2024 Season – Game 16 – Dolphins @ Browns

It’s very likely that our Dolphins are eliminated from Playoff contention before we play on Sunday at 4:05PM. The NFL rightfully flexed this awful game out of it’s original lofty Sunday Night spot. The Los Angeles Chargers will probably have dispatched the New England Patriots, the Indianapolis Colts will probably beat the NY Giants, and the Denver Broncos may just outlast the Cincinnati Bengals. All of these things don’t have to happen, just one will suffice. Even if both the Chargers and Broncos lose, they also need to lose next week as well. Let’s just get it over with, our team doesn’t deserve to be in the playoffs, they are pretenders, not contenders. For those of you still rooting, sorry – not sorry. Game time temps in Cleveland are expected to be near 60 degrees, so the lowly Dolphins won’t even get a chance to kill the “We can win in the cold” narrative. No, they can continue to be teams worse than us though, this they have shown they are capable of.

The Browns are a terrible team, scoring just 16.3 PPG good for 31st in the NFL. The defense isn’t much better, 26th in the NFL allowing 25.3 PPG. At 3-12, they’re more than happy to lose to continue to be competitive in one thing only, a better draft slot. Our Dolphins will fight like Lions now, now that we’re a sneeze away from being eliminated from the playoffs, we’ll probably wallop the Browns, and Tua will throw for 350 yards with an 85% completion rate and everyone will be joyous! I don’t care what we do in this game, because like most of you feel, you’re probably right that both Chris Grier and Mike McDaniel are both safe. If I was as shitty at my job as either of these 2 clowns, I’d be long gone. I’m better at writing than either of those jokers are at their respective jobs, despite my penchant for commas!

If I had to root for anything, I’ll root for Zach Sieler and Chop Robinson to keep playing at a high level. A loss in this game would be a shocker no doubt, but somehow “Teflon Chris” will keep his job, as will Mike McDaniel, Tua’s biggest fan. I’ll also root for Jonnu, who is a bright spot for this team on offense. I also have him in FF in the Championship game, so hopefully #1 remembers to use him. Jason Sanders has had an excellent year as well, and I also have him on my FF squad, so I’ll root for him. I think mostly I just feel contempt for this team. Grier is a very smug character, and when I look at what he tried to do, and view the results, he’s nothing but a failure. His guy Ross gave him the OK to go for it, mortgage the future, and in that endeavor, we’re 7-8 on the outside looking in, and soon that gate will close on us and all the Dolphins will be seeing the playoffs from their living room couches. Using Tua as an excuse is pathetic. That’s not an appropriate excuse, because you got caught with your pants down betting he would stay healthy. They bet hard, and bet a lot! WE ALL LOST THAT ONE!

Chiefs only beat Broncos 16-14 at home in KC. Chiefs only beat the Bengals 26-25 at home in KC.

I think the Chiefs would prefer the Dolphins make the playoffs over those other 2 teams and try to beat the Broncos on the road next week.

  2. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

He thinks he is in the playoffs.

    @OmarKelly

“What I’ve seen is guys not blinking every time things don’t go anyway they hoped,” Dolphins Mike McDaniel. “As a result we’re staring at another playoff game against the Jets.”

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

He might not want to tell the team this is a playoff game, they might choke the game away. Maybe they can get Tua a special band aid for his boo boo so he can play

  3. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

BTW – Tua wasn’t even walking with a limp after the game. This is your franchise QB, your go to guy wearing a sweat outfit walking on the field with men who put their bodies on the line. Sorry, that’s not a Captain, a leader. How does he even look at his teammates?

  4. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    BBM,

It’s easy to look good at LG when you have the best young tackle in the league…from Iowa…playing next to you! 🙂

  5. Randy's avatar Randy says:

I don’t care if Tua played or not. But, my question is: Just how serious is this injury? I mean…playoffs on the line…pretty much a gotta have it game if you’re seriously trying to get in the playoffs. I’d think you’d want all hands on deck. It would have to be a pretty serious injury to sit my startup QB in that situation.

  6. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Brock Bowers seems to be worth his #13 overall pick.

He set the NFL all-time record in receiving yards for a rookie TE. He currently has 1,144 yards receiving on 108 receptions in 16 games.

  7. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    BBM,

Then I don’t get it even more. You sit your starting QB in a win to get in game when you’re still considering it 90 minutes before the game? Unless the dude can’t walk, he’s in there in that scenario. Makes no sense unless they just figured they could beat Cleveland without him.

Tua getting downgraded to doubtful on Saturday showed that they knew there was a significant chance he wasn’t going to be able to play.

  11. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Steve – “They ordered him to sit”

It doesn’t matter, not one bit. It’s a huge problem either way. I also believe he could have forced his way into the lineup, but we’ll never know, will we? They’re gonna treat him like a princess, he’s gonna play like a princess, and we’re gonna lose because of both of those things. This organization is not an NFL football team, it’s Pop Warner.

we are 5th in total defense this season

    it doesn’t feel like that

we don’t give up a lot of yards

but we are middle of the pack in points

and never get sacks or turnovers

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

So many missed tackles, but we’ve also had the easiest schedule in the NFL and that counts a lot to why our stats don’t look awful. We were really exposed against the better teams.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

not getting sacks and we’re still #5, could be an argument for pressures

also when you have a large plus number of takeaways your O is on the field less, because you have the ball more often across the 50 to start a drive, and when one is taken to the house, as we saw in Dallas vs Phil yesterday, the other team gets a double possession

In many blowout games with lots of winning team TOs the total yards are close, anyone who plays fantasy football has seen it

You check your FF pts for a particular player in a blowout with high hopes only to be letdown

  15. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Does Coach Cupcake even speak English?

According to Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel, it certainly wasn’t the quarterback’s decision to sit out.

“Ultimately he absolutely wanted to play,” McDaniel said of Tagovailoa. “It wasn’t a pain tolerance thing, because he wanted to. That’s not in the equation for him.

“The main thing was that he not only was super susceptible to a much more significant injury based upon that injury if he were to fall in harm’s way, but a major factor was the lack of strength due to the injury, and his inability, as we forecasted, to protect himself and his teammates within the pocket and doing the things that he normally has to do.”

The Dolphins initially ruled Tagovailoa questionable Friday before downgrading him to doubtful on Saturday.

“We were kind of faced with the reality that it was kind of plateauing right then,” McDaniel said. “And then ultimately all the way up until this morning I kind of kept an open mind and a hopeful mind.”

  16. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Steve – Now that you’re here – Do you think it matters whether Tua wanted to play and they shut him down, or if he just let them shut him down? Same net result, he doesn’t play. Do you think that’s OK?

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

not really, because it’s the weenie injury prone QB vs the Josh Allen scenario

when Tua gets hurt they also have to protect him against himself, with Allen he’d be like get the F out of my face I’m playing and rightfully so or he’d demand a trade

  17. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Campbell has become the undeniable leader of the Dolphins’ defense. A player everyone else listens to. While it won’t likely happen, the Dolphins should be begging him to stick around one more year.

    https://phinphanatic.com/calais-campbell-perfect-reaction-dolphins-season-saving-win

I bet he plays in 2025, not sure he’ll stay in Miami though and it would be telling against everyone’s favorite cupcake should he play elsewhere and Ross better be paying achtung

  18. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

last 2 teams on our 2025 schedule now finalized vs Skins and Chargers

we’ll actually have a home game vs LAC, seems we play them 1 out of every 4 out west

  19. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Tyreek was money yesterday with 9 catches on 9 targets for 105

with Tua out their D played closer to the LOS allowing Tyreek less double coverage, our run game paid the price, but Huntley made em pay

not sure how the jets will play us, Huntley deserves an act II

  20. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I mentioned I went to our friends for Christmas day and watched football. It was a “meh” day since his team, Steelers, and his wife’s team Texans both got crushed.

Right now, first round of playoffs would be Steelers at Texans. If it stays that way, I am going to invite myself over. LOL

  21. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

    @schadjoe

Broncos favored by 8.5 at home vs. Chiefs, on news KC will rest starters

Dolphins favored by 2.5 at Jets

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

it’s gonna be a little painful when we beat the jets but the broncos beat the chiefs

The odds makers are probably right on this one

but we had our chances to seal a playoff spot and whiffed

we need to get better regardless of whether we sneak into the back door of the postseason

  22. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

    Mike

I don’t think the schedule is a huge factor in those defensive stats

Regardless, it’s something to build on for 2025

It’s our DC’s first year and he has less talent than his predecessor

if we can make some big plays from time to time – it’s going to be a difference maker

it wouldn’t be crazy to focus on brining in some young Defensive talent this offseason

I have most of the defensive positions as needs with the exception of pass rusher

  23. Randy's avatar Randy says:

The only stats that matter are points for and points against.

  24. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

it’s funny that we play in Cleveland again next year

not a lot of cold weather on the schedule other than the usual division opponents, the browns and the Steelers

but we get the nfc south next season so road games at Atalanta and Carolina aren’t real worrisome

and we even get a some game with the colts

  25. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I’m reading that Aaron Rogers “benched himself” when the jets were down big yesterday

isn’t that just quitting on your team?

  26. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    BBM,

All I saw on that video was Paul blocking his guy 10 yards downfield. He got schooled a few times yesterday, but the young man is showing some promise.

  27. Randy's avatar Randy says:

I don’t believe a word the NFL says but supposedly Kenny Pickett went into the game yesterday with broken ribs and then injured them further. A QB playing injured. No shit?

  28. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Piggy, Rodgers did pass up Tom Brady yesterday as the most sacked QB in NFL history. I think he really wanted to break one of TB’s records before he retired. I also think he saw joining the Jets was his best opportunity to get that record. He did it and then took himself out of the game. LOL

  29. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    BBM,

Paul looked pretty bad a few times yesterday against Garrett, but I’ll give him some grace going against that cat. He’s still got some technique issues, but he’s a rookie. I don’t think he’s going to be a high end player. I think he can be a solid starter.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

he can stonewall a defender on any given play, so there’s room for growth

Jones and Eichenberg just suck all the time

  30. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

That’s tough for us. Only bright side on it is the Chiefs have a bye week, which gives less incentive to sit starters.

  33. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Quite honestly, Tyler Huntley looked really good yesterday, granted it was against the measly Brownies Defense. Perhaps… just perhaps, Huntley should be our vet backup QB moving forward.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Night and Day btwn yesterday and when he played earlier in the season. Maybe he just needed to learn the O.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Exactly, Stanger! I feel like Huntley displayed a much better understanding of the McDaniel Offense from the last time we saw him, earlier in the season.

        I saw tangible growth. Perhaps he’s a keeper after all… we’ll see!

  34. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

    Stats…

    — ‘Reek needs just 61 more receiving yards to get to 1,000 on the season.

    — Jonnu needs 1 more TD reception to become the all-time, single-season record holder for the Phins. He’s currently tied with Keith Jackson with 7.

    — Tua currently leads Baker Mayfield in completion % (72.9% to 71.7%) to become the completion % champ for the ’24 NFL season.

    — First-time DC Anthony Weaver currently coaches the #4 NFL Defense (yards). If this trend continues for 1 more game, it will mark the first time in 18 years that our Phins finish with a top-5 Defense.

Not everything is sour in Miami, but dammit, we could be so much better than an 8-8 team.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Personally, I feel Anthony Weaver has turned a woeful Defense (roster wise) into a winner. And he couldn’t have done it without Calais Campbell. We MUST find Calais’ replacement in the ’25 Draft.

  35. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I can’t wait to do an autopsy of this team. So much is good, so much is bad. We can take flight if we make simple corrections… I don’t believe we need a total rebuild.

Here’s the actual draft with Grier in control:

    First pick: 170 lb WR

    Second: 165 lb WR

Third: Injury prone 172 lb RB but he runs a 4.4 40

Fourth: Injury prone Safety with 8 starts in college

Fifth: Injury prone OG from Valdosta St.

That’s all the picks we have because we traded the rest for a 4th round pick in 2030.

    • ElephantRider's avatar ElephantRider says:

      Lol

Valdosta St! I worked with a prick that went there. When he was bragging about it I told him I never heard of it and it sounds like a club soda. Never seen someone get so mad. Good times.

  58. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Wyoming, I posted him not long ago but I really like this kid. I know we have other needs but think he would be sick in our offense. He’s Deebo on steroids. He is a former dual threat QB at 6’5 225 and runs a 4.45 forty. Another big target we need.

Most sites have him going by mid 3rd. If he is there at 98 or 99, I am taking him.

  59. Wyoming85's avatar Wyoming85 says:

    Nick Korte

Looks like bad 2025 comp pick news for the Dolphins: Christian Wilkins has now seen his snap count fall below 25% on the season. That means that he gets no boost at all in the compensatory formula, and that could drop the round his contract is valued in from the 3rd to the 4th.

  60. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    ER,

That’s hilarious especially because I chose Valdosta State because I was actually recruited by them out of HS. And, they just beat our local college team(where my daughter went) to go to the NCAA II national championship game. They lost the championship, but it all brought back memories.

  61. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

    BB Mike,

You and I both see that Jay Higgins’ listed speed is rather slow (I see 4.76). Yet when I watch his tape, it doesn’t add up to me. I mean, he’s clearly faster than 4.76!

Not saying he’ll run a sub-4.5 at the Combine, but he almost had to be ailing when timed at a 4.76, right? Can’t be a top-5 coverage LB at 6’1″ running a 4.76… even if his playing speed is much better than his straight-line speed.

Me too… I’m very much looking forward to seeing what he runs at the Combine. He’s already a ‘man-crush’ for me in the ’25 NFL Draft.

Randy, what do YOU think of Iowa’s Jay Higgins, man?!!

  62. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    M13,

I love Higgins as a college LB, but I question his ability as a pro. I don’t think I’d look at him until the 5th round or so. He’s a great leader and a smart football player. He has all the intangible qualities you want. I do think he was a bit of a product of how Iowa plays defense.

If you can draft him at the right spot, I think he comes in and becomes a great ST player out of the gate and maybe he develops into a solid but not spectacular pro. You’re right in that if you watch him he seems to play quick, but I’m not so sure that’s because of his athleticism. I think it’s more a product of his intelligence and Iowa’s defensive scheme.

Take him in the 5th….MAYBE the 4th….but that would be a reach for me. But, with his intangibles, he’s one of those guys who might surprise everybody. How’s that for a decisive evaluation? Lol

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

LOL, well I appreciate your honesty, Randy! Me too… I think he’s a natural leader, very intellegent, and he just just has an ‘it’ factor about him. Kind of reminds me of somebody we drafted out of Texas Tech to play LB. He wore #54 for us, if memory serves… 😉

  63. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Dodson, 26, recorded an interception, a quarterback hit, and 15 tackles in the Dolphins’ 20-3 win against the Cleveland Browns. The last time an AFC linebacker recorded at least 15 tackles and an interception was Vontaze Burfict in 2016.

Teams can use a “standard elevation” to make up to two practice squad players available to play in a regular season game.

Chiefs can only sit so many starters, maybe 8, and we saw how that played out vs Buffalo a few years ago on the last game of the season

Why the Miami Dolphins Must Retain Defensive Coordinator Anthony Weaver for 2025

    Posted by Austin Dobbins | Jan 1, 2025 | Dolphins News | 0

As the Miami Dolphins prepare for the 2025 season, one of the most critical decisions they face is ensuring the continuity of their defensive leadership. Under the guidance of defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver, the Dolphins’ defense has undergone a remarkable transformation, becoming a formidable force in the NFL. Weaver’s leadership, the unwavering support from his players, and the impressive defensive statistics this season all underscore the necessity of retaining him for at least one more year before he goes off to be a head coach.

    Transformative Leadership and Player Backing

Anthony Weaver’s appointment as defensive coordinator has been a game-changer for the Dolphins. His leadership style emphasizes discipline, adaptability, and a deep understanding of the game, which has resonated with the players. The trust and respect he has cultivated within the locker room are evident, with players frequently praising his strategic acumen and motivational skills.

Veteran defensive end Calais Campbell has been particularly vocal about Weaver’s impact, stating, “Coach Weaver’s approach has brought a new energy to our defense. His ability to adjust and keep us focused has been key to our success.”

Additionally, linebacker Jordyn Brooks expressed his appreciation for Weaver’s leadership, saying, “I think it’s been outstanding. You guys get a chance to talk to him when you ask him questions, and you kind of can get a feel for his demeanor and his personality. I think that’s the way you got to be to coach men in this league.”

These insights highlight the profound impact of Anthony Weaver’s leadership on the Miami Dolphins defense, underscoring the importance of retaining him for the upcoming season.

    Impressive Defensive Statistics

Under Weaver’s stewardship, the Dolphins’ defense has achieved remarkable statistical milestones this season. The team ranks 8th in points per game 20.8 and 9th in the NFL in passing defense, allowing just 207.8 yards per game. This marks the fewest passing yards allowed by a Dolphins defense since 2006.

In terms of rushing defense, the Dolphins are also 9th, conceding only 102.8 yards per game. This balanced defensive performance has been crucial in keeping opponents’ offenses in check and providing the team with opportunities to control games.

Additionally, the Dolphins’ defense has been effective on third downs, ranking 5th in the league with a 35.5% conversion rate allowed. This efficiency has been pivotal in limiting opponents’ scoring opportunities and maintaining momentum throughout the season.

The Dolphins have struggled to get to the quarterback and create turnovers, yet they have dealt with numerous injuries and limited talent. Even without these two factors, the Dolphins’ defense has been impressive.

    The Importance of Continuity

Retaining Anthony Weaver is not merely a matter of maintaining statistical performance; it is about preserving the culture and identity that he has instilled within the defense. The Dolphins have significantly improved key defensive metrics, and losing Weaver could disrupt this progress. His deep understanding of the game and ability to adapt to various offensive schemes have been instrumental in the defense’s success.

The support from the players further emphasizes the importance of continuity. A defense that believes in its coordinator is more likely to execute game plans effectively and perform at a high level. The trust and respect that Weaver has earned are invaluable assets that contribute to the overall success of the team.

Letting Weaver help draft and sign “his” guys will be crucial in the Dolphins’ defense elevating to the top of the NFL, along with its health.

    Conclusion

The Miami Dolphins have experienced a defensive renaissance under Anthony Weaver’s leadership. The impressive statistics, coupled with the unwavering support from the players, highlight the critical role he has played in the team’s success this season. To ensure continued growth and competitiveness, the Dolphins must retain Anthony Weaver as their defensive coordinator for the 2025 season. His leadership, strategic acumen, and the positive culture he has fostered are invaluable assets that the team cannot afford to lose, and any team would be grateful to have a head coach.

My conclusion is they laid on the BS too much

How’d that D look against GB and Hou?

Down right putrid, if you ask me

I think he’s done a good job, but let’s not annoint him anything yet

the missed tackles alone are cause for concern

I’d like to see him flip with MM and be our 2025 HC, but not because our D is other worldly

    • Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

i don’t think that was the gist of the article. I didn’t see anyone being anointed to anything.

A top 10 D over a season is impressive and keeping the D coordinator for a second year maintains continuity and usually enhances the success next year.

      You don’t agree?

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

what’s impressive is our D showing up against good teams, and there weren’t many we played this year

Buff, Sea, Rams, GB and Hou only in the Rams game did our D show up 25 pts per those 6 games

People blame Tua, he can’t beat good teams, maybe it isn’t him

I blame 🧁 and his soft ass team

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

if Phillips and Chubb had played most of the season, things may have been different

secondary struggled at times with the lack of passrush, Sieler a little Chop, mixed in with a little Campbell and Ogbah and that was it

      • Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

that was also part of the article…lots of injuries and still top 10 D over a season

Hmmm….so it’s my understanding, Tua’s recent hip injury is the same hip he dislocated in 2019 that ended his season with Alabama. We drafted him in 2020 with the 5th pick and he was not healed/ready by season start. When he was drafted, my criticism of the pick was that I thought he was fragile.

5 years later, he injures the same hip, I think in the same manner. Falling/striking the knee to the ground, similar to a force great enough (5 years ago resulting in a posterior hip dislocation) to reaggravate or cause a similar type injury today.

Why would a doctor today say to Tua, “it is not medically safe to play?”

If it’s not concussion issues, it’s hip issues or ankles (both have been tied) or ……

    He’s fragile….lol

I’ve watched Tyler Warren play for four years now. I don’t see any way he lasts to the second round. He’s a complete tight end.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Well, if the two knuckleheads responsible for personnel didn’t create huge needs up and down the O and D line I’d say it was possible. Alas, we have no secondary, LB’s, O-line, D-line, it’s pathetic! Seems like we finally have a TE though, he got one thing right!

      • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

I still feel like we can get him with our first rounder if we can grab G in the second. We are going to have to restructure contracts regardless. We have three OL positions set for next year, draft one and maybe roll with Jones or Eich. Not ideal, but that’s where we are. Maybe trade Jonnu for a third

I don’t want to spoil my next article, but it’s comical to me that any Dolphins fan could be happy we gave Tua that massive contract, or think he’s worth it. He gave us a 6-5 record, completing nearly every screen pass or pass thrown about 5-10 yards and he is loved. 19 TD’s – 7 INT’s. Tannehill could do that! I can’t wait to write my article on Friday, I can feel the hate flowing freely now . . .

“Your question is absolutely fair, because your question is the same that I had immediately, that I posed to the medical staff and then understanding that they’re unrelated and not consequential or there’s no causation involved in it. It’s a fair question, but they are unrelated in terms of really the nature of that injury versus this, but it’s a fair question.”

  93. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Just gonna put this out there to remind myself to include this in my article. Our defense is now a top 10 defense in some metrics. It seems like here it’s been a season long battle with some folks blaming the defense when others blamed Tua. Give you a hint . . . Both right! The defense got hot against a bunch of shitty teams and now is on the top 10. Our well loved QB has done exactly the same thing all season. Feasted on bad teams and disappeared against good teams. Tua really excelled at completing passes about 5 yards downfield for an incredible 74% completion % or thereabouts and all applauded. Beat all the weak teams and now the defense learned the same trick. 11 games. 19 TD”s, 7 INT’s, and all that for a 6-5 record for a bargain at $55M per. No Tua isn’t the sole problem, but he’s part of it, and it’s fucking clear as day he’s not the solution.
