Mikey Says . . .

OK, so this week will be the first, and hopefully the last article called “Mikey Says” Unfortunately, I only got one question this week (Thanks Wyo!). What I then decided to do, was just give my impression of our first effort against the Redskins, and a little preview and some advice of what we need to improve on in that game.

First off though, let’s answer the question that was asked, he certainly deserves that much!

from Wyo

Q – Now that Lynch got STUFFED for a loss to seal the LOSS for the water chickens!
Can we finally quit hearing about “If they would have run Lynch they would have won the SB”?

For the Fins There seems to be a lot of Folks that must have drank the Kool-Aid?
But it’s not the usual Kool-Aid Swillers! It’s the negative Nellie’s!

Did everyone not realize our LB’s were the weak spot of the team?
That our line hadn’t had time to work together and there would be growing pains?

Nah, I still think the Seahawks should have run the ball, you go with what brung ya, and that’s what got the Seahawks to the big game game. It’s not like we were asking them to run from the 5 yard line, they were at the 1, so let Marshawn finish the tired, underinflated Patriots defense off and give Pete the Weasel the trophy.

As for the Dolphins, yes the LB’s aren’t great, but I did expect a lot more from them. Sheppard was non-existent, and although Misi and Jenkins were better, still nary an impact play from that group.

As for the O-line, I don’t want any damn excuses that they haven’t worked together. How did Washington’s O-line with RT Morgan Moses who is a new starter, RG rookie Brandon Scherff, newly acquired C from SF Kory Lichtensteiger, newly acquired LG from CLE Shawn Lauvao and pro bowl LT Trent Williams keep our vaunted D-line off of Kirk Cousins? Look at the Redskins D-line of LE Stephen Paea, NT Terrance Knighton, RE Jason Hatcher, and tell me which D-line would you rather block? We managed one paltry sack against the Redskins newly put together O-line, and it was rookie Jordan Phillips, not “Everything is different, Suh is here”, or Earl Mitchell, Vernon or the great EarthWake. Honestly, there are no excuses. This is what we chose to go with, and we will either be good or bad with it.

Thanks for participating as per usghe Wyo!
_____________________________________________

OK, now for some scathing commentary on our 2015 Miami Dolphins . . .

So a bunch of cut blocking no name Washington Redskins O-linemen neutralized the best D-line in football? WTF! Seriously? We’re OK with this? I’m not OK with it at all. That unit better show a helluva lot more than what they showed Week 1 against the Redskins. No run stopping, blowing up running plays in the backfield. No sacks, nothing! If it weren’t for rookie Jordan Phillips busting through, we wouldn’t have had a sack against WAS, and don’t tell me one was brought back due to penalty! WahWah!

I’m shocked how bad Sheppard was. This is last chance at ever being s starting MLB in the NFL, and he goes out there and makes 3 tackles and 2 assists, while the Redskins have 37 rush attempts, for 151 yards. That’s embarrassing. Was he spectating? Is he a big fan of Zach Vigil, and he’s trying to give him a leg up? Misi and Jenkins were better with 9 tackles, 2 assists and 7 tackles 4 assists respectively.

Ndamukong Suh? How many snaps did he play? I saw him in there an awful lot, but I don’t have an official snap count, but 1 tackle, 1 assist. He’s not Tim Bowens trying to eat up 2 blockers, he’s a penetrating beast that eats RB’s in the backfield, and drags down QB’s by their locks, but not Sunday. I think Suh was spectating along Sheppard, or maybe he’s a big fan of Jordan Phillips, and wants to see more of him.

OK, enough of the bad, let’s take a look at some of the good!

Jarvis Landry is the man, and I couldn’t have been more wrong with my criticism of selecting him in the 2nd RD. He’s my favorite player on the Dolphins, and if I were to buy a jersey (I’m NOT!!!), it would be his. He is a pleasure to watch every week, and I’m more impressed each time I see him play.

Reshad Jones was everywhere, and although he didn’t get an INT or a sack, he was making tackles all over the field, and yes they were tackles the LB’s SHOULD have made.

Brice McCain got his first INT in Miami, and although I had hoped Jamar Taylor would start, and maybe he will down the line, McCain played well enough. Grimes also got us an INT, and that’s what we expect from him, and he came through. We didn’t killed through the air, especially considering the lack of pass rush.

Jordan Cameron can make catches down the field. The last time we had a guy like him (NO, it wasn’t Charles Clay), was probably David Martin. If he can stay healthy, and he did take a couple of hard shots last week, he can be a good guy for Tanny to have. What a great diving catch he made!
Millertime looked good when we finally decided to actually give him the ball. 13 carries, 53 yards, but why we continue to not give him carries, i’ll never understand it. We could have 20 different OC’s, and MillerTime will STILL get 15 max carries a game. Baffling!

Did I mention that Landry is the man? Great job receiving, and his PR won us the game last week. When all else fails, look to Juice to get it done!

Really surprised to so much of Rishard Matthews. Not that it’s a bad thing, I was just surprised how much we saw Rishard, and how little we featured Greg Jennings and even more so, Kenny Stills.

Go Hot Dog! Franks didn’t miss, nailing his only FG attempt!

Darr averaged 43.5 yards per kick, and left one inside the 20, with a long of 63. Good job!

LaMike is NOT LaBron. Good Luck LaMike!

Fede looked good in the D-line rotation, playing more than expected with Vernon injured.

The O-line, I’m not going to kill them, but they weren’t great. They’re going to need to be a whole lot better when we face better defensive fronts than the Washington Redskins, that’s for sure. Face them we will too, because we have 2 games against the Bills, 2 against the Jets, 2 against the Patriots (Not that the Pats front 7 is so great, but they usually give us fits), 1 against the Texans, and 1 against the Ravens (losing Suggs hurts them, we’ll see how Za’Darius Smith fares). 3 sacks from the Deadskins = a lot more from most of the other teams I just named.

I really want to see our defense look scary to their opponents. They looked scary to me, and in not in a good way, but I want the Jaguars to be talking on the sidelines like “How can we stop those guys, they’re relentless?” I want them shaking their heads in disbelief as the sacks pile up, as well as the turnovers. I want our defense to be imposing!

I want our QB to look like an ALL-Pro, not an also ran. He can be better, he has to climb to that level. Not that he was bad last week, he wasn’t, he just wasn’t great either. Do it!

I want the real Ndamukong Suh led defense to take the field, and I want to see Cam Wake and Vernon reap the benefits of having Suh on the line.

I want us to be DEVASTATING! Do it!

GO DOLPHINS!!!

Nice job Mike. I couldn’t agree with you more regarding the OL and DL. Both were disappointing, the DL especially. I wanted Coyle gone in the offseason, and game one has done nothing to change my mind. Benton had better start living up to his supposed “OL guru status” soon, and I don’t wan’t to hear about the chemistry thing either; plenty of teams have inferior OL talent and do more. We have three #1 picks on the OL- get it done. Hopefully we can kick ass this week and straighten some of our issues out.

    OK, last first-
BOTW- nice chest, good in “Lucy”, overall she’s “eh”.
Offensive line lives up to their name (they’re “offensive”). My hope is for improvement, my expectation is less optimistic. The defensive line was a disappointment, but if you include preseason, they hadn’t played a full game together before Sunday. I expect growth from them as the season progresses. I have felt for some time our linebackers were sub-par, and I still think this this way. Still waiting to see from Misi what some have been saying they see. Landry was the man- easily the best example of effort on our team.
It’s a long season, and that was the first game. We’ll see how it plays out.

TOTALLY AGREE with you, Mike E!! – – Some on this board seem to equate criticism of any phase of the Dolphins with NOT being a good, loyal, Fins fan. –To that, I say “BULLSHIT!!” – – Those who don’t want to rock the boat and slide along with a mediocre franchise are certainly NOT helping the cause by accepting one non-winning season after the other. The purpose of the season is TO MAKE THE PLAYOFFS AND WIN IN THE PLAYOFFS, PERIOD!! Anything less is unacceptable (as in the last 14 seasons).

Mike E and OD, not sure who here has said the performance in the Skins game was okay or who berated other fans for not being loyal if they criticize the team. I feel like those type of comments come out of nowhere sometimes. Who exactly did any of this because broad comments like that seem to be on auto-pilot and just get regurgitated?

I don’t know one person here who thought it was a good opening day performance.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

  17. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    Tim

I think the 3 most disappointing things about last week was

    1) D-line looking anything but Ndominant

    2) The tackling of the defense, more specifically, the LB’s

    3) The fact that once again, we won’t just run the damn football.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I understand the running game in that game, we barely had the ball. We’re not a heavy run team and in games like this we surely won’t be. We’re more of a 25 rush per game team and we ran 18 times in this game.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I don’t understand the running game at all. We’re too pass happy. If we had the best O-line in the league, maybe it would make more sense. We didn’t start running until later in the game, and this one was never out of reach. I personally don’t like it.

  18. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Mike, like I’ve said before I’m not a big fan of our offensive system. But it is what it is.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

That’s fine, I don’t like it either. Don’t get me wrong, you need to throw in todays NFL, but if you want to go to the playoffs and beyond, you have to be able to run the ball too. I guess you’re right though about it is what it is. I doubt Lazor is going to change things up.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Until we see us run the ball more I won’t expect it.

To me it’s not so much about Miller getting 20 carries which is just a # people throw out there because it sounds good. I don’t care if he gets 17-19 but I’d like to see him get that more often than 9-13.

    • BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

It seems like we start the game by running a lot then we can don’t move the ball they start throwing more. I’m not sure why they can’t mix it up a little. Maybe that’s why the offense starts slow.

Mike — wouldn’t want to face Coach E in the locker room after a bad first half. 🙂

But yeah we need to see more out of the DL. Don’t see how it won’t happen. But will not think they schemed their running game nicely against what out DL does. Also hard to sack a QB who either ain’t passing or throwing the quick hits.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

They did scheme cutback runs against the DL but the LBs have to do a better job picking it up and the DL has to snuff it out more as well.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

No doubt the LBs have to pick up, but it wasn’t just cutbacks they rant the slant towards the middle over and over. that was to take advantage of both Suh and Wake pushing upfield. That push is good, but then they found a way to exploit it too…..think we’ll be seeing that play again.

  43. Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

    Tim,
Agree on LB play. I posted an article the other day from ESPN’s Redskins page that quoted Alfred Morris saying the Fins D played right into what they expected and how the D was vulnerable in the middle because of their plan to stop the outside zone Skins use. Morris is a skilled back, one of the NFL’s top 10, and he made the LB pay in one on one situations. Anyway, I’m going to cut and paste several comments/obvservations from various write ups made by the Skins ESPN writer:

“What we learned from the Washington Redskins’ offense (non-quarterback edition) after the season-opening loss to Miami:

Alfred Morris remains the best runner. Though Matt Jones received plenty of praise this summer, there’s still a difference when Morris runs the ball. He knows how to set up blocks and force linebackers to commit to the wrong gap. Jones can be an effective runner, but he’ll be even better when he runs lower. Morris gets extra yards after contact because he’s so low; Jones was more apt to use a forearm while running more upright. Once (or if) Jones becomes more consistent with his pad level and gets used to the game speed, he’ll take a big jump. Where Jones can provide a difference is on long runs. Morris rarely gets more than 20 yards (nine times last season; none longer than 30), but he’s so effective getting 10-yard gains to keep the chains moving.”

    http://espn.go.com/blog/washington-redskins/post/_/id/19853/redskins-right-side-fares-well-alfred-morris-remains-best-rb

Here’s why the running game worked:

Running back Alfred Morris: It was only the second time in his past 24 games that Morris surpassed 100 yards. He received good blocking, but he helped himself with hard and smart running. Morris gained seven yards on a second-and-10 in the first quarter when he froze the linebacker by pressing the hole. When Morris cut back to the middle, the linebacker could not reach him. Another time a short gain — four yards — stemmed from Morris running through a linebacker for nearly three yards after contact.

Later in the second quarter, Morris hesitated enough on an outside zone to the left, enabling Jordan Reed to gain control of his block and create a crease for nine yards.

“We ran our bread and butter, which is the outside zone,” Morris said. “Their plan going in was to stop us from getting outside, which in the long run hurt them because it left the middle of the field open. We were able to find cutback lanes and get some tough yards. It was a good outing, but we have to do better.”
    ……
The Redskins have had a tendency to veer away from the run too early — that was a knock on Gruden as an offensive coordinator in Cincinnati, too. But the Redskins really did show the type of offense they want to be this season: run heavy, play-action.

Indeed, Kirk Cousins completed seven-of-nine play-action passes for 104 yards.

    http://espn.go.com/blog/washington-redskins/post/_/id/19851/redskins-ground-game-rb-alfred-morris-provide-foundation-for-offense

    ——-
But a few things jumped out about Cousins’ game good and bad:

Decisiveness: Cousins’ strength all summer and even last season was getting rid of the ball on time. More often than not he hit the plant step and the ball was out. It’s a big reason Miami only recorded one sack. The Dolphins were in position to record two more late in the game with blitzes, but Cousins recognized the blitzes and the ball was out. However, one led to an interception and the other was incomplete. More on those in a minute. Don’t be surprised if the Redskins call for more quick throws Sunday vs. St. Louis considering the Rams’ defensive front. The Redskins lessened the burden on the protection with quick throws and Cousins did his part by not holding onto the ball on longer-developing play-action tosses.

I will admit I had Much higher expectations against Washington especially for our Defense.. I will also admit, I tempered those expectations a little (not a lot) once RGlll was out..

was a very slow starting game for our offense , and I don’t think we even got the ball until 1st 1/4 was half over.. that will for sure put a damper on run attempts..

I was pleased with the turnaround at the half, and the shutout they pitched in 2nd half.. and ALWAYS happy to get a W…

Last year we started like CRAP against Jaxonville, and only woke up in the 2nd half as well, and still eked out a W, this habit has to change… once we start playing better teams/tougher d’s it will be a LOT harder to come back from slow starts..

We are 1-0 and tied for first (and last 🙂 ) Team needs to make a better effort at the start on both sides of ball, cant depend on turning the switch at the half..

Here’s to a better start and a 2-0 record… at least one team in our division will be 1-1 let’s not join them ..

It was the Redskins. They’re far from an offensive powerhouse. I think we should have blown them out, It’s all relative.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Their offense wasn’t the issue in not blowing them out, it was ours.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

They shot themselves in the foot a few times, but they ran for 180 yards on us, and usually that spells disaster. We just lucked out the Redskins couldn’t capitalize. I think that’s an honest and fair statement.

    Tim,
I think some (not referring to Mike E here to be very clear) aren’t comfortable unless the fins are dominating (almost never) or there’s some conflict to be honest. I’m tired of the conflict. It’s wasted energy. It’s the reason some rail against their counterparts even when no counterparts exist.

    For Mike E:
Your 3 biggest points of contention and my “excusy” responses :-):
The DL underwhelming: I sincerely don’t believe this DL can be kept down for long. I’m not even the slightest bit concerned. Wake had a sack cancelled on a penalty, and I’m sure a couple more sacks were prevented by blatant holding. It is what it is, this team doesn’t get holding calls, especially on the road, but I firmly believe this is one of if not THE most talented line in the NFL and time will prove that out.

The running game: We’re simply not a run first offense. We’re not going to be as long as this staff is here. You’re wasting your energy even hoping for it

Tackling: Week 1 tackling problems are rampant across the league. They don’t tackle in camp anymore. It’s not exclusive to our team and it should get better. I don’t think you can shout a player into becoming a better tackler or I’d get all irate at the players missing tackles, I believe it simply takes game reps.

We won on the road without the help of the refs against a team that executed it’s blocking scheme extremely well. That’s a solid fundamentals coach. You can yearn for him if you want, but he’s not the one who got the W last week, so in all:

I think the team played “ok”, it’s simply the opinion I have formed. I know the team can play much better, and I like that we’re 1-0 with lots of room for improvement.

    • Jahndoh30's avatar Jahndoh30 says:

I should have thrown in about the defense. I’d rather have a sack and 2 INTs than 6 sacks and no INTs. The DL deserves at least partial credit for the INTs.

I like being 1-0 too, believe me. I think you can count me in as one of those people who aren’t happy unless we’re dominating, at least for this past week. I expected more, and got less. It needs to get better, because I don’t think highly of WAS, and when we face the better teams, last weeks performance won’t cut it.

ok, is this being a homer fan? to me it looks like wake is held…..not just held but blantely held…..4 or 5 times a game and it is seldom if ever called. i just kind of chalk it up to me being a fan and seeing things that may not be there.

Mike E. I’m up from taking my nap now….The orange bowl artificial turf was a big advantage for UM and Dolphins during the early 70’s because visiting teams didn’t know how to prepare for playing on it. Our players wore sneakers and padding whereas the other teams didn’t know to wear this protective gear. You can tell in old pictures if they were playing on artificial surface by the players wearing elbow /forearm padding.
Before they changed the surface to grass the artificial surface was a bluest/green color more blue than green.
PS : No harm in criticizing team in fact during the championship seasons 71-73 the fins were booed by hometown fans if they played badly going to the locker room for halftime.

Ahmed has been in the media spotlight since Monday, when he was arrested at MacArthur High School in Irving, Texas for bringing in a homemade clock. The ninth-grader says he’d built the device in the hopes of impressing his teachers.

Instead of praise, however, school administrators reacted by asking the Muslim teen if he’d tried to “make a bomb.” Ahmed was eventually arrested by police and led from the school in handcuffs. He was sent to a detention center, and later released to his parents.

“I built the clock to impress my teacher, but when I showed it to her, she thought it was a threat to her. It was really sad that she took the wrong impression from it,” Ahmed said in an interview this week.

A lot of players increased the second half to exceed their career batting average. The Mets batting averages during the second half is probably off the charts in the second half.
