Preseason Game 3 – Dolphins @ Bucs

Ok folks, this is the final preseason contest, and this one means an awful lot for guys fighting for roster spots. We’ll see a smattering of starters, but this game is mostly about seeing which guys step up and make their case to be included in the 53 man roster. Last week I discussed the offensive roster breakdown, today I’m going to focus more on the defense. In particular, there are quite a few young defensive backs who have really impressed in both training camp and preseason games, and we can only carry so many, especially since we have so many talented veteran safeties and corners already on the roster, such as Jevon Holland, Jordan Poyer, Marcus Maye, Jalen Ramsey and Kendall Fuller, there are but a few depth spots that remain. Is it possible any of the guys that have been here are in danger, like Kader Kohou, Nik Needham, Elijah Campbell?

I think Kader Kohou is safe. I think Nik Needham, who has stepped up in the past could be in danger, because the NFL is the most “What have you done for me lately?” league around. There are some impressive guys, guys that have worked hard all camp and preseason like CB Storm Duck, CB Jason Maitre, S Patrick McMorris and CB Isaiah Johnson. FYI, only S Patrick McMorris was drafted (Rd 6 pick #198), while Duck, Maitre and Isaiah Johnson were all undrafted free agents. It may be unfair, but this game may truly have a big impact as to whether some of these guys make the roster. Of course, it’s all cumulative, so the good work they’ve done during camp and preseason games all count, but this is the last chance to make a good impression.

Last season we carried 7 cornerbacks, and 5 safeties to begin the season. Knowing how much DC Anthony Weaver likes to use his safeties, I’d imagine we carry at least 5 again. As I mentioned earlier, Jevon Holland, Jordan Poyer and Marcus Maye who was signed earlier this year are probably locks. That leaves two more spots, so Patrick McMorris, Jordan Colbert and Mark Perry will be fighting for potentially one or two spots, At CB, it’s going to be tougher. Jalen Ramsey (who may get plenty of use as a safety in certain formations), Kendall Fuller and Kader Kohou are locked. I’d say ST’s ace, and yet another player who has played very well is CB Siran Neal. Also, Cam Smith, who the Dolphins drafted in RD 2 has played well, but also has been nicked up again. He needs to play, and play well. So with 4 locks, and maybe 3-5 spots to fight for, it should be an intense battle with Cam Smith, Storm Duck, Jason Maitre, Isaiah Johnson and Ethan Bonner, who has also flashed quite a bit. Some of these guys will end up on the practice squad, but I could see a couple of these guys poached by a CB needy team.

The defensive line and linebackers is also a little muddy. The trio of Zach Sieler (LDE), Benito Jones (NT) and Calais Campbell (RDE) are the starters. This will be the starkest contrast from last season, We carried only 5 defensive linemen, but this season in Anthony Weaver’s defense, we will have a heavy rotation of players, so we’ll need to carry at least 2-3 more DL than we did last season. This is where it’s muddy, at least for me. A few guys have flashed, but we have 10 DL, and as I’ve always maintained, I like DE/LB Emmanuel Ogbah better on the D-line despite the fact he’s listed as a LB on the depth chart., so his flexibility there could cost someone a roster spot. DL Da’Shawn Hand, Neville Gallimore, Brandon Pili, Jonathan Harris, Isaiah Mack and Robert Cooper will be competing for those final spots. That means 5 guys will be competing for potentially 2-3 spots, although I have no idea exactly how many DL Weaver will actually carry, this is just guesswork.

At linebacker, with Bradley Chubb beginning the season on the PUP list, that’s one spot that someone might have for a while longer out of necessity. The starters at inside are set, David Long Jr. along with newly signed Jordyn Brooks who signed an free agent from the Seattle Seahawks are the inside tandem. On the outside, we’ll have to see what Weaver decides to do. Will we start with Jaelan Phillips who was recently removed from the PUP list, or will he just get minimal playing time and be used in obvious passing downs? Emmanuel Ogbah and Jaelan Phillips are first on the depth chart, but you’d have to think rookie Chop Robinson will see a lot of reps as well as Quinton Bell and Mo Kamara. As far as who makes the roster, it will depend on how many spots are allocated. Phillips, Ogbah, Bell and Kamara seem like locks, especially with the uncertainty of if/when Chubb returns. Duke Riley and Anthony Walker will be the two depth guys on the inside and should be on the roster. Last season, we started with only 6 LB’s, I think we have to carry at least 7, Phillips, Ogbah, Long, Brooks, Robinson, Bell and Kamara, and possibly one more.

It’s possible the depth we carry on defense affects the offense, like maybe we carry only 3 TE’s instead of 4, or 5 WR’s instead of 6. OBJ is making things difficult being unavailable, and WR Erik Ezukanma limped off the field last game. He’s a guy that needs to suit up and play well, he looked great in the last game, so impressive, but the injuries are a real issue. He flashed early last season before going on IR after just 2 games. WR River Cracraft left the game banged up after catching a beautiful touchdown pass from Tua, so his availability is up in the air, but I think unless it’s more serious, Cracraft has earned a roster spot. I think rookie Malik Washington should have a roster spot as well due to his return ability which could put veteran Braxton Berrios in danger. I hope Ezukanma is healthy enough to go and his injury doesn’t keep him out long, because he brings something no other wide receiver we have on the roster brings, tough run after catch ability and size. Yes, TE Jonnu Smith gives you that too, but more options please!

New Dolphins No. 3 QB Tim Boyle has an 0-5 career record, 4 TDs, 12 picks and a 55.2 career passer rating. Because he’s on practice squad, he CANNOT be used in a game even if Tua and Skylar are both injured that day UNLESS Fins elevated him 1 of 3 maximum times before the game.

I don’t know if you guys remember but I have referred to Tim Boyle as the worst QB to play in the NFL in the past

I’m hoping his role on the practice quad is strictly to be Chop Robinson’s tackling dummy

    He’s horrible

  12. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Biggest head-scratchers of the day for me: cutting Jack Driscoll from our 53 and signing Tim Boyle to our practice squad. WTF?

  13. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I really don’t get our front office. I guess we truly believe in that age old adage ‘games are won and lost without any concern for the trenches’…

And Boyle? Are you kidding me? I understand the 3rd QB spot likely won’t play at all during the regular season, but if you’re going to carry a 3rd QB, he should be someone that can be developed or a seasoned vet that might have a little left in the tank, not a 6 year vet who makes garbage look appealing.

  14. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

We have a lot of talent on our roster, but it sure does seem the glaringly weakest areas on both sides of the ball are the lines. I just don’t see how you win in the playoffs that way.

Either Chris Grier is serious when he says he’s not worried about our deficiencies as much as the media, or he’s going to pull off a trade(s) to help us. I guess only time will tell…

I think the D-Line is the Achilles heel of our Defense at the moment. That may change in the coming days/weeks (especially after week 2 of the regular season).

Duped? Nah, I wouldn’t say duped. Underwhelmed would be more appropriate as to how I feel. Wish we could have somehow came away with DT Johnny Newton this past Draft…. I’d feel much more confident about our D-Line.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

It’s not just Grier, the coaches have a lot of say in who makes the roster. I think we fans view the OL differently than they do. We have 9 OL currently on the roster. Other than Driscoll being cut the names aren’t that surprising. They’re all guys we’re aware of.

  31. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

So far we have released Driscoll from the 53 and signed WR Dubose to the 53. Then to practice squad:

    QB Tim Boyle

    WR Erik Ezukanma

    WR D’Wayne Eskridge

    TE Hayden Rucci

    RB Anthony McFarland Jr

    OG Chasen Hines

OT Bayron Matos (I don’t think he counts toward total)

      @OmarKelly

And for the record, I laugh at Chris Grier’s insinuation this is the same thing as Miami signing Jordan Poyer. Miami plays the Bills 2 weeks and this will at the minimum force the Dolphins to change all their audible calls. At the MINIMUM.

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I’m with Omar on this. Though it happens all the time. Seems more often to us. lol

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

The Bills have video on all of it. They don’t know what the play is in real time and they still have to physically match up. I think that stuff is overrated.

      • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

No video of the new stuff they are implementing. That’s where White comes in. I don’t think it is overrated, but, yeah, hey run different stuff using the same motions so they still have to defend it.

White could tell them, if this happens, then it could be this, this or this play. Not sure that helps with the speed of the NFL.

Just Four WR on Cutdown Day; What Does That Mean?

    Posted by Chip Turner | Aug 28, 2024 | 2024

(SINCE THIS ARTICLE WAS WRITTEN, MIAMI ADDED A 5TH WR in GRANT DUBOSE:

  37. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

The calendar is about to turn to September. Everything not nailed down is becoming pumpkin-flavored, and there’s a morning crispness to the air as we race into football season. Okay, here in Florida, the morning air is still heavy, humid and smells like freshly-cut grass and , but you know what we mean. [Lol]

The roster was trimmed to 53 yesterday, and although there will be a few waiver claims and signings over the next several days, we have a pretty good idea of what the team will look like, at least for the first month of the season.

  38. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

In a move that raised a lot of eyebrows and blood pressure readings in the Miami fanbase, Miami only kept four wide receivers on cutdown day. Erik Ezukanma, an undeniably talented receiver, was cut following yet another preseason injury along with Braylon Sanders. Odell Beckham remained on PUP, and River Cracraft was placed on IR with a designation to return after four games.

  39. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

The only four WRs remaining on Miami’s roster before any free agent signings are Tyreek Hill, Jaylen Waddle, Malik Washington, and Braxton Berrios. So what does this mean?

Takeaway #1: The Miami Dolphins really like Malik Washington.

This shouldn’t be surprising. Washington has received nothing but rave reviews and opened a lot of eyes during the preseason. He was electric every time he touched the ball and proved durable during the Washington game following a pass from Mike White that nearly got him decapitated. [One reason I never liked Tannehill]

  40. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

Malik Washington has certainly lived up to his sleeper hype, and the Dolphins were enamored enough with the rookie to reward him with a roster spot.

Takeaway #2: The Dolphins Offense Might Be Cooking Up Something Special.

While they kept only four WRs, Miami also kept four TEs and five RBs. Normally, this wouldn’t mean a lot. However, a closer look at 2023 trends shows something interesting. Among RBs who ran at least 100 routes last year, the two RBs who lined up in the slot or on the boundary most often were De’Von Achane at 48.3% and Raheem Mostert at 39.3%.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I don’t see Malik playing a lot of WR the first month, don’t think they like what he’s done as a WR as much as you think, returner yes

Think we’ll see Mostert, Wright and Achane more early at WR, than we see Malik

  41. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

This year, Miami not only added a natural receiving back in Jaylen Wright but also Jonnu Smith, one of the fastest TEs in the league who can catch…but, more importantly, can also block. If you want to get excited about the potential of Jonnu Smith in Miami’s offense, watch the Washington preseason game. He caught four passes, one of which was a pretty jet sweep, and was a punishing blocker in the run game.

So, while Miami might only have four WRs, they’ll certainly have at least seven viable receivers for Week One. More importantly, they’re going to be able to show a variety of looks from 12, 22, and 21 personnel groupings.

There have long been rumblings about “positionless football” as it relates to WR, RB, and TE, and Mike McDaniel might be cooking up something special for the start of 2024 that will turn the rumbling into a roar. [The potential here excites me…lol]

  42. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

The lines on both sides of the ball are troubling to me, as well….lol

  43. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

Poor OL play against a stout D could blow up the best laid plans…imo…lol

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

True, but MM is usually ahead of the league to start the season and Hill has hinted at something special to replace the motion plays where he was full speed and running a little forward at the snap

  44. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

a stat mentioned by Kyle Crabbs yesterday that surprised me, on 3rd or 4th and 4 or less when running out of 12 personnel we converted 100% of the time in 2023

  45. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

With EZ and Dubose now available week 1 I feel better about our 2023 Achilles Heel of not being able to convert 3rd downs, when Hill and Waddle are doubled

Jonnu of course was already factored in, making it better than 2023, but having just Berrios and Malik as a 3rd WR wasn’t doing it for me

Sleek Tua is going to help too, I mean he’s already mentioned whoever is out there on the OL isn’t going to matter, because he gets it out so quick😜

if he can get it out quick on 3rd down we’ll be mostly unstoppable

  46. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I saw highlights last year of Tua having open receivers not named Hill or Waddle and still not throwing there way, but instead forcing it into double or triple coverage, he can’t continue to do that

Tua needs to mature into throwing to whoever is open, before we can take the next step

    • Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

I would think he worked on that…he needs time to reset on occasion…lol…OL and QB working as a team…imagine that

  47. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

after the cut down I wasn’t feeling it, the OBJ PUP really set me back, the 3rd down issues of 2023 were starting to cause concern again

Brady at his best always had a safety valve back wide open back on 3rd down or whenever, to pick up the easy 1st down

We have 3 better backs, than he ever had, no reason Tua can’t get the same results

2024 is all about Tua, he’s been given everything including the kitchen sink to succeed, if he can’t beat the good teams this year, then when will he be able to? Never

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Just keep in mind, the O-line that most of you said was inadequate will basically be the line right out of the gate, with the exception of possibly Aaron Brewer if he’s able to go. The same O-line that allowed us to only score 19, 14, and 7 in our last 3 games. Tua and mostly MM need to make this not an issue

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

there’s a few more players on O, other than the OL, those 5 don’t dictate everything, last I checked we had a new RB and TE, that will go a long ways to moving the chains

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Of course they don’t dictate everything, but they were fat #2 on the big excuse list right behind the defensive injuries.

      • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

  48. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

When they resign LS Ferguson, it will have to be to the active roster. Unless they drop a vet from the PS and sign him there to activate him later.

Same for Driscoll. If he clears waivers, we would have to drop one of the vets from the PS to put him there.

  60. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

We have yet to even see the starting OL. We won’t see our best defensive front for a while because of injuries. I don’t really know what we’ll look like at start of the season because there is nothing to go by so far this year. We haven’t seen full strength.

    • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

who would you rather have a healthy Williams at C or Brewer? Robert Hunt or (insert any G on the roster)?

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

We’re past that and I see the reason we signed Brewer. Hunt was way over paid.

      • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

I realize that. I’m not saying Hunt wasn’t WAY overpaid. My point is that the talent on the OL is not as good as it was last year. That’s a fact.

  61. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

the idea that we are going to miraculously become healthy and EVER be at “Full strength” is laughable. Some will come back, but we will lose others almost immediately. The whole “if healthy” qualification is mute. We will never be 100% healthy. That we have glaring weak areas going into the season with MEDIOCRE starters to begin with is what is concerning. (mediocre is VERY kind for some of these guys.)

  62. Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

    Tim,

Grier does not speak about it in detail. He throws around terms like “flexible” “can play inside , coaches have them ready”. It’s all coach speak .

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Okay it was an article I came across and posted it. GMs and coaches view things differently than the media and fans. They see every rep. Continuity is a big deal.

  63. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

We just got a new washer/dryer, and when I say washer/dryer, I mean it’s one machine, you throw your clothes in, set it, and it washes, then dries your clothes.

It gets better- the machine doesn’t need to be vented because it uses heat pump technology. This thing is badass. Literally, the only downside is it takes quite a bit longer to dry your clothes because it uses a heat pump (I’m talking twice the time of a standard dryer). But even with the extended dry time, it uses about half the energy of a standard energy star washer and dryer. And honestly, the longer dry times make it really gentle on clothing.

It also has AI technology that spins the drum, senses how big the load is, and uses the appropriate amount of water. I checked mid cycle, there isn’t a bunch of water sloshing around in there, the clothes are sopping wet, but there is way less water in the drum than any washer I’ve ever seen.

These things have been out for about a year now, I had no idea they even existed. We’ve had ours for a couple of weeks, and it’s amazing. I love the future.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

2nd downside is you can only have one load going at a time, although the capacity is huge and since it’s a front loader it is an excellent washer even when fully loaded.

that’s incredible. I’ve heard of those.

    • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

So it doesn’t “Exhaust” is there a lint trap?

Doesn’t it take twice as long to begin with because you can run the washer while running the dryer? Inquiring minds want to know. ( I”m pretty sure the previous owner of my place just vented the dryer vent up into the joist space in my vaulted ceilings. I cant find the outlet and I get a lot of dust that smells like sweet tarts. (or dryer sheet smell?) LOL

No vented lint would interest me.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Yep, not vented to the outside.

It has a double lint trap system. There is a sort of internal one you clean out every month or so depending on how often you use it obviously, it’s washable. And there is a fine lint trap on the top of the machine you clean out every time you use it. We’ve run probably 8 or 10 loads in it and the system works smoothly. The machine even reminds you to clean the trap 1st.

You can also just run a wash cycle or dry cycle. It has a steam option so you can de-wrinkle after the dry cycle (no more throwing ice cubes into the dryer for me). The thing even supposedly a secret blowjob function, but my wife hid the instruction manual, so I haven’t figured out how that works yet.

Interested to see our first injury report next week; Hill, Waddle, Conner, Brewer, Phillips, Walker, Poyer, Holland, Ramsey, Benito Jones.

That’s 4 possibly 5 starters on defense and 3 starters on offense dinged up heading in to week 1. Though I counted Phillips who is not dinged up but will be limited.

If no Brewer game 1 and the starting OL is Armstead, Jones, Eich, Cotton and Jackson, we will have no backup OG on the active roster. Only backup OL will be OT Patrick Paul, OT Kendall Lamm and rookie Center Meyer.

The only OL they have on the PS to activate is OG Chasen Hines.

    NOT good!

3 reasons why Miami Dolphins fans should be optimistic about the upcoming 2024 season

There is a lot to like about the season ahead

By Brian Miller | 6:00 AM EDT

The Miami Dolphins underwent many changes this offseason, and while some of those changes may not pan out, there is a lot to be excited about and optimistic about in this upcoming season.

Clearly, the Dolphins have to win important games, and that means beating teams they are challenging for a playoff spot. It’s an 18-week grind that begins a week from Sunday. The pieces are in place, mostly, but expectations shouldn’t be tempered.

Tua Tagovailoa will be out to prove the Dolphins didn’t make a mistake with him.

  80. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

Tua is obviously the key to the Dolphins’ 2024 season. Miami will not win many games without him behind center, and there is no magical running game that will pick up the slack, but Tua should be able to remain healthy. He has mastered a quick release that keeps him off the ground. He led the league in yardage last year, and you don’t do that if you don’t have talent. Tua has talent, and this year, he could lead the league again.

Tua is entering, for intent and purpose, his third NFL season. Yes, he played two years under Brian Flores, but those were not NFL seasons; those were nitpicking years of being kicked around. Under Mike McDaniel, the two have flourished, and now, Tua has to carry the weight of the team and a hefty new contract. One thing we learned from the months leading up to his contract extension was how much his teammates are behind him and ready to play with him. That speaks volumes for a guy that many said wasn’t a leader.

    • Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

Imo…I agree Tua has become a leader and that doesn’t mean he has to sacrifice himself to be a leader….the team will follow him into battle…lol

  81. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

The Dolphins defense is going to look incredibly different under Anthony Weaver.

The Miami Dolphins defense went under more change than anywhere else. The Dolphins have a new defensive philosophy that teaches fundamentals and physicality. Dolphins fans should be ecstatic to see where this takes the team and how the players respond.

It is a 180-degree turn from what Miami was under Vic Fangio and Josh Boyer before that. It is pretty hard to make the Boyer years look good, but Fangio managed to find a way. Miami’s defense wasn’t bad in 2023 despite the Fangio system. This year, it will be a lot different. If Weaver can get the Dolphins to play like the Ravens, we can expect to see more of the Dolphins’ defensive unit dictating games instead of being told how to play.

  82. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

This could be the best year for the Dolphins at tight end.

The Dolphins’ addition of Jonnu Smith may turn out to be the best move the franchise made this offseason. He can run routes off the TE inline position and from the slot. He can take the ball out of the backfield and play more of a Deebo Samuel role. Smith may not be as good as he once was, but he is the best pure TE the Dolphins have had in a long while. He can block and catch, and unlike Mike Gesicki, he can get yards after the catch.

Julian Hill made many mental errors last year, but his mistakes are correctible. He is a big target tight end who can use his body well in coverage. He will need to. This year, he should make a big jump forward, and that is good news for the Dolphins, who may finally have the personnel to run tight ends along with their wide receivers

    ____________

To be crude…lol…a wet dream. If the Dolphins can unlock this position from a point of weakness to a weapon, I will have survived on this planet way too long…lol

Yeah, that’s why teams can’t tackle and why there are so many slow starts and so many “soft tissue” injuries early in the season. These guys are not in football shape.

A couple of former players were talking about exactly that the other day on ESPN (I forget which show) they were going on and on about players not being ready for the season because the CBA has (and I am not quoting but paraphrasing here) “Pussyfied” training camps. It seems only Andy Reed skirts close to breaking the rules with his full contact practices. (according to the explayers who were talking about it.)

  88. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

This may have been posted while I was flying yesterday, but it’s great news so I will post it anyway.

MIAMI GARDENS — Miami Dolphins linebacker Jaelan Phillips offered his most upbeat prognosis yet Thursday, saying he no longer feels like he’s coming off a torn Achilles and isn’t viewing this as a season with lowered personal expectations.

“I don’t see this as a ‘get-back’ year,” Phillips said. “I don’t see this as like getting my toe in the water. Like I’m coming, guns blazing.”

Phillips was injured in the Black Friday game against the New York Jets in the Meadowlands. The Dolphins activated him off the physically unable to perform list Aug. 12. He said he has experienced steady improvement over the past six weeks.

“Every time I would just start to add load and do new things, I would just kind of surprise myself with how my Achilles didn’t get sore,” he said.

Critically for his style of play as an edge rusher, Phillips said, “Pushing off of it, there’s no rebound, there’s no weakness. It’s just explosive. It’s feeling great. So yeah, I just feel very grateful and blessed.”

Although he described the Achilles as “rock solid,” Phillips admitted he was uncertain what his recovery would be like, given his reliance on pushing off with the Achilles.

“When I first got hurt, I didn’t really know what to think,” he said. “I didn’t know what it was going to be like coming back. I heard a lot of people mention to me about confidence things and having like a mental block almost. But I haven’t had that issue at all. I’m fully confident and I don’t even feel hurt, honestly, so far.”

Medical science has come so far it is incredible! Also, being a freak specimen of an athlete doesn’t hurt either!

  89. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Travis Hunter is going to be the real deal in the NFL.

Question is, will he play WR or CB or both? He is a stud at both positions and considered a top 10 pick at either. Crazy!

  90. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Talking about Colorado WR’s, Jimmy Horn Jr would make a nice replacement in the slot for OBJ next year from the slot. He can line up either inside or out with his 4.38 speed.

He should be available in the 4th (day 3) due to his frame. What I like about him is he is a true technician with his route running. Runs a full route tree. Always creates separation though out of the slot mostly so he don’t see much press coverage.

Makes sense. I remember our coach having us do “Bull in the Ring” drills in the summer to toughen us up before getting into real practice. We would get all banged up and bruised before starting any other drills. We had to go through the rest of practice playing through pain.

I hated it but when it came to game time, we knew how to play through it.
