2025 NFL Scouting Combine is on!

The 2025 Miami Dolphins have 10 draft picks for this upcoming NFL Draft. Most of the scouting has already been done, but fans, and scouts also pay attention to the Scouting Combine, also known as the “Underwear Olympics”. The 40 yard dash is the most popular skill position drill, but the reality is, in any given game, how often is a player running at full speed 40 yards down the field? It’s just one tool to use, and top speed, and how quickly you get there is an important metric for WR’s, CB’s, RB’s, and to a lesser degree, TE’s, S, LB’s and DE’s. Having said that, of utmost importance is the game tape that all these players have already put out during their college careers, however long or short they were. This is probably at least 90% of how you evaluate a player, with the combine results adding a bit more. It’s important for perspective that most of the game is played with contact, and players rarely get to run free without contact, so a WR who runs a 4.25 but can’t stay balanced once a defender engages him with a bump isn’t nearly as valuable as an athlete with elite body control and balance that can run through the contact.

As I’ve mentioned many times already, we’re in the market for an enormous amount of players, some through the draft, we currently own 10 picks overall. We’ll likely be trying to fill close to 30 roster spots, which really is a huge turnover of the roster. Free agency comes first, preceding the draft, and we need to hit on just about every move we make. It’s hard to believe that we need to find at least 3 starters in this draft, and beyond that, find some other players that can give us contribution this season as well. We have 2 offensive guard spots, starting OG spots that more than likely one will be filled in Free Agency. We’re not going to be able to afford an elite OG, as we witnessed just a year ago as our best OL OG Robert Hunt got a 5YR/$100M contract. Hunt may not be a top 5 OG in the NFL, but he was our best. Clearly, we should have tried harder to keep Robert Hunt the previous year and sign him to a more team friendly deal. In any case, we’re going to have to overpay someone else’s player now, but on a lower scale because we simply don’t have the money available.

We also need Defensive Tackles. The trenches are bare, the one year contract players are now gone, and we’re left with a scarce amount of players on both sides of the ball. To add, normally a player DT/DE Calais Campbell doesn’t fall into your lap, his return is still up in the air at the moment. If he does return, I wouldn’t think the huge discount he played at last season would still apply, considering the tremendously impactful season he had.At age 38, Campbell have us nearly 60% of the snaps on defense, and played at a very high level. His play will be very difficult to replace, and while Zach Sieler had another excellent season, he does need a little protection on the opposite side for him to be the sole defender the offense can constantly double or triple team. I would not be surprised if we draft a DT with our first pick.

We also have no players at safety, other than last year’s 6th RD pick (#198) S Patrick McMorris, who in no way projects as a starter, so we have a lot of work to do there. If it seems like I’m repeating myself with “A lot of work to do” I apologize, but Grier didn’t build a team, he just filled up a lot of spots, and now the toll bell is a ringing! We also need a starter opposite CB Jalen Ramsey, and we’ll need some depth too. As of right now, we have 2024 UDFA signee CB Storm Duck, 2023 2nd RD Pick ), 2023 2nd RD Pick (#51) CB Cam Smith, NB Kader Kohou, mostly a ST’s player in DB Ethan Bonner, and then guys recently signed to futures contracts Jason Maitre and Isaiah Johnson. CB is such an important position, valued right after QB, OT and pass rushers. We saw what happens when you bring in a less expensive vet CB like Kendall Fuller, it doesn’t always work. We might have to hope one of our young players flourish or we may have to hit on a draft pick.

When it comes to our first pick in the draft, which is at the moment #13, I most importantly want a great player that makes an impact on this team immediately and for a long future as well. It doesn’t have to be an OT/OG, a CB or a S. Heck, if TE Tyler Warren is there and he has the highest grade on the board, TAKE HIM! To be fair, he’ll probably be gone, but my point is not to pigeon hole yourself by position, just get a great player that can help us for a decade or so. What really kills me is we kind of had that with DT Christian Wilkins and OG Robert Hunt but we failed miserably to retain them, and once again I point out, it didn’t have to happen when they hit free agency, but before. Both players emerged as our best players on either side of the ball, and after so many draft misses, it sucks to let the ones you hit on walk out the door. It’s not that we didn’t get any compensation, but late 3rd RD compensatory picks aren’t going to fill those shoes, especially given GM Chris Grier’s draft history. Maybe we find another Robert Hunt, that would be wonderful, and hopefully it’s in RD 4 where Hunt was found. Maybe we find another Christian Wilkins too, that would be splendid.

Some early top performers at the combine were DE DE James Pearce (Tennessee) who at 6’5 245 ran a 4.47 40 and a quick 1.56 10 yard split. LB Jihaad Campbell was right behind him at 4.52 and a very quick 10 yard split of 1.53, as well as an impressive 10’7 broad jump. The 10 yard split gives you a very good metric for short area quickness and agility, something most of the game is actually played at, and the broad jump shows you a players explosiveness. Previously mentioned TE Tyler Warren (Penn State) will not be participating in any drills at the combine, and he doesn’t have to. He’s the consensus top pick at TE, a super high character player with fantastic physical ability and play strength. It’s not crazy to want a player like that, even if it’s not our top priority by position. Like I said though, getting the best player should be our priority.

As Free Agency comes first, I think it’s imperative to nail down a starting OG, a starting caliber CB, and starting caliber safety. As we know, cap space is limited, despite the increase of approximately $24M from last year’s cap. The Dolphins are + 9.4M, not a good place to be. There are ways to clear more space with the dreaded “R” word, restructure. There are definitely a few contracts I don’t want them touching, and those are DE Bradley Chubb, QB Tua Tagovailoa, and WR Tyreek Hill. They best not gain money to make any of those contracts any worse than they already are in the future. That alone should have them immediately fired if not shot by a firing squad! Don’t effing do it! You made these contracts, (read MISTAKES), eat them, don’t compound the problem and make them worse. Be responsible now, and for the future of this team, I beg you! Let’s just hope they heed my advice, or I’ll be saying this same nonsense for the next 3 years or more, and I’m sure as hell positive you’re tired of hearing it.

Thanks MikeE! Lot’s of work to do!!!

  2. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Though, NB Kader Kohou is a RFA. We have to resign him or put a tender on him.

  3. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I think Kohou will want more than what the Dolphins can afford. If he is not resigned before the start of FA, I don’t think we will be able to match another teams offer.

I’m not as concerned about NB as I think Bonner could play there but also Matre really flashed there last TC/PS.

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Kohou was an UDFA so we more than likely would not get a pick for him, if I understand correctly. Teams, I believe, can only put a 1st or 2nd round tender on a player if they turn out to be that good. Not sure if a team would give up a 2nd for Kohou.

Outside of that, a team could place a tender on a player to recoup the pick he was drafted at but that won’t pertain to Kohou (UDFA).

Only option really on Kohou is put a 2nd round tender on him or a Right of First Refusal Tender allowing the Dolphins to match any offer he gets.

If we do lose him to a contract we can’t afford, he will go into the comp formula. Looking at what we need to add in FA this year, he will get cancelled out anyway.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

2nd RD tender is $5.34M. I guess Kohou is worth that much.

      • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

True. Not sure if a team would give up that 2nd or just wait it out until teams have to lift tenders. Not quite sure what the date is. Will try to find it.

      • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I guess teams can have a tender on a player up to June 15.

        “June 15
Deadline for club to withdraw higher qualifying offer to restricted free agents and still retain exclusive negotiating rights by substituting lower “June 15 Tender” of one-year contract at 110 percent of the player’s prior-year Paragraph 5 Salary”

      • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

It’s a little confusing. Seems like a long time to keep a player in limbo.

  4. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Dolphins met with receiving TE Jake Briningstool, Clemson, 6’6, 241 a day 3 prospect.

He sounds like a Gesicki (per draftbuzz):

    Graded 49% in blocking

Limited size and somewhat slender – lacks punch as an in-line blocker.

Struggles to create yards after the catch, lacking quick elusiveness.

Limited twitch and explosiveness, affecting his ability to break tackles in space.

“We had a really good meeting,” Briningstool said. “Sat down and watched some film. Went through some of my tape, and then just got down to it, talked to them about my personal life, about my family, about how I was raised.

Where Briningstool stands out is as a receiver.  He was particularly productive over his final two years at Clemson, with 99 catches for 1028 yards and 12 touchdowns over that span.

He has only met with Dolphins and 49er’s so far.

  5. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

This from the guy who was a run game coordinator and “guru”

It’s no great revelation to say the Miami Dolphins running game struggled in 2024, but maybe we didn’t realize just how bad it was.

Research from Warren Sharp, founder of Sharp Football Analysis, shows the Dolphins weren’t just bad, they were the worst in the NFL in a couple of key rushing statistics.

For starters, the Dolphins had 28 percent of their rushing attempts in 2024 stopped for no gain or for a loss, and that was the highest mark in the NFL by a pretty good margin. Second on the list was Houston at 23 percent.

Worse, that 28 percent rate was the highest figure around the NFL since 2017.

Wait, it gets better (or worse actually).

The Dolphins had a ridiculously bad 46 percent of their rushing attempts on third or fourth down also stuffed for no gain or a loss. That was the worst showing around the NFL since 2019.

When it comes to running the ball on third or fourth down, the Dolphins overall averaged 3.0 per carry.

When taking away quarterback runs, the numbers are even worse.

Dolphins runners averaged 2.6 yards on third down and minus-1 yard on fourth down, with De’Von Achane losing 3 yards on two carries and Tyreek Hill getting stuffed for no gain on a fourth-and-1.

To have numbers this bad requires a total team effort — in a bad way.

To say the offensive line wasn’t good enough and just couldn’t block well enough to get anything done in the running game would be unfair.

The reality is Dolphins running backs also didn’t do a very good job of breaking tackles.

Per Pro Football Reference, the Dolphins broke 13 tackles on rushing attempts in 2024, and only the Cleveland Browns and Kansas City Chiefs had a lower total, with 12 apiece.

In terms of rushing attempts per broken tackle, where the lower the number the better, the Dolphins were next-to-last at 34.5, with only the Chiefs worse at 37.5.

With blocking, the Dolphins averaged 2.2 yards before contact per rushing attempt, a figure that tied for 22nd in the NFL. The Baltimore Ravens led the league at 3.3 yards before contact, while the Raiders were last at 1.9.

  7. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Rocko – Not that Chris Brooks was ever going to be Derrick Henry Very Light, but he was at least a more physical presence and size. We have a whole lotta smallish backs. It’s another reason a TE like Tyler Warren is so appealing because he’s good at converting short yardage situations from the Wildcat position.

  13. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

As I’ve grown older and wiser in the game of football, I’ve realized that the Combine really only serves 3 purposes…

    1) The interviews. GMs and HCs get to know the prospects through the interview process. If a prospect earns a green flag in his interviews, that’s great! If a prospect earns a red flag in his interviews, he could be completely taken off a given team’s Draft board. Teams want to see hunger/drive, self-dicipline, leadership, accountablility, and some semblence of football intelligence.

    2) Mixing and mingling with other GMs and HCs. This is a time and place where some deals are made, leading up to and including the Draft. It’s ‘tampering’ without officially being called ‘tampering’.

    3) Game tape trumps everything else. If a prospect is so physically proficient or not so physically proficient in the metrics/measures of the Combine, what did we miss on the game tape? For instance: why does this guy have 4.30 speed, yet he can never get open? Or: why does this guy have 4.80 speed, yet he’s always around the ball? It causes a re-evaluation of the game tape.

Exactly and MikeE stated as much also. The Underwear Olympics just makes me rethink where I would draft someone who could fall a round due to athletic limitations.

  35. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

The safety no one has been talking about and ranked as a 7th round to UDFA. He changed all that at the combine yesterday.

So, it is being reported of confirmed interviews, the DOlphins have met with:

OT Grey Zabel, RB Ollie Gordon II, WR Xavier Restrepo, Edge Tyler Barron, TE Gunnar Helm and TE Jake Briningstool.

Outside of Zabel, this does not make me feel that great going into the draft. lol

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Ollie Gordon is a big slow RB with no agility, 4.61 forty, 1.60 split and less than average in vertical and broad.

With Malik Washington, we don’t need Restrepo.

Edge Barron, I like AFTER the 5th round.

Gunnar Helm sucked ass at his pro day starting with a 4.84 forty and went downhill from here.

Briningstool ran slower that Smythe at 4.75 but is one of the worst blocking TE’s in the draft.

Three of the top offensive linemen have met with the Miami Dolphins at the NFL Combine.

North Dakota State University’s Grey Zabel, University of Missouri’s Armand Membou and University of Miami’s Jalen Rivers confirmed meetings with the Dolphins, a good sign considering the franchise’s needs in the trenches.

“That went great,” Rivers said Saturday. “We went over film. I talked to the coach [Lemuel] Jeanpierre, the assistant offensive line coach. Talked a little bit to coach [Butch] Barry as well. It’s been great. Watched film. I’m really liking them.”

“It was a fun meeting talking to [Dolphins coach] Mike McDaniel,” Membou said.

Added Zabel: “The big thing that stood out about that meeting was just the passion they have for football. Super high football IQ in that program, on that team.”

McDaniel especially made an impression on Zabel.

“He’s got a great outlook on life,” Zabel said of McDaniel. “Happy-go-lucky type of guy. Loved being able to finally meet him, shake his hand and have a meeting with him so that was kind of a surreal moment for me.”

  48. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

We can’t go wrong with Emmanwori, Starks or Watts at safety so I think we should trade down and take one of them then hopefully get OT Zabel at #48. Grab a CB, DT, NT and LB after, then fill in with some backup skill guys and/or double down on OL, S or CB.

If you’re drafting, and RD 1 it ends up being a choice of TE Tyler Warren, OG Armand Membou or S Malaki Starks, who do you take? I think that would be a good situation to be in, but I’d lean towards taking the TE or OG over the safety.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I think I might take Emmanwouri over Starks after his combine performance

but I probably take Warren over any of the others

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I agree. It’s a good safety class. I think I am leaning Membou or Starks/Watts after a little trade down. We have no one on the roster to step over and play OT if Paul or Jackson go down. Membou is a RT and Zabel a LT. Either can come in and start at OG and be able to step out in case of injury.

I think Jonah Savaiinaea could do that also (RG/RT). Then there is Donovan Jackson also who has played some LT.

We are not hurting at TE. I love Tyler Warren, but, until FA up to the draft, that’s where I am at.

  52. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Channing Crowder says there will be more downfall with Tyreek Hill this year and the Dolphins should trade him now.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

It won’t help us this season, but I’d trade Tyreek too.

      • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

It would help this year, maybe not a high pick but a 4th and clear very little cap. He would be a 1yr rental for a team this year unless he restructures.

Tyreek is untradable next year with his high base salary. Again, unless he agrees with a team to restructure.

  53. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Piggy, Starks blew everyone away with the on field stuff. I posted it yesterday morning. Yeah, he ran a 4.5 forty, but plays fast/reacts very well on the field.

Georgia safety Malaki Starks recorded the fastest top speed among safeties in five different drills.

    Short Shuttle: 15.24 mph

    W Drill: 17.92 mph

    Donovan Jackson, 6’4, 315

Charles Grant, 6’5, 311, bigger than I thought

    Jonah Savaiinaea, 6’4, 324

    Jalen Rivers, 6’6, 319

    Jonah Monheim, 6’4, 302

    Luke Kandra, 6’5, 319

    Jackson Slater, 6’3, 311

  55. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I think the unfortunate thing about this draft is the position we’re in needing to fill so many spots. I hate that we might have to draft an OG in RD 1 because we can’t miss on that pick. If we wait until later in the draft to do it, we might not get a solid starter. You can be confident that if Membou comes in here he’s going to be a solid starter from day one

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

There are 6 guys who I think could start day 1 at OG, so it doesn’t have to be a 1st round. Though 4-5 of them may be gone by pick #48.

Membou, Campbell, Booker, Zabel, Jackson and Savaiinaea.

Same goes for Emmanwori, Starks and Watts.

This is why I am almost all in on trading down.

  56. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

  57. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I think most insiders, outsiders, and everybody in between will agree that this Draft class is relatively WEAK. Meaning, outside of the top-10 picks (give or take), there’s not much difference between R1Pteens and early 2nd rounders.

Though the ideal would be to trade down and garner an addional pick(s), I think that is ALSO the ideal of many teams in our boat, selecting in the teens. Thus, through supply and demand, it may be very difficult to pull off.

It will be interesting to see if the Combine’s physical testing changes minds.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

To put it another way, we may be stuck @ R1P13… barring a HUGE tradedown. We did that in the 2010 Draft, going from R1P12 (bypassing Pearl Thomas!) all the way down to R1P28, where we selected Jared Odrick.

I don’t want a HUGE tradedown. This is the kind of Draft that is very reminicent of the 2010 Draft in terms of talent or lack there of.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

IMO, I think we’re going to see a lot of teams trying to trade up this Draft… especially from the R1Pteens.

  59. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Lol…I agree. I don’t think it measures stamina or athleticsm for OL. Try a sprint at 220 or 440…lol.

Players they could take on day 2:

OT Grey Zabel, DT Shemar Stewart, TE Mason Taylor, TE Gunnar Helm, Safety Malachi Moore, WR Xavier Restrepo.

    Dane Brugler

I think Armand Membou would be a terrific guard. But I don’t know why we’re moving him – the tape shows high-level tackle traits. Was my No. 8 overall player in last month’s top-100.

    ————-

LOL, I hear ya. I’m talking about relative stamina… like when a 320+ pound human being can break 5.00 in the 40-yard dash. Perhaps I should have used the word CONDITIONED, instead of stamina… but you know what I meant! LOL

Picture this, if you will. An in-his-prime Shaquille O’Neal, standing at 7’0″ tall and 300 pounds… and he has an in-his-prime T-Stead running full speed at him… at 6’5″ and 306 pounds… with his Combine-recorded 4.65 40-yard speed. The mighty Shaq would probably be broken in two!

I’m just sayin’… some of these BIG guys are *scary* fast and VERY in shape. I believe stamina plays a huge part in being able to be that fast as a fat fuck!

  79. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Yes, the Combine has me rethinking a few players I hadn’t considered, as well as a few players I had considered. Now it’s time to go back to the tape to decipher/translate.

Like many, I’m getting really intrigued by A&M’s Shemar Stewart, EDGE . Why is it that his Combine numbers don’t translate to his tape, I wonder? Perhaps he’s more athlete than football player? Was he played out of position or in a system that wasn’t built for his abilities? What was his competition? Did he command constant double-teams… is that why his production was suppressed?

And I’m DEFINITELY going to Armand Membou’s tape… his Combine was super-stellar. Like a couple/few of you, I cannot STAND players from Misery (Missouri!)… but he’s certainly garnered my attention.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Stewart was about 20 pounds lighter at the combine than during his regular season

Absolutely… in a position of need, and we have PLENTY.

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Brady Cook catch you at the combine? He has always been in the back of my mind. I was hoping he had flashed a little more his last season with a good group of WR’s at Missouri. He is super athletic and is a fit for MM’s system with his pre-snap reads and good accuracy underneath – good ball placement allowing WR’s to get YAC. I like his quick release and he throw’s well on the move.

He would be the type of backup who could come in and spark a team with his athletic ability.

I said a few months ago, he’s the Brock Purdy of the draft but more athletic. I may have only mocked him to us once or twice because I think he actually goes by the 5th round due to this weak QB class.

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

BTW, nice no trade draft, though I might have gone CB in the middle instead of doubling on safety. Of course, I don’t know what you had on the board. I like Huzzie and think he will be a good slot CB.

  81. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

A writer on “ClutchPoints” (never heard of them), says the Dolphins should trade Tyreek back to the Chiefs now to give them a dynamic deep threat. Didn’t they draft the fastest 40 guy Xavier Worthy last year?

Says Dolphins should trade Tyreek Hill for:

    LG Joe Thuney, a 2025 2nd round pick (#63) and a 2026 3rd.

Why could Dolphins get that much in exchange for Hill? Thuney’s cap hit is nearly 27 million this year/last year of his contract. He will be 33yo this season and still one of the best LG’s in the league. Chiefs, right now, have a cap of -16 million. They have to clear cap. Thuney would cost the Dolphins 16 million but the dolphins could restructure/extend him and spread the money out.

Only problem with this idea is Chiefs would clear 16 million trading Thuney but then have to pay Hill 12.8 million, so they only clear 3.2 million.

I would take this deal in a heartbeat but it will never happen.

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Dolphins could sign a decent WR who wouldn’t break the bank like Darius Slayton who is coming off a 2yr 12 mil deal. Probably could sign him 2yr 10 mil or less.

      • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Again, this trade likely wouldn’t happen.

Though, it is rumored that the Chiefs are going OL at #31 to replace Thuney and many believe that pick could be OT Grey Zabel.
