My Fan Story–Herdfan

I started not to write this since I thought most everyone knew my Dolphins story because a lot of you were around as it happened. I like to say I was acquired in 2008 as part of the Chad Pennington deal. But what you might not know is how unlikely it is that I’m a fan of football in the first place.

no-footballMy high school was so small we didn’t have a football team. Then it was on to Marshall and there wasn’t much of a team there either. It was 10 years out from the crash and even though the team was still struggling everyone went to games to support the team. Football is special at Marshall and always will be. In the 4 years I was there they won a total of 8 games and honestly there wasn’t a lot to cheer about.  We cheered for a nearly completed pass or an almost interception. At the end of each season it was the same thought;  Maybe next year.

Being a fan of a good team is easy. Being a fan of a horrible team is hard. During that time at Marshall, as improbable as it was that a horrible team could make me a fan of a game, that’s exactly what happened. I didn’t just become a fan. I became a die-hard football fan.

One fun fact.  I remember pulling for Miami to win the 1983 Superbowl against the Redskins.  It was my senior year at Marshall and the guys upstairs from me had a Superbowl party.  Everyone was for the Redskins and not to be one to follow the crowd, I was for the Dolphins.  I really didn’t get into NFL games then.  I was still just a fan of the Herd.

1990s

After I graduated from Marshall I continued to follow the team. Little by little they improved and that horrible team started winning and became the winningest team in the 1990s in any division of college football. The players that helped them become winners moved on to the NFL;

the players

Troy Brown, Chad Pennington, Randy Moss and later Bryon Leftwich to name a few. I watched NFL games to see how they were all doing but I was still a college football fan.

Then Pennington was kicked to the curb by the Jets in favor of that dick pic texting ass Favre and I was pissed off. To put it in relatable terms, Pennington is to Marshall fans what Marino is to the Dolphins. Legend. How dare they? So I began watching Miami games and reading some articles online in the Miami news. I don’t know what it was but there was something about that team in 2008. Maybe part of it was the excitement of the Wildcat game in New England or ending the regular season with a victory over those idiots who had dropped Pennington.

I think part of it was watching a team turn things around, very similar to what I had watched the Herd do and with the same quarterback. It was so improbable they should be winning, yet they did. I was hooked. That season was so much fun to watch and I have to admit the blog was part of that. Even living where I do in an area without a professional team, I was still part of a group of fans.  Even if some of those fans called Pennington chad-henne-3noodle arm, I ignored it.  Even if some of those fans were clamoring to start the rookie with the rocket arm.  “Let’s see what we’ve got with Henne!!  He can throw the ball through a wall!”  I ignored that too.  I won’t mention names.  But you know who you are.  🙂

Another VIVID memory I have is either during the 2008 season or maybe 2009.  I clicked on NFL network and they were showing an old Dolphins/Jets game and it was the start of the second half.  A Monday night game.  We were KILLING them.  So I watched.   And when it was over I wanted to know one thing:  Why did no one warn me about that?  Thanks, guys.

So there you have it.   I envy all of you who remember winning seasons, playoffs and superbowls.  Maybe next year.

Since this is running on Dr. Seuss’ birthday, I thought I’d finish with this.

Well done Herd! Really enjoyed this, and the video was awesome too. I forgot how much chaos the wildcat created.

    Herd,
This is as interesting and as unorthodox of a way to become a fan as any- I love it! Thanks for sharing it. I was there (the blog) in the 2008 season. That has been the best year in the last 20+ seasons. You are right, as we are learning- it’s hard to be a fan of a perpetually bad team.

  4. Tim Knight's avatar Silly Tim says:

Cool story, Herd. I did not know you were that new of a Dolphin fan.

    Great story Herd

    The video was often too

    We need another playoff year!

Good story Herd! Sad to see Penningtons career come to an end after falling into Jake Longs ass. Good thing he didn’t play behind the OL of the 2013&2014 dolphins. We would’ve literally seen his arm ripped off.

  7. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I think Ellerbe is the next guy cut, although it may be a multiple cut, in which case I’d say Ellerbe and Finnegan

    • dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

I think today we get a curve ball. If Miami is going to resign Odrick, I could see a suprising release of Erle Mitchell. Starks would be released later and their funds would go to Odrick & a big bodied DT.

  8. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

    Great job Herd!
You could be the best part of the Pennington pick-up!
    🙂

  9. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    D-Bolt

I don’t think we’re going to try and outbid anyone for Odrick. He’s not special, he’s OK.

  10. Tim Knight's avatar Silly Tim says:

Dbolt, aren’t we considered the Fab Fucks?

  11. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

That would really surprise me if we signed Odrick. That defense disappeared down the stretch twice in consecutive years, you have to change something.

    • dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

I’m not moved one way or another with re-signing Odrick, but he has more right to claim being more worn by the end of the season. He played nearly 900 defensive snaps while Starks and Mitchell were in the low 500 count.

      • dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

With that said we had too many penetrators versus run stuffers on the DL. This needs to be corrected. Do all of our young guys who were on IR comeback to rectify this?

  13. Ken's avatar Ken says:

Awesome job Herd. “Dick pick texting ass” has to be one of my favorite lines I have seen on here. LOL.

  14. Ken's avatar Ken says:

If Odrick is re-signed then Starks goes. I would rather have it the other way around but it may make more sense from a cap point of view because Starks does not carry a big cap hit and he clears a decent amount of cap space.

  15. D's avatar D says:

There was a report that Dolphins were interested in the guy i want us to get in FA, that being Knighton. If so i would almost assuredly say Starks will be cut. Pairing Knighton/Mitchell and Odrick/Johnson will be a nice set of DT’s and that should help keep them from getting worn out by end of the year.

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

Knighton would be a good fit. He is more the run stuffer that we lack. I would much rather pay him than Odrick. Not sure we can afford to pay both he and Odrick as we almost undoubtedly have to add a WR in FA as well as the draft.

  16. Tim Knight's avatar Silly Tim says:

Dbolt, Johnson is more of a penetrating DT where Francis might be that guy who can be an anchor being that he’s 6-5 330. He also moves well for a big man.

  17. Ken's avatar Ken says:

My 2 favorite FAs would be Iupati and Cobb. If we are going to spend big those are the 2 would target which means most likely we sign Harris. LOL.

    • D's avatar D says:

Ken, cutting Starks i think save more than you think, he is 5 mil off the books if we cut him. For what we save cutting starks we probably could resign Odrick, but i have a feeling Odrick gets allowed to test FA and he winds up signing elsewhere.

      • Ken's avatar Ken says:

I know Starks is a big cap savings. It’s too bad I think he is better than Odrick. I would shed no tears if Odrick tests FA and signs elsewhere. I don’t think he has given us that level of production that warrants a big contract. I can see good options in both FA and the draft should we let Odrick walk. I also would like to see Fede get more playing time. He flashed some talent when he got his chance last year.

    • D's avatar D says:

GB isnt going to let Cobb leave unless the number is HUGE, and if it is we really cant afford that. Iupati is not going to be overly expensive, probably 6-7mil a year range, but if you look into Boling, i bet you start to feel he is both more cost effective and suited for our offense. I definitely will not have any issues with us taking Iupati, but with our limited cap space, im thinking we look a little cheaper.

      • Ken's avatar Ken says:

Most reports are that GB won’t re-sign Cobb.

      • D's avatar D says:

Wierd i have read differently, that they are planning to secure him before start of FA. Guess we will see, but either way he is going to get PAID, and we cant afford that.

  18. D's avatar D says:

Fede is probably Odrick minus the years in the league. They have a similar game and are tweeners 3-4 DE vs 4-3 DT. I think he would be adequate as a replacement for Odrick.

Herd, I’m so glad you were part of the Pennington deal, we’ve all loved blogging with you over the years. We’re glad you chose to stay a Fin fan even though Chad didn’t last all that long here, which is too bad.
Too bad we couldn’t have had Pennington for a few more years and went right into Tannehill with him.
There were lots of clips of Teddy Ginn in your video, he’s available now if we need a pure speed guy!?!

Which is why I am more than okay if we let Odrick walk.
    ————————————–
Tandem of Fede and Anthony Johnson who is more pure 4-3 DT, should be an upgrade on the run support from that side, with at least as good from a pass rush perspective

  22. D's avatar D says:

    GDP,
Jets are suppose to be after Boling too, which sucks ofr us because they have so much cpa space already its sick. They would easily be able to outbid us for him, and best case scenario they would push his cost WAY up for us.

  23. son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

This is what Draftsite.com has for us right now:

    1 14 DeVante Parker WR Louisville 6′ 3″ 205
    2 47 Hroniss Grasu OC Oregon 6′ 3″ 300
    3 78 T.J. Yeldon* RB Alabama 6′ 1″ 220
    4 111 Tyler Lockett WR Kansas State 5′ 10″ 180
    5 142 Joey Mbu DT Houston 6′ 3″ 315
    6 175 Stefon Diggs* WR Maryland 6′ 1″ 185
    7 207 Mark Glowinski OG West Virginia 6′ 5″ 310

Not too bad but I’ve never even heard of Grasu and especially wouldn’t want a C in the second round. Get Perryman instead.

That game was definitely one that felt like 100 tings went just as they should for the Jets to win, including the things that didn’t go their way like the interception that happened twice lol. We had a few games last year that felt a little like that but none to the magnitude of that one.

  31. D's avatar D says:

Tim do you guys only do logo branding or do you work with client on their brand image as well?

    • Tim Knight's avatar Silly Tim says:

Both. I worked for a different agency that I wrote about earlier during the Monday Night miracle game. We do some overall branding at the company I work for now, but we’re industry specific – Senior Healthcare.

Most of the time it’s to update their brand into 2015, and to help change bad reputation as they try to upgrade their facilities.

The 2015 salary cap has been set at $143.28 million.
In the midst of unprecendented popularity, the NFL continues to rake in massive revenue. That can be seen in the cap, which has risen from $123M in 2013 to $133M last year and now all the way up at $143M. According to OverTheCap.com, the Jaguars, Raiders, Browns, Jets and Colts have the most space right now. The Saints, Patriots, Ravens, 49ers and Chiefs have the least.

It didn’t seem logical that Hartline was willing to renegotiate his contract and was just cut anyway. I just chalked it up to they were just going in a different direction, but at the right price, I think Hartline could come back. Unless of course he gets a sweet offer from another team. Not far fetched to think the Jets might be interested.

    • Jahndoh30's avatar jahndoh says:

What those of us who’d like to see his resigning have working against us is: The free agent market is pretty thin. Bryant is tagged, Demaryius is tagged, Cobb and Maclin are going to be expensive, Crabtree is Crabtree, and Torrey Smith has something happening with his knee that would give me cause for concern if I were a GM.

That leaves a group that looks like this:
      Kenny Britt
      Eddie Royal
      Rod Streater
      Cecil Shorts
      Hakim Nicks
      Andre Holmes
      Jacoby Jones
      Ted Ginn
      Reggie Wayne
      Harry Douglas
      Brian Hartline

I can see Hartline looking pretty attractive to teams with established QBs based on that group. Hopefully if it’s comparable money though he’ll be inclined to come back and sign with us.

I know folks who want Suh and Iupati in fins jerseys are going to start salivating, but I sincerely believe we’re not going to sign any marquee free agents this offseason. They’re making space for Tannehill’s contract.

LMAO, him & Omar who said in an article that UCLA QB Hundley would be better in this offense than Tannehill in 3yrs…. SMH @ that!

      • Tim Knight's avatar Silly Tim says:

Oh brother. How’s Matt Barkley doing? LOL

      • Jahndoh30's avatar jahndoh says:

I also think it’s ridiculous, but I’d draft Hundley 100 times before I drafted Barkley. Hundley WOULD do well in this system IMHO, and if we didn’t have Tannehill I think he’d be a great guy to target round 2 or in a trade back scenario. I have a feeling some Pac12 QB whom I like a lot is going to end up in this division, and we’re going to see first hand that the Pac 12 had some good QBs last season.

    • Jahndoh30's avatar jahndoh says:

He’s pissing into the wind on Tannehill. When it gets all over his pants he’s got only himself to blame. 🙂

  67. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

The Dolphins have released Cortland Finnegan, which clears another $5.475M in cap space.

  68. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I thought Ellerbe was going to beat him, but I thought Finnegan would be right behind him. He gave us some good play when he was healthy.

    • Jahndoh30's avatar jahndoh says:

Agreed. But he needed a Grimes 2013 like season to capitalize on that deal, and he had trouble staying healthy. Ellerbe is a foregone conclusion IMHO. Right now the defense has 79M of Spending vs 58M on offense (before today’s cuts). Finnegans savings, Ellerbe’s cut with Tannehill new contract balances that ratio out.

So who gets cut next? Ellerbe, Fields, Wheeler, Starks?

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Ellerbe for sure. Wheeler will be a starting LB (contract says that makes sense). Fields may get a redo, but he’ll be here. Starks is the Q.

I was just listening to Mike Francesa and he was saying the Lions made it clear 3 days ago they would franchise Suh if they couldn’t re-sign him, now they’re not doing that.

FFR could say he just had sex with Kate Upton, it might be true and it might not be true.

  73. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

The Giants tagged JPP, they are strapped and might have to cut LB Jon Beason, who would be good for Miami if he could stay healthy a full season.

  74. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Stanger, if Putin was behind the killing, it would have been staged as an tragic accident, or suicide. He’s a former KGB guy, he knows the tricks of the trade.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Patriots assigned the franchise tag to K Stephen Gostkowski.
The move means FS Devin McCourty will be headed to the open market. The tag for kickers is a relatively steep $4.126 million, but ensures the Pats will keep the man who has converted field goals at an 86.8 percent rate since 2006. Gostkowski was 35-of-37 on field-goal attempts in 2014, and is one of the league’s very best, if not best, kickers.
    __________________________
McCourty would be a very good add here. Keep clearing space Hickey. 😉

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Holy yit……….that means other teams have the chance to match, but don’t think they will at that number. Maybe that was like paying for insurance given injury concerns.

Broncos aren’t out of the equation even at that figure.

      • Jahndoh30's avatar jahndoh says:

It means we have right to match. Other teams have right to bid, which is just like if we let him go to FA status, only now we get a final say.

    • Jahndoh30's avatar jahndoh says:

underutilized tool. If another team with a lot of cap space comes and bids huge on him we’ll have to let him walk, but that’s how it would’ve worked in FA too. This way we get to let him explore his value in the market, and we get right of first refusal. Hopefully he’ll be back and both parties will feel good about the deal.

@caplannfl: There are at least 3-4 teams very interested in TE Charles Clay. Will be interesting to see if a team steps up and offers a deal.

  87. Tim Knight's avatar Silly Tim says:

We can match any offer another team makes on Clay.

    • Jahndoh30's avatar jahndoh says:

This. The fins now have some control over his fate as opposed to letting him become a completely FA. It’s a smart move.

  88. Tim Knight's avatar Silly Tim says:

The transition tag is a good way to test the market for your own UFA and decide if you agree with his market.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

The only problem is those nasty poison pill contracts, which I believe are still legal.

      • Jahndoh30's avatar jahndoh says:

I think the new CBA put an end to those contracts. Hasn’t been one of those in years.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Silly Tim says:

No, the NFL wasn’t happy about what NE pulled in 2007. That’s why they forced NE to offer up at least an additional 7th.

  89. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

The transition tag amount is the average salary of the top ten players at a given position. So that would pay Clay as something like the top fifth or sixth TE in the NFL.

  90. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Stanger, it was a professional hit I’m sure. But Putin had nothing to gain and a lot to lose by this with public and world sentiment against him. It’s a known fact that the CIA, the current US admin is trying to destabilize Putin & Russia as they keep butting heads over Ukraine as well as trying to make Putin a less than comfy bedfellow of the Chinese.
    Just some thoughts to ponder.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

gdp — my guess is we’ll never know, but Putin did have something to gain. Putting the fear of death into those who oppose him. If I was a Russian opposition leader, I’d be doing my opposing from Switzerland or London even before this.

      • Jahndoh30's avatar jahndoh says:

Lets see, who had the most motive, and who’s gotten by with it before? Things are sometimes more complicated than they seem, but sometimes they are exactly what they seem. The idea the CIA would kill Putin’s rival to make him look bad in the public eye seems far fetched. I could think of 100 other ways to accomplish that goal. Since when does he cave to public pressure anyway?

  91. Jahndoh30's avatar jahndoh says:

Poison Pill is now illegal. Here’s per Wiki on the transition tag:

In 2011, the NFL and NFLPA ratified a new collective bargaining agreement. In this agreement, poison pill clauses were eliminated from offer sheets issued to players under the transition tag. The specific language in the CBA states:

“No Offer Sheet may contain a Principal Term that would create rights or obligations for the Old Club that differ in any way (including but not limited to the amount of compensation that would be paid, the circumstances in which compensation would be guaranteed, or the circumstances in which other contractual rights would or would not vest) from the rights or obligations that such Principal Term would create for the Club extending the Offer Sheet (i.e., no ‘poison pills’).”

  92. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

We can still negotiate a new contract with Clay, so it does give us time and control, unless someone blows him out of the water with a great offer. I’m not sure we want to break the bank for Clay.

  93. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Glad to see that move on Clay. It buys the Phins more time on him, see if he can stay healthy, and if we lose him to more money than we want to match over the $7M, then we won’t get compensation and look to other options.
Mike E, no poison pill anymore with new CBA as far as I’ve understood a couple years back.

yeah but they get there cause they FT goodell every year

  95. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

The transition tag on Clay says, hey, we don’t think you’re worth over $7M per, but we want to keep you this year, and see if you will prove us wrong. Keeps him hungry 🙂

    • Jahndoh30's avatar jahndoh says:

I don’t agree with that at all. It says: We think you’re worth the top 10 money, and we’re willing to pay it too you. We also think you’re entitled to explore your worth on the open market so you know the deal we’re willing to offer is a fair deal.

      • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

LOL, ok then. If that was the case they’d already inked a longterm contract. Why let a player you really want to keep test the open market and risk losing him?
It’s a calculated gamble, but one that is leveraged on our side I’ll agree.

      • Jahndoh30's avatar jahndoh says:

“If that was the case they’d already inked a longterm contract.”

How does that allow him to explore the market value for his services? Players with market value don’t usually sign undervalued contracts right before they hit FA.

      • Jahndoh30's avatar jahndoh says:

PS, not sure what was funny about that. I didn’t invent the concept I just delineate, nor did I even think of it. Bill Polian shared it with me. Laugh at him.

    • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

The risk is we get no compensation if a team with lots of cap blows Miami out of the water on Clay. So essentially right now his status isn’t far from what it was being a UFA.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Silly Tim says:

Except we have the chance to match. If we let him hit FA he could have signed with a team who blew him away without even giving us a chance.
