiah Johnson were all undrafted free agents. It may be unfair, but this game may truly have a big impact as to whether some of these guys make the roster. Of course, it’s all cumulative, so the good work they’ve done during camp and preseason games all count, but this is the last chance to make a good impression.
Last season we carried 7 cornerbacks, and 5 safeties to begin the season. Knowing how much DC Anthony Weaver likes to use his safeties, I’d imagine we carry at least 5 again. As I mentioned earlier, Jevon Holland, Jordan Poyer and Marcus Maye who was signed earlier this year are probably locks. That leaves two more spots, so Patrick McMorris, Jordan Colbert and Mark Perry will be fighting for potentially one or two spots, At CB, it’s going to be tougher. Jalen Ramsey (who may get plenty of use as a safety in certain formations), Kendall Fuller and Kader Kohou are locked. I’d say ST’s ace, and yet another player who has played very well is CB Siran Neal. Also, Cam Smith, who the Dolphins drafted in RD 2 has played well, but also has been nicked up again. He needs to play, and play well. So with 4 locks, and maybe 3-5 spots to fight for, it should be an intense battle with Cam Smith, Storm Duck, Jason Maitre, Isaiah Johnson and Ethan Bonner, who has also flashed quite a bit. Some of these guys will end up on the practice squad, but I could see a couple of these guys poached by a CB needy team.
The defensive line and linebackers is also a little muddy. The trio of Zach Sieler (LDE), Benito Jones (NT) and Calais Campbell (RDE) are the starters. This will be the starkest contrast from last season, We carried only 5 defensive linemen, but this season in Anthony Weaver’s defense, we will have a heavy rotation of players, so we’ll need to carry at least 2-3 more DL than we did last season. This is where it’s muddy, at least for me. A few guys have flashed, but we have 10 DL, and as I’ve always maintained, I like DE/LB Emmanuel Ogbah better on the D-line despite the fact he’s listed as a LB on the depth chart., so his flexibility there could cost someone a roster spot. DL Da’Shawn Hand, Neville Gallimore, Brandon Pili, Jonathan Harris, Isaiah Mack and Robert Cooper will be competing for those final spots. That means 5 guys will be competing for potentially 2-3 spots, although I have no idea exactly how many DL Weaver will actually carry, this is just guesswork.
At linebacker, with Bradley Chubb beginning the season on the PUP list, that’s one spot that someone might have for a while longer out of necessity. The starters at inside are set, David Long Jr. along with newly signed Jordyn Brooks who signed an free agent from the Seattle Seahawks are the inside tandem. On the outside, we’ll have to see what Weaver decides to do. Will we start with Jaelan Phillips who was recently removed from the PUP list, or will he just get minimal playing time and be used in obvious passing downs? Emmanuel Ogbah and Jaelan Phillips are first on the depth chart, but you’d have to think rookie Chop Robinson will see a lot of reps as well as Quinton Bell and Mo Kamara. As far as who makes the roster, it will depend on how many spots are allocated. Phillips, Ogbah, Bell and Kamara seem like locks, especially with the uncertainty of if/when Chubb returns. Duke Riley and Anthony Walker will be the two depth guys on the inside and should be on the roster. Last season, we started with only 6 LB’s, I think we have to carry at least 7, Phillips, Ogbah, Long, Brooks, Robinson, Bell and Kamara, and possibly one more.
It’s possible the depth we carry on defense affects the offense, like maybe we carry only 3 TE’s instead of 4, or 5 WR’s instead of 6. OBJ is making things difficult being unavailable, and WR Erik Ezukanma limped off the field last game. He’s a guy that needs to suit up and play well, he looked great in the last game, so impressive, but the injuries are a real issue. He flashed early last season before going on IR after just 2 games. WR River Cracraft left the game banged up after catching a beautiful touchdown pass from Tua, so his availability is up in the air, but I think unless it’s more serious, Cracraft has earned a roster spot. I think rookie Malik Washington should have a roster spot as well due to his return ability which could put veteran Braxton Berrios in danger. I hope Ezukanma is healthy enough to go and his injury doesn’t keep him out long, because he brings something no other wide receiver we have on the roster brings, tough run after catch ability and size. Yes, TE Jonnu Smith gives you that too, but more options please!
GO DOLPHINS!!!

So what am I looking for from other teams’ cutdowns to a final-53? IOL, DT, QB, and ILB.
———————–
M, I know you are probably mostly talking about vets that come available. I have only seen ILB Aaron Casey who I liked in the draft and QB Matt Corral be released so far. As much as I dig in to the draft, none of these names are ringing a bell. Still many many more to be cut.
Those 2 as far as interest for the PS.
I closely watching the Bears. No way they keep 4 QB’s. They’ve cut 14 players so far but none of the QB’s. I really would like to have QB Austin Reed for them to develop. He was an UDFA.
He’s got some talent, accurate, good pocket presence, mobility, etc.
looks good in the beauty vids for sure
he’s got a weird release, almost like he has a noodle arm
I took a few days off from being online. Any big Phins news I should know about. I know the first 5 cuts including Mike White and I’m not surprised he looked awful.
We need a vet backup QB not a development type. Skylar is a developmental player
It’s amazing that the Dolphins front office hasn’t let on to any of the players that they are getting let go, or they are wanted on the practice squad. Or, if they have it is amazing that their agents have kept quiet.
Most teams keep it close to the vest until the cut deadline comes

———
IF Tua were to go down for any length of time (God forbid), I absolutely concur with ya, Hulkster. Skyler is nowhere even close to replacing Tua.
I’d prefer a vet as well, someone who could at least lead the Offense with capability and experience.
If any team loses their starting QB for any length of time they are pretty much done. What you want is if your starter goes down for 1,2 or even 3 that your backup can give you a chance to win 1 or 2 of them. I am not sure Skylar gives you that
I had originally thought Mike White could, but he didn’t do anything since he’s been here to make me think he can now. Unless you’re going to get a legit backup who can step in and win, just leave it at Skylar, and spend money elsewhere and make us as good as we can be. In other words, don’t go out and sign another Jay Cutler
I thought the same about Mike White as well but he just looked horrible this preseason. My problem is I don’t trust Skylar to be effective for a couple of games. The problem is there is only Tannehill or Mcarron out there and not sure how I feel about that.
We can win with Skylar, if he’d just show a little consistency, he’s so fn erratic, he rolls out and can’t hit the broadside of a barn
The difference between Skylar and Tua is, there is no comparison in anticipation, quick release and accuracy.
The difference between Skylar and White is, Skylar is more mobile. They’re both erratic but Skylar is a better athlete. Mike White is a poor man’s Tom Brady. Very poor. 🤪
I don’t think we can really win with either of them, not for an extended period of time. I think the Browns caught lightning in a bottle with Flacco. I mean some backups are better than others, but we had Teddy B here who should have been a good one and he was awful. Spend the money elsewhere
@TomPelissero
Important note as teams construct their initial 53-man rosters:
NFL teams were informed that the NFLPA vetoed the revised Emergency 3rd Quarterback rule that would have allowed teams to elevate a bona fide QB from the practice squad an unlimited number of times.
So, the rule reverted to the 2023 version, which says the emergency third QB must be on the 53-man roster, not an elevation.
Meh, G Max Scharping was released by the Eagles.
Was thinking we should run some form of the Nascar D on 3rd downs, with Chop, Phillips, Kamara and Ogbah, then Chubb when he gets back, not sure we really need to though, because it would take Sieler and Calais off the field
Might work against a running QB like Lamar, not sure against Allen
You could still go with any 2 of Sieler, Calias and Ogbah at DT then take out Long who lacks in coverage and go with Brooks, Phillips, Chop and Kamara at LB. Overload one side with Phillips and Chop.
Show it, let the O call their protections and when they slide their protections that way, have Phillips or Chop drop into zone and blitz Brooks on the other side.
I hope we can stash him on the PS
at 6’5″ 247lbs he’s my prototype inline TE
@flasportsbuzz
Of the 7 Dolphins cuts that I’ve reported so far today, Gallimore is the first that comes with a financial hit for Miami. He’s due $1.79 M guaranteed.
we know of White and Fortson, who are the other 4?
RELEASED/WAIVED: QB Mike White, TE Jody Fortson, DT Robert Cooper, DT Isaiah Mack, WR Mike Harley Jr., WR Jadon Janke, CB Jason Maitre, DT Leonard Payne
DT room is almost set
That’s 8
I think Maitre has a good shot a PS
cuts
WRs Harley and Janke
IDL Cooper, Mack, Gallimore and Payne
CB Maitre
@flasportsbuzz
One of the names that the Dolphins have interest in for their practice squad. Had a 72.3 passer rating in his coverage area in preseason, which is of course very good defensively.
————-
He’s talking about Maitre
11:05 a.m.: Vikings part with Myles Gaskin
Myles Gaskin, the undrafted back who led the Dolphins in rushing in 2020 and 2021, was released by the Minnesota Vikings.
—————-
Surprising to me. He was their best RB during preseason. Too bad for him.
11:30 a.m.: Miami Dolphins may sign QB3; who’s available?
The Patriots released former fourth-round pick Bailey Zappe, who went 4-4 as a starter for the Patriots. He completed 127 of 212 passes (63.2 percent) for 2,053 yards, 11 TDs and 12 INTs for a passer rating of 78.5.
Add Burton to list
Dolphins roster cuts tracker 2024
RELEASED/WAIVED: QB Mike White, TE Jody Fortson, DT Robert Cooper, DT Isaiah Mack, WR Mike Harley Jr., WR Jadon Janke, CB Jason Maitre, DT Leonard Payne, WR Ja’Quan Burton, DT Neville Gallimore.
Bolton cut also
Bolton cut means they probably keep Tindall.
WR Burton, I think they liked, but he had a few drops and missed blocks. PS maybe
Never mind that was WR McGowan I was think of, not Burton.
Now WR McGowan released. lol Again, I think he comes back to PS.
Down to 8 WR’s
But that includes injured OBJ and Cracraft
OG Matthew Jones cut
@flasportsbuzz
Jones allowed no sacks or pressures in 73 pass blocking chances in preseason, per PFF… PFF rated Lester Cotton and Jones as Miami’s 2 best pass blocking offensive linemen in preseason
CG Chasen Hines cut
OG
Interesting:
Usage of 3-WR sets this preseason: 99% – Los Angeles Rams, 94% – Atlanta Falcons, 83% – Tampa Bay Buccaneers, 82% – Indianapolis Colts, 81% – Las Vegas Raiders, 79% – Washington Commanders, 76% – Cincinnati Bengals, 75% – Tennessee Titans, 74% – Seattle Seahawks, 70% – Cleveland Browns, 68% – Jacksonville Jaguars
New England Patriots 65%
Buffalo Bills 64%
New York Jets 64%
Miami Dolphins 42%
49er’s and Saints Fewest at 37%
Left at ILB we have Long, Brooks, Walker, Riley and Tindall. One more cut???
Oops, they haven’t cut late addition to the roster LB Jackson yet. I know nothing about him.
IOL is down to 6; Aaron Brewer, Lester Cotton, Jack Driscoll, Liam Eichenberg, Robert Jones, Andrew Meyer.
They may be done there if they keep 10 OL.
So far today that I can find.
Gallimore is a surprise to me
Same here, surprise on Gallimore. He will end up on another teams 53, IMO.
I’m surprised Gallimore was cut. He looked very active to me.
Bears have cut QB Brett Rypien. That means they are probably keeping Austin Reed, dammit.
Jaguars roster cuts: QB C.J. Beathard released
Panther’s released WR Terrace Marshall Jr. He will get scooped up.
Lions released QB Nate Sudfeld.
Needham was also cut.
Just saw that. New DC, so not surprised.
Omar hits the nail on the head about the GM malpractice in Miami

crap, too bad for Needham. He’s been sticking around for years now.
I know. I was just thinking/wondering who was going to be the backup for Kohou now that Needham and Maitre are both gone. They were #’s 2 and 3 on the depth chart at NB with no others listed there.
From Dave Hyde at the Sun Sentinel
MIAMI GARDENS — When Tua Tagovailoa was asked about his interior offensive line Monday and shrugged and said, “Well, brutha, I get the ball out fast, so I’m confident with anybody we got up there, I’ll tell you that. I’m confident with anybody we get out there” — when he said this mouthful, it was the latest sign of his latest step this summer.
He’s found his voice.
He’s decided to use it, too.
The Miami Dolphins quarterback sounds more confident, more candid and alternately comic and caustic in ways he hasn’t in four seasons. Why now? When running back Raheem Mostert was asked for a difference in Tagovailoa this season, any difference, he answered with a chuckle, “I mean, other than his contract …”
From his opening public moment with the $212-million contract, when he shouted at practice to fans, “Show me the money!,” it’s been a next-chapter Tagovailoa. Louder. More comfortable. Sometimes very un-NFL-quarterback-like, too.
It’s not just the manner he ripped former coach Brian Flores’ style on Dan Le Batard’s radio show, saying, “If you woke up every morning, and I told you, ‘You suck at what you did,’ that, ‘you don’t belong doing what you do,’ that, ‘You shouldn’t be here, this guy should be here,’ that you haven’t earned this.’ ‘’
That didn’t define this new Tua. It revealed him. Just as a dozen, smaller moments have this summer. There was the, “It’s our team — not Mike’s team,’’ comment about the players running the Dolphins, not the coach. Has any NFL quarterback said that?
There was his comment that he tried to force-feed Tyreek Hill last year so the receiver got his stated 2,000 yards. Honest. Interesting. And against the traditional idea that individual goals are important only when they fold into winning.
In his second year, when four receivers (Devante Parker, Will Fuller …) didn’t practice in training camp, Tagovailoa said it wouldn’t affect their ability to work together in games. Now, comfortably in charge, he’s repeated a few times that if Odell Beckham Jr. doesn’t get to practice, he can’t trust the veteran receiver in games.
“For me, it’s very important,’’ he said of working with Beckham Jr. “Off the field, I’ve been able to hang out with him a good amount of times — cool dude, 100 percent. But does our relationship translate on the field? I couldn’t tell you, because I haven’t gotten reps with him and that’s just the honest truth.”
There’s always been flashes of this Tua, from saying, “We’re not afraid to talk about Super Bowl” to the so-called, “Salty Tua,” angry at ESPN’s Ryan Clark for body-shaming him. But there’s a steady stream of his thoughts coming now in ways that can sound just as unorthodox in his position as coach Mike McDaniel sounds in his.
Take his Flores comments on the edge of the season. How many quarterbacks start a firestorm like this on the edge of a season? Isn’t it the definition of the old-school “distraction?”
Or take his stated indifference to his starting center and guards. That was unique. Quarterbacks typically throw roses at their linemen. Tua got rid of the ball either fastest (NFL Stats) or second-fastest (Warren Sharp Analytics) in the league last year in an offense that uses the team’s speed.
But this offense didn’t work against the better teams. The Dolphins averaged 16.1 points and went 1-6 against playoff teams. And their short-yardage offense had such trouble, couldn’t they use more muscle up front? Wouldn’t that be an offseason improvement?
The normal NFL quarterback way is to speak in clichés and well-trodden phrases. Dan Marino said little in his Dolphins days. Remember vanilla Tom Brady in New England? Now he’s unleashed in a Vegas-roast and Fox-TV comments.
Tagovailoa is flexing his personality. This fits into McDaniel’s belief that a player is his best when he’s allowed to be himself. Sometimes that just means saying what everyone knows but quarterbacks never state.
“This is a quarterback driven league, I 100 percent think that,’’ Tagovailoa said. “Without a good team, without a good quarterback, I don’t think you can do much in this league. Sure, you can have a good defense, but there’s really good offenses in this league. You got to put up points and you got to find ways to do that.”
He’s been empowered by McDaniel, paid by owner Steve Ross and has found his voice entering his fifth year. And what a confident voice it is. The coming question: Is this the voice of winning?
BTW, QB Beathard was with MM in SF for 3 years as a backup QB. Though, I don’t think he is any better than White.
CB Isaiah Johnson cut

More on the 20 players that I’ve confirmed have been cut by the Dolphins: https://miamiherald.com/sports/nfl/miami-dolphins/article291445810.html… If they also release 3 players added in past 10 days (expected), that would mean 5 or 6 more cuts needed (depending on what they do with Odell; options are active roster or reserve/PUP, which would sideline him 4 games)

We use a lot of different personnel groupings including 12, 21 and 22. Having Hill and Waddle allows us to do that keeping defenses honest on the back end and we also have more max blocking for both run and pass. I really like what McDaniel is doing with this offense.
