Game Day Wrap Up: Texans @ Dolphins

PiggyatGame

If you don;t know by now the Dolphins demolished the Houston Texans on Sunday.  And many Dolfans were there to see it, including this little Piggy.

The win broke an inexplicable streak:  The Dolphins were 0-6 against the Texans entering a game.  Well that changed in a big way.  The game was over by the end of the 1st quarter. By halftime the Dolphins had a 41-0 lead over the Texans.

MatthewsTD2

The Dolfans won the toss but deffered.  The Texans promptly when 3 and out losing 2 yards on their opening drive.

On their opening drive the Dolphins threw a few short passes to Jarivs Landry and ran Lamar Miller for a few first downs.

But the big play was a slant that was right on the money to Rishard Matthews who took the pass 53 yards to the house!  Most of the 53 yards was after the catch.  In this pic Prawn points out who Matthews is – and if you needed him to do that you are an idiot.

LandryTD1

So then on the next drive the Texans gained a total of minus 3 yards.  They went 3 and out again.

The Dolphins also went 3 and out after failing to covert a 3rd and 1.  And then they punted to the Texans again.  Who gained 7 yards – which is a total of 2 yards in 3 drives.  Guess what…they went 3 and out again.

And the Dolphins only managed 1 play on their next drive – but it was a good one.  It took Jarvis Landry 15 seconds to run 50 yards.  He basically covered the whole field.  Landry caught a pass about 15 yards downfield near the sideline.  It was an easy first down – step out right?

LandryBreakdwon

Nope – not Landry.

So gain a few more yards on the sideline

Nope – not Landry

He broke a bunch of tackles – and the downfield blocking was excellent

Boom one of the most exciting 50 yards TDs in Dolphin History.  Check out the breakdown.

Ladry3

Okay Landry that’s enough…

No…okay…MVP MVP MVP

After the Texans lost 3 yards on their next drive and went 3 and out…again…Landry scored his 2nd TD to give the Dolphins a 21-0 lead.

Landry finished the game with 5 catches for 83 yards.  Anyone who didn’t watch the game will not gawk at his performance.  But trust me he was out of this world fighting for every inch

MillerLongTF

So now its Lamar Miller’s turn to catch a 50 yard TD pass.

After the Dolphins went up 21 -0 on Landry’s 2nd score, the Texans pooped on their next drive.

The Dolphins drove the ball 83 yards finishing with a 53 yard screen pass for a TD to Lamar Miller.

Maybe Landry’s stats aren;t that impressive.  But Miller’s are.  175 yards on the ground and a long 85 yards TD run (not pictured here but it took the lead to 35-0) and 61 yards receiving – most of it on that screen.

Jonespic6

And don’t forget the defense.

All those 3 and outs early set the tone.

This is what it looks like when you score 2 pick sixes in consecutive weeks.

SuhandWake2sacks

And this is what 2 sacks each looks like.  Wake had 2 and Suh had 2

CampbellPrawn

And this is a happy coach!

image

Oh yeah

and guess who had an excellent game too…

4 TDs, 0 ints a perfect passer rating and an NFL record for consecutive completions (over 2 games)

    GDP,
I bet the Patriots lead the league in illegal picks inside the 5 yard line.

  30. D's avatar D says:

Im over Damien Williams, he dances at the line and fumbles. Dont remember who it was who said when Ajayai is back Williams is gone, but i kinda agree with it, at least as soon as we know he’s got his feet. I also really think they should have kept Gills.

    • D's avatar D says:

Read a quote by Miller the other day that pretty much confirmed what i saw earlier this year. He basically said that his running woes earlier stemmed from lack of opportunities, and when he was out there he was trying to make the most of every snap, but when he ran to the line he wasnt trusting the calls or the line having the hole open for him and tried to “make something happen”. He credits the new success with the play calling, getting more touches and trusting his OL, who he re-iterated was doing a great job.

I do think that the design of the calls seemed to me to be one of the most limiting factors, but he admits to dancing at the line, which is also something i was pointing out. Good to know things seem to be back ont rack for him because this is a big year for him and i want him to be successful for his and the team’s sake.

    • D's avatar D says:

Speaking of pick plays, we got away with one i think in the Houston game. It may have been within the 5 yard buffer, but i thought it might have been just outside of it. Either way it was a pretty play and close enough that they didnt call it, so maybe just executed really well.

  31. Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

    Trypod,
I’m sorry, I can’t stop laughing at your horse article…

  32. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

D, yeah I thought the same thing about Damien Williams. He’s really not much of rusher and the book on him coming out of college was he lacks instincts which shows up in games. He’s a very good receiver and plays well on STs but I don’t think he’s going to get many more rushes.

    • Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

He’s a power rusher on a team that doesn’t have much in that department.
If you think he’s a fumbler, you should see Ajayi’s resume.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

He fumbled Sunday but I’m talking more about his instincts. He doesn’t seem to know where he’s going.

  33. Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

I am reporting live from the team’s training facility to bring you all the latest on interim head coach Dan Campbell, quarterback Ryan Tannehill, defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh and the rest of the team as it prepares for Thursday’s big game against the undefeated New England Patriots (6-0).

The first television hits are during the 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. hours. So be sure to check it out.”

  35. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    Al

I don’t think Damien Williams is really a power rusher. I’ve seen nothing from him that says that. He is a good receiver out of the backfield though.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

      Jonas Gray is better.

    • Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

Well, what I mean by power rusher is that defenders don’t have the power to drive him back. Williams generally stays on his feet and has enough force to not fall back on impact. He may not be able to run over a defender, but when a defender tries to plow an offensive player and just goes no where, the impact advantage goes to the offense (tires the defender to use alot of energy into plowing a guy only to get stoned). He needs work but that’s why He’s a backup. He’s decent on special teams as well.

  36. Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

How rough has the Ravens season been?
They are 1-6 but after the game I heard that they have had the ball with under 2 minutes to go in every game with a chance to tie or go ahead in every game (either all or something like 5 out of 6). Rough lol.

    • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Been brutal for them. Flacco is having a down year, his receiving core isn’t much now, the OL struggles too, and their Defense is still looking to cover the holes left by free agency
John Harbuagh looked really anguished on the sidelines..

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

      Yeah something like that.

  37. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Miller was running bad before the change.
SO before we give up on Williams, I’d like to see what he does now behind the new calls & OL efforts, like it has worked now for Miller.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Miller had some really good runs prior as well, but way less opportunities. I haven’t seen any improvement from Williams rushing. He can spell Miller on 3rd down because he’s a good receiver at times but I would go with Gray as the #2 back.

  38. Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

    GDP,
I agree. You don’t give up on a player over 6 games when he contributed last year in different ways. He still contributes on special teams which is mainly what backups have to do. You still want a guy like Williams out there as a 3rd down receiving back. Gray is too much of a stiff to be a WR threat out of the backfield and Ajayi hasn’t proven a thing.

  41. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Al, watching Ajayi in college I think he’s the back who can do what Miller does despite not being quite as quick and fast. But he ran out of a lot of the same formations we run, specifically shotgun.

    • Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

Miller has always intrigued me going back to his UM days because he has the rare ‘take it to the house’ speed once he’s at the second level. He may not be the most consistent guy to rush 5-10 yards a carry but the NFL is all about big plays and all it takes is 2 huge rips to make a difference in a tightly competitive NFL game. Miller brings that and I love it.

      • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

He’s really developing into a star before our eyes….a complete back.
        He’s only like what 23yo?

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Agreed. He’s a playmaker who also run more physical than he’s given credit for. If we don’t re-sign him some other team definitely will.

  42. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

We talked @ the Fest about Ajayi coming back….some one is likely cut or put on PS.
I said I didn’t think Williams is eligible, as he’s played in too many games. But Gray could be a candidate for PS perhaps.

Williams is a stickier thigpen. He’s way more valuable in the passing game than rushing, but overall I still think he’s misused. His fumble was unfortunate, especially with so little opportunites. I wish we would throw a screen or a shuffle pass to him and get him in space where he works best. Split him wide too.

  57. D's avatar D says:

I havent seenanything from Williams outside of receiving ability that makes me think he will ever be a legitimate backup. I honestly feel that he needs to look to teams that feature a receiving back more so than we do. A team like KC, or Pats, maybe even the Saints or Eagles could fully utilize a guy with his skills. He would make a legitimate backup on teams like that. For us he is a 3rd down option in passing situations and him simply being on the field somewhat tips off what we are doing. He doesnt block exceptionally well, his running isnt decisive, he does fumble a bit. In our offense he would be better converted to slot receiver for us to utilize him more, and we already have a good compliment of receivers.

Ajayai is a more north south runner, we probably lose some of the receiving ability (though in college Ajayai was good at that as well), but i think as a backup RB, he is more useful to us, as a potential to replace Miller, also more viable in that respect. I probably was a little stong in saying i was over Williams but i do not see a future for him outside of a very emergency replacement guy. Gray and Ajayai have a lot more potential to be backups/replacements for Miller at this time.

TBH i have my heart set on Fournette in a couple years, so its pretty moot for me lol. We will hopefully be in a position to have to trade up to get him but he is the perfect back for us, and i wantssss it.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Our backs do have a combined 25 receps in 6 games which isn’t really light especially since our TOP was so bad the first 4 games. Williams will get some more opportunities as a receiver. Also his fumble Sunday was his first in his NFL career so he shouldn’t be tagged as a fumbler.

    • Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

      Forget Fournette…he’s going top 10.

      • D's avatar D says:

Wouldnt be surprised if he’s a number 1 overall. He’s ridiculously good and barring injury likely stays a consideration for that pick. Chubb would be a decent consolation prize, and there is a guy who is a freshman next year for UF, local kid here in Mobile area, thats likely going to be a beast in a few years too.

    • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

We keep improving our play calling, getting maximum effort, and the OL keeps developing/gelling, then I think we can have success with most of our RB’s or whoever we bring in.
This is why the RB spot has diminished last few years due to the abundance of passing in the league as well.

  58. D's avatar D says:

Speaking of ref fuck ups. Did any of you catch that one that had to be explained liek 30 times the other night. I think it was called a dead ball personal foul, but then when they set the down they didnt take the down away from them? Came back later and said they flag was thrown before the end of the play but year all play was stopped before the dude kicked the other player. The follow up shove was definitely after the play as well.

The refs this year seem to be calling more penalties, they arent at all consistent and they seem to miss ones with very definable rules. Is this year an all noob set of refs? There have seemingly been a whole bunch of games messed up by calls this year.

They are definitely calling more penalties, there was a stat put out compared to the last few years and it’s the most ever.

That was a horrible “mistake”. They even showed a replay during the broadcast that the player clearly reported.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

One thing that wasn’t explained that confused me, doesn’t the ref announce “#76 is eligible” or something like that before the play is run? The defenders have to be informed so, I guess if the ref didn’t announce it, Balt should have known something went wrong…

  60. jetsssuck's avatar jetsssuck says:

I watched a little of the NE former games this morning and I came across Brady throwing to receivers that break left or right after 3-5 yards downfield. He throws this pass before they make cut. Their must be something the guy is keying on to correctly make the throw in or out.

  61. Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

It would be genius if the Fins used that play the Ravens ran where the OT was eligible and caught the pass LOL.

The Jets knocked him around pretty good. If we can knock him off his route timing and Brady has to make adjustments on his timing throws we can have a real good chance to win. The Jets had brady making throws at wr’s knees and lower because he was disrupted on his timing throws.

    …from NYP

Yes, the Jets dictated play for most of the game, but they could not stop the Patriots on third-and-17 when Tom Brady (21-5 against the Jets in his career) connected with Julian Edelman for 27 yards to keep a crucial fourth-quarter drive alive that led to the go-ahead touchdown.

“That,’’ cornerback Antonio Cromartie said, “was the back-breaker.’’

Right before that, the Jets were unable to push the lead to eight points when Brandon Marshall dropped a would-be touchdown pass he had in both hands.

“You have to make those plays on games like this, so it’s all on me,’’ Marshall said.

The Jets, too, were unable to recover a strip-sack of Brady by Sheldon Richardson, an unlucky moment when the ball got serendipitously kicked right back to Brady at the end of a mad scramble.
