Dolphins fail to make upset bid a reality

The Dolphins surprised many of us here last night and actually made a game of it last night in Buffalo at the OLD Highmark Stadium. Some fans will blame the game on DT Zach Sieler and others will blame it on QB Tua Tagovailoa and others still on all of them and add in HC Mike McDaniel. If you didn’t watch, I’ll sum up the chain of events. With 10:20 left in the 4th quarter, the bills were punting, and and Dolphins were in punt block formation. Zach Sieler came right up the middle and the big guy dove to block the punt, but the punter got the ball off easily and Sieler and his momentum couldn’t stop and he rolled into the Punter and thw appropriate “Roughing the Punter” was made. That gave the Bills a first down in Miami territory and the Bills of course took advantage of that and scored a TD.

So now the Dolphins are down 28-21 with 7:17 left in the game. The Dolphins start the drive at the 36 yard line after a 29 yard kick return by Dee Eskridge who had a nice evening in the return game. The Dolphins drive the ball to the to the Buffalo 21 yard line where it’s 1st and 10 with 4:40 remaining in the game as the Dolphins are going in for the tie. It never happens, because on 1st down, Tua in the shotgun looks to hit WR Jaylen Waddle on short pass on the right side but QB Tua Tagovailoa threw the ball right into the waiting arms of Bills LB Terrel Bernard who saw Tua looking at Waddle the whole way. The Bills then drove for an a FG to put the game out of reach at 31-21 in what was a winnable game for us.

I’m on Dolphins twitter often and although I haven’t ventured on yet this morning, I know very well what I will see. It will be something along these lines, but this a fictitious tweet.

“Tua played a great game, kept us in it, that Zach Sieler penalty killed us”

It seems no one wants to hold dear Tua accountable. I ask all the time, when will Tua ever make the big play to WIN a big game rather than lose it, and honestly, I don’t believe we’ll ever get an answer to that question. It’s so unfortunately clear that he is just incapable of elevating his play and helping this team win when the chips are down against a good team. He’s not it, not the guy, he’s a good QB who can’t show up when you need him to. That’s his ceiling.

If you add in the fact that Mike McDaniel was brought in to soothe Tua, and to help elevate his confidence and his game, I guess that makes two guys who just can’t get it done. If you add in that our roster is a freaking joke, I guess that makes three guys who can’t get it done as Chris Grier has assembled this mess. I was a on a text thread will my buddies and my friend Scott is a Steelers fan and telling me that our team has a lot of talent. I’d say De’Von Achane is the best player on the team. I’d say Tyreek Hill on the right team with the right QB is next. Maybe Bradley Chubb on the right team is right there too. What does that say? I think we owe both of those guys an opportunity to be great somewhere else! Both should have good enough value to to get our new GM some decent draft capital. Hill may fetch as high as a 3rd, and Chubb probably a round or two later but we could sure use those picks and I’d bet a new GM would be able to use them singularly, without using two or more to get a good player, unlike our current GM who loves doubling up draft picks and squandering our draft capital.

So we’re 0-3 and we get to show the world our fancy new Rivalry Uniforms, the dark navy blue uniform with aqua and orange trim. Don’t forget to buy them all, Stephen Ross would sure appreciate it! Anyone who buys any jersey for this team right now and spends a lot of money must be crazy! Who knows who will be here next year when we clean house? Or will we? That’s the scariest part is not knowing whether Ross can actually fire GM Chris Grier, HC Mike McDaniel and in turn, end QB Tua Tagovailoa’s rein here in Miami. He’ll be on the roster because his salary is around $60M next season, but that doesn’t mean he has to play.

I do believe at some point this season if the misery continues, we should take a look at QB Quinn Ewers. Not now, it’s too early and there’s too much season left, but I do believe it’s in our best interest to see what we have in Ewers and see if maybe he’s the next Brock Purdy, but hopefully one that doesn’t get hurt as much. We know now, or at least Tua Tagovailoa has shown us time and time again he’s not the guy, so we need to find his replacement. Ewers could be Skylar Thompson 2.1 and that’s fine, at least we know he’s not the answer either and then we should draft our next QB early in the draft next year.

We gave the Bills a much better fight than the NY Jets, no question about that, and the Jets were home for the Bills. BTW, did I mention it was a warm and comfortable evening in Buffalo at around 66 degrees, so it wasn’t the cold last night that did us in. If the game is on the line and your franchise QB has the ball, you need him to tie that game last night and not turn the ball over again, and he let us down as per usghe. Does any of this mean anything for next week’s game, of course not, but I just don’t know how much more proof any fan who knows the game needs to realize he’s not the guy.

DC Anthony Weaver was the hot name to be interim HC if Mike McDaniel gets fired. Have we really seen anything this season that makes that a wise move? Our defense wasn’t as bad last night against a better opponent, but it wasn’t good, and it didn’t help us win the game last night either. I don’t think it’s a slam dunk in any way, We’ve allowed 32.3 points per game, so is that the guy that’s earned the right to be Head Coach of the Miami Dolphins, even if it’s just an interim title?

I’ve said it myself that the defensive front 7 could be a really good unit if they stay healthy. Bradley Chubb, Jaelan Phillips, and how about that exciting 2nd year player Chop Robinson who is primed for a big season? Chop has 3 tackles and 1 sack. 3 games, 3 tackles??? You can get run over and a ballcarrier could trip on your fallen body in their path and get a tackle, so three tackles in 3 games? Besides Bradley Chubb. who has 3 sacks, Jaelan Phillips, Chop Robinson, Kenneth Grant, Benito Jones, Zach Sieler have been invisible. Well, Sieler was invisible until he ran into the punter last night anyway. I know our secondary is a mess, but so is the rest of it. There’s nothing goo to see here. S Dante Trader did make a really nice shoe string tackle to probably save a TD last night as he closed quickly and dove hard to make the play. S Minkah Fitzpatrick is 3rd on the team in tackles with 22, but has he made one impact play that makes you think we have an All Pro Safety back there?

Maybe the Jets will be the elixir that makes us feel good for a week. Or, maybe the Jets will make us feel good for a different reason because if the NY Jets find a way to embarrass our team more than they have been already, in our house wearing those silly dark navy Rivalry jerseys, maybe that’s the last straw for Dolphins owner Stephen Ross and finally does what needs to be done. What I fear most is Ross solely firing HC Mike McDaniel and leaving Chris Grier in. That might send me into a tizzy, I’m not gonna lie. I honestly don’t know if I could dedicate any more time on this team if Ross tells us Chris Grier is the the guy who will continue to run this franchise, I really don’t.

I don’t care if the Bills win the Superbowl. What’s the difference to us? We’re going to be in this same stupid spot until they actually do something about it. I really can’t imagine us still sucking like we do and no changes coming here.

    • bookman11's avatar bookman11 says:

I don’t care either. I get tired of having to cheer against other teams because the Dolphins suck and there is nothing else to cheer for. More power to those teams that are consistently good. I vaguely remember when that was us.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Vaguely is a fine adjective usage there. Same here. Unfortunately with Marino, he peaked early, and the Bills just got better and better until ’94, but Marino himself was a shadow of the player he once was.

I don’t think enough has been made of the Warner video on the Tua, doing what he does, int

we know Tua sucks, but that wasn’t the point of the video, the HC setting him up to fail is the real issue

its quite apparent McNut is way in over his head

is Ross this clueless? Rhetorical of course

    ————–

Exactly, Steve. The way Coach McD is spacing things, there is no margin for error. 1 missed footstep could lead to disaster. He needs to spread the field horizontally if we’re going to play dink-and-dunk all day. Heck, he needs to spread the field horizontally regardless.

I wouldn’t go so far as to say Tua sucks, but he could navigate much easier if the spacing was proper. We have the speed, but we aren’t utilizing it the way we should be.

  5. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Regarding trading Chubb, it does make sense. He is showing he is healthy and creating pressure and sacks. He will be VERY cheap to a team this year at only 1.25m with a 129K active game bonus, so cap isn’t an issue. Though, he does have a bunch of incentives. In 2026, Chubb will cost that team about 20m with a 40k active game bonus.

The 49er’s could easily handle Chubb’s contract as they have plenty left this year and have over 60m in 2026 cap space.

The move wouldn’t a big cap clearer for the Dolphins. It would only clear his 1.255m base salary this year and only clear about 7.3m in 2026 due to his huge restructure.

The 49er’s are projected to get up to 4 comp picks so they will have the capital. I could easily see getting their third, which at being 3-0 is projected at pick 94 right now. I think getting their second would be asking too much which is projected at #61 right now.

Warner admits there are things he doesn’t know about the plays he’s reviewing, so you gotta take it with that in mind. That INT play involved either and/or bad routes, bad protection, bad play design and bad QB play. Gee….i wonder why it didn’t work. Does it matter who’s more at fault?

I just realized I hadn’t refreshed the site in 8 days when I used to check it out daily. lol

  11. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    BBM,

As always, timing plays are precision plays. You expect every BODY to be in a certain place at a certain time and that everything went right. We don’t know what that inside receiver was supposed to do, so it’s hard to say who did what wrong. If that inside defender followed him down field it would’ve been a good play.

Bottom line is I expect my QB to read that inside defender and not throw if he doesn’t go with that inside receiver….even IF the receiver screwed up and ran deep. The QB STILL has to read that defender. Tua did what the practice of that timing play told him to do….not what the actual play on the field dictated.

  12. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

The Miami Dolphins announced today they have signed offensive linemen Roy Mbaeteka and Kadeem Telfort to the practice squad.

Mbaeteka signed with the Dolphins as part of the NFL’s International Player Pathway Program. He has spent time on the practice squad with Arizona (2025), Cleveland (2024), Chicago (2023) and the New York Giants (2022). A native of Nigeria, Mbaeteka originally entered the league with the Giants via the NFL’s International Player Pathway Program in 2022.

Telfort has appeared in 16 career games with Green Bay (2024), in addition to one postseason contest with the Packers. He entered the NFL as an undrafted college free agent in 2023 with Green Bay, where he spent the season on the practice squad. He played collegiately at UAB (2020-22), where he appeared in 21 career games in three seasons with the Blazers.

  13. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I have mixed takes. My first take? If the stej destroy us on Monday night, I think Ross could pull the plug on Coach McD. My second take? Why pull the plug on Coach McD when he could lead us to the #1 overall draft pick in ’26?

    This team… 🤪

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

And don’t forget… we’ve already begun to stockpile future picks. Once ‘Reek is traded, we’ll have even more ammo. If Chubb is traded, we’ll have even more ammo. Ya get the idea.

  14. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

If you can’t trade Chubb for at least a 3rd by next draft, then it would be best to keep him and designate him a post 6/1 release. That way we can clear 20.2m in cap next year. Again, anything before 2026 post June 1 only clears 7.3m next year so the compensation needs to be worth it.

If Ross fires McDaniel alone, that will scare the hell out of me. He’s got to fire both, or neither. Just let both of them finish out the season if you’re not going to change both. I know it’s possible they could fire Grier at season’s end, but Ross also might keep him around. Omar talks about the Brian Flores lawsuit often and thinks Ross might want to keep Grier on his side until that’s over with. I hope that’s just crazy talk from Omar and not reality, because if it’s true, we’re fucked!

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Yeah, in that article, you can’t fire one. You have to fire both and not even give Grier a different position. He needs to be removed from the organization in order for things to work.

  18. bookman11's avatar bookman11 says:

The best path to a high draft pick would be to keep MM and Grier for the entire season. There would need to be an ultimatum from Ross that Grier cannot do any trades unless it amounts to the Dolphins gaining picks next year.

  19. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Brian Flores filed a class-action racial discrimination lawsuit against the NFL and three teams (Denver Broncos, New York Giants, and Houston Texans) in February 2022, alleging systemic discrimination in hiring practices against Black coaches and executives. While his claims against the Dolphins are subject to the NFL’s arbitration process, a federal appeals court recently ruled that the claims against the other teams and the league can proceed to open court, citing flaws in the NFL’s arbitration system. Flores is seeking policy changes to increase transparency and representation in hiring processe

  20. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

One thing I didn’t know about Mendoza is he is from Miami and the grandson of Cuban immigrants. I did know he is very smart as he was offered to go to Yale and Penn but opted to go to Cal.

I’m still not sold on his mobility or lack of.

  21. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Rock – Not sure what the deal is, I was thinking it was to the part where Flores was told to tank the season.

    • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Mike, I’m nearly positive that the whole tanking issue is done and gone. We were fined money and draft picks and we have moved on. There’s nothing left to talk about there.
I think Omar is out of his fucking mind thinking that we are still involved with the discrimination suit. We are not.

  22. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Not sure it I posted him before, but TCU redshirt junior QB Josh Hoover is another mid round prospect who is looking good so far. He’s 6’2, 200, has a quick release and good accuracy. Kind of reminds me of a Brock Purdy.

He has another year of eligibility but could enter the draft as this is his 3rd year starting.

Another QB matchup to watch Friday night is Josh Hoover of TCU at Arizona State and Sam Leavitt on FOX.

Sam Leavitt was on my watch list. He’s another dual threat QB at 6’2, 205. He had a good year last year but has regressed a little as a passer this year, IMO.

Then there is a whole slate of good games on Saturday.

  30. Randy's avatar Randy says:

I wouldn’t mind focusing on a pass rusher in the next draft. We’ll see how this year goes, but I just gotta see a whole lot more out of guys like Phillips and Chop. Chubb should be gone. What do we really have as far as young edge rush potential? All those rookies looking good on the inside as we’re being told doesn’t help much if your edge guys aren’t getting home or setting the edge.

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

      Edge is a big ?

Phillips is a free agent and you certainly can’t or shouldn’t keep Chubb at a 31.2m cap hit.

That said, Chubb and Chop are the only Edge/OLB under contract in 2026, right now.

  31. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Jaelen Phillips has played in a mere 15 games over the last 51 games, starting in 12 of those games.

If we’re going to have a ‘fire sale’, he must be part of it. Grier used a 1st round pick on him. What can we get in return… a 5th or 6th round pick?

By the time this season is over and we hopefully pare down this roster through a couple of trades, maybe 2-3 of them, we’re going to have holes all over the place. You have to figure Tyreek is gone, and hopefully Chubb too. I’d say the best compensation we get will be for Hill, maybe a 3rd RD pick. Chubb will be less, maybe a 4th or worse unless he really starts playing well. I don’t see Jaelan Phillips as a potential trde because he’s not doing anything and he’s always hurt.

I like to use Ourlads for their depth chart, and they have Jordan Phillips as the starting NT/DT over Benito Jones. On the Dolphins website, not the case. Also, Ourlads has Brunskill starting at RG and the Phins website still has Kion Smith. Wonder which one is right . . .

    ——-

IU runs a spread/power spread offense. It’s set up with a good running game. IU is #3 in the nation in rushing yards per game at 308 ypg and leads the nation in total YPG at 588. Nothing gimmicky about it.

Most all NFL teams run versions of the West Coast, Spread or Air Coryell systems. Probably just a hand full run something different.

Unlike in the distant past, most college QB’s can translate to the NFL because the systems are more similar. I guess due to all these young OC’s coming up from the college ranks.

Most colleges run a spread offense while others run the Air Raid or “multiple” offense (multiple means they run a little bit of everything).

  39. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

As far as TCU ad Josh Hoover, I think they run an Air Raid offense.

I was only looking at him as a day 3 or UDFA prospect.

We should draft a QB somewhere in the draft and bring in a 4th as an UDFA.

  40. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

As far as reading a D, IMO, that’s on the coaching and the player’s IQ. Mendoza has great coaching and a high IQ. We will see if he can put/keep it together vs the better defensive teams in Iowa this weekend then Oregon the next week and PSU later.

Yet another QB to keep an eye on and nobody is talking about right now is Ty Simpson of Alabama. He’s 6’2, 208 and also has the mobility to run. This is his 4th season with Alabama so he’s a redshirt junior. Also, his 1st year starting for Alabama so he likely stays another year to increase his draft stock.

He struggled just a little in his 1st ever start vs FSU on opening day this season. He played well early until FSU turned on the juice.

Since that game he has been lights out, completing 100% of his passes vs ULM and lit up Wisconsin completing 83% of passes for 382 (with 2 bad drops), 4 TD’s and 0 INT’s. Through 3 games he’s complete 73% for 862 yards, 9 TD’s and 0 INT’s.

This Saturday night on ABC will be a good time to check him out when Alabama plays at #5 Georgia.

    He is draft eligible though.
