Welcome to – THANKSGIVING!

It’s Thanksgiving!

My Aunt Rita was a trailblazer. In 1973, she moved her family from Brooklyn NY, living on the 8th floor of a 23 story hi rise apartment building, to a house in Englishtown NJ, approximately 40 miles away. That apartment building was almost exactly 400 yards away from my apartment building, we lived on the 15th floor. We couldn’t believe that they were leaving Brooklyn to go to New Jersey! Brooklyn had EVERYTHING! The best restaurants, the best PIZZA (That’s right Stanger!), shopping for just about anything within walking distance. What’s in New Jersey???

Long story short, my family traveled that 40.1 miles to my Aunt Rita’s house every Thanksgiving. I probably don’t need to tell you, but that 40.1 miles took about 2-3 hours on Thanksgiving. I still remember the car rides, especially the early ones, thinking my Aunt Rita and Uncle Lenny had lost it, this place is “barren”, “it’s in the sticks”. What didwe know, we came from the city. I can’t tell you exactly how many Thanksgiving holidays I spent at that house, but it’s by far the greater majority, probably at least 40.

Just to add a laugh to the story, I currently reside 4.8 miles from that house. We won’t be going there this year (Aunt Rita is fine, don’t worry!), my niece recently purchased a house in East Windsor NJ, and she decided she wanted to have Thanksgiving at her house, and Aunt Rita and Uncle Lenny will be joining us as well.

Why the long story? Because Thanksgiving is all about family, however big or small, it’s all about giving thanks for the people you have, and the food you have to share with them. I love my family, all of them,  my sister, my nieces and nephew, my Aunt and Uncle and cousins , and although there have been times in my life when I’m sure I didn’t appreciate them enough, the truth is, I do. I look back fondly at those trips to NJ from Brooklyn, even though the traffic was a nightmare, and my dad cussed up a storm every year.

One funny anecdote before I go. On the way home, we had to go over the Driscoll Bridge to get to the Outerbridge Crossing which then took us through Staten Island to get to the Verrazano Bridge to get back to Brooklyn. There was a drive-in movie theater on the right side of the bridge, and when driving over the bridge, you caught a little glimpse of the movie as you passed, the screen was no more than 50-100 yards from the bridge. One Thanksgiving, they decided to show a movie with lots of nudity, and if the traffic wasn’t bad enough usually, you could imagine what happens when a movie is showing with naked women all over the screen.   You could only see as you crested the top of the bridge, because they put up wood slats to block the view, but when you got to the pinnacle, you could see. Well, I was about 12, and that was the BEST ride home ever! So what that it took 3 hours, it was worth it!

Enjoy the day with your families, whether it’s the two of you, or 50.  Appreciate what you have, and the people you have to share it with!

Happy-Thanksgiving-day1

A Holiday Public Service Announcement from Piggy:

Every year thousands of humans say turkey is not enough and add pork to their menus

Many piggies die without reason.

The fact is turkeys are jerks and have it coming.  Don’t eat ham today.  Ham is for assholes.

Good story Mike – I too had an Aunty Rita (small worlod – dad’s sister, long since passed away).
We don’t do Thanksgiving over here – we have to wait til Chrimbo to slaughter all our turkeys, but we do get 3 NFL games on satellite.
Anyway, I digress – having spent a thanksgiving with my best mate (=BFF) I know what it means to y’all and I hope each and every one of you has a good blow out with your nearest and dearest.
Best wishes from across the water

ON Thanksgiving Day with relatives. In 1989 my dream job took me from south Florida, where most of my relatives lived, to Colorado Springs, Colorado. A year later, the company was sold and we moved to Cowlumbus, Ohio, for the next 16 years. During almost all of those years, we’d hop in the car and drive over 1,000 miles round trip to be with family in either Binghhamton, New York (oldest girl in grad school there), or Chapel Hill, N.C., or rural central Tennessee to visit our youngest girl and her kids (our grand kids). Frequently, the drive was flat-out hazardous as 16-wheelers often were seen in the snow and ice filled ditches and medians. If we flew, flights were uniformly several hours late and the luggage was lost or greatly delayed. And the PRICE of airline tickets was outrageous! Yes, we absolutely LOVED to be with our family! But, eventually, the incredible stress and very high cost of travelling was more than we could tolerate. Our last 2 years in Ohio we stayed home for both Thanksgiving and Christmas. And me and my wife learned to actually ENJOY the holidays and a we learned to better appreciate each other. Our holidays were BETTER because of it.
    —————
The kids COULD NOT come to us because our youngest daughter was raising 2 daughters while battling increasing incidents of grand mal seizures. She has not driven in the last 15 years. And she’s had to give up a promising career as a hospital ER administrator. So we have to go to HER and her husband who frequently has worked on holiday weekends. Our other daughter, who is a single mom of our 2 grand sons, frequently has projects that are due back at corporate headquarters in Brussels, Belgium. She is a senior research scientist who works very long hours, sometimes on holidays.
    —————
My wife and I visit both of our kids as often as possible, sometimes in conjunction with nearby conventions I attend as part of my job. But we no longer do it on holidays. I wish WE COULD travel on Thanksgiving and Christmas without going nuts, but it’s no longer possible, thanks to horrid and expensive treatment by the airlines and poor winter driving conditions in the states where our kids live. We call them on those two holidays and tell them how much we’re looking forward to seeing them during the “off” times when the roadways aren’t covered by snow and ice and the and/or the air fares are reasonable. Under THOSE conditions, we can truly enjoy OUR FAMILY!!

Pizza was invented in New Haven Connecticut. It really is an American food despite the myth that it is Italian——-WRONG
    Who made the first pizza?

An often recounted story holds that on 11 June 1889, to honour the Queen consort of Italy, Margherita of Savoy, the Neapolitan pizzamaker Raffaele Esposito created the “Pizza Margherita”, a pizza garnished with tomatoes, mozzarella, and basil, to represent the national colours of Italy as on the Italian flag.—-
When did pizza come to the United States?

In America, Italian immigrants sold pizza in their stores and the first pizzeria was opened in 1905 by Gennuardo Lombardi at 53 1/3 Spring Street in New York City. The origin of the word pizza is uncertain. It is Italian for ‘pie’ and may have come from Latin pix ‘pitch’ or Greek pitta.
    http://www.passion-4-pizza.com/history_of_pizza.html

Lombardi’s on 53 rd Spring street is the famous place. If we ever get to NY this is one place we will visit and of course Ray’s Pizza.

And now for a recipe I use for leftover turkey sandwiches. We make 3 tins of cranberry since we know the kids and a lot of people will not touch any.

rye bread, lettuce, tomato and then mix small cranberry portion with mayo to taste, add in a little poppy seeds and a little chia seeds or don’t add either or just one. GREAT TASTE U can lightly toast the rye breed also

Adding to the pizza discussion, I was in Geneva for about 3 weeks years ago for work and didn’t really know a lot of French. I remember we had gone to a pizza place on Saturday, we were sitting waiting on it to be ready. Like most pizza places, you could see in and watch them making it, throwing the dough in the air and all that. Anyway, so ours comes out of the oven, looks really good, and then…..they break an egg so it’s right in the middle of it before they serve it. Same thing with calzone, I had ordered that one day at lunch, cut into it, and a big yellow egg yolk comes sliding out. Must be a European thing. Definitely never saw that anywhere in the US.

WELL MY SEASON TIX renewal package just arrived by special carrier. Ross wants me to call my “service” rep and pay-up by the 18th of December. Gonna be a lot of NON-RENEWALS with this idiotic policy which, no doubt, is the product of King Carl Peterson who greatly increased ticket prices and parking fees during his dark tenure with the Chiefs. Many are going to have to decide “pay for greatly increased ticket prices OR buy Christmas gifts??” The Dolphins will NOT be priority number one during the Christmas shopping season!!!!!!!!!

  54. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

rgs, we’ve been pretty bad in a bunch of games too. There are only a handful of good teams in the league this year. Everyone else is average or bad. So from week to week you see a lot of inconsistency. Even Aaron Rodgers has looked average in recent weeks. The Packers have issues at the skill positions so they’re struggling.

    • rgs322's avatar rgs322 says:

Yep, that’s my point. We aren’t very good either.

We have been pretty bad in all but 2 games this year. Even in the Philly and Washington wins, we didn’t look very good. Oh well, there’s always next year.

BROKE DOWN MY PER GAME COSTS for 2 seasons tix. Last year the total, including parking, was about $220 per game. This year, it’s exactly $265 per game, about a 20 PER CENT INCREASE!! –Parking passes, which were, I believe, either $20 or $25 per game this season are $30 per game next season, and that’s if you buy the season ticket package. I’m guessing single game passes will be HIGHER!! ROSS will drive MANY season ticket holders away with this Carl Peterson-inspired policy. Also, look for Ross to renege on the timing of many of his “upgrades” in his effort to squeeze every extra dollar out of his declining fan base. WHAT AN IDIOT!!

they need to cancel the farce all together and just have another thanksgiving. we all need another excuse to eat like we will never see food again. 🙂

    • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

      LOL, yep, all true.
I’m still waiting for major retailers & mainstream media to announce “jesus is the reason for the season’ or even a once simple Merry Christmas, which has now been denigrated.

Thus we now see more and more crime against eachother, oppression, violence, & depression amongst the masses in the absence of the true meaning of the holidays. Gee, imagine that….smh

‘the masses in the absence of the true meaning of the holidays.’

i am pretty sure the true meaning of the holiday is going out and buying a car for those on your xmas list. or at least auto makers commercials tell us that is the meaning

    • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

It’s absolutely maddening, mind numbing, and so annoying with all the car & diamond commercials there are being pounded at the viewers.
Guilting you into some sort of human emotion of buying one as the only possible way to show your love to someone….LOL

Must be a huge payday for the major networks as they rake in all those ‘clever’ advertising dollars. 😉

Black Friday is one the dumbest things we Americans do, well at least for those who do it, my family does not. LOL

I’m glad more corps are closing on that day saying spend more time with your family and we’ll see you in a couple of days. Or join us on Cyber Monday. Good alternative.

    • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

…as Tim posts this from his Ipad sitting in a tent camped outside of Best Buy.

LOL, nope… back in the house after attacking 1/3rd of the backyard leaves prepping for tomorrow to almost finish it off. They’ll be one last mild cleanup before winter the next couple of weeks. It’s gonna make spring better to build our new veggie garden next year, less cleanup and more garden. 🙂

According to two outlets, LSU coach Les Miles is reportedly telling boosters he’s departing as the head coach of the Tigers following Saturday’s game against Texas A&M.
Per Tiger Rag and NOLA.com, Miles told people at the Gridiron Club meeting that he would not be LSU’s coach after Saturday night. While he didn’t directly say he was leaving, it was reportedly pretty clear. From NOLA.com:

Well it isnt even Black Friday anymore, that shit starts before most have even finished Thanksgiving Dinner. Stores closing? I havent noticed, this Thursday evening crap is totally ridiculous…

  77. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

    LOL @ GD

I use the blower to get them into a spot then bag them. We have to bag them in our town. I only rake a little, the scraps. 🙂

  78. herdfan's avatar herdfan says:

We don’t bag leaves here. Just get them raked to the curb. A big truck comes around and vacs them up.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Yeah some towns in our state do that too but they pay a fine. It’s a safety regulation in NJ. In case kids or animals/pets are in those piles of leaves.

a couple years back my wife had to work at the 45 st,WPB sam’s club for black friday. Well she brought the overnight crew food from our thankgiving as she always does for the poor saps that are making triple time. She didn’t know about the alligator in the fenced off pond. She goes into the back of store so she could be let in. Well a alligator was in the walkway and scooted under the fence and into the lake. Well the people waiting outside for the next day black friday said they saw the alligator earlier. Well my wife had them wait inside the double entrance doors instead of outside. The customers said they didn’t mind being outside. What people will do to save a buck. LOL

I’ve read what you’ve said about the deforestation project that took place in your yard. How in the world are there any leaves to rake, much less enough of them to hide a small animal???

    GDP,
Embarrassing as it is, the mall fight in KY was a white-trash staged event that had nothing to do with Black Friday. I say embarrassing because it is the mall I was at between 9-12 with my wife and daughter, though we saw no fight. My girls wanted to go people watch and I don’t feel comfortable with the out like that on a crazy night like that- you just don’t know what an idiot might pull.

  87. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    Try

I wouldn’t be surprised either way. Both of these teams are up and down. The Jets have actually been down for a while this year. They haven’t been good since early in the season. Still, they’re more than capable of putting a hurting on our hapless crew.

    • TryPod's avatar Try Pod says:

The Dallas game was all I needed- once I saw how the panthers whipped them…

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Hard to do that though. You know we’re capable of playing well, it’s just far and few between. I really wouldn’t be surprised if we crushed the Jets 30-3, or if we lost the same way.

      • TryPod's avatar Try Pod says:

I don’t see it. Capable? Yes. But Campbell comes in, whips 2 teams and now we look exactly like we did prior, leading me to believe it was just the “rah-rah” effect.

  88. bat's avatar bat says:

“Surprising to see Packers get beat @ home by both Detroit & now Chicago. Aaron Rodgers sucks, has no pocket awareness, holds the ball too long, can’t hit the long ball, and doesn’t throw his receivers open.”

GDP … I realize that you are hopelessly in love with Tannehill, but to sarcastically compare the struggles of Aaron Rodgers, an established elite player in the league with a proven record of success, to the shot in the dark mediocrity of the unaccomplished Tannehill, is patently absurd. If you are seeking QB’s to compare to Tannehill in order to mitigate his failings, I suggest you set your sights much lower ….lol

    • TryPod's avatar Try Pod says:

I had a similar reaction to reading that- I’m just not the wordsmith you are. Also, I’ve been getting in more disagreements than I’d like to around here lately.

  89. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    Try

I guess what I’m saying is, we’re capable of beating a team when they play poorly, and we play well. HOU is on the same level as the Jets as far as I’m concerned.

  90. bat's avatar bat says:

Try …Disagreements are unavoidable when criticizing Tannehill. The Tanny defense forces are dug in and ready to fight any criticism, real or imagined. They are clinging to the notion that Tannehill is the answer at QB and the more it becomes apparent that is not the case, the more combative they become.

  91. bat's avatar bat says:

“I wonder if this will be a Met Life takeover, or a season ending Dolphins flop”

Mike … The Dolphins season is over and has been since the initial Campbell euphoria dissipated and Bazooka Joe’s Dolphins returned from their brief vacation.
