Dolphins fail to make upset bid a reality

The Dolphins surprised many of us here last night and actually made a game of it last night in Buffalo at the OLD Highmark Stadium. Some fans will blame the game on DT Zach Sieler and others will blame it on QB Tua Tagovailoa and others still on all of them and add in HC Mike McDaniel. If you didn’t watch, I’ll sum up the chain of events. With 10:20 left in the 4th quarter, the bills were punting, and and Dolphins were in punt block formation. Zach Sieler came right up the middle and the big guy dove to block the punt, but the punter got the ball off easily and Sieler and his momentum couldn’t stop and he rolled into the Punter and thw appropriate “Roughing the Punter” was made. That gave the Bills a first down in Miami territory and the Bills of course took advantage of that and scored a TD.

So now the Dolphins are down 28-21 with 7:17 left in the game. The Dolphins start the drive at the 36 yard line after a 29 yard kick return by Dee Eskridge who had a nice evening in the return game. The Dolphins drive the ball to the to the Buffalo 21 yard line where it’s 1st and 10 with 4:40 remaining in the game as the Dolphins are going in for the tie. It never happens, because on 1st down, Tua in the shotgun looks to hit WR Jaylen Waddle on short pass on the right side but QB Tua Tagovailoa threw the ball right into the waiting arms of Bills LB Terrel Bernard who saw Tua looking at Waddle the whole way. The Bills then drove for an a FG to put the game out of reach at 31-21 in what was a winnable game for us.

I’m on Dolphins twitter often and although I haven’t ventured on yet this morning, I know very well what I will see. It will be something along these lines, but this a fictitious tweet.

“Tua played a great game, kept us in it, that Zach Sieler penalty killed us”

It seems no one wants to hold dear Tua accountable. I ask all the time, when will Tua ever make the big play to WIN a big game rather than lose it, and honestly, I don’t believe we’ll ever get an answer to that question. It’s so unfortunately clear that he is just incapable of elevating his play and helping this team win when the chips are down against a good team. He’s not it, not the guy, he’s a good QB who can’t show up when you need him to. That’s his ceiling.

If you add in the fact that Mike McDaniel was brought in to soothe Tua, and to help elevate his confidence and his game, I guess that makes two guys who just can’t get it done. If you add in that our roster is a freaking joke, I guess that makes three guys who can’t get it done as Chris Grier has assembled this mess. I was a on a text thread will my buddies and my friend Scott is a Steelers fan and telling me that our team has a lot of talent. I’d say De’Von Achane is the best player on the team. I’d say Tyreek Hill on the right team with the right QB is next. Maybe Bradley Chubb on the right team is right there too. What does that say? I think we owe both of those guys an opportunity to be great somewhere else! Both should have good enough value to to get our new GM some decent draft capital. Hill may fetch as high as a 3rd, and Chubb probably a round or two later but we could sure use those picks and I’d bet a new GM would be able to use them singularly, without using two or more to get a good player, unlike our current GM who loves doubling up draft picks and squandering our draft capital.

So we’re 0-3 and we get to show the world our fancy new Rivalry Uniforms, the dark navy blue uniform with aqua and orange trim. Don’t forget to buy them all, Stephen Ross would sure appreciate it! Anyone who buys any jersey for this team right now and spends a lot of money must be crazy! Who knows who will be here next year when we clean house? Or will we? That’s the scariest part is not knowing whether Ross can actually fire GM Chris Grier, HC Mike McDaniel and in turn, end QB Tua Tagovailoa’s rein here in Miami. He’ll be on the roster because his salary is around $60M next season, but that doesn’t mean he has to play.

I do believe at some point this season if the misery continues, we should take a look at QB Quinn Ewers. Not now, it’s too early and there’s too much season left, but I do believe it’s in our best interest to see what we have in Ewers and see if maybe he’s the next Brock Purdy, but hopefully one that doesn’t get hurt as much. We know now, or at least Tua Tagovailoa has shown us time and time again he’s not the guy, so we need to find his replacement. Ewers could be Skylar Thompson 2.1 and that’s fine, at least we know he’s not the answer either and then we should draft our next QB early in the draft next year.

We gave the Bills a much better fight than the NY Jets, no question about that, and the Jets were home for the Bills. BTW, did I mention it was a warm and comfortable evening in Buffalo at around 66 degrees, so it wasn’t the cold last night that did us in. If the game is on the line and your franchise QB has the ball, you need him to tie that game last night and not turn the ball over again, and he let us down as per usghe. Does any of this mean anything for next week’s game, of course not, but I just don’t know how much more proof any fan who knows the game needs to realize he’s not the guy.

DC Anthony Weaver was the hot name to be interim HC if Mike McDaniel gets fired. Have we really seen anything this season that makes that a wise move? Our defense wasn’t as bad last night against a better opponent, but it wasn’t good, and it didn’t help us win the game last night either. I don’t think it’s a slam dunk in any way, We’ve allowed 32.3 points per game, so is that the guy that’s earned the right to be Head Coach of the Miami Dolphins, even if it’s just an interim title?

I’ve said it myself that the defensive front 7 could be a really good unit if they stay healthy. Bradley Chubb, Jaelan Phillips, and how about that exciting 2nd year player Chop Robinson who is primed for a big season? Chop has 3 tackles and 1 sack. 3 games, 3 tackles??? You can get run over and a ballcarrier could trip on your fallen body in their path and get a tackle, so three tackles in 3 games? Besides Bradley Chubb. who has 3 sacks, Jaelan Phillips, Chop Robinson, Kenneth Grant, Benito Jones, Zach Sieler have been invisible. Well, Sieler was invisible until he ran into the punter last night anyway. I know our secondary is a mess, but so is the rest of it. There’s nothing goo to see here. S Dante Trader did make a really nice shoe string tackle to probably save a TD last night as he closed quickly and dove hard to make the play. S Minkah Fitzpatrick is 3rd on the team in tackles with 22, but has he made one impact play that makes you think we have an All Pro Safety back there?

Maybe the Jets will be the elixir that makes us feel good for a week. Or, maybe the Jets will make us feel good for a different reason because if the NY Jets find a way to embarrass our team more than they have been already, in our house wearing those silly dark navy Rivalry jerseys, maybe that’s the last straw for Dolphins owner Stephen Ross and finally does what needs to be done. What I fear most is Ross solely firing HC Mike McDaniel and leaving Chris Grier in. That might send me into a tizzy, I’m not gonna lie. I honestly don’t know if I could dedicate any more time on this team if Ross tells us Chris Grier is the the guy who will continue to run this franchise, I really don’t.

I turned the Oklahoma/Auburn game off. It’s unwatchable, both O-lines suck and I’m sick of seeing the officials stop play every other play.

  2. rich0322's avatar rich0322 says:

I’m starting to think there aren’t any special QB prospect coming out next year. Definitely no Joe Burrows or Andrew Luck kind of prospect. BBM might be onto something, about doubling up on the position if you decide to take one early. I would be hard pressed to put any of them in my top 20 prospects next year.

Dante Moore out of Oregon is definitely someone I’m keeping an eye on.

Rich, I am not overly impressed with this QB class thus far either. At this point, none worth a top 15 pick, IMO. That’s why I have us trading down and/or taking an OT in the 1st.

  31. Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

Tua is a good/very good QB when everything is going well(blocking, running game, healthy OL, etc.). When those pieces aren’t in place, he is a very average QB. He has only shown the ability to put his team on his back on two occasions and lead them to victory. In five-plus years. If he hasn’t shown it yet, it ain’t happening.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

if you trust Warner, then MM doesn’t know how to design a properly

he says each receiver has a purpose, each play has a problem defender, which needs to be accounted for

on the Tua int Waddle should’ve been outside the numbers, and the TE should’ve run an inside route to take away the Mike

Since neither of those things happened, the play was designed to fail against a decent Mike

in no way is Tua off the hook, as he stared down the WR and didn’t check the Mike

Brunskill completely whiffed on his block causing the urgency

  32. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

How much does Tua pay Kurt Warner to be in his fan club?

Like I said, I’d rather have a Hall of Fame QB playing for us than a Hall of Fame QB defending our QB’s shitty play that helped us lose the game. Thank you!

Why am I watching the Stealers* @ Patsies* game? For a myriad of reasons. A few of the reasons: are the Stealers* for real, could they use Tyreek Hill, how do they fare against the Patsies* (who we lost to), is A-Rod going to fail, should we have signed FA Jabrill Peppers, and was it worth it to trade Ramsey and Jonnu for Minkah?

There are even MORE reasons, but these are just a few.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I think for under 2 minutes situations reviews should still come from the booth BUT each team should also be able to challenge one time as long as they have a challenge left.

I’ve seen too many times a play likely would be overturned and they just refuse to review it.

      Lol

0-4 here we come. This team cant stop Tyrod

      • New Age's avatar New Age says:

Yeah, Tyrod and Geno are old school backups that can actually win games and sometimes start for a while. Honestly, I don’t think we could have stopped Fields either.

I was wondering earlier, who can we stop? Panthers before this week but not so sure now. Maybe Saints and Falcons? I was hoping we’d play Cincy before Burrow gets back for a feel-good win but he should be back by then to pile on. Maybe they shut him down all year because they aren’t getting to the playoffs. Can we do that with Tua at some point?

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

But on the slowed down replay, he pretty clearly gained control with his left foot down, then dragged the right foot.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Yeah, like Bri said, they ruled it incomplete, and since it was under 2 minutes, the Bucs couldn’t challenge. The Bucs even took a TO to give the refs longer to look at it and the booth still didn’t initiate a review.

It ended up not mattering, but it was ridiculous they didn’t review it.

  62. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I know it feels like a loss to kick a fg from the 2 yd line, but it’s a 6-6 game at the end of the 3rd and you go for it on 4th instead of taking the points?

This is the first time I’ve seen a safety and following free kick with the new kickoff rules.

The kicker kicks the ball off a tee from his own 20. The ball still has to get into the landing zone (goal line to 20), and it looked like the kick return team starts at the same place as a regular kick. If the ball doesn’t get to the landing zone, the announcer said the receiving team gets the ball at the 50.

So, as long as your kicker gets it to the landing zone, it’s basically a regular kickoff (unless I misjudged where the cover team is starting from).

Mets are at the Cubs for 3 games then at the Marlins for the final 3 games

DB’s are home vs the Dodgers for 3 games then at the Padres for the final 3 games.

Reds just completed a 4 game sweep of the Cubs. Cubs got to be angry.

It’s going to be interesting this week.

Thank you, Reds for sweeping the Cubs. That went a long way to helping the Brewers clinch the division. Now on to the top seed!!

Believe it or not, but I’m a NY Mets fan myself. I’ve been a fan since the early 80’s when I was a small kid. I haven’t followed the team since Wright and Reyes, but still keep an eye on their record. My all-time favorite Mets were Lenny Dykstra and Keith Hernandez back in mid 80’s. I did get to meet Strawberry and Gooden as a kid at a Baseball card show and both were extremely nice guys. (While Jose Canseco not so much…) Who could ever forget the awesome George Foster commercial, “Let’s Get Mets-merized, today”.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I met Canseco a couple of times, what a douche

Cuban friends from high school were telling me early 80s he was juicing, he went to the closest HS south from where I went

they said the summer after HS he buffed out so quickly, only 1 conclusion you could, but they also knew him from ball outside of school

      • rich0322's avatar rich0322 says:

Yea, no doubt about the juicing. My favorite non-Met player from the 80’s-90’s was Mark McGwire. I used to collect all his baseball cards. It’s a shame about all the juicing back then. Even Dykstra juiced heading to the Phillies.

How does this year’s QB draft group compare to next year’s? I’m not sold on the idea of having to draft a QB next draft unless there’s a guy there I think is worth it. I’m not hearing any of these QBs talked about in that way. Maybe it’s more strategic to build your overall team next draft and go after a QB you want after. I don’t know much about these QBs, so I’m just asking

  79. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

2017 was supposedly a week draft for QB’s with Trubiski going #2 overall and some guy who went #10 overall, Patrick Mahomes or something like that…

    • rich0322's avatar rich0322 says:

Exactly, you never know. It’s definitely not an exact science for sure. I just mention who I like, I’m definitely no football scout.

  80. Randy's avatar Randy says:

Thanks guys. I don’t think you can go more than 3 years down the road. Too much changes in 3 years. But, I don’t think we need to be in a hurry to get a QB if the options aren’t worth it. I have no idea what QBs are coming down the pipe. It might be a moot point. Maybe the guys there now are the best coming in 3 years. Teams should already know these things.

Also, if there really aren’t any guys who stand out, please don’t waste a lot of capital getting a guy. Make trades. Get future picks. Use those to get a guy you like later. Pick a QB if you want but don’t waste picks doing it.

  81. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    Rock,

Absolutely. But, these teams are already looking years down the road on these guys, aren’t they? Maybe they actually don’t, but I’d be shocked. Sure, there are always bad decisions that are made. It’s not a science.

Mahomes, for example, was not a sure fire pick. Lots of folks felt he had a lot to learn. I don’t recall many people questioning his pick. Rodgers was the biggest “no pick” I can remember. Mahomes also sat most of his rookie season.

Sometimes if might just come down to having a high enough pick to get a top rated guy. Like I said, I’m not against getting a guy just please don’t waste a ton of stuff to get a guy whom you don’t think is it in the first place but is the best available.

  82. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Bookman, I know and no need to bring up the dang Brewers. 😉

  83. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    BBM,

Yep, given Tua’s situation, it just makes more sense to wait. Especially if there really isn’t a guy there you like. I’m not a huge fan of using mid round picks on QBs if you want a high end starter. There are always exceptions but most elite QBs are 1st rounders. It almost feels like a waste of a mid round pick to get a QB, but I’m not saying teams can’t do it. Value is value. Teams are drafting traits now not players. If you like a guy’s traits and can get him in the 4the round, pick him. Just make sure he’s at least a high end backup.

  84. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I’ll simplify it. If Grier is still here for the 2026 Draft, it doesn’t matter whether we’re drafting a QB, LT, RT C, etc etc, he will FUCK IT UP!!!

    Randy,

I’m significantly underwhelmed by what I’ve seen to date at the QB position in the NCAA… you aren’t alone. It’s still early, though.

I was listening to a sports radio show earlier this afternoon, and the topic of Drew Allar (QB, PSU) came up regarding the upcoming Oregon-PSU game. Somebody brought up the fact that most of PSU’s current receivers entered the transfer portal from other schools, and that it would take time for Allar and these receivers to get on the same page.

They (the guys on the radio) all agreed that we could see a new Allar this week, particularly being PSU didn’t throw their whole playbook at weak teams.

I’m certain the same could be said for a lot of other QBs this year in the NCAA. IMO, the transfer portal is destroying college football.

I think we all need to be patient on QBs this season for the above reasons alone. And I’m certainly on your bus to NOT draft a QB high if he isn’t the one. Time will tell…

I have family and friends who are Giants and Jets fans, both 0-3. We’re 0-3 and those of us who are Mets fans we no longer in control our own destiny for the playoffs, something we’ve had since April. Aren’t sports cool?!!! 😳

I honestly tried to watch all of Coach McD’s presser from about an hour ago. I seriously had to shut it off less than halfway through for all the ummms, uhhhhs, and, ya know, etc.

I’m not a baseball fan, but I follow the Twins if they are winning. The Twins suck. I’ve become a MN Wild fan and watch every game I can. They have lost in the first round of the playoffs about 8-10 years and now Kaprizov won’t resign so far. Or, he’ll get paid $20M/year and ruin the team’s future. And, I’m a Dolphins fan.

…we need a dual threat QB, that has decent accuracy a decent arm and at least 6’3″

    ————

I agreed with this 2 days ago and still agree with it today… Steve is right, IMO.

Today’s NFL what with the rules and all, TRENDS toward a QB of these parameters. If that guy isn’t available early in the ’26 Draft, there’s no need to push all of one’s chips to the center of the table.

I don’t think enough has been made of the Warner video on the Tua, doing what he does, int

we know Tua sucks, but that wasn’t the point of the video, the HC setting him up to fail is the real issue

its quite apparent McNut is way in over his head

is Ross this clueless? Rhetorical of course
