There’s no quick fix in sight, and we’re in salary cap hell. We’re going to have to suck for a couple of yrs, before it can be fixed. In today’s NFL every team has massive injuries, so the ones with depth or those that have great QB play can survive.

  2. New Age's avatar New Age says:

    Steve,

I really like Hue Jackson because Dalton has improved under him and he actually knows what a running play looks like. McDaniels scares me honestly. No one has really ever succeeded away from Belicheat.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Hue Jackson just isn’t innovative enough to make our O work. McDaniels is scary, but he’s a risk reward type of guy, and it would F up the Cheats a little, as I think he’s been their best OC yet.

  3. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

We really need to go to a 3-4 next yr, with the current group we’d have Suh, Phillips, and Mitchell across the front with OV and Wake at OLB and Misi and Jenkins inside. Jenkins doesn’t really fit inside, but I think he could learn to play there. The current 4-3 with minimal blitzing left us too predictable.

This would help out against the run, and short stuff. The current problem against the run is Wake and OV really aren’t very good at it with a hand in the ground, but as OLB they’d be much better.

    • New Age's avatar New Age says:

Definitely need to change things up. Worst defense in our history. Olivadotti worked hard all those years to have bad defenses and we go and Coyle him up.

I’m sure your brother-in-law knows more than I do. My two cents is there are many little tricks to holding. Yes, you can use your thumbs, but it’s not very good against good players who use their hands well to clear. You can also slip the tip of each hand up under the pads and move them around. Way back when, you had shoulder pads with big, long straps of elastic holding the front and back together…perfect spot to slip your thumb or whatever underneath…and, the nice thing was the elastic strap would move but the pads wouldn’t as much…less for the ref to see. There isn’t much guys don’t figure out to use as an advantage. Sometimes you just need jersey. You see guys now actually grabbing the edge of shoulder pads and shoving them around. They get away with a lot.
    ***
I absolutely love watching good line play. I haven’t seen much lately, unfortunately.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Thanks Randy. I really feel like good line play is a team thing. I don’t see our Oline getting blown up like Colonblow used to get beat. If the weak link is the Oline, then you have to chip the ends, leave both TEs in to block, and get rid of the ball quick.

Last Sunday SD had very little pressure early, then stepped it up a bit later, after some injuries, and we stopped running. RT needs to get rid of the ball faster, if it’s not there throw it away.

  8. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    steve
Yeah, really good OLs take years to gel, but that’s just not even an option in today’s NFL. We’ve had far too much turnover and injury to have any cohesiveness. But, the problem is that when you step on the field there are no excuses. The defense is just gonna kick your ass and laugh about it all game long. Nobody cares….meanwhile young, inexperienced guys who were never ready in the first place get to find out just how big their sack truly is.
    ***
I would say while the fan base rips them to shreds while screaming for a 5th year for their beloved QB to finally become…..Trent Dilfer? But, I won’t. Lol

  9. olddolphan's avatar olddolphan says:

DID a quick scan of some of today’s posts. Did NOT SEE “Replacing Owner” and/or “Replacing Tannenbaum” as being our top priorities for the off-season.. BUT BELIEVE ME, if the “DOOFUS BRIGADE” is brought back, the players selected to fill the many holes on this team WILL BE WORSE than the players we get rid of!!! — Now that doesn’t mean we should keep our vast array of under talented or under performing players. In fact, WE NEED TO UPGRADE THEM!! – – But we can NOT upgrade our personnel IF T-BAUM’S DOING THE PICKING OR HAS THE FINAL SAY IN SUCH MATTERS!!
    —————-
TANNENBAUM went on the biggest off-season spending spree in the history of the Miami Dolphins. The result?? An 8-8 team DECLINED to either a 7-9 team or a 6-10 with VERY LITTLE CAP SPACE as of this writing! If THAT’s not a fireable offense, what is??? —Do the Fins have to go 1-15 again?? –Is STEVE ROSS REALLY THAT STUPID when it comes to FOOTBALL DECISIONS?? wELL, FOLKS, i CONTEND THAT A RECORD 7 STRAIGHT NON-WINNING SEASONS ANSWERS THAT QUESTION!! –ROSS, THE COMMANDER-IN-CHIEF OF THE “DOOFUS BRIGADE,” REALLY IS THAT STUPID, FOOTBALL-WISE!!
    ————–
ANY discussion about what moves to make during the off-season begins and ends with the “DOOFUS BRIGADE!” If they all return, MIAMI CAN NOT improve and make it to the playoffs.–If they DON’T RETURN, IMPROVEMENTS ARE POSSIBLE, but NOT GUARANTEED. –mORE PRECISELY, IF WE KEEP, OR TRADE AWAY, RYAN TANNEHILL, we’ll get worse if the “Brigade” is back. If we keep or replace the O-Line, Suh, Miller, etc., etc.,we’ll get worse if the “Brigade” is back. As soon as more of you guys begin to realize this, the sooner we can talk about upgrading our favorite team in a meaningful way. So the FIRST ORDER OF BUSINESS has to be firing T-Baum immediately!! Then Ross can go to the Bill Polians of the world and get some ideas about WHO should be our next head coach and WHO should be our next GM. THAT’S where the process begins!!

  10. ocalahowie's avatar ocalahowie says:

If this where Basketball I might consider it but I’m leaning towards Michelle Tafoya in this league

  12. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

OD, so how do you really feel about Ross & Mike Tannenbaum and what would you like to see happen to them?

    • olddolphan's avatar olddolphan says:

It’s Christmas tomorrow. So I’ll refrain from answering your very good question. But, in the words of Clubber Lang, “Prediction??–PAIN!!”

  13. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Thanks OD. I really hope Ross finally makes the right changes, studies what makes other franchises great, like the Steelers.

  15. TryPod's avatar Try Pod says:

    Tim,
I was waiting for someone to ask me who John Smith was- he’s no one and everyone; he’s John Doe… Ross brought in Sparano, who was nobody, then he brings in Philbin, another nobody. My point is he’s likely to get someone of no name, as is his record.

    • herdfan's avatar herdfan says:

Ross didn’t bring in Sparano. Sparano came here with Parcells when H. Wayne Huizenga was the owner. Ross kept him, I think it was after the 11-5 season…who wouldn’t have kept him after that season?

  16. Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

    DOOFUS BRIGADE is CORRECT
    MERRY CHRISTMAS
    EVERYONE 🙂

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

It’s all BS. Everyone knows what happens when your body takes that kind of a pounding. Why do you think some guys are afraid to go over the middle? Anyone that tells you otherwise is a tard or full of shit.

With that said a high percent of players would’ve still played the game, and played it the same way. I compare this to asking guys that took PEDs would they have done anything different, if they knew the affects of taking them, over and over they said no.

HERDFAN: GOOD LUCK to your Marshall team in the St. Petersburg Bowl tomorrow. It’s being played at Tropicana Field, home of the Rays. The usual 5,000 or so fans are expected for a sporting event at the “TROP.”
    ————–
Regarding ROSS and SPARANO: Tony had success his first year ONLY BECAUSE CHAD PENNINGTON, unexpectedly fell into Miami’s arms when the Jets cut him loose to sign Bret Favre. PLUS, I BELIEVE, THAT was the season Brady was knocked out for the year in the first game, giving the Fins a chance to win the AFC East. As bad year followed bad year, ROSS decided to stick with Sparano to the detriment of the franchise. When Sparano started one season 0-7, EVERYONE CALLED FOR HIS FIRING!! –Ross’s response was to GIVE SPARANO AN EXTENSION (mind-boggling stupidity) and to tell the press “Tony’s the best man to lead the Dolphins into the future!” A few games later, Ross fired Sparano after yet another lopsided loss! –But the damage had been done. Those extra losing seasons that Ross permitted Sparano to coach the team set this francghise on a downward spiral it has yet to recover from!!–AND ROSS DOES NOT GET A “FREE PASS” from me or anybody else because HE WAS THE PERSON who kept Sparano around after it became obvious that he was UNFIT to be a head coach in the NFL.–Sparano’s later tenure as HC at Oakland proved that he was a head coaching failure of the first order. ROSS would subsequently botch the hiring of Jim Harbaugh. Then, he EXTENDED IRELAND’s tenure as GM. Then, he told TODD BOWLES that he had failed his HC interview with Miami so that he could hire Jeff Fisher. Well, when Fisher learned he’d have to take orders from IRELAND, he turned down Ross’s offer to be head coach!! –So, Ross had been spurned by TWO potential head coaches, Harbaugh and Fisher!!–Left with no other known options, Ross signed Philbin, a man who did NOT even call his own plays as OC of the Packers!! –I think its fair to say that either Harbaugh or Fisher would have done better than “CLUELESS JOE!” –Eventually, both Ireland and Philbin were cast aside several YEARS after their incompetency was no longer in doubt. –SOOO-O-O, Ross hired Tannenbaum to clean up this mess of a franchise. Predictably, T-Baum, who’d just been FIRED for messing-up the Jets’ franchise, came to Miami AND MESSED-UP ROSS’S MIAMI FRANCHISE TOO!!!! – – Well, duhhhh!!! – – The DOOFUS BRIGADE ERA WAS, AND IS, IN FULL SWING!!! –And King Carl Peterson, one of Ross’s top advisors, STILL HAS A JOB!! – – unbelievable!!

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

They aren’t bad, that’s what’s so puzzling. Ireland started it and it’s still going on, we just have a collection of guys, some very good, some average. They just don’t seem to know how to put things together and become a team. Send me to Miami, I’ll watch tape, talk to every player, and figure it out.

Last yr in the NBA, two teams took a step up, because they were efficient (Atl and Hou). Atlanta did it as a result of getting the Spurs assistant coach as coach, and Houston did it by figuring out that by taking a large amount of 3s (with a good %) and not taking the long 2s.

San Antonio has been efficient for yrs, as has Utah.

  39. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Ja’Wuan James doubtful for Sunday. Keeping Fox on the field enhances our chances for a better draft pick. Luck is out as well, but Hasselbeck should be playing. I’d just shelve James for the next 2 games. I don’t see how anything is gained by him playing either of the last 2 games.

  44. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    Tim

Did the usual, movie and Japanese Hibachi. Star Wars was great. Yeah, I know you don’t care. lol

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Glad you enjoyed Star Wars. I have nothing against anyone being into it, it’s just not my thing. It’s broken all kinds of records the first week.

I see some of the discussions have gone back to Parcells. We’re a bit past that. I don’t think anyone saw this team being 5-9 this year and there isn’t much personnel left from his tenure and not many coaches except for Campbell. Whatever we do from here on out, we need to get the right HC.

  45. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    Tim

I think the discussion got back to Parcells because OD had mentioned Ross brought in Ireland and Sparano, and Herd rightfully corrected it. I think that’s where it originated

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Okay gotcha! Ross has really only been an active owner since 2010 into the 2011 offseason where he he messed up with the whole Harbaugh thing. Other than that he’s only hired one ‘new’ HC in Philbin and he’s been fired which is what many hear wanted so what’s the problem? LOL

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I agree Ross hasn’t done us any favors, but we also haven’t had any 1-15 seasons either, and have been somewhat competitive on the field week to week.

  46. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

Your score is: 8660 (GRADE: A+)

    Your Picks:
Round 1 Pick 14 (IND): Jalen Ramsey, CB/FS, Florida State (A+)

    Wyo

Are the Kentrell brothers twins? lol

Is that why you got an A+, kind of a 2 for 1?

  48. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Mike E, but Parcells started here 8 years ago, not 15. We were in the playoffs 15 years ago. Those teams are long gone. I don’t see that as part of the problem today. This season was very disappointing on so many levels. We need to bring in a really good HC and staff to clean this crap up.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I was just making the point that it’s been a long time since this team has been a good team, so people are frustrated and looking for someone to blame.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Focus on solutions, the blame game has already been taken care of with the firing of the HC, DC and OC. Ross isn’t selling and I’m not sold on Mr. T and Hickey being the problem, they’ve only been here one and two seasons respectively. They had to clean up some messes from the prior years. Now this season isn’t a good notch in their belts for sure, but we’ve opened up opportunities for a new coaching staff. Let’s hope we get it right and then upgrade some of the personnel. We have some players to work with but we need to improve in some areas.

It might be hard to imagine right now, but I would not be surprised if we turned it around next year if a few things go our way.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Tim, under what possible circumstance could we possibly turn it around next yr?

    rgs

I’m pretty nostalgic, so I just love seeing the old characters again, and even the Millennium Falcon. Rey is a great character. My kids and I are still discussing/theorizing who she’s related to. It’s great!

    • rgs322's avatar rgs322 says:

Oh, I’m all about the OT. To this day I still have those 3 movies as my all- time favs. …Followed by Raiders of the Lost Ark and Jaws.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I really liked Raiders when I saw it, but for some odd reason, I’ve never had a desire to see it again. Jaws on the other hand is a movie I can watch any time.

  51. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Players who will be back next yr, that are either serviceable or key players, those unlikely to make the cut aren’t included:
    Ryan Tannehill
    Jay Ajayi
    Jarvis Landry
    DeVante Parker
    Kenny Stills
    Jordan Cameron
    Dion Sims
    Mike Pouncey
    Jamil Douglas
    Dallas Thomas
    Billy Turner
    Branden Albert
    Ja’Wuan James
    Jason Fox

At least 10 more guys need to be included, maybe Miller and Matthews, I’d like to keep both.

    Terrence Fede
    Dion Jordan
    Cameron Wake
    Earl Mitchell
    Jordan Phillips
    Ndamukong Suh
    Neville Hewitt
    Jelani Jenkins
    Koa Misi
    Brent Grimes
    Tony Lippett
    Bobby McCain
    Brice McCain
    Reshad Jones
    Walt Aikens
    Michael Thomas

At least 8 more on the D, maybe and hoping OV, and Shelby, and not sure about Wake and Dion Jordan.

This post is in response to Tim saying he could see us turning it around next yr. After putting these names in, I agree with him. We’ve got enough talent to compete, we just need to get the coach and schemes right.

The biggest loss we had all yr was losing Delmas, his replacements sucked.

  52. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Steve, if we were totally void of talent I wouldn’t say we can turn around next year but we do have some good players to work with. We need a coaching staff with some more experience who understand down and distance on offense and what plays to run. What we did the last few years on offense really made no sense. Just absurd play calling putting ourselves in bad situations.

Now on defense, I don’t think it was the system, we play the same 4-3 many other teams do. The problem was our DL was very inconsistent from very good to bad, but we had sub par LB and secondary play all season. It only takes a handful of upgrades to chance things. I’m not saying it’s going to happen, but I believe it can. We’ll see.

Our LBs sucked all yr (so Jones had to play so close to the line), and the scheme seemed to allow other teams to run guys into our soft zone and sit down wide open. When Taylor was on the field our DBs sucked, and Thomas and Aikens were bad too, but both are young and may be fixable (at least as depth), Taylor however I don’t see as fixable, unless they move him to safety, which I think would benefit him, because he can tackle and can cover for a safety.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

What we were void of was a clue (no one on the coaching staff had a clue what to do on either side of the ball).

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

On offense we have to get the OL settled. We haven’t been able to do that with all the youth we have and keeping guys on the field together like Albert and James. Even Pouncey is banged up now.

After that we need to run a pro scheme that focuses on our talents rather than just having an open book of plays that are absurd like all those bubble screens that go for 5 yards or less, running stretch plays out of shotgun on 3rd and 6th or after rushing for 8 yards on 1st down from under center, we go right back to shotgun on 2nd and 2 and throw a fuckin bubble screen. Run it again, WTF are they thinking there? We can’t get 2 yards on the ground after 8? SMH

On defense we have to figure out what’s happening at DE and if we stick with a 4-3 or 3-4. That will depend on who the HC is. Coples will be released, he’s due over $7M in salary next year. We’re not paying him that. We could get him back but I don’t think he’s a key to improving on defense anyway. Not at this time.

We need to add a stud LB and we’ll have a shot in the 1st rd, and better competition at both corner and safety. We need at least 3 guys to step up back there. Jones is our best back end player for sure.

Do that along with some guys having their best seasons and we can be a playoff team in 2016. But even though it’s not the easiest thing to do, it’s not impossible either. It really isn’t.

  53. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

If did end up with a 3-4 DC this would be how it starts not counting Vernon as a UFA.
    SOLB D. Moore/McCain/Jordan
    LDE Suh
    NT Phillips/Mitchell
    RDE Fede
    WOLB D. Moore/McCain/Jordan

    ILB Misi/Vigil
    ILB Jenkins

Hewitt isn’t a great 3-4 fit unless he can get a little bigger or he’ll only be a STs guy and backup.

We’d still need to target a quality ILB, an edge pass rusher and another stout DE. D. Moore is 6-5 250, he’s more of a 3-4 OLB than 4-3 DE. Those 250 guys get pushed around as 4-3 DEs, but as 3-4 OLBs they can be a handful. D. Moore the former Giants 3rd rd pick in 2013 at just 23 years old may have his best football ahead of him and he’s cheap at $700K in 2016. That’s a nothing to lose option.

mike e & others: SOMEONE UP THE PAGE quoted me as saying Ross “brought in Parcells, Sparano and Ireland!” I think that’s a mis-quote!!! –I believe I said Ross chose to RETAIN Parcells, Sparano and Ireland” —WHICH IS ABSOLUTELY TRUE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    —————–
FROM the day Ross took over, he ALWAYS HAD THE OPTION OF FIRING/NOT RETAINING ANY AND ALL MEMBERS OF THE TRIFECTA. BUT ROSS CHOSE TO KEEP THAM ALL!!–SO HE—NOT HUIZENGA–NOT ANYBODY ELSE, IS RESPONSIBLE for their collective continued employment and he’s responsible for the EXTENSIONS GIVEN to Sparano and Ireland!!
    —————
ANY ATTEMPT to gloss over or forgive ROSS for the egregious errors and mistakes of the TRIFECTA during Ross’s ownership is way off the mark in my opinion. ROSS IS THE WORST OWNER IN FINS HISTORY BY QUITE A MARGIN.
    ————–
ALSO: SOMEONE up the page said they were NOT convinced Tannenbaum was “part of the problem.” Well, let’s take a look at THIS SEASON! Highest amount of money in DOLPHINS HISTORY was spent on free agents and/or re-signing veterans. T-Baum personally approved of acquiring SUH, STILLS, JENNINGS, and several other additions to the team.. He also approved NOT upgrading the O-Line with either an early round pick OR a high profile free agent. –RESULTS??? Dolphins spent RECORD AMOUNTS on long term contracts and their record FELL FROM 8-8 to, in my view, either 6-10 or 5-11 (if we lose the last 2 games).
    ———-
I’d say T-BAUM IS part of the problem–a BIG PART!! And he’s left us in salary cap hell, just as he left the JETS in salary cap hell when they FIRED HIM TWO YEARS AGO!!!

    • herdfan's avatar herdfan says:

Just to correct the record, I think it was Trypod who said that about Ross bringing in Sparano.

      • olddolphan's avatar olddolphan says:

THANK YOU, HERD!! You are exactly right, as usual! I have NEVER SAID “Ross brought in the Trifecta.” But I HAVE SAID it’s Ross’s fault he gave EXTENSIONS to both Sparano & Ireland AFTER both had proven they were incompetent!–There’s a HUGE difference, I believe!
        ———-
GOOD LUCK to your Marshall team today in the “St. Petersburg Bowl!”

I officially nominate this as the Best Post of 2015.

  57. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

OD, we’re not in cap hell. Lots of contracts will come off the books in 2016 and we have a bunch of low level young salaries on the roster. The draft doesn’t kill the cap anymore because it’s allocated. We may not be big players in FA but we shouldn’t be anyway. Draft well, coach well, play well and we could be on our way to a solid season in 2016.

    • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

…but SunBaked Stadium will need more TP for OD in case Ross continues to feed the season ticket holders more crap sandwiches.

I’m so tired of being sub .500. I feel like a Browns fan who finally went 7-9 avoiding another double digit losing season amongst decades of them. My guess is we’ll end up 6-10 this year anyways.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

To me it really doesn’t matter how we finish this season. It’s been a bad year regardless of 5-11 to 7-9. I’d guess 6-10. We should win one of two at home. Likely tomorrow.

    • TryPod's avatar Try Pod says:

Conversely, draft poorly, coach poorly, play poorly and we could be on our way to a mediocre to poor season; based on our history, which is more likely to happen?

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Way to think positively! It’s easy to say what you just said being that’s where we currently are. LOL

Some of us are trying to look forward with a solution. 🙂

  58. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Hasselbeck is said to be starting sunday, so we could very well end up 5-11 in a FUGLY 2015 season to forget!

  59. TryPod's avatar Try Pod says:

I was the one who incorrectly attributed Sparano to Ross. I was wrong- as old dude said, I should have said Ross was responsible for Sparano when he chose not to fire him. Of course, none of this is worth blowing a fucking gasket over, but as Tim points out, some people are prone to overreaction.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I guess it’s because I hear it on sports radio all day. Just keep going up the ladder when things don’t go right. It’s usually the personnel first than the coaching. Not the owner or management most of the time. yes sometimes the ownership is cheap and the personnel dept. is inept. I don’t think that’s the case here. But we’ll all be watching this offseason and next season. LOL

lol at a new owner talk. what would you want the new owner to do. hmmmm, my guess is spend money on the team and hire football minds to run the team. what a shock, same shit ross does. sorry if it isnt the football minds you guys think he should hire.

there are way worse owners in sports, careful what you wish for.

  72. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I saw the movie concussion today, it’s pretty good. It exposes the NFL to a degree, as to the bullies they really are. I’m ok with the concussion thingy taking them down, but in all fairness, if you didn’t know these things could happen to you by playing football you’re an idiot.

The thing is most that play/played the game are from poor families, so to be able to live the life of an NFL player is worth a shorter life, as evidenced by those that had issues from steroids.

  73. finfanrob's avatar finfanrob says:

    steve,

i never said to hold him blameless. but he is doing what any fan wants as an owner. he is spending money and trying to hire the right people. does he keep getting it wrong, yes. and for that he is to blame, but as an owner there isnt much more he can do.

  74. son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:
