2024 Season – Game 4 – Titans @ Dolphins

Wow, Monday Night Football! What a marquis matchup we have here! The 0-3 Tennessee Titans come in to Miami to Hard Rock Stadium to face off against the last place 1-2 Miami Dolphins! It certainly looks bad, this is not what the NFL wants of course, but maybe it is. Maybe this is the game that catapults a team that looked like they were ruined to a successful season, while the other one falls further into a hole extremely difficult to climb out of. Neither team has played well, but while the expectations for the Tennessee Titans were modest, expected to be a sub .500 club (6-11, 7-10), the Dolphins, depending on what site you visited, were expected to compete for the AFC East crown with the Jets and Bills with 10-7 or 11-6 record. Every week is a must win the NFL, but if the Dolphins are truly to be a playoff contender, this win carries an awful lot of weight. It’s not a division game, but it is a conference game, and the Dolphins are 1-1 against the AFC with a W against the Jags, and a loss against the Bills.

In my last article I told you that things will shift, and I do still believe that. While I also feel we fell short of building the trenches properly, this team has far too much talent at the skill positions to be scoring only 11.0 points per game. Of course, the catalyst, QB Tua Tagovailoa is OUT, and will remain OUT until at least Week 8, but Tyreek Hill, Jaylen Waddle, De’Von Achane, Jonnu Smith, Jaylen Wright and Raheem Mostert (if healthy), should be enough to score more than 11 points, regardless of who is playing QB. So who will be the QB against the Titans for the Dolphins? Skylar Thompson is injured, and by the Gods, he was putrid after having a long week from Friday to the following Sunday, in addition to having 2 years to fully digest this offense. He looked lost out there, confused, hesitant, unsure, inaccurate, indecisive, and just so disappointing. He can no longer be considered the backup or have any future aspirations of being the starting QB of this team. That leaves Tim Boyle, who at the very least looked like an NFL QB that belonged on the field, or Tyler Huntley who has had little time to digest the playbook after being signed from the Baltimore Ravens practice squad on 9/17. Huntley is a better athlete and his legs give him a dual threat, although he’s no Lamar Jackson. No matter who starts on Monday Night Football, they have to threaten the defense down the field.

There are quite a few players listed as questionable for this MNF matchup.

CB Kendall Fuller (concussion)

OT Terron Armstead (concussion)

WR Malik Washington (quad)

RB Raheem Mostert (chest)

CB Siran Neal (?)

FB Alec Ingold (?)

QB Skylar Thompson (ribs)

LB David Long (hamstring)

OT Kendall Lamm played well enough in T-Stead’s place, but it would sure be nice to see the rookie Patrick Paul get some reps so we know that’s one less spot we have to draft for next season. We spent a 4th RD pick on RB Jaylen Wright (5’10 210) from Tennessee, acquired by trading our 2025 3rd RD pick. Is it possible we can make that trade look good by actually using the guy? 7 carries in 3 games, while we wear out 5’9 190 LB RB De’Von Achane with 43 carries for 150 yards (3.5 YPC), along with 17 receptions for 173 yards. 60 touches in 3 games seems like a lot for smallish back who had lots of trouble staying on the field last season, missing 6 games. When he was used sparingly, 103 carries for the season, he averaged over 7.8 YPC. That’s a huge difference. I understand Raheem Mostert is OUT, but isn’t that why you drafted Jaylen Wright in the first place? All over the NFL I see rookie RB’s tearing it up, and YES, I’m aware Achane did just that last season, but we also saw what happened when you use him a lot, he breaks down. Let’s get Jaylen Wright some more work, shall we?

The defense has had its ups and downs. They spotted Seattle 17 first quarter points before buckling down. For the most part, the defense feeds off the offense, and if that’s the case, the defense must be starving, because this offense has sucked since the first snap of the season. Despite moving the ball against Jacksonville, we scored only a TD in the first half, and then in the second half, just a TD and 2 FG’s, one as time expired for the W. Against the Bills, with Tua as the QB, we scored 10 first half points, but also turned the ball over 3 times, (3 INT’s). Against Seattle, it was worse, much worse. We managed only a FG in Seattle, where instead of the 12th man, it seemed like 12 million. We need to score some points against the Titans on MNF, it’s as simple as that. The Titans defense is right around our defense, a couple of notches worse, allowing 26 PPG, while our defense is at 24 PPG.

Head Coach Mike McDaniel has uncharacteristically taken a lot of heat early on in this season. Who could have thought it possible thought after scoring 496 points (29.2 PPG) that fans would be calling for Mike McDaniel’s head after 3 games? I think it’s crazy myself, it’s just too early, and as we all know painfully well Dolphins fans, it ain’t how you start, it’s how you finish! How many seasons have we gone through that? While Rock is still 100% correct that all the games count, if we finish strong and end up 10-7, or 11-6, and we’re playing well, not a soul will care about our 1-2 start. It’s time to set things right, and there is no question there is a lot of pressure on this team to perform better. Not sure if Skylar Thompson will be healthy enough to suit up as the 2nd or 3rd QB, I’d prefer someone lose his uniform. In any case, the way the NFL has been churning through QB’s, we might need 3 on Monday night. I would also tend to think whomever starts will not have a long leash if the offense is stagnant. Whether it’s QB Tyler Huntley or QB Tim Boyle, they’re going to have to earn the right to stay on the field.

Have I brought up the fact that we gave both of our top WR’S really nice extensions before the season started? YEAH! We gave Tyreek Hill a 3YR/$90M extension, and Jaylen Waddle got a 3 YR/$84.75M extension! Hey, did I mention what type of production we’ve received from these 2 players?

Tyreek Hill – 3 games – 7 catches, 130 yards, 1 TD / 1 rush, 12 yards

Jaylen Waddle – 3 games – 13 receptions, 176 yards, 0 TD’s /. 2 rushes, 7 yards

That’s right folks, last season, these were stats for 1 game, and not necessarily a great game either. It’s painful, and yes, it is an indictment on Mike McDaniel at just how ineffective this offense has been. He has to turn it around, no matter who the QB is. We can’t continue to be this poor, and still utter the phrase “offensive genius”. I for one am not carrying a pitchfork ready to storm Miami Gardens FL and try to get our Head Coach fired. I mentioned last week that the Baltimore Ravens are 1-2 as well, and QB Lamar Jackson has played all 3 games. Granted, the Ravens have scored 71 points, more palatable than our 33. The LA Rams are also 1-2, and they were supposed to also be a contender. What I’m saying is it’s still early, we win this game, even win ugly, and then we move on to the next one, but we have to come away with the “W” at home, knowing well that our schedule just gets more difficult when we come back from the BYE, whether Tua is our QB at that juncture or not. My feeling is that he will be, no one should be making this decision other than #1, QB Tua, along with his wife and family. In spite of that, the optics can never be good for this team, especially if he goes down again.

Not to say “I told you so”, but I did. His health will be our problem until he miraculously gets past them or he decides to retire. Due to the money in the contract, unless he gets hurt again, or even whether he doesn’t play another down for us this season, the future cap ramifications will haunt us unless he retires. The public relations nightmare, that we’re throwing him out to the slaughter will also be there as long as he’s on this team. It’s not a pretty picture for us, or him for that matter. I believe, ultimately the blame will be on the Miami Dolphins if Tua plays again and is concussed again. I hope for both his sake and the team’s sake that after that hit, he does the prudent thing for the rest of his life and retires, and enjoys his life with his family. Let’s not forget he’s already earned $73M. That’s a helluva lot more than any of us stiffs who root for him, and I think he might be able to just scrape by if he never plays again, but once again, that’s up to Tua.

3 Dolphins to blame for blowout loss to Titans on Monday Night Football

How do you choose just three?

By Brian Miller | 6:00 AM EDT

The Tennessee Titans have not won a football game since last season when they beat the Miami Dolphins at Hard Rock Stadium. On Monday night, they got their second win and first of the 2024 season.

Miami has one victory and, right now, can expect to lose its next two games before Week 8, when Tua Tagovailoa could return. Monday night was ugly. It made the Week 3 game in Seattle look like a playoff fight.

While Tyler Huntley gave no one a reason to believe he is the right quarterback for the Dolphins right now, he clearly wasn’t the entire problem. The Dolphins were a mess, but could you pinpoint three players that stood out as a problem?

Dolphins to blame for embarrassing loss to Titans in Week 4

    Tyreek Hill

Tyreek Hill didn’t lose the game for the Dolphins, but he didn’t do anything to win it either or put the Dolphins in a position to win it. Instead, he dropped a couple of passes and his lack of urgency on a backward pass led to a recorded fumble for Huntley.

Hill should have made the catch. He has made tougher catches throughout his career, but where he really failed was his nonchalant effort to recover the ball. In fact, he didn’t try to at all. Hill has to do better and can’t be simply an uphill flyer for deep passes.

Clearly, Hill is frustrated with his lack of use, but it is players like him who need to find a way to step up and lead rather than throw a fit on the sideline. It was warranted, but he needs to look in the mirror, too.

    Offensive line

Rookie Patrick Paul got his first start. He did well, but the line play is getting worse without the benefit of Tua’s fast release. They are being exposed for what they are—a soft unit that is only asked to do anything for a second or two. That’s all they are capable of.

Chris Grier’s declaration about the line not being a problem is nothing more than egg on his face at this point, and they are all to blame. The line can’t pass protect and they can’t run block consistently. Huntley is a mobile quarterback, but on Monday, the line couldn’t give him room to breathe.

It isn’t going to get any easier in the coming weeks, and the Dolphins don’t have any options that can help them.

    Mike McDaniel

We can’t leave Mike McDaniel off this list. The Dolphins were not prepared to play football for the fourth week in a row. McDaniel is buddy-buddy with his players and wants to be their friend, but if this continues, he will be lucky to have a job.

For the fourth week in a row, McDaniel has been out-coached in every facet of the game, and his nuances will wear thin with players. Monday proved again that McDaniel is over his head and doesn’t know what to do without Tagovailoa.

Fans watched as more backups led their teams to victories in Week 4 while the Dolphins couldn’t beat a winless team at home. That’s on McDaniel.

I don’t get the “genius” playcalling one bit…flummoxed…lol

  21. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

LGM – Fuck the Dolphins! They are unwatchable. Tua needs to retire, and I think it might be time for Grier to get the boot as well. I don’t want him making those prime picks in the top 5 next season. Maybe MM is in over his head, maybe he needs to go too, it seems like he has no answers. Don’t forget Tua had 3 INT’s before getting injured in that Bills game.

My accounting manager who is attempting a Rim to Rim to Rim run this weekend invited me to her daughter’s volleyball game tonight – Westlake (us) v bitter rival Lake Travis.

It should be so much more fun than last night’s shitshow…lol

  23. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    M13,

I told you last year that Hunt was one of the reasons Jackson was playing better. That toughness rubs off. It sets a tone. So yeah…Jackson is definitely missing Hunt. We could’ve had a right side similar to what the Titans are building on their left side with Latham and Skoronski. But no….we needed 8 small and fast WRs.

  24. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — If the new ideas aren’t working, it’s time to bring back some old ones.

Page 1 of the Mike Shanahan playbook was the bootleg, when the offense fakes an outside zone run one way, and the quarterback rolls back the other, often finding wide-open receivers because the opposing defense over-commits to stop the run.

If there was ever a time for McDaniel to bring that largely abandoned concept back, it was Monday with mobile QB Snoop Huntley under center. But McDaniel didn’t use it.

  29. New Age's avatar New Age says:

Having no power was a a blessing last night it seems. Getting absolutely crushed by a terrible Titans team should remove most of the remaining excuses by fanatics. We are the worst team in the NFL and Tua coming back isn’t going to fix that for people who somehow already forgot the Bills game. Time to start over and have different people making decisions. McD is a terrible HC. I agree with old old dolfan that it’s probably not likely with an owner who is similar to Jerrah in his desire to interfere in decision making. Either way, this iteration is terrible and far worse than the Flores version as much as I dislike Flores.

Fans are already making the excuse we need more offensive firepower than the best paid Wr, 11th best paid, 2 super fast RBs, good TEs, and everything else McD wanted and got. No OL though as we watched the Ravens piledrive through the Bills. Whats the excuses today? Need a 3rd top 20 WR?

  30. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I couldn’t watch the whole thing

  31. New Age's avatar New Age says:

    ER,

It may suck as a fan but it feels good to be right doesn’t it? McD and this team gave us tons of warning last year as the only winning team that lost to us was the always wildly inconsistent Cowboys. That’s before Grier decided to gut the DL and OL to pay his already highly compensated speed players even more money. Has that ever worked??! I’m done with this version of shit. Give me some hope by moving on to at least a different color s as no texture of shit.

  32. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

So, I woke up this morning and didn’t even think about the game. I heard on the radio just before walking into the office that we got blown out. I watched a lot of the 1st half (I thought) but like I would watch a Denver game. I had no emotional investment. I changed the channel a little before the half I guess and forgot to go back and check. Now, I had already assumed they would lose, but the D seemed to be working pretty hard so I thought it would be closer.

I kind of like not caring anymore. At least I’m not angry and don’t feel sick after a game.

I almost said “sorry to tell you” but that’s a lie. I TOLD YOU. Grief has fucked this team and he will still be fucking this team years from now when he is a regional scout for the Kentucky Rough Riders. Over 100M in dead cap in 07,08 & 09. The next GM is going to be PISSED OFF he is paying 20% of the cap for players that have been gone off the team for YEARS.

It’s the perfect time to quit being a Dolphins fan because they suck and will continue to suck for years because of Griefs ineptitude and incompetence.

  33. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Like I said last night, MAYBE Ross has had the talk with McDanial about tanking but doing it the right way (ALL IN) but I doubt that because who in their right mind would throw away 100’s of MILLIONS on guys in a “window of opportunity” only to tank the same year? That said, I hope they lose the rest of the games this year and trade Tyreek and Ramsey this off-season (they will still have to carry the stupid cap hits because of void years, but maybe we can get a couple of draft picks in return.

Tim – I think it’s a lot more than losing Tua. We weren’t right against JAX but pulled a win out of our ass. We were downright awful against the Bills with Tua, and no better without him. This team is just not right, we don’t look like an NFL team, we’re sloppy on offense with panties all over, Tyreek Hill looks like he doesn’t want to participate in this, and overall, Mike McDaniel is failing his team by nit figuring out ways to get this offense going. Chop Robinson looks lost. We may never see Cam Smith on the field. We whiffed on so many draft picks. I don’t want Grier picking our next QB and I’m not sure I want Mike McDaniel back either

    • New Age's avatar New Age says:

It’s hard to believe it’s all from losing Tua as the Raiders, Charlotte, Pats, Denver, Vikings, Commanders, and Packers, have won with backups or new QBs. We watched career backups win some last year as we look totally lost. The only thing that allows total incompetence to continue is defending and ignoring that incompetence. We bet on the wrong QB and all the excuses in the world won’t change that. I bet we wouldn’t have needed a subpar QB whisperer as HC if we didn’t have Tua.

Between the aftermath of the hurricane (reports out of North Carolina are heartbreaking), Iran attacking Israel, the US dock workers going on strike (supply chain is going to hell shortly), global corporations laying off thousands of workers worldwide, social distancing protocols being put into place at some businesses in America today, WW3 coming to a theatre near you, 401Ks collapsing, power failures, cell phone failures (Verizon), more killings today by illegal immigrants, more of our troops being sent to the Middle East, etc, etc… and October 1st isn’t even over yet.

This list is just off the top of my head and I’m sure there are other stories out there I’ve overlooked.

    ————–

I DO recall you having said as much last year, but not until ya just reminded me. YES, I do believe you were and ARE 100% correct, bud.

Excellent call on your part. Now… what to do about it? I think we’re funked until next Draft, man… unless we pull off a trade for a stud RG before the deadline.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Of course, if we don’t pull said trade off ASAP, the season will be too far gone to even consider parting with Draft capital. I think we’re funked until the ’25 Draft.

I am about out of patience with Jackson. He’s a vet now, and he shouldn’t need anybody to bring out his best. He’s seen it. He’s done it. This kind of thing suggests a lack of discipline. A lack of individual discipline and coaching discipline. He’s not playing to his potential. He should be one of those vets who’s stepping up and leading right now. Soft teams don’t hold themselves or each other accountable.

    2. MIAMI DOLPHINS: QB JALEN MILROE, ALABAMA

Milroe is having a fantastic season, highlighted by a massive win against Georgia, where he earned an 89.5 passing grade. He also posted an impressive 74.2 passing grade under pressure in the contest, significantly improving on one of his struggles last season.

So far, he has a 4.2% big-time throw percentage and just a 0.9% turnover-worthy play percentage. Combine that with his dual-threat rushing ability, and he has the potential to be a QB1-caliber player.

Milroe is an interesting prospect, but he has much to learn to play QB in the NFL. He doesn’t read defenses well pre-snap. He stares down his targets. He is a project, IMO. I think it really depends on how this season turns out. Even with a decent turn around, he will have a top 3 hottest seat next year and will need a playoff win to survive. Let’s really dig to this.

Dude has no real pedigree and sounds like a smoked out retard. Run game coordinator is all he’s done? WTF LMAO?!! We have the most penalties in the NFL and looked like an undisciplined mess even during our win. Dave Hyde wrote an article about how little work was done this offseason to prep for the season. The team looks like it doesn’t even do a pregame walkthrough much less hardcore prep each week. No one seems to know how to do shit even though they’ve played their entire lives.

Now throw in zero leadership. Coach wise, player wise, nowhere. The high paid vets sit around fucking off and that’s on coaching. Add in this team being the softest in the NFL and why in the fuck would he be safe? Because he Uhh, ummm, yeahs with the best of them? Ross wants a ring. No one will ever get a ring on a McD led team. The leash is tightening as I speak. Dude better get something going and he better hope Tua suddenly plays lights out. Because his job depends on it this year. Ross gives zero shits about wasting money. Zero.

I dont think any in season firings will happen. Worst case scenario is they win a few games at the end of the year…..now they think they figured it out and keep him.

This team has been rebuilding forever. They peaked last 2 years and now it’s not sustainable having one of the oldest teams and an offensive system predicated on throwing the ball in 1 second. Who would think cover 2 defense could cripple an entire offense? Well, if you can’t run up the middle or pass protect at least 2-3 seconds we see what it looks like. Grier still isn’t worried about the OL.

      • New Age's avatar New Age says:

I don’t think they will either, but it really depends on if Tuia retires (which I don’t see happening), It’s 50/50 afterwards though. Honestly, Tua is a talented QB so he will get us some wins. The team is built on a concept that could do well in the NFL, but the leadership thinks they are smarter than they are. You still need guys in the trenches. It’s not revolutionary like Air Coryell but it seemed to have the right weapons and nuance to be an explosive offense that just needed an average defense to excel.

McD is in way over his head as a HC. It’s way too early if he ever gets the skills needed for that job. McD is either very lazy, a people pleasing wimp who can’t face confrontation, or maybe some of both. That just doesn’t work and he’s either unable or unwilling to adjust to counters to his gameplans. That also doesn’t work. I still can’t believe an ex-run game coordinator from the Shanahan school doesn’t run more. It blows my mind.

    ————————

That is not an understatement. This class is weak. BR has some solid dudes who do their scouting/rankings. They just did their top 30 prospects and they have just 13 players they designate as definite 1st round prospects who “could” be immediate impact players. They only list 20 players they feel could be year 1 starters.

Of course, it all depends on who drafts those players and the position. Dolphins could easily draft an OG in the top 100 and he starts because he is better than what we have.

RB’s rarely get drafted in the 1st round anymore but many start and have an immediate impact.

I mean, hell, we have an UDFA CB who started last game.

These rankings are just a tool to use.

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I mean 5 out of the 10 OL who were drafted in the 3rd round are starting as rookies for the teams who drafted them. Two of them are starting at OT, 4 of the 5 won the starting job and 1 starting due to injury.

  87. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I forgot where I was going with all this. I’ve been dealing with COVID this week so I still got some brain fog. lol

Look at the Steelers, they are 3-1 and starting 2 rookies on the OL, 2nd round pick Center Zack Frazier and 4th round pick RG Mason McCormick. They would probably be starting 3 rookies on the OL had OT Troy Fantanu not got injured and put on IR.

Steelers spent 3 of their first 5 picks on the OL and it’s paying off huge.

  89. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Going back to M’s post, the 2025 draft looks to be “devoid” of elite talent for sure. Reason being, there is no true generational talent. Though, someone could develop into that. No way of telling.

Going by the guys at BR, this draft is devoid of even top 5 talent as compared to other drafts meaning they don’t feel any of the players who may go top 5 in the 2025 would have cracked the top 5 this year.

They have no QB’s or OL in their top 5 and actually only have 1 QB and 1 OL in their top 10. The QB, Cam Ward, comes in at #6 and the only OL in the top 10 comes in at #10, OT/OG Will Campbell.

They only have 2 OL in their top 20 and 4 total in their top 30, only 3 QB in their top 30 and 3 edge.

Yeah, kind of bleak but doesn’t mean we can’t find players who could come in and start with our 1st 4 picks, especially on the IOL.

  90. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

If we continue on this pace and end up picking #2, I think you try to trade down to #5 and take whatever you can get pick wise then draft whoever is left of:

    CB/WR Travis Hunter

    DT Mason Graham

    S Malaki Starks

    CB Will Johnson

    QB Cam Ward

Again, you are probably not getting a top 5 player drafting in the top 5.

  91. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:
