Welcome to – THANKSGIVING!

It’s Thanksgiving!

My Aunt Rita was a trailblazer. In 1973, she moved her family from Brooklyn NY, living on the 8th floor of a 23 story hi rise apartment building, to a house in Englishtown NJ, approximately 40 miles away. That apartment building was almost exactly 400 yards away from my apartment building, we lived on the 15th floor. We couldn’t believe that they were leaving Brooklyn to go to New Jersey! Brooklyn had EVERYTHING! The best restaurants, the best PIZZA (That’s right Stanger!), shopping for just about anything within walking distance. What’s in New Jersey???

Long story short, my family traveled that 40.1 miles to my Aunt Rita’s house every Thanksgiving. I probably don’t need to tell you, but that 40.1 miles took about 2-3 hours on Thanksgiving. I still remember the car rides, especially the early ones, thinking my Aunt Rita and Uncle Lenny had lost it, this place is “barren”, “it’s in the sticks”. What didwe know, we came from the city. I can’t tell you exactly how many Thanksgiving holidays I spent at that house, but it’s by far the greater majority, probably at least 40.

Just to add a laugh to the story, I currently reside 4.8 miles from that house. We won’t be going there this year (Aunt Rita is fine, don’t worry!), my niece recently purchased a house in East Windsor NJ, and she decided she wanted to have Thanksgiving at her house, and Aunt Rita and Uncle Lenny will be joining us as well.

Why the long story? Because Thanksgiving is all about family, however big or small, it’s all about giving thanks for the people you have, and the food you have to share with them. I love my family, all of them,  my sister, my nieces and nephew, my Aunt and Uncle and cousins , and although there have been times in my life when I’m sure I didn’t appreciate them enough, the truth is, I do. I look back fondly at those trips to NJ from Brooklyn, even though the traffic was a nightmare, and my dad cussed up a storm every year.

One funny anecdote before I go. On the way home, we had to go over the Driscoll Bridge to get to the Outerbridge Crossing which then took us through Staten Island to get to the Verrazano Bridge to get back to Brooklyn. There was a drive-in movie theater on the right side of the bridge, and when driving over the bridge, you caught a little glimpse of the movie as you passed, the screen was no more than 50-100 yards from the bridge. One Thanksgiving, they decided to show a movie with lots of nudity, and if the traffic wasn’t bad enough usually, you could imagine what happens when a movie is showing with naked women all over the screen.   You could only see as you crested the top of the bridge, because they put up wood slats to block the view, but when you got to the pinnacle, you could see. Well, I was about 12, and that was the BEST ride home ever! So what that it took 3 hours, it was worth it!

Enjoy the day with your families, whether it’s the two of you, or 50.  Appreciate what you have, and the people you have to share it with!

Happy-Thanksgiving-day1

I’m honestly not sure about Tannehill. I’m not convinced either way. I can’t judge him with the Lazor offense when the play calling confounds me. I think Tannehill can be better with the right HC and with a better OC. The thing that does bother me regardless of those things, is what can be perceived as a lack of competitiveness. I wish he had the Brady fire, because you can see Brady hates to lose. I wish Tannehill had that.

  2. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    Bat

    True, but mathematically we’re still alive, so . . . .

  3. Randy's avatar Randy says:

Go Hawkeyes! It’s time to see what the Big 10 Championship tastes like.

  4. bat's avatar bat says:

Mike … Many things in this world are mathematically possible yet realistically impossible …The Dolphins playoff chances are one of those things …lol

  5. bat's avatar bat says:

Mike … I agree with you on Tannehill’s lack of competitiveness. He also has no sense of urgency and does not seem to grasp the importance of the moment. I believe that he lacks the football IQ to be a top QB in the league and no amount of coaching is going to change that.

  6. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    Bat

I’m not sure anyone in the Dolphins has a sense of urgency. I think Dan Campbell is in over his head handling the HC duties he’s unfamiliar with handling. It’s not a great situation for a QB to be in. My hope is that if we finally get a rock solid HC, Tannehill can be reclaimed.

  7. bat's avatar bat says:

Mike … Perhaps …I just don’t see it … Tanny will always be a WR trying his best to play QB…IMO

  8. Randy's avatar Randy says:

Our season has been a great example of why a rah-rah type coach just really doesn’t matter, if that’s all they are. It’s great to have, but it only works for awhile. Eventually, the player himself needs to find that motivation to play at his highest level from within. When I keep saying: “It’s the players.” that’s part of it. I’m sure we’ve all played with both sorts of guys. Nothing is more frustrating as a teammate than a very talented guy who doesn’t give everything he can. On the other hand, a guy who is just average but plays his ass off can be extremely contagious and inspiring. What do we have on this team? We have mostly average guys who aren’t even playing to their potential most of the time….that leads to what we see most weeks…inconsistency and mediocrity. It sucks!

  9. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    Randy

I look at Reshad Jones on defense, and Jarvis Landry on offense that are the type of players we want and need. Not sure I can find any others.

  10. bat's avatar bat says:

“We have mostly average guys who aren’t even playing to their potential most of the time”…

And when one of those guys is your QB … well, you see the results…

  11. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Herd, we trimmed branches from the big trees so our backyard wasn’t a jungle. Most of the deforestation were smaller pines and bushes lining the entire property and overgrown. The big trees are still there as are our neighbors big trees so there are still plenty of leaves.

Everyone had a lot of fun with me chopping down trees etc. but it was highly exaggerated through jokes so now it’s kind of folklore. LOL

  12. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    Try

Why is Tannehill playing to his potential now, when he’s playing worse than he did the 3 previous years, when he improved each and every year? I don’t think that’s quite fair. Is Andrew Luck what you see now, or what he was the 3 years previous?

    • TryPod's avatar Try Pod says:

Why is he? I don’t know how to answer that. I don’t think he is playing worse, so we’re not even starting from the same place. I think he is a steady guy, and the parts and the methods around him change, which leads to what we have now.

  13. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Tim Bunyan cutting down all the damn trees

  14. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Bat, Tannehill has played a lot better than a WR trying to play QB. It’s easy to keep harping on him when the team isn’t that good and our offensive system is not very good. But let’s be real, he’s played at a lot higher level than people are giving him credit for. So now you have to either be elite or that’s not good enough. There are only a handful of elite QBs in this league and they’re not the ones who always go the furthest in the season.

  15. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    Bat,
You’re doing fine talking about Tannehill w/o me. Lol
    ***
I think it’s a bigger issue than Tannehill, anyway. This whole organization is a cluster fok and has been for years.

  16. bat's avatar bat says:

Tim … He’s not elite and I never expect him to be. He’s average to below average and he has critical flaws that have not been addressed in 4 years of less than impressive QB play. I thought going into this season that he might be able to be better than that, but it seems he will never overcome the mental issues and lack of QB intangibles that bedevil him.

  17. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    Try

Let me rephrase. I don’t think it’s fair to say he’s playing to his potential NOW, when he’s played better in the past. Philbin lost the team (maybe he never really had them), and now we’re likely in for a regime change. That can wreak havoc on a team, especially one that was wrecked to begin with.

    • TryPod's avatar Try Pod says:

People keep looking for him to make this “leap”- he is maxed out imo. Just because he looks worse to some does not mean he is not playing at his peak. As pointed out by others, Rogers is looking bad right now, but I don’t think anyone would say he hasn’t peaked.

  18. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    Bedevil eh . . . lol

  19. bat's avatar bat says:

Mike …LOL ..You caught that …

  20. bat's avatar bat says:

Mike … I wouldn’t worry about any negative effects that a regime change or anything else would have on this team which mostly displays no heart, no desire and no intelligence. I’m sure that Tannehill can continue to be disappointing with new coaches …lol

  21. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    Bat

I think we desperately need a HC that will hold players accountable, and lead them, inspire them, and also know how to manage and game plan. Not sure that exists, or isn’t already currently employed, but that’s what we need.

  22. finfanrob's avatar finfanrob says:

    bat,

i dont think gdp was comparing rodgers and tanny, at least i hope he wasnt. i think his point is even an elite qb cant win a game on his own. that has always been my bitch about the fins. they have way more problems then not having an ‘elite’ qb.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Rodgers has looked average in recent weeks. Why? Luck is out and was having a horrible season. Why? I know you know why, but it baffles me how fans don’t see how easily a top talent QB can look middle of the pack without support. You can look around the league and see many examples of it.

  23. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Bat, what exactly are Tannehill’s critical flaws? His numbers are basically the same as last year. His comp. pct. is down a bit from last year but still over 62%, his INTs are up a little bit but not crazy bad. He’s on pace to throw for more yards than last year and the same TDs at 27 and his yards per attempt are much higher than its ever been before which is why his comp. pct. may be down.

The team struggles to play complimentary football. When one side goes up the other goes down. That’s not just a QB issue, it’s a team issue. If you asked fans how about a QB who can put up numbers like this without putting a name to him, every fan would take it compared to what we’ve had in the past post Marino.
    http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/stats/_/id/14876/ryan-tannehill

So he’s not a mad bomber or a gunslinger, but his overall numbers are pretty good especially in an offense that has a habit of making itself one dimensional all too often. We all know what that’s all about. The running game starts off well early and we ditch it for some bizarre reason. It’s maddening and it creates the same results week after week.

  24. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I agree Tim – That’s what I’ve been saying. I think it’s too narrow a focus when you simply look at the QB and blame him for all of the teams shortcomings.

  25. finfanrob's avatar finfanrob says:

    tim

i agree. it has been my complaint for years now. but others want to call it as a defense of tanny. i am curious as to those who just want to say how bad he is what their answer to a qb is? 3 years ago washington thought they had an answer and a future ‘elite’ qb. it isnt like these ‘eilte’ qb’s come out every year. and even if they did one can see what happens if there isnt a team around him. just ask marino.

  26. bat's avatar bat says:

I’m not blaming Tannehill for all this teams problems. The whole organization stinks from top to bottom. Tannehill is a part of the problem, but as the QB he is a significant part of the problem.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Bat, RT’s numbers actually suggest he’s not the problem. He may not be the savior which is silly to begin with, but there are too many other players not carrying their weight. The issue could be most of them are not as good as maybe we thought they were and when you count up all the criticisms of the many different players fans have with this team, we answer the issues with this team without even realizing it.

You can’t criticize multiple OL, the lack of pass rush and run defense, the LBs and DBs and then just focus on the QB who is actually better than most of the players on this team.

Look at all the mock drafts posted and discussions about what we need to get better. It’s almost every position. It’s kind of a subliminal answer to our problems.

    Try

Let me rephrase. I don’t think it’s fair to say he’s playing to his potential NOW, when he’s played better in the past.

and that statement basically holds true for every one on the team. but lets just focus the blame on one player. that is what i just dont get. is it just easier to talk about one player? if that is so i get it? it sucks having to bitch about every player? of maybe they just point at tanny cause he is the qb and the easiest to blame, i get that too.

    • TryPod's avatar Try Pod says:

Again with focusing the blame on one player- this is not accurate. No one has ever said Tanne is the problem with this team- that would imply taking him off the team would fix everything, and I have never read that anywhere by any poster. But some like to discuss the qb issue, which is just as fair as discussing the coaching or the game plan or the ownership. But the only one who gets his own defensive team/law firm representation is Tanne. And that is the conflict here.

  28. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

FFR, people forget how Marino was stuck in mediocrity to bad for 4 straight years with a horrible roster around him. They just remember the great moments. Why were the Dolphins 8-8, 8-7, 6-10 and 8-8 between 86-89? I think we all know. That was also Marino in his 4th through 7th seasons. Did he regress? It’s silly. The team stunk and without Marino those teams were probably 4 win teams at best.

  29. finfanrob's avatar finfanrob says:

    Try Pod says:

Again with focusing the blame on one player- this is not accurate.

i disagree. this convo, or at least my comments started cause bat said how bad tanny sucks. he didnt focus on the entire team. and if you read my comment, i was seriously just asking why the comments are just about him. if it is easier to focus on him cause he is the qb and the qb gets all the attention, then i get that. it just isnt my focus, i despise this entire team, and tanny is one of them too.

  30. bat's avatar bat says:

    Tim … Tannehill’s critical flaws:

    1. Horrendous pocket presence. No feel for the pass rush. freezes up or retreats backwards. A QB with his athleticism should not be a sitting duck so often.

    2. Poor ball security in the pocket. Too often gets stripped while waving the ball around.

    3. Poor field vision. Gets stuck on his first read and misses wide open receivers. Does not scan the field well. Waits too long to check down.

    4. Worst touch passer in football. Couldn’t throw a proper fade if his life depended on it. Screen passes are usually lobbed up like a balloon or thrown like dart.

    5. Rarely hits receivers in stride. Usually behind or right on forcing receiver to stop to make the catch.

    6. No sense of urgency in critical situations. Doesn’t command the huddle and doesn’t lift the team with his play in tough moments.

    I’ll stop now I’m getting tired …lol

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I think all of the above are highly exaggerated and ignore many other factors. With everything you said, a QB with all those deficiencies should not have his numbers.

There are plenty of examples of him doing all those things well. We fans tend to just focus on a handful of bad plays and categorize him as such. Our fans tend to expect perfect play from basically every player based on comments that are made. If they don’t do everything well, they get the they suck tag and need to be replaced. It happens every week win or lose.

  31. finfanrob's avatar finfanrob says:

But the only one who gets his own defensive team/law firm representation is Tanne. And that is the conflict here.

try, now you know that isnt true. philbin had plenty of people saying it was the players for a long time, i know suh has his supporters. i think every area has its defenders. i think the reason with tanny is cause he is one person at a position. if someone is biaching about the secondary it is as a group so the defense of some arent as easy to do

  32. finfanrob's avatar finfanrob says:

    Try Pod says:
    November 28, 2015 at 12:32 pm

Bat said that- He also never said Tanne was the only problem.

come on really, he said that after my comments.

  33. bat's avatar bat says:

rob …Tannehill happened to be the topic of conversation. I can’t list every guy who also sucks every time I want to bash Tanny. If you want me to skewer other aspects of the team, just ask my opinion …lol

  34. finfanrob's avatar finfanrob says:

    bat,

ok fine you want to rip the guy, here i will list what he does excellent

    1. he has excellent taste in women.

    2. see number 1

  35. TryPod's avatar Try Pod says:

The qb is the focus of the team. It comes with the job. Everyone knows this. I know the protest is “it isn’t fair because of x, y, and z”. But the inclusion of these variables does not negate the validity of the criticisms. Again, the only one with vociferous defense is Tanne.

  36. bat's avatar bat says:

rob … I said it after your comments because most here understand that this team is riddled with flaws and that a qualifier should not be necessary every time that someone feels like bashing Tannehill.

again you state this and i dont know if you are doing it just to get a response or if you are serious. i have never ever on here seen anyone give tanny a vociferous defense. just others say there is a lot more wrong then the qb.

  40. finfanrob's avatar finfanrob says:

    bat,

i get bashing the qb is easiest and fun. it just gets really old. and when i say really old, that goes back to the fiedler days. i am sure you remember on the old board, i use to crush fiedler. i guess i got all of bashing the qb out of my system then and now just prefer to bash the entire team.

  41. bat's avatar bat says:

rob …. GDP was comparing Tanny to Rodgers. He was sarcastically trying to use Rodgers recent poor performances to minimalize Tannehill’s struggles. Rodgers has earned the benefit of the doubt with stellar play and production resulting in division titles and championships. Tannehill’s accomplishments are slightly less impressive.

    • TryPod's avatar Try Pod says:

Same thing can be said about Marino’s “struggles” (though I certainly don’t remember him ever struggling). He earned fans patience. Many don’t seem to feel Tanne has at this point, and I’d have to agree.

If that’s not accurate, then I guess I don’t get it. I don’t think we can or will be able to easily upgrade over Tannehill, even if we draft a QB in the 1st RD.

Thanks, bud! They are playing great team football right now. I really respect what coach Ferentz has done because he did a lot of self-scouting of his program this past off-season and made changes…not easy to do for a guy who’s been a HC for as long as he has…and it’s working so far. I think elite QB’s are bred from elite organizations. I think Andrew Luck this year just about proves that point. He was widely thought as the best QB prospect in decades. Well, his team didn’t get him a run game, a competent O-line or defense, and all of a sudden LUCK SUCKS. The Patriots, Steelers, NY Giants, and maybe a couple of others produce elite QB’s, because they’re great organizations.

    MikeE,
Why would it be so hard to upgrade at QB when the one we have is probably somewhere in the 12-18th best in the league? There are several young to middling QBs playing just as good or better than Tannehill.
    ***
I think we’re screwed because they already signed him to a huge, long term contract. That’s really the reason we won’t be looking to upgrade with any significant moves. So, we are stuck accepting mediocre once again with this organization. I think Matt Moore could have won just as many games as Tannehill has.

  67. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

BTW, Rodgers is a better QB than Tannehill and on a much better team until the last 4 weeks, well, the Pack are still better in their recent losses than the Phins are overall.
Anyways, I wasn’t ‘comparing’ the 2 QB’s. Just pointing out that other QB’s can really suck, look average when things aren’t going well. Gee, ya think things aren’t going well in Miami?

You clowns crack me up with your hypocrisy. You pounce on me and others if you think there is even a shred of defence of our QB, yet you yourself seem to see nothing but bad, doom & gloom. It’s comical, and for that I thank you. It adds flavor to a blog…LOL.

  68. Randy's avatar Randy says:

Luck has shown his elite qualities many times. He has carried that team since he was drafted. This year he has struggled, but he’s already shown he is a true franchise QB. Tannehill hasn’t even come close…with similar talent.

  69. finfanrob's avatar finfanrob says:

    mike,

well i agree with your opinion. i think i have been saying that all year, but when you say things like that it gets turned into you are just defending tanny. i dont think there is a qb in the league that would make the fins a playoff team, cause it is a team and the team sucks.

lol, so i have this right. if they get another qb playing just as good as tanny then that is an upgrade.

Who are these QB’s Randy? Which ones have a better W/L record and better stats than Tannehill?

yeah, i kind of got that and had your back there. but i guess that didnt matter, it was just you putting both names i the same comment that set off the fireworks

Bortles, Carr, Bridgewater, Mac Notwen, Dalton, Hoyer. I could throw a few more in too.

    • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

LMAO, nothing like reaching. I’m sure those eliteness QB’s would have this same Dolphins team leading the division right now. I’m in stitches this is so comical….lol

  74. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    MikeE,
And I thought we weren’t allowed to judge QBs on their W/L records anymore….because they have no bearing on winning and losing! Lol

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Ha! It works both ways though. You say Tannehill is only padding stats, yet where is Mariota, Luck, and what did Mac Notwen do last year? He’s finally winning, and Mac is playing better than usual, but it’s not only Mac that makes them win. Carr is playing well, but Oakland is finally building a good team, and he’s reaping the benefits of it.

  75. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Randy, Luck has shown his eliteness already so he gets a pass for playing like shit and all his INT’s???? LOL
Then based on that logic, Mark Sanchez should get a pass cause he already showed his eliteness going to 2 AFC championship games….yeah, isn’t that special…..SMH

I don’t think Tanny’s contract keeps us from drafting and / or developing a QB

Hell if one dropped to the second that we had to have. We could still swing that!

Look up the numbers…they speak for themselves.

  79. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    Wyoming,
I do think his contract is a problem. Even if they did draft a QB very high in the draft, that old saying of if you have two QBs you have none comes into play. It’s tough to bring a young QB in and give him the reps he needs to develop when you already have a QB on your roster you’re paying top dollar.

  80. finfanrob's avatar finfanrob says:

    bridgewater rat 86.6 yards 2106 td 8 int 6
    tannehill rat 8.4 yards 2640 td 17 int 10

but bridgewaters is playing significately better then tanny

  81. bat's avatar bat says:

I think it just goes to show how far this franchise has sunk that some consider a mediocre QB like Tannehill to be a virtually an irreplaceable commodity …lol

A good QB makes his team better. Has Tannehill done that? Does he make players around him better?

lmao i did, and maybe you should next time before you list a bunch of qbs with basically the same stats as the one you say they would be an upgrade over.

now i will give you dalton and newton, but they are also on great teams. the other ones just come on randy. a debate is only fun if the person on the other side has sound arguments

  84. Randy's avatar Randy says:

I said playing as good as or better. I said nothing about “significantly better”. Those are your words, not mine. You guys do this all the time with Tannehill debates. You change the conversation to an extreme and then argue that instead of what was actually said. Lol

  85. finfanrob's avatar finfanrob says:

    bat,

pretty sure no one has said he is an irreplaceable commodity …lol. but everytime i say something like that i am reminded he is the only one that gets a defense on the blog, so never mind. sign me up for the tanny must go but leave his wife behind club.

  86. Randy's avatar Randy says:

It’s tough to find good help these days. Lol

  87. finfanrob's avatar finfanrob says:

    randy,

ok. you didnt say significantly better. you said better i am not sure how someone with the same or worse stats is better.

and dont give me that crap of ‘You change the conversation to an extreme and then argue that instead of what was actually said.’ i get labeled on here over and over as a tanny defender when i clearly state he is part of the problem too. so if anything gets twisted it is me saying tanny isnt the only problem, he is one, but this team has way bigger problems then an average qb.

you pay my sister a fucking nickle then want change back. of course you cant find good help.

  89. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    MikeE,
For some reason, Tannehill is the only player we have to take into account the WHOLE organization when we evaluate his performance. No other player gets that luxury around here. Maybe it’s that the clubhouse guys are putting too much starch in his jock…or not enough! Lol

  90. bat's avatar bat says:

rob ..If that’s the case then why aren’t more on board with exploring other options. Tannehill has done nothing during his tenure here to indicate that he is anything more than ordinary. There is nothing to lose by looking elsewhere ..unless we’re worried that we’ll only win 5 games instead of 7 or 8 …lol

  91. Randy's avatar Randy says:

I stopped paying your sister long ago. Now she just cleans my bucket.

  92. finfanrob's avatar finfanrob says:

    randy,

my biggest problem with all this tanny talk. is it is cheap. it is easy and cheap just to point a finger at the obvious and this blog has always been better then that. the football minds here have always been better at pointing out the flaws of this team and not just blaming the qb.

  93. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    ffr
I know you’d not a Tanneholic….you just dabble from time to time. Lol

  94. bat's avatar bat says:

Randy … Excellent point ..Nobody wants to consider that maybe Tannehill’s issues contribute to the struggles in other areas of the offense. It’s only Tannehill that suffers from the weaknesses of those around him.

  95. finfanrob's avatar finfanrob says:

    bat,

i cant tell you why more here arent on board with it. i cant speak for anyone but myself. i would bet all on here are on board with exploring any option to get this team to be winners again. like i said, i havent read where anyone said tanny is irreplaceable.
