The Wedge Scouting Report: LB Jaylon Smith

I can’t believe it!  Just my Velusian Luck!

I was getting ready to blow a little moon with a photon bomb and all of the sudden OUCH!!!!

Now look at me…

Wedgebrkenarm

My arm’s in a sling.  I’m out of commission.

Maybe I was pressing myself to eliminate too many lifeforms.

Luckily, I have been studying Earth enough to learn about their medicine.

Those Earthlings might be as dumb as Beam Beetles, but they do know how to fix everything fast!

ductWD40

Just apply a little duct tape here and a little WD-40 and I’m back in action destroying the parts of universe I don’t like!

Now look at me!

Back in Action!!!

WedgeCelerate

Speaking of injuries…how could this happen to Jaylon Smith!

And at the worst time in the Fiesta Bowl!

JaylonSmithInjury

If you don’t know by now, Jaylon Smith, considered by many to be the best linebacker in the country tore his ACL in the final game of his college career.

What bad luck.

This guy was a top 10 pick in the NFL Draft.  Before the injury Jaylon Smith could do it all.

JaylonSmith5

He can tackle, he can cover, he can rush the passer.  He can do it all!

He was the most athletic defender in a very good Notre Dame defense in 2015.

So what now, Smith?

Do you go back to Notre Dame and play late in the college season to show people you still have it…

NOPE not Jaylon Smith, he declared for the NFL draft soon after the Fiesta Bowl.

JaylonSmith2

And that’s just the type of move I expect from such an aggressive defender.

Smith has all the traits you like to see in a linebacker:

Aggression, Aggression and of course Aggression!!!

It’s that aggression that that helped Smith tally 126 tackles over the last two years.

And he is versatile.  He can play inside or outside at the NFL level.

JaylonSmith3

He’s got a little pop to him every time he tackles down the carrier.

Smith is like a missile when he diagnoses the play.

Here’s how I imagine his brain works:

1.  There is the Ball Carrier

2. BOOOOOOOOOOOM!

JalyonSmith4

Some people suggest that Smith needs to gain weight and is a little light for the position at about 235 LBs.

I tell those humans that the linebacker position is changing in the NFL and requires linebackers that move well more than anything else.

And Smith can MOVE!

JaylonSmith6

Smith is bound to be the kind of linebacker to excel in the modern day NFL in this alien’s opinion.  Unfortunately, the injury is going to push him down some draft boards.

Some team is going to get a defensive stud, if they are just patient.

Can Jaylon Smith be the next Todd Gurley coming back from a major injury to make an immediate impact in the NFL.

Hmmmmm…let’s see…a little duct tape here a little WD-40 there.

I think he will be fine in the NFL!!!

If Jaylon Smith was an Alien Weapon of Destruction.  He would be the Mythical Unstoppable Earth Cure of Legends!!!

JaylonSmithFix it

Check out some of his highlights!

So I was reading today on S.I. Peter King in his MMQB spot is saying the NFL should give the patriots back the draft picks they lost because of “deflategate” – No surprise there, but come on man! This BS propping up of a shameful cheating franchise must stop.

  2. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Wedge, nice write up on Smith. I have some questions regarding his size though. How does he do shedding blocks? How will he handle 300lb’ers blocking him in space? He is a bit light at 235 lbs. Will he still be a ‘stud’ when facing the big boys in the NFL?

  3. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I think Smith will be better as on OLB where he has less traffic in his face. The timing of the knee injury really was unfortunate. Feel bad for him. He’d be a good prospect for us, I just can’t see us selecting him at #8.

Paul Soliai will be cut but the Atlanta Falcons. And he still would like to return to the Miami Dolphins.

    Rock

levontae David was under 230 when he was drafted and now he is one of the best lbs in football

I think linebackers need to be agressive, instinctive and quick
I do t think they need to be 250+

If the block isn’t able to set up before the LB breaks up the play, shedding the block isn’t an issue

    More than anything else
Trams need lbs that can cover these days

So the size between safeties and lbs are more blurred than ever

And in a 4-3, the DL can eat up some blocks anyway

    I’ve said it repeatedly here
I wouldn’t get too concerned about LBs being under 240 pounds

    @AbramsonPBP

    I’m getting asked a lot about James Laurinatis & I’ll say this: there’s a reason Rams cut him. PFF’s 83rd of 97 LBs. Kelvin Sheppard = 84th

  8. Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

    Pig,
Kwon Alexander had 93 tackles (59 solo) in 12 games last season (suspended last 4 games due to violation of PED policy)
    Pre-draft measurables were 6′-0 6/8″ 227 lbs, 4.55 sec 40 time, 1.58 10 yd split, 36″ vertical, 10-01 broad jump, 24 reps on 225lb bench press.
TB selected him in the 4th RD and put him at MLB and not OLB.

  9. Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

    Piggy,

Also in the article of LSU LB Deion Jones I posted a while back, teammate OL Vidal Alexander spoke about what you just said about leverage & technique ….

“Teammate Vadal Alexander, LSU’s All-SEC right tackle who is also playing in the Senior Bowl, can attest to Jones’ speed. The first time they collided as freshmen in fall camp 2012, Jones made a big impression on the 336-pound Alexander.

“I used to always have to take great angles to sprint and go catch him and block him,” Alexander said. “I knew he was going to be great when I ran to block him and he hit me and knocked me back a little. I wondered, ‘How can a guy his size be so powerful?’ I never expected that, he caught me off guard. He’s gotten nothing but better.”

“He’s the fastest linebacker I’ve ever blocked, faster than Kwon (Alexander, no relation). Kwon is really fast but Debo is No. 1.”

    • D's avatar D says:

I like Jones just about as good as anyone, even with him being so small. He’s really aggressive, he fly’s around the field and he can make plays sideline to sideline. His coverage is a plus as well. I like Kentrell Brothers the best but id be perfectly fine with Jones as our selection.

  10. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Well, things should pick up around here tomorrow. The scouting combine gets underway and we will have all those stats & numbers to digest as if we know anything. LOL

This year the Dolphins get to open the off season program two weeks earlier (April 4 instead of April 18th because we have a new coaching staff. Woooooo hooooo!

I saw PFF post this recently…

Let me tell you, I didn’t know the name when i saw the headline on the side of another PFF article, but before I clicked on it I said to myself “I bet it’s #74″…Sure enough it was.
This guy took it to DeForest Buckner repeatedly in his matchup against Oregon.

    • D's avatar D says:

Conklin has been one of my favorites in what im calling second tier OT’s. Easily the best of that group and he has some consideration for being put up there with Stanley and Tunsil, though i believe both of those guys to be superior to Conklin and as i said before i only see Tunsil as a for sure start right away LT, Stanley being able to but id have my concerns with him the first few games until he got use to speed of the NFL. Conklin will be a this year starter but i think he will struggle early on.

    ——————————————-
I like the idea of adding a guy like him with hope he spins it around, his previous years speak for his ability so unless he just hit the age wall where all is downhill from here he’d be worth a low risk contract.

  13. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Round 1 Pick 8: Myles Jack, OLB/ILB, UCLA

Round 4 Pick 9: Zack Sanchez, CB, Oklahoma
Round 5 Pick 8: Joe Schobert, OLB, Wisconsin
Round 6 Pick 11: Romeo Okwara, DE/OLB, Notre Dame

    D,
It would be a dream scenario for me to have Deion Jones on the outside and Scooby Wright in the middle.

    • D's avatar D says:

Another plus for Jones is he plays gunner on ST’s and he is brutal. If you can find some of the games go back and watch him on ST play he has a real nose for the ball carrier and he gets them down fast.

  15. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Al, of course Alexander wasn’t part of the problem with Tampa’s defense, the MLB position isn’t a big deal. LOL

  16. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

D, yes, I drafted Drago there with him having the ability to move inside for us right away, & also be a guy that could be a great swing Tackle for us, maybe even replace Albert down the road as a starter @ LT.

    • D's avatar D says:

He has good techniques and good foot work at LT he just doesnt have the arms to keep them away from his body and he is a tad slower than you want at the NFL level. That said i think he is still better than half the LT’s in that respect but elite NFL level speed rushers are probably going to get around him and those with good technique on their power moves probably can get past him as they will have their hands on him before he has them on them.

  17. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I’m interested to see if our approach changes with the type of OL we target.

    • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Mine did. I went with big nasty brutes….lol
I swayed from the so called best suited for ZBS guys. There are some big uglies that have some quickness to them as well.

  18. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Ogbah would be a total steal in the 2nd round. He reminds me of a bigger Jason Taylor. Quick with great length to him. He’s exactly what Ireland thought he had in Dion FF.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

He’s not as tall as Taylor or FF though.

      • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

That’s fine, but he’s close and carries his weight very well. Is kinda like a Cam Wake build with similar tenacity.
He’s raw , still learning the position. But has that Nigerian work ethic to prove himself here.

  19. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

    D,
Pretty good assessment. Drango can get better at his technique as a OT though. But he had the longest arms @ the senior bowl, 36 1/4″ & a ridiculous wingspan of like 86″ with nearly 11′” hands…lol

But yes, i also like how physical he gets. His forte is pass blocking, but he’s getting better @ run blocking too.

  20. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Besides Soliai, I also saw that Randy Starks was released too. Starks could be a good fit next to Suh and can probably now be had cheaper than keeping Mitchell.

  21. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Maybe we can cut Suh and pick up Soliai and Starks, and save $100M? lol

  22. D's avatar D says:

Drango had 32 3/4′ arms at Senior Bowl GD. One of the smaller arm lengths for the OT group.

  23. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Remember the guaranteed money for Suh is just under $60M and RT’s is $45M.

  24. D's avatar D says:

Soliai got cut because he refused a restructure. They wanted to keep him.

  25. D's avatar D says:

Mitchell is a pretty good DT, i never understand the knock against him. He was better than starks 1 year younger ago if you catch my drift.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I don’t either. He’s not a sack guy but he holds his own and never stops playing. Our DT position was not the issue last year.

  26. D's avatar D says:

I think ya got Drango mixed up with someone GD. This was his measurements. 6’6 320 9 1/2″ hands. 32 3/4″ arms 79 5/8ths inch wingspan.

  27. dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

No way in hell do you bring Starks back. Guy has burned out by game 6 in his last 3 yrs with Miami….no clue what he did in Cleve, but he’s a shot fighter now.

  28. D's avatar D says:

    Le’Raven Clark i think had those numbers GD. 6’5 5/8 tall, 312, 10 7/8ths hands, 85 7/8ths wingspan.

  29. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

D, my bad. The site I saw with those measurements was wrong for Spencer Drango. Those long arms & big hands be,long to LeRaven Clark, who is another OT/OG prospect that I’m interested in. He’s probably gone by the 3rd rd, but ‘might’ still be available by the 4th round & could be a real nice get there!

  30. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    Logan Thomas in ’16!

  31. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

I’m not big on Soliai or Starks, was just throwing thoughts out there. Got the blog back active didn’t it. 😉
But with that said, I’d still look to part ways with Mitchell. Play Phillips more now & look to develop Coleman, as well as draft another DT if he’s the BPA in any round from the 4th on….that and maybe a lower cost young FA DT like Tyrunn Walker.

  32. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Personally I think our future at DT is the Suh and Phillips combo

If Soliai was signed I think he’s just depth
    He better come cheap
I think I like Mitchell better than Soliai as our #3

and Starks…to me that is sort of…what’s the point

we weren’t particularly good on D 2 years ago either

    • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

I’d keep Mitchell over Soliai too. But Mitchell is costing $4M this year. I’d like to see that number come down. His play seemed to regress when Suh got here. Not ideal when the guy next to you is eating up dbl & tpl teams.

  33. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I think Ogbah has real potential to be a very good DE

but he may not make an impact in 2016
which is fine by me at the DE position

    • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

I’d be ok with that too. Is why I think the 2nd round would be a steal for him as I had earlier in the first-pick game, even though he comes with a day 1 grade.
Got to love his speed too. Allegedly in the 4.6’s. I’ll believe that after the combines, but even 4.7 to low 4.8’s would pass the smell test for me.

  34. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

According to PFF Phillips was a weakness on our D last year as a rookie. He had one of the lowest scores at the position in the league last year. (PFF, take it for what it’s worth) I personally didn’t think he was that bad, but I don’t study the lines as much as some of you guys. I’m a ball watcher. LOL

    • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

He was a rookie that came out early, so he’s still developing @ just 23yo now.
He got better as the season wore on in a failed system scheme where the DL as a whole wasn’t playing up to snuff.

      • D's avatar D says:

On top of that if you are only in the game in short bursts you really dont have time to get a groove and show consistent play markers, which is what they grade off of. He basically is brought in told to pin his ears back and impress someone and over-aggressiveness makes him look bad on a few plays. Small sample size does the rest because one 0 in a sea of 100’s averages out the 0 to still a decent grade, one 0 with only a couple 100’s to balance looks way worse. He looked good to me from what i saw, i was pretty excited about the pick by the end of the year.

Le’Raven has a ton of potential, he is just really raw. LSU made him look stupid in the bowl game, to the point i almost took him off my draft board all together. I went back and watched a little more on him though and he would be a decent developmental project though, he has the things you cant teach so if we can just get him up to speed with the other things he has ridiculous physical traits.

Eagles and safety Malcolm Jenkins agree to terms on a new five-year contract through 2020.

  37. D's avatar D says:

Hey GD, check out John Theus, he almost the same physical attributes as Clark except he isnt as quick off the snap. He has better form, he is better trained from what i have seen and isnt nearly as raw. He showed a lot more consistent play against SEC defenses so he may be a better mid round LT prospect for us.

  38. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

$4M per year for Mitchell is not a lot for a quality vet DT who starts. Not every player can be had for the vet minimum or $2M per year.

    • D's avatar D says:

I agree, Mitchell is a pretty cheap player for the quality we get out of him. I would consider him at worst a rotational starter and at 2.5mil you would save keeping him you coudldnt get as quality a player signed from FA.

If there is a run at DEs
He won’t last until round 2
    —————————————–
It would have to be a pretty big run for him not to last to the early second at least. There are too many other prospects that are better than him. This is a pretty deep DE draft.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I’m thinking he is behind About 4 or 5 guys

    But DEs are usually premium
    ——————————————————-
As far as pure DE’s this draft i could see a bunch going in the first. I wouldnt be shocked to see this group all go in the first.

    Bosa
Buckner (im not a fan but people seem to love him)
Spence (someone wouldnt care if he raped a bus full of Nuns and orphans because of his talent)
    Lawson
    Bullard
    Calhoun
    maybe even Dodd.

Dodd would be my cutoff though, and i think each of those in that list is better than Ogbah. Personally feel Calhoun and Dodd join him in the second.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Personally I like Dodd, Ogabh and Calhoune
But I’ve seen Ogabh and Dodd all over the place
and many time sint he 1st round

  43. D's avatar D says:

Im thinking Laremy Tunsil HAS to be the No. 1 overall pick unless Tenn can get a really good trade offer. They have Lewan but i think they could kick him over to the RT spot and drop Tunsil in and it would give them a lot better OL to protect Mariotta. Tunsil may be the best overall player in the draft as well, personally feel it would be dumb of them to pass on him unless they got a HUGE deal from someone else to move up.

Only other selection i could see would be perhaps Ramsey, seeing as they just cut their top FS.

  44. D's avatar D says:

Cleveland may be in the same spot, unless they can really get good value from a trade i think they take a QB. New coach, new offense, miserable past involving that position, they either dont believe in any of these guys and trade it, or they make the pick. I think Goff is the best overall as far as higher ceiling, best polished skills and potential to develop into a star.

    1) Tunsil
    2) Goff

  45. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

D, yeah Theus is the real tall kid from GA I believe. He looked too fat & out of shape during the SB weigh-in’s. He’s got a lot of good experience & has been really durable, but I’d hate to spend anything under the 5th round on him. In today’s speedier NFL, I just see him more as a depth guy….IMO.

I’d rather get a guy like Beavers who I think will develop better over time, or staying with your thoughts on an SEC guy like Young from Auburn, or even Cooper from Miss.

  46. D's avatar D says:

Chargers could really use a few different spots. They could use a top DE, they could use a top WR and they could use a top S. All should be available when they pick so its probably just a matter of who grades out best and i think that will be Jalen Ramsey. A very close second pick for them would be Laquon Treadwell, but if im them i think there is more that says Ramsey is a superstar very quickly that Treadwell.

    1) Tunsil
    2) Goff
    3) Ramsey

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

its hard to believe a safety will be drafted #3 overall

but if Ramsey lights up the combine…it might happen

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Being that he can play both CB and S and is an elite talent he could go that high. He’s always going to be on the field and today’s game is about matchups more so than base.

      • D's avatar D says:

He’s freakishly good. As a CB i wouldnt take him in the top 15, maybe even first round, but as a FS id take him number 1 overall if i had a need at that position.

  47. D's avatar D says:

Tim i think the next pick is where you might see Wentz going. Dallas had the chance to work closest with Wentz at Senior Bowl, and they do have a need at QB since they really dont have anyone behind an aging and somewhat fragile QB in Romo. There is also the splashy factor which Jones likes to go with. They have a solid OL, they have need at RB but no way they would go that high, they are thin at CB, they also have need at LB. At this point i think it really comes down to this week and how well Myles Jack shows up at combine. He blows people away, Cowboys take Jack, he doesnt i think they take Wentz. I think its going to be the former.

    1) Tunsil
    2) Goff
    3) Ramsey
    4) Jack

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I don’t think you ponder LB or QB at #4. If you’re serious about QB there you’re talking the QB.

      • D's avatar D says:

Yeah but how good Jack is as a LB severly trumps how good Wentz is. This is a weak QB class and i think the Cowboys know it. Wentz’s throws at Senior Bowl wear flat, no zip whatsoever, i think he did more damage to himself than good and i believe all the shit being swirled around at Senior Bowl was a bunch of smoke TBH

      • D's avatar D says:

Again a lot depends on how well Jack looks at combine but i think he is going to really impress.

  48. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

    I like Ramsay a lot
one of my favorite players in the draft
I’m just saying, safeties usually don’t go top 10

    Yes, he can play CB
but I think most scouts are looking at him as a safety

I would draft him if I have a top 3 pick without hesitation

Personally I think Ramsay, Jack and Tunsil are the top 3 prospects
but LBs and Safeties don’t traditionally go so high

I guess Eric Berry was a high pick
    so maybe

  49. D's avatar D says:

Jags may be where my dream of getting Hargreaves ends. Jags have a pretty strong need in their secondary, UF is like maybe 45 minutes to an hour from Gainesville and the draw of pulling a UF star would give them additional draw for filling up some of those blue tarp areas lol. Then there is the question of if they see Alexander as a better fit for them than Hargreaves, so its possible even if they go CB it may not be the most likely one.

The other option is they go BPA and take Joey Bosa who grades out higher than any other pick and they just add another elite pass-rusher opposite Fowler, and kick Odrick back inside to DT. Getting Fowler back as a pass rusher solidifies a decent front 7 so i dont think they HAVE to invest too early there, just might depend on the prospect they have available.

Final option could be they see they have 3 picks, dont care which they get, and trade back slightly and take which ever is left. They might have to contend with Baltimore one pick back from them for one of the CB’s then they have us whom they might have to contend with with a DE or CB and Tampa pretty much right behind us that have about the same needs as us, so really only shot they have is SF. There is reason SF MIGHT want to trade with them if they want to make sure Balt doesn’t get to Stanley or Treadwell before them, but i think the chance is slim.

The rumors im hearing is they want to get more pass rush and will look to upgrade that first, so i have them doing that staying put to draft Bosa.

    1) Tunsil
    2) Goff
    3) Ramsey
    4) Jack
    5) Bosa

  50. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

D, if the Cowboys feel that way about Wentz with what you were saying, then they’re likely not taking him at #4 anyway. A lot of mocks have Wentz going before Goff because a lot of people think he has the biggest upside. The latest feeling is that 2 QBs could go top 3.

My point is that you’re not going to debate a LB vs. a QB at #4, especially one that isn’t a pass rusher. You’re taking the QB. I think the Cowboys should take a QB. I also don’t think it’s a weak QB class, it’s just not elite. There could be 4 QBs who go 1st round, that’s not weak.

    • D's avatar D says:

If i were them id wait and take a QB in the 2nd. There will be as quality a guy then as there is in the first. Wentz vs Cook vs maybe even Hackenberg isnt that big a deal and you can get one of those early in the second and not miss out on a guy like Jack.

  51. D's avatar D says:

Ravens have for sure needs at Secondary. With Hargreaves and Alexander having pretty much an identical ranking in most places i can find its hard to say which would be their choice. There isnt also isnt any hometown bias as there would have been with the Jags and Hargreaves. I havent seen anywhere where the Ravens have said they prefer one or the other so im not sure which gets chosen if they go that route.

Im not sure though the Ravens go CB even with its need because their OL was really bad last year resulting with them picking 6th this year. Monroe is their version of our Albert, he is really good but cant stay on the field and at RT they are worse than us. I think its very possible that Ozzie goes the safe route and pick Stanley to solidify the OL, giving them the LT of the future and someone to lock down RT in the meantime.

    1) Tunsil
    2) Goff
    3) Ramsey
    4) Jack
    5) Bosa
    6) Stanley

  52. D's avatar D says:

SF i think if drafting BPA+need it would easily be Laquon Treadwell. They have a HUGE need at WR he would be one of the highest graded players at that point, would make a lot of sense. The only other consideration i really give for them is possible Paxton Lynch, since he fits the play style of Chip Kelley. SF also could wait to the second round and pick up a guy like Dak Prescott who would also fit the system Kelley wants to run but i think the likelihood if they take a QB they go for one in the first.

Kaepernick could be cut to save the team almost 9mil in cap space and i think the general consensus with him is he will never be a elite QB. Replacing him now that you have a new coach who probably wants his guy most likely means they go QB and select Lynch.

    1) Tunsil
    2) Goff

That could be the case but the way the boards are shaping up says different.
    ————————————–
Its possible Tim, these are just my opinions from wat im seeing taking into consideration rumors i have seen, player rankings, team needs and how critical the needs are, etc. They arent hard pressed to get a QB, not in the same way for example the Browns or SF is, but they do have a need there. I think with their situation and likely having another year with Romo, they could get a guy like Cook or Hackenberg and groom a him a little instead of busting off with number 4 overall in a year thats not strong with QB prospects. They can always pick a QB another year ya know, they arent saddled with HAVING to do it this year.

  54. D's avatar D says:

    1) Tunsil
    2) Goff
    3) Ramsey
    4) Jack

    7) Lynch

Taking into consideration that projection for top 7 picks. Who would you think would be our pick at 8 and why? do you think we would attempt a trade back?

I have said plenty of times that if i got to pick 8 and any of the three Tunsil, Ramsey or Hargreaves were there i would stay put and make the pick. I still feel same way so i would pick Vernon Hargreaves at pick 8. I think he and Alexander are comparable but i think that Hargreaves has more aggressive style that i think our defense is going to be moving towards, giving us a better guy who can lock down one side of the secondary. The only thing that would change my thoughts on this would be us drafting an elite level CB in FA therefore switching the level of priority i have for CB over DE.

    8) Hargreaves

  55. D's avatar D says:

Walter from Walter football has us picking like this.

    1) Vernon Hargreaves CB UF
    2) Derrick Henry RB Alabama
    3) Sebastian Tretola OG Arkansas
    4) Chris Jones DE/DT Miss St.

Those are all good picks. The Chris Jones pick id be ok with as well except for they picked him instead of Kentrell Brothers whom went 2 picks later. Jones is considered one of the most talented players as a DE prospect by Matt Miller. He has some off the field concerns and thats why Miller said that outside these concerns he could easily put a 1st round grade on Jones. Jones has the size and athleticism to play both DE or move inside on certain formations and pass rush from DT position. I keep thinking of taking him in my mock drafts but wind up passing on passing on him in the 3rd-4th in lieu of other positions and picking up a second pass rusher in the later rounds. I find it wierd agreeing with Walter, but i admit this would be a pretty good first 4 rounds i think.

  56. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

D, I see what you were doing there. Hope that Dallas goes QB, that’s our best chance at Jack.

  57. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Personally I think the Dolphins should play up in the press taking an OL with their #8 pick so they can entice a trade down.

#11 Chicago where Gase just came from really needs a OT/LT & they have been mocked with Stanley.
#13 Philly with a new HC also may need to look for an OL as there’s talk of moving on from Peters & their OG’s may be worse than the Phins OG’s…lol
#14 Oakland may want to go OL early too to protect Carr if they lose their LT Penn who looks to be leaving for FA.
#16 Detroit should want to go OL early if Megatron stays. They should want a RT/OG, maybe even move Reiff to RT where he’s probably better suited & go for a true LT type early on.

All these teams have enough picks to make a move if they wanted to with the Bears being one of the bigger needs here for an OL and with the shortest jump to make to get at Miami’s #8.

Any thoughts on this from the Mob?

    • D's avatar D says:

I think there is a good potential to trade down, specifically because of Stanley, though i wouldnt release information about us wanting a OT with that pick because that would make those people look to trade above us.

      • D's avatar D says:

I think though you need to do it like this. Put something out there that makes it look like you are not in love with any players that you would be forced to stay put for. Make it a position like RB where you would likely trade back for to entice a team to look to you as a trading partner. Problem i see with it is Baltimore at 6 who might also want to take an OT, hell most teams in the top probably need an OT, thats why they are in the top 10 lol.

  58. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Tim, I just can’t see the Cowboys taking a QB @ #4, particularly in this draft class.
Jerry Jones will squeeze a few more years out of his boy toy Romo. That’s why he spent so much time building his OL.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Yeah if you see my mock up there thats pretty much what i had SF doing. I dont think though he makes it past Dallas, Balt, and SF. You can bet he is high on their boards and most teams do some sort of BPA selecting in the draft.

More just elaborating on the other teams position and why they would pick who i was mocking them to pick, but yeah a set up to 8 so that i could then see how any of us here would select given a certain scenario.

  61. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

D, I actually think the top 7 could go a lot of ways with 10-12 different prospects. You know some team always surprises and changes the order a bit.

    • D's avatar D says:

True, there is usually one of those oh wow kinda moves in top 10, i just think if anything someone would trade up for Jack and not as likely he will fall. If he does, great, but again it just seems to me when a guy like that is ranked so high EVERYWHERE its less likely he will fall than it is someone gets aggressive and trades up to get him early.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I’ve seen Bosa #1 for months now I’m seeing him at 5 and 6. It comes down to where teams have guys on their board, not these sites.

    —————————————-
They hurried him back to play us because at that point the season still was salvageable. Im not sure exactly why they ran that risk personally but they did and he re-injured it. I do think he is within a two years or so of retiring.

    • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Word is Romo is having more offseason surgery to insert titanium rods in all 206 bones of his body. Jerry Jones is paying for it. 😉

  63. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

D, Good point in reply above about teams wanting to jump past Miami if they thought we wanted to go OL, but it also wouldn’t hurt to put that feeler out. Because word is the Bucs @ #9 need to upgrade their OL to give Winston a better chance @ some consistency, they graded out as pretty poor last year, especially @ both tackles.

The Giants @ #10 have major issues all along the OL. Plus Reese just cut Will Beatty & Geoff Schwartz and new HC McAdoo being an offensive mind will want to protect Eli to he can get the ball to Beckham even more….lol

So actually that puts several teams just above us in play for a small to medium jump if we play the OT/OG need for ourselves.
There is FA’s out there, but not enough good ones to go around. So yes, I think we have real good trade down potential to pick up extra picks and only move down a few spots.

This also works for a couple other position needs as well. A lot depends on what happens in FA & of course who slides to us @ #8 when we’re on the clock on Day 1.

    • D's avatar D says:

Pretty much the Bucs have all the same needs we do which sucks cause it hurts any trade back scenarios we have unless we are sitting in the middle of a bunch of prospects all equal value to us and we can trade back and still get one of them. TB is the pesky gnat hovering around us waiting to snatch up whatever we pass on.

  64. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

The bottom line is we’re going to have a shot at a very good prospect at #8 who can help us become a better team. I’m not that concerned about it because we can use a few position upgrades.

Well we could wind up over drafting a kick returner with a great family or something…..

  66. D's avatar D says:

    Jacked up for Jack
    Hard-on for Hargreaves

Yelling “thats awesome” for Shaq Lawson.

  67. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

WR Treadwell could be a guy teams may want to trade up for in our range so that could be how we move down if we want to. He might be the only WR to go 1st rd so if a team is looking for that big go-to-guy he’s the guy.

    • D's avatar D says:

Yeah thats what i was saying with regards to him earlier, its possible if a team like Balt and Sf both pass on him for other needs, then he would become the BPA at our pick, and while i dont think we have a need at WR for someone like that and would be pretty upset if they drafted him over another position we did need, others will know he wont last long and would feel pressured to trade up to get him. I dont think though we become a big trade partner though because there is little chance TB takes a receiver high either, more likely they will be come the target with a team like NYG picking after, who might want to get a compliment to put opposite OBJ

  68. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

No trading down. We have so many needs just stay Pat at 8 and take BPA.

    • D's avatar D says:

I think we will. If you look at it with Jack, Bosa, Tunsil, Hargreaves, Ramsey, Alexander, Stanley, Bullard, Ragland, Lawson, etc etc there is 0 chance we dont lad a guy at 8 that we can really use. Its a nice place to be in, even if the guy they go with might not be on any of our lists. If they dont get someone good even picking at 8 everyone gets to call them retards and wish for them to get fired next year, so a little something in it for everyone.

  69. D's avatar D says:

Lol i did a few first-pick drafts where i was TB to see who the computer took for us at 8. Out of 3 it was 1) stayed put and selected Hargreaves, 2) stayed put and drafted Hargreaves, and 3) traded up to #1 overall and selected Jalen Ramsey lol. How many here would shit your pants if you saw that go down lol.

    ____________
Again, a team like the Lions @ #16 if they lose Megatron to retirement. They don’t want to waste Staffords prime years. They also will want an OL like I mentioned earlier, and they need help on Defense as well.

So everything is just so muddied right now, until we see what shakes out in the early weeks of FA.

  71. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

D, the Bucs have just 1 pick in each round except the 6th, they have 2 there.
They’d have to really love Ramsey to move up. If anything they’d move up for a DE which seems a bigger need for them than a DB.

  72. D's avatar D says:

Damn 10 runs now and its either Hargreaves, Alexander or Ramsey, with trade up or stay put.

  73. D's avatar D says:

I really wouldnt even sweat it if we stayed put and took Ragland. Im with all of you that would prefer a trade back but i dont think id cry if we took him at 8.

  74. D's avatar D says:

Ya know i was looking at trade values and if we do trade back we arent getting much trading back to say NYG at 10, thats about a 4th round pick in value compensation. If we really were looking to get some quality extra picks we likely have to trade back to somewhere around 15 to get a second in compensation. We will miss out on a lot of talent dropping that far back.

It may be best to just stay put and take a guy we like at 8 instead of trying a trade back unless we just really arent sold on the ones that are left. We need to add talent to this team so, trade up is probably a no because we take picks away from a new coach and trade back probably inst best because we are taking talent from a new coach. We want him to be successful we need to get him what he needs.

    • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Is why I was liking the first scenario I had with with either the Bears @ #11 or Philly @ #13. We still can get a Day 1 starter and gain another Day 2 selection, I was thinking an extra 3rd round pick.
Both teams are in the NFC, so it wouldn’t bother them much if they felt the need to get to #8.

  75. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

D, my trade down to a team who wants Treadwell was just one scenario.

  76. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Ragland is a pretty highly ranked prospect yet I see a lot of fans already have kind of written him off for us because he may not be the exceptional coverage LB everyone is looking for. There’s more to playing MLB then just dropping into coverage.

    • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Meh, I wouldn’t spend a lot on him. He’s had a lil more than one good year. A former 5th round pick who didn’t really get going until his 2nd to 3rd year. So that gives some hope for our Aikens, maybe even M. Thomas or Shamiel.

I guess Jimmy Walker sees the natural tie to him through Vance Joseph, which is what I said about maybe pursuing the Cincy LB Rey, Burke & Joseph will have some good intel there as well.
      Guess we’ll see soon enough.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Well he said he’s been told Joseph really likes him. He’s a big safety at 6-4 225.

I just read the article. I say hell NO to $6M per. Hell, former 1st rd pick Reggie Nelson got $4.5M and led the league with 8 INT’s. Maybe Iloka helped him get all those picks. 😉
Plus the Miami Herald is saying the Phins will pursue him or Pacman, sooo.

I want to know what Joseph & Burke think of Vincent Rey & Emmanuel Lamur

    • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

I just have this feeling wherever Ragland goes we’re going to see him as a core LB on some good team’s defense. He’ll probably drop to PIT and have a very good long career. That’s how PIT remains good. They let the draft come to them, pick good players and they’ve only had 3 head coaches since the 60s.
