State of the Dolphins

Training camp is in full swing and the fans are EXCITED! GM Chris Grier just signed FA CB Jack Jones off the street, and instantly he becomes our best CB. The fans are thrilled, “Hey Chris, great move!” Maybe Chris Grier has the jump on the NFL, the draft doesn’t mean anything, who cares about developing talent when you can just wait until a month or so before the season and pick up a couple of guys that will be better than any player you spent hours and hours of research on, scouted for hours, went to games, watched hours of film. Don’t bother, it’s not really important because if you’re patient, there will be a gem of a player available in Free Agency that you can just pick up a month or so before the season starts, and he’ll end up being one of the best players on your roster at that position. Chris Grier found the cheat code to the NFL!

Let’s put this into perspective. Stop giving Chris Grier the benefit of the doubt. The fact that Jack Jones may be our best CB is a sad commentary on how Chris Grier built this roster. I say this so often, I think you guys are numb to it, but he’s just not good. QB Tua Tagovailoa is killing it in Training Camp and the fans are going wild! Not only has he not thrown an INT but he might not even have an incompletion. Just remember, there’s no contact with the QB in Training Camp, and he’s also playing against our secondary where Jack Jones who was picked up last week is our best player. QB Tua Tagovailoa knows this offense backwards and forwards. He is a dedicated player to his craft, I’ll never slight him on that. This offense was designed for him by HC Mike McDaniel from the very beginning, and Tua can run it with his eyes closed. Unfortunately, the reality is, once the season starts and we play a better team, don’t expect the performance to be as electric as it is now in training camp.

RB Alexander Mattison has been looking much better once the pads went on. Our 6th RD Draft pick Ollie Gordon who got tons of hype has disappeared. Ollie Gordon or Mattison for that matter probably won’t see many carries with DeVon Achane and Jaylen Wright ahead of them, but as we all know, injuries run rampant in the NFL so depth is always tested. You have to carry at least 3 RB’s on the roster, so Ollie Gordon may well get cut and end up on the practice squad. So far with the WR’s, Nick Westbrook-Ikhine has been invisible. That’s a disappointment, but my guess is he’s going to get a lot of rope with the departure of TE Jonnu Smith. NWI is probably the best replacement of Jonnu as a bigger WR that can terrorize smaller DB’s or LB’s in the slot. NWI was great last season at catching TD’s, more than a 1/4 of his receptions were for 6. He had 32 receptions and 9 TD’s, and we can use that type of player with all the smaller WR’s we have like Tyreek Hill, Jaylen Waddle and Malik Washington and you can add Tahj Washington too.

So what’s happening at TE? Where’s Waller? We’ll be saying that the entire 2025 season. No worries, we have guys that get hyped up every season before the actual season starts like Tanner Conner, Julian Hill but we do have physical blocking Pharoah Brown who will be in the starting lineup and that boy can block! Will Tanner Conner or Julian Hill finally step up? Julian Hill is in year 3, Tanner Conner going on year 4. I wouldn’t bet on it, but it sure would be nice for one or both of these guys to match the hype with some good play.

Listen, I know I’m negative, and if that’s a downer for you, I apologize. I just think the way we go about things in this organization is all wrong. I think Chris Grier will likely be gone after this season and he will have left the new GM, whoever that might be with a shitty cap situation and a roster with holes galore. This roster is full of injury riddled players with boom or OUT potential. One we traded for, Bradley Chubb. We drafted Jaealan Phillips, who I truly admire for his amazing resolve. He’s faced down two major injuries the last two years and comes back ready to go and just as fast and strong as he was before those injuries. God bless that kid, I root for him always. QB Tua Tagovailoa we drafted and in his own words, he knows he needs to stay out of harms way to play an entire season. Unfortunately, that type of play doesn’t usually translate to championship play, because every now and again, a QB has to extend a play, run for a few yards and challenge a defender for a first down or a trip to the end zone, and we probably won’t see those things from #1 so he can stay healthy enough to remain in the game. Some of you here compare Tua Tagovailoa favorably to Patrick Mahomes, Joe Burrow and other top Qb’s like Josh Allen. That’s not how ANY of those guys play, but hey, you tried and you get a consolation prize for your effort, you got mentioned in this article!

Cornerback Kendall Sheffield, who missed practice Wednesday, will be back at work.

Alexander Mattison has flashed in training camp, showing speed that wasn’t supposed to be in his repertoire, and McDaniel says he’s a great example of players not belonging “in a box.”

Patrick Paul is having a “very good camp,” per McDaniel, and that’s because he had a very good five weeks of training on his own following a very good eight weeks of offseason work. “He’s operating every day like he knows the regular season is coming and he wants to impress people.”

Rookie Ollie Gordon II got an opportunity to “introduce himself” to his teammates when the pads came on, McDaniel says. Adds Gordon is learning by mistake and he’s responded in a great way.

Asked right away about whether he’s changed his ways to make sure some of the issues of 2024 don’t resurface, McDaniel says it’s easy to hold players accountable with the right players. Hmm, Jalen Ramsey reference perhaps?

On deciding who should make the move from right guard to left guard between James Daniels and Jonah Savaiinaea, McDaniel talks about making the players uncomfortable by putting them in different spots. Savaiinaea has started at left guard and Daniels at right guard, but McDaniel suggests it’s not set in stone.

Thanks MikeE! I am not concerned about the TE position. In 2023 we had Smythe, rookie Hill, Kroft and Conner.

If Waller never plays a down, I think we are fine at TE. Especially in the area of blocking with Brown and Hill now in year 3.

I do think we need to get a do everything TE next draft (Jack Endries from Texas).

Nice article Mike. I agree with everything except the last statement. I haven’t seen anyone compare the Tua Favorably to the tops QB’s. Which would imply that he is better than them. If I am the person you are throwing that dart at, then I have to correct you (again)… My point which you keep ignoring is that MOST QB’s have worse records against teams with winning records. I am not and have never been a Tua Stan. I just agree with MF13’s post yesterday. The TEAM shrinks in big situations. False starts followed by holding calls putting us at 2nd &20, 3rd & 25 followed by dropped passes or stuffed runs or the best of them all giving up by trying to throw screen passes to get 20 yards.

MIAMI GARDENS — The Miami Dolphins returned to the practice field Friday after an off day from drills Thursday.

    — LB Jordyn Brooks was the orange jersey practice player of the day at Friday drills. Brooks was consistent with how he played the run Friday.

    — RB Jaylen Wright was stripped of the football in the backfield as DT Zach Sieler blew up a run. The ball popped up in the air and OLB Bradley Chubb snagged it for the fumble recovery, with a chance to take it back the other way. Wright rebounded in red-zone drills, hitting a hole hard for a touchdown.

    — QB Tua Tagovailoa, in red-zone work, found Tyreek Hill for a 3-yard touchdown to the right pylon. The two hooked up for another score of the same distance, going to the other side.

    — New CB Jack Jones had a red-zone interception, covering WR Nick Westbrook-Ikhine on a throw from Zach Wilson. Wilson and Westbrook-Ikhine later looked to be working in tandem on a smooth Wilson pass over the middle off play action.

    — CB Storm Duck broke up a third-down pass from Tua to Hill.

    — TE Tanner Conner went up over S Jordan Colbert deep for as touchdown as Wilson lobbed it up for him. Contested in the air, and the bigger Conner tipped it to himself.

    — FB Alec Ingold got open behind OLB Jaelan Phillips on the first play of team drills, but Ingold dropped the pass from Tua.

    — RB De’Von Achane had a nice wide run to the left where Patrick Paul didn’t allow the edge to be sealed. Achane had a sizable gain on an end-around after a play fake for an inside run.

    — RB Alexander Mattison continues to hit holes with conviction. Players aren’t tackling to the ground, but it’d be a challenge for defenders to arm tackle him once he gets a head of steam.

    — Rookie RB Ollie Gordon II scored up the middle in red-zone work. While backup offensive linemen struggled, they worked well here.

    — Theo Wease skied for a touchdown catch in the back of the end zone from QB Quinn Ewers over CB BJ Adams. Ewers also threw a touchdown to TE Pharaoh Brown.

    — Wilson had Achane open for a touchdown inside the 5 but threw behind him. He rebounded with a tougher throw for a TD to WR Dee Eskridge in the back corner.

—DT Matt Dickerson had multiple tackles for loss Friday. The veteran is making a strong case to reclaim a roster spot.

    — OLB Grayson Murphy probably gets to Wilson, but Wilson used an extra second to roll and make a nice throw on the move to Erik Ezukanma. Murphy later batted down a WR screen to the outside by Ewers.

—OLB Quinton Bell blew up a TE screen and then pressured the quarterback once he had to go elsewhere. Bell also blew by a block in a 1-on-1 Friday.

—DT Zeek Biggers and McLendon combined for a solid run stuff.

    — In 1-on-1s in the trenches, LT Patrick Paul continues to impress. He held off OLB Bradley Chubb twice and later OLB Derrick McLendon while guiding OLB Chop Robinson up the backfield. He had a competitive rep against OLB Mohamed Kamara where he stonewalled him but may have then held him before driving him to the ground.

    — In WR-DB 1-on-1s in the red zone: CB Storm Duck was called for defensive holding in the end zone against Hill; WR Nick Westbrook-Ikhine caught two touchdowns on new CB Jack Jones; Jones also blanketed him another instance where they were matched up; Malik Washington caught a pair of touchdowns in 1s, one on Cornell Armstrong, despite his pass interference; Andrew Armstrong also won against Cornell Armstrong; Ethan Bonner was beat by both Wease and AJ Henning, but he had good coverage later against Henning; Tarik Black scored on Ethan Robinson.

    — C Aaron Brewer is still not dressing for practice, but he was seen stretching with the team for the first time. He also worked out on the side with a helmet on. Brewer was not placed on the physically-unable-to-perform list for his lower-body soft-tissue injury so he could still snap footballs to Tagovailoa.

    — TE Darren Waller (PUP) and S Ifeatu Melifonwu (non-football injury list) are yet to be activated.

    — CB Kendall Sheffield was back on the practice field, as coach Mike McDaniel said he would be, after missing one session Wednesday for undisclosed reasons. Safeties Ashtyn Davis and Dante Trader Jr., cornerback Isaiah Johnson, tight end Jalin Conyers and tackle Bayron Matos were not seen participating Friday. CB BJ Adams returned to practice in a red, non-contact jersey.

    — OLB Mohamed Kamara was seen walking under his own power but with a trainer to an ambulance just off the practice field.

    — New OL Jalen McKenzie exited Friday’s practice early.

    — Ewers started practice Friday by tossing a few footballs with fans in attendance and getting them to throw them back into a net on the practice field. He was flanked by newly returning QB Brett Gabbert in this effort. The Dolphins have rookies hype up the crowd to start practices open to fans. Stock up

Zach Sieler continues to shine as he has not been holding in as he seeks a new contract extension. He blew up a Wright run to force a fumble. He had a sack in the red-zone setting and was in on another where Phillips and Chubb also got home. And he consistently commands extra attention, also excelling in 1-on-1 drills. Pay the man. Stock down

Offensive line depth. After the first team, Dolphins linemen are consistently getting blown up by second and third units of Miami’s defensive fronts, both on the interior and on the edge. Undrafted rookie Addison West again had a high snap in Friday drills. It’s becoming a theme for him.

MIAMI GARDENS — The Miami Dolphins had their eighth training camp practice of the summer at Baptist Health Training Complex on Friday, August 1.

Cornerback Kendall Sheffield, who is in the mix for playing time, returned to practice.

Linebacker Jordyn Brooks wore the orange jersey as player of the last practice.

So too did Tyreek Hill, who missed the previous practice for personal reasons.

BJ Adams is in a red jersey.

Chad ‘Ochocinco’ Johnson was at practice, chatting up GM Chris Grier.Miami Dolphins training camp practice 8 observations

    • Dolphins running backs did up-down drills during practice. This is a form of self-discipline Miami has been demonstrating all camp.
    • Matt Dickerson had a good rep against center Addison West. Dickerson is probably on the right side of the roster bubble at the moment. Later in practice, Dickerson had another good play against Ollie Gordon II.

Patrick Paul steadily improving for Miami Dolphins

    • Terron Armstead on the field watching a great battle between Patrick Paul and Chop Robinson. We’ll call it a draw. Or slight edge to Paul.
    • Patrick Paul had a pancake block on Mo Kamara.
    • Fullback Alec Ingold had a drop.
    • RB Alexander Mattison continues to have a very solid camp. He appears to be faster than anticipated.

Zach Sieler forces fumble at Dolphins camp

    • Zach Sieler stripped Jaylen Wright and Bradley Chubb recovered.
    • Mo Kamara has left the field with a possible injury.
    • Theo Wease had a nice grab from Quinn Ewers.

New CB Jack Jones flashes with INT at Dolphins camp

    • Jack Jones had an interception of Zach Wilson.
    • Tanner Conner had a nice touchdown grab from Zach Wilson off a tipped ball.
    • Grayson Murphy had a batted pass.
    • Julian Hill and Tyreek Hill caught red zone touchdown passes from Tua Tagovailoa.
    • Zach Wilson threw behind De’Von Achane in the red zone.

Rock – I always forget to mention when we have these discussions about Tua is that no matter what the team does with few exceptions, his play is not competitive in those games against winning teams. I feel like Mahomes, Burrow, Jackson and Allen keep their team in the game. Last year against Buffalo in Buffalo (On an unseasonably warm day if my memory serves me), Tua played a really good game against the Bills. my problem with Tua is that most of them, I’m not looking it up right now, he plays awful. Way below his play against the lesser teams. It shouldn’t be so night and day, and that drives me crazy.

    • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

      “you feel like….”

Yeah, I get that. To your point some of his worst performances have been in “big moments” But to be fair to him, sometimes a dropped pass is on the WR. Sometimes the three false starts in a row are too much to overcome with a fucking screen pass called by the coach.

Buffalo has done an incredible job in recent years matching up against KC. Josh is 4-1 against Mahomes in the regular season the last 5 years. (Why do they play every year?)

      • bookman11's avatar bookman11 says:

They play every year because they are both always 1st in their respective divisions, and then every 3 years they have to play anyway because of divisional to division match ups.

I agree with BBM’s assessment of 2023, derailed by MMs ineptitude and injuries

we weren’t quite there yet as far as having a complete team, some parts missing seem to be there today, others like CBs are now gone

I don’t buy the Tua came back against the Ravens narrative, because of their DBs being out

those same DBs, that played well for 3 quarters were the same guys, that played in the 4th

Tua/Tyreek still had to make the plays and no one said anything about Jish Allen beating our depleted team in the playoffs or other games

  10. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

OLB Mohamed Kamara was seen walking under his own power but with a trainer to an ambulance just off the practice field.

I hope Mo is OK. I hate hearing about players leaving by ambulance. (even if he is 4th or 5th on the depth chart)

it’s easy to hold players accountable when you have the right players??? Oh boy.

    • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

That was definitely a shot at Ramsey (and probably ‘Reek) There was some entitlement issues there. We don’t get to hear about internal discipline, but like MM said before how many times can you fine a guy for being late if the guy doesn’t care about the fines?

Ramsey was a malcontent when Grief traded for him. He was a malcontent and trouble maker when the Rams traded for him from Jax and he was still a malcontent when we traded for him from the Rams.

  12. Randy's avatar Randy says:

Can we hear about the compete level at practices? Are guys getting kicked off the practice field if they’re screwing up? Are players being held accountable when they don’t do what they’re supposed to do? Are guys competing with some edge? I don’t want to hear the same old shit. I want to hear that things are uncomfortable and challenging. Combat the soft. That’s how you develop toughness as a coach. Demand accountability and punish guys by taking away what they want…to play.

  13. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    Rock,

I think it’s lame if he actually was taking a shot at a former player. That’s bush league. But, my issue is more that discipline doesn’t depend on the person being disciplined. He completely disregards or doesn’t understand HIS role as the disciplinarian. He’s the one in charge. He’s the one who determines how a guy is disciplined. Are you seriously telling me you can’t figure out how to discipline certain guys? Isn’t that your job to figure it out? I’m floored by some of the things this guy says.

    • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Randy, I can only really point to myself. I was totally undisciplined as a young man. It was not because my dad didn’t beat my ass every week (sometimes 2 or 3 times a week) It’s not that he didn’t take away every single possession I had. It’s not that he didn’t lock me in my room except for meals, and then only to get my mean and clean my dishes. No, it was that I DIDN’T FUCKING CARE. How can you control someone who refuses to be controlled? The whole “my game check is bigger than your yearly salary” attitude?

I don’t know. I’m not giving MM a pass, Just arguing like usual. LOL

      pretty clueless far too often

Generally when you are over the top in one area, you lack in another (not football related) MM seems to be lacking in leading

he breaks the first rule of leading, you aren’t there to make friends , if you do ok, but it shouldn’t influence your leading

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I agree. I take it as he feels these guys are professionals and can self-discipline. I think that is horseshit. These guys are in their early to mid 20’s. They need discipline from a leader outside the locker room.

  14. markeyh's avatar markeyh says:

Mike McDaniel is who he is; he is not a disciplinarian coach; to try and be one will never work. So the only way for him to have success is to have players on the roster who are not a problem

    Rock,

Well, I guess I’m talking about a job situation. I’m a son and a father, so I understand those issues! 16. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

agreed, he can’t be a disciplinarian, but he can hold players accountable and stop trying to be everyone’s friend

  17. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

“No one said anything about Josh Allen beating our depleted secondary”. No one has to because there are 50 other games you can point to. Tua stans hang their hats on 1 fucking game against the Ravens 3 years ago when their entire secondary was out. Wouldn’t it be nice if there were 20 more games you could back that one up with? There aren’t. He just doesn’t elevate his play enough times in those big moments. Josh Allen could have a 3rd and 23 and he’ll take the ball, and run that fucker for 25 yards, or run around and keep the play alive and find someone open. His stats are never eye popping, but that boy wins games. Tua is the opposite, eye popping stats, but can’t win or play well enough to win in those big games

    • markeyh's avatar markeyh says:

I agree that Tua has not delivered in games against playoff-caliber teams, but to put that all on him is unfair. We have a head coach who is going into his fourth season as a head coach and has made his fair share of mistakes. I am hopeful that this is the year that it all comes together, and Miami wins the majority of its games against playoff-caliber teams. The schedule is in our favor because we have our toughest opponents at home this year.

If Miami is who I think they are, they will win those home games

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

No one is Josh Allen, but Tua did beat him the week before the Ravens win

the end of 2023 showed us the Fins weren’t ready to compete with the top teams, while having key injuries and no to step up m, when Hill/Waddle are taken away

there’s an AI video where Aceperhead showed how bad the team in general has played against good teams, you seem to only be focusing on Tua’s playing in those games

MIAMI GARDENS — It can be hard to know exactly how many grains of truth there are in some of Tyreek Hill’s comments.

But the Miami Dolphins’ wide receiver seemed to indicate after the eighth training camp practice of the summer that finally knows the offense.

Entering Year 4 with the Dolphins.

“I’m gonna’ be completely honest,” Hill said. “I didn’t understand the offense for the first three years of me being here. But this year, I feel like Coach (Bobby Slowik) has explained it a lot.”

we filled the holes we needed to fill. Mullins in CF, Helsley as the 8th inning setup man and closer when Diaz can’t go, Rogers and Soto to bridge the gap between the starters and late relievers. Couldn’t have done much better.

the Padres knocked it out of the park though…

    #10 CB Jermod McCoy

    #42 TE Eli Stowers

    #74 OT Blake Miller

    #83 CB Jyaire Hill

  37. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

You know I want McCoy but Jyaire Hill is an interesting CB prospect also. He’s a big 6’2 corner who runs sub 4.4.

Tankathon keeps up with our needs double downing on CB.

  38. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

TE Eli Stowers is an interesting pick. He’s a smaller TE at 6’4 235 and 4.55 forty, but also ranks as one of the better blockers in the 2026 draft. He’s the 2nd best blocker in the preseason top 10.

Why do you have an issue with the GM?

He’s done a very good job. He’s not perfect, but after 25 years of mediocrity, we are now a playoff-contending team. Not sure what more we can ask of a GM???

The Dolphins have made the playoffs 2 out of the last 3 years, and if it weren’t for the fact that we lost Tua for 6 games last year and played without our two best pass rushers, Miami WOULD have made the playoffs last year.

Yes, most likely with another early exit, but they have made progress as a team, and I expect, if healthy, they will once again win 10-12 games.

  43. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Markey – this team is built with straw. Teams like the Chiefs, Bills, Ravens are all contenders and only way they miss out on the playoffs is if everything goes wrong. With our team, every single thing needs to go right in order for us to make the playoffs and win one

So catching balls and all that is cool, but I want to win and I want to be — I’m going to be the best blocking tight end this year. Everything else is a bonus and if I get a couple balls, I’ll thank God and be grateful, just keep winning.”

“I’ve never been in a system on the outside zone where everybody is kinda connected,” he said. “I’ve been more in a dual man scheme where it’s just me and me on a guy. So, it’s all technique right now and I still got that in my bag as far as ‘just will.’ I’m just trying to hone in on the technique and I know when game day come around that the pure will and pure aggression and me beating my man, that’s just in me. Once I pair that with the technique, it’s going to be quite the scene.”

He is not as good as Sieler. Though, Sieler is 3 years older (30 next month), I wonder what his camp is looking at.

  53. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I was looking at a chart the other day and I have no clue how they come up with the numbers. That said, Sieler played in 15 of 17 games last year. Of those 15 games, 4 of them his statistical performance was not worth what he is getting paid. On the other hand, 10 of those games his statistical performance was above what he is getting paid. In fact, 3 of those 10 games, he was worth double what he was getting paid. The 15th game he was worth what he is getting paid.

Basically, based on 2024 salaries, the chart said he was worth around 14m per season. Salaries go up every year so say 15m per year. I could live with that but think his camp might want more.

Also, I know stats aren’t the whole picture either, but it was an interesting tool. I think one of those cap sites have something similar, maybe OTC.

  54. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

BTW, in the 30-27 road loss at the Bills last year, that was one of the games Sieler missed. Same with the 28-27 loss to Arizona. That was the other game he missed.

  57. Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

what pisses me off about the Sieler situation is that he’s a good guy, a team-first player who isn’t bitching about his contract when he has been SEVERELY underpaid. Then you have Tyreek and Ramsey who were making a ton of money, then wanted more after some of the other WRs and CBs got new contracts and were making more than them. Wake up Grier.

    Practice 9:

Tackle Austin Jackson and cornerback Cam Smith both missed practice, with Smith spotted working with a trainer on the side. Smith wore a compression sleeve around his right leg for the previous two practices.

Center Aaron Brewer was dressed for practice for the first time in training camp, though his participation understandably was limited. He wore a compression sleeve around his right leg.

Cornerback Isaiah Johnson was back at practice after being out Friday.

Along with the three players on injury lists — Liam Eichenberg, Waller and Ifeatu Melifonwu — tackle Bayron Matos, TE Jalin Conyers, rookie safety Dante Trader Jr. and safety Ashtyn Davis continue to miss practice.

Rookie cornerback Jason Marshall Jr. left practice early to work on the side with a trainer.

Fuck! – Linebacker Jaelan Phillips wore the orange jersey as the player of the day Friday. Phillips didn’t finish practice, though, after sustained an apparent knee injury. He stayed on the ground after a play in 11-on-11s, talked with trainers, then stood on the sideline before jogging briefly to seemingly test the knee. He then walked over to a spot between the two fields. That will be a situation to monitor, no doubt.

Former Dolphins tackle Terron Armstead again was a visitor at practice. He was spotted giving Patrick Paul some pointers after the lineman-vs.-rusher drill.

The first competitive drill again involves one-on-ones, and we once again chose to focus on the offensive line versus front seven players because it’s a better evaluation tool than a DB or LB trying to cover a receiver for half the field.

It looked like the offensive line overall did well in this exercise, with Patrick Paul once again standing out. Kion Smith also had a nice performance lining up left tackle.

Kenneth Grant ended up pushing Jonah Savaiinaea to the ground, but that came after a few seconds and might not have been enough to disrupt the quarterback.

James Daniels also continued to be strong in this drill.

Matthew Butler might have been the most effective of the pass rushers in this competition.

On the first snap of 11-on-11, Storm Duck did a great job of sealing the edge and Willie Gay Jr. rushed through the line to stuff an end-around by Tyreek Hill.

The first pass of the day is a Tua completion to Jaylen Waddle against zone coverage.

Tua had a nice completion to Malik Washington near the sideline over the outstretched hands of Gay.

Zach Wilson’s first pass was a deep shot to Tahj Washington, but he was well covered by impressive rookie free agent John Saunders Jr. and it went incomplete.

Chop Robinson got to Zach Wilson for a sack, but he committed the sin of getting Wilson to the ground after falling down close to him.

Quinn Ewers had a long completion to tight end Tanner Conner across the field after he rolled out to his left. Safeties Jordan Colbert and Saunders were in coverage, but Conner was wide open.

Cornell Armstrong came from behind to break up a Ewers pass intended for A.J. Henning, though the ball took too long to get there.

Malik Washington had a nice seal block on Bradley Chubb to spring Jaylen Wright for a nice gain.

Zach Sieler quickly got to Tua to disrupt a pass play.

Fullback Alec Ingold sealed a defender inside to allow Ollie Gordon II to easily get outside.

Mo Kamara pushed back Ryan Hayes to disrupt a running play.

Bradley Chubb’s pursuit of Tua led to him throwing the ball into the ground.

Tyrel Dodson Jr. made a beeline to Tua to stop a play.

De’Von Achane dropped an easy short pass from Tua.

Cornerback Jack Jones had his left knee taped during practice.

Chubb beat the block of Pharaoh Brown to meet Achane in the backfield.

Ewers had a nice competion over the middle to Monaray Baldwin.

Tua with an errant throw after Minkah Fitzpatrick pressure. Offense not looking sharp today.

Matthew Butler got in Tua’s face on the next play to force another incompletion. Might have been a sack in a game setting.

Tua does a nice job of stepping up to avoid Bradley Chubb outside and hits Tyreek Hill across the field.

Willie Gay Jr. picked off a Zach Wilson pass when it went off the hands of Tanner Conner in the open field. Wasn’t a great throw, but still should have been caught.

KJ Britt’s pressure forced a throw-away by Wilson.

The Dolphins worked on two-minute situations, and Tua started off by leading the offense to a field goal after a couple of completions to Conner, though Tua dropped a shotgun snap.

Jordan Colbert had back-to-back plays where he got a free run at Wilson.

There was a flag on the play, but it doesn’t nullify what Patrick Paul did on a screen to Waddle when he ran down the field and started shoving defenders out of the way. Impressive stuff for a dude having a great camp.

Probably should mention here that, yes, there have been an awful lot of flags. Just got one for an ineligible receiver downfield.

We’ve got a third consecutive plays with a flag, and on this one Saunders ripped the ball away from Jaylen Wright at the end of a play.

Wilson had a nice strike to Nick Westbrook-Ikhine from about 20 yards out.

Ewers had a throw across his body while rolling to his left to Theo Wease Jr. after Zeek Biggers bit hard on a play fake.

Ewers had a dart to Baldwin on a slant for a completion despite tight coverage.

Great protection, but Tua can’t find anybody open and then throws the ball away.

Tua with a nice completion in traffic to Conner, who’s been very busy.

Gay stepped in front of a Wilson pass to Conner, but dropped what should have been his second interception of the day.

Tahj Washington scooped up a very low throw by Wilson near the sideline for a completion.

Alexander Mattison had a long run after getting a hole through the middle and then bouncing it outside.

Mike Hilton quickly got to Wilson up the middle.

At the start of the next end-of-game situation, Tua throws the ball into the ground when he can’t find anybody open.

After what becomes the final play, Dee Eskride grabs the back of his right thigh after an incompletion from Wilson with great coverage by Isaiah Johnson. Not a good way to end practice.

Given the Dolphins’ recent history with offensive line injuries, it’s important to keep an eye on the team’s depth. One interesting development during training camp has been the emergence of Kion Smith.

Smith has spent most of training camp working at guard, but he worked at tackle for the first time Saturday, and he looked promising during the 1-on-1 period. Smith tore his ACL during the Dolphins’ first preseason game last year and missed the entire 2024 season.

  68. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

In the aftermath of the disappointing report involving starting right tackle Austin Jackson, the Miami Dolphins brought in five offensive linemen to their facility for a tryout Saturday.

The list featured two veterans with a lot of starting experience, tackles Chris Hubbard and Germain Ifedi. The others were Zack Bailey, Yodny Cajuste and David Sharpe.

Ifedi was a first-round pick of the Seattle Seahawks in the 2016 NFL draft and has started 90 NFL games, including seven for the Cleveland Browns last season.

Hubbard, meanwhile, has 61 starts among his 102 regular season games in a career that began as a rookie free agent in 2014. He has played for the Pittsburgh Steelers, Cleveland Browns, Tennessee Titans and most recently the New York Giants, for whom he played eight games with three starts last season.

Sharpe is a former fourth-round pick of the Raiders with 45 career games and six starts. He last played in the NFL in 2023 with the Carolina Panthers. Bailey has appeared in two regular season games since entering the NFL as a rookie free agent in 2019, one with the Chargers in 2022 and one with the New York Jets last season. Finally, Cajuste hasn’t played since the 2022 season when he started three games for the New England Patriots, who had made him a third-round pick in the 2019 draft.

  86. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

It’s never been about Tua’s ability, for me. It’s always about availability.

Has Tua had some stinker games, yes. All of the top QB’s do. As Tim says, it’s a team game. Goff had a 5 INT game vs the Texans and the Lions still won. He also stunk up their playoff game with 3 INT’s in a loss. Mahomes, Allen and Jackson all have stinker games but their teams pulls them through for the W. Hell, Josh Allen had 127 yards passing, 0 TD’s and only 20 yards rushing in their playoff win over the Ravens last season.

I think we could go back to old blog post losses when Tua was in the game and find most of the bitching was about injuries, inability of the D to get a stop or MM’s play calling. Yeah, we will find some Tua bitching also. lol

Good “teams” win. Other Teams not so much. With the games Joe Burrow puts up we should be talking future HOF but we are not because he is on the Bengals.
