Wedge Scouting Report: Ben Heeney

BenHenney1Wedge ID

Everyone in the universe knows about Ben Heeney right?  Right?  Um…right?  Okay, he may not be very high on your draft board.  So put him on your draft board already!  This guy can play.

BenHeeney2

Ben Heeney is an overachieving, unathletic throwback linebacker right?  Right?   Um…right?  Wrong Earthlings!  Just wrong.  I have no idea why the Kansas linebacker has  people convinced he is just an overachiever who plays at a basketball school but if you believe Heeney is an overachiever you have never been more wrong since you bought that Rick Astley album.  Didn’t think anyone new about that did you?

BenHeeney6Chip

Hey Ben, What is that on your shoulder?  A chip?  Well that explains your 4.59 40 time.  Or your 3 cone drill in 6.68, or your 20 yard shuttle in 4 seconds, or your 60 yard shuttle in 11.06.  As it turns out Heeney was one of the most athletic linebackers at the combine.

BenHeeney3

But what is the combine by itself?  What did he do on the field?  In his time at Kansas the 6’0, 231 pound linebacker racked up 335 tackles including over 35 for a loss.  He also had 4.5 sacks, 4 interceptions and 3 forced fumbles.  That production lead him to a first team all-Big 12 player in 2014.

NCAA Football: Kansas at Kansas State

Heeney is a sound tackler who demonstrates excellent technique on each tackle.  When he gets there, you are going down and trust me, he is getting there!  He has great instincts, which is probably the most important trait of any inside linebacker.  Heeney moves laterally fluidly and can chase down the ball carrier.  But really what impresses this alien the most about Heeney is his coverage skills.  Matt Miller thinks he is agile enough to drop into a cover 2.

BenHeeney5

If I was going to compare Heeney to an Alien Weapon of Destruction, I would compare him to a venusian sheep.  I know, I know…a sheep?  Well listen: we used to use these sheep to destroy planets.  We would drop them off and fly away in our rockets.  All the local aliens would say “awww, look at the cute little sheep”  but underneath that cuddly wool – would be something like your Earthling wolves.  And the wolf would eat them while they slept.  It was awesome.

Thanks Wedge! I an going to be shamefully honest- I do not read scouting reports, not just yours- I don’t read anyone’s. It’s mostly because it does not interest me: ” 6’2″ 255, 4.65 40, good in space, active hands..”.. you know who’s good in space? Astronauts. I’ll let you experts have your time. But I do respect it, and I really appreciate the effort you all put into your articles.

Wow-it looks like I’m going to have a big typo day, and I haven’t even had my first St Patrick’s Day beverage yet- usually a shot of Tullamore Dew. I even sent my boss an email, with the word “underachieving” just hanging out there at the very end, with no relation to the purpose of the email. I told her the underachieving was an accident, but she may decide I was being passive-aggressive and rip me a new one.

I like Heeney but he’s a 5th round player w/ elite special teams ability. He’s a developmental prospect that if he does become a starter in his career is probable as a WLB. I wouldn’t get my hopes up to high about him as a MLB.

    ———————-
“NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported Tuesday that Ellerbe’s base salary for 2015 has been chopped from $8.425 million to $1.1 million, per a source who has seen the deal. Ellerbe is guaranteed to make $4.9 million in 2015 off additional signing and roster bonuses. Previously scheduled to earn $6.45 million in base pay in 2016 and another $6 million in 2017, Ellerbe will now average $5.2 million over those two seasons with bonus pay factored in.”

  41. D's avatar D says:

Heeney has great instincts, he has good technique and shed blocks well at the college level. I added that caveat to the last compliment because im nervous about his ability at the NFL level. I watched a good bit of tape on him previously but after reading this report went back to review and i believe he is a really great LB prospect with one shortcoming.

His arms are pretty short and i noiced this before actually going back and looking up his measurements at combine. I was watching him tackle, and be sure that when he gets hands on a guy its done, but you could see he had trouble wrapping his arms around tacklers. He compensates by having exceptionally strong hands and when he locks those fingers down he doesn’t seem to slip off guys. I also noticed it when OT’s would get to him on second level, the OG’s he shed no problem, the OTs though he had a lot of difficulties getting off those blocks.

I did go back and check his statistics and as expected 30 3/4 inch arms, with 9″ hands. How does this hinder him? In college these guys aren’t elite and you come across guys with shorter arms when makes it more of an even match, in those cases he won most battles, but in the NLF he will be going against elite players and those match ups are going to leave him at a disadvantage.

He plays with intensity and just from on-field persona from watching him play, i think he is the type player we would want. He doesnt have elite height, and he doesnt have great body mass, but being 6′ with 230ish weight makes him a low and solid center of gravity. These are good things for a MLB, but as with the shorter arm length, his lack of weight, could come at a disadvantage to him in the NFL and he would need to put on at least 15lbs of muscle. He also only put up 19 reps int he BP, which means he is not strong enough currently to fight off NFL caliber OG’s who will average in the 315-340 range.

His coverage ability seems decent, especially in man on RB’s he blankets them and stays in good position to make plays ont he ball. His zone work was hit or miss, sometimes spectacular positioning and breaking on the ball, sometimes not so much. I have no concerns that he will be able to run with most RB and TE’s but he gives up about 5″ to most TE’s on height and i didn’t see anything in film that suggests he will be able to defend them on a passes thrown high. His vertical of 33.0 isn’t that great either (in reference Kendricks was 38.0 both being 6′).

He currently has a grade of about 4-5, and that seems very fair for a guy like him. Again, its not that these shortcomings are going to sink his career in the NFL, but it definitely makes it difficult going against guys with average arm length 3-7 inches longer than yours and with weight advantages of 80-100lbs. He will have to make up for some with pure effort (something he seems like he would do) and though some of these can be changed, and im sure will (weight for example) some of them cant and you would just have to hope he could make up for them in other ways to be successful.

    ———————————
I think if teams sleep on him, ie look at the numbers and just don’t really dig into film, his 4-5th round could slidt to 6th, but i feel pretty solid on round 4-5 because i think a small portion of teams will overlook him, but a good chunk of them wont overlook his instincts. I think he looks a lot like Kendricks but with less athletic ability. He probably does compare to Zach, similar shortcomings, similar passion for playing, and like Zach could wind up overcoming all of that to be a real stud. Its just a gamble, so again, even the interested teams will likely play it safe and wait until 4th or so becfor selecting him, but could all change depending on if round 2 run on ILBs happens.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Come on man, it’s out there. I’ve read about the guy. It’s not just off the field stuff either. He’s considered very raw. With the moves we’re making, I don’t see how drafting an unpolished WR in the 1st round makes any sense.

I’m pretty sure he won’t be our pick, but you can keep dreaming. LOL

    • D's avatar D says:

I think the big deal was what went down in the NFL last year with the domestic violence shit, and since his biggest event centers around it, i def think it will have a bearing on people ideas about him and the risk associated with drafting him. That being said, its not like we are picking in the top 10 and its not like we wont eval risk vs reward with him and if he comes out the best option and we feel his risk isnt high, i am sure we would take a chance on him. I think more likely though is the possibility of having he and Parker both available at 14 is good, and if thats the case we would likely select Parker over him and part of that choice likely is due to the risk despite it being big or small.

Mike E: The moment I read the Borland news I thought of Cameron. Maybe with the Keller injury fresh on my mind it’s worse, but I really hope we still re-sign Clay at this point, who’s also an injury risk, but at least it’s not his head.

    For Tim:
    “Tim Knight says:

Am I wrong or do the Bills have to offer Clay a 3-year deal worth $21+M or 4 year $28+M to exceed Miami’s one year transitional tag at over $7M”

    • Jahndoh30's avatar jahndoh says:

They can offer him anything. League minimum.

He won’t take that though, he’ll sign the 7M tag. I COULD see them offering him something that averages less than 7/year and him having to make a decision about short term vs. long term, but if it’s much less I’m sure the fins will just match. They only have two objectives here 1) Offering enough that Clay signs the offer sheet, and 2) Making the offer something the fins won’t match.

According to sources, the probability of that is 48.984024850%

    ****
I’m thinking round 4 maybe even round 5

I’m not too worries about his weight
Linebackers need to be more agile than ever considering how much they have to drop in coverage

I feel like most of the LBs coming out now are in the light side
Kendricks is only a pound heavier and be is expected to go late first early 2nd

That is the new model of LBs
    They have to run

Heeney (and Kendricks ) can do that
    And they can tackle too
That is what matters to me

It’s traditional strategy for Transition Tagged players. Basically you wait for your opponent to show all his cards, than you act with more information.

Raiders signed RB Trent Richardson, formerly of the Colts.
Why not? Richardson is very likely coming at the league minimum with little to no guaranteed money. The Raiders will give him a look-see during OTAs and see if he can make it to training camp with the club. If he doesn’t cut it, the Raiders can release Richardson with no penalty.

Mike E — for me it depends on Clay or not. If we get him I figure we will be going more 2 TEs (or one TE and Clay) sets and won’t need a stud wideout in the first as much. Plus both Landry and Stills have a lot of thread left on their tires, including their cheap contracts.

So my wife and daughter were reading it for their mom/daughter book club, and they take turns reading it independently and with my wife reading it aloud to my daughter.

This morning my daughter is a little sick and we kept her home from school. After getting to enjoy NONE of the story they’re reading, I just heard my wife read her the chapter where Little Anne and Old Dan die. I get nothing but the sad part of the book and a wife and daughter crying.

  84. Jahndoh30's avatar jahndoh says:

I’ve now heard both Scott Pioli and Gil Brandt say they could see 3 WRs go in the top 10 (11 for Pioli). If we can’t get Cooper, White, or Parker, I don’t want to go WR with 14. Strong is also quite good, but not 14 material IMHO. DGB had all the talent in the world, but I’ve heard both 3 former GMs, and read reports of at least 4 current ones who wouldn’t touch the guy in the first round…and I’m of the same mind.

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

I have no problem with Strong at 14. He has great size and good speed to match that. He has done nothing but help himself at the combine as well.

      • Jahndoh30's avatar jahndoh says:

Size and Speed and Combine are all below route running and mechanics for a rookie WR in my book. Which is where Strong falls short of those other 3. He’s also got “ok” speed for a wideout, but he’s not as explosive as I’d like to see in pads.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

GD is gonna put a cap in your ass. LOL

    • dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

Trade back. Try to target Nelson Agholor, Justin Hardy, Breshad Perriman, or even Coats.

      • Jahndoh30's avatar jahndoh says:

I would agree. If not those top 3, best to target the next tier in a trade back. Grab Hendricks later in the first (although with Borland retiring, I could see Hendricks going as early at 15th at his point) and target those guys in the 2nd.

    • D's avatar D says:

If those three are gone, yeah i would trade back, but i have been looking over a lot of resources and i cant see where all three will be gone. Jets added vet WR’s and i have hear are more interested in Tre Waynes now, Raiders are about 50/50 and you never really know with them until its announced, but i think they take White/Cooper. Minny i woulda had pegged at 11 to take a WR, but trading for Wallace i think pushes it to later round need for them. Cleveland might would, but signed Hartline and likely Bowe next, so i think they may wait as well. I think we have shot at one of the top three if not 2.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Strong at 14 is sort of like taking Juwann James at 14

Try to trade down if possibel
but if you like the player and you are there
      take him

  86. Ken's avatar Ken says:

What’s up FUers? pretty amazing about Borland. I am not sure what to make of it. If he is legit about retiring and his reasons then more power to him but hard for me to say that there is not some other agenda going on. He has played this game at a high level thru high school and college. He is one of the few to make it to the pros and apparently excel at that pros. He is in line to make millions. The info of about concussions has been out there for a while now and all of sudden as he finally has made the mark he retires after only one season and walks away from millions of dollars. Just a gut feeling we have not heard the last of Borland just yet.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

      What would the agenda be?

      • Ken's avatar Ken says:

Not sure Tim. Maybe he wants out of SF, maybe he is legit but to me it just seems odd at this moment he decides he wants to retire, especially as the Niners continue to implode.

      • Jahndoh30's avatar jahndoh says:

Good question. He’s entering the 2nd year of a rookie contract…there is no legal way for him to renegotiate or get more money (as set out in the CBA), so I don’t see what the “agenda” could be.

Jahn, you think the 49ers will reach now because of their LB situation?

    • Jahndoh30's avatar jahndoh says:

I have a feeling you think Kendricks at 15 is a reach, but I don’t. Unlike Strong, I DO think Kendricks at 15 would be much like us taking James where we did last year. If you like the player and you have a need, you take him. You’re gambling that he’d be there later.

FWIW, since I have a known Kendricks bias, I will volunteer this: I didn’t come up with that idea independently, I heard it being discussed on NFL radio yesterday in the wake of the Borland announcement.

  90. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

    • Jahndoh30's avatar jahndoh says:

Then the niners will retain full rights to the player. There’s no end game there without concocting a very very unlikely scenario which would probably include court cases that would cause the issue to drag out for several years.

The kid’s done playing football. Another way to look at it is: He got paid a couple million bucks on his rookie contract and at least he hung on long enough to get a windfall. For any of us that’s a lottery winning like payday, it’s not chump change.

  93. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:
