2025 Season – Game 13 – Dolphins @ Jets

The Miami Dolphins pursuit of a playoff berth continues! Still alive! I know some of you can laugh along with me as I picture the Black Knight in Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

Yep, that’s our Dolphins still alive and fighting for a practically unattainable playoff berth. It’s basically a 1% chance at the moment, and that’s ONLY if the Dolphins run the table, winning the next 5 games against the Jets, Steelers, Bengals, Buccaneers and then the season finale against the New England Patriots. You know how we discuss here (on social media) how social media is ruining this country, world, society, or all of the above? You know what it’s ruining for me? Being a fan of the Miami Dolphins. Dolphins fan brethren spending time belittling the New England Patriots and their sterling 11-2 record. Making light of their schedule (practically the same damn schedule we play save for 3 games. They played the Titans, we played the Colts. They played the Giants, we played the Commanders and then they played the Raiders while we played the Chargers. Just a big fat reminder, we’re 5-7 and they’re 11-2. Stop being a pussy and belittle a team that has righted themselves, potentially have found their franchise QB and actually built a strong roster unlike just filling the roster with players like Grier did for years here. Sorry Markey, he will never get a front line Exec job in the NFL again, certainly nothing in the vein of being in control of player/personnel. I know, sometimes reality sucks, but it’s still reality.

Then there’s the amazingly large group of Dolphins fans still either with an allegiance to our current starting QB Tua Tagovailoa, or those that just think because he’s making a gazillion dollars next season that he MUST be our starting QB, both now and in 2026. For the millionth time, that money is spent just the same whether he plays or sits and gets splinters on the bench. If we do what must be done, we will draft a QB next season and that QB will have a fair opportunity to seize the starting job. Why, you may ask? This is Tua’s 6th season, and 4th such season with the same Head Coach and offensive system. He’s worse than ever, but somehow he’s going to get better next season? All we need to do is. fix the O-line and get stronger on defense and give him better receivers and blah blah blah. We’ve been hearing that same old tired shit for far too long. You can’t build a perfect team for a tin man with no oil in sight, scarecrow with no available heart, or a cowardly lion with no courage. Tua is all 3 characters in one. He moves like a 60 year old, and at 62, I think I could give Tua a run for his money both in a footrace and throwing the ball downfield. He has no courage, that went out the window with his last concussion or hip injury, doesn’t matter. He routinely comes up short when we need him to do more. His brain just might be scrambled eggs, because sometimes you wonder what he’s thinking, or IF he’s thinking. One second a defender is in hot pursuit of him and he forgets he’s there and gets taken down for a silly looking sack. He runs towards the first down marker and then goes into his slide about a yard and a half early and comes up short. You would think “The Frajeel” practices doing that 1,000,000 times in practice because he does it so often in the game.

Anyway, the charade continues and I guess in some way, our final record this season will determine what action or inaction this front office will make. Winning a few meaningless game and either getting closer to .500 or perhaps miraculously surpassing .500 by going 9-8 shouldn’t make this front office think that everything is alright. If you’ve seen Goodfellas “It’s not alright Spider!!!” It’s not. Don’t waste another precious season and draft class and free agency trying to get this team perfect for Tua and Mike McDaniel. Please, I beg of you. If somehow we manage to make the playoffs, I can almost assure you we will be in for a supreme ass kicking from whichever team we should play. I would actually love it if it were the New England Patriots who many Dolphins disparage as playing a weak schedule. How fitting would that be if they put up a shutout like maybe 30-0 on us? If that were the turning point that made us abandon “calling” our poker hand and staying the same for 2026, then so be it.

At this point in time, I can agree with Markey that firing Chris Grier was just a move to give unhappy fans a sacrifice. I hope they’re not fooled by these narrow margin victories against uninspired teams like the Commanders and the Saints. I swear if they sat Achane for a game we’d really see just how pathetic this offense can be. He does it all, and is producing on his own here. He’s been unbelievable, finding creases, breaking tackles not with brute physicality, but with elusiveness not seen here since Reggie Bush. This offense would be toast, just like our QB. Mike McDaniel sees the writing on the wall, and he’s literally going to run Achane into the ground to try and keep winning. Achane probably doesn’t mind either, the more touches he gets, the more $$$$$ he’s going to get either in the offseason or during next season (if we’re smart), or if we’re stupid, in Free Agency in 2027. Either way, this is only boosting his future paycheck.

So this week we travel to New Joisey to play the Jets who probably don’t care about this game any more than I do. I know and understand that some of you just want to beat the Jets no matter what and I feel ya, but I truly couldn’t care less. I will feel zero joy with a win, or loss. I guess maybe a bit more joy with a loss because it would end the nonsensical “playoff run”. Once that’s over, maybe the big boys will actually start evaluating what to do for 2026, and hopefully, that includes compiling a list of NFL Execs from a bunch of good organizations with winning culture. I mean it’s been 25 years + since we’ve won a playoff game, you think it’s high time to find the right GM to build a winner, instead of settling for a guy you hired and then elevated to interim GM that came from two losing organizations (Bears and Raiders), AND, neither of the two hired him as GM. If he wasn’t good enough for them, and they saw him firsthand, WHY ON EARTH IS HE GOOD ENOUGH FOR US?

It’s going to be interesting Monday night vs the Steelers. Looks like game time temp is going to be around 20 degrees, real feel of 8 degrees with 18 mph wind gusts.

So you’re saying Tua will probably be out for this game whether or not he actually plays then?

Isn’t it vets who are supposed to help rookies and make them better? We’re now expecting a rookie to make a vet better? More insanity.

    ———-

Yeah, it’s supposed to work that way… unless the rook is such a liability that he brings the play of vets down. That is, unless anybody thinks Zach Sieler is mailing it in this season after getting his well deserved extension. I highly doubt that’s the case with Sieler… it’s not in his character to do so.

This much is certain: Kenneth Grant is no Christian Wilkins, Calais Campbell, or Walter Nolen… at least not YET.

I agree with you, Randy, that Grant is a little raw and will need some time to get stronger. So why did we draft him over the polished Nolen when the team needed to win NOW? I mean, it’s not like the GM (who has already been fired) and the entire coaching staff have 2 more seasons to wait on Grant to finally blossom.

Same thing on the other side of the ball with Big Jonah. Now we know why General Grief got fired WHEN he did. And failure to reach the playoffs for a second consecutive season tells me Capri McD and his entire staff (minus Anthony Weaver) are going to get fired as well.

Moral of the story: you DON’T draft developmental players when you MUST win now or face the guillotine. Any other team that drafted Grant and Big Jonah (except for maybe the stej, LOL) would have them on the bench until they were ready to become full-time starters… or at the most have them gain experience as part time/rotational players from time to time.

  5. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

To be painfully honest, RIGHT NOW, one could argue that Walter Nolen’s floor could be higher than Kenneth Grant’s ceiling. Now of course, that could all change over time… which is something General Grief and Capri McD don’t have: TIME.

  6. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    M13,

Can’t Grant and Nolen eventually both be good players? He looked fresh and quick in one game, which was his first after sitting out for months and playing against guys who’ve already played half a season. I’m not surprised he looked like he did. We’ll see if he can continue that. He did the one thing I thought he needed to do which was to put on weight?

Grant is naturally a bigger guy. I think they both have upside. I just think Grant gives you more versatility in where he plays. I don’t really want Grant playing inside a lot, but he can. Nolen doesn’t give you that option. He really isn’t a guy who gives you much against the run or controlling gaps. His game is quick twitch and penetration. We’ll see if he develops into a more well rounded professional DL.

  7. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    M13,

The mistake was anybody believing this team was at a “win now” point. ANYBODY who thought that was wrong, but they won’t admit it now. It’s that simple…and that’s been proven.

Also, you do understand that Nolen is not a team defense type guy. He’s not occupying double teams. He’s not doing twists where he draws defenders for other guys to get loose. Sieler has benefited from playing alongside guys who did that for him so he could get home. Nolen ain’t that guy, so I don’t see how he would be making Sieler better.

    ————

ABSOLUTELY! That’s why I said in reference to Grant, “YET”. We concur that it’s going to take some time for Grant to develop, get more strength, and become a good/great player.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

But did you really think General Grief had 2 to 3 years to wait for Grant to reach his ceiling? Same applies to Capri McD: do you really think he has 2 to 3 years to wait for Grant to reach his ceiling?

    ———–

Randy, are you certain you know who Walter Nolen is? For the n-teenth time, Nolen was the #1 run-defender in the nation last season. HE is the guy we needed to contain the run, not Grant. Ya CANNOT run on Nolen… that is his calling card!

Scouts/pundits/draftniks etc ALL agree that what Nolen needs to work on is his pass-rushing prowess… not the other way around! But in Nolen, he has all the tools and the freakish athleticm to become a premiere pass-rusher. He’s not there yet, but he’s already flashing in his rookie campaign.

I do NOT understand where you’re coming from, thinking Nolen can’t defend against the run! That’s like confusing Tua for Lamar Jackson in terms of running the football!

  10. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    M13,

I watched him play. Are you doing more than reading comments by others? Yes, he needs to work on hand usage to go long with his quickness in pass rush. He’s a pro now. Playing against the run is much different. His tendency to play too high and anchor will be issues in the pros. A really good penetrator can grade out good against the run by just disrupting the rushing lanes quickly. In the pros, that’s usually not how it works. I need to see him prove he can’t be moved with leverage. It’s all technique stuff if he can maintain his size, but I see him as a classic 3 technique.

I also needed to see Grant play with more useful power and a more aggressive personality. He also has a lot to work on in terms of technique. I wish Grant played with Nolen’s attitude. They are rookies. They both have plenty to work on .

So far this season, Phillips and even Biggers has looked more aggressive than Grant (at least to me) Grant has been a minor disappointment to me because of his draft pedigree. He does seem to be growing into the position throughout the season.

Grant has had 72 more snaps and Phillips has 25 total tackles and Grant has 23 total tackles.

  13. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

I have seen Grant “playing patty-cake” way too many times this year. You CANNOT get around an NFL guard with head fakes. Way too many times do I see him getting stood up and doing this weird head fake kind of move left, right, left but not going anywhere.
