Stop the nonsense! Sign Savaiinaea

I know just about all of the Finsmobunleashed group up to a point. I have met just about all of you, and/or have conversed on this blog for over a decade. I know one thing remains constant across the board, and that’s that we all want this team to win and have a great season. There is an exception, and that would probably be me. No one here perhaps with the exception of Rock is more critical of GM Chris Grier, and yes, sometimes, admittedly I hope that if this team fails this season, Miami Dolphins Owner Stephen Ross would finally fire GM Chris Grier and hold him accountable. For those of you that just want the Dolphins to play well and win, let’s took a look at the evidence of why we need to sign OG Jonah Savaiinaea and have him prepared and as ready as possible to begin this season, shall we?

“For us, just candid, this was a player we had targeted, we spent a lot of time with, we had him in on a 30 visit, spent a lot of time at all-star games,” Dolphins general manager Chris Grier said of Savaiinaea in April. “Butch (Barry) went out and spent a day with him and had a private workout with him. This is a player that we were very convicted on for what he can add with his size, his power, he’s got versatility.

“He’s played tackle, guard. So he’s an athletic kid, and as we spent time getting to know him he was the right kind of guy for us. He loves ball, he’s very competitive, so for us it was important as we were going through the board that he was the highest rated guy we had. And so the opportunity arose and we took it.”

That was Chris Grier, in his own words. He didn’t select this player and trade up for him so he can play contract games with him and have him miss learning his job and being an integral part of this offensive line, immediamente! Grier took Big Jonah Savaiinaea to start at one of the offensive guard spots and it looks like that’s going to be RG, with free agent OG James Daniels slotted to play LG. I know we all worry about different things at different times but all of a sudden some of you have become the responsible police on cap management and contracts. Stop the nonsense! Grier has been absurdly irresponsible regarding the cap, handing out extensions to the wrong players, letting our own players go in free agency and overpaying for others teams free agents in trades and free agency. The totality of the contract for Jonah Savaiinaea is $11.32M. Just get it done, even if you have to make the whole damn thing guaranteed. Believe me, this contract will not be the one that haunts this team, there are so many others with far worse ramifications and bad results that I can point to.

I’m sorry, I love you all here, but if you really want this team to succeed, you know that our rookie RG needs to have every minute in training camp so he can be the most prepared he can possibly be, so now is not the time to put the cork in the bottle. If we were going to do that, we wouldn’t have allowed Grier to extend Jalen Ramsey who is now on the Pittsburgh Steelers, or Tyreek Hill who will probably play his least season in 2025 with the Dolphins as his cap hit becomes unacceptable in 2026. I’ll add in the contract for QB Tua Tagovailoa who if they played him on his 5th year option, would have been far less after once again missing 6 games and failing to get the Dolphins a playoff victory and continues the streak of no playoff wins to 25 years. We wouldn’t have traded multiple picks to acquire Bradley Chubb and pay him the money that could have been used to pay our own DT Christian Wilkins or OG Robert Hunt. Since we got Bradley Chubb in 2022, he has given us 13.5 sacks. He’s currently on a 3YR/$54M contract that runs through 2027 when Chubb will be age 31. So, worrying about guaranteeing the $11.32M for Jonah Savaiinaea is not the biggest problem. I know you’re worried about precedent, that we’ll have to pay every 2nd RD pick from now on a guaranteed contract. You know what, draft better, and it won’t really matter much now or in the future!
