What Hulk Think – Head Coaches

hulk-computer (1)

By Dr. Bruce Banner

So Hulk watch another disappointing loss and Hulk not even get angry. Hulk just sit there and think what can Hulk write about this week? Another poor job by offensive line. Another poor job of watching defense let opposing team convert 3rd and long after and 3rd and long. Another piece about whether Tannehill is good or bad? Hulk say enough of all this. Hulk want to start looking to the future so Hulk write about 5 possible head coaching candidates and whether or not they good fit for this failing team.

So before Hulk think about head coaches for next year Hulk think what criteria or credentials should the coaching candidates have before team consider hiring them. This is what Hulk think: Whoever the next head coach is must be somebody that has track record of working and developing young QBs. Hulk say regardless of whether or not you believe Tannehill is the quarterback of the future or if the Phins should draft a guy like Lynch, Goff or Cook we are going to need someone who can work with and develop a young quarterback. However, whoever the next head coach is must also be somebody that has skill and knowledge in building a defense. I know this sound like polar opposite but when you look at team there will be almost complete rebuild of defense. On the line Vernon is likely gone. Wake is aging and coming back from major injury. There needs to be a serious infusion of talent at linebacker and we only have one defense back that is any good. With this in mind Hulk look at some names being mentioned for head coach.

Hue Jackson: He has an excellent track record with quarterbacks. He salvaged Carson Palmer’s career when he traded for him as head coach of the Raiders. He now turn around career of Andy Dalton who after last season many Bengal fans were ready to run out of town. Dalton have fine year and now Bengal fans be worried that he no be healthy for playoffs. Oh, the irony. Yes, Hulk like irony. However, there are drawbacks. Jackson have no real defensive experience. He will have to rely on a good defensive coordinator hire. He had only 1 year of head coaching experience with Raiders and did alright taking the team to an 8-8 finish and then was summarily fired by old Al Davis who may or may not have been dead by that time.

Darrell Bevell: He too has done excellent job in developing a young quarterback in Russell Wilson. He has taken Wilson from game manager to game breaker. You can see his development this year given all the injuries to Seahawk running backs. Wilson is now focus of offense and he now on fire as team heads into playoffs. Hulk like being on fire. Bevell also know how to run ball, especially with power back. He would be good fit with Ajayai. But there are drawbacks with Bevell as well. He would be 1st time head coach and there will be a learning curve. He too no really have any experience in running a defense except for seeing a good one every day in practice. Also there was horrible play call at end of Superbowl. How much that have Bevell’s fingerprints on it Hulk no know but it smacks of a Lazor play call being too cute when no have to be.

Chuck Pagano: He likely not back as Colts head coach. He has developed young quarterback in Andrew Luck and made Colts instant playoff team. He also is former defensive coordinator and certainly no stranger to building a defense. So what not to like? Well there is fact that he no get along with dysfunctional owner and front office. Many accuse Miami having dysfunctional owner and front office. Not sure Pagano will be good fit with current front office structure. Also, Pagano’s Colts have struggled mightily against Pats, especially in playoffs.

Mike Smith: He too like Pagano has developed a young quarterback who has turned franchise into instant playoff team. He too like Pagano was a former defensive coordinator and no stranger to building a defense. So again what not to like? Well there is Smith’s playoff record which is full of one and dones in the playoffs. He also went from a head coach who built a balance offense to a head coach who came to rely too heavily on passing game by end of his tenure in Atlanta. Also for being such a good defense mind he never really turned Falcons into good defense team. Falcons won because of offense with defense being constant problem.

Josh McDaniels: He is considered offensive guru. He coach under the almighty Bill Billecheat. He coach Tom Brady. He has coached a team to playoffs including beating good Steelers team in playoffs. He is supposedly on everyone’s short list for head coaching candidates and will be able to pick and choose where he want to go. So what not to like? Well for such an offensive guru he invested a 1st round draft choice in some guy named Tebow. This make Hulk think he no know his backside from his elbow about quarterbacks. He also have stink of Patriots on him. He too like Pagano had stormy relationship with front office and owner and may not be good fit for current structure of Miami front office.

Hulk know there are and will be other names for head coaching candidates such as Sean Payton and John Harbaugh. Hulk did not consider them as Hulk think they unlikely to be Phin’s coach next year. But Hulk sure there are many other names out there that are likely to be considered but Hulk think the 5 listed above are the most likely candidates. What you guys think?

Post Script (Yes Hulk know fancy literary term): Breaking news from Philadelphia; Hulk now know what would make him angry – Hiring this guy:

I don’t get into the coaching search too much!
Just pick one and we will try it out for 3 years then flush everything again!

But everyone wanting to Flush Hickey has got me puzzled?

His drafts have been pretty good as far as I can see! Anyone disagree?
He finally gets to pick his HC and have a say in the OC and DC.

Let’s see what brand of football he comes up with!

What the fuck is 3 more years anyway?

  2. Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

As far as Tannehill and his stats go, how many of his stats have been piled up when the game was already decided? I can think of at least 5 games where we have gotten the shit kicked out of us (not just the defenses fault) , and I’m curious as to what his stats were when the game was out of reach.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I would love to see his stats in the 1st Qtr

I know our team was hopelessly outscored then
I’m guessing his stats are not very good int he 1st qtr as well

      • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

I know they suck because we have gotten off to notoriously bad starts in most of our games. This combined with the poor play on D put us in big holes that we were unlikely to dig out of.

  3. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

He throws more than anyone else but does less with it and is a lot less efficient

Piggy, I know you are using hyperbole but this is statistically not true. 21% of the starting QB’s in the league had more passing attempts than him…..

Now that I have “attacked” a false stat let me just say again, Tannehill’s play this year did not reach our expectations and was disappointing to say the least but he was not as bad as you are making out.

“but go ahead and act like I’m the foolish for believing that a new coach won’t want to go in a different direction at QB instead of rescuing Ryan Tannehill from the depths of being completely below average at almost everything he does”

    – I never said the new coach would not want to go another direction. That is impossible to say as we don’t know who that new coach will be or what he thinks. Again you are using Hyperbole (understandable when making and argument) He is not “below average in everything he does” He above average in some of his stats and below the mean in others. (THIS YEAR)

I get it. You are unhappy as am I but I don’t think he is the main reason we have issues on offense. Does he have issues? Hell yes. Can those be fixed? I think so. But we will have to wait and see.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

which stats would you say he is above average in?

ESPN says he is 8th in passing attempts
      not 22

That was not intended to be Hyperbole
that is what the stats actually say

He is 15th in TD and I’m calling 15 and 16 average
There are 2 stats I have him top 10 in
      pass attempts
      and pass comp

      this isn;t hyperbole
these are my reading of ESPN stats

      Those are not good numbers

  4. Randy's avatar Randy says:

Why do people keep talking about how much Tannehill gets sacked but refuse to acknowledge HIS role in that? He sucks in the pocket. He holds the ball too long. He rarely throws the ball away. Does any of that matter? I know the OL struggles, but they are not the only reason Tannehill gets sacked so often. Tannehill needs to improve immensely on his pocket management. He hasn’t gotten much better in this area from day one.
    ***
Huh, so this is what’s it’s like to be on the other side of this argument. Lol

  5. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

But if you are comparing QB stats, let’s compare Tannehill’s to all QBs who had their HC and OC fired mid-year and had their DC fired as well, so there was not even a cushion to take up the slack.

Not only does that cause turmoil for a QB to deal with week to week, but it also suggests that the season plans and schemes put into place in training camp were so bad they are also not something the QB can fall back on or even trust a little bit. What offense were they even running there for the last month?

To me, Tannehill is heroic considering he was basically asked to figure out what to do all by himself. They never did get a replacement OC and the HC was as young as some NFL players!!

  6. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

    Randy

Maybe if we sent him somewhere to show him what a “pocket” actually was supposed to look like he would learn what the “presence” was? 😉

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

You wont; find any in the last few weeks
the OL has been really bad recently

but there were moments during the year, not entire games, but times when protection was better and Tanny did not deliver or show any semblance of what an NFL Qb should be in the pocket

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Really like the game with the perfect QB rating and 4 TD passes? Come on, man. You’re going overboard with this stuff.

  7. Randy's avatar Randy says:

We need new players. Unless you’re bringing in a great coach who can work a miracle….we need new players. Even in an extremely down year in the NFL and a ridiculously easy schedule, we still sucked hind titty. IT’S THE PLAYERS!

    • Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

      Of this I agree 100%
Cut them all and we can play practice squad players for a year or 2!

      What you worried about?
      A loosing season????????????

  8. D's avatar D says:

Hearing rumors now that Tomlin might be on the hot seat in Pitt……wtf. If true and he does get fired, i know who i want as our new coach.

  9. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    wyoming,
Lol. Good one. I’ve never claimed our OL has played well.

  10. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

which stats would you say he is above average in?

Any and all of them that list him above #16 (the mean average) LOL

I’m not going to keep up this round robin. You are picking Tannehill for your emotional outlet. Fine. I AGREE WITH YOU his play this year was disappointing. Much like Eli Mannings were for years….. Let’s talk about something else.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

      its not an emotion outlet
on all of his stats he is 15 (TDs) or below except pass attempts and pass completions

take a look at his stats on the ESPN link I posted above
this is not an emotional rant

Ryan Tannehill does not have good stats
      the stats themselves are facts
not a matter of opinion or the product of being upset about the team

  11. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

So what do we need as an HC here? (if we are not going to give Campbell a chance to find an OC and a DC and put his players through a spring camp and a Training camp the right way, and I think we should)
Do we want to promote a DC or an OC or recycle a fired HC?

Or do something crazy like bring up the Clemson or FSU or Baylor coach from college. There are very few college coaches that can do the NFL thing. I prefer former NFL players.

But Jimbo Fisher was a great athlete and QB in college and is a proven developer of over-achiever QBs.

Dabo Swinney is a former WR whose proteges at WR are some of the best in the NFL.

Maybe that is what we need. A high-powered deep-ball offense. They both had very good defenses as well.

  12. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    naples
But, we fired all those coaches because they were making Tannehill worse! Lol
    ***
Shouldn’t firing all those terrible coaches have made him better? That’s what all the tanneholics said was going to happen. But, now it seems we also need a new OL, new WR/TE, a new towel boy, a new equipment manager, a new defense because our defense somehow makes Tannehill play worse. Is there anything else this organization can do to make the life of their very average, overpaid QB any easier? A new owner, perhaps?

I honestly think keeping your head on straight is a huge plus and/or necessity for being an NFL / HC or really any managerial job in the US. When they can remain calm and plan and work their plan and still flex when the plan starts to fail, then they win. If not, we get “PLAYOFFS??!!??”

  18. D's avatar D says:

I think if you use statistics to mark Tanny’s production level, and you took all statistics into account, you basically would come with “average” as your result. This year showed very little to see as improvement, except the 4-5 times all year we threw a deep pass, those looked better. The rest of the arguments about his +’s and -‘s hinge on your opinion of the skills he failed at, and what blame can be put on him vs the team around him and we have been tirelessly arguing those points for what seems like decades.

I know what i had hoped to see, and i saw the opposite of it. I am willing however to see it through and see if he can go back to, at the very least, the point i expected from him this year. My expectations were only to continue to improve in areas we already saw improvement, and start taking concerted steps forward in those we had yet to. This isnt unreasonable, and im willing to pretend this year didnt happen as long as next year he gets himself back on track. I still get the vibe he could be a great QB, but then again, there are a lot of people that fall short of their potential.

    D,
What has Tannehill ever done to suggest he can be great? Or, is that just wishful thinking? Personally, I haven’t seen a single thing to suggest he can be great. He is what he is….an average QB who needs a lot of good pieces around him to be successful. WANTING him to someday be great is one thing. Basing that opinion on what he’s actually done is another. Like any player, he may have moments of really good play, but average players also have really bad moments too…that’s what ultimately makes them average.

Giving up a long drive every time our offense scores DOES make Tannehill play worse, because we have to go one-dimensional (in Lazor’s mind) and the QB MUST make scoring plays, and the DL can go into pass rush mode every down etc. etc. and the dominoes fall.

  26. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Ok, I agree to disagree. The rest of the team stats are below average to. you “are not ranting” but seem to be fixated this morning on Tannehill for some reason. I am not in the mood to defend him. He sucks. Throw away the 13Mil next year and bench him. Use a top 5 draft pick on an unproven rookie and we can all say he sucks next year when he fails to perform with the rest of the sub-par team…..

That is just common sense. If you depend on one machine above all else in your factory, don’t you want all systems to prevent failure of that one component at all costs? If not, you get no product or an inferior, unsellable product coming off the conveyer belt. (a 5-11 season)

Half-assing it is in fact keeping one person and not the rest, regardless of that persons’ length of tenure. Half-assing it also includes keeping this but not that, then deciding a year later that THAT was also a problem so getting rid of that and keeping the new THIS, which has now been affected by the taint of the whole system. It does not get fixed until the system that drives it is fixed; Ross has the “cold”- everyone else will catch the “cold” until Ross goes to the “Doctor” and gets his “cold” cured. My opinion.
Tbaum already has a reputation- whatever it is, I did not include it, as it isn’t germane to my opinion.

If the Patriots needed a little more incentive to beat the Dolphins in Sunday’s regular-season finale in South Florida, they might have just gotten it.

According to a report in the Miami Herald, the Dolphins were so distrusting of the Patriots that they took extra equipment staff to Foxboro for the team’s game in October as a preventative measure. The Dolphins reportedly wanted to ensure that no Patriots employees would have access to Miami’s equipment prior to their Thursday night game.

UPDATE, 10:45 a.m.: Patriots coach Bill Belichick was asked about the story during his conference call with the Miami media Wednesday morning. Replied Belichick: “I’m just worried about what we’re doing, trying to coach our team. You’d have to talk to them about it.”

Mike Tannenbaum, Miami’s executive vice president of football operations, has a long history with the Patriots, as he was the Jets general manager when New York reported the Patriots’ Spygate videotaping operation to the NFL. The Jets coach at the time was Eric Mangini, who is rumored to be a candidate to be the Dolphins coach next season.

Meanwhile, interim coach Dan Campbell is looking to end his run with an upset of the Patriots, who are aiming for the top seed in the AFC.

“This may sound crazy, but, yeah, I want what they have and let’s see if we can challenge these guys,” Campbell said Monday. “Let’s see if we can compete.”

    MikeE,
So does almost every other NFL QB. OL’s are struggling in the league right now. Defenders are becoming much more athletic….not a lot of 340 pound hole pluggers anymore….and because of the liberal offensive rules, defenses are adjusting and focusing much more on pressure and sub packages. Plus, defenders tend to rotate in and put whereas OL do not…eventually leading to tired OL and much fresher defenders late in games.

With all that said, our OL has to play much better. But, so does our QB.

    • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

He’s made some bad plays, has mistakes. Bounces back from them. He shows grit & determination. Is a leader. Scrapes himself off the ground several times a game & keeps grinding.
So I don’t think he’s a negative for the team or in the locker room. He’s A+ outside the locker room too. More players should look to him instead of knocking him as Miko claims.

So there is still a lot of discussion on the merits of Ryan Tannehill. For those that want to argue that he is an average or below average QB, what then is your plan for the next season? I am of the opinion that he is not our GREATEST issue, and may be the hardest to replace even if he was. Realistically is it not more likely that they need to upgrade on the other positions because financially and practically that is more likely?

For those that think Tannehill is not the answer, my question then becomes…what is the answer for next year?

    • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Great question….none of the FA QB’s are. The draft prospects are raw & unproven. So a smart franchise sticks with a tough athletic kid like Tannehill and builds a team around him. Been saying it for awhile now.

They’ve put some nice pieces around him, and also made some not so good moves around him. Keep building, it will come!

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

we can go 2 directions in 2016

      1. Stick with Tanny for now. Draft a day 3 Qb with the intent of grooming him as a backup. Give Tanny 2016 to prove he is the franchise QB. Focus draft on defense and pick up some FA vet OL. I actually would prefer doing this. And if Tanny improves then we are set, if not cut our losses in 2017 and move on then – we have an out in the contract

      2. Use our top pick on either Goff, Lynch or Cook (probably not Cook – maybe round 2 early pick on Cook). keep Tanny on the roster in 2016. let him compete for the job with the rookie

either way he is probably on the roster in 2016

I don’t think QB is our greatest need either
but I do think you need a franchise QB in the NFL and I do not think Tanny has been at that level
So – with new coach coming in – I think making a move now is realistic

The salary cap works in either scenario
      rookies are cheap

I’m not looking at Free agency to get a QB

      • bookman11's avatar bookman11 says:

        Pig,

Thanks for the post. I like your first option and personally am on board with that. I think they need to draft a QB in the mid-late rounds, (I am not sold on Logan Thomas) and address the other equally pressing needs earlier in the draft and FA (as GDP alludes to above). If Tannehill does not improve with hopefully better coaching and schemes and an improvement in talent, then they have an out in 2017.

    its not an emotion outlet

Ok, I agree to disagree. The rest of the team stats are below average to. you “are not ranting” but seem to be fixated this morning on Tannehill for some reason. I am not in the mood to defend him. He sucks. Throw away the 13Mil next year and bench him. Use a top 5 draft pick on an unproven rookie and we can all say he sucks next year when he fails to perform with the rest of the sub-par team…..
    ***************
I’m fixated on Tannehill the last few weeks
    its not just this morning

the last few weeks my focus has gone from “still have a chance this season” to “what is our future”

I am not a hopeless Dolfan
I don’t see Ross as a problem and I’m not strongly opinionated about Tannebaum

I am thinking about the future
and my big question is – is Tannehill the future
that will be our biggest personnel move (or no move) in determining our future

I don’t agree with the dialogue that a new coach will fix him and fix everything
I think tannehill may be a problem, not the result of other problems

We are not in a dire salary situation with him
even if we draft a rookie – its a good situation
he either competes with a young talent
or becomes a reliable backup for one season without breaking the salary cap bank

I’ll say it again – I don’t favor drafting QB high
    but its realistic

I don’t want to gripe about Ross or Tannebaum
that stuff is too out there for me – I don’t think the relationship between Ross and the team is too direct
I don’t think those things will change anyway
maybe Tannebaum will change…we will see

but Tannehill – that’s a move the team CAN make (not that my opinion matters)
and I don’t think it should be dismissed

Discussing Tannehill as the future is relevant to the future of the team
and those discussions should not be dismissed

I think you will find me more optimistic than the average fan about our future
I just think that future may be without Tannehill

    of course your opinion matters

Your opinion that other opinions don’t matter or its the same old thing as always – does not matter. Not to me anyway

Tannehill is either the future of the team or he is not
And that is what this blog SHOULD be talking about now

this topic began b/c I mentioned (respectfully) that the Hulk post having a running theme about developing a young QB and why that might not be our focus – at least not regarding Tannehill

Its relevant to the Hulk post
its relevant to the future of the team
    its relevant to the Dolphins

Its not irrlevent bc you’ve heard Tannehill criticism before

And I will say it time and time again
People are dismissive about it – b/c they don’t want to hear it

Its not a decision that will lack controversy

There are good arguments not to part ways with Tannehill
But I believe its very much on the table NOW more than ever

we now have the 6th pick in the draft
and we might be able to be in that position to take Lynch or Goff

Its right in front of us now – more than ever
a month ago – it was not so realistic

I will say what I said a couple of days ago AGAIN
I would not be surprised if a new HC wants a new QB

On the field i think his leadership was undeniable, the OL had an identity and an attitude when he was there that it doesn’t really have anymore.

Pouncey is a so-so leader on the field, but i dont think he had the inspirational side that Incognito had. Again, this is not to say what he brought was good or bad, but his ability to get people to follow his direction both on and off the field, again, undeniable.
