GAME 15: Cincinnati @ Miami, Dec. 23, 1973
THE AFC SEMI-FINALS
The Miami Dolphins opponents in the 1973 AFC Semi-Final Playoff Game were the 10-4 Cincinnati Bengals, winners of the AFC Central Division. The Bengals had closed the regular season by winning their last six games. The streak included a 27-0 thrashing of the eventual NFC Champions, the Minnesota Vikings.
The Bengals were led by quarterback Ken Anderson, one of the NFL’s most accurate passers. His top receivers were future Hall-of-Famer Charlie Joiner and Isaac Curtis, who led all rookie receivers in 1973. The running game was paced by AFC Rookie of the Year “Boobie” Clark who, like Miami’s Larry Little, was an alum of Bethune-Cookman College in Daytona Beach.
Unquestionably, the best known name associated with this franchise wasn’t even a player. Instead, the most famous member of the Bengals was the team’s legendary head coach and general manager, Paul Brown. Paul Brown was the greatest innovator in the history of football. PERIOD! Brown was the first coach to use game films to scout opponents. He also used college game films to scout college football talent prior to the draft. Brown was the first to hire a full time staff of assistants and the first to test players on their knowledge of the playbook. He also gave intelligence tests to prospective draftees long before the Wonderlic Test was created. Brown invented the modern face mask plus a system of hand signals to call plays and defensive formations. He also developed a system of messenger guards who would bring in each offensive play from the sidelines. The passer’s protective pocket and the draw play were also Paul Brown creations, as was the short pass system we now call the West Coast Offense. Brown taught this offense to one of his assistants, Bill Walsh, who would go on to use it with great success in San Francisco with stars Joe Montana and Jerry Rice.
At age 24, two years after graduating from Miami of Ohio, Brown was hired to be head coach of Massillon (Ohio) high school, the very high school he had quarterbacked just six years earlier. After an ordinary 5-4-1 first season, Brown’s Massillon Tigers would go an astounding 75-4-2 over the next eight seasons, including a 35 game winning streak!! In 1939, Massillon built a 20,000 seat stadium, naming it after Brown.
In 1941 Brown was hired to coach the Ohio State Buckeyes. In 1942, he led Ohio State to their first national championship. In 1944, Brown was commissioned as a Navy first lieutenant. His job? Coach the Great Lakes Naval Training Station’s football team (which he led to a 9-2-1 record) against a schedule of major, established, football programs.
After the war, Brown took over the Cleveland All-American Football Conference franchise. The owner, Arthur McBride, named them the “Browns,” in honor of their highly successful coach. Brown would win all four league titles in the four year existence of the AAFC, losing only a total of four games in those four years.
In 1950, the Browns, Colts and the ’49ers of the now defunct AAFC were absorbed by the NFL. Amazingly, Brown’s team WON THE NFL TITLE IN THEIR VERY FIRST SEASON IN THE NFL!! They would go on to reach the NFL title game THEIR FIRST SIX YEARS IN THE NFL, winning three and losing three title games! In all, the Browns had made it to a record 10 straight title games, counting their four prior years in the AAFC! And Paul Brown had become the first coach ever to win a college football national title and an NFL championship!
In 1961 advertising executive Art Modell purchased the Browns. Paul Brown no longer had sole control of football decisions. A furious Brown was fired by Modell not long after Modell had agreed to extend Brown’s contract for another seven seasons! For the next seven years Paul Brown was paid $82,500 a season by Modell while he checked-out other coaching possibilities.
His search ended with the new AFL expansion Cincinnati Bengals, a franchise he invested a large sum of money in. The Bengals took the field in 1968, just two years after the Miami Dolphins, the AFL’s first expansion franchise. By 1973, Paul Brown had this Bengals franchise in the chase for the Super Bowl.
It was a bright, cool, 55 degree day in the historic Orange Bowl. Nearly 75,000 screaming fans crammed into every nook and cranny of the old stadium. Even the temporary seats installed in the east end zone were completely packed. A deafening roar greeted the white clad Dolphins as they jogged out on the field. It was PLAYOFF TIME and I was as thrilled as I could be to witness football history!!
Head coach Don Shula believed his team would have great success running the football. The Bengals’ D-Line was a bit undersized. And they lacked quality depth. Shula also believed Miami’s running game eventually would open up opportunities for the passing game, in general, and for Paul Warfield, in particular. Warfield, of course, was fresh off his spectacular four touchdown performance in the first half of Miami’s blow-out win over the Detroit Lions.
The Dolphins won the toss and elected to receive. Starting from the 20, Griese employed a variety of running plays. Csonka ran inside. Morris ran outside. Then, from the Bengals’ 13 yard line, Griese spotted an open Paul Warfield. Warfield cradled the precious touchdown pass and the Dolphins had a quick 7-0 advantage.
The Bengals Horst Muhlmann connected on a 24-yard field goal, narrowing the margin to 7-3. Again, Muhlmann’s kickoff went through the end zone, forcing Miami to start from their 20.
No problem. Just as before, Miami marched down the field. Csonka, Kiick and Morris were having a field day behind Miami’s awesome offensive line. From the one yard line, Larry Csonka scored easily, ending a second long drive and giving the Dolphins a 14-3 lead after one quarter.
Cincinnati’s defense stopped Miami on their third drive. So Griese decided to take to the air on his fourth series. A 48-yard bomb to PAUL WARFIELD brought the Orange Bowl crowd to an absolute frenzy! Two plays later, Mercury Morris scooted in for a touchdown and the Dolphins seemed in complete control leading 21-3.
Again, Miami’s “No Name Defense” stopped the Bengals in their tracks. After a punt, Griese took his offense onto the field. I was thinking, “One more touchdown will put this game away!” Well, I got my touchdown. Problem was, the WRONG TEAM SCORED THE TOUCHDOWN!! A Bob Griese pass was picked-off by Cincy’s Neal Craig and returned 45 yards for a touchdown. The Bengals’ bench exploded as they finally had something to cheer about. Even Paul Brown was smiling!
After stopping Miami’s next drive, the Bengals confidently moved across midfield. Muhlmann’s long 46 yard field goal narrowed the gap to 21-13! On the ensuing kickoff, Mercury Morris FUMBLED!! Another Muhlmann 3-pointer made the score 21-16 at halftime. The Orange Bowl was in a state of shock!!
Quarterback Ken Anderson confidently led his Bengals out onto the polyturf surface for the first possession of the third quarter. But another Anderson, Miami’s Dick Anderson, had other plans. He intercepted the Bengal quarterback’s pass near midfield and returned it all the way to the Cincy 28 yard line!!
Quickly the Dolphins moved the ball to the seven. Griese’s perfect slant pass to tight end Jim Mandich was good for a touchdown! Miami had regained the momentum and now led 28-16! Late in the third stanza, Garo Yepremian lined-up a very long 50-yard field goal. Morrall’s hold was perfect. The kick was in the air. It was GO-O-O-OD!!! Out came the white hankies as Dolfans throughout the Orange Bowl celebrated a 31-16 lead at the end of the third quarter!!
The fourth quarter mostly consisted of Miami running plays which ate up lots of time. First down followed first down. The clock kept moving. A Yepremian 46 yard field goal expanded the lead to 34-16.
One final stop by Miami’s defense put an end to it. The Dolphins had easily defeated Paul Brown’s Bengals for their 23rd consecutive win in the historic Orange Bowl!
Miami registered a playoff record 27 first downs. Csonka, Kiick and Morris combined for 241 yards rushing ON EXACTLY 50 RUNNING PLAYS behind Miami’s dominant offensive line. Throw in 159 yards passing by Griese and the Dolphins had exactly 400 yards total offense to the Bengals 194 total yards.
Paul Brown passed away in 1991, 24 years after his induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton. His son, Mike Brown, succeeded him as club president. In 2000, the Bengals opened a new football facility on the banks of the Ohio River. They named it Paul Brown Stadium.

Having said that, Tanny wasn’t as accurate as advertised in pre-season, nearly eliminating both our TEs by overthrowing them. The D Line was neutralised in a concerning fashion. Why the hell won’t Lazor call more running plays? And boy were we vanilla on both sides of the ball. Philbin’s personality there for all to see. I thought there’d be rust in the game, but way underestimated how much – some of the performance was closer to mechanical failure than rust.
Still, we came up with big plays when it mattered and won on the road. Here’s hoping that we build on that and keep improving through December cos that’s what matters. Saw a great tweet that puts week 1 in perspective.

Did you know we have been taking American atheletes from camps set up to test them and one has already debuted at the highest level this year? He is a ruckman with a fantastic leap, plays for St.Kilda and his name is Jacob Holmes. His bro is a TE in the NFL. I forget which team.We have another couple of players close to first team selection as well. Very atheletic for their size.

Without being too much of a spoiler, Hayde’s fist touch was a muffed punt š¦ His other play looked good though. I was disappointed to see Ajayi on temporary IR – hoped he’d get a game at Wembley. Less than three weeks now – can’t wait!!!

Miami wins on a late hot dog FG, oops, I mean late Franks FG. These Jaguars won’t be a pushover. Blake Bortles stands toe to toe against Tannehill and the MIA defense, and the Jags get some good, tough running from TJ Yeldon, and as per usghe, no one on the Dolphins D really feels like tackling, so we’re left chewing our nails and pulling out a late victory, but, we’re 2-0 baby!
Similar to my thoughts, Mike E. We just don’t like to put teams away.. it’s like their moms pay the Dolphins to keep it close, so as to build their self-esteem.

I can’t stand Tirico, Gruden gets to be a pain with “loving” everyone. But OMG Berman and Dilfer was the worst ever. I can’t believe they let Dilfer on TV, on a national broadcast. Berman’s voice sounds different after every commercial and Dilfer is just a horrible broadcaster. Both of those games were made very difficult to watch by those announcers. LOL, the Eagles were amazing and unstoppable while they were coming back but once they lost they sucked out loud. Just call the game and save your espn corporate built hype and bullshit I don’t need it or want it. espn the worldwide ruiner of sports.

I was a HUGE sports fan until the espning of sports began. It didn’t happen right away they built up slowly but once they had the foothold on everything sports I don’t follow anything but football anymore. They completely ruined baseball for me with the way they cover it. And as bad as they make baseball what they do to basketball is even worse. Bunch of dorky white punks running around, “dime this, dime that” wtf are you even talking about?
I haven’t thought about it in that context. There was a time when I, too was a fan of consuming any sport, but as time has gone by, I’m pretty much down to NFL and whatever Miami team makes the playoffs in their particular sport.

I think Randy was getting tired of blogging.
My thoughts (since I seem to be full of them today!) is that Randy got tired of being put in the position of being some type of hater. I think he usually offers a fair assessment of things with nothing personal attached, but he was perceived by some as being unfair or heavy handed, particularly where Tanne, the O’line and soliai were concerned. I don’t necessarily agree with all of his assessments, but I always thought he was being fair and reasonable- unless he was purposefully not being so just to get under the skin of some.

I sent Randy an email last week generally checking in with him and making sure no one had pissed him off and he was staying away because of it. Offered to kick some ass if that was the case. He reponded Sunday and paraphrasing here, he wasn’t pissed but did get tired of some of the BS and I could liberally kick some ass as many of us here need it. And he thought FFR would enjoy it.
I hope he doesn’t mind my posting this, if so, I may have to give myself an ass kicking. Just wanted to update you on his status. A couple of us had wondered where he had gone and that prompted me to send the email.
BTW, I mailed out the prizes yesterday so winners watch your mailbox. First time I had visited a PO in a long time. Now I know why they are going broke. It was a hot mess.
I was actually impressed last visit at the post office, which was a few months ago. Staff was helpful, knowledgeable, and took care of business is in a relatively quick amount of time.

OD, DT’s dont normally make the tackles, their job is to eat blockers freeing the LB’s to make the tackles. What ya dont want to see if your safeties making most your tackles, because then it means your LB’ers werent doing their jobs effectively. Jones was 3rd overall in solo tackles, first in combined. This means he was around the ball and probably reasonable rank for solo, the bad part is our CB Taylor was 4th, and our MLB Sheppard was tied for 5th with people he should have had a lot more tackles than. This shows why we had so many issues with the up the middle runs. I think The DT’s did a pretty decent job, might could have put a little more pressure on the QB, but overall wasn’t a bad job by them. Sheppard was the one that really looked weak to start with and he settled into the job in the second half.
Anyone expecting much more than about 30-40 tackles by Suh for the season has the wrong idea about what to expect from him.
BTW, i didnt have a chance to do the game review, but ill get to it tonight.

Not sure if anyone stayed up to watch the Minny/SF game but I have never had to endure such pain listening to the announcers (Bergman & Dilfer). Those two should never be allowed to broadcast football together and perhaps Berman EVER.
I almost fell off my chair in disgust when Berman was trying to justify how a 10 yard punt return is the equivalent of hitting a home run with nobody on base.

No kitten. I never pay attention to those things, but that’s interesting to know. I don’t see any reason not to expect a close game.
Another thing about last night’s game, no matter how bad MacGoo was with the Dolphins a few years back, he’s got nothing on the Vikes offense coordinator. If I was the owner, i would have considered firing him on the spot after what the Vikes did @ SF. Nothing but shotgun formations and only 14 carries for AP against a high powered defense = JOKE.
And this morning the Vikes coach was quoted as saying “Maybe we aren’t ready for primetime” LOL. What a loser.

Suh and Mitchell are penetrators, but they were pretty ineffective against what the Redskins were doing. They didn’t get any pressure on the QB, didn’t blow up any running plays in the backfield, so I’m not really sure what they did do well. I would say nothing really. The Redskins ran where they weren’t, and not that it’s the DT’s fault that our LB’s weren’t tacking, overall, the run defense looked pretty bad.
Doesn’t help that the Fins were out coached in that regard (D scheme against Skins O) but execution (tackling) was the biggest issue for sure. There were too many missed tackles on 3rd down that allowed 1st downs. It seemed as if Alfred Morris was getting good yards after 1st contact.

Hereās why the running game worked:
Running back Alfred Morris: It was only the second time in his past 24 games that Morris surpassed 100 yards. He received good blocking, but he helped himself with hard and smart running. Morris gained seven yards on a second-and-10 in the first quarter when he froze the linebacker by pressing the hole. When Morris cut back to the middle, the linebacker could not reach him. Another time a short gain — four yards — stemmed from Morris running through a linebacker for nearly three yards after contact.
Later in the second quarter, Morris hesitated enough on an outside zone to the left, enabling Jordan Reed to gain control of his block and create a crease for nine yards.
āWe ran our bread and butter, which is the outside zone,ā Morris said. āTheir plan going in was to stop us from getting outside, which in the long run hurt them because it left the middle of the field open. We were able to find cutback lanes and get some tough yards. It was a good outing, but we have to do better.ā

Go back and watch it Mike, they took up their blockers, the OL didnt get to Sheppard who was out of position and ineffective tackling. Mitchell didnt look great, ill give you that but he wasnt awful, Suh wasnt dominant but they schemed for him perfectly. Even the review posted by Al puts most the blame on Sheppard.

very odd that is was one year anniversary of my doctors death and he mentioned he was have open heart and later that day a good friend mentioned he had cold sweats which is sign of heart attack. It felt like I was connecting with my doctor in some way.

I just read that another rule change has made it possible to score 1 point (other than an extra point kick). The chances are ridiculously slim but it can happen.
So you could have a game scored 1-55. Awesome.
Wasnt a change, just never was likely to happen. A blocked XP if it lands in the field of play could always be returned for a point. Likelihood just went up since there is more than like 10 yards of space for it to fall now.

I felt bad for Bridgewater yesterday. What a horrible game plan by Minnesota’s coaches. Nothing but shotgun and only 10 carries for AP LOL. Btw, not sure if you saw it but Teddy underthrew a deep TD throw to Wallace where it was clear there was pass interference on Mike but in classic Mike fashion, with contact to the arms at the point of catching the ball, couldn’t even fight through it to make a catch attempt.
That defensive performance last night by the Vikings D was one of the worst defensive efforts I have seen in a while. Hyde did his thing but I think anyone in here could have averaged 5 yards a carry in the 2nd half.

Prior to this year an extra point kick touched by a defender was a dead ball, there was no returning for points. There have been two changes this year. First a defender can return a missed/blocked kick to the opposite end zone for 2 points and second, (the one I was referencing), if either team scores a safety during an extra point try 1 point is rewarded.
Don’t understand why a safety would only be worth 1 point. A safety has always been worth 2 points but I guess the committee is stupid. It gives the team attempting the PAT a chance to kick the ball out of the endzone if theres a fumble and not try and recover it.

Hmmm, maybe i had college rules mixed up with it, but i was pretty sure this was true previousl in the NFL. Maybe it was then wasnt and now is again, because i really think i remember a time int he NFL that this was true.
