2025 Season – Game 5 – Dolphins @ Panthers

The Miami Dolphins finally got in the win column. The record now stands at 1-3, while of course the Buffalo Bills are undefeated at 4-0. The win itself was unimpressive, it felt like the Jets were not only playing against our Dolphins on the field, but the officiating crew as well. The Jets were hit with 13 penalties for 101 yards while the Dolphins only 6 penalties for 40 yards. I’m not going to name all the penalties that could/should have been called on our team but the two egregious misses in my view were the tackle of QB Justin Fields out of bounds, he was so clearly already out of bounds and was tackled at least 3-5 yards beyond being out of bounds. That should have been a 15 yard personal foul. The other one was Jets 2nd TE Jeremy Ruckert caught a pass and was tackled, and then a good second to a second and a half later, a Dolphins defender decided to dive on his back way too late. Despite the fact that the game was in the evening, it was actually still 86 degrees and plenty hot, but of course the blazing sun was not a factor.

It’s one game, but I can admit at least as far as his initial game performance, that TE Darren Waller, who I mocked GM Chris Grier relentlessly for played very well and made his presence felt. Obviously, he has to do a whole lot more, because one huge factor in my criticism is that I don’t think Waller is going to be here long, but if he keeps being making big plays and helping the team, I may just end up being very wrong about that move. In any case, as any Dolphins fan knows, we lost WR Tyreek Hill to a devastating knee injury, a dislocation, which included torn ligaments as well, most notably his ACL. I’m not sure if we’ll ever see Tyreek Hill in a Miami Dolphins uniform again, but I do think the people that made fun of Tyreek’s smiling and clapping were out of line, I think he was thanking the fans applause and that’s all it was.

Jaylen Waddle time. It’s not that Jaylen Waddle has to be Tyreek Hill, he just has to be Jaylen Waddle before Tyreek was even here. Or, even Jaylen Waddle of 2022 when Tyreek first came to the Dolphins. He had back to back 1000 yard receiving seasons with 14 total TD’s over those 2 years. In 2021 he was almost like a possession receiver, but in 2022, he became a big play receiver with an outstanding 18.1 YPR with 1356 yards receiving and 8 TD’s. Let’s face it, the offense runs through RB De’Von Achane, but Waddle has to be involved. He may not be an elite #1 WR like Jamar Chase or Justin Jefferson or Puka Nacua, but he doesn’t have to be any of that. I prefer a more balanced attack anyway, so keep letting Achane do his thing, if Waller can keep contributing that would be great, and WR Malik Washington has also proven he’s a very shifty runner with the football and runs good routes and understands his assignments. I’d like to see them ramp up RB Ollie Gordon’s carries too, but it sure is hard to not want to feed Achane, he’s so good.

So what’s up with the rookies? Well, so far not a whole lot of good to report. Our two first picks, DT Kenneth Grant who we took at RD 1 #13 and LG Jonah Savaiinaea have not played well. Grant was supposed to a stout interior defender who really plays the run well, and he’s been nearly invisible. Savaiinaea who required another Grier trade up hasn’t looked the part at LG at all yet. The other draft piocks haven’t fared much better, DT’s Jordan Phillips and Zeek Biggers have been playing but not showing up quite yet, and even RB Ollie Gordon has only 18 carries as so far though 5 games, not even 5 per game. Who knows what’s going on with last year’s Grier’s trade up, RB Jaylen Wright who has yet to play this season.

You want some good news? Grier’s late piickups, CB’s Rasul Douglas and CB Jack Jones have been playing pretty well. Not outstanding, but both played extremely well against the Jets. Jack Jones had what could easily be the biggest play of the game punching out the football from Jets RB Braelon Allen near the goal line. That forced fumble totally changed the game as the Jets were about to score, it was a 14 point swing, as the Dolphins drove one of their best drives in the last few years, a masterful 15 play masterclass, that took up 8 minutes and 40 seconds culminating in TE Darren Wallers first TD reception as a Miami Dolphin. It was really something, and that basically took the heart out of the Jets. If that didn’t do it, the officials helped there as well by not giving the Jets any chance.

We play this game in Carolina, and the Panthers are not so unlike our Dolphins. Both teams are 1-3, and both are either in the 20’s or near the 20’s on offense and defense, the Dolphins slightly better on offense (#22) with the Panthers at (#26), and the Panthers a little better on defense at (#19) while our Dolphins are at (#26). The Panthers have only played one home game in their first 4 games and in that game the Panthers obliterated a very talented Atlanta Falcons offense, shutting them out 30-0. Last week they got shellacked by the New England Patriots 42-13, so who knows which team we will face. Besides the drubbing at the hands of the Patriots, despite not playing especially well, we have been in every other game, winning last week, and of course failing to come up big against the Bills with the game still available for the taking.

We will see how Mike McDaniel adjusts to the Hill-less offense. There’s no reason why this offense can’t be a good one, and as we know, this offense will only go as far as QB Tua Tagovailoa will take it. Everyone else will have to step up, we ned that O-line to get healthy. I’m not sure when RG James Daniels will be back, or RT Austin Jackson, and even more importantly, will they play well and be able to finish the season? Tremendous question marks on both, and once again, the poor depth of our O-line rears it’s ugly head as RT Larry Borom invokes memories turnstile RT Marc Colombo, not a good thing. HC Mike McDaniel has Tua staying away from the weak right side and has been exclusively rolling to his left where 2nd year LT Patrick Paul and rookie Jonah Savaiinaea reside. So far it has worked, but as teams study film, and tendencies will be exploited, so they’re going to have to mix that up some. One notable thing in the Jets game was the surprising amount of reps QB Tua Tagovailoa spent under center, and not in the shotgun formation. He seemed more comfortable that way, and more efficient. We’ll see if that continues against the Panthers.

The Panthers feature QB Bryce Williams, along with rookie WR Tet McMillan and slot WR Hunter Renfrow who along with RB Chuba Hubbard, have the most targets with rookie Tet McMillan #1. RB Rico Dowdle backs up Hubbard and is second in carries, but Hubbard is the workhorse. QB Bryce Young hasn’t seemed to have found his stride yet, and has been uneven so far this season. It would be nice to our front 7 come alive. OLB Chop Robinson hasn’t been playing much, and vet OLB Jaelan Phillips has, but hasn’t been much with all the playing time. Phillips has been in coverage with mixed results but seems a few steps slow with the pass rush game. The team has 8 sacks after 4 games, not hideous, but we all thought this potentially could be a strength, maybe it still will.

I really though going into this game, this was a crucial turning point in the season.

If we lost, I figured we have a good chance to win 2 or 3 games and have a top 3 pick.

If we won, we’d have a good chance to win 5 or 6 games and give us a later pick, or heaven forbid win 7 and have a mid-round pick.

I root for us to win during the game, but I’m actually glad we lost this game.

    Kong,

Very similar thoughts to mine. I thought this was one of possibly 5 games we would win after watching last week’s game. It was the game I thought we had the best chance of winning this year.

I didn’t watch the game which has honestly become my normal. Not because I thought we’d lose but just because I don’t enjoy watching our ineptitude anymore. Even after I checked and saw 17-0, I still had better things to do and I’m so glad I did. The complete collapse against one of the worst teams of the past 7 years was not at all surprising. We might be able to beat the Saints, Cincy and Jets again, but I don’t think we can beat anyone else. The Browns have a solid defense and should win. Baltimore will have Jackson back.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I think a lot of Dolphins fans are tuning out at this point.

After we lose to the Chargers next week, sitting at 1-5, the team should be on the verge of quitting on the season, lose to the Browns the following week, and hopefully we’ll see MM fired not long after that. Although, I wouldn’t be surprised if we wait till after the Ravens loss right before the bye.

I can’t recall a GM ever being fired mid-season; I’m sure it’s happened and I just don’t remember, but if it has never happened, I’d be content with being a trend setter in that regard, lol.

    ———

    Mike E,

You’re clearly looking to pin the donkey on somebody today via your vitriol, and of all people, it should NOT be Tua.

Rico “Suave” Dowdle (a backup RB!) put up 206 rushing yards on 23 carries (9.0 YPC).

You’re smarter than that, Bro… to blame it all on Tua.

What’s more? We ran it 14 times today for 19 yards, Brother. You cannot blame that all on Tua, either.

Tua was probably the best player for us on both sides of the ball today, NO BS! And Darren Waller was a close second place for us today as well!

Don’t allow your hatred to get the better of ya, man.

Roll with me! Our O-Line and D-Line are horrible, Bro!

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

And by no means am I stating that Tua was flawless today… but he had to work with what’s in front of him (O-Line).

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

We obviously couldn’t open up the running game (as usual!), in order to make the passing game a legit threat.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I’m with Mike on this, its not about stats, its what you do with the game on the line

if you’re talking about every player being equal, Tua was pretty good today

As we know the NFL has a salary cap, based on that, you have to play according to your cap figure, so when you’re the top earner you have to overcome the shortcomings around you and make plays, especially with a wide open receiver

Tua is so limited now, that he’s playing not to get hurt, and the opponents are taking advantage of it

if we keep him past 2026, we have the dumbest FO in history, unless of course their goal is mid-pack

    • pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

      Tua sucked. No excuses.

  57. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

The last few minutes of the Chargers/Washington game have been crazy, lol.

  58. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

wondering why Tua wasn’t throwing to Waller, on a 3rd down replay they showed Waller 15 yards downfield open to the right away from the defender, but coming into that window was another receiver

Warner was right MMs play designs are retarded

  59. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Eagles lost today. It’d be nice if the Bills lose tonight to finish off the last undefeated team. I know some don’t like celebrating the perfect season, but as a Dolphins fan, I it’s all I have, lol 😭

  62. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

M – Our defense is disgusting. We have become a screen play offense again, 90% of the passes are either at or behind the line of scrimmage, and very few travel past 10 yards. We rely way too much on De’Von Achane. Tua played well for most of the game. If that’s all you want from your QB, then you can sleep well tonight. If your QB gets the ball with a chance to win the game against a shitty team and he chokes and in reality should have been intercepted if Waddle didn’t save his ass, then you can’t be happy. Who cares about most of the game when you have the game in your hands and you can’t/don’t get it done. So I guess what I’m saying is, Tua isn’t our biggest problem, but he’s not an answer to a single one of them!

  63. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Kong – OLD guy here. I don’t actually know what that means. How do I accomplish that?

I saw lots of illegal formations this weekend, college too, and I just don’t get it

I watch all game long players not lined up properly with nothing called, then out of no where there’s a flag for it, just happened to Tampa

why is there such a disconnect with how to line up?

I always here that the lineman must be at least as far forward as the center’s belt, so why doesn’t that apply to the eligible on the line?

on this particular play Tampa had 1 receiver on the right even with the RT, so why is that considered not on the line? If the RT is on the line so is the WR

other times the WR is all the way up to the LOS and the slot WR is even with the RT

My point is why is this important rule taken so lightly by all teams

KC lost a game to Bills 2 yrs ago, because the WR was considered offside (over the LOS) on a go-ahead hook and ladder play late in 4th

  76. New Age's avatar New Age says:

    Dallas has almost their entire OL injured at the moment and still pulled off a blowout today. From ESPN;

Nate Thomas made the first start of his career, filling in for Guyton. Hakeem Adeniji made his first start with the Cowboys at left guard, splitting time with Trevor KeeganBrock Hoffman started his third straight game at center. And T.J. Bass started his second straight at right guard.”

“running back Javonte Williams, who had a career-high 135 rushing yards and scored two touchdowns against the Jets.” They could still run the ball though.

Tua played ok but the problem isn’t injuries, it’s the teaching and planning of the coaching staff. Savaiinaea is terrible but is that because of training? Our new fatties on the DL are on rollerblades. Is that training or just lazy? No one seems to start their first year, even the RBs! Why is that? I don’t see that anywhere else. I just know that our OL is terrible every single year and that can’t always be talent or injuries, can it? The answer is it can’t. It has to be poor teaching.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

All our guys are starting this year because we don’t have any choice. Savaiinaea, Grant and Phillips are all starting, but it’s crazy shit that Ollie Gordon has 18 carries in 4 games. How does a physical running back get into a rhythm getting one carry on a drive and then off the field the next? Why do we operate like that? I understand Achane is now our best player, but you have to give the guy a series or two a game and let him get some valuable reps and maybe he gets in a rhythm and starts showing he can be valuable too

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Even Dante Trader started a game

      • New Age's avatar New Age says:

That’s what they should always do though. Your 1st, 2nd, and third round guys should always be starting or at least playing significant snaps. That’s why you used all that draft capital for them.

You’re right. Ollie Gordon is a perfect example of how fucked up our training system is. For the last three years, McDs Drive-Thru has ‘needed’ a multiple RB system. Two years ago, Mostert had 200+ carries and Achane had 100. Last year they used Achane, Mostert, and Wright. This year, with only two real RBs playing, Achane has 75% of the carries. It makes no sense to not use Gordon and the run game more.

Our DTs are over three thirty each. There’s no reason they are getting washed out. Something stinks in the practices and training given.

2 trade downs as Donte Moore went #1 overall to the Jets

Ty Simpson will climb as the season progresses. Dude’s been a stud since that first game. coming into Athens and beating UGA is really hard. He demolished a pretty solid Vandy team too. Guy is rolling in those revenge games. I wouldn’t mind him if Dante goes 1 like I think he will.

What about Frank Smith as Interim? We might see a different offensive gameplay called if MM gave up play calling duties. I’m surprised he hasn’t given that a shot yet

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Darrell Bevell (QB Coach/Pass game Coordinator) is another experienced coach who has been an OC and an interim HC before. It doesn’t have to be Weaver, you’re right on that one.

Both D and O should be ashamed of themselves.

    …….

The Dolphins scored on their opening three drives to take a 17-0 lead, but mustered just 38 total yards on their ensuring five offensive drives as Carolina finished the game on a 27-7 run.

Tagovailoa threw for 256 yards and three touchdowns, completing 27 of 36 passes, but the Dolphins rushed for just 19 yards — their lowest total since coach Mike McDaniel was hired in 2022.

I said New England was going to be a better team, and they are. Then again, I also said the Jets would be better, so . . .

An Open Letter to Stephen Ross: Time for Change is Now

An Open Letter to Stephen Ross: Time for Change is Now

    Dear Mr. Ross,

I am writing to discuss the Miami Dolphins football team, which you own.

I come in peace, not to curse you out or yell at you for the team’s lack of success on the field, and hours after another disappointing loss, like we had today against the Carolina Panthers.

I come to you to let you know, speaking for myself, and on behalf of many other good, loyal Miami Dolphins fans, to remind you that we need you.

We need you as the owner to care more about this team than we, the fans, do.

We need you, as the owner, to not accept mediocrity and accept the losses and the decline we see on the field each week.

We need you, as the owner, to be the one responsible for the turnaround of this organization, not the one who lets it continue to sink into despair.

I understand firing people is never easy or fun.

I understand Mike McDaniel and Chris Grier are good people at heart and are trying their best.

But as the old saying goes, “This is Business, It’s not Personal.”

Miami Dolphins fans have shown up year in and year out, no matter how bad the team has been at times, and spent good, hard-earned money, and, more importantly, given up their time to follow and support this organization.

This fan base goes all in to support the Dolphins Challenge Cancer.

This fan base goes all in to support food drives and all the projects started by the great Jason Jenkins with Football Unites.

This fan base supports player charities every chance we get.

And we, the fans, do those things because it’s the right thing to do, it’s good for the community, and it makes us proud to be Dolphins fans and have our organization be a part of making the world a better place.

All of that, though, is tied back to this football team that you own.

Right now, this fan base deserves better.

Only you can give this fan base better.

As we sit today, Miami is 1-4, and just watching the games, it appears things will get worse before they get better on the field.

As Dolphins fans, we have been here before.

With teams you have owned, and with teams your predecessor, Wayne Huizenga, has owned.

We know a lost season when we see one, and right now, the 2025 Dolphins are a lost season.

With that said, getting through the next 12 weeks of this season will be a challenge.

If we are going to keep it real and not lie to ourselves, most Sundays will likely resemble this Sunday, with a loss rather than a win.

However, one thing football fans, sports fans, and Miami Dolphins fans yearn for is hope!

Suffering through the losses is one thing; having a pit in your stomach, knowing there is no hope with this organization, is another.

And that is where the majority of Miami Dolphins fans are at this point, feeling there is no hope.

    That change isn’t forthcoming.

Show Miami Dolphins fans that you, Mr. Stephen Ross, care.

Give us, the fans, something as a sign that these results we see on the field are unacceptable.

The Time for Change is Now!

Give Dolphins fans hope that next season, 2026, will be different than this season, and yes, you can tell us that now with actions, not words.

And how you can do that is to start the process of removing the people responsible for this season and the past few seasons that have given us unacceptable results.

I know that, as an owner, you do not want to be viewed as someone who is challenging to work for and overreacts in letting people go.

But all Dolphins fans know the truth.

That isn’t the case, and that is not who you are

Chris Grier needs to go, …now!

Chris has been with this organization in some capacity for 25 years, serving as the general manager for the past 9 years.

Grier has been here longer than you, Mr. Ross.

If you asked Chris to come into your office tomorrow morning and list all the accomplishments this organization has achieved during his time as General Manager, it would be a short meeting.

    There is no list.

    No division titles.

    No playoff wins.

No MVPs or superstars drafted on his watch.

You have given Chris Grier ample time to prove himself and have success, but he has come up short.

Nobody in NFL circles would criticize you for letting that man go.

This is a results-oriented business, and the results just aren’t there.

Next, it’s time to let Mike McDaniel go as well.

I know Mike has a very likable personality, but again, this is a results-oriented business and the results aren’t there.

Mike is in year 4; he has had ample time to achieve success, especially given the roster he was given and the money spent.

The alarming thing about both Grier and McDaniel is that things seem to be getting worse, with no progress, only regression.

This team was under .500 in 2024; they are 1-4 currently, and they just blew a 17-point lead to one of the worst teams in the sport.

The time for change is now.

This loyal Dolphins fanbase is looking at you, Mr. Ross, to do the right thing by them.

Sure, fans can not show up, sure, fans can speak with their wallet, sure, fans can fly banners over the stadium to voice their displeasure.

But in reality, we, the fans, hope you will do the right thing and show us that you care as much as we do.

And that losing has reached a point where it is unacceptable at this time.

Dolphins fans are on the brink of apathy, and that is something that should keep you up at night.

Once fans stop caring, you may have lost them forever.

    Give the fans some hope.

Give the fans a signal, change is coming, big changes are coming.

And that all starts with one little action, of firing someone or a couple of people now.

We thank you, Mr. Ross, for the money you spent on renovating Hard Rock Stadium to make it a state-of-the-art venue for us to attend games at.

We thank you, Mr. Ross, for bringing F1 to South Florida.

We thank you, Mr. Ross, for being an owner who writes the checks and trusts the football people you hire to make decisions, and who does not get involved in roster decisions.

This fan base would like to thank you once again, but this time for bringing in new personnel to run the football operations and to hopefully improve the on-the-field product.

I know you have preached patience, but there comes a point when patience runs out.

For Dolphins fans like myself and many others, patience has run out.

Please bring the change to the Miami Dolphins that is sorely needed.

Dolphins fans are rooting for you and need you now.

    Sincerely,

    Michael Oliva

Guy on Dolphins Talk says trade Jaelan Phillips for a 3rd RD pick, time to start getting value for some players. There was only 1 player on this team that might have fetched a 3rd and he’s on IR now. If Phillips had 6 sacks maybe he’d get you a 4th or 5th. Same for Chubb.

  92. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

well we lost yesterday’s game because of issues that have been issues as long as I can remember and that Grier fails to address properly again and again.

Our SOFT in the center Defense cannot stop the run (239 yards rushing yesterday @ 7.46 yards per rush average!!) while our SOFT O line can’t block worth a shit. Achane averaged 1.6 yards per carry and Gordon averaged -.7 yards per carry!

    Did Grier get fire yet?

NO? OK, I check again next week. Take care guys.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Ollie Gordon got 3 carries, and I’m nearly certain that he didn’t get 2 consecutive carries. That is absolutely ridiculous!

  93. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I think Bevell would be the better choice to call plays if/when MM gets the boot. That said, it will be the same OL and the same QB, so….

  94. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Too bad we won’t be in the same position next year as the Pats were this year. The main difference will be cap. Pats got their new HC, a good one at that, but had over 100m in cap to spend.

Dolphins will have about 20m (more or less) after they release Tyreek for their new HC/GM. They will have a ton of spots to fill with all these 1yr contracts.

    • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Chris Grier has destroyed this team and it’s immediate future. He has fucked the future GM for the next 5 years. (good thing the NFL only allows void contracts that far out or he would have fucked more!!)

  95. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

So do you kool-aid swillers finally agree that the “window” is closed?

  96. rich0322's avatar rich0322 says:

BBM, that was a lot of picks, but loved the players you chose.

“At 6’2″, 225 pounds, he’s a bit underweight for the position, but already as a true junior, he’s become one of the more instinctive and versatile defenders in college football. In spite of his lacking mass, he plays with no hesitation in contact situations. He knows how to engage blocks to decouple and stay clean in pursuit, and he has high-level quickness, corrective athleticism, closing explosiveness, and range tracking sideline-to-sideline. His physicality and IQ make him a constant threat around the ball on early downs, and on passing downs, he knows how to use his functional athleticism to attack angles on the blitz and make passers uncomfortable.”

Who does this sound like to you. He reminds of one of the best to ever play in Miami, Zach Thomas!!! …but a little faster. This is what is said and what I have seen on the field about Whit Weeks and I wouldn’t hesitate to draft him on day 2.

    • rich0322's avatar rich0322 says:

The other player who is having a very good year so far is Chris Brazzell from my Tennessee Vols. I like players who come up big in big games. Despite losing in overtime to Georgia, Brazzell had a huge game with 6 receptions for 177 yards and 3 TDS. He’s been playing like a complete stud in his 2nd year with Tennessee.

  97. Randy's avatar Randy says:

I don’t know why everyone is so upset. We knocked off one of our biggest competitors for the #1 draft pick. Looks like a win to me! Ow for those other losers…..
