What Make Hulk Angry – The Browns

By Dr. Bruce Banner

So Hulk watch Miami Dolphins score 30 points at home opener in fancy brand new stadium. So you think Hulk be happy. Of course not, you all know better than that. Hulk never happy. However, problem is not just that Hulk is not happy, Hulk is pissed. Hulk is enraged with anger at one of worst performances that Hulk ever watched against puny Browns team with rookie 3rd string QB. Hulk so angry that he can’t even go on a rant rather he just list all things that made him angry this past Sunday. So here it is:

Hulk is angry that:

That Ryan Tannehill looked like the game was too fast for him 5 years into his career;

That even though offense was sluggish it got going enough to give team a 24-13 lead halfway through 4th quarter to only have defense let a 3rd string quarterback and depleted corps of wide receivers come storming back;

That even though defense let offense down in 4th quarter when offense got the ball back they promptly did nothing to win the game;

That the run game looks completely out of sync and incapable of running out the clock when it needs to;

That when you have a running back by committee you do not have a true no. 1 running back;

That our linebackers look like they are trying to execute a Chinese fire drill as opposed to an NFL defense;

That Byron Maxwell is capable of making plays in the secondary but apparently only when he wants to;

That our offense keeps giving the ball away like it was re-gifting a bad toaster oven;

That for about the 10th year in a row the punter is the best player on the team;

That the Browns had effectively one player on offense, Tyrell Pryor, and despite knowing that we seemed incapable of devising any defensive scheme to stop him;

That Juan James once looked like a promising player as a rookie and is now working his way out of the lineup;

That Mike Pouncey can’t get back in the lineup;

That instead of playing up to the competition this team always finds way to play to down to the competition instead; and finally

That every year Hulk think it going to be different but no matter how much things change the results are always the same. Well, Hulk admits at least one thing different: For once the opposing team’s kicker missed a crucial kick, career long or team record long kick to beat us as time expired. So Hulk figure we got that going for us. Now Hulk smash!

  3. Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

    There is poor cohesion for sure at the moment on defense and I’m hoping there will be a light bulb moment where they start to click but the LB unit really has been a sore spot in the run D game. Vets like Jenkins should not be getting caught shooting the wrong gaps and ignoring the cutback lanes.

    Mike, I was replying to D saying he’s not singling anyone out and my reply was because it’s not one or two specific guys, it’s more than that. They see it when they go back and watch the film.

    Ken,
    Agree on political talk here.
    My brother and mother asked me yesterday if I was going to watch the debates and my answer to them was “I’d rather watch grass grow”.
    Completely pointless to watch a debate.
    Really all it serves is for people to brag about how their candidate may have performed or more ammo for people to crap on their antagonist.

    It’s miscommunication/mistakes. The coaches have to clean it up.
    —–
    Agree 100%.
    Coaches can’t fix the talent level but they can point guys to the right ways and bench their asses if they continue to make mistakes. We’ve already seen Gase benched more than 1 person over these matters.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

      Mistakes can make players look like shit when they’re not.

      That’s why I’ve been saying Gase is learning about who he can trust and who he can’t at least for now. We haven’t seen much of Grant because Gase doesn’t think he’s ready as a WR so he’s strictly a return man and depth.

  11. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

    The best “political” discussions are about ideology and policy, not candidates. When you discuss what would be best for all Americans you actually get somewhere in a discussion. But when you go in with your party flag and ready to defend your candidate at all costs, it goes nowhere.

    People tend to focus on hot button topics like what about what he did or what about what she did? Okay they both do fucked up things. What about what’s best for the American people? We all want to live good lives in peace. So how do we get there? That should be the discussion and I believe people should have these discussions. Work as a team instead of wearing blue and red.

    From Oddsshark.com’s Bengals-Fins preview

    “Statistical Matchup

    Offensively, the game matches up the Cincinnati Bengals No. 25-ranked offense (18.67 PPG) against a Miami Dolphins defense that ranks No. 15 at 22.33 PPG. The Bengals passing attack has averaged 293 yards per game, more than the Dolphins give up through the air (268.33 YPG on average).

    In comparing defenses, the Miami Dolphins own the league’s No. 23-rated front 7 in terms of stopping the run, allowing 136.5 yards per game when on the road. Cincinnati, on the other hand, rates No. 9 this week in generating rushing yards at home.”

    “Handicapping models based on recent betting stats and prediction formulas pick a 30-15 win for the Bengals.”

    Last game what i saw was some really bad play on the LB’s covering gaps/cut back zones. Had multiple times where Jelani and Alonzo werent on the same page on their gap assignment or their coverages. It screwed us up pretty bad both in running and the passing game. I saw a few things with Philips and him doing something i woudnt have thought was something he was called to do, just because of the defensive formation we were showing and what some of the other players did, so he might be a little suspect. I honestly didnt pay much attention to the DE’s. Misi i couldnt tell you WTF he was doing other than not a whole lot. I know you guys like Hewitt, but he was off on a few plays. I think you can chalk that up, in his case, to not a lot of play experience, and definitely not a lot in this scheme, because he made of nice plays too.

    • BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

      I like Hewitt. I think if he gets the details down he can be a good LB.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

      Nobody plays perfectly either. But when you have miscommunication and mistakes it can make the entire unit look bad. Gotta clean it up. That’s on the coaches to reiterate it and get it across to the players so it’s less and less.

    • D's avatar D says:

      Something doesnt add up here to me on this. I wonder if James had something shitty to say after the strip sack, like maybe he balled out Tanny or said something shitty when he was called out fornot holding the block longer. Simply not preventing the sack would not have been enough imo to bench a guy who generally is pretty solid.

      • BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

        it was 2 plays. The 2nd INT was also James man hitting tanny’s arm. I think it was the combination of the 2 plays.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

        It probably wasn’t one play. James hasn’t been consistent at all but he’s still a young player. I was guilty of looking at him like as a core guy but he’s still developing too.

  23. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

    Boulder — but here is a Q for you. Can James play guard?

    Seems we might be able to find someone else on the roster who knows how to play tackle. Might even be playing G now.

    • BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

      You mean Tunsil? I don’t know if he can play RT. Also it sounds like Albert has an ankle injury. So we might need Tunsil play LT this game.

      Armando Salguero @ArmandoSalguero
      Clyde spoke about Branden Albert in the same vein he did about Anthony Steen. Suggests Albert ankle injury bigger then we thought.

      • D's avatar D says:

        Well hell its already starting to fall apart lol. Guess we get to see what we have in a franchise LT earlier than i had expected. Any sort of knee jerk about James changing positions because of one play is just that, overreaction.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

        D — fact remains we have three starting quality tackles…..or at least thought we did. Whether injury or otherwise, seems the other two should line up.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

      I was just kidding around (and yeah was talking Tunsil), but a health issue for Albert would be bigger than anything going on with James.

  24. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

    I think we’re all rushing to judgement on too many players. If you just stop and realize that this team is learning itself as a team, you realize it’s likely to take some time. It could be 5-6 games. That’s why I’ve said in the past if that’s the case hopefully we get some wins along the way so we don’t dig too deep a whole and end the season before it’s even halfway through.

    • BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

      other teams with new coaches, like the eagles, didn’t need 5-6 games to learn the system and they were coached by chip the last few years.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

        It’s not the same situation for every team. The Eagles might lose 4 in a row from here. The Jets started out 4-1 last year and were 5-5 before a 5 game winning streak. The Falcons started off 5-0 last year and finished 8-8. Teams have different ebbs and flows. There are plenty of examples of good teams starting off slow then go on runs. There isn’t a set formula.

  25. Realist's avatar Realist says:

  27. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

    Boulder, I’m focused on our team and our issues, not what other teams are doing. That said, what do you think Steelers fans are saying after their last game? Some of what I heard is they didn’t show up in an phase. I didn’t see the game but the scoreboard seems to validate that.

  28. D's avatar D says:

    The int throw. James did get beat to the outside but look at this play.

    https://youtu.be/ZtzFJoN1k3k

    James had rode his guy far to the outside, which is what you do when a speed rusher gets a move on you. You lose them and the way to recover is to push them so far out that the arc of their rush buys a little more time and it give the QB a chance to move up. Tanny was DEEP in the pocket, very odd for a play where majority of the routes were underneath and even the deep rout was only a moderately deep underneath route.

    Look closely at the play, this one is designed to get Jarvis or Sims open on a quick strike to move the chains. Most likely its primary was Sims since Jarvis hs the undereath route and was behind the first down yardage marker. It actually worked, because Jarvis was being covered and kept short, but that Sims was getting open coming across. Tanny should have thrown to Sims on that play well before the pressure got around the outside, but if he was waiting on the play to develop more he should have known he was getting 2+ seconds deep in play time, and anticipated pressure and either scrambled to the left, or dropped further out of the pocket so that the pressure got directed in front of him. If you look at it you can see James eventually re-established control and rolls him to the ground in front of Tanny. There was no hit on Tanny, he basically at the last minute stepped back and was on the back of his heels throwing across his body now because Jarvis had come further across the field than the play was originally intended for him to be passed to.

    If he hits Sims with the right timing on that play, first down. Even waiting a little longer for the development, If he anticipates the rush and rolls to the left, passes to the outside of Sims, thats a first down plus some. If he just picks up on the pressure, steps back and lets the guy fall in front of him, he then would have been perfect position to swing it out to Ajayi, likely afirst down, though he would have had to make LB miss to pick it up i think. Hell if he just throws to Jarvis before he crosses to the right side of the field, Jarvis had an underneath dump off, he gets a completion, and maybe a first down if Landry can shed his guy.

    It really was both bad read, and not anticipating pressure. I know James could have played that better, but that kind of shit happens to an OL. They catch you on a first step and you just have to know what to do to recover. Tanny has to help them out by moving his statue ass. James is being called out for 2 plays, but this was as much on Tanny as him, and as soon as i find the video of the strip sack (which the sack might be on James but the fumble part isnt) i bet you will see Tanny had a strong amount of contribution to that play as well.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

      I didn’t see it as cut and dried as you did. RT probably should of just taken the sack. I didn’t see anyone open.

    • D's avatar D says:

      Here is the strip sack play.
      https://youtu.be/hQ10jsXuBFM

      James has his guy defended pretty well. The pocket was great, Tanny had two guys monkey fucking right next to him and he cant even step up, or roll out, or do something. Instead he decides to hold his hand back so the De can get it. Im sorry if James got pulled for that they need to play Matt Moore for the first series this Thursday because that wasn’t even close to being full James’ fault. 3 seconds, he didnt even flinch. He had options to move, or very very least tuck the fucker and take the sack.

    I’ll tell one more thing about Jose cause this one has to be the best; In his rookie season we where playing the Braves and he had a thing going with their pitch. In his last at bat he does a bat flip after hitting it out. When he got back to the plate Mcann gets all up in his face about it.
    After the Game Redmond calls Freddy to appologize for Jose’s actions. Freddy says, Oh Jose, he is already over here. He took it upon himself to go over to their clubhouse still in uniform and appologize to the pitcher and the rest of.them.
    Okay I wont bore anymore with him but there is at least a dozen more stories out there. I hope they make an ESPN special someday soon.

  37. D's avatar D says:

    Concussions though Mike have nothing due to having previous ones.

    Also all this bullshit about research for better helmets to prevent concussions is retarded, you cant prevent them because impact has nothing to do with getting it, its the sudden jerk/change in motion that causes the brain to bounce off the inside of your skull. You would have to prevent any way for the motion not to be abruptly changes, which pretty much means you would have to have a fully foam field, everyone would have to play wrapped in bubble wrap, etc. You would have to have cushion inside and outside the helmet for sure and even then its not likely to prevent all of them.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

      D – Pretty sure that concussions are cumulative, that’s why a lot of players had to retire. I think the risk of having future issues as you age increase with each concussion

  38. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    The whole blog is concussed . . .

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

      Possibly. That whole what we used to call “seeing stars” thing when you couldn’t walk right after. Would that call for the “concussion check” these days. If so would have been checked out by a doc a number of times.

  39. D's avatar D says:

    The negative effects are cumulative Mike, but how succeptable you are to them never changes, They are caused by the brain bouncing against the skull, so there isnt anything that would make the next one happen easier. The effects of them like the persistent dizziness, etc, those are cumulative.

    • D's avatar D says:

      In other words, Cameron might would have to retire if the cumulative effects make him unable to play, but just because he has had 2 or three there isnt any more likelihood of him having a 4th. I guess what im saying is until he has had too many there is no need to worry about him more than anyone one else, because some other guy could get one just as easy and his might be severe enough to be career ending on the first go. Just depends on how severe they have been and how many.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

        I’m definitely not saying that D, I get that. I’m just saying because he’s endured so many concussions, he may just decide to stop playing, or his doctors might tell him to.

        Thats true. I dont know much about the severity of the ones he has had in the past.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

  41. D's avatar D says:

    Im hoping if they go RBC for the next game its more Drake and Ajayi for the bulk of things Williams and Pead more in dual back sets. We saw a couple plays out of a dual back set and i really liked that

  42. BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

    more on free lancing from Mando.

    I also explained there was freelancing by some defensive linemen going on and that needed to stop. Joseph agrees.

    “Yes. Yes,” Joseph said. “That happens when guys are pass-rushing every snap. We’ve got to play blocks better. Every snaps can’t be a pass rush. When you’re pass rushing, you can be softer in your gap. But you still have to be in your gap. It’s soft so it gets moved so for the linebacker instead of it being a smaller gap it becomes a big gap.

    “We’ve got to recognize run and pass better and play blocks better up front. And that’s an issue when you’re an attack front. We’ve preached, ‘Attack, attack, attack.’ but in the same aspect they’ve got to play blocks better.”

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

  46. D's avatar D says:

    I want them to get better, i think most here do, its just a level of belief that it will get better when you see similar shit year after year.

    I dont think Gase is inadequate as a coach, i like his style, i think he resonates with the players, i think he knows how to spot a problem and attack it. That said i really do want to see him start showing us more. You see little glimpses of it, but then he takes it away about as fast as he showed it, and the troubling part is, certain aspects obviously are working so its infuriating for him to then go away from it. Im sure he has his reasons, but it feels like being toyed with lol.

    Kiko looks completely bewildered, and just not able to run the defense. He is guessing on formations and getting it wrong a lot, he doesnt seem to know his assignments, or he is real shitty at directing others to theirs, but its all kind of out of whack at the LB level and thats on him as our MLB. I still have hope it settles out because i think he could really run the defense well, but im running out of belief that its going to. If things havent settled out by mid season, i dont know how im going to feel about his chances to ever be productive for us. He’s pretty much the only one right now that i am really concerned with, and its mostly because of how important the position is for the overall productivity of our defense.

  47. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

    Piggy, teams do grow together and improve during a season. It’s not always pretty along the way but it does happen.

    I think we as Phins fans just want to see a good team after years of mediocrity or even worse. But many of us ignore the current circumstances as if it has anything to do with much of the past when it does not.

    Does anyone know off the top of their head how many new players are on this team? That doesn’t take into account the 2nd and 3rd year players still trying to find their way. I’ll tell you, 22.

    This team has no real history together. Add that to new coaches and it almost takes magic for it to come together in such a short period of time. LOL

    Home record is 1-0 now. Bet you by the time we go back on the road our record is better than our away one.

    D,
    Kiko is having issues at the point of attack (getting bounced by offensive players) and also free lancing on pass plays (vacating too much area at times), however he has made quite a few nice plays at least including the hot pursuit play that ended Garoppolo’s day vs Miami.

    As inconsistent as Kiko has been, Jenkins has been just as inconsistent costing Miami long run plays and crucial 3rd down failures defending pass routes.

    We won the Redskins game at Fest I. Fest II was ugly losing to TEN 41-3. Not sure about the ones I wasn’t at.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

      That was Tanny’s rookie year

      I think we lost Year 3 as well but I can’t remember to whom

      Was it the Green Bay game?

        I don’t remember Piggy, I wasn’t there

        Did I only miss 1 Fest? It seems like 2 or 3

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

        Depends on what you count as a Fest. Year three was you, me, Son and friends (Warren’s first go at it). That was a crushing loss to the Ravens.

        Forget who won the official Fest in Tampa that year, but know we lost the next year too. Was it the Raven’s again?

  55. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    Never mind, it was 2. We appear to be 2-2 in Fests

  56. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

    I feel like I skipped 1
    Tenn was the rookie year and that was year 2
    you are right about Wash
    Last year was Houston

    but there may have been 1 or 2 more
    I think Green Bay was one
    actaully now I remember riding with Brian with Green Bay fans so – it was Green Bay and you missed that one Mike

    but I think there may have been another fest

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

    That was a very special moment in Baseball and I will have to say Cespedes is the man!
    Sorry about how all our guys jumped over the rail when it was over but that was what Jose always did after a walk off or extras, first one over with Water bottle in hand and two more in his pockets

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

      I have to say Howie, as crazy as it may sound due to the fact that we’re chasing a playoff spot, I was willing to concede that game to the Marlins, they needed that win more than we did. Like I said in my post to you before the game, they might go out and win it for Jose, and that in and of itself would be very therapeutic to those guys. I was glad they won, even though it may have hurt us. Life is more important than sport in that situation.
