NFL Week 3 – Game 2, MIA vs NYJ

The Dolphins travel to New Jersey to take on their hated rivals the New York Jets this Sunday.  The Jets, already 0-2, losing to the Bills in Week 1, and then last week, losing to the Raiders, in what was a more competitive game than I ever expected, at least in the 1st half.  2 teams that appear to be going in different directions.  The NY Jets seem to be working their way to the top of the draft board, in order to secure the chance to get themselves a franchise QB, while the Dolphins, who were in the playoffs last season at 10-6, look to get back to the playoffs, and build on last season’s success.

It has been a wacky few days for the Miami Dolphins.  Starting OLB Lawrence Timmons went missing before the game Sunday, which forced the Dolphins to move rookie OLB Chase Daniels in to the starting lineup.  Daniels barely played, seeing only 13 total snaps, as the Dolphins defense was in the nickel most of the game against the Chargers.  As of yesterday, the Dolphins have suspended Lawrence Timmons indefinitely, but apparently, the max allowable suspension according to the league is 4 weeks.  In the meantime, the Dolphins continue to surge forward, acquiring former 2015 1st RD pick LB Stephone Anthony from the Saints in exchange for a 2018 5th RD draft pick.  Anthony did not play either of the first 2 games with New Orleans as he’s dealing with a high ankle sprain that he hasn’t fully recovered from.

The thing that I admire about our front office is that they haven’t panicked, they have a setback, and they address it in a responsible manner.  We lost Ryan Tannehill to injury, they quickly formed a plan, and brought in QB Jay Cutler, out of retirement, to be our starting QB.  No hesitation, and no going off the deep end.  Cutler is under contract for this year, and then they can see what happens, and work it from there.  Now we lost our starting LB, and they once again acted quickly, and brought in another player, a player with an awesome physical skillset, but also a player that has struggled with the mental portion of the game, but is still on his rookie contract.  Whether Anthony is physically ready to play now, none of us know.  How long it will take him to mentally be ready to play for us, again, we don’t know.  The point is, we’re not giving up on this season, and I like seeing that.

Alright, let’s get back to this weeks game, against the New York Jets.  The Jets still have some impressive pieces on defense even after jettisoning one of their stars,  DL Sheldon Richardson.  The 3-4 front is still formidable, with DE’s Leonard Williams and Muhammad Wilkerson bookending NT Steve McLendon.  Although they cut David Harris, they still have some talent in their LB corps, with Josh Martin, Darron Lee, Demario Davis and Jordan Jenkins.  They also have 2 capable corners in Buster Skrine and Morris Claiborne, and of course, the 2 rookie safeties that were both drafted high by the Jets, SS Jamal Adams 1st RD (6th overall, and Marcus Maye, 2nd RD (39th overall).  There is definitely some good young talent on this defense, but on the other side of the ball, it is pretty ugly.

Josh McCown is the starting QB at the moment, and while he’s relatively competent, he’s a journeyman QB who has had limited success in the NFL, his best campaign was in 2013 where he took over for an injured Jay Cutler (yeah, THAT Jay Cutler), and posted a 3-2 record with 13 TD’s and only 1 INT.  Since then, with TB, CLE , and now the NYJ, he’s thrown 31 TD’s and 27 INT’s,  His backfield of Matt Forte and Bilal Powell was pretty good last year, but Forte is now 31, and we know most RB’s tend to really fall off once they reach 30, so I don’t expect all that much trouble from Matt Forte.  Bilal Powell is a very good receiver out of the backfield, and has burned us on numerous occasions.  Both backs have good hands, but Powell has the speed to beat LB’s around the edge and over the middle.  At widout, the Jets have WR Robbie Anderson (Who?) and newly acquired former Seahawks veteran WR Jermaine Kearse.  Kearse has quickly become one of McCown’s favorite targets, and rightfully so.  Kearse has the only 2 receiving TD’s for the Jets.

It will be interesting to see who defends Devante Parker, is it the 5’9″ Buster Skrine, or the 5’11” Morris Claiborne?  Either one will have his hands full with Parker, who has shown that he wants every pass thrown in his vicinity, and will get it!  I expect a similar approach to the game as last week, run the ball as much as we can as long as we’re having success, but in the passing game, we might just try to exploit the young safeties and smaller CB’s deep, and take a few more shots than we did last week.  I also expect Julius Thomas to get a little more involved in the game this week.  I’m thinking we’ll get a good lead, and then cruise in this one.

I’m going MIA 30 – NYJ 13

Go DOLPHINS! Zero in!

M13 on your question about getting a raise going from the PS to 53. I thought it was a joke. Of course guys get a raise to the league min., unless of course they were all ready making that, but I don’t think anyone is on any PS.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I think the discussion was about how you replace someone, if you don’t have cap space. The salary cap is on going for the top 53 players, so if say an LB making $5M gets hurt and they cut him, whatever his cap figure was after settlement stays on the books, then you replace him…

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

…with someone making $450K, the $450K doesn’t go against the salary cap, just the top 53. I’m going to repeat this, because I’ve said it many times and people can’t seem to grasp that simple concept. The salary cap is for the top 53 contracts, and you could, because of injury or cut, have 60 guys on contract or more.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Someone responded yesterday our OFFICIAL current cap figure. Right away I call BS, because very few seem to grasp the top 53 concept in the media or on these cap sites.

The NFL is a business, I understand that Timmons screwed up however to suspend him indefinitely hurts the team, he should be punished monetarily, wins and losses are what matters, you should field the strongest team possible, suspending Timmons hurts this team.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Rob – I don’t think this was a business decision in the least. It’s an accountability decision. Unless we go the route where we try to recoup as much $$$ as we can on his contract. I don’t think we’re going to do that, I think Gase is showing the TEAM and its players come first, and every man on this team has a responsibility to his teammates. Accountability. I think Timmons will be given another chance, and will play in a couple of weeks, maybe even next week, but definitely not this week. It sends a good message to all the players, that the other 52 guys on the roster all count on you.

  10. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Stephone Anthony practiced. So the ankle sprain no longer a concern. Comes with an attitude, but thats good for a guy you want to be a hitter.

“I don’t think you can be good at this game if you don’t carry a little bit of a chip on your shoulder. This is about me and my new opportunity. I’m excited. What those guys have going on, it’s now the Saints’ problem.”

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t excited about getting Anthony. Sure, he has warts, but man, that kid has physical talent, and I hope we can get him in a position to help us. He’s the type of player that could definitely be a 3 down LB if we can get him to understand his responsibilities in coverage. Hoping for the best for him and our team

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Compared to the LB depth we had last week he’s a welcomed site. We couldn’t do much in coverage last week with what we had at LB.

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

        I’m excited too

Honestly his warts on some one minimal compared to the benefits

I have his cons as (a) regressed last year; (b) saints defense wasn’t good

a 5th rounder in ’18, given those downsides, is nothing

I think adding talent like his to our defense might be a difference maker for us.
I’ve been concerned about the LB unit for years, as I was concerned about the WR unit for years – an d we did a 180 on the WR unit. I’m thinking this, as well as a healthy McMillan in ’18, is a part of doing a 180 for our LB unit in the foreseeable future

We might not see the benefits right away

I am also happy to learn that Timmons may be back eventually
The LB unit actually might look pretty good by December, it looked bleak a couple of days ago for me

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Yeah, I know D said Anthony has a ways to go to even be as good Chase Daniels, but I don’t agree with that. Anthony has played on a big stage his entire college career, facing top competition, and succeeded. He also succeeded his first season playing MLB for the Saints. Some players move to another position and do well, others don’t. The Saints were pretty awful on defense, and they clearly didn’t think Anthony was a fit there for what they wanted to do, which is a negative on Anthony. There’s a reason why he’s available, but there’s also a reason why we were interested in him, and acquired him. We obviously think he’s an upgrade, and I figure we also think we can correct some of his issues.

  11. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Someone said only the top 50 or 51 contracts count vs. the salary cap. I think the confusion is because there is a difference between season and off season.
    >>>>
Who falls under the Salary Cap?

Answer: The “Team Salary” falls under the Salary Cap. Team salary includes the amount a team must pay its current or former players under their player contracts. Notice emphasis on the word PLAYERS. The salary cap does not apply to coaches, assistants, trainers, and other personnel. Only the top 51 player salaries for a team count against the salary cap in the offseason. (Outstanding tenders apply.) During the season, all player salaries count toward the salary cap.

    per http://www.askthecommish.com/SalaryCap/Faq.aspx

I am assuming that guy is correct.

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I also assume this means Osweiler’s money is counted against Cleveland’s cap, minus the little bit Elway is paying him.

      For example.

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I definitely think the kicker saw that and kinda flinched. Any flinch has dire consequences from 44 yds out. It’s just like the tiniest yip in a putting stroke in golf always results in a miss on long putts, because the distance amplifies the error.

Koo being a rookie would flinch. A vet might say, f it … if he blocks it, it’s not on me, so I’ll just swing the leg the right way.

What made it even worse for the kid is that he got one blocked the previous week so he was gunshy. Rizzi put on a max rush from the edge and tall guys in the middle. This kind of thing is why Rizzi’s STs are so good. Subtle but still a contribution to the victory.

  15. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

    Mike

In terms of the saints on D
Look, if you put a good athletic LB on a defense that is built to keep up with a high scoring offense by creating turnovers – bad I ally you are just asking him to run around a lot a make a few plays

There will be a learning curve for Anthony, but they already have him ready to play this week

I think he migh start as soon as week 3. Let’s see how he performs in a defense that is on the field a lot less than the saints are

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

No question, and like Cutler, he will be playing with significantly better talent here than he had in NO. No reason not to be excited about him. I get why D is tempering his enthusiasm, but I’m stoked that we have another talented LB. If we can get Anthiny up to speed, next year we’ll have Raekwon back, Kiko, Timmons and Anthony. What was a negative can become a real positive.

  16. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

What I do agree with D is that everything counts for Anthony, his somewhat successful 1st season, and his very disappointing 2nd season. It’s all part of his resume, so now he has to prove that his 2nd season was an aberration

  17. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Gase said Ja’Wuan James played his best game since he’s been here against the Chargers.

  18. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

It’s funny – Piggy posted the link to my article of the 2015 LB’s yesterday, and I saw Stephone Anthony was rated at 5.44. Then right before the draft, they (NFL.com) redo the draft grades, and he was rated at 5.78. He really improved a lot doing absolutely nothing between the combine and the draft. 🙂

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Honestly he shot up the draft boards right before the draft
      I think he was a late 2nd/early 3rd rounder

then all of the sudden he is the late 1st

I think that is part of the reason what his career has been rocky so far

Showcasing him to get him primed for the trade. He’s as good as gone. This team has too much talent on it at this time to waste because we’ve got spots that need to be filled, like we did at LB, and the brass knows it. You’ve been calling for Anthony for some time: you got your wish! And I DO believe he’ll help us greatly.

I wouldn’t ban you, but how bout fucking off by yourself, and don’t comment here anymore. Do us all a favor, we don’t really need you here, and you certainly don’t need us, so it’s a mutual thing. Like Nike, – “Just do it!”

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Disagreed, my man. Prof Lou knows football and he’s sticking around for a reason… despite “Douchebag-Gate”. Forgive and forget… that’s the only way to live.

I think GDP would concur here, and I hope he’s doing alright.

The Dolphins had four changes on their second injury report of the week, including wide receiver Jarvis Landry (knee) practicing on a limited basis after not working Wednesday.

Running back Damien Williams (rib) was a full participant after being limited Wednesday; wide receiver DeVante Parker (ankle) and center Mike Pouncey (hip) both did not practice after being limited Wednesday. Pouncey’s absence, though, maintained his day-on, day-off routine.

Running back Jay Ajayi (knee), defensive tackle Jordan Phillips (ankle) and linebacker Rey Maualuga (hamstring) all did not practice for a second consecutive day.

Frankly, I couldn’t give a flying fuck what Lou brings as far as football knowledge, you want to read his shit, read it on twitter. His trolling behavior is bullshit, and you know what, when you say things, they have ramifications. He comes here spewing his garbage, claims he doesn’t read comments here, so what his purpose other to annoy the douchebags that post here? NO PURPOSE. M, you want to read Lou, read it on twitter, and if you want to forgive, forgive him all you like. I’m sick and tired of his act here.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

The funny thing is, you say forgive, he never once apologized to any of us after running like a little girl to berate the people here. Has he unblocked you from twitter yet? Oh the horror!

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

What started all of this was when I called him out on some college prospect he was talking up. I never heard of the guy, so I looked him up and the article said the same thing Lou was saying. Then someone else here posted something laughing about Lou doing it, then he left.

What Harris says is true of the NFL in general, but think it particularly true of a team coached by Adam Gase.

” This isn’t like college where you can go in and you have a game plan. You have to mix it up mid-game. ‘I think that’s probably the biggest ‘welcome to the NFL,’ that you were switching up what you had been studying all week because you’ve seen something different. Being able to adjust on the fly.”

I’m sure those kids will never forget their first action in a real NFL game. I bet when Chase Allen (Daniels, Manhattan, Chevy) made that tackle on the first play, he must have been super excited.

I was listening to the Boomer Show in the morning on WFAN in NY, and they were saying they wouldn’t be surprised if there were more Dolphins fans than Jets fans at Met Life this Sunday. Obviously they were exaggerating, but I know Dolfans NYC has at least 1000 people going, plus whatever other Dolphins fans that attend

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Gase on Suh last Sunday….seems that makes it easier on whatever LBs are back there.

You never know if Cutlers Rental status improves due to this years success, if it does Tannehill may be on the trading block

  89. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Cutler has played one game. Tannehill is recovering from a knee injury. Do you think it’s easy to trade a QB coming off a season ending knee injury with his contract? Is this really a topic that makes much sense in September 2017 one game in? That’s right up there with discussing who our 1st rd pick might be in 2018. LOL

ORob, I’m not trying to attack you or anything, you’re not the first to bring this up. People were saying this the moment we signed Cutler.

  90. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I think Tannehill is the QB next year, but a very good season from Cutler may jeopardize that.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

He’s not in anyformal penalty box
He can post whenever he wants as far as I am concerned

Some of the biggest critics here have said worse about this blog on other blogs and on Twitter and we allow them to post.

I just think some are giving him a hard time bc they feel like it was directed at them. But it ought to be out of their system by now.

There is no organized effort to keep him from posting. I would not favor doing that to him. But I’m not going to tell grown men and women how to treat each other.

I agree with your post though, we have all said and posted dumb shit before and I am over it regarding Lou, so I have no interest in confronting him myself

For bonus points, who was traded for each of those items and why…..
