Dolphins will go forward with young secondary

Nothing is official yet, summer is about to be upon us, so as far as the NFL is concerned, it’s very early, and nothing is set in stone. What we can probably surmise is that one way or another, whether it’s by trade or just an outright release, DB Jalen Ramsey will not play for the Miami Dolphins. We have a bunch of young players who will get a chance here they wouldn’t get on most NFL teams, but sometimes that’s all a player needs, is a chance. I’m not going to be surprised if at least one player steps and ends up being a decent starter. CB Cam Smith has had chances, and maybe he finally takes advantage of it, but he’s low on my list of candidates. I also believe that Asante Samuel Jr. is not really in the cards, I think we’re in low cost mode, we have a glut of defensive backs, someone should rise to the occasion.

So who are the players involved? Storm Duck is in the thick of it, CB Kader Kohou is an Anthony Weaver favorite, and I wouldn’t discount him playing outside some, and maybe veteran CBArtie Burns will play some nickel. I also think this year’s 5th RD pick Jason Marshall will be heavily involved in this competition, along with a couple of guys who impressed and showed some good things last season such as CB’s Isaiah Johnson and Ethan Bonner.

At Safety, I think the 2 vets have a leg up, SS Ifeatu Melifonwu and FS Ashtyn Davis, but I definitely think last year’s 6th RD pick S Patrick McMorris and this year’s 5th RD pick S Dante Trader will get their chances and may even overtake one or both of the vets before the season is over, because the future is what this team is all about. We can say we’re not rebuilding, but this roster needs an overhaul, and plugging holes with older players seems to be a thing of the past, and rightfully so. It’s time to do it right. We need to get the most out of draft picks, develop them, and keep them, and stop overpaying for other team’s former players in Free Agency and in the trade market. That’s how we got here, and since we’re here now, let’s make the most of it.

I was angry about the way this team has been handled, but if Ross closed the purse strings because he’s tired of paying malcontents and former superstars that aren’t producing playoff wins here, then that’s good with me. That doesn’t mean GM Chris Grier is gone, but it could mean his time is running out. Ross never refused to bankroll Chris Grier’s wants, but that has now come to and end, and rightfully so. This is the right way to do things, and we need to realize that draft picks are precious, and the players you draft with those picks need to be valuable assets on your team and produce, and as far as early picks are concerned, produce NOW! Stop stifling rookies development in order to let vets play, we’ve done that far too often. We know that at least in the secondary, that type of practice is over with because all we have are young players, besides CB Artie Burns, and Safeties Melifonwu and Davis. Not gonna lie, at first I was thinking it would be ridiculous to have these young players fight for a job, but now, I’m excited about it and even somewhat optimistic.

I’m not in any way saying our secondary will be great, but if we can see that we have some starters among all those young guys from last year and this year, and they can play ball, even if they’re average, I think that’s great for the team. It’s time to do things the right way now and stop trying to get immediate results by overpaying veteran players. Now we do have some tough decisions on some of our own veteran players like DT Zach Sieler. He’s underpaid, but you don’t want him to go from underpaid to way overpaid either, especially as he’ll be turning 30 at the beginning of the season. He is a great player though, salt of the earth, lunch pail type of guy, and he deserves to be paid without question. We’ll have to see what happens with TE Jonnu Smith who was my favorite player last season. He gave us something we haven’t had here, and I know we all loathe to pay players who are under contract, but he’s a good guy by all accounts and if we can make him happy without paying him silly money, I’m all for it. Next week I’m going to discuss everyone here’s favorite part of the team. Not QB Tua Tagovailoa sillyheads, the Front 7!

I find Eddings to be a bit juvenile for lack of a better phrase. His books are G rated while Raymond, E Feist or PG rated Stephan and Erickson and Robert Jordan are kind of R rated while Joe Abercrombie is definitely R rated at a minimum or MA

T-Stead is such a natural. He’s going to become the next big thing in the media, methinks.

Not a chance in hell, they won’t allow a Fins Homer into the national media🤪

I was at a party once a while back and met my ex ex-wife’s uncle for the first time. During the conversation, I made a comment that something was pretty simple. It’s not really rocket science. Then a little bit later in the conversation, I asked him what he did for a living He was an NASA engineer and worked on the space shuttle program. Specifically, the booster Rockets …..

Is an ex ex wife a current wife?

      ooh, that’s a deep question . . .

    • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

No, that is just speech text F’ng up my sentence when I dictated from my phone. Or, it could be my first ex wife, which in this case it was not.

(two if you are wondering, and two is more than enough so there will never be another Mrs Rockphin.

Alain Poupart ranks Miami’s D-line as the worst in the division. (Basically because we have three unknown rookies hoping the play well in the NFL.

After reading the list of guys in the AFCE I can’t say that I disagree.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Yeah, man. I agree with ya. We may surprise, but as of right now we’re definitely looking up at the other 3 D-Lines in our division.

Wish we could have retained Calais, if for nothing more than his veteran leadership. I understand wanting to get younger at the position, but Calais is a true professional.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

AND he had one helluva season for us in ’24.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Calais was a 1 yr contract guy, Mike doesn’t allow those any longer

MUCH has been stated and printed about the (lack of) leadership and discipline of our Phins of late, with many fingers pointed at Coach McD.

It doesn’t get easier after losing T-Stead and Calais Campbell, two of the greatest locker room leaders — league-wide — in recent memory. Coach McD had better stop trying to be everybody’s ‘buddy’.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

And no… that doesn’t mean Coach McD needs to become ‘Sheriff Asshole’, either. He just needs to demand more accountability, discipline players who break team conduct rules (ie: late for meetings), and stop holding hands.

He’s a great motivator who is full of genuine optimism… but if he can’t or won’t lay down the law, he’s in over his head as a HC.

      • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

I think one of the problems stems from the inability to enforce any rules. MM has been quoted saying how many times can I find a guy for being late?
I kind of see where he’s coming from I mean these guys make 10 20 million a year. What is 15 $20,000 in fines to them if they decide they wanna be late or think their life is more important than their job

The problem is with paying these immature assholes who have never had to live a real life millions of dollars. 10 to 20 times what their coaches are making

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

welllll they lied about culture change kast year, so I’m not…blah, blah, blah

the difference this year is, last year was a losing season, so ears are more open, like after a loss

  6. Randy's avatar Randy says:

That’s a’ight. I think our DL has some nice potential. I’m not worried about how many games we win this year. This team needs to develop younger players and build our LOS specifically. You’re always trying to win, but this regime needs to stop sacrificing the foundation of a stable franchise for championships it’s not even close to. I’ve said this a lot, but you need to be able to honestly scout yourself. Bad moves happen when you can’t.

And yes….I’ll still be rooting to win a SB this year, as always….that’s just being a fan!

    • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

      I getcha

I expect to have the second losing season in a row in for a full blowup next season. But I’m gonna root for every game to be a win

That being said, Can’t wait on or even count on the development of the young guys when a new regime might come in and want to go a totally different direction.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

losing Tyreek, maybe Chubb, Phillips, that could be considered a soft rebuild, with Tua, Waddle the new DL/OL and a few other positions mostly intact, can’t really see a rebuild, even with a new coach

I mean what other coach is going to say let’s release some tough guys for faster wimps than MM

  7. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    Rock,

You take away playing time if fines don’t work. MM’s inability to figure out ways to motivate/discipline players is a little disappointing for an NFL HC.

On the Glory Daze podcast, hosted by Johnny Manziel, Hill had a lot to say about looking for a new deal.

“I’m very grateful. I want to be in Miami. My mindset is being in Miami,” Hill said. “To me, I don’t even have to be the highest-paid [receiver], I just want to win ballgames and take advantage of being in this great organization.”
