2025 Season – Game 2 – Patriots @ Dolphins

It’s Week 2 in the NFL, so it’s far too early to be a turning point of the season. On the other hand, the Miami Dolphins need a really solid effort this weekend at home against The New England Patriots. The Patriots are 0-1 coming off of a loss at home to the Las Vegas Raiders. A lot of experts felt the New England Patriots had a really good offseason and made a lot of improvements to the roster, in adition to adding a new Head Coach in former Patriots Linebacker Mike Vrabel. There is hope that their QB will take step up in his 2nd season with the Patriots. They drafted one of the best OT’s available in the ’25 Draft in LT Will Campbell. They added in RD 2 an athletic RB in TreVeyon Henderson to the more physical running style of Rhamondre Stevenson. The Patriots, like the Dolphins are 0-1, but the Patriots were in the game the entire game while the Miami Dolphins just got embarrassed all game long.

Unless this game ends in a tie, one of these 2 teams is going to be 0-2. The Patriots have a new Head Coach with a young QB while the Dolphins are in year 4 with HC Mike McDaniel and year 6 with QB Tua Tagovailoa. There is no question as to which team needs the “W” more than the other, but I’d simplify it by saying the Dolphins need to resemble a legitimate NFL team this Sunday, win or lose. They can’t have an effort that in any way looks like what they put out last week against the Indianapolis Colts where they got blown out 33-8 and even the score doesn’t accurately represent the carnage. This organization has been talking about their new culture for months now and some fans ate it up like crack. If what they did last week is the “new” culture, that culture won’t be around much longer, and I’ll be quite thankful for that!

Unfortunately for the Dolphins, the injuries never cease here. Yes, every team goes through injuries in the NFL but the Dolphins lost their starting RG after a play or two. RG James Daniels who I had doubts about due to coming off an achilles injury in 2024 is OUT, and not because of his achilles, but a pectoral injury. In addition, right next to him, RT Austin Jackson will also be OUT this Sunday. So 2 plays is all we get from our new and improved O-line. OL Kion Smith will replace RG James Daniels and OT Larry Borom will replace RT Austin Jackson. Obviously, that’s not ideal, and Mike Vrabel is from the Belichick Coaching Tree and that means defense is a priority, and physical play is what they’re all about. Our guys will no doubt be tested. After all, this Dolphins team told us they’re not soft despite fromer players insinuating just that. I’d like to see this team be the more physical team on Sunday and smack the Patriots down.

The team held a players own meeting after the poor showing Week 1. What exactly that means is unclear, but it’s Week 2 and you’re excluding the HC from a meeting? Not necessarily a good look from any perspective. What have y’all been doing up until this point? QB Tua Tagovailoa has been ornery answering questions and seems angry with some of the reporters questions. Answer those questions on the field young man, stop whining, bitching about what reporters said after you shit the bed on opening day! You don’t appreciate the negativity, play as well as your undying supporters think you’re capable of, like some Top 5 God of a QB! It will undoubtedly make the post game interviews much more palatable.

You want some good news? The Dolphins have owned the Patriots defeating them twice last season, 15-10 in Week 5 and then an ass whooping Week 12 34-15. In 2023 it was the same, we defeated the Patriots 24-17 in Week 2, and then 31-17 in Week 8. Despite all the offseason hype for New England, history is in our favor, and add in we’ll be wearing all white which means the Patriots will be wearing their dark navy jerseys in the Florida heat. Hopefully it’s a scorcher. It’s supposed to be 88 degrees and very humid but there’s a threat of rain in the afternoon (No way, not in Miami!). I don’t need the Dolphins to wipe the field with the Patriots and honestly I don’t need them to win, but they have to look significantly better than they did last week and look like a professional team that has real ideas about being contenders for a playoff spot.

Besides the 2 injuries on the O-line, there’s more injury news as well, some good, some bad. RB Jaylen Wright is trending in the right direction to be active. NT Benito Jones however is the opposite, and he may be OUT and replaced by rookie DT Zeek Biggers. I swear from this point on I’m not discussing the TE that shall not be discussed until he actually suits up and plays. I’ve wasted not nearly as much time and resources and draft picks as the Miami Dolphins have, but his time is done with me until he plays. WR Jaylen Waddle is QUESTIONABLE. CB Storm Duck has not practiced so it’s looking as if he’ll be OUT. As I mentioned earlier, RT Austin Jackson is in the same boat as Storm Duck and Benito Jones. Every NFL team gets hit with injuries but our team just gets obliterated by them.

Last week we ran the ball 9 times with our RB’s 7 rushes for Achane and only 2 for the rookie ollie Gordon who’s supposed to bring the physicality to the offense. I’d love to see Ollie Gordon get a bunch of carries although it’s difficult to steal carries from RB De’Von Achane, and if RB Jaylen Wright is active, gosh, how do you split up the 3-4 carries between them? I know that Achane’s herculean effort on that 4th down swing pass last week is the only reason we cored an actual TD last week. Mike McDaniel calls a swing pass on 4th and 11, and Achane avoids and eludes at least 3-4 would be tacklers immediately and scores. That’s a shit call, sorry! It’s amazing that he scored but it’s embarrassing that it’s what he called. I hope today we have a more run heavy game plan, take a little pressure off of #1 who is unraveling already due to the scrutiny of being a franchise QB that doesn’t play like one.

Lets see the defense, the front 7 that is allegedly the stregth of this team show up! We brought in veteran LB/DE Matt Judon in to join Bradley Chubb, Jaelan Phillips and Chop Robinson. The Colts had possession of the football for over 38 minutes. Not good! Of course Tua gifting the Colts defense 3 times didn’t help the situation, but our defense needs to make an impact too! Bradley Chubb got one sack and that was it for this defense. No forced fumbles or INT’s or anything really. We were jacked on both sides of the ball, and Danny Jones looked fantastic, a 115.1 rating, need I say more? Our Top 5 QB needs to rehabilitate his usual high rating which now stands at 51.7. Oh, forgot to mention Jaylen Waddle is injured with a shoulder injury. Did that happen watching the Colts go up and down the field all day on us? Rubbernecking injury perhaps? Jaylen Waddle did catch 4 passes for 30 yards, maybe 30 realy tough on the shoulder yards. Hopefully he’s better this week. I’m loving the new culture by the ways, but these boo boos we keep getting are just so nasty and unfortunate!

MM’s offense is only complicated in that he puts tons of motion in his plays. You can get rid of motion without really changing the plays. Just do less motion. It’s not working anyway.

It would be interesting to see what Tua did in a more traditional offense. He’s really a pocket passer. Maybe they just don’t feel the protection is there. I see a whole lot of QBs under pressure, so I’m not sure why we’re any different. I guess part of the issue is that we were built for speed.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Tua calls the motion himself, alot, because he can’t read a D, it helps him determine man vs zone

we were told this was the year he was going to figure it out

how did MM do in that department?

  2. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    steve,

Motion is used for a number of things. Identifying coverage is the most basic and really good QBs don’t even need it all the time to identify what’s coming.

I haven’t seen either game so far, so I can’t comment on what they’ve done so far.

  3. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

We weren’t so far behind early in the game so as to abandon our running game. Instead, we passed the ball 32 times and ran it 15 times, lost the TOP by another wide margin 33:45 to 26:15. This once again resulted in our Defense getting gassed: they couldn’t get off the field.

We currently have the 4th worst running game in the NFL, averaging 69.5 yards per game… that’s not going to bring 8 in-the-box to drop 2 high Safeties, though Tua did his part yesterday (minus the bone-headed INT in the 4th quarter).

10 penalties yesterday shows me a severe lack of discipline, though the zebras were certainly flag-happy (12 penalties for the Patsies*).

Too many mistakes in critical sits on both sides of the ball. We couldn’t get the 1st down when we needed it on Offense, and gave up the 1st down when we needed a stop on 3rd (and 4th) down on Defense.

    I don’t believe we trust the right side of our O-Line, either… I know I wouldn’t.

  4. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I see the complete O-Line grades for our game yesterday aren’t up over at PFF. I’ll share once posted.

  8. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    M13,

You always talk about a 2 high safety system being the problem and the answer is just to run more. First, every team sees plenty of that sort of coverage throughout a season. It’s used a lot by teams over the course of a season in different situations . Offenses and QBs are expected to adjust to it. Second, there are other ways to adjust to it than just running the ball. Tua gets no grace for not being able to play effectively against a 2H look. QBs are asked to do it all the time. Yes, running better helps. Having a balanced offense helps, but it’s not the only way to skin that rabbit. Neither MM nor Tua has shown an ability to compete and adjust.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I’m just talking about the simplicities, not the complicated facets of the problem at hand. There’s also another simple method to stretch opposing Defenses to be able to run… THROW IT DEEP!

I don’t care if it’s even a throw-away play by intentionally overthrowing your WR by 10 yards… STRETCH them by showing the threat.

You’re right that there will always be sits where a QB MUST face 2 deep Safeties. And you’re also right that neither Coach McD nor Tua have shown an ability to compete and adjust.

But my gosh, we can’t seem to run — nor willing to run — to keep Defenses off balance against our Offense.

  9. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

    Jonah Savaiinaea has been horrible

    Bad for even a rookie

  10. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    M13,

I’m just saying. The defenses we face aren’t the problem. I’m not even sure we’re constantly seeing 2H coverage anymore. I don’t think this offense scares anybody. Get Tua off his first read, and you’re golden.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Well according to Coach McD and OC Frank Smith, Tua has absolutely no problem when Tua’s first read is taken away.

Not sure I agree with them… I’m more prone to agree with you.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I’m sure there’s a certain degree of PANIC if Tua doesn’t get it out in under 2.2 seconds, due to a lackluster O-Line and Tua’s propensity to get concussed.

        It’s a problem.

  11. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

    Randy,

Here’s another aspect. Once Tua gets flushed out of the pocket… and this system being a timing system… he’s then at a different point on the field which will foul up the timing system and where he needs to place the ball.

Not to mention, he’s a smaller QB who probably has problems finding throwing lanes with the BIG UGLIES in front of him.

This is certainly less than ideal… especially when ya can’t trust your O-Line to pass-protect.

  12. ElephantRider's avatar ElephantRider says:

Tua plays like he doesn’t give a shit. His pressers are like he doesn’t give a shit. There is no fire on this team. This starts with the coach and has infected everything. Nobody cares, Grier paid them all a fortune so why bother anymore.

  13. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    M13,

I’m only guessing, but I’d guess most DCs try to disrupt the timing of a timing offense as their first goal. How they want to do it is a choice. Playing deep coverage against us is more about containing the speed. I haven’t seen the games, so I don’t know what’s going on this year.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I absolutely agree with ya! Once Tua gets flushed out of the pocket, he gets in trouble. That’s where most of his INTs come from.

Just as I do not like zone-heavy Defenses, I do not like timing-based Offenses.

You know what you’re talking about, even though you haven’t seen any of the games. #Respect!

We’re going to be drafting a new QB in ’26 under a new regime. Tua is one hit away from becoming scrambled eggs… like Trent Green before him.

  14. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    M13,

I’ve said from day one that Tua is a pocket passer. He’s got a little mobility but it’s not his game. I don’t want him scrambling, and I don’t think he likes it just watching him. It’s why I was calling to get 2 really good guards in front of him from day one. Do you remember? I wanted Jahri Evans 2.0! Lol

Tua needs a solid pocket, so he can step forward and make those precise timing throws. If I’m the defense I’m feeling good if I get him moving sideways.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

      BINGO!

An ex-girlfriend of mine was a fellow classmate of Jahri Evans. He was a really good guy, according to her. Never met him myself. Always wanted our Phins to draft Jahri.

So when the Saints drafted my guy T-STEAD out of Arkansas Pine-Bluff, I was like “WOW!”! Jahri Evans next to T-STEAD?!! They were incredible together as Saints.

Anyway… I digress. Like you, I always want a solid pocket by which our QB can throw from. And yes, Tua is a pocket-passer, not much of a scrambler.

  15. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    M13,

I can remember your love for Armstead and chatting about him on the newspaper site.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Thanks, man! Too bad we acquired him so late/unhealthy in his career. He was still a STUD for us, but just not the same as he once was in NOLA.

  16. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

    Randy,

I’m pretty sure this is Coach McD’s last stand…. and he likely won’t survive the season, IMO. The new HC will want to hitch his wagon to his own QB. Tua will be on the outs as well, contingent on when it’s most viable to either trade or cut him regarding his contract.

I also don’t believe Chris Grier is going to survive this.

    MikeE,

I am! I get excited about being able to watch ANY Dolphins game since I usually don’t. Yeah, it might be ugly, but I’ll watch every second. I haven’t gotten to see a damn thing but highlights so far.

If these guys are professionals I expect to see them playing their asses off. If they don’t, I think that’s really, really bad in game 3. I’d start to worry about the effect this locker room could have on our young talent.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Funny Randy, I’m so beyond worrying about anything other than Grier and McDaniel not getting canned by Ross. Not worried how bad we suck, I fully expect it

Ross WTF are you waiting for?

MM taking so long to get plays in quickly just shows how inept he is, that in his 4th year he hasn’t figured it out yet is baffling

  40. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Just so you all know, especially M, because I think deep down you still love Tua. I think I hate the people that concoct excuses more than I hate the player himself. He is what he is, he’s a less than average athlete with a less than average arm who throws accurate passes short to medium depth, and one who is beyond fragile health wise. I’m on X a fair amount and the excuses never cease. Never! They will defend him until he’s gone, it’s never his fault. I recall you bringing up baseball as an analogy, so it’s like Tua could pitch 7 strong innings and then in the 8th walk the first batter and then give up a HR and we’d lose 2-0, everyone would blame the offense, the catcher, the manager, anyone but him. Last night with the game on the line, just like Tua had on Sunday, Baker Mayfield’s Bucs were down because the Texans took the lead 19-14 and left the Bucs with 2:04 left in the game. FG doesn’t do shit, have to score a TD. Mayfield led a masterful drive, some really clutch throws and a very athletic, elusive move to get out of a sack that probably would have had Tua OUT for the season and turned it into a run for a first down and more, huge play. I don’t blame Tua for everything, lord knows I hate Grier and McDaniel because they suck, but Tua had his opportunity to be great and he failed. It was all there for him, he just had to make the plays, but he very rarely steps up and comes through. I know some of you are ready to throw the Ravens game at me, was that even in this century? lol

  41. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

what we’ve seen in the AFC playoffs over the last several years is the team with the QB, that can take over the game in the 4th qtr wins in 1 score games

I think BBM likes Steve Spagnuolo to be the next HC.

He doesn’t look it but he is older and been around the game on the defensive side a long time.

He has participated in seven Super Bowls, six as a defense coordinator, winning one with the Giants and three with the Chiefs. He is the only coordinator (offense or defense) in NFL history to win a Super Bowl with two different franchises and the only one to win four Super Bowls in that role.

I think he would be a Dolphins fan fav as his Giants defense helped beat the undefeated Patriots in 2007 SB.

Question is whether he would be up to starting from scratch.

That said, the homer in BBM really likes Indiana HC Curt Cignetti. He’s turned every program around that he has been to. He always has his team ready to play with a good game plan. In 15 years as an HC, he has never had a loosing record even when rostering lesser talent.

I was just honestly ready to get back in the game.”

Just so you all know, especially M, because I think deep down you still love Tua. I think I hate the people that concoct excuses more than I hate the player himself. He is what he is, he’s a less than average athlete with a less than average arm who throws accurate passes short to medium depth, and one who is beyond fragile health wise…

    ————-

At this moment in time, I still believe that Tua is not THE problem. As Randy and I agreed yesterday afternoon, yes, he certainly has his limitations. Rush Tua out of the pocket, and there can be problems being he’s not a mobile QB and he’s out of position in this timing-based Offense.

That being stated, he’s also not THE answer. What’s my #1 reason for saying he’s not the answer? Because we can’t build around a QB who is one hit away from becoming scrambled eggs… as JT famously stated about Trent Green.

Yeah, I still luv Tua, but even I know that his time is nearly up. That’s me being a REALIST, even if I come off as a homer for Tua by recognizing his talent and achievements.

I personally believe Tua will never be a big-time gamer at this point in his career. Why? Again, his fragility after sustaining so many concussions. He’s been instructed to play it safe and to not take chances. His availability is priority #1, and he can’t help the team if he’s riding the pines. GM Grier even told us about this matter in the offseason… so we know Tua (AS INSTRUCTED) is playing not to get hurt.

Tua is NOT the sole reason we lost on Sunday, not even close. He kept us in the game to the last, threw for over 300 yards, 2 TDs, and had a 115.5 passer rating. None too shabby when the Patsies* knew we couldn’t run the ball and passed at a 2:1 ratio.

We’re stockpiling picks for the ’26 Draft with a purpose: we’re likely going to move up for the best possible QB for the new HC. That’s JMO, but I very much feel it.

From Heckman’s Week 3 bold predictions piece:

Josh Allen has more rushing yards than Tua Tagovailoa has passing yards: This matchup is set up perfectly for something wild like this to actually happen. The Bills have the league’s top passing defense through two weeks and are giving up just 124.0 yards per game.

Meanwhile, Josh Allen’s career-high in rushing yards (135) did, in fact, come against the Dolphins back in 2018. With Miami being a bottom-8 team against the run, look for Allen to go wild and, well, the Dolphins continue being a mess.”

Mike McDaniel’s ‘blessing’ admission to Dolphins facing Bills on short week

Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel speaks on how facing the Bills on a short week after losing to the Patriots is a “blessing.”

By Zachary Weinberger Sep 16, 2025 at 4:21 PM ET

Miami Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel looks on against the New England Patriots in the fourth quarter at Hard Rock Stadium.

As the Miami Dolphins suffered a loss to the New England Patriots on Sunday afternoon, the team doesn’t have much time to reflect on the game, as this is a short week before they take on the Buffalo Bills on Thursday Night Football. After another fourth-quarter disaster from the Dolphins, the season seems to be in flux with the threat of falling to 0-3 on the year, but head coach Mike McDaniel would speak on the benefit of the upcoming outing.

When facing an opponent like Buffalo, there’s no denying that it will be a tough one as the team features top quarterback Josh Allen, especially with the contest on their home field. Still, McDaniel would say to the media on Monday that it is a “blessing” since coming off another disappointing loss, “you have no time to think about anything else” on a short week, according to The Miami Herald.

“Your focus is super clear and pretty obvious,” McDaniel said. “After a loss, it can be a blessing because you have no time to think about anything else. The team understands that every moment you think about anything but the opponent will serve you in the worst [way]. It’s important guys are solely focused on the Bills.”

Dolphins’ Mike McDaniel on facing the Bills on TNF

As the Dolphins suffered from self-inflicted wounds in the loss to the Patriots, the game featured the team going down 12-0 early, and while they would play well down the stretch, key plays in the fourth quarter became the catalyst. After an exciting punt return touchdown to give them the lead, Miami lost it immediately on a kickoff return score on top of the final two possessions, featuring a Tua Tagovailoa pick and poor offensive line play.

“We have to tighten up our football entirely, we can’t wait until the second half to get a stop, we can’t have a monumental special teams play negated by a monumental special teams play,” McDaniel said, via The Miami Herald. “Guys are very frustrated…It’s super frustrating.”

“Fortunately, the bad taste in our mouth continues, but we have another opportunity to play Thursday night against an opponent [Buffalo] that won’t care about any of our hardships,” McDaniel continued. “It’s important guys have perspective. Over the many years I’ve been doing this, there is not a team — the Super Bowl champion, the seventh seed — [whose season is determined] in two weeks.”

    *********************************************

DeVon Achane kept us in the game. I watched the entire game. Tua played like ass. The 47 yard completion to Hill was severely underthrown, not a back shoulder type of throw, but underthrown to the point Tyreek had to stop, circle back and get the ball. A good throw would have been a TD, and I believe we settled for a FG on that drive. Achane had 8 catches for 92 and did all the work himself. Every throw to Waddle he had to come back to the ball and leave himself vulnerable to getting crushed by the defender with the exception of the TD throw which was fine. Now we’re using excuses that the Patriots knew we couldn’t run the ball so Tua did well. There’s an endless well of excuses for our QB who in reality just isn’t good enough, he wasn’t all last season and he’s picked that right back up. He had one excellent season with the cheat motion and therefore that’s the aberration, not the norm. Aim fucking higher! Also, raise your standards as to what good QB play is and stop looking at the rating which for some reason means nothing with Tua, he’s found a way to beat the rating and still look like shite!

I feel like I’ve been complaining about the timing of the snap of the ball for a couple of years

it drives me crazy that they snap it with so little time on the play clock (when they manage to snap it)

it’s just not an issue with delay of game, it’s gives DL a better chance to time their pushes and makes our OL jobs harder

It seems to have really blown up this weekend

but I’m curious if you guys think it’s as significant as I do

if I had to pick one thing to fix that can make a difference – that would be the thing I fix

  92. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Absolutely EXCELLENT breakdown by Kurt Warner above. To sum it up: Coach McDaniel calls questionable plays in terms of concept and timing. Some players may not know what they should be doing in terms of the nuances. We’re not widening the field or the depth of the field as we should be with routes (could be coaching or the receiver).

Tua sometimes plays too fast or too slow with his footwork and his reads. Tua sometimes has problems reading the field (could be coaching or the receiver… or Tua).

Kurt didn’t get into our pass-protection, nor anything to do with our running game: just the QB, the concepts, the timing, the reading, the receivers and their routes, and the execution.

He puts the blame squarely on… EVERYBODY. There’s enough blame to go around.

My biggest takeaway? Coach McD didn’t seem to have these problems in ’22 and ’23 regarding the nuances. Sloppy play-calling, the inability to adjust in-game or after halftime, and we have a QB who has been instructed to play to NOT get hurt.

As I’ve stated, Tua is not THE problem… but he’s not THE answer, either.

Mike E, and as I stated yesterday, we can’t build around a QB who is one hit away from becoming scrambled eggs. We must draft a QB in the 1st round of the ’26 Draft… without Coach McD and GM Grier at the helm.

  93. Randy's avatar Randy says:

I think we need a bit of Ritalin around here. Yes, this team was poorly designed, developed and built. Yes, once they built a Ferrari they kept smashing it into a wall hoping to break through. Yes, even after they realized a Ferrari is really pretty to look at but won’t hold up, they scoffed at the idea of maybe building a mustang with really tough tires as a step in the right direction at the very least and assured us tires just don’t matter that much….lets just get flashier. Yes, they engendered a culture of sounding great….but saying nothing. A culture that understands toughness so little that they think they can just pull it out of thin air. A culture where corners were cut. Where more money was spent on the paint job than the power train.

Now with all that some might say this team has sunk to the deepest depths of the league. Some might rightfully question the path so staunchly taken by those who believe. By those who see the ray of light slipping through the thick clouds of doubt that hang over this franchise. They might remind us that hope, after all, is a choice.

And, so I choose to hope we kick the ever loving shit out of the team I hate the most tomorrow night…and if shit needs to get ugly….get a fucking paper bag out like you did in college. It’s ass kicking time!
