2025 Season – Game 5 – Dolphins @ Panthers

The Miami Dolphins finally got in the win column. The record now stands at 1-3, while of course the Buffalo Bills are undefeated at 4-0. The win itself was unimpressive, it felt like the Jets were not only playing against our Dolphins on the field, but the officiating crew as well. The Jets were hit with 13 penalties for 101 yards while the Dolphins only 6 penalties for 40 yards. I’m not going to name all the penalties that could/should have been called on our team but the two egregious misses in my view were the tackle of QB Justin Fields out of bounds, he was so clearly already out of bounds and was tackled at least 3-5 yards beyond being out of bounds. That should have been a 15 yard personal foul. The other one was Jets 2nd TE Jeremy Ruckert caught a pass and was tackled, and then a good second to a second and a half later, a Dolphins defender decided to dive on his back way too late. Despite the fact that the game was in the evening, it was actually still 86 degrees and plenty hot, but of course the blazing sun was not a factor.

It’s one game, but I can admit at least as far as his initial game performance, that TE Darren Waller, who I mocked GM Chris Grier relentlessly for played very well and made his presence felt. Obviously, he has to do a whole lot more, because one huge factor in my criticism is that I don’t think Waller is going to be here long, but if he keeps being making big plays and helping the team, I may just end up being very wrong about that move. In any case, as any Dolphins fan knows, we lost WR Tyreek Hill to a devastating knee injury, a dislocation, which included torn ligaments as well, most notably his ACL. I’m not sure if we’ll ever see Tyreek Hill in a Miami Dolphins uniform again, but I do think the people that made fun of Tyreek’s smiling and clapping were out of line, I think he was thanking the fans applause and that’s all it was.

Jaylen Waddle time. It’s not that Jaylen Waddle has to be Tyreek Hill, he just has to be Jaylen Waddle before Tyreek was even here. Or, even Jaylen Waddle of 2022 when Tyreek first came to the Dolphins. He had back to back 1000 yard receiving seasons with 14 total TD’s over those 2 years. In 2021 he was almost like a possession receiver, but in 2022, he became a big play receiver with an outstanding 18.1 YPR with 1356 yards receiving and 8 TD’s. Let’s face it, the offense runs through RB De’Von Achane, but Waddle has to be involved. He may not be an elite #1 WR like Jamar Chase or Justin Jefferson or Puka Nacua, but he doesn’t have to be any of that. I prefer a more balanced attack anyway, so keep letting Achane do his thing, if Waller can keep contributing that would be great, and WR Malik Washington has also proven he’s a very shifty runner with the football and runs good routes and understands his assignments. I’d like to see them ramp up RB Ollie Gordon’s carries too, but it sure is hard to not want to feed Achane, he’s so good.

So what’s up with the rookies? Well, so far not a whole lot of good to report. Our two first picks, DT Kenneth Grant who we took at RD 1 #13 and LG Jonah Savaiinaea have not played well. Grant was supposed to a stout interior defender who really plays the run well, and he’s been nearly invisible. Savaiinaea who required another Grier trade up hasn’t looked the part at LG at all yet. The other draft piocks haven’t fared much better, DT’s Jordan Phillips and Zeek Biggers have been playing but not showing up quite yet, and even RB Ollie Gordon has only 18 carries as so far though 5 games, not even 5 per game. Who knows what’s going on with last year’s Grier’s trade up, RB Jaylen Wright who has yet to play this season.

You want some good news? Grier’s late piickups, CB’s Rasul Douglas and CB Jack Jones have been playing pretty well. Not outstanding, but both played extremely well against the Jets. Jack Jones had what could easily be the biggest play of the game punching out the football from Jets RB Braelon Allen near the goal line. That forced fumble totally changed the game as the Jets were about to score, it was a 14 point swing, as the Dolphins drove one of their best drives in the last few years, a masterful 15 play masterclass, that took up 8 minutes and 40 seconds culminating in TE Darren Wallers first TD reception as a Miami Dolphin. It was really something, and that basically took the heart out of the Jets. If that didn’t do it, the officials helped there as well by not giving the Jets any chance.

We play this game in Carolina, and the Panthers are not so unlike our Dolphins. Both teams are 1-3, and both are either in the 20’s or near the 20’s on offense and defense, the Dolphins slightly better on offense (#22) with the Panthers at (#26), and the Panthers a little better on defense at (#19) while our Dolphins are at (#26). The Panthers have only played one home game in their first 4 games and in that game the Panthers obliterated a very talented Atlanta Falcons offense, shutting them out 30-0. Last week they got shellacked by the New England Patriots 42-13, so who knows which team we will face. Besides the drubbing at the hands of the Patriots, despite not playing especially well, we have been in every other game, winning last week, and of course failing to come up big against the Bills with the game still available for the taking.

We will see how Mike McDaniel adjusts to the Hill-less offense. There’s no reason why this offense can’t be a good one, and as we know, this offense will only go as far as QB Tua Tagovailoa will take it. Everyone else will have to step up, we ned that O-line to get healthy. I’m not sure when RG James Daniels will be back, or RT Austin Jackson, and even more importantly, will they play well and be able to finish the season? Tremendous question marks on both, and once again, the poor depth of our O-line rears it’s ugly head as RT Larry Borom invokes memories turnstile RT Marc Colombo, not a good thing. HC Mike McDaniel has Tua staying away from the weak right side and has been exclusively rolling to his left where 2nd year LT Patrick Paul and rookie Jonah Savaiinaea reside. So far it has worked, but as teams study film, and tendencies will be exploited, so they’re going to have to mix that up some. One notable thing in the Jets game was the surprising amount of reps QB Tua Tagovailoa spent under center, and not in the shotgun formation. He seemed more comfortable that way, and more efficient. We’ll see if that continues against the Panthers.

The Panthers feature QB Bryce Williams, along with rookie WR Tet McMillan and slot WR Hunter Renfrow who along with RB Chuba Hubbard, have the most targets with rookie Tet McMillan #1. RB Rico Dowdle backs up Hubbard and is second in carries, but Hubbard is the workhorse. QB Bryce Young hasn’t seemed to have found his stride yet, and has been uneven so far this season. It would be nice to our front 7 come alive. OLB Chop Robinson hasn’t been playing much, and vet OLB Jaelan Phillips has, but hasn’t been much with all the playing time. Phillips has been in coverage with mixed results but seems a few steps slow with the pass rush game. The team has 8 sacks after 4 games, not hideous, but we all thought this potentially could be a strength, maybe it still will.

An Open Letter to Stephen Ross: Time for Change is Now

    ————–

I concur with this open letter 100%.

Don’t know if Ross will pull the trigger in-season (perhaps he wants to save face as a professional), but the firings are coming eventually… that is, unless we somehow turn it around… and I don’t see that happening.

  2. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

The only thing that would scare me if Ross fired Coach McD and/or GM Grier right now? Ross has already shown the propensity to prematurely tamper with coaches and players.

It would be our luck that we again end up losing valuable draft picks, just because Ross wants to get head-start on hiring.

  3. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

    https://phinphanatic.com/dolphins-walking-directly-inevitable-quinn-ewers-decision

A couple of more weeks and I agree with this article. We need to see what Quinn Ewers can bring and we might as well do it now rather than not at all.

An interim head coach could get away with it. Fire Mike McDaniel NOW!

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

YES, at some point in time this season, we’re going to want to see if Ewers is a keeper.

Doesn’t even matter if Tua is KILLING IT, the future HC and GM are going to hitch their wagons on a healthy young QB via the Draft.

  4. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

    Mike E,

See if you agree with me here (I know you will). Even if Tua ends up throwing for over 5,000 yards this season, with 45 TDs, 6 INTs, and a passer rating over 115.0… the new HC and GM are going to find a new QB.

WHY? One more concussion could find Tua retiring from football. Then what will do? We’d better figure out if Ewers has a future here and prepare to draft a QB in the 1st round, IMO.

  5. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

It sure would be nice to see what our O-Line would look like with both James Daniels and Austin Jackson in there. Maybe bench Big Jonah for a game or two and replace him with a vet. GM Grier can’t seem to find 5 healthy, solid O-Linemen… much less having continuity from last season, due to GM Grier.

And as I’ve already mentioned a week ago, Anthony Weaver is working with 7 or 8 NEW players as starters on Defense, who are unfamiliar with his system. There is little to zero continuity from last season, due to GM Grier.

  6. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

“Any play that I would have picked other than the ones that I was calling, I guess, stand a chance to be productive,” McDaniel said.

    Clueless loser

  7. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

MF13, I was watching Jonah all game and he fucked up almost every play. He was awful. Worse than awful, he was impeding other players on our side. I was texting MikeE video clips during the game. Marshmallow Soft! No balance! Tripping over his own feet. Whiffing on blocks. STANDING BY and watching plays…The kid needs to be benched.

    • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

he was single-handedly killing drives all by himself. Stupid shit like trying to double with the center and letting the DT go right past him with no effort to stop HIS guy. On one play his missed his block on the DT and then ran up the field 5 yards and missed a block on the LB who made the tackle on Achane behind the line. (FIVE YARDS behind him!)

  8. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    M13,

I believe football is a team sport, and I’ve never really believed that winning is about one position. With how the NFL has changed the game by favoring QBs in every single way and ruined fair competition, I’m beginning to change my mind. QBs have been saying it for years, but I think their job is to win….not put up stats.

Winning is still a team effort, but I think they’ve allowed QBs to have far more impact on winning than any other player on the field. So, maybe win more. Everybody says football games come down to a few plays to win or lose at the end. Start making winning plays when it’s on the line. That’s what the $50M is for.

  9. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

The best part of the embarrassment that was yesterday’s game is the McDaniel blamed it on Anthony Weaver. His offense couldn’t run for more than 18 yards in an entire game, but he is going to blame Weaver for the loss?

This is the SECOND worst rushing total in Dolphins history, behind the -10 yard total in 1966 to the Balt Colts.

  10. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

    Rockphin,

Man, I hear ya on Big Jonah… he’s totally not ready for the NFL at this time, and it’s a shame. There were Guards drafted much later this past Draft who are killing it. But it cost us a TRADE-UP to get Big Jonah? SMH 😡

  11. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

    Randy,

And I hear you, too, man. Goodell has radically changed the game we all grew up on… and I miss that game we all grew up on.

I believe you’re right about it becoming a sport that is single-handedly won or lost by QB play… and that Tua isn’t worth $50M/year.

  12. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

    Randy,

What are your thoughts on allowing Big Jonah to play via trial by fire? Should he be benched or should he continue to start to get the green washed off of him?

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

And same question to you regarding Kenneth Grant.

    • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

I know you addressed this to Randy and not me, but personally I want Jonah to keep playing. Burn through those rookie mistakes now. MAYBE he will get better. In the meantime though he only HELPS our draft position.

  13. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

If you have a pitcher that gives you 6 strong innings, your ace pitcher, and then in the 7th inning, he walks 2 batters, and gives up a 3 run HR and you lose 3-2. Do you say “Oh well, he pitched a really good game, struck out 10 guys and gave up 4 hits?” That’s what playing well for most of the game except the last drive, which determines whether you win or lose is like to me. No one cares that you had 3 TD’s, 256 yards, it’s what you do with the game on the line. Did he play poorly? No, but he played poorly on the important drive of the game, and that counts!

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Yeah, I’m coming around to what you’re sayin’, Bro.

But quite honestly, it doesn’t matter any longer… UNLESS Steve Ross keeps both Coach McD and GM Grier. I do NOT see that happening.

Tua will be lucky to survive this season, and even if he does, the new HC/GM will hitch their wagons to a new QB next Draft.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

By the way, I DO love baseball analogies when it comes to football, and vice-versa!

    • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

With the game on the line, two incompletions and a 15 yard sack on 3rd down. That’s Tua.

  14. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Jaelan Phillips got his first sack of the season in the third quarter of the fifth game….

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Not good, though he’s been around the ball a lot (pressures). He is responsible for at least 2 of Chubb’s sacks.

  15. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    M13,

As long as I feel good about the culture in the locker room in that it is supportive and can help grow these rookies and our coaches can do their job, I’d keep playing them as much as possible.

It’s way too early to make any final decisions on any rookie. Keep playing them and let them learn what it’s like to play against guys just as big, strong, fast and athletic as you…and you realize being a pro is more than that.

    QB

T (yes, BBM is quite correct on this, IMO)

    IOL

    EDGE

    CB

    S

He’s just not motivated to get past the log-in issues he’s been having with wordpress to post while the Dolphins suck. He is well though and is “lurking” occasionally. I told him I would let everyone know he is doing OK and that we all shouldn’t worry.

  22. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

I know we are Dolphin-centric here, but has anyone else noticed that the “Great” Baltimore Ravens have the same record as the shitty Dolphins?

    2(35) DJ McKinney-CB, Colorado

    White Boy Rick

    ·

Tua is the only qb in the history of the NFL that is required to have not one but TWO game winning drives

    *********************************

This truly sums up the blind Tua love and forgetting the importance of actually winning games. These people are the ones handing out participation trophies. Fucking Drake Maye had a game winning drive! Trevor Lawrence had a game winning drive. Baker Mayfield has one almost every week. Baker doesn’t sit on his laurels after scoring 28 points and then the other team ties it up. He doesn’t say I already got you guys the game winning drive, WTF? No, he goes back out on the field like a fucking leader and goes and gets his team that win! Tua Nocandoa!

  35. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Really tired of watching other teams who have QB’s who can throw but also get it done with their legs. Both QB’s were the leading rushers for their teams last night. Mahomes was the leading rusher for the game. Great effort by Lawrence last night. I enjoyed watching Mahomes give up the 99 yard pick 6. He still brought his team back to take the lead but left Lawrence too much time and he pulled out the win.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

that’s what I’ve been saying Tua is limited, we can’t win with him, especially now with the bloated contract

      Tua’s limitations:

      not a run threat

can’t stand in pocket and take a big hit just after he releases

arm strength, which really hurts under pressure and/or on the move

      can’t read a D

      doesn’t go thru progressions well

everything else compounded by trying not to get hurt

      • New Age's avatar New Age says:

There’s not really much else a QB is required to do. Read the defense, pass well, take hits, run from pressure, throw the ball away. That’s basically it and he does none of it well.

  36. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Trading Tua prior to the deadline this year would clear 25.5m in cap. It will also cause a 45.2m dead cap in 2026 putting us way in the negative. BUT, no dead cap on Tua after 2026.

Say right now we have zero cap next year. This trade would put us at -45.2m for 2026. You just carry over the 25.5m in cap we clear in 2025 to 2026. That would leave us at -19.7m. Release Tyreek prior to the new league year and that clears another 23.6m. We would be in the positive by 3.9m.

That is only if you trade him prior to the trade deadline this year where you can clear cap to roll over. Waiting until prior to the start of next league year, you are stuck with the 45.2m dead cap, minus 23.6m from a Tyreek release and you are still down 19.7m you have to find from somewhere.

HOWEVER, you could work a deal with a team to trade Tua post 6/1 in 2026. That would be huge as it would clear 43m in 2026 cap, though won’t have that money to spend until 6/2 of next year and the first wave F/A will be over. Who cares, you’re blowing it up anyway. It will cause a 31.8m dead cap in 2027, but, right now, we are projected to have over 100m in cap in 2027. I don’t see anyone significant we NEED to resign after the 2026 season other than Achane.

We just need to find a team as stupid as the Cleveland Browns. Hmm?

wait until the end of season to can MM, as much as I hate him, the interim might actually win some games

  54. herdfan's avatar herdfan says:

    Rex Ryan?!?! NO! Just no.

As for what MM wears, I agree, I think it’s not the best look but if he could coach, have some discipline on this team and WIN…he could dress in a clown suit for all I care.

  55. Randy's avatar Randy says:

I’m not sure the NFL or society will allow coaches like Gruden anymore. We’re all too soft.

I don’t think Ross will ever consider hiring Chucky. Did you see his emails that he got fired for? Yeah, Ross will not be hiring him.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Forget that he’d be the best HC for this team in decades, he said mean things in his emails. Oy! He wanted Jim Harbaugh, you don’t think he’s said some shit?

      • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

There is a huge difference in the public perception between “you don’t think he said some shit” and what was in those e-mails. He would still be a coach in the NFL if everyone didn’t know about those emails.

  59. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Chargers officially placed running back Omarion Hampton on injured reserve today. In a corresponding move, they signed running back Kimani Vidal to the active roster from the practice squad, and signed running back Nyheim Hines to the practice squad.

We can’t really blame our rookie DL for getting gashed in the run game last week. Grant only played 30 of 70 defensive snaps and Jordan Phillips only played 23 of 70 snaps.

Thanks! I’m going to start watching IU games. That seems like a team riddled with future NFL talent.

    ———

Not a lot of “high end” talent but very well coached good talent that will translate to the NFL.

Players to watch from IU who will probably get drafted: QB Mendoza, WR’s Sarratt and Cooper, Safety Amare Farrell, CB D’Angelo Ponds, ILB Aiden Fisher, Center Pat Coogan, OT Carter Smith and RB Roman Hemby.

  68. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Alec Ingold has fallen off, IMO. Ever since that concussion. He’s getting 4.8m this year and only playing 37% of snaps. Next year he’s getting 5m.

I know FB’s don’t get that many snaps on O and he plays special teams but not worth paying a FB 5m, IMO.

  69. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I wouldn’t mind cutting/trading Ingold after the season then snatching up IU’s FB/TE Riley Nowakowski, 6’1, 249 as an UDFA to replace Ingold. Nokakowski is a FB name if I ever heard one. lol

  76. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I wonder what this weekends game plan will be with a QB who has limited arm strength and limited mobility to begin with coupled with a sore thumb and bad hip.

I also wonder what the over/under will be on the number passes thrown to receivers behind the LOS.

  77. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

My fear is Ross will go after BB.

Members of Belichick’s coaching staff have already spoken to other schools that are expected to be in CFB Playoff about taking on roles during the postseason. From one coach: “the rats are leaving the ship”.

Some staffers believe a change will come within two weeks

  78. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I think Grier and these coaches can’t recognize good talent but also the coaches can’t or at least seem to struggle to bring the best out of these players.

Teair Tart was kicked to the curb by the Dolphins prior to cuts last year because “he wasn’t a scheme fit”. Bullshit, I say. Then replace him with NT Robert Cooper who didn’t make the team nor made last years PS.

Right now, Tart is the #15 ranked DL in the NFL and this list INCLUDES Edge rushers. Not counting Edge rushers, Tart is the #5 DT in the NFL ahead of players like Quinnen Williams, Chris Jones and many others.

Tart is making his return to Miami this weekend starting for the Chargers.

    Scheme fit, my ass!

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I got that wrong. TEAIR TART IS THE #1 RANKED DT IN THE NFL. Sorry about that. I was looking at the Team Defense ranking. Tart was the top player on the 15th ranked defense but IS the #1 DT in the NFL.

Also, Tart is the #1 DT in the NFL in run defense with a PFF grade of 91.4 through 5 games.

If he is not a scheme fit, then our defensive scheme sucks! Obviously

I wish we’d made a move to fire MM if we are gonna anyway when the Iowa State coach was between contracts. I think he’s a really good young coach. It was probably too early to pull the trigger, but that’s the sort of forward thinking I’d like to see in a FO. I have no idea if he would’ve been open to it, but I would’ve been at his doorstep asking.

  81. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Randy, we won’t be able to hire a new HC until after Grier gets the Axe and a new GM is in place. Firing MM is a much smaller part of the equation than getting the next GM in place to make the decision on HC.

I don’t usually watch the Super Bowl Halftime Show either, with rare exception. I love Fergie, so I watched it 2011.

And I definitely watched it in 2022 when it was West Coast (Dr. Dre) as the headliner… I’m of that time period as a producer/artist and persuasion.

I don’t like satanism, so I’ll be boycotting this Bad Bunny at halftime.

At our Super Bowl parties, for the halftime show the last decade or so we always turn the sound down and play music as contrasting as possible to whatever genre the show is.
