Dolphins Training camp going full steam, Savaiinaea signed, other bits too

Training camp is on! Rookie OG Jonah Savaiinaea is signed, and the the Dolphins added another free agent OG, former Niners and Titans OG Daniel Brunskill. The Dolphins also added CB Cornell Armstrong, who was originally drafted by our Dolphins in 2018 in the 6th RD. He’s more than likely likely a ST’s and back end of the CB rotation type of guy if he makes the 53 man roster. As far as the O-line is concerned, OG Liam Eichenberg who was slated to be the 6th guy on the O-line will miss a few weeks into the season with an injury, which necessitated the Brunskill signing.

I’m glad the big guy (Jonah Savaiinaea) is signed and now working, which is something I felt was so important to him being as ready as possible to start for us this season. Rookies have enough obstacles to deal with, a holdout and missing time could have proved to be too much. It also seems as if Daniel Brunskill is a guy who could step in and give us quality play without a huge dropoff, and that’s good, especially if Eichenberg is really going to miss a lot of time. James Daniels is working with the team now which is a good sign, I was having my doubts as to whether he would be good to start the season while still recovering from injury.

It appears as if WR Erik Ezukanma is making is his annual Training Camp drool reports, but is anyonme here buying that he can do it and stay healthy during the season? Not me, not anymore. We have some depth as it is now with Malik Washington and Nick Westbrook-Ikhine, who is a bigger, more physical receiver, so EZ has his work cut out to even make the roster. I have nothing against Erik Ezukanma, but I do think the team has to be careful though to rely on him because he’s let us down by mostly not being able to stay healthy.

It’s crazy how fast time is going, the first preseason game is in about 3 weeks, Aug 10th, against the Chicago Bears. Apparently our “rivalry” jersey log was released, and it appears that the logo is orange and black, which would lead you to believe the Jersey with be orange, black and aqua, and not feature the Marlins pink color in them. Thank goodness for that, pink has no place in the NFL, but is fine in the Lingerie League where it belongs!

“My mindset was no vacation for me until this is all over,” rookie offensive lineman Jonah Savaiinaea said. “I wanted to stay here, get acclimated to this weather …. Having Pat (Paul) here all summer, we’ve got to build that chemistry, especially now playing next to him. Just building chemistry not only on the field, but off the field and just being able to trust each other.”

Thursday, left tackle Patrick Paul told the media that he and Savaiinaea were together in the building every day this offseason watching film and working out. Savaiinaea took it one step further, issuing a challenge to defensive tackle Kenneth Grant, Miami’s 2025 first-round pick, to see who could be the first one to arrive each morning and the last one to leave.

“It’s a battle every day to be honest,” Grant said of his matchups against Savaiinaea. “First in the building, last in the building. We’re challenging each other on the field and off the field.”

Outside linebacker Jaelan Phillips’ practice plan called for a reduced number of reps, but that didn’t mean it had to be a light day.

“That’s just a little extra reps,” said Phillips when asked about running sprints off to the side with fellow linebacker Bradley Chubb during practice. “Bradley has been really critical for me and for everybody in the room and defense of holding us to a really high standard. Today, took a little less reps and to make up for that we’re running sprints on the sideline.”

    Travis Wingfield

Tua hits Waddle for another explosive – 20 yards in the air, 10 more after the catch. That was four straight plays of 20+ to end practice, three of them probably home run TDs.

And that’s it. What a show today. Podcast and story coming tonight.

Willie Gay has Achane dead to rights at the LOS, but De’Von puts his foot in the ground and gets all the way back out the backside to take advantage of Pat Paul walling off Chubb for another explosive.

Tua to Tyreek 60 yard TD! Tua loads up, resets his feet, all day to throw, Reek gets on top of Ashtyn Davis (Storm Duck the corner in coverage) for the score. Dime.

Monaray Baldwin hits Cam Smith on a double move. Nice concept that brought a route in front of Smith that he jumped, Baldwin sneaks in behind him and Ewers had it timed up well for the long TD

Ben Stille doesn’t take the cheese on the bootleg and closes down Ewers escape hatch. Ewers floats one out but here comes Jack Jones FROM OUT OF NOWHERE! For the breakup.

Willie Gay is all over the route to the outside from Ezukanma but Wilson paints the corner and finds the completion.

Now Zach has all day to throw, surveys the entire field and comes back to Eskridge with a bullet over the middle. Tua and Bev both come and dap Zach up for the play.

Defense is bringing the heat today, threw in exotic blitz at Tua there and he hung in there and found Waddle for a hot completion. Offense is settling in against all these different things the defensive front is throwing at them.

De’Von Achane takes a carry around the corner, beats Brooks and Chubb with speed, Tanner Conner issues a punishing pancake downfield on Kendall Sheffield – explosive play led by the block of the TE and the speed of the back

Long-developing play action shot has Waddle open down the middle as Tua hits him for 30-ish

Grayson Murphy takes the corner on Ryan Hayes and heats up Ewers for a would-be big hit

Zach Wilson with another nice rip, this time a corner route (didn’t see the WR), but he’s hit that hole under the safety, over the curl/flat defender a few times today.

Jack Jones really nice rep passing off coverage, flipping the hips, running to the corner. On the same play, Pat and Jonah were in unison passing off a rush game up front – good on good rep

Tua back in – rips a shot to Waddle for 20 over the middle. Next play, Sieler introduces Patrick Paul to his famous swim move and blows the run up in the backfield.

Jason Marshall gets a PBU one rep, next rep he draws man coverage, stays in phase on the takeoff, gets his head back and makes the pick going to his back along the sideline – great play by the rook. Ewers on the throw

Cornell Armstrong drives on a slant and gets a PBU on a Zach Wilson throw for AJ Henning

    Not good:

Kader Kohou was covering Tyreek Hill on a play and went down to the ground. He was limping off the practice field under his own power and went back inside the facility with trainers. He did not return to practice.

Then, later in team drills, undrafted CB BJ Adams out of UCF went down and had to be carted back to the facility.

    @OmarKelly

According to NFL sources #Dolphins safety Minkah Fitzpatrick has hired Drew Rosenhaus as his new agent.

Fitzpatrick is pushing for a new contract considering he’s out of guaranteed money on his existing deal, which pays him $15.5M this season.

Can confirm through league source the Dolphins are signing nickel cornerback Mike Hilton.

  40. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Has to be some roster moves to make room for CB’s Jones and Hilton.

I really hope it’s not Kohou. Fuck!

  41. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

They probably will have to make some deals to clear cap.

I hear Minkah wants a new deal, but not more money just guaranteed money.

  42. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

They waived CB Ryan Cooper Jr. today to clear one spot.

  43. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

    Doesn’t sound good:

And while we don’t know for sure yet whether the Hilton signing was related, but fourth-year veteran Kader Kohou left practice early Saturday after being injured while covering Tyreek Hill in a receiver-vs.-DB drill.

As Hill made a hard cut outside — the receiver is limited to one half of the field — Kohou fell forward toward the end zone.

He then immediately grabbed his left knee before eventually limping off the sideline. After being examined, he walked off the field with a trainer, at first showing a clear limp but looking much better as he got closer to walking inside the Baptist Health Training Complex. He did not return to practice.

  44. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

From Alain Poupart: (trying to weed out what Wingfield said in Wyoming’s post)

The festivities began with the team’s theme song blasting over the loudspeakers as players ran onto the field. Three rookie offensive linemen, led by second-round pick Jonah Savaiinaea, roused up the crowd.

One of the songs that played while the players were going through stretching was “Top Play,” one of the songs recorded by new tight end Darren Waller.

Newcomer Jack Jones had a great rep when he had blanket coverage and broke up a pass intended for Tarik Black, who earlier had a long reception down the right sideline.

Interesting that the first play had Minkah Fitzpatrick covering Hill.

On the first play of 11-on-11s, guess what? Yep, a flag for illegal procedure or illegal formation.

James Daniels did a nice job creating a cut-back seam for De’Von Achane.

On the first pass, Bradley Chubb created some pressure after working past Julian Hill.

Alexander Mattison got a big hole up the middle on Zach Wilson’s first snap, with Ryan Hayes making a key block.

Zach Wilson’s first pass was a pretty throw over a defense to wide receiver Dee Eskridge near the right sideline.

On the first bomb of the day, rookie safety John Saunders Jr. had blanket coverage on Tarik Black down the middle and broke up Wilson’s pass.

Linebacker Channing Tindall busted a running play by getting to Ollie Gordon II in the backfield after shooting through the gap.

Brooks got to Achane in the backfield for the second time.

Rookie free agent Andrew Armstrong made a nice low catch on a pass over the middle from Wilson.

Brooks and Benito Jones combined to bust up a pass play when they got close to Tagovailoa.

Willie Gay Jr. batted down a Tua pass intended to Tyreek Hill after coming on the blitz. Gay continues to look good in camp.

Minkah Fitzpatrick had the play of camp so far when he leaped to intercept a deep Wilson pass intended for Tahj Washington, who was well covered on the play.

Quinn Ewers had a great completion to Black for about 25 yards when he lofted a pass just over cornerback Jason Marshall Jr. We’ll say it, that was Tua-type touch.

Jaelan Phillips had a stuff against De’Von Achane on a running play after some special teams work.

Austin Jackson and Pharaoh Brown combined to spring Alexander Mattison outside and then did a flying bump chest. Mattison has been running with authority early in camp.

Cornell Armstrong came up to break up a Wilson pass up the middle intended for Tahj Washington.

Rookie Jason Marshall Jr. had another spectacular interception, leaping and making the catch falling backward on a Quinn Ewers pass down the right sideline intended for RB Nate Noel. There was a flag on the play at the line of scrimmage, but it doesn’t change Marshall’s impressive play.

Zach Sieler busted up a running play by Ollie Gordon II by getting into the backfield immediately.

Wilson had another nice second-level throw over a defender, this one to Dee Eskridge.

Waddle got himself wide open in the middle of a zone down the middle of the field, and Tua hit him for a sizable gain.

Wilson had a nice dart over the middle, again to Eskridge.

After Julian Hill false-started, Tahj Washington went low to catch a pass from Wilson.

I have an unabridged version of the Miami Dolphins Curse regulation on file, and after careful reading, it does say in Article 4, Section 2 under required injures, clause 4 that in 2026 our secondary will be utterly decimated before the start of preseason.

Now it doesn’t specify CB vs S, but I think we can see the way this particular section of code is being applied this year.

Hilton, 31, wasn’t one of the primary culprits in the Bengals’ defensive unraveling last season. He allowed three TDs, but his passer rating against (92) wasn’t awful. PFF rated him the 16th best cornerback in the NFL last season and the best against the run.

Here’s what Grok had to say about Darth Kader’s injury, for whatever it may be worth…

    @grok

    ·

    Replying to

    @FugiMichael

As of July 26, 2025, Miami Dolphins CB Kader Kohou suffered a leg injury in training camp practice after tangling with Tyreek Hill during drills. He limped off but walked to the locker room under his own power, with no pronounced limp later—an encouraging sign. Severity unknown; no updates yet. Team signed veteran CB Mike Hilton as potential precaution.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I still think the Hilton signing came far too quickly after Darth Kader’s injury. I mean, team doctors didn’t even have enough time to put ice on Kader’s leg… much less assess any kind of damage to Kader before signing Hilton.

Doesn’t mean Kader wasn’t seriously injured, however. Hoping for the very best.

  61. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Jack Jones is ELECTRIC like Deion Sanders! He’s a true… ahem… BALL HAWK!!!

His only problem? Like Deion, he’s not a willing tackler… especially against the run. He’d better grow out of that or it could be a short stay in Miami for him.

Oh yeah… and he takes chances on intercepting the ball. Like Trevon Diggs of the Cowboys, he can give up a big reception in trying too hard to make a game-changing play. The hope? He’s still young and coachable in year 4 of his NFL career. If Anthony Weaver and company can teach him proper techniques and patience, he could be quite the FA steal.

    I’m rooting for this cat!

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

And just so y’all know, Jack Jones IS a bonafide starting CB in the NFL. If memory serves, he had the 3rd highest snap count of all NFL CBs last season.

He’ll have to earn the starting job, of course… but he’s already penciled in as one of our starting boundary CBs.

  62. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

    BBM,

Here’s another point. IF Darth Kader is A-okay, I think Hilton takes the nickel role. That would likely put Kader as a boundary CB. Was that the intention all along? Don’t know… but that’s what I foresee.

Kader has had an excellent offseason to date!

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Adam Schefter of ESPN reports on Sunday morning that the Dolphins have reworked the contract of Minkah Fitzpatrick. They haven’t added any years on his deal, but have given him $16.42 million of new money in the form of a signing bonus.

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

      @AdamSchefter

Dolphins and their recently-acquired safety Minkah Fitzpatrick have agreed to a revised contract, adding a $16.245 million signing bonus to his deal. There had been no guaranteed money left on the contract, and no additional years were added. “We are comfortable with this commitment to Minkah as we continue to work with the Dolphins on a multi year extension,” said Drew Rosenhaus, Fitzpatrick’s agent.

  67. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

The Miami Dolphins and safety Minkah Fitzpatrick have agreed to a restructured contract, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. The move added $16.245 million to Fitzpatrick’s signing bonus, adding about $2 million to the safety’s 2025 salary, moving it from his 2026 money owed. For the Dolphins, moving the money into the signing bonus created about $11 million in additional cap space for Miami, providing them with needed room to continue to upgrade the roster for this season.

How can you pay Minkah before paying Sieler? Someone make it make sense for me please. I hate Grier, I really fucking do!

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

This is from NFL.com. They did this much in a signing bonus and cleared 11m in 2025 cap???

Only way to clear that 2025 cap and reduce money owed in 2026 by 2m is to spread the signing bonus out over void years, but they don’t mention that. They said “no additional years added. Though, I think void years were added. I don’t see how else they could clear cap.

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I don’t think an extension will be done until after the season. He is still under contract through 2026. I think this was done for 2 reasons. The main one was to clear much needed cap for this season and, second, to make the player/agent comfortable moving forward.

I don’t think they revisit an extension until next offseason.

I read that the Dolphins and Fitzpatrick are working hard on an extension. I just can’t stand how this team operates. What are you basing the extension on? His dramatic falloff in play the last 2 seasons? It’s GM malpractice if they give him a raise, no reason whatsoever to do that

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I think all of this stuff is about manipulating the salary cap. It’s not Grier sitting there saying how can I fuck this team up. The team has “capologists” working on this stuff 24/7. This is the business side of the game we love.

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Yeah, I don’t know about the extension. I know they haven’t given him more money, yet. They just are paying him up front with a signing bonus to reduce his cap hits this year and next. Again, only way to do that is spread it out over void years, which I hate.

  70. Randy's avatar Randy says:

Handing out more money to a vet who’s on the backside of his career again, eh? Great. How does this help this team when it might actually have a chance at competing for something?

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

They had to clear cap. They only have about 1m of cap and that is without Daniel Brunskill, Jack Jones and Mike Hilton contracts hitting the books yet. Cornell Armstrong’s contract also hasn’t hit the books yet, but he won’t crack the top 51 anyway.

  73. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Almost everything is about money. Guaranteed money for this year or next can free up cap space. Extending MFFF beyond that doesn’t help our cap, so any extension is crazy at this juncture. End of story

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I don’t care about that stuff anymore. Soto is very good but is he worth what the Mets or any other team would have paid him?

So considering Minkah Fitzpatrick and Zach Sieler are in similar situations – not having any guaranteed money left on their deals – when you address one and not the other as a franchise you have the potential to look bad. Especially when one was already making top dollar & the other is one of the biggest bargains in the NFL. Making the problem worse is the perception the Dolphins always take care of outsiders before they take care of their own. Take this how you wanna.

  75. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Tim – You know as well as I do that comparison doesn’t work. No salary cap in baseball, so who cares how much anyone gets paid? Read my post from above from Omar. This is exactly what I’m talking about. Why do we continue to reward outside players before our own? It drives me crazy, and we’ve made the wrong decision almost every time we’ve done it. Ramsey, Chubb, Hill, and now potentially Minkah

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

How has the cap affected anything the last few years? Most of the big names are paid. We even move on from one to another. Our team was derailed because of injuries. Not the cap.

  76. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I agree 100% that if we’re making Minkah happy, we’d better damn well make Sieler, the guy who has always done right by this organization, happy too.

If we were only going to take care of one of those guys, it needed to be Sieler. So I expect we’re going to get a deal done with him some time during TC because that is so obviously the right move.

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Minkah and Sieler have the same agent in Drew Rosenhaus. My guess is something should be in the works for Sieler. If not and I’m Sieler, I’m on the phone with Rosenhaus saying WTF.

I am sure something is in the works.

  77. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I wouldn’t be surprised if Rosenhaus didn’t have a secondary office at Dolphins HQ. lol

Ok, guess the big ole recap is necessary . . .

Rewind back just a couple of years ago when we had an opportunity much like the Jets just did with Garrett Wilson and Sauce Gardner to sign Christian Wilkins and Robert Hunt. We chose not to sign them early, balked at Wilkins’ demands which really weren’t off, and then went on to allocate that money to Jalen Ramsey, Bradley Chubb, Tyreek Hill and Tua Tagovailoa. How did all that work out? Keep in mind Wilkins had no injury issues with us and played a shit ton of snaps for us in his last 3 seasons, and Hunt is considered one of the top OG’s in the NFL. What has Jalen Ramsey, Bradley Chubb, Tyreek Hill and Tua Tagovailoa done? Any playoff wins? We have no CB’s, we have a safety who quit on us so we traded him away for another safety that quit on us, and now we’re throwing money at him too. We have no CB’s, and while Chubb has potential, he hasn’t done shit for us. Hill also quit on us but he feels remorseful (now), but watch him if he gets only one or two targets in a game or two we lose and see how fast he changes his tune. This team is built with straw, I want a team built with bricks, a perennial contender to not only make the playoffs, but win them too!

yeah how’d that work out with Wilkins?

Ramsey played a yr and a half at a high level, then did what he does, agreed bad trade

I have no problem with the other 3, for Tyreek he said some things, but it hasn’t effected anything on field, just a diva divaing

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

      • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Brandon Jones had his best season ever in his 1st season after the dolphins let him go. He had 115 tackles, 3 INT’s, 10 PD’s and 1 FF.

We let him go and replaced him with Poyer.

maybe AVG and Jones don’t get those stats with us

AVG wanted to play with Flores, not much we could’ve done except backup the Brinks truck

I also liked Jones, but he’s really not special, an effort guy

  79. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

everything being mentioned about players not being re-signed goes back to Grier, probably at Ross’ command, trying to win an SB

that swing and miss has caused these players to go to other teams

sure you have to get lucky, but Grier doesn’t seem like he has any idea how to build a team to win

he seems like he listens too much to his HC, then the 2 idiots just throw shit at the wall…

  80. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I hate the inmates running the asylum, but these superstars of today are different animals, you’re paying them too much money to not give them a say in how to play them

Minkah left the first time for this reason, and if you’re going to give him a new contract, you’d better allow him some input on where he plays or its Ramsey all over again

You’ve gotta allow the DC to run the show, no reason they can’t talk it out with your best players too

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Fuck that! MFFF is back on a trial basis this time. He fucking plays wherever we tell him.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

To add, why on earth would we give him a new contract now? Let’s see what he does for us this season, and then we can worry about it

I agree, no new contract until he plays out the year

  81. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Don’t forget that we allowed S DeShon Elliott to walk as well… not just Brandon Jones. Elliott killed it last season with the Stealers*, probably making Minkah expendable.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

      Minkah currently costs us $18.4M/season

      Brandon Jones: $6.6M/season

      DeShon Elliott: $6.3M/season

      Jevon Holland: $15.1M/season

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

So we’re actually paying Minkah more $$$ this season than it would have cost us to re-up Holland.. who really has sucked over the last 2 seasons for us.

Minkah had BETTER be playing FS for us… Minkah’s fall-off came when the Stealers* switched him to SS.

But to think… we could have kept both Brandon Jones and DeShon Elliott for less than what either Minkah and Jevon are getting paid this season?

If it doesn’t work this season, sorry… Chris Grier should have been fired LAST season.

  82. Randy's avatar Randy says:

Why would you trade for a guy and then pay him more money if you hadn’t already hashed it out with him regarding how he was going to be used and what you expected from him? If you talk to him and he’s not on board with your plan then you don’t trade for him.

This is completely false and revisionist history. (not surprising) Van Ginkel wanted to stay in Miami and reportedly turned down some other offers waiting on Miami to resign him. He just wanted an OFFER from Miami and they didn’t extend one so he wound up signing where he did. HE DID NOT leave Miami to play with Flores. He wanted to stay in Miami but Grief had fucked the cap so badly they thought they couldn’t even extend an offer! Just let him walk.

MIAMI GARDENS — Dolphins nickel/slot cornerback Kader Kohou is “day to day,” according coach Mike McDaniel, and at this point it doesn’t seem as though his right leg injury will keep him sidelined into the regular season.

“If there would be concern it would be completely made up,” McDaniel said Monday.

  87. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Not much of a Kohou update:

McDaniel said there needs to be a few more evaluations before they have a better understanding of the seriousness of the injury. The swelling needs to go down, and once it does, they will have a better idea of how long he will be out.

“We’re working on a day-to-day evaluation on him,” McDaniel said.

“If there would be a concern, it would be completely made up,” McDaniel said. “There’s quite literally, I don’t have the information to lean any way.”

  92. Randy's avatar Randy says:

Why did AVG bother saying he wanted to stay in Miami when he knew they weren’t going to keep him? Why didn’t Miami make any sort of offer to him? Anybody who believes a word a player or agent says is taking a huge leap of faith.

Maybe Miami knew from having Flores and AVG in the building that AVG wanted to go with him. Maybe AVG knew all along he was going to follow Flores and just wanted to sweeten the deal. Maybe he was even hoping other teams might get into the bidding and might push up his contract. Maybe he didn’t want every team to know he really wanted to follow Flores or maybe even wanted to put more pressure on MN to get more money. Maybe Miami knew all this and wanted no part of it.

By the way, did any other team make any effort to sign AVG? I don’t recall. Maybe they knew it was pointless…maybe not.
