2025 Season – Game 16 – Buccaneers @ Dolphins

The season is nearly over, this is the next to the last week of the NFL season, especially for us Miami Dolphins fans, because we won’t be participating in the playoffs this season. Yes, it was another disappointing season for us Dolphins fans. So any things remain up in the air for this franchise, but one decision was made, and whether it was permanent or temporary, I was thrilled that QB Tua Tagovailoa was benched last week. I had absolutely seen enough from Tua over his career to know with certainty that he’s not it. He can be a complementary player and if the team is built such that everything can function whether the QB plays at his best or not, and the offense doesn’t rely on the QB carrying the team, he can win in such a situation. It’s actually what I want to build here. I want a team that the roster is constructed properly and won’t rely too much on any one player. Every roster needs great players, but a great team needs a lot more solid players too, ones that can get the job done with or without a great player too.

This weekend’s game against the Bucs means nothing for us except if we win we draft a little further back and if we lose, we may move a spot or 2. I firmly believe that this team’s wins or losses should have zero effect as to whether HC Mike McDaniel stays or goes. I don’t see any reason to for him to return, and therefore interim GM Champ Kelly should also go. The plan should be to hire a GM and allow that GM to build his team as he pleases. The GM will hire a HC who will then fill out the staff of assistant coaches and then together, these 2 will talk and form a plan of how they want to build the roster, with the GM always having final say on those things. The HC will obviously have input, but in order for there to be proper accountability, you have to have one guy having final say.

Sunday will be Quinn Ewers second week of practices with the ones, and also his second start, but the visiting Buccaneers are still fighting for a playoff spot, so this won’t be an easy test for Quinn. While the Bucs defense has hardly been swashbuckling opponents, you can expect them to be a little more dialed in in their quest to remain in the NFC playoff race. 6 Playoff spots have been clinched, so 2 remain, and there are 4 teams fighting for those 2 spots, the Carolina Panthers, Minnesota Vikings, Detroit Lions and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Bucs play us and the season finale is against the Carolina Panthers at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa Florida. In order for that game to mean anything though, the Bucs must first beat our Miami Dolphins.

I have no idea what the plan is for our Dolphins, but honestly, how could having Quinn Ewers playing against a playoff contending team like the Bucs with QB Baker Mayfield at the helm have any effect on whether Head Coach mike Mike McDaniel returns next season? That decision has to have been made by now, am I wrong? You all know I wanted Quinn Ewers to get some starts and I’m thankful he is getting 3, but I would have liked to have seen him get more. It’s not that I believe he can be a franchise QB, he might, but you have to know at the very least if he’s a capable backup QB. I don’t know who was responsible for that oversight in 2024, but ultimately, the GM should be responsible, and he was the first to go. I think we should draft a QB in 2025, but I don’t believe we have to trade up to get the best QB at #1, Fernando Mendoza, but I do think he would be an absolute great fit for the city of Miami.

I hope that this week Mike McDaniel doesn’t lean too hard on #28 RB De’Von Achane, there’s no need to burn him out and get him injured. He will be a valuable asset to the team whether he’s playing for us, or if he’s traded to move up in the draft. Let Jaylen Wright get a bunch of carries and let Ollie Gordon get some too, the “W” isn’t as important as evaluating other players. If we do decide to trade Achane, it would be nice to know if Wright can be a #1 or at least #1A. Randy was talking about every player on the roster as an asset and I agree at this time. This team is going to get rebuilt (hopefully!), and I couldn’t agree more with Randy that you have to think of these players not only now, but 3 years down the line too. Jordyn Brooks’ value may never be higher, but he’s young enough at 28 to still be a valuable part of this defense for at least 3 years, so there’s no need to move on from him. If we do indeed hire a new GM (Hallelujah!), he will have to go over every player, every unit, and plan ahead for not only the 2026 season but years beyond. Obviously, 2026 will be a struggle with the cap, so free agency will have to be guys to fill out the roster and no large expenditures because the money simply won’t be available.

Has QB Tua Tagovailoa actually played his last game here? We’ve seen other organizations absorb the cap hit and then go on a season later and become contenders like the Denver Broncos. We’ve also seen teams do it like the LV Raiders and then wallow in misery. Let’s be honest, we need to not only find the right Executive to be our new GM but most importantly, that GM needs to identify a Head Coach who is capable of winning in the NFL, not with gimmicks, but being able to use his personnel in a fashion that is sustainable against any and every opponent, andy weather situation, and any big game, and also a Head Coach that is capable of making adjustments when the opponent takes away some of the things that gave you success. That’s how the Broncos turned it around so quickly. The GM drafted very well, and as even Stephen Ross understood, Sean Payton is a darn good Head Coach. I have these pipe dreams that we can do all of these things, but I also understand as a lifelong Miami Dolphins Fan that we might actually do none of these things, and we could very well have interim GM Champ Kelly do the drafting for Head Coach Mike McDaniel and Tua could be our starting QB next season. As I’ve pointed out before, that would just be the laziest, most inexcusable path to take and if you think the fanbase is angry now, go ahead and pull that shit and see a whole lot more opposing team’s jersey in the stands next season! Let’s hope we do it right . . .

What’s up with all these left-handed QB’s from the state Hawaii? Tua, Dillon Gabriel and now Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele. Also, what’s up with all these QB’s with a side arm throwing motion?

Sagapolutele will be one to watch for the 2028 draft. We need a QB much sooner. He is only 19, already 6’3 225 and a true freshman.

  3. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    MikeE,

I had not read it before I posted. You keep this thing going, so whomever’s name is in the article you took the time to put it there. Thanks for getting something out on Christmas! I’m in between festivities. One yesterday. One tomorrow. I’ve watched about 2 quarters of football. Lol

I sure hope so! Looks like New England is on thier second round of controlling our division after 5 years of Buffalo dominance.

    sidearm comes from baseball infield

I played 3rd as a kid and threw sidearm, throwing a football I did it the same way, throwing over the top was forced

    ———-

I never thought about that(!)… but I’m 100% sure you’re correct. Same here as an infielder through high school (2nd baseman), where I always threw either 3/4 or sidearm… especially when having to turn a double-play.

When the runner from 1st base is sliding at ya at 2nd base (as a 2nd basemen), one pretty much HAS to throw it either 3/4 or sidearm to throw the batter out at first. It’s a matter of ergonomics, where one hasn’t the time to ‘reset’ and bring the ball up to a full overhand throw.

    VERY insightful post, Steve. Props!

  8. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

    Mike E,

I want to get back to you on all of these so-called ‘reports’, regarding us trading for or signing Lamar Jackson in the event he’s cut (he won’t be cut!). Like you, I’m like… WHY?!! HOW?!! We don’t have the cap space to even entertain bringing Lamar to the Phins!!!

Yes, Lamar has a mansion in Miami… and I’m sure he’d like to play in Florida… pretty sure that’s where the connection has been made.

Lamar is injury-prone (not to the extent of Tua, but his availability is certainly a liability), he’s going to lose his explosive running style any day now (due to age and injury), and just like Tua here in Miami, the entire Ravens’ Offense is designed around Lamar.

Yessir, you and I are on the EXACT same page… say NO to even the THOUGHT of bringing Lamar to our Phins.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

There is no player we should be trading multiple draft picks for, no one. Just build the damn roster the right way. This team is miles away from being just one player short of a perennial playoff team. Of course I understand the importance of the QB, but having a superstar veteran QB costs not only draft picks but a boatload of $$$ and we shouldn’t waste either. Draft a QB in ’26, and then draft another in ’27. In ’26, no rush, don’t draft a 1st RD QB unless you believe that guy is your franchise QB. In ’27 we will probably have a better choice of QB’s simply because there will be more Qb’s declaring in ’27.

  9. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Markey – Yeah, New England definitely did things right and it sure appears as if they should be contenders because they built a solid roster, they have a franchise QB in place, and they also have cap room to continue to add. We have none of the above. Buffalo will always be relevant with Josh Allen because he’s one of maybe a handful of QB’s in the NFL that can totally take over a game and win one for you.

    • markeyh's avatar markeyh says:

So where does that leave Miami? Always fighting for 2nd, 3rd, or 4th place in our division? I see no hope in the near future!

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Near future, no, but you have to get yourself in the right direction. That will make me feel a whole better. Wouldn’t you feel better if we clean house, hire what seems to be a good GM hire and he hires a strong coach?

      • markeyh's avatar markeyh says:

Yes, but the question is, will that happen?
If it does, I would be encouraged, but if we come back with McDaniel and Kelly in 2026, I might, for the first time since being a Dolphin fan, take that year off

  10. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Looking at possible day 3 ILB’s, I still like Aiden Fisher the most on day 3 but Cal ILB Cade Uluava, 6’1, 235 looks decent. He has not let known if he is going to declare but he has stated the last 3 seasons at Cal. #27 and #0:

  11. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Markey – Can’t blame you for that. I may just do the same. I would have no desire to waste my time watching this same old tired show again. If the owner and management are going to be lethargic and lazy and uninspired, how can they expect the fanbase to be any different?

    • markeyh's avatar markeyh says:

It’s time to clean house and start from scratch with new management; anything less will be a major disappointment and unacceptable!

watching NM vs Minn, 4th down Minn goes for it, snap is fumbled 5 yards back RB tries to pick it up and run with it (as he’s supposed to do on 4th down), but it gets knocked away, with 3 NM defenders there and no one else

instead of picking it up the guy dives on it before his teammates, then he jumps around like the tard he is, instead of running it back for a TD

    should’ve been escorted into EZ

the same guy would’ve intercepted a ball 50 yards downfield instead of knocking it down

seems today’s players are more interested in a bad state, than winning

so who is our third string center

  19. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

wow that sucks for Isaiah Johnson! Looney done for the year and part of next year probably. which, for a guy on the practice squad level might be permanently

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Yeah, it sucks. He was actually on the 53 and active for 4 games, not just practice squad. He has played 55% snaps on ST’s in those games.

I don’t think he was ever going to get “there” with him lacking in speed. I think he ran over a 4.6 at the combine. Having this knee injury does not look good for him.

  20. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Steve, you watched the NM/Minnesota game. What did you think of DE/Edge Anthony Smith, 6’6, 285 of Minnesota? I saw he had 6 solo tackles, 2 sacks and 2 PD’s in the game.

  21. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I was hoping ECU QB Katin Houser, 6’3, 225 was going to enter the draft. Instead, he opted out of todays bowl game and is entering the transfer portal. He will be another one to keep an eye on for the 2027 draft. Good arm and can do it with his legs also.

  22. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

A day 3 WR I was keeping an eye on is improving his draft stock today. Another Anthony Smith. He’s an ECU WR 6’3, 189, 4.45 forty, has 4 rec for 156 yards and 2 TD’s today.

This is his 2024 highlights, 2025 not out yet. After this bowl game in 2025 he has over 1000 yards rec and 7 TD’s. Also 1 rush for 45 yards and a TD.

  23. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Klubnik not helping his draft stock much today. Though, his #1 WR and I believe both starting OT’s are not playing today and are entering the draft. I like the RT from Clemson as a possible draft pick for us.

  24. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I’m using the MANAGE ROSTER tool on Spotrac for the ’26 season of our Dolphins. If we outright cut ‘Reek and Chubb, and then trade Minkah for a draft pick(s) (doesn’t matter how high or low the draft picks are), we’ve got nearly $34M to work with (yes, that means we’d be $34M under the cap).

Now if we cut Tua on top of that, we’re OVER the cap… not to mention the $99M dead cap incurred if we cut him now). I don’t understand why there are so many out there (including major media outlets) thinking we should even TOUCH Tua this season, being he has a built in OUT after the ’26 season.

It seems illogical to cut Tua this season. Just do what the Falcons did with Kirk Cousins this season, right?

Perhaps Spotrac has it wrong? Am I missing something?

  25. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

And I’ll tell y’all this: IF Capri McD is in fact retained, there’s no way we’re ‘tearing it all down’. Why? Because his system is already in place, on Offense, that is. We’re not all of the sudden going to be building for SMASHMOUTH football if McD is being retained.

We could potentially clear $50M in cap space to augment what’s already in place… if that’s what we’re going do by retaining McD.

  26. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

    bailbondmike

     says:

    December 27, 2025 at 3:04 pm

You can designate him a post 6/1 cut. That will only cause an increase in his 2026 cap by 11m. By your #’s, we would still be 23m under the cap.

    ———-

I’ve heard that, and it also gives us more (albeit modest) cap relief for the ’27 season.

I say, if we’re going to rebuild, then allow the rebuild to begin! And that begins by dismissing Capri McD after the season is over. Then, by KEEPING Tua’s contract as is (see the Falcons and Kirk Cousins), we have that much more $$$ to begin the rebuild in ’26.

JMO, as always. I suppose it all comes down to either retaining McD or dismissing McD… more specifically, retaining the McD Offense or dismissing the McD Offense. THAT is what it’s all going to come down to. If we dismiss McD (I’m in favor!!! *raises hand!* ), it would be wise to have more cap space in ’26 to begin the rebuild.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

And THUS, it makes more sense to me from a financial standpoint to keep Tua just as he is, REGARDLESS of what happens to McD. Tua can ride the pines all season long, knowing that if we cut him, we’re only shooting ourselves in the foot… rebuilding or not.

Does that make sense from a financial standpoint, or am I out of my mind?

  27. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

    BBM,

I’ve been passively watching the PSU-Clemson game. It’s just not the same to me without our powerhouse RBs! Good to see DDS with 2 sacks today.

Good to PSU dig ourselves out of the hole left by Franklin to end up with a winning record… barring a miracle by Clemson!

  28. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

This was brought up by someone saying we need to show Tua the door. Then they need to bring in a young vet and draft another QB on day 3 to compete with Ewers. They mentioned signing f/a QB Malik Willis, have him compete with Ewers and a rookie, then draft another QB in 2027.

Willis did not look bad against the Bears when he came in for Jordan Love last weekend.

Forget about his time at TN. In his 2 seasons backing up at Green Bay, He’s completed 80% for 684 yards, 5 TD’s, 0 INT’s and run 33 times for 201 yards, 1 TD’s but importantly ran for 11 first downs.

He won both his starts for GB in 2024, though they were against the Colts and Titans.

Steve, I don’t think Mestemaker sucks. He does have a way to go though. It’s his story that gets me.

He never starts a high school varsity football game, walks on to North Texas and becomes their #5 QB. He works his way up to #2 QB and starts their 2024 bowl game. It was his first start at QB since junior varsity in high school.

This year in his first season starting he throws for 4,379 yards, 34 TD’s, 9 INT’s, ran for 89 yards and 5 TD’s.

Today, the 2-13 NY Giants play the 2-13 LV Raiders. The NFL has to do something to keep the NFL competitive balance. I think there should be a draft lottery, but if they decide not to go that route, in the rare occasion when you have two of the worst NFL teams playing each other with the #1 pick looming for the loser, I think there should be a rule in place that the winner of the game has a leg up for the #1 pick. We’ll need a team that understands long term success and doesn’t suffer from impulse control issues when it comes to the roster. We’ve been on a 4-5 year cycle for the better part of the last 3 decades.

  69. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

M – I don’t care if Tua’s on the roster, I just couldn’t stomach him being part of the plan or offense next year. He’s done

  70. sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

    Mike,

Just do what I did decades ago and invest in a video game system and play Madden. Dolphins will win all kinds of Super Bowls. lol

It’s entertainment you control vs entertainment that you can’t

    leading into the half

at least they are not guaranteed to lose at this point.

I want to see the first 3rd qtr TD in like forever

  72. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

McDaniel can’t be a Head Coach. You have to be able to coach the whole game. Can’t skip the 3rd quarter

He’s innovative- I’d love to see what he can do with a QB like Malik Willis. The rub there is I don’t think he’s a head coach for various reasons. He consistently gets outcoached after the half.

  73. Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

Yes Mike, Tua is done on this team for sure.

  74. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

The pass protection has been so bad.

  75. Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

This is a classic 2025 Dolphins 3rd quarter

  82. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

    RASUL DOUGLAS: KEEPER!

  83. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

A great chance to put the game away on this drive. It’d be nice if on pass plays Ewers could actually get just a sliver of time. He’s played a nice game considering he has been pressured on probably 75% of his drop backs.

  84. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

So tired of all the false starts while playing at home

  85. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Great call on that 3rd down.

  86. pbfinfan's avatar pbfinfan says:

OMG Hill made a critical play.

  87. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Jonathan Vilma is right: why are the Phins fans booing the decision to punt on 4th and 1, backed up on the field?

Phins fans are so very fickle.

  88. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

    boom!

  91. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Just get Achane out of the game! We don’t need him to get killed!

  92. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Such a wasted opportunity to end this. Ewers missed on that 3rd down.

  93. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

    Woot woot – 3rd TO!!

  94. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Bradleys Chubb’s dance is pretty funny

  95. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

I can’t see the game, but why are we throwing on 3rd and 11? CALL a fucking draw and let the clock run. So fucking stupid and then blame Ewers for a bad throw…lol

  96. pbfinfan's avatar pbfinfan says:

Holy cow, Cubb trying to get that 5 mil bonus! Good for him.

  97. pbfinfan's avatar pbfinfan says:

That’s how you do it Tua!!!

  98. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Wait, was that a Dolphins QB running and actually picking up a 1st down on 3rd down?

  99. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:
