Long story, but a woman I work with is going to Tennessee, so I told her to check out his restaurant. She’s going to Gatlinberg, and the name rang a bell. His restaurant is actually in Seiversville, but I was thinking of where he used to live, in Guttenberg.

  7. Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

For sure it was by the river cause he told me he would hit up that place in Jersey City called Zepplin Hall that I used to visit at times.

    Where is it? lol

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

It’s right below North Bergen. You sure it wasn’t Union City? If you drive along the river north from Hoboken there are a bunch of river towns on the cliffs.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I knew it sounded like Gatlinberg. I remember him putting up a pic on FB about the Guttenberg fair, or some celebration.

I just looked at NJ’s FB page, he was from Guttenberg.

  11. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

LOL @ Al, Guttenberg is a very small town.

Only four blocks wide, Guttenberg is the ninth-smallest municipality in the state[12][19] and the most densely populated incorporated municipality in the United States, as well as one of the most densely populated municipalities worldwide, with 57,116 people per square mile of land area.

It was 6-1 when all 3 started and finished. The 3 games I remember from 2015 were Houston, Tenn., and I believe Wash. Both Tenn and Houston were hot messes, Wash we stunk, but Landry bailed us out.

I’d like to know what happened in the games all 3 started, but didn’t finish, and what the circumstance was in the game when one of them went out.

I’m sure we’re a better team with our best guys out there on the O-line, so no reason to dispute that. I don’t think we’re an .857 team, but we’re definitely better with our best guys.

  31. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I tend to remember the one game we lost with the big 3 OL, was against GB, in a game the D blew at the end. We started off 2014 5-3 and were looking good against Det, when Albert got hurt. In the Det game there were 2 horrible calls that went against us, one was in the endzone right before half we got screwed out of a TD, the other was on a third down play on Detroit’s game winning drive. The receiver was tackled short, but the homer officials gave them the first down spot and of course the replay didn’t change the horrible call, Det would’ve kicked a FG to tie it.

In 2015 Albert was out from week 2 – week 4, we lost all 3, then he came back in week 5 we played great against Tenn., then we all know the blowout against Hou. James was hurt after that game.

With these 3+ Tunsil, fuck what Omar said about him stuggling, our OL is going to be very good. I’m not worried about the 5th starter, because of what the big 3 have done the last 2 yrs.

  32. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

This yr with a healthy OL, plus Gase calling the plays, a new group of receivers + Parker healthy to start, and something other than a high school O system.

On D we have guys that fit the scheme that have a chance against the taller WRs in our division, Vance to put an O on it’s heals, Suh, Wake and Williams to kick brady’s ass, and Kiko if back anything close to what he was will be 100 times better than what we had last yr.

12-4 tops 9-7 if it doesn’t go so well, 8-8 if injuries decimate.

    Mike,
I just checked prices for the Steelers game- it’s a total bunch of fucking bullshit. My brother told me about this when he got his season tix to the Niners. I was thinking “That’s robbery!”. JASON TAYLOR:
“I’ll tell you, the biggest addition they might have in Miami right now is Jim Washburn, the pass rush/defensive line extraordinaire coach. I spent a couple of days in the last few weeks at minicamp and the OTAs and seeing him work with guys like Cam Wake and Suh and being able to get those guys going a little bit, (like) Mario Williams, he’s going to be the biggest addition on that defense, I believe.”

Washburn was hired by the Dolphins as senior defensive assistant/pass rush specialist March 18 after he spent the past 17 seasons as a defensive line coach with the Tennessee Titans, Philadelphia Eagles and Detroit Lions, where he worked with Suh.

Taylor said that while he believes new defensive coordinator Vance Joseph will adjust his scheme to fit the talents of his players, the same isn’t quite true when it comes to Washburn.

“He will make them do what he wants them to do,” Taylor said. “And they’ll actually enjoy doing it. He’s one of those guys he’s got a certain way of doing things, certain way to get after quarterbacks and the technique and the angles and the speed is all the same. You could see him inspire guys already in OTAs. Having been through OTAs and sometimes feeling uninspired in those practices, it’s amazing to watch him work. I worked with him once at the Pro Bowl; it was an interesting three or four days of practice. And that was a Pro Bowl. This is real football now and I think they love having him there.”

  41. Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

    Good stuff Naples.
Hope it all translates well on the field.
The Dolphins DL front is loaded with vets who have been around the NFL for some time now and all have produced at a high level before except for one of the DT spots.
If Phillips has a step up this year then the sky is the limit for the DL.
The stories on Mario in Buffalo last year may or may not be true but we all know how good he is when he’s self motivated and right now it seems the fresh environment, a new coach (big time problem for him last year), and the surrounding players are motivating him.

  42. Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

The best part of players such as Mario, Wake, & Suh is that whatever inconsistencies they may have play to play in a game, they all know when to gear up and let it rip on a QB in terms of situational football late in games.

    • Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

I don’t think Vernon had that in him…he was a volume guy but he wasn’t clutch in that sense.

      • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

good point … I think Vernon’s penalties came in more critical moments than his sacks a lot of times, whereas Wake had a sack safety in OT for a walk-off victory and Mario beat us one year with two big plays in the 4th qtr to snuff any comeback drives.

Landry, Jones and Suh all in the top 100. Going forward if our QB finds his way in there then we’re a playoff team.

  46. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

About the top 100 thing, if there are 32 teams and each one puts in their best 3 players, then that is 96 guys, so only 4 teams get a 4th guy unless some team only gets 2.
So us having 3 as a 6-10 team is not bad at all, especially considering Wake did not make it due to injury. And Pouncey and Albert also got shut out even though they went to the Pro Bowl.
I’m assuming Suh is our last guy to get in.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

It’s a beauty contest, but having a few top 100 really just means you have some good players, and it doesn’t translate to W/Ls.

Maybe this year Suh will actually be worthy of being in top 100, we’ll see. His reputation precedes him, let’s see him actually make this defense a top 5 defense.

Just like you want Tannehill to be in the top 100, I want Suh to make this a great defense. Maybe if they give Tannehill an actual offensive line, we can see what he’s all about.

  52. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

What would make you happy with Suh’s play Mike?

  54. son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

Piggy was too busy watching the ball and the cheerleaders but I remember leaning towards him and saying you see Suh, he was blowing up every play the Texans tried to run for the entire first qtr. They had no answers.

  55. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    Naples

From my perspective, in 2014 we had a decent to good defense. We went out and gave Suh a monster contract, and our defense gets worse with essentially the same players. I was against paying him that contract from the start, because really, what team ever won the SB because they paid a DT a huge contract? I’ll answer it, no team. So we get Suh, pay him an enormous contract, and the D gets worse. Any explanation for that?

    • son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

Look no further than Sheppard and other injured or rookie linebackers. It wasn’t Suh, just go back and watch.
Sheppard was horrible, Kiko will make a HUGE difference.

  56. sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

The O couldn’t do anything because the miami offense got a 30 point lead in the first 4 minutes

    • son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

Right but we kicked off and then Suh stuffed their ass and it was on. He was impressive to watch in that first qtr.

  57. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    Son

Thanks for making my point. Appreciate the assist on that one. Glad you finally realized there is no point in paying a DT that kind of money. Bravo!

  58. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Mike … I understand your frustration, but I was just wondering how you would know if Suh was doing a great job or not.
So it’s rushing yardage against us …? ok that’s valid.
question though, who was our starting CB opposite Grimes?
Who was our starting safety opposite Reshad?
You know I follow this team closely and even I have to stop and think about those.
And when I finally come up with names, I feel QUEASY.

  59. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    Son

Just need to point out that it’s OK for you to point fingers at Sheppard and injured or rookie LB’s to defend the great Suh, but no one is allowed to defend Tannehill by saying our rookie OL or replacement OL for the injured players sucked. #doublestandard

Must point out the hypocrisy there

    • son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

You are correct. QB’s are different and I absolutely have a double standard. Without many exceptions except for a truly great runningback like a Dickerson the QB is the only one who can put the game on his shoulders and win or lose it. Ryan has to get better at winning and scoring late in games. I hope Gase breaks through.

      #gottascorelate

  60. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Then throw in the MLB who was always known as a “drag-down” LB rather than a “fill the hole” LB, and you can see that all the opposing OC had to do was scheme a doubleteam against Suh, and now his RB is running against an injured Misi, an injured Jelani, and/or 2 UDFA rookies.
Because our “drag queen” MLB was not man enough to “fill the hole,” in football terms.

  61. son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

Anyway, I’m done with ripping Tannehill. I got it out earlier in the year. He’s here and all signs are positive thus far so I hope Gase and Co. get him and the entire O going.

Suh should be a lot of fun to watch this year as the whole D-line should be stout.

  62. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    Son

If you asked Tannehill, I’m sure he would agree with that. We have to help him do that by giving him some modicum of protection though. Now he seems to have sufficient weapons to work with, and hopefully Tunsil is an important piece we added to help give Ryan time, and keep him upright. When that happens, maybe we start scoring those late TD’s.

    • son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

      That’s really my only gripe.
I know he needs better protection as a whole but he needs to also learn to help himself better at times.
Gase should offer a better balanced less predictable attack that will help.

  63. son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

I was either saying or agreeing with someone last year who said that they should have garbage cans set up and have T-hill throw balls into from the 20, 30, 40 until he consistently hit 4,5,6 in a row. Become automatic at it. I saw that they were doing that the other day.

    #qbgurusonsaidit

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I also like that Gase said he was purposely “heaping too much” onto Tannehill’s plate all at once “to find the breaking point” and that one time Tannehill improvised and found Landry (of course) for a 1st on 4th and 10.
That seems obvious, but how many times last year did they force Tannehill to use the play that was called and throw to Landry 4 yrds out (or a f’n yd behind the LOS on those putrid bubble screens) and then beg Landry to get the other 6-12 yards on his own talent?

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

So a rookie HC can see the obvious, but the great Philbin was clueless?

As handcuffed as RT has been he’s really hard to evaluate. He looks great when someone is open, but not so good when things break down. How many times in the last 4 yrs have we seen receivers just going through the motions, because the play was flawed, and he couldn’t change it? Many times it looked like the receivers were just going through the motions, like this FN play will never work against this scheme. For example calling a go route against a cover 2.

      • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Good example, … I am screaming to my sons “Look!! That’s the wrong call vs that D!!”
And they’re like, “Dad! Why’d the coach call it then?”
And I’m like, “Beats the hell out of me!”
If some old never was like me can see it on TV, how come Philbin’s boys upstairs with binoculars and decades in the NFL could not see it?
        One word. STUBBORNNESS.

Maybe this year Suh will actually be worthy of being in top 100, we’ll see. His reputation precedes him, let’s see him actually make this defense a top 5 defense.
    ———————————
This is exactly the type of post I’d expect from you Mike, stat driven. Many of the experts say he had his best yr in 2015. Without an LB behind him that actually can make plays a lot of Suh’s worth went unnoticed.

Suh should’ve been top 10 on the list.

One on one he’s unblockable for most guards. You have to double him or run far away from him. Only thing is now, Mario Williams, a #1 overall draft pick, is lurking to clean up on the far end and Alonso, a rookie DPOY, is vacuuming up the middle.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

OV seemed to make most of his plays when the receivers were covered and several seconds after the ball was snapped. He was more a compiler of QB hits than anything else.

I think Philbin for whatever reason, maybe the “former WR” BS, always babied Tannehill. And maybe he needed that his rookie year. Maybe all rookie QBs need that. I recently read in different articles where they are opening up the playbook for Jameis and Mariotta this year. Look at Bortles and Carr in yr 2 as well.

But at some point, you have to give the reins over to your QB, and let him play QB which means he is in charge of the offense. I think Philbin was the ultimate control freak (gum wrapper) and could not relinquish enough responsibility to let his guys make heads-up plays (on defense also).

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

      That’s what I saw.

Philbin was our 7th choice, he was just given the job, because no one else wanted it, Gase 1st.

  67. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

So Gase is doing the opposite. He is putting it all on Tannehill.
That way if Tannehill can do his job, he will be great and we will all be happy, and if he can’t, we will all know it, and Gase has only wasted one year of his opportunity and he can legitimately ask for Ryan’s replacement.

    • son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

Yup and Ryan is talented enough and been around enough that I think he’ll do fine.

      • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Tannehill is tough as nails, fast afoot, throws well on the run, smart and diligent about learning, and a serious player with a stable home-life instead of a Johnny-Man-thug-wannabe type. I think he has the measurables and the intangibles. He just needs creativity and to know when and how to improvise, from little floating side-steps to skipping forward in his progression when a man pops open for a TD that was a third read.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

He doesn’t have the intangibles, at least he hasn’t been able to display them. Everything you mentioned starting with He just needs creativity… Those are the intangibles he needs. He has the things you can’t teach.

Yep and unlike Sparano & Phiblin, Gase actually called plays in games as a head coordinator and his work could be judged in that department.
I would never as a GM hire a HC who at a minimum has never called plays on one side of the ball.
I think when teams look for coaches they should be looking at guys who have excelled or at least been above average coordinators with some experience in big time games (and be judged by what is in their control in those big games). If the Fins had applied the playoff performance of Cam Cameron in the year prior to his season as HC in Miami, they would have seen a choke job (a red flag) and avoided him.

Do you think JJ Watt doesn’t get double and triple teamed?

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

It’s not the same on the outside, you can’t just slide a guard over when he’s going around the end. When the middle is clogged there’s no place to go. Suh got frustrated a lot last yr, because he was getting the extra attention and the guys behind him were Phibining it.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

There’s a place, you drive through the double and triple team, just like Watt does. Your argument against everything is you can’t use stats. Of course you can, because they count. They just do. It’s a gauge of how productive a player is. You make tackles, it’s good. You get a sack, it’s good. You fight hard against 2 or 3 guys, but don’t get the ball carrier or the QB, it’s not so good. Admirable, but not so good. If Suh was so frustrated, let him tear the QB’s freaking head off instead of disappearing in a game. Also, in a 3-4 DE, a 3-4 end is just about as inside as a 4-3 DT

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

He does, but he is a DE which means usually a TE or RB is just chipping him rather than a OG and C or OG and OT which are two big boys ganging Suh. I know they play a 3-4 a lot more in Houston, but still …

And I have seen him washed out of plays were he gets up-field TOO soon. Plus they have some really good ILBs and MLBs and last year they made it back to the playoffs partly because Vince Wilfork was eating double-teams off Watt.

Look at some film of Watt, he faces 2-3 OL sometimes on a play. To say he mostly goes up against a TE is folly. He’s facing the LT, RT, and then often the LG or RG too depending on where he is, and then a RB or TE too. He’s just a beast. There’s no one like him in the NFL. Suh has at least 5-10 that are his equal or better.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Suh gets the same treatment when he plays end, and the results are similar. I’d play him at end a lot more on early downs.

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

No I meant the second guy of the double team is a TE or RB along with the RT. (Watt rarely rushes the LT.) He does not naturally get that RG/RT or RG/C double that Suh gets.
Unless there is a twist or something, Watt is rarely rushing against interior linemen. So even when he does go inside, it is more of a delayed stunt designed to get him some free space in which to work.

He almost never just lines up in a 4-point stance in a gap in the phone booth where Suh lives every play.

I do agree that Watt is “better” than Suh, but you are talking an insignificantly tiny percent. Like Montana is better than Marino because he was more successful. I hope our new coaches give Suh more space in which to work this year.

    • Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

Can’t really compare Watt to Suh since they play different positions.
Watt could not do what Suh does on the inside and probably Suh cannot pass rush like Watt.

    http://www.thephinsider.com/2015/11/19/9761578/miami-dolphins-nadmukong-suh-dominates-philadelphia-eagles

He has definitely taken over the game at times in 2015

In theory there should be a few games like this for Suh a season

and I don’t think he was up to that level in 2015
especially at the start of the season

but the reality is he won’t take over games week in and week out
other people around him will b/c he commands so much attention

and that did not happen last year

now cue the Ryan Tannehill comparisons from people who say he same should apply to Tannehill on offense

the reality is once Suh signed that contract people were eager to criticize him and will continue to be
That is all that matters to some people

the criticism of Suh is not valid given his peers just voted him to the top 100 football players
but okay keep making the argument that he’s not a special player

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Being voted #40 didn’t do him any justice. Players read the stats too. Not sure how the others on a team voting are supposed to know what it’s like to go against Suh. That’s the only true way for these polls to be valid.

In a response above I wrote that Suh should lineup on the outside on early downs. I know teams will exploit this by throwing more early, but against teams that like to run it a lot, like the jets I’d use it. To keep teams like the cheats honest I’d lineup Suh outside and move Branch inside, but not on consecutive plays, it would be done as a shift. There’s lots of versatility on our DL, I hope we use it this yr. Gase talks about having RBs that can play all 3 downs, I think we can do the same on the DL, and move guys around.

When GSW win game 7 by 20+ pts it will be obvious to everyone how fixed the individual games were. There hasn’t been a close game yet.

Games 1 and 2 in Oakland, the Warriors were allowed to grab, foul, mug… Lebron
Game 3 Clev was allowed to return the favor on GSW stars.
Game 4 GSW overcame the officiating and still won.
Game 5 Green was suspended to give Clev. the advantage, and they got calls on the road.
Game 6 Clev. again got every call, but that wasn’t enough they even fouled out Curry on several questionable calls.

Like I’ve mentioned I want the Cavs to win.

I think GSW seems to have been taking lessons at the OKC flop school, as I haven’t noticed them doing it before this series.

I don’t think the coaching has anything to do with his 2016 year

The point I was making was that a bad coach can be a good qb coach
and good for a qb, even though they aren’t good for winning

It wasn’t just Tannehill either, that was how the offense was constructed – you run this play with a run/pass option but we’re not changing the entire play.
