Game Wrap Up with the Little Pr….um…some one else: Dolphins @ Titans

DLibertyandolphins Flag

Prawny is still in jail and missed the Dolphins win vs the Titans.

FREE PRAWNY!

But in his place we brought another long time Dolfan, Lady Liberty!  If you were wondering – No!  She is not a Jests fan…yuk

In fact, she made an appearance yesterday

LibertyPlay

Here she is…Remember seeing this play?  The difference between this game and every other game this season – the Dolphins did not fall behind early.  Actually they got ahead.

You can thank Lady Liberty for that!

Landryscore

And Lady Liberty loved what Landry did with the play.  It didn’t look like a touchdown but Landry made it one.

Let’s face it:  Even though the Dolphins were bad in their first 4 games, Landry was great.  He has been our MVP this season.

MathewsLiberty

Another consistent performer this year:  Rishard Matthews.  Matthews caught 6 passes for 85 yards on Sunday including a deep one, kind of, for 24 yards.

Matthews is having a pretty good season this year.  He has 23 catches and almost 400 yards.  That chemistry with Tanny is really paying off.

Matthews started vs Tennessee.

MillerLiberty

But passing stats were not really the story…something else was…

I don’t know what you call this…its been so long since I’ve seen it

I think its called “the trotting game”.

Whatever it is we did it for 180 yards on Sunday.  Lamar Miller had 113 yards trotting and a touchdown.  He did that on 19 carries which is almost 6 yards a carry.

19 carries – are you crazy!!!  Why would anyone give a running back more than 12 carries. Coach Campbell must be out of his mind.  What’s next?  20!  Maybe 21!  Then possibly the NFL record…which I’m guessing is 22 carries.

LibertySackWake

The other story – SACKS.  I remember what you call those things and they are delicious.

In this pic, Lady Liberty oils the ball right before Cameron Wake sacks Marcus Mariotta.  The sack caused a fumble which we recovered.

Wake had 4 sacks…4!!!!!

VernonsackLiberty

The Dolphins had 6 sacks on the day.  That is after only acquiring 1 sack in the first 4 games.  Vernon had 1 sack on the day.  Lady Liberty tried to oil that ball too but the QB went down so quick…

The Titans gained 299 yards on the day and only 63 yards on the ground on 18 trotting attempts.

JonesInt

And the Defense created turnovers too!

Rashad Jones had a pick 6.  The play was a huge play early in the 3rd quarter which you can tell by Lady Liberty’s celebration.  After the score the Dolphins lead the game 24-3.  By that time we were in the driver’s seat.

GrimesLiberty

The Titans would make a push…but it would not last to long.

Thanks Brent Grimes.  Lady Liberty wants to dress as Grimes for Halloween.  What do you think?

LibertyBird

Some people within the Titans Organization think the Dolphins were a bit too physical.

Lady Liberty salutes those people in this pic.

GatBath

What’s that Lady Liberty?  Coach Campbell is going to get a surprise!

He deserves it.  And according to Coach Campbell its right back to hitting each other this week at practice.

I mean i dont advocate for a guy to go to that extreme over it but its annoying as shit and people dont give a fuck. Try asking someone if they mind tilting it up a little bit and see the look you get and the fuck off its my space attitude ya get after. I wish they just took that feature out all together. Its a fight waiting to happen every time.

Stanger, Ross has been around practices over the years and may have seen Campbell’s demeanor and after a few people mentioned him as an option it just became a no-brainer.

  5. Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

    D,
Agree, some people are just rude about it. They don’t do it slowly and just ram it back with crap on the tray. Also, you get some jackasses who recline about 5 times a flight which annoys me.

    • Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

I rarely do it but if have one of those kind of persons in front of me, i stretch my legs as much as possible under their seat and if they complain about my feet then ill complain about their recline.

People are rude just walking around in stores as if they’re the only ones there.

  7. Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

    D / Cavalier
The ‘knee’ shot was unfortunate but it was clear to me that Vernon was trying to hold his balance up while tumbling forward so that he could make a play. He couldn’t tell from that angle of falling down that Marriota was getting rid of the ball until the last second. It’s a technique thing that the NFL wants players who are falling down near the QB to just fall down instead of trying to stay up to make a play.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

It’s one of those things where the player is kind of screwed. Either he intentionally avoids the QB which goes against everything his instincts tell him,or he gets the penalty.

    • D's avatar D says:

Yeah, i argued my wife about it when it happened and i truly dont think it was anywhere near intentional, but like ya said that’s what they want ya to do so if you dont attempt it they are gonna flag ya.

    ————————————-
I dont have issue with the people that do it courteously or the ones i dont have to hold their heads in my lap. They cut out all the space between seats but didnt change the features to go with it, Back in the day before they cut the space by 33% wasnt too bad, now its very unfair to the person behind ya, and doing it because the guy in front of you is, just shifts the burden one more seat back.

Even in youth sports I have noticed that coaches can make the biggest impact in football more than any other sport. So many things matter more in football than just overall talent. Emotion, passion, scheme, game management, off season prep, discipline, etc. Having a great coach or a great FO makes a huge difference. We’ve had a few great coaches since Shula, but none of them were truly committed to being here long term. Our FO has been a mess for a long time.

  12. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Watching the game again and I guess Darr actually only had one bad punt from deep in our territory. The first one (his 2nd punt of the game) was around 46 yards with no return, so his last punt is the only bad one.

  13. Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

    D,
Perhaps next time if someone goes full recline in front of me to the point where the top of the headrest is near my face; ill lean over with both arms folded and pull one of these

  14. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Great game yesterday on the road against a tough defense.

I knew it was coaching, not as much talent. The inspiration was there to compete against other professional football players!!!
But we also saw some nice changes/tweaks in the scheme/play calling areas, which is so critical in the flow of a game & game situations.

One further tweak I’d like to see is more jamming of receivers on 3rd & long passing situations, especially when the defense is calling for a blitz or sending more than the front 4. No free release there and it will disrupt the hot reads & timing of the QB’s we face in coming weeks, yes including even Marsha Brady!

    Go Phins!
    Go Dan the New Man!

    • D's avatar D says:

They had Dowling or Lippett in there they could play more press. Oh on that subject, did you hear in the interview after how Campbell gave credit to the PS guys, and specifically mentioned Dowling and Hazel. I think thats pretty good stuff there, and may mean those guys will be soon cracking the actives.

      • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Yes I heard that…..loved that he mentions the little guys way down the depth of the roster….it really motivates everybody in every phase to take it to the next level.

I hope Dan gets the permanent ink to stay past 2015 in Miami.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

The offense definitely tweaked some things and Sims being back made a big difference. I still saw the same defensive scheme though and the main difference was the front 4 were getting off blocks and creating havoc and that became contagious throughout the defense.

I think the main difference has been mentality. Philbin’s demeanor wasn’t working and it appears this team responds better to more intensity and physicality. Let’s hope it continues and isn’t just the result of the change and a rally cry.

  15. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

SMH, Dallas Thomas has 2-4 plays a game where he just gives up a blitz, stunt or plain whiff and gives a straight shot right to Tanny.

      Dallas Thomas has been bad

    • D's avatar D says:

I remember one play in particular where he messed up, but sometimes a blitz is supposed to be picked up by the OC or RB. Gotta watch the play because its not always the person whose gap the guy comes through.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

When the LT has a man and Thomas is doubling the center’s guy and there is no RB, when a blitz comes through Thomas’s gap it’s pretty clear though, lol.

        Ding!

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

And the play where he got Tanny killed on 3rd down in the 1st couple minutes of the 4th was clearly a missed blitz pickup by Thomas.

  25. drg's avatar drg says:

    Tim,

Totally agree. There was hardly anything different about the team yesterday other than the fact that they gave a damn for the first time this season. I love that Ross is willing to spend money, but he has been either absent or just clueless when it comes to overseeing the franchise.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Remember Philbin was the first HC he ever hired. I think everything that’s gone on over the last 5 years he’s learned from and that’s why he hired Tannenbaum to help him with such matters moving forward.

  26. Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

    Tim,
I expect Dowling to be what he was in college, a FS with ball hawking skills.

  27. drg's avatar drg says:

    Cav,

I’m with you. Thomas has been awful all year and that didn’t change yesterday. They have got to try something else at this point.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Drg, I appreciate that. I’m just trying to talk realistically and specifically about what I’m seeing as I rewatch the game, but it’s hard to do sometimes on this board without being forced into positions you’re not even taking. Unfortunately I think we’re still stuck with him because I don’t think we have another option.

      • drg's avatar drg says:

I’d put Douglas or Brenner in there. Can’t be much worse. I know Brenner would do a decent job at least.

  28. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Al, yep & the bad plays are when a player from the other team ‘who’s also a pro’, finally made a good play for himself and his team.

Trick is to make a lot more good plays than bad plays and for those few bad plays not to be game changers/losers.

Now Mario Williams is barking at Rex for his schemes. LOL
    ___________________________________
Not surprised by this at all and I thought this may become an issue when Rex was hired. Rex traditionally favors the 3-4 with heavy usage of the blitz. Williams fits the mold of a 4-3 DE. I always thought it was not the most compatible fit.

  30. drg's avatar drg says:

Gotta love the way Campbell is handling this. Might be a good fit as our HC if we can get a great staff around him. I think the Lazor/Saunders combo could work well. Rizzi was running around with his head cut off yesterday, but he could be a good complement to Campbell. There should be some good DC candidates out there this offseason.

Everybody loves the new guy, players included. What happens after the honeymoon and when the team faces adversity will be more telling.

  31. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Ken, I think that this fantasy era & humongous contract era has made these players more the divas than some already were.

  32. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

DRG, Thomas isn’t starting because Brenner is better and Douglas wasn’t benched because he’s the answer. That said I could see the OL change more as the year goes on after more and more physical practices but I also feel Thomas is the new whipping boy and there always seems to have to be one. If he’s as bad as some of you say he is, he wouldn’t be in there.

    • drg's avatar drg says:

I’ve seen enough of him to know he’s definitely not the answer. Douglas might be equally as bad, but he’s a rookie. Room for growth is the hope at least. I’ve seen enough from Brenner to think that he would make less mistakes. Not as talented, but I’d take less mistakes at this point.

  33. drg's avatar drg says:

    Tim,

He’s screwed up Harbaugh twice now. He hired a HC contingent upon keeping Ireland. He seems to rely on others advice without spending enough time on site to have an accurate feel for how things are going and what is needed. He’s loyal to a fault, or stubborn, or just afraid to clean house.

Sorry, not a fan of how he’s handled things since buying the team. Doesn’t mean he can’t correct it in the future, but it’s been ugly so far.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

That’s when he first became an active owner. He had no experience as a football owner. He inherited guys. People do learn from mistakes. I’m sure he has along the way to making billions. He’s only been really involved for 5 years.

How did he screw up Harbaugh twice?

      • drg's avatar drg says:

First time is well documented. I refuse to believe he couldn’t have convinced Harbaugh to take the Dolphins job over Michigan had he truly wanted him here. Just my opinion.

  34. finfanrob's avatar finfanrob says:

    kong,

i said yesterday i thought grimes got away with one. but there was a bit more to it. as soon as the player touched him he was down, so he couldnt take the ball. but whether he controlled it is a good question.

but after all the bad calls they have gotten i will take one iffy one going the fins way.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

We got lucky, that would have made it a one score game, but heck yeah, I’ll take it all day long. We have plenty that don’t go our way.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Teams all get calls go there way and against them and it’s about time we’re not always on the shit end of it. The Pats call the president of the U.S. if a call goes against them so there’s that to contend with. 😉

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I just wish we would get calls like that against some of the top teams. When we get the calls it’s always against the bottom feeders.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

The down on contact has to be with full possession and when you’re going to the ground you don’t fully possess it until you complete the process. It’s how you can have a guy make a catch on the sideline going to the ground being pushed by the defender yet it not be a catch because he loses it after hitting the ground.out of bounds. He would have a catch if he was down by contact.

  35. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

BTW, I have to admit that the Pats have a formula for dealing with a shuffled OL. I’d like our coaches to study it more.
Nate Solder was already out this week (on IR), the backup LT Marcus Cannon goes out with a foot injury, so there RT had to slide over to LT, and a back up RT came in the game.
They run the type of plays to get the ball out quickly and lots of misdirection stuff, plus those power screens to help Marsha out.

We can do the same by staying committed to the run game like they did with Blount & to develop our screens and quick slants better.

Pats have a very athletic OG in Shaq Mason from GT….he’s a guy I was wanting in the draft….he’s used to getting out on screens, off tackle & sweeps, and reaching the next level since GT ran a lot of triple option. Smart acquisition by NE.

We have a guy that’s not as athletic there, but not far behind in Douglas. Look forward to his continued development.

  36. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

On Ross….WTF was he doing in the locker room in Nashville….isn’t he supposed to be in NYC going over property acquisition reports??? 🙄

  37. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

DRG, gotcha on the Harbaugh to Michigan thing. I actually think he’s better off in college as adult players say he really wears thin on you after awhile. The same was said about Saban. There’s a reason it all came apart in SF after so much success.

  38. Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

    DRG,
I don’t like his connections with certain guys such as Carl Peterson & Mike Tannenbaum but there are definitely worse owners / front office guys out there.
Ross has one of the deepest pockets of any owner out there and he seems committed to winning which is all I can ask for as a fan. He has gone about it in an odd way since becoming majority owner but then again he inherited Parcells and those guys. Ross’s only flaw to date is not trusting his own instincts and hiring his own guys from the get go. Eventually the ship will be righted and I’m hopeful that Dan Campbell and his staff now can get the most out of what the team has in it’s players.

    • BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

I think his main flaw is he’s too loyal. This is not NY real estate. This is football. He needs to fire people sooner. He waited too long on sparano, ireland and philbin IMO.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Neither Sparano or Philbin made it through their 4th season since he became the active owner in 2011. Ireland was fired after the 2013 season. He really didn’t stick with them all that long when you really think about it.

    __________________________________________________________
He was down by contact and he possessed the ball all the way down. The ball didn’t come out until after he established possession and was ruled down by contact. The play was reviewed as all turnovers are. Even the Titans didn’t bitch about the call.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Completely inconsistent with going to the ground rules. He hits the ground and as he’s rolling over the ball is loose, then the Titans receiver takes the ball. Their coach threw the flag to get them to review it but there was nothing he could do because they “chose ” not to do a booth review. If this was a big time game it would be talked about.

    —————————————
I think he could play CB, difference in the skills of a FS and a CB are minimal. Id like some guys with size, but speed to run with receivers on the outside. I wouldnt care though if they had him at S or CB, but we have stronger need at CB i think.

  42. Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

Regarding Dallas Thomas, I think at this point he’s better on the outside IMO (tackle) and should be developed as one…in particular RT and at this point my projection for him is career backup in the mold of Nate Garner.

    • Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

He could be very solid at OG where he’s at now as many people see him on the current team but I just for the life of me cannot figure out how the F they cannot get him to change his lean or tilt (too high) when guys are rushing him. Thomas has to learn how to dig inside of people’s chest and also learn how to plant while getting pushed back. He skates too much thinking he can control someone with his hand technique after 3-4 steps back.

Thomas is the whipping boy. Its the guy that OL woes get fully dropped on everytime they are brought up, but i cant tell you there were 3 people i had seen start at an OL position this year that looked worse.

Fox is a liability, he CANNOT handle an even mediocre speed rusher. He is great as a power blocker, he handles strength moves pretty easily, but when they try to go around him, they are going crash the pocket and most likely strip Tanny as he isnt a bit aware of it.

Turner when he was playing in pre-season looked completely overwhelmed. He could handle stright up assignments blocking the man in front of him but when they ran a twist on him, or shifted inside his inside shoulder, i was like he didnt know what to do. It could be he has improved, but this was the first game he didnt look absolutely awful. Difference is most here WANT him to be something so they are still pulling for him and looking the other way on his faults, but he has never looked better than Thomas has, period.

Douglas also hasnt looked better than Thomas. I will give him that he is still learning, he is still developing and getting use to the speed of the game, but he has not looked better. Like most im willing to give him a break for being a rookie, but i just think most here will overlook everyone but Thomas. There are time when the OG is supposed to peel off his assist block and pick up a LB, or a twisting DE, but there are times that isnt his assignment too. Ill review this game and see what i think, but i didnt really see a bunch of breakdowns on his part. The OL played decent as a whole this game as evidenced by the good run stats and limited number of hurries/sacks.

Titans C Brian Schwenke requires season-ending surgery for a dislocated left ankle.
Schwenke suffered the injury in stomach-churning fashion against the Dolphins. The third-year pro is in the midst of a rough season, but it’s still a big blow for a team that can’t get its running game going. Sixth-round rookie Andy Gallik will take over at the pivot. It’s the second straight year Schwenke has landed on I.R. His 2014 was ended by a knee injury.

I am not from MO but this team has broken my fandom so they need to show me MULTIPLE times before I start sipping that poison again. Call it a fluke game. Call it lucky. Call it a game against a team that is not so good. Call it what you like, but ONE win against the titans is not enough to change my opinion of this team back.

NOT a big problem for me BUT my wife is NOT ABLE to walk 2 miles round trip due to her 4 surgeries and her current treatment she’s receiving!! –AFTER this past summer’s season ticket selling fiasco, this is THE LAST THING ROSS’S TICKET OFFICE NEEDED TO DO!! –SEEMS as tho’ no aspect of this football franchise can operate without MAJOR SNAFUS–Unlike the Huizenga era when parking and ticket sales were, in my experience, PERFECT!

i say it over and over i am just your average football watcher. i dont know more then the people paid to do the job. but that i never got why they didnt give the oline a chance to get into the game with run blocking. listen to any lineman that has played the game and they say they like that cause it gives time a chance to get more physical and go after the defense and not sit back to get attacked by the d linemen. i think that was a big key to yesterdays game, the plan to run the ball and stick with it.

No but they have in the past used 3 TEs because Gronk is also a weapon as we know. The Pats mix it up much like we did yesterday. They play spread/shotgun, but they also go under center and run it and utilize play-action passing. They try to stay out of one-dimensional football which we have put ourselves in this year too often. Yesterday was a good start at getting away from that.
