My Fan Story–Herdfan

I started not to write this since I thought most everyone knew my Dolphins story because a lot of you were around as it happened. I like to say I was acquired in 2008 as part of the Chad Pennington deal. But what you might not know is how unlikely it is that I’m a fan of football in the first place.

no-footballMy high school was so small we didn’t have a football team. Then it was on to Marshall and there wasn’t much of a team there either. It was 10 years out from the crash and even though the team was still struggling everyone went to games to support the team. Football is special at Marshall and always will be. In the 4 years I was there they won a total of 8 games and honestly there wasn’t a lot to cheer about.  We cheered for a nearly completed pass or an almost interception. At the end of each season it was the same thought;  Maybe next year.

Being a fan of a good team is easy. Being a fan of a horrible team is hard. During that time at Marshall, as improbable as it was that a horrible team could make me a fan of a game, that’s exactly what happened. I didn’t just become a fan. I became a die-hard football fan.

One fun fact.  I remember pulling for Miami to win the 1983 Superbowl against the Redskins.  It was my senior year at Marshall and the guys upstairs from me had a Superbowl party.  Everyone was for the Redskins and not to be one to follow the crowd, I was for the Dolphins.  I really didn’t get into NFL games then.  I was still just a fan of the Herd.

1990s

After I graduated from Marshall I continued to follow the team. Little by little they improved and that horrible team started winning and became the winningest team in the 1990s in any division of college football. The players that helped them become winners moved on to the NFL;

the players

Troy Brown, Chad Pennington, Randy Moss and later Bryon Leftwich to name a few. I watched NFL games to see how they were all doing but I was still a college football fan.

Then Pennington was kicked to the curb by the Jets in favor of that dick pic texting ass Favre and I was pissed off. To put it in relatable terms, Pennington is to Marshall fans what Marino is to the Dolphins. Legend. How dare they? So I began watching Miami games and reading some articles online in the Miami news. I don’t know what it was but there was something about that team in 2008. Maybe part of it was the excitement of the Wildcat game in New England or ending the regular season with a victory over those idiots who had dropped Pennington.

I think part of it was watching a team turn things around, very similar to what I had watched the Herd do and with the same quarterback. It was so improbable they should be winning, yet they did. I was hooked. That season was so much fun to watch and I have to admit the blog was part of that. Even living where I do in an area without a professional team, I was still part of a group of fans.  Even if some of those fans called Pennington chad-henne-3noodle arm, I ignored it.  Even if some of those fans were clamoring to start the rookie with the rocket arm.  “Let’s see what we’ve got with Henne!!  He can throw the ball through a wall!”  I ignored that too.  I won’t mention names.  But you know who you are.  🙂

Another VIVID memory I have is either during the 2008 season or maybe 2009.  I clicked on NFL network and they were showing an old Dolphins/Jets game and it was the start of the second half.  A Monday night game.  We were KILLING them.  So I watched.   And when it was over I wanted to know one thing:  Why did no one warn me about that?  Thanks, guys.

So there you have it.   I envy all of you who remember winning seasons, playoffs and superbowls.  Maybe next year.

Since this is running on Dr. Seuss’ birthday, I thought I’d finish with this.

Tim, yes we can match another team, but what if some team offers him close to $8.5-$9M? Can we afford to keep pace? Things to consider with this new Cap system.

  2. Mike E. says:

My guess is the Dolphins brass analyzed the market for Clay, and thought this was the right way to go. It probably is, but there is always a chance a team with loads of cap room could make it impossible to keep him, but that was obviously a risk they were willing to take.

    • stangerx says:

They may end up signing him long term, but I see this as a sign that they were worried about his injury history enough not to do so off the bat.

      • getterdone says:

As I mentioned above…kinda saying we know you’re worth it, but we want to see it maybe one more year. But then his price could go up even more if he has a big year.
So I’m thinking it buys a lil time till they can get him to sign a reasonable contract this year. They have a lot of time to still do that.

    • getterdone says:

Yup, sometimes ya got to gamble. It also means that they won’t be tagging Odrick, gonna let him test his value in the market untethered.

    • Silly Tim says:

It’s a better option than just letting him hit FA where he could leave and never come back.

      • Mike E. says:

        Yeah Tim, I agree

      • stangerx says:

At that number…….I’m pretty positive he will be back. Think it is more than he is worth per year, but then you do pay a premium to get him for just one.

  3. getterdone says:

    WOW, that was quick.

Eagles signed ILB Brad Jones, formerly of the Packers, to a two-year deal.
Cut by the Pack 10 days ago, Jones had also visited the Titans. Coming off a thoroughly underwhelming 2013-14, Jones will fill-in/compete opposite Mychal Kendricks as DeMeco Ryans recovers from a torn Achilles’ tendon. Jones was primarily a special teamer last season.

  4. getterdone says:

    Greg Aiello ✔ @gregaiello
NFL team salary cap 20 years ago in 1995? $37.1 million.

    • Mike E. says:

Hey man, in a sport without guaranteed contracts, it should be even higher. The players certainly feel that way, and rightfully so. Now, if they had contracts like MLB players, it would be a different story.

  5. CaliGigi says:

Great job Herd!! I did not know Pennington was the reason you became a Fins fan…I knew you loved him but that is cool!! He was and always will be a class act and he is the reason we made the playoffs in 2008.

  6. CaliGigi says:

Oh and by the way I met Larry Csonka on Sat. night here…had seen him when I was a kid at a pro am tennis tourney but was in the stands…he is huge was so friendly cause not many Fins fans in Central Valley…he is still a stud!!!

  7. getterdone says:

Randall Cobb is not getting franchised by GB, and the Eagles are not assigning the franchise or transition tag to Jeremy Maclin.

  8. CavalierKong says:

Cool story, Herd. I had no idea you were such a recent addition to Finsfandom.

Welcome back, NJ. Good to read ya.

“Cali”Gigi…are you living in California now? I saw your moniker change some time ago but it didn’t really register that you might have moved out here…

  9. CaliGigi says:

Met him at NFL night in Tulare, CA. There are 4 former players from Tulare Union H.S. in NFL was a dinner and then speeches Csonka was the key note speaker. We had VIP tix so there was a meet and great with the players…I’m still smiling!! 🙂

  10. CaliGigi says:

If you check my Twitter @Mrs2620 posted pic of him he signed my guy’s Dad Csonka jersey a football and caps talked to us a few min

Here is a story about dolphins and their WR draft board
    Appearently we have
1 cooper (and will trade up for him)
2 strong and Parker (not sure who is 1st)

    Where is white? (Gulp)

    Story sounds completely speculative
How does anyone know who they have where on a draft board more than 60 days from draft???

  12. BoulderPhinfan says:

wow 7 million for clay. He’s not gronk.

    • jahndoh says:

Good thing, since Gronk averages 9m and his contract was signed 3 years ago!!!! He’d probably cost 12m or more today if I had to guess.

  13. CaliGigi says:

GDP and Stanger….link works now setting was messed up

  14. The Flying Pig says:

Gronkowski is 9M a year boulder

    • Silly Tim says:

      Graham is $10M per.

Friggin Kevin Boss a few years ago got $8M per.

    • jahndoh says:

owe you a beer. His contract (Gronk’s) was also signed in the 2012 offseason.

Clay’s per year salary puts him at 7th in the league, just below Antonio Gates and just above Jared Cook.

  15. Silly Tim says:

Dennis Hickey was seen in the facility parking lot writing the name of the prospect they really want in chalk and really big letters.

    • dbolt48 says:

When he wrote Kevin Whute walked over and pissed on it saying “Nit on my list!”

      • jahndoh says:

LOL..I heard Gil Brandt a couple days ago announce we were officially in the “don’t believe anything” season of the NFL.

  16. The Flying Pig says:

    http://overthecap.com/position/tight-end/

    Here are the TE salaries

    I think it’s updated
    Clay is top 10 IMO
    Not top 5

  17. jahndoh says:

    Gigi,

Interesting story from my younger days in your neck of the woods. Back in 1990 Hilmar High School (a town north of you known for it’s dairy farms) was challenging the national record for consecutive wins. I lived in Modesto and a buddy of mine who “put 4 years of (his) life into that streak” offered to bring me down for the game and to celebrate afterwards.

Well, Hilmar lost the game when the kicker missed a game winning field goal. The town had a parade scheduled the next day, but instead, every business shuttered until the following Tuesday in mourning.

It’s crazy to see how much pride a small town can derive from a HS football team. Never saw anything like it before or since…population of the whole town back then was less than 1k I believe.

    • Silly Tim says:

      Because they’re all related.

    • CaliGigi says:

That is awesome!! I never heard of Tulare until moving here…home of the world’s largest annual agricultural show..it’s all about agriculture farming and dairies amazing how much this state produces!! The event was at the Agri Ctr was sold out…I totally love it here the people are so friendly!!!:)

      • jahndoh says:

Glad to hear you’re settling in!

Also, kinda cool that you get to see another side of California. So many people think it’s movie starts, surfers and tree huggers, but we’re quite the melting pot.

Without MJ, CA is the largest agricultural producing state in the Nation- double the production of the number 2 state…Texas.. 🙂

I did have to look that up fwiw. I’m not quite that Cliff Clavin-y

  18. BoulderPhinfan says:

maybe I should have said i’d rather have gronk for 9m than clay for 7m. I like clay but I’m worried about paying our own FAs. We don’t have a good record doing that.

    • The Flying Pig says:

If Gronk were a fa I would prefer him too

I think you either draft one high or pay him
All the TEs on this list with lower salaries are young guys

In this league either you are a cheap young guy
And elite guy with a big salary or a journeyman

That salary is not a cap breaker
      Wallace’s is

I would rather give up 7m than have journeymen TEs
I wouldn’t mind a draftee but we have other priorities

    • jahndoh says:

      Two thoughts:
      Gronk isn’t available (obviously)
We don’t have a good record signing others’ either.

  19. Silly Tim says:

“I know who every team in the NFL is going to pick in the 1st round of the draft. When I was working with the Yeti’s in the Himalayas, not far from my house in Nepal, I met a wizard who told me many great things.”
    – Brian Williams

  20. jahndoh says:

Long term Clay is going to be averaging 6.5M per year. That’s the market. He’s the best FA in this class, and the draft TE class is weak. Either we go WAY backwards at the TE spot, or we get pay the man. There’s really no other solution out there.

  21. Mike E. says:

Here’s my 1/4 of the roster draft 😉

  23. CaliGigi says:

Jahn: I am learning stuff all the time !! Kevin Costner’s new movie is about a small school here and he is from city I live in…cool!! I work in Fresno but live in smaller city with small cities around

  24. getterdone says:

Jahn, Clay is god, but not the best FA TE in this class. Julius Thomas is.

    • getterdone says:

      ^ good….lol not god.

    • jahndoh says:

Fair enough. I guess I figured since he can’t block that he’s not a fit here. But my point I think remains. Thin FA class, and thin rookie class. Avoiding a huge backslide means paying clay his market price. There’s little other option. I don’t think Thomas at 9 a year is better than Clay at 7, for us.

      • getterdone says:

I’m happy retaining Clay, he knows the system and can help Tannehill a lot now that we’ll likely add another receiver in the draft.

  25. getterdone says:

    Miami Dolphins ✔ @MiamiDolphins
Hickey: “We have used this option available to us with Charles with the hope that he continues to remain a member of the Miami Dolphins.”

  26. getterdone says:

So happy to not be a Browns fan. I feel for those guys….SMH!

ESPN Browns reporter Jeremy Fowler reports the team plans to add “at least” one more quarterback despite Friday’s signing of Josh McCown.
It will be in the form of a mid- to late-round draft pick or lower-tier free agent. The Browns can’t burn another day-one pick on a signal caller after last year’s Johnny Manziel fiasco, while they don’t have the money to commit to another one of this year’s “top” free agents. McCown’s three-year deal includes $6.25 million guaranteed, a princely sum for a 35-year-old journeyman who was horrendous in 2014.

  27. getterdone says:

Dennis Hickey’s former boss, @MarkdominikESPN, just named the Jags, Falcons and Dolphins are teams potentially interested in @NdamukongSuh

    • jahndoh says:

See Gil Brandt’s “Don’t believe anything season”.

      • getterdone says:

I know, but ya never know….lol. Miami has a strong need there. So do the Falcons

      • Brian in NY says:

It’s fun to dream Jahn. Don’t be such a realist!

      • jahndoh says:

Hey you guys know me. He’s a fin and I’m rooting for him. But I wouldn’t put any money on him coming here. I’d think drafting Shelton is more probably than that.

    • Brian in NY says:

You are probably right Jahn. I could see him going to the Raiders with all of that cap room. They would be a good fit.

  28. Brian in NY says:

  29. Brian in NY says:

    GDP,
I love the thought of adding Suh, but we would have to make a hell of a lot of cuts to make that happen. We currently have about $5 million to spend after the Clay signing, and if we sign Odrick at some point soon that would make signing Suh and virtual imposibility.

    • jahndoh says:

Yeah, but there’s at least 5 more of cap space that will be freed up IMHO. But I still don’t see it happening. Tannehill will be renewed this season with the extra space they can free up…IMHO.

  30. getterdone says:

The interest in Suh shown by Miami is likely just due diligence. I’d be happy with adding 26yo Stephen Paea for a lot cheaper and hoping what we have coming up in rotation will develop.
Thus saving some coin for a vet OG.

  31. son of a son of a shula says:

Go get Suh Hickey, just do it!

  32. son of a son of a shula says:

    Get Suh. Get Playoffs!

  33. CavalierKong says:

With our luck we’ll sign Suh to a ginormous contract, happiness and alcohol will be enjoyed by all, we’ll dominate the first week of the season by blowing out a SB contender by 20 points on the strength of our Dline and the following week Suh will commit that egregious penalty that gets him suspended for a year.

  34. son of a son of a shula says:

Let me just say this to Earl Mitchell:
Earl if we get Suh he gets your number. I’m tired of high priced free agents coming here and throwing off their mojo by having them switch uni numbers. Suh wears 90 in the NFL and it needs to stay that way.
    Thank you

  35. Silly Tim says:

I’m not even going to focus on Suh because I don’t believe it will happen.

  36. Silly Tim says:

You could argue Julius Thomas is a product of being on such a potent offense with Peyton. A lot of times when guys like that go to another team they’re not all that.

    • jahndoh says:

They weren’t on the same page much this year. I feel like Clay’s been a more consistent producer over their respective rookie contracts. Thomas built his reputation in 2013 with Peyton, and barely maintained it this season.

      • Silly Tim says:

He stills scored 12 TDs which is what jumps out at everyone. Not sure he does that anywhere else.

      • jahndoh says:

It does jump out at everyone, but I agree that it’s a product of Peyton almost as much as it is Thomas. Wherever he goes, they’ll pay him for 12+ TD production and he’ll get 8-10 TDs, complain about his targets and the honeymoon will be over. Sound familiar?

  37. dbolt48 says:

    Brian,
I like the Barnes pick in your mock. If he can develop a year or 2 he could be really good!

    • Brian in NY says:

I agree. It was a bit of a homer pick, but I think the value was good there. He has a high motor and can get after the QB.

      • dbolt48 says:

He has some intriguing traits like Wake coming out of PSU. His athletic ability and the bend he can get around the corner is really special.

      • Brian in NY says:

Good points dbolt. He’s definitely worth taking a flier on if he’s there in the later rounds.

  38. jahndoh says:

I saw the Wallace poll for the first time today. It has no “Trade him if it’s there, cut him if not” option and therefore I declare it invalid.

  39. Mike E. says:

Adam Beasley ‏@AdamHBeasley 1h1 hour ago

Dominik just called Suh a “generational free agent.” Compared him to Reggie White. Said the Dolphins 1 of 3 teams with a real shot. Uh oh.

  40. dbolt48 says:

@RapSheet: I agree RT @Robi2184: NFL Network’s @RapSheet calls the #Dolphins a wildcard willing to pursue Ndamukong Suh
    *
These guys are full of shit. No way you do that with the cap situation.

    • Brian in NY says:

We have $11 million in cap space right now after the Clay signing. If we cut Ellerbe and Wheeler, Suh is a real possibility. If we re-sign Odrick, he’s probably out.

      • dbolt48 says:

Not going to happen especially when you have the Raiders & their $60 million in cap space.

    • jahndoh says:

Not. Gonna. Happen. Sorry Son et al…

  41. Brian in NY says:

I can’t believe the draft is almost 2 months away.

  42. Brian in NY says:

The only thing that is bull shit is these guys getting our hopes up of getting Suh here.

    • dbolt48 says:

Finances won’t work. If it was next year and were sitting on a boatload of cash, then maybe, but I don’t see this happening at all.

  43. getterdone says:

    Omar Kelly ✔ @OmarKelly
When you folks get pimped & realize Suh isn’t coming to Miami. That his agents just USED the Dolphins I’ll be here to pick up the pieces

  44. getterdone says:

  49. Rockphin says:

why are we carrying $667.43 against our cap in dead money for Even Finkenberg? WHO THE FUCK IS EVEN FINKENBERG?

  50. Silly Tim says:

    Thanks, Brian, on the cap.

GD, I wasn’t waiting by the phone hours ago. LOL

  51. Silly Tim says:

So how much cap space do we have at this very exact moment?

  52. getterdone says:

Instead of paying Suh that kinda money, I rather sign, DT Stephan Paea, FS Rahim Moore, & LG Clint Boling as the main FA moves besdies Clay & possible Odrick staying.
Then have fun with a more open freedom in the draft. Draft a big WR early, then LB in the 2nd.

    • Brian in NY says:

I hear you, but I think it’s time we made a big splash. I’m not talking about overpaying for hopeful, up and coming LB’s who underperformed for two seasons. I’m talking about signing the best player at his position.

  53. Silly Tim says:

Fans are like a lake. NFL agents toss out there lures and everyone catches their limit. LOL

  54. Mike E. says:

Suh changes the entire face of our defense. It also opens up the draft for WR, OL, LB, CB and S. No need for a DT.

    • Silly Tim says:

Wait until you see what his market is. Mario Williams has a $98M deal. Keep going.

    • Brian in NY says:

Yup. If they can find a way to make it work I’m on board. Two things that concern me though:
      1. His potential for a lengthy suspension
      2. We would be investing a ton of money annually in two players soon: Tannehill and Suh

  55. son of a son of a shula says:

Hickey you know what to do.
    Go get Suh.

Seriously that would be more influenced by Tannenbaum’s need to make a statement more than anything else imo, and really I’m fine with it. Get Suh here and draft 5 more guys like Landry and let’s roll.

  56. getterdone says:

I know he’s a blocker eater, but Suh has only one or two forced fumbles over his NFL career. With his strength and long arms you’d think he’d have more strips. Even if the ball carriers are never running near him….lol

  57. Silly Tim says:

    Thanks for the cap info.

I’d prefer we add some solid FAs to fill some voids and make a splash in the draft. I’d be okay with trading up more than down. Not necessarily in the 1st, but maybe in the 2nd (4th rd pick) and in the 3rd (5th rd pick) to target guys we really like and have high on our board. Then we finish with a 6th and 7th. We have a lot of developmental players. We need more ready-now impact players.

Twice a year doing that to Brady – Priceless

lol. that is funny that you think that. so sweet you think roger baby would let that happen. he got suspended for stepping on rogers then it was appealed and he got to play. can you imagine the ban he would get if he stomped on brady.

all kidding aside, there is no way in hell roger will let him play in miami. he will suspend him until brady retires.

  59. Silly Tim says:

Brian, remember what kind of cap hits and dead money those super large contracts create. It’s not just guaranteed money.

    • Brian in NY says:

True, but I’m willing to roll the dice on a player of his caliber. It’s not often someone like him hits the open market.

No way is Suh like haynesworth, they’re totally different. Suh works, Haynesworth never put in the time.

  64. finfanrob says:

    son

i wish it was just a joke but we all know it isnt. roger will suspend the living shit out of suh if he is in the same state as brady much less the same stadium.

  65. Silly Tim says:

I’d rather sign a 2nd tier anchor DT in FA and draft Malcom Brown than blow my wad on Suh.

    • son of a son of a shula says:

That’s because you love 8-8, lol jbb

    • Brian in NY says:

I’m tired of being a 2nd tier team, Tim. I’m ready to take some chances. Doing it the so-called “right way” hasn’t gotten us anywhere in the last decade.

      • Silly Tim says:

How is drafting a good prospect like Brown make it 2nd tier? The 2nd tier FA is just a space-eater who plays 20-25 snaps that fills a void for us. Brown is the prospect with upside.

  66. Silly Tim says:

With the whole Goodell/Pats love affair and their cheating ways. When we discussed poison pill contracts earlier it made me think, of course it was NE in 2007 offering Welker a contract as a RFA that stated: “if he plays more than 4 games in Florida his entire contract is guaranteed.”

They never stop with that nonsense.

  67. finfanrob says:

    Brian in NY says:

Wouldn’t that mean they are on the same team?

aaahhh no. i mean other teams travel to NE and play agains……wait you are right. no one plays against the pats, they play against roger and the nfl. basically the pats play with themselves.

  68. finfanrob says:

    tim

yep they never stop. why i think sighing suh will only lead to roger suspending him for getting with in 8 yards of brady. it is a terrible idea.

  69. Silly Tim says:

Brian, when exactly have we done it the right way recently? We recently blew a wad of money in 2013 that didn’t have the impact we were looking for. Changing coaches and using FA to turn the roster around has not worked. We still have players we drafted from the last three classes who need to step up and get the ‘right way’ going. Add some impact in the 2015 draft.

  70. son of a son of a shula says:

Tim, they just mocked Brown in the top 10 on NFLN. We may have a better shot at Shelton.
    Mon frere…

    • Silly Tim says:

I’ve been seeing him in the 14-17 range. That’s all I was going by. I like Brown more than Shelton. Shelton might be better as a pure NT in a 3-4. He’s very slow – 5.6/40. I know it’s not about track speed with lineman but that’s tortoise range. LOL

  71. wyoming85 says:

Add through the draft and live with the results!
    FA killed the radio gods!!!!!!!!!!!!
    😉

  72. getterdone says:

Brian, I’m tired too on being 2nd tier team. That’s why from day 1 I was saying we should swing for the fences, but do it in the draft.
Take a questionable character in DGB, but who’s upside is off the charts. Do the same with say Josh Shaw, Marcus Peters, Perryman, Perriman, Dorsett, Kendricks…..

  73. Silly Tim says:

GD, if you draft a questionable character in the 1st round don’t complain when your team still isn’t a playoff team.

DGB doesn’t just have off-the-field concerns, he’s considered very raw and limited in fundamentals at this time. He didn’t even play last year.

I know you envision him running past and jumping over everyone, but it doesn’t usually work that way.

  74. Mike E. says:

I’d bet Shelton goes before Brown.

  75. Mike E. says:

Who cares how fast your DL runs? C’mon!!!! Odrick is fast and he can’t fucking SNIFF a QB! We need a guy that’s going to demand double teams and sometime beat them. That’s Shelton.

  76. getterdone says:

Tim, I hear ya…but my point was….take the chances with draft picks here and there because you get them so much cheaper these days. We saw that chance taking on Dion Jordan, so far it hasn’t worked out. But the next one might!
Beats over spending for broken down vet FA’s year in and out.
    It’s a fine line. Being a GM isn’t easy.

    • Silly Tim says:

I don’t think it’s easy to be a GM either, even though everyone plays one on a blog. LOL

Who said sign broken down vets? Maybe don’t sign broken down vets. 🙂

      • getterdone says:

LOL, no one said sign broken down vets, but it happens…seems we see more FA failures than hits.

True, but I’m willing to roll the dice on a player of his caliber. It’s not often someone like him hits the open market.

Not entirely true. Dead money=(Guaranteed money/years of contract)-guaranteed money already paid. As you can see, Guaranteed money is the most critical number for that formula.

I’m here for you guys. Let me help. 😛

    jk/bb!!!!

    • Silly Tim says:

Well tell me what the issue is with cutting Wallace and Ellerbe then? Seems like a lot of dead money in their 3rd year.

  78. Mike E. says:

    GDP

You’re comparing Manny Wright to Danny Shelton? WOW! Where is that coming from? I think Shelton’s going to be a very good NFL player.

    • getterdone says:

Saban thought so…lol I don’t, but point is, there are busts every year and not the pretty ones that the cheerleaders sport.

  79. dbolt48 says:

Right now is the moment Miamis been waiting for…Trade Wallace straight up for Andre Johnson.

    • getterdone says:

That could happen too, but Johnson @ 34 still has $10.5 & $11M left on his final 2 years of his contract.

  80. getterdone says:

Wallace in year 2 of Lazor’s offense could draw the doubles leaving Adre Johnson with favorable matchups. There’s your big WR leaving Landry in the slot and Wallace & Johnson on the outside. That’s about 24 TD’s between them all. 🙂

The Houston Chronicle’s John McClain reports the Texans have given Andre Johnson permission to seek a trade, and if one can’t be found, he’ll be released.
The Texans informed Johnson that he’ll have a reduced role in 2015, and the soon-to-be 34-year-old has asked to be cut or traded. Houston will grant him his wish. We highly doubt any team will trade for Johnson, considering he’s scheduled to earn base salaries of $10.5 million and $11 million the final two years of his contract. The Texans will clear $8.825 million against the cap by shedding Johnson’s contract. The move will lock DeAndre Hopkins into the clear-cut No. 1 receiver role after he took another leap forward as a sophomore in 2014.

  81. Mike E. says:

    Tim

You’re on! How do we quantify their play though? Shelton is going to be more of a space eater than a sack guy. I’d bet if Shelton were here, our run defense would be a whole lot better.

    • getterdone says:

May take him a year or two.

    • son of a son of a shula says:

In 5 years after they play out their rookie deals you can see who gets the bigger contract.

    • Silly Tim says:

Brown is also a very good run defender. He’s a natural wide body at 6-2 320 who can move his frame — 5.05. Again not the tell all, it just means to me that he can shoot gaps, slide up and down the line and make plays. Shelton reminds me more of a Soliai or Raji, the only difference is they both moved better than him too.

I liked Shelton early on, but have backed off because I feel he’ll be a limited 2-down NT type where Brown can be a 3-down player.

I think we’ll both know who the better player is in a few years.

  82. Mike E. says:

    GDP

Manny was a 5th RD Supplemental Draft pick. Shelton is likely a top 10 REAL Draft pick

    • getterdone says:

True, but Baby Huey was the first thing that came to my tortured mind.
How about Clowney, he’s not healthy, or BJ Raji, Aaron Maybin.

  83. jahndoh says:

I tend to agree with the idea that it’s better to take risks on draft picks than with free agent signings. but I also agree with the concept of avoiding unneccesary risk with BOTH the draft and free agency. I think with DGB you’re incurring way too much vs. the risk presented by drafting another young talented WR in that slot. Randy Moss was only a sure thing in retrospect. Coming out he was just as much Charles Rogers as he was Randy Moss.

I kind of agree with Tim that if you’re going to take risks like that you are going to endure some 8-8 seasons.

Regarding Suh, I don’t really know. My common sense says no way. But if the “once in a generation talent” thing is true, Maybe you have to make a play. I’d still bet against it happening. Curious who here honestly believes that once in generation thing?

Also, to catch up…lol @ Son regarding 8-8.

    • son of a son of a shula says:

Once in a generation is tough to quantify but I’ve always been a Suh fan and advocated for trading up to get him and he’s still just as coveted and that much more experienced 5 years later. The potential for a long suspension exists but that is really the only risk.
Hanging out on SoBe instead of 8 mile may take care of those anger issues.

    • getterdone says:

Gee I’d sure hate to risk taking DGB and having another 8-8 season. 😉
Agreed on Suh not being a once in a generation player. In fact statistically his best season was his rookie season. He’s declining rapidly….lol. Ok not rapidly, but weird seeing that when I checked out his stats again.

  84. Silly Tim says:

Wait, didn’t the Texans just re-sign Andre Johnson?

  85. Silly Tim says:

GD, you suggested “Beats over spending for broken down vet FA’s year in and out.” How else am I going to respond? Don’t do that! LOL

  87. finfanrob says:

once in a generation????? yeah the fins had one of those. more then a generation. probably in the the history of the league best ever type of talent. and how many SB’s the marino win? i dont know much but for sure as hell know this game is more then one player. suh can be once in a generation but he is going to eat up 20 percent of a teams cap. that isnt going to win any one a SB

  90. The Flying Pig says:

    I know you like brown
    And I like him too
But I think Shelton is the best run stuffer in the draft

And after Shelton it’d Eddie Goldman IMO
But Goldman doesn’t offer much pass rush
Brown is a lot more versatile

    • Silly Tim says:

I know, I prefer Brown’s skills more. I think we can add a 15-20-25 snap or whatever it is anchor in FA relatively cheap. A no name lunch pail guy who plays the run well but isn’t going to give you much pass rush. I don’t like drafting 2-down players in the 1st round unless they’re pass rushers in key situations.

      Shelton to me is a 2-down 3-4 NT. I don’t like him as a good fit in a 4-3. That’s just me. I wouldn’t draft him top 20.

      • The Flying Pig says:

I think Shelton has shown he can play 3 downs
        He is Wally unique

But he will be gone by 14 anyway

Brown is probably the 3rd td off the board

  91. getterdone says:

Tim, I’m gonna rail a hotty tomorrow nite. (code for stop blowing money on guys like Wheeler & Porter….

    • Silly Tim says:

I agree. It didn’t work out and I’m saying don’t do that.

Wait Porter? Joey Porter? Didn’t he lead the league in sacks the year we made the playoffs in 2008?

  92. jahndoh says:

“Well tell me what the issue is with cutting Wallace and Ellerbe then? Seems like a lot of dead money in their 3rd year.”

    Sure.

Wallace was guaranteed 30M total. 11 of that was signing bonus the rest was salary in years 1-3.
The contract was 6 years so that’s 2.2 of signing bonus attributable to each year of the contract (when calculating dead cap hit).

In year one he recieved 12m of his guarantee (bonus+salary). In year two he received 15m of guaranteed money (all salary). In year 3 he’s due to recieve 3M of his guaranteed.

His dead cap hit is the remaining untabulated signing bonus (2.2*3years) and the remaining guaranteed money (3m). 9.6M.

So there you have it. LOL..like I said. I’m here for ya Tim. 😛

    • Silly Tim says:

LOL, I’m not a finance guy and don’t care to be. But how does the dead cap hurt our overall cap availability? That’s what I’m not getting. Does the dead cap subtract from our available cap funds in 2015?

HERD: I ABSOLUTELY LOVED YOUR STORY ABOUT BECOMING A DOLPHIN FAN. –And I shared your view on the Pennington vs. Henne issue. AS one who saw Henne play in Big 10 games, I was convinced that he was, at best, a back-up quality NFL player. Ohio State fans used to tell “Henne Jokes” on the air (radio station WBNS in Columbus) the week they played Michigan.

Your discussion of Super Bowl XVII also brought back some not-so-good memories. I was at that game. I think brown is more run supper than you are giving him credit for

He might even be able to be developed into a NT
