Dolphins Training camp going full steam, Savaiinaea signed, other bits too

Training camp is on! Rookie OG Jonah Savaiinaea is signed, and the the Dolphins added another free agent OG, former Niners and Titans OG Daniel Brunskill. The Dolphins also added CB Cornell Armstrong, who was originally drafted by our Dolphins in 2018 in the 6th RD. He’s more than likely likely a ST’s and back end of the CB rotation type of guy if he makes the 53 man roster. As far as the O-line is concerned, OG Liam Eichenberg who was slated to be the 6th guy on the O-line will miss a few weeks into the season with an injury, which necessitated the Brunskill signing.

I’m glad the big guy (Jonah Savaiinaea) is signed and now working, which is something I felt was so important to him being as ready as possible to start for us this season. Rookies have enough obstacles to deal with, a holdout and missing time could have proved to be too much. It also seems as if Daniel Brunskill is a guy who could step in and give us quality play without a huge dropoff, and that’s good, especially if Eichenberg is really going to miss a lot of time. James Daniels is working with the team now which is a good sign, I was having my doubts as to whether he would be good to start the season while still recovering from injury.

It appears as if WR Erik Ezukanma is making is his annual Training Camp drool reports, but is anyonme here buying that he can do it and stay healthy during the season? Not me, not anymore. We have some depth as it is now with Malik Washington and Nick Westbrook-Ikhine, who is a bigger, more physical receiver, so EZ has his work cut out to even make the roster. I have nothing against Erik Ezukanma, but I do think the team has to be careful though to rely on him because he’s let us down by mostly not being able to stay healthy.

It’s crazy how fast time is going, the first preseason game is in about 3 weeks, Aug 10th, against the Chicago Bears. Apparently our “rivalry” jersey log was released, and it appears that the logo is orange and black, which would lead you to believe the Jersey with be orange, black and aqua, and not feature the Marlins pink color in them. Thank goodness for that, pink has no place in the NFL, but is fine in the Lingerie League where it belongs!

So we’re supposed to get excited about a 6 year vet looking good in non contact practices? Ok.

  2. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Piggy- False! Tua’s exceptional in games all season long, except when we play winning teams, then he craps the bed. Also, IDGAF about completion percentage. Complete 60% instead of 70% but throw 35-40 TD’s instead and we win a lot more games. High completion percentage doesn’t win games

All I care about in TC and the PS is guys get their work in and no injuries. Don’t care about stats.

    Practice matters

    experience matters

I want to see a team set a goal and then put in the daily work to achieve that goal

I do not want to watch the Dolphins with a gun in my mouth and say it doesn’t matter anyway bc they are going to suck

it takes hard work and perseverance to do something great

the only way to get there is to start with training camp

I don’t know where this is going but I like to see a team work towards a goal

so maybe those reports aren’t for all of you

    but they are for me

I’ve to read about it and watch even being fully aware that the train can come off the tracks at anytime

  5. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Piggy – no, but expecting him to play better this season because he’s practicing well is silly. He practices well, plays well, just not in the big games. When he does that I’ll be a believer

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

      to each his own Mike

what can I say, love is blind🤪

  6. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

camp is the same as PS games, what happens doesn’t count, but it matters

if a guy like Sieler isn’t getting it done, im not worried, its those that need to pick up their game, that need a good camp, Cam Smith

  7. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Piggy – Zach Wilson doing well in practice matters a whole lot more to me. Tua knows the offense like the back of his hand. I expect him to do well

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I think your are underestimating the value of the familiarity with the offense

how many times have we seen a QB set back bc they are trying learn a new offense with a new OC or coach

they are clicking now in TC and they will probably click in September bc of it. What we are seeing in TC is familiarity –

it’s an open question as to whether it pays off in the long run

but this is the 4th year of this offense with Tua and the 4th year of Tua/Waddle/Hill

it’s going to matter if they are clicking early when everyone else is trying to find their way

my expectation from this team is that they pick up where they left off in 2023 and they go to a new better level

so they need to click now to get to that place

it’s not irrelevant bc we haven’t won big games

it’s relevant bc it is likely to put us in position to finally win big games

I don’t care much what any veteran player does in practice at this point in the year. They should all look good. It’s basically wakthru practices. There’s no praise to be handed out at this point. I look at guys who have had health or injury issues to see how they’re doing and rookies but otherwise it’s not all that instructive.

It’s okay if the koolaid is starting to flow. It’s August. Wait, is it August? I don’t keep track of these things anymore. 🙂

I’m just ready for some football. I expect the Dolphins will disappoint as they have for more two decades. It’s who we are until we aren’t.

But I love the beginning of the season when we still have all possibilities before us, even with the expectation of utter failure, lol.

  11. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Mike it’s a BS narrative because EVER QB in the league has a better record against losing teams than they do winning teams. It’s the nature of competitive sports. Does Joe Burrow suck? Can he only win against losing teams? Let’s take a look…

Tua is 40 – 24 regular season in his career with 10 of the 40 wins being against teams that ended the season with a winning record. (Another 5 would have also, if they didn’t lose to the Dolphins)

Joe Burrow is 38 – 28 and 1 regular season in the same time period. 15 of his wins came against teams with winning records at the end of the season.

Justin Herbert is 41 – 38 regular season in the same time period. 10 of his wins came against teams with winning records at the end of the season.

I guess the whole 2020 draft class just beats up on bad teams???

    Your assertion is wrong man.

    • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

The weird thing about Mahomes is the record shows he plays down to bad teams. Most of his losses since 2020 have come to losing teams….

    AI Overview

    +1

Patrick Mahomes has an 89-23 record against winning teams in his career according to StatMuse. This means he has won 89 games and lost 23 games when playing against teams with a winning record

      You ass!

I am not a Tua Stan. I just like to argue and you are wrong so you are an easy target to argue with.

  18. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Tua’s biggest issue is availability due to concussions (and late last season, his hip). Know what else is a gigantic issue? The availability and reliability of Tua’s Offensive teammates.

Those games he’s lost to winning teams? MOST of them featured several (as in more than two) starters OUT.

And in those games he’s lost to winning teams? His teammates shat the bed with drops (no, not uncatchable passes, DROPS), fumbles, or lack of a running game, period. Know how I know? I just looked it up on PFR (Pro Football Reference).

JMO, I think it’s getting pretty crazy to blame EVERYTHING on Tua… and I haven’t even gotten to our Defensive injuries!

Listen, if Coach McD can’t figure out 2nd half adjustments or game-plan any better, ya can’t pin that on Tua either. If Grief and McD can’t assemble a team of players who can stay healthy (call it the ‘need for speed’), that’s not Tua’s fault. If Grief continues his reckless contract extensions to divas like Jalen Ramsey and ‘Reek, that’s not Tua’s fault either.

If anybody hates Tua that badly, I’ve got good news for ya: he’s not going to be in the NFL much longer. Why? One more concussion is likely to doom his career… and with the exception of him trying to play Superman vs Damar Hamlin last season, that’s not his fault either. Sad.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Keep in mind: by no means am I calling Tua the GREATEST QB EVAH! He’s got issues, yet he continues to improve on his issues each and every season. His flaws and shortcoming are not the result of a lack of effort.

I’ve seen MUCH tangible growth from Tua since his rookie season. My biggest gripe regarding Tua? I want to see him throw more TDs per season. Now that we have two legit redzone targets on the team, perhaps it happens this season… if his career isn’t destroyed by yet another concussion.

Tua Tagovailoa has played 5 seasons (2020-2024) in the NFL, all with the Miami Dolphins.
Here’s a summary of his career regular season statistics:
    Games Played: 64
    Passing Attempts: 2,037
    Passing Completions: 1,387
    Completion Percentage: 68.1%
    Passing Yards: 15,506
    Passing Touchdowns: 100
    Passing Interceptions: 44
    Passer Rating: 97.9
    Rushing Carries: 154
    Rushing Yards: 430
    Rushing Touchdowns: 6
    Sacked: 111
Note: Statistics on fumble returns and tackles are also available but are less central to a Quarterback’s primary performance evaluation.
Sources: Information extracted from various sources, including Pro-Football-Reference.com, Wikipedia, ESPN, and StatMuse

  20. markeyh's avatar markeyh says:

Tua Tagovailoa’s 2023 NFL season stats
In the 2023 NFL season, Tua Tagovailoa, playing for the Miami Dolphins, had the following regular season stats:
    Games Played: 17
    Passing Attempts: 560
    Passing Completions: 388
    Completion Percentage: 69.3%
    Passing Yards: 4,624
    Passing Touchdowns: 29
    Passing Interceptions: 14
    Passer Rating: 101.1
    Rushing Carries: 35
    Rushing Yards: 74
    Rushing Touchdowns: 0
    Sacked: 29
Additionally, Tua was selected to play in his first Pro Bowl in 2023. He also led the NFL in passing yards for the season. His touchdown-to-interception ratio in 2023 was 2.1, which was the third-worst among starting quarterbacks ranked in the top 18 for passer rating. However, it’s worth noting that Super Bowl MVP Patrick Mahomes and Josh Allen were the two quarterbacks with worse ratios

  21. markeyh's avatar markeyh says:

We have a top tier QB if Tua can just stay healthy and his healt has a lot to do with the protection he gets from the offensive line which has been sub par throughout his career.

Honestly, I don’t see too many people putting Tua in the same convo as Mahomes or Allen. Sure, you WILL see some numb nut Twitter/X users saying some outrageous shit… but that includes politics, music, food, or basically anything under the sun, for that matter! And conversely, I see numb nut Twitter/X users saying Tua is worse than Ryan Leaf!!! HUH???

Personally, I think Tua is a damn good QB… but he’s certainly NOT Mahomes or Allen… but then again, who is? We’re talking about two future HOFers there, IMO. And both will have much longer careers than Tua as well.

I say, root for the kid to succeed! Why? He’s the best QB we’ve had since Marino by FAR. Just realize he’s not for long at this point… barring a medical miracle.

Even if Tua were to break every single-season QB record in history, it would be foolish not to draft his replacement early next Draft.

I think the cornerback room will get protection from the defensive scheme that our coordinator will provide to protect that weak unit with that being said I’m happy with the veterans that we just recently added and yes, I do think we need to add one more veteran

  29. markeyh's avatar markeyh says:

As for Tua he is not to be compared to anybody, but Drew breeze, which I think is a fair comparison breeze has success in the NFL. He’s a Super Bowl winner and I think we can get the same thing from Tua under the right circumstances.

Oh boy… the Charge are already blowing out the Lions in the HOF game tonight and we aren’t even to halftime. It’s going to be a LONG season for the Lions this year after losing both their OC and DC over the offseason.

  33. Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

That was the best game he ever played imo

LOL @ Brian, remaining forever vigilant!

  38. markeyh's avatar markeyh says:

Well, injuries are part of the game. We should know that as Dolphins fans so the Ravens secondary being decimated was not our problem.

  39. markeyh's avatar markeyh says:

When healthy we have a top 10 quarterback I have no doubt about that even though you look at somebody’s rankings that have him in the 20s. I look forward to the season and him stay healthy and we’ll see where he lands.

No, he’s not Josh Allen. No, he is not Lamar Jackson and no, he is not Joe Burrow but as someone said earlier, he’s the best quarterback we’ve had since Dan Marino that’s why I don’t see why people are not more supportive of him even with his limitations because when he’s in the game, the Dolphins have a great chance of winning against any team.

    I wholeheartedly believe that.

    Fins Up!

  40. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Markey – Saying Tua is the best QB since Marino is a lot like saying Jack Jones is the best CB in our secondary. Does anyone really care? It’s a long list of failures, and Tua is the best of the failures? Big whoop!

    • markeyh's avatar markeyh says:

When you consider the QBs that we had since Marino’s retirment I would think some appreciation in having a competent QB as our starter is someing that’ a given. But I can agree to disagree on some who are not a Tua fan. 🙂

  41. markeyh's avatar markeyh says:

And I happen to like the Jack Jones signing….LOL!

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Nothing wrong with Jones, but the fact that he might be our best CB isn’t saying anything good about our unit, considering we just picked him up off the street.

      • markeyh's avatar markeyh says:

Was it you who said Calais Campbell was a good pickup last season? How about Jonnu Smith, who was also added late last season, and he had a Pro Bowl season. So who’s to say Jack Jones won’t have such success?

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

It’s just a running commentary on Chris Grier. Last season we picked up Calais Campbell and he was one of our best players, also picked up off the street. All these trades, draft picks, but a month or two before the season, we pick up free agents that are better than most of the guys on the roster. What does that say about our roster?

I have to say our 2023 roster was the closest we have had to a championship roster in a long time. Key injuries and MM’s inexperience derailed that whole season.

This season, we have a better OL on the interior again and our edges back. No more key injuries (like Kohou) and this season could give us some excitement. Not saying playoffs yet though. I just like our front 7 and think our LB/Edge group is the best it’s been in a long time. Our only weakness on defense looks to be on the boundary.

The Miami Dolphins announced today that they have signed quarterback Brett Gabbert and placed cornerback Kader Kohou on the injured reserve list.

  47. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Cornerback Kendall Sheffield, who missed practice Wednesday, will be back at work.

Alexander Mattison has flashed in training camp, showing speed that wasn’t supposed to be in his repertoire, and McDaniel says he’s a great example of players not belonging “in a box.”

Patrick Paul is having a “very good camp,” per McDaniel, and that’s because he had a very good five weeks of training on his own following a very good eight weeks of offseason work. “He’s operating every day like he knows the regular season is coming and he wants to impress people.”

Rookie Ollie Gordon II got an opportunity to “introduce himself” to his teammates when the pads came on, McDaniel says. Adds Gordon is learning by mistake and he’s responded in a great way.

Asked right away about whether he’s changed his ways to make sure some of the issues of 2024 don’t resurface, McDaniel says it’s easy to hold players accountable with the right players. Hmm, Jalen Ramsey reference perhaps?

On deciding who should make the move from right guard to left guard between James Daniels and Jonah Savaiinaea, McDaniel talks about making the players uncomfortable by putting them in different spots. Savaiinaea has started at left guard and Daniels at right guard, but McDaniel suggests it’s not set in stone.

  48. markeyh's avatar markeyh says:

If you look at the Dolphins roster, you’d have to be blind not to see if there’s talent throughout that roster on both sides

In fact, the reason why men are so upset because of the disappointing outcome of the 2024 season due to injuries

The dolphins have been to the playoffs two out of the last three years and they would have went to the playoffs last year. Had it not been for our quarterback losing six games

Everybody jumps on our GM, but he’s done his job very well in fact, I’m one of his biggest supporters

Mike McDaniel has made quite a few mistakes, but that is expected for anybody who was given a position of the head coach for the first time

After so many years of mediocrity and we finally have a team that’s been built that is a playoff contender and fan still are not happy

I think it’s Ludacris that people are talking about our head coach being on a hot seat as well as our GM when this is the best and team we’ve had in well over 20 something years

But people blindly find reasons to complain because the team has not won a playoff game in over 20 something years

But what they don’t see is that we finally have a team that could potentially win a playoff game

Sickle fans are unreliable, and unfortunately people who specifically don’t really pay attention to what’s going on listen to all the negativity instead of seeing for themselves

I think this year’s team is just as good if not better than the 2023 team that went 11 and six once again with the caveat that we don’t have any major injury to key players
