Game Day – Colts @ Dolphins

Capture

I hope everyone had a great Christmas and had lots of good times with friends and family.  Or at least had some good liquor to get through it.  If the latter is the case I hope you’ve still got some at hand.  It’s game day and usually that calls for some heavy drinking to numb the senses to watch as the Dolphins play their brand of football.

Let’s Go Dolphins.

Whoa, this isn’t what I signed up for or wanted!

Must be really bad. I can’t see it at work which is normal, but I can’t on my phone either.

Never doubted your football knowledge or acumen, just your ability to digest what a QB was seeing on any given play, and what his receivers were doing too by watching a game on TV. That’s why there’s coaches film, so they can look at all those things together. You’re gonna get butt-hurt, I’m sorry for that, but I don’t think it’s possible to be as sure as you make it seem. I’ll tell you right now I’m no expert, never claimed to be, and never will. I’d bet you know more about football than I ever will, but just because I write Ask Mike, doesn’t mean I’m professing to know more than I do, it’s always just been my opinion, right or wrong.

  4. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Herd, was a pic of Mancampbell with his hands on his hips and upper body tilted to one side and looking at the field with a bewildered look on his face.

Sorry, no porn or misuses of pickle jars. 😉

Are you going to be a little more lenient with people returning books to the library with all that snow?

    Mike,

No, the kids are off of school this week, they can walk through the snow and return the books!

  7. D's avatar D says:

Mike im not saying on every play i can see it, you are right there are times you can but there are certaily times you can and on those plays i have see times when Tanny did all those things i have accused him of. What i was saying was more about the fact, im not jumping to a conclusion, im seeing what im seeing. You can tell me if you want to i dont see it, but i have 0 reason to lie about it, i have 0 reason to make the QB of my team out to be less than what he is, im just not blindly making him out to be more than he is. How am i wrong for that and why do you feel the need to tell me i cant possibly see what i say i do, just because you dont want those things said about him…..

  8. D's avatar D says:

Sorry to get butt hurt about being called a liar but that’s just how I roll

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Well, I’m not calling you a liar, just stating I disagree with what accuracy you can make those judgements by watching a game on TV. I know I watch every game on TV, on a big screen, and its difficult to see both the QB and the receivers and be able to digest what the QB saw, and what he decided to do.

BTW – You can have my spot on Thursdays if you want to write an article. It would be my pleasure to let you take it.

    Quick straw poll:

Last week I observed the OL was just about the worst I’d ever seen it play, and many here agreed. Was the OL worse against the Chargers…or the Colts?

Yeah, I’m hinting at a really serious problem here that we have not been able to address in about a decade, and it only resides in the offensive backfield AFTER the ball is snapped!

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I’ll have to refer to you because I bailed in the SD game at 16-0 because I knew what was coming and didn’t want to watch it anymore.

One more thing I’ve noticed about this offensive system is that the route combinations are not complimentary at all. I.e. two receivers running in the same area, etc. I see other teams run routes that get their guys WIDE OPEN (at least against us) I mean NO ONE within 10 yards of them. Our route combinations seem to condense the field on our receivers by drawing the DB’s to the same area instead of spreading them out.

  23. D's avatar D says:

Mike, the Ask Mike articles are great, wasn’t trying to diminish your contributions.

My point with that comment is, you often present your answers as points of facts, facts that i assume, or give credit to you having done research on to support your statements. What i was getting at is you spoke to me about my statements of facts, facts i come by by researching things. You treat these facts there was no truth or research behind them, you gave me no credit for what i see, when your articles are predicated on people doing that for you. I know people dont always agree with your answers, i dont expect them to mine, but they dont tell you, there is no way you can be right here, none, you cant answer that question, you cant see what your saying you are seeing.

I was trying to show you how your actions are in general very hypocritical and quite frankly makes me not want to read anything you post, since you cant in return give the same respect back.

Since we are going to be in the top ten………seems there will be less to concentrate at least. And heck……we could even get to #3 with the greatest upset weekend of all time. That would really cut down on research time.

    • D's avatar D says:

Whats the point with that, obviously no matter what you see in those players game film, its impossible for you to have any ability to spot talent. You have 0 ability Randy to tell if a OL has good footwork a strong punch, or good technique off the snap. If you dont believe me ask some of these other guys, they will be quick to tell ya.

You’re not lying, and it’s possible you can do those things. In my opinion, it’s impossible to do what you say you do accurately without coaches film. 32. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I don’t think any team trades for Sean Payton. If the Saints are wiling to trade him then they’re looking to move on from him and they don’t want him as their HC. That’s a hard sell for them.
Hey Sean, we tried to trade you but we got no takers so we hope you know we believe in you as our HC. The trade usually happens when the coach wants out and the team isn’t exactly on board with that, not the other way around.

Sean Payton brigade, you might be in luck. I wouldn’t trade a damn thing for him for a few reasons, but #1 is that there’s no need to.
He’s had a fallen out with the Benton ownership & meddling granddaughters etc.
He won’t be staying, so they’re not gonna fool anyone by expecting & getting a early draft round pick or two…IMHO.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

I’ve never said our OL is good. I just think people overlook how terrible Tannehill’s pocket presence is and how that negatively affects the OL and their sack numbers. Couple that with his plodding way of reading defenses(or doesn’t), and the guy doesn’t help his OL at all. They don’t help him either, but it’s not just a one way street. Tannehill is part of the reason why he gets sacked so often. I take issue with people who claim that isn’t the case and just blame the OL. Protection is a TEAM effort.

i think the only part of your post that is questionable is when you said you go back and re-watch the games. there is no way possible any human would subject themselves to that kind of punishment.

  45. Randy's avatar Randy says:

Question: Tannehill said the incompletion he threw to Parker…not the one where his arm was hit but the other one….he threw it low and outside to give his receiver a chance. My question is why the hell is he throwing a “low and outside” pass to Parker in the end zone in the first place? Throw a high point fade, so he can use his height and leaping ability to make a play. I don’t get that play call OR execution at all….unless the coaches have 0 faith in Tanny’s ability to throw a fade. And, if that’s the case….our offense will a,ways be limited in the red zone….and makes it much easier to defend us. Bad playcalling/design….or a limited QB who can’t make the throws needed? I ask because this is the sort of thing I mean when I constantly say we leave points on the field.

  46. Randy's avatar Randy says:

  47. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

“unless the coaches have 0 faith in Tanny’s ability to throw a fade.” I think this is the case! I have yet in 4 years to see Tannehill throw a good fade pass. That was actually one of the things my boss wanted to talk about during our “trash Tannehill” session. LOL

  48. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Top of my re-sign list is Cameron. And I know he is not technically a FA, but his 2016 salary for $7.5 mil was just an “in case he goes All-Pro” thing. No one will pay that, and we helped make sure of that based on how we used and did not use him….and yeah that includes Tanny in there.

Like what he brings to the O and how he plays.

    • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Cameron is an asset and a new competent OC will find best how to use him.
I love the fact he’s got a full year concussion free now. He’s got some good years ahead of him now.

    • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

You and i are i think in a minority here as well. Completely agree. Cameron has had a lot of plays where he got open and he is certainly one of those guys i think is a game changer for us, utilized properly. Also there are 0 potential replacement candidates out there that would be an upgrade, not in the draft, not in FA.

That said, i do really like the TE out of Arkansas, Hunter Henry. He is pretty athletically gifted, and reminds me a lot of Witten, as he is also very football smart.

He’s one of my suggestions for a later round find to replace Matt Moore.

      • D's avatar D says:

He would be a good backup for sure but I’d really like a guy who would also threaten Tanny a little push him some

      • D's avatar D says:

Being gamer though he might be able to do that. He’s a solid late round possibly udfa option. I think he is still flying significantly under the radar at this point.

  53. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Cameron has had a lot of plays where he got open and he is certainly one of those guys i think is a game changer for us,

He was also one of those guys who dropped EXCELLENT passes right in his hands at critical times this year and could not get open on other occasions. He HAS been a game changer for us. changed an easy first down to a punt several times. Agree to disagree.

    • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Everybody’s made mental mistakes cause the damn scheme/system/play calling is so out of kilter that it puts players into bad positions, confuses them, has them thinking too much, & becoming accustomed to something going wrong or feeling like they need to do too much, like score everytime they get a whiff of a ball coming their way.

Oh and i know a lot still swoon over Gruden, but hiring him might actually be the last straw for me lol. I dont know if i could suffer through his press conferences. I also think he was more of a product of inheriting a ready made team than he was successful as a coach.

Oh and i know a lot still swoon over Gruden, but hiring him might actually be the last straw for me lol. I dont know if i could suffer through his press conferences. I also think he was more of a product of inheriting a ready made team than he was successful as a coach.

DITTO. i hate the liar. if somehow they hired him i would pull for them to lose every game he is the coach.

saying grimes is the best CB on the phins doesn’t mean anything. Our secondary is historically bad right now.

it is what idiots say. for that matter tanny is the best qb the phins have. he was just being his normal troll self

    D,

I like your posts. The only thing for me that hurts your credibility is your name…”D”. The Dolphins haven’t had a credible “D” in years.

that is cause he saves the rest of his letters for his novel sized post

Boulder, I’d like to see Phins dump Grimes and his organ grinder sidewalk act.
Then go for CB Janoris Jenkins in FA, he’ll come cheaper than Josh Norman whom everybody will be fixated on.
Then draft a stud CB in 1st if he’s BPA when we pick, or in the 2nd or 3rd round.

Then I’d sign FA LT Cordy Glenn away from the Bills, he’s 26. I’d try to work a trade for Albert if I could, or eventually cut him.

Then draft a BPA LB or DE in the 1st 3 rounds like I mentioned for CB.

So first 3 picks after those FA moves would be BPA of CB, LB, DE.

Dump Grimes, Dump Wake, +15mil, Sign Alex Boone -6mil, Glenn -12mil would be nice but definitely would have to trade/cut Albert +5mil if we were going to swing it. Might be able to squeeze in Michael Wilhoite as well. Could double up on the OG’s in FA as well, or let Turner, Thomas, Douglas battle for last spot and cut third place guy.

    • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Sounds good to me. Cordy Glenn @ that price would be like fining a TOP LT in the draft that took a couple years to round into form. He’s 26 & a 6yr deal would make him an anchor for a long while.
Boone’s gonna cost a lot for a OG, I have a few cheaper options in mind if money gets tight.
I like Wilhoite too, & Danny Travathan.

I figure Boone is going to be 6-7mil a year kinda thing and then Aponte can work her cap voodoo and shift it around so we can afford him. I think he in particular would go a LONG way towards helping our offense.

I also think we have a few more cuts that could be made.
Misi (im half in and half out of this argument)
Taylor (though dont save a ton there)
        Fox
Jordan (just have no belief that he turns things around)
        Jennings
Mitchell (is debatable, thoughi think at what we save cutting him, he is more valuable than those savings)

  80. Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

    D,
My guess is by the time the draft rolls around, Hackenberg goes in the 2nd, no later than the 3rd.

    • D's avatar D says:

You are probably right, i think a lot of the smaller school QB also fall some by that time, either way i think we could find ourselves with a shot at someone who will push Tanny a little and be at very minimum a solid backup for us. What i see in him seems promising.

      • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

With the right tutelage I think he can play well in the NFL. I wouldn’t mind grabbing Nassib either.

      • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

Houston may grab him in the 2nd if he’s around when they pick. He played very well in O’Brien’s system.

  81. D's avatar D says:

That draft i got above wasnt too bad, arguable that some of those players would really fall that low, but im just working with the rules of that system. I only had one trade back in the third to get those extra picks.

  82. Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

It’s troubling that we crumble down the stretch no matter who the coach is, and what his coaching style is. I was thinking that Campbell’s fiery style compared to Philbins aww shucks style make no difference whatsoever.

  83. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

D I’ve watch some Indiana games and film looking at Spriggs.

He’s not bad. Nothing special though!

If you get him as an UDFA that would be great!
But he will probably go in the 6th or 7th?

  84. New Age's avatar New Age says:

    Brian ,

Style really means nothing. The best coaches train their players to succeed. Belichick has assignments for his players so they research their opponents. Bowles asks them questions about what they are supposed to do week by week. Arians changed his system to fit Palmer. http://mmqb.si.com/2013/12/18/bruce-arians-arizona-cardinals-nfl

We are asking the position coaches to fix a crappy system they were a part of. It’s just not happening. Top coaching will get this team back on track. Or we will keep seeing the same garbage.

  86. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Brian, Campbell basically had to inherit everything including coaches to keep the team ready to play. He never had a chance to start fresh, instill his message to the players and install his systems with his own coaches. Very hard to take over in-season and turn around a broken team.

  87. Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

I understand all of that guys, I just find it interesting that the complaints here the last few years were “Philbin can’t motivate his guys to finish the season strong” and the same thing is happening with Campbell.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I never really bought into the motivate players to finish strong thing. I mean with the playoffs on the line a player needs to be motivated. Prepared yes, but motivated? I think it was more about not be good enough than being motivated. And we surely aren’t good this year.
