2024 Season – Game 10 – Raiders @ Dolphins

The run begins! The Dolphins successfully staved off elimination by defeating the Rams in Los Angeles in their best effort of the season, 23-15. Let’s face it, and this is not hyperbole, every week now is an elimination game. At 3-6, we can probably afford 2-3 more losses, depending on how things shake out in the AFC. A 9-8 record may make it, or it might take a 10-7 mark to get in. If it’s the latter, that leaves us only one loss left, and despite the fact that we’re playing two easier marks in the Raiders and the Patriots, we have no room for error and cannot be caught looking ahead. Let’s face it, we haven’t been anything close to resembling the powerful, explosive offense we had last season in which we were averaging 29.2 PPG. It’s closer to half that at 16.3 PPG this season. WR’s Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle have been so under used, they’re basically decoys running around all game. Last season after 9 games, WR Tyreek Hill had 69 receptions for 1014 yards and 8 TD’s. This season, Tyreek Hill has 37 receptions for 462 yards and 2 TD’s. Jaylen Waddle had 40 receptions for 522 yards with 3 TD’s and he missed the Denver game outright, so only 8 games played. This season, Waddle has 31 receptions for 367 and 1 TD. No doubt Hill has the larger drop off, mostly due to Waddle not getting as much action due to the nearly historic season by his teammate WR Tyreek Hill, who was trying to have a 2000 yard receiving season.

So why have Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle been shut down this season? I wish it was easy to say it was only the games that QB Tua Tagovailoa missed, but that’s not even remotely accurate. The Dolphins have been running the ball more than we did last season, and they’ve had some success doing that. Honestly, I don’t mind us being more of a rushing offensive team, I think that when it comes down to playing against better competition in big games, and for us, that means every week, you need to control the line of scrimmage and run the ball effectively. The better teams, along with the cold weather tend to neutralize the aerial attacks, so I like that we can run the ball. Oddly enough, we faced the Rams last week and struggled to run well, but the defense was the hero of the day, led by the return of key players on the defense like DT Zach Sieler, S Jevon Holland and CB Kader Kohou. The defense was excellent, they didn’t allow one trip to the endzone, to a Rams offense loaded with all their WR’s like Puka Nacua, Cooper Kupp and their excellent RB Kyren Williams. Also keep in mind the Rams were on a 3 game win streak and were playing very well, especially after getting their two top receivers back the last couple of weeks in Cooper Kupp and Puka Nacua. The defense really did an outstanding job Sunday and carried the day.

So we got one game out of the way, and we need to keep checking them off one by one, never looking ahead any further than the game at hand. This week we host the Las Vegas Raiders who at 2-7 are nearly eliminated from the playoffs. One bright spot for the Raiders is 1st RD pick (#13) TE Brock Bowers who is having a phenomenal rookie campaign. Bowers already has 57 receptions for 580 yards and 2 TD’s. The Raiders are clearly looking to the future as they traded away WR Davante Adams who was just languishing this season and was miserable with very little production. Former Patriots WR Jakobi Meyers is having a nice season, and of course on defense, DE Maxx Crosby continues to rack up QB sacks, and has 6.5 this season. This would have been the week to see our old friend DT Christian Wilkins again, and I suppose we will see him, but he won’t be playing as he’s on IR, potentially for the entire season after a Jones fracture of his left foot. I’ll say this, 39 year old DE Calais Campbell has done his share and more to help fans get over the loss of Christian Wilkins here in Miami. Unfortunately, Calais has made it clear this is his final season, so we have some work to do!

If I told you before the season that De’Von Achane would be leading the Dolphins in rushing yards, many of us probably wouldn’t scoff at that. If I told you he’d have nearly twice the amount of rushing attempts than any other RB on the roster, 105-55, that you would probably laugh at. The guy who had so much difficulty staying on the field has become close to a workhorse back, but his YPC average has shrunk tremendously, going from an outrageous high of 7.8 yards per carry to a meh 4.4 yards per carry. I admit I find it odd that Achane is the primary back, especially with a very capable RB in rookie 4th RD pick Jaylen Wright and veteran Raheem Mostert available, although in Mostert’s case, he’s been injured occasionally. Wright however, has been healthy all along, but seldom used. Let me just get it out there, we see RB’s all over the NFL, rookies that were drafted, undrafted rookies, have success everywhere, and get tons of carries all over the NFL, but somehow in our offense, we can’t make it happen. I’m sure some will say it’s due to the over complicated offensive scheme. Let me say this, if you’re going to run an overly complicated offensive scheme, you better get better at teaching it because players get hurt all the time, and Achane already has a history in his short career, and Mostert even more so, so you better make sure Jaylen Wright understands all his responsibilities before the end of the season, because he may be the best guy standing!

So here we go, Game 2 on the MUST WIN parade of 9 games in which we practically have no room for error. We’re home, but unlike the majority of seasons, we’re struggling at home at Hard Rock Stadium and are 1-3. We have to do better, we have to win at home and on the road, but when you’re home, you should be at your best. I don’t mind being better on the road, that could work for us if somehow we earn a playoff berth, but there are no excuses at home, no crowd noise interference or cold weather. Good news is Zach Sieler is back, along with Jevon Holland and Kader Kohou. Bad news is starting CB Kendall Fuller is OUT with a concussion, his second of the season. LG Robert Jones is QUESTIONABLE, and if you didn’t know, LG Isaiah Wynn is practicing, but unlikely to be ready this week. He has been designated for return, so his 21 day window is open, but not yet determined if he will be on the roster, much like S Patrick McMorris, who by the way is in FULL participation in practice, which is also good news. If neither Isaiah Wynn or Robert Jones are able to go, OG Lester Cotton will get the nod. He had mixed results last week, more negative than positive unfortunately. We also learned earlier this week that RT Austin Jackson is done for the season, so Kendall Lamm will go at RT for now, while rookie 2nd string LT Patrick Paul sits at the ready for now. ILB David Long was released, as his replacement the last couple of games Anthony Walker has flourished. It’s surprising to cut a team captain, but results are imperative at this point, and kudos to Weaver, Grier and MM for making a tough choice. Let’s hope the LG and RT positions don’t haunt us, and we make it through for yet another elimination game vanquished!

    MikeE,

Brewer nor our guards create lanes or creases inside the guard box consistently. I do think Wright was running harder earlier in the season. Maybe he’s gotten a little gun-shy running into 300 guys. He’s a rookie, but he’ll be okay.

FINS UP!!! 🤘🤘 Poyer is average AF, and Kohou had some POOR tackle attempts. Which was surprising because early in the game he got in there on a tough hit on a run play. Got the win, scored 30 (Good call Mike!) and most importantly, I get to celebrate my last night here instead of sulking in the hotel room 😂😂 When we get Ingold back, the Running game will be back to dominant form, and life will be good!

  28. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Well, we moved up 1 spot in the WC race to #9 seed. We will stay there if the Bengals lose on the road Monday night at the Chargers. If not, back to #10 seed.

Need Falcons to beat the Broncos (#7 seed) this afternoon.

Colts remain #8 seed after beating the Jets on the road by 1 point. That sucks.

Colts are home next week vs the Lions. Then @Patriots and @Broncos.

Broncos have it much easier next two weeks @Raiders then home vs Browns.

  29. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

It looks like no help from the Falcons. Bo Nix is really coming on for the Broncos.

  30. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

  32. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Mike – honestly, too early to scoreboard watch. We have to win the next 3 games, get over .500, and then we can worry about everyone else. We don’t win these next 3, it doesn’t matter IMO

  33. Randy's avatar Randy says:

AVG is doing well, but he simply wouldn’t be having the same impact on this defense. Flores went and got him because he knew he could use him a certain way in his defense. Here, he wouldn’t be getting the same opportunities. AVG made a great choice to go play for Flores again.

Who after last year thought we would be using the word “Methodical” about the Dolphins’ O? I get the feeling teams gameplan on D based on last year’s games and Tua and the boys take what is left over. And Tua ain’t a bad game manager.

  36. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

He’s the guy when we pray together in the locker room that sits next to me every single week and a lot of guys have really, if they didn’t already appreciate it, appreciate what type of playmaker he is for us. Every opponent ends up saying that he’s probably better than they realized, and that’s good for us.”

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

if you remember my post from last week…

I said in 1984 we beat Philly on a blocked extra point to go 9 or 10 and 0, the next week I was at the game in SD, we lost our only game of the season, and said KC might lose next week, before even knowing who they we’re playing

as an aside the previous year 1983 I went to 1 UM game before moving west, it was the opener in Gainsville vs Gators, UM lost, then won the rest and the national championship

I felt like Ken does now🤪

  42. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

    Nice win, Phins!!!

Now we’d better keep winning to make the playoffs, or these wins are going to hurt us in the Draft. Last thing I want is to finish just outside of the playoffs with a late teen-something or early twenty-something pick in the first two rounds of the Draft.

Even if we were to get bounced out in the Wildcard round, at least we’ll be able to say we made the playoffs 3 years in a row… that would be a great sign! If we don’t make the playoffs, these wins are hollow victories that set us up for mediocrity.

Brewer is good when he’s moving, but he is not good at moving guys, in short yardage or handling big guys one-on-one. He never gets any push inside.

    ————

    ^THIS

I concur 100% with ya, man. And that’s no diss to Brewer as he’s been really, really good for us… it’s just a fact and probably the only short-coming to his game. Keep him moving and he’s/we’re good.

    • pieguyevan's avatar pieguyevan says:

It’s incredible how different our run game looks without Ingram. Our outside running game has been pedestrian since he’s been out, and our guards are nothing to write home about. It really is a testament to Achanes skills as an RB as he SOMEHOW makes magic happen. I think that when Ingram is back, we’ll have more ability to control the game.

  46. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Here’s a possible 7th round or UDFA TE we could think about. Texas Tech senior TE Jalin Conyers, 6’4, 265 pounds, 4.68 forty. Although he just an average blocker.

  47. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

hard to see us competing with Mahomes, Allen, Jackson, Herbert, Steelers

I’d say Burrow too, but their D sucks and we both aren’t making the playoffs

    • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

yeah. I was looking at the standings this morning- the only team we have a real chance of catching is the Broncos. Playoff holes are there, but they are really slim. We’ve just dug too deep of a hole to climb out of.

  48. Randy's avatar Randy says:

I seem to recall the conversation around here all offseason was that this offense would need to score 30+ to win. Now, people wanna rip the defense for losses…and even wins? For a first year DC and a new system, I think this defense has done fairly well. Of course it hasn’t been great. This team goes as far as the offense takes them, and the offense hasn’t held up their part.

I’d much prefer a better draft pick than winning more games at this point. Draft spots matter. A top 10 pick is usually much better than one that’s not. That’s a fan’s view. The team, of course, is and should be focused on winning every game, and who knows where they’ll be at the end.

And, TEs are a problem for a lot of teams….especially soft ones.

  49. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    stanger,

We’re at #12 now, and Tua is average and doesn’t guarantee anything. We just came off struggling to win against a 2-7 team at home. Hardly encouraging.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Been 4 solid games since Tua came back, especially compared to the ones before. Wasn’t claiming we would hake the playoffs, just that we wouldn’t have a top 10 pick absent a trade.

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

We only struggled against a 2-7 team because our defense was so bad. On offense we didn’t need to punt

  50. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    stanger,

Yeah, I do agree. A top 10 pick is probably not in the cards. I’m just tired of the whole winning just enough games to get into the playoffs and getting stomped scenario. I am a fricken curmudgeon, dammit.

  51. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Tua now leads the NFL in completion percentage with 73.4%. Yes, he has enough passing attempts to qualify. Jared Goff is in 2nd place with 73.0%.

  52. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Opening line has Dolphins as 7.5 point favorites against the Pats.

  53. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Achane leads our Phins in receptions with 46. ‘Reek is in 2nd place with 44. I find that to be disturbing.

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

Tyreek didn’t have a QB that could get him the ball for 4 games. We also have a TE this year that deserves targets. I think this is a good thing that we are distributing the ball much better

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I’m with ya! My only trouble is the $$$ we’re spending per reception/yards/TDs when ya look at ‘Reek and ‘Da Penguin vs Achane and Jonnu.

  54. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Look around the league, lots of up and down football with a lot of teams. We’re 3-3 with Tua and 1-3 without. His Passer Rating is 101.5. Our other QBs combined is 75.8. That’s why we’re 4-6.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I hope Tua ends up as the passing % leader this season.

Led the NFL in Passer Rating? Check (2022)

Led the NFL in Passing Yardage? Check (2023)

Led the NFL in Passing %? Another checked box if it happens in 2024.

I just want to see his TD production go up moving forward.

  55. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

    I agree with M13

it’s a problem that our leading receiver is Achane

and he’s been our leading receiver with Tua back

for whatever reason the Dolphins haven’t been able to scratch the surface of the offense they were last season

I do like that they are spreading it around though

our top 4 WRs are Achane, Hill, Jonnu and Waddle

I think in the long run, we may be harder to defend

but we are still waiting on those big plays to Waddle and Hill

    I’m hoping it’s coming

  56. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I just did a quick look at QBs who have led the league in passing yards, completion %, passing TDs, and passer rating in separate seasons (don’t think ANYBODY has ever led in all 4 categories in the same season).

All I can find are Peyton Manning, Drew Brees, Johnny Unitas, Tom Brady, and Philip Rivers.

The list is slightly longer with those who have led in passing yards, completion %, and passer rating… omitting passing TDs. And they are HOFers or future HOFers.

So lets say Tua ends up leading the NFL in completion % this season. Should that be the case, he’s entering very rare air in NFL history.

  57. Randy's avatar Randy says:

You guys overrate Tua….just like you did Tannehill. And, if you aren’t, that means we have a very bad team. You’re telling me that all that expensive offensive talent that you guys loved buying can’t even perform at a professional level and beat teams without him? That’s crap…but if so…pretty pathetic. But, maybe that’s why this team is a fringe playoff team even with the great Tua.

  58. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Of the 3 QBs who got the huge contract extensions. Would ya rather be in the shoes of Dak Prescott and the Cowboys, Trevor Lawrence and the Jags, or Tua and the Phins right now?

I suppose one could include Jordan Love and the Packers on this list, but Love also leads the NFL in INTs (tied, with 11 INTs) right now.

  59. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

    Randy,

Serious question and there’s no wrong answer. IYO, what is the ONE position we should upgrade in order to make this team much better?

I’ll even accept QB as a legit answer, being Tua has the concussion issues and he might not be for much longer.

  60. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I know it was directed to Randy but IMO, upgrading the LG position, both id possible.

The reason our O isn’t playing up to last year is we can’t beat the 2 high safety look. MM doesn’t have the OL that can give Tua the time.

  61. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I disagree, Randy. Tua is a top 10 QB. He’s better than Tannehill ever was.

  62. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

    ————

NICE highlights! Gotta believe he’ll be taught and excel at blocking with that frame at the NFL level, unless he’s got a medical problem where he can’t get low and bend (doubt that’s the case).

Yes… Conyers should be on radars.

  63. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

we only beat a bad Raiders team by 15, the horror of it

    Vikings over Titans by 10

    Rams over cheats by 6

    Colts by 1 over jets

then theirs the Liins and Saints with blowouts

Why are we supposed to beat the Raiders without them putting up a fight?

  64. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    M13,

Man, I really don’t think about a team in that fashion. What I would say is that a QB’s impact on a team is light years above any other player’s. You can’t even compare them. This team has multiple holes. Both our lines need help. Our LBers need an upgrade. Our defensive backfield needs some good youth. I think we need better TEs. I think we could use a big possession receiver. Why are the STs so bad? Lots of times that’s because it’s full of backups, and they aren’t good. Then, you extrapolate that to what happens on a team with a weak bench when you, inevitably, have injuries.

  65. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    Tim,

The consensus of most here was that Tanny was a top 5-10 QB. We debated it incessantly. People were insulted for suggesting he wasn’t an unquestioned top 10 QB. We might need to add some ginkgo to folks’ weed! Lol

Tua is better than that? He’s good at beating 2-7 teams. We knew that. Win a tough game against a tough opponent in a big situation. I want THAT guy. That’s how I’m judging Tua…not by how many yards he throws for.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I never said that. I defended Tanny over being what I thought was unfair criticism. He was a middle of the road QB with a lot of skill but always made a bad mistake. Not one coach built the best system around him in Miami until he was in Tennessee with Vrabel.

  66. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

now that we have won two in a row

we can post some positive stuff….lol

so who was the best acquisition of the offseason

I have it narrowed down to 3

    Aaron Brewer

    Calais Campbell

    Jonnu Smith

hard to argue against how good Campbell has been

and Smith just gives us a different dimension

but my pick is Aaron Brewer just bc the signing was so criticized

he’s been great IMO – and healthy!

    he really is very mobile

  67. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

    One other positive note

I don’t remember seeing this many rookies contribute in years

Pork Chop and Wright have been getting time since week 1

now Patrick Paul and Malik Washington are contributing

I don’t want to accuse Greir of having a good draft – but the 2024 draft doesn’t look half bad

  68. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

anyone know the story with Bradley Chubb?

would be nice to see him in the field again opposite 🐖🫲

  69. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Last year we crushed bad teams at home the first half or so, because the OL was really good before the injuries piled up

This year the OL has been bad and it’s hurt the O every week

Tua has been pretty good this year at times despite the OL

He played well enough the last 4 weeks to have won them all, with a little luck and D he may have

His only bad game was home vs Buffalo, even that’s debatable

He’s never going to traditionally take his team on his back, but he may in his own way

IDK how we win 2 of GB, Houston, and SF, let alone all the bad teams we play, with our bad OL, STs and depleted team

Just going to try to enjoy the ride

  71. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

    Lol….

“I’m gonna call a play that necessitates you getting a completion,” McDaniel said before calling in the play.Tua dropped back on that play and hit Jonnu Smith for a 70-yard touchdown that put the game out of reach for the Raiders. It’s actually quite fun to see McDaniel back to his former self of last season, but he probably should just concentrate on getting the play in on time. The Dolphins have a horrible history under McDaniel for delay-of-game penalties.

  72. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

Tua press bombing the Jonnu presser…lol

  73. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

There are two things to take away from this interaction. One, the Dolphins are back to having fun again, and when they do that, they are a tough team to beat. Two, Smith is the tight end the Dolphins have needed for a long time, and finally the player Mike McDaniel can rely on.

    ________

It’s always fun when you’re winning as long as you’re not having too much fun…lol

The NFL is registered as “Sports Entertainment”, not a “Sports League” like MLB, NBA and the NHL. WWE Wrestling is also “Sports Entertainment”

Totally agree, and you can put Calais Campbell in there as underpaid as well!

The AFC had a major shake-up after the thrilling Week 11 slate, even if not much changed in the standings.

The Kansas City Chiefs are no longer the lone unbeaten, as the Buffalo Bills own the head-to-head tiebreaker over them for home-field advantage in the playoffs. The Pittsburgh Steelers are also in the race for home-field advantage after their win over the Baltimore Ravens — and now have command of the AFC North.

In the NFC, the San Francisco 49ers are in last place in the NFC West after their loss to the Seattle Seahawks. The Detroit Lions still reign supreme in the NFC North, while the Arizona Cardinals lead the logjam of the NFC West,

While the conference standings didn’t alter much this week, they will obviously change quite a bit over the final seven weeks of the season. Below is a breakdown of the conference standings after Week 11:AFC playoff picture

    Seed Team W L T PCT

    1 Chiefs 9-1 0.900

    2 Bills 9-2 0.818

    3 Steelers 8-2 0.800

    4 Texans 7-4 0.636

    5 Chargers 7 3 0 .700

    6 Ravens 7 4 0 .636

    7 Broncos 6 5 0 .545

    8 Colts 5 6 0 .455

    9 Dolphins 4 6 0 .400

    10 Bengals 4 7 0 .364

    11 Jets 3 8 0 .273

    12 Patriots 3 8 0 .273

    13 Browns 2 8 0 .200

    14 Titans 2 8 0 .200

    15 Raiders 2 8 0 .200

    16 Jaguars 2 9 0 .182

what we need to be is one spot out of the 7th seed going into week 18, play the 1pm game and win, then have the 7th seed lose and fall out

if we should happen to be in the 7th seed at any point earlier we’ll lose and fall off, happens every time for us, when trying to get the final WC spot

    MikeE,

It probably just means they can screw with the rules all they like because it’s not competitive sports.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

what they said was they can interpret the rules and the way they officiate the game

the networks pay megabucks for the playoffs, so when they ask for a certain matchup for the following week, the league tries their best to accommodate them

with it being an entertainment league you can’t sue them for fixing the games

Best thing about Jonnu breaking out is teams won’t be able to scheme him without paying the price with Hill and Waddle

Ironically playing NE this week even though Belicheat is gone

  80. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Jonnu throws the ball into the stands after TD and the ball falls into his oldest son’s lap

he didn’t know they were there

I don’t see where Joe Douglas was the problem. The Jets have a nice roster.

  82. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Ken – getting rid of Douglas might make them better. Odds are if we lose 3 games Grier will somehow keep his job

This is your Tuesday 2:19 p.m. reminder that former Dolphins OLB Andrew Van Ginkel has a career-high eight sacks and two pick-sixes for the Vikings in 10 games this year.

Fonzi once said in order to have someone fear you, you’ve had to have hit someone

    Well Jonnu just hit someone

The O finally has a 2024 identity, all the failures before the 2nd Bills game are now paying off

How do you play 2 high safeties to stop Hill/Waddle AND make a change to stop anything else that’s excelling?

  85. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

They better not underestimate Drake Maye this weekend. Need to force him into making some mistakes. Kid can run also.

Wonder how many more weeks before Rogers ends up going on the IR?

When did Tua stop with the 2 second release planned before the WR breaks passes and start making it up on the fly? It’s like his doppleganger is out there with a different game plan.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I believe our O-Line sucks so badly that even Tua’s 2.2 second trigger is being compromised by pressure.

At least that’s what I’m led to believe by Travis’ post, via PFF.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

        Stanger,

Always remember that PFF is certainly not the ‘Bible’ of sports data… nothing really is, for that matter.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

A 2.5 second release can cover up a lot of problems on an O-line. But doesn’t seem to be what is happening.

      • Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

The plan has been intercepted by D playing cover 2 on Waddle and Hill requiring a 3rd read and more time to find an open receiver. No or less number of quick strikes….imo…lol

Chris Grier signed Jordan Poyer while allowing DeShon Elliott and Brandon Jones to hit FA. That’s a loss for Grier.
