Gameday – Week 9, Raiders @ Dolphins

Screenshot-2017-11-5 Watch Oakland Raiders vs Miami Dolphins [11 05 2017] - NFL com

As we can all gather, those stats up there don’t mean an awful lot, because today Dolphins fans, we will see a glimpse of what out NEW offense will be, without Jay Ajayi.  Who will get the heavy workload, Drake or Williams?  Will it be a RB by committee approach instead, with Drake, Williams, Perry and Smith?  It’s not really important how they go about it, as long as it works, and our running game is effective.  Like I said in my game preview, I wouldn’t be surprised to see us use our backs much like the Falcons do, with Drake as Devonta Freeman, and Williams as Tevin Coleman.

Cutler is back with his cracked ribs, and we have to do a damn good job of protecting him, or the rest of the season will be Matt Moore and David Fales.  Ted Larsen will be active for this game, but LG Jesse Davis will get the start.

Enjoy the game, and all the other NFL games today as we’re the Headliner tonight.  I hope you remembered to set your clock back, or else you may be a little early for the start of today’s games.

GO DOLPHINS!

    Interesting thoughts Mike.
I think we want Philly to beat Denver to help us with the wild card. Also we want Jax to beat Cincy so they can win their division since we don’t play them and we hold the tie-breaker over Tennessee.

Buffalo already helped us by losing to jete so if Tennessee can beat Baltimore that would help us also since we DON’T hold the tie-breaker with the Ravens. I hope the Ravens will self-destruct more times than we do.

I’m assuming Cincy, Indy, jests, and LAC are seriously flawed and not going to catch us, and Houston will probably fade badly after losing Deshaun.

That leaves Oakland, a game we absolutely must win tonight, and Buffalo, with whom we must split at worst, as our rivals for Wild Card spots.

If Buffalo and us can put some loses on NE this division could be up for grabs.
We gotta start winning of course.

    Dolphins will win tonight!

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I dig the positive thinking. I think we will too. Oakland is really screwed if they lose, so i think they will be all in, but if we can get any kind of protection for Cutler, we should eat up their secondary

  5. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

While interested in what we will be doing on O tonight, figure the key player on that side is Gase. Remember last season when Albert begged “just let us run” and it worked. Our young coach made pretty clear that he didn’t like it going against what he did have in mind….but was real hard for him to argue after the two hundred yard Ajayi games.

Now he sent Ajayi away for not keeping with his plays and Gase is obviously going to re-scheme. And all his O pieces are in place with Parker back. Big game for Drake and Williams…..but might be even bigger for our young coach.

    • olddolphan's avatar olddolphan says:

YOUNG STANGER: I’m afraid ANOTHER BLOW-OUT LOSS will not be the “beginning of the end” but rather “the continuing of the end” for Gase. This saddens me because I REALLY wanted this guy to be successful!!

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

We are still 4-3 and made the playoffs last year for the first time in a while. So think he has been successful, even if some tarnish has been taken of the offensive guru part of it. Still overall my favorite HC since Shula. We’ll just have to see what happens…..but think he is for sure good till end of the season. And the D is so much better this year, which goes to him as a HC too.

I see Parker is listed as questionable

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Yeah, he’s been questionable the last couple of weeks, he didn’t play last week obviously, but he practiced in full on Friday which is usually a good sign. I really hope he’s good to go

  7. BailBondMike's avatar BailBondMike says:

Since you peeps are waking up, I will ask if anyone knows what picks we have next year now?
    1,2,3,4,4,6,7???
How bout them Irish!! They sat a bunch of people in the 4th qtr to rest up for their game next week at Miami so score is closer than the game really was.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

That’s correct BBM, we traded our 2017 7th RD with the Bucs for their 2018 7th RD, we got the extra 4th for Ajayi, and we traded our 5th for Stephone Anthony to the Saints

  8. 49ers will have them a pick that would land them one of the top qb’s in the next draft but they trade for Jimmy G. Their season is shot & Jimmy G ain’t going to get them anywhere this year. Is this an indication of how they feel about the qb class?

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I do think they and lots of others have lost a lot of respect for this QB class , as all of them seem to be having much less star-quality success than was predicted.

Darnold? meh. That guy from Wyoming was it? Whatever happened to him? Mayfield? Would you trust that guy with your franchise? Barrett? not really a NFL QB. The guy at Memphis is even wilder. The UCLA guy has faded right off the map.

That leaves the guys from Syracuse and OK State. Are those guys 1st rounders?
Is the Penn State guy even a 2nd rounder?

      Am i missing someone?

      • Ken's avatar Ken says:

It is not how these guys are doing during the season but rather how they and more particularly their skill set projects at the next level. This group has great potential based on that test. Also check out Thorson at Nortwestern I think his stock will rise dramatically in the pre draft process

      • I agree with Mayfield. I don’t know if I’d want to hand that guy a big check because he scares the shit out of me. Is he talented? Definitely. But, you better do your homework with this kid because there’s some character concerns there.

I though Allen was the shit at first but the more I watch of him the more he’s changed my mind. Way too erratic.

Big 12 qb’s don’t do a lot for me in general because they don’t play defense in the Big 12. Yesterdays’ game was a perfect example. Over 100 pts scored and Mayfield & Rudolph were exchanging punches all game like it was a prize fight.

So, the best bet may be to go with a guy a little later you can develop for a year or two like Benkert or Woodside and be happy with it.

  9. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

We have to play smart AND loose, which apparently is hard for us to do. We can’t get all tense and freeze up, but we do have to stay tight and wired on Defense. Again, that is hard, but we can do it.

If we make a lot of little mistakes or a couple of huge ones, we’ll lose.

SEC is not all that dominant anymore, which I am glad to see. Out of the FBS conference power rankings the SEC is #4 behind Big 12, ACC and Big 10 respectively. Also only graded 2 points higher than the PAC 12. Georgia and Alabama are ranked #36 and #64 respectively in strength of schedule as opposed to Clemson and ND who are ranked #9 and #10 respectively in SOS. Things could really shake up at the top next weekend as Alabama plays at Miss State, Georgia plays at Auburn and ND plays at UM.

WELL THE LITTLE TEN is down to ONE candidate for college football’s “Final Four,”–the badgers of Wisconsin. Michigan, Michigan State, Penn State and Ohio State all have two losses and have virtually NO CHANCE at the title. Meanwhile, Wisconsin is undefeated and still in the hunt!
    ——————
ALSO, it would seem that the PAC-12 also lacks a serious Final Four contender, with 12th ranked Washington Huskies their lone longshot contender. THAT SAID, there’s still plenty of college football to be played. I believe the loser of Notre Dame @ Miami will fall from serious contention this coming Saturday night at Hard Head Stadium. It out to be a dilly!
    —————–
SON-OF-A-SON—your UCF Knights were good enough to maintain their undefeated record with a win at SMU. The final game of the regular season, USF @ UCF, will be HUUUUUGE!!
    —————–
LAST TIME I DID NOT make a prediction in the Dolphins game, they won (over the Jets). –SO, no prediction this week, either.
    —————–
Is it just me, or did BOTH of those QB’s in the “BEDLAM” game look a lot better than Cutler?

  15. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

    I forgot about that trade with the Bucs in the 7th rd last year. So we have 1, 2, 3, 4, 4, 6, 7, 7 in 2018.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

So we are set up better than the normal slate for next draft. What we won’t have is a lot of cap money, but then a lot of that went to guys like Jones and TJ….and not a lot of major guys coming up other than Landry.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Maxwell and Cutler will open up $20M and there could be some other relief with some guys not coming back. I don’t think the FO wants to go FA hunting for big number guys anyway.

      • I hope they don’t go shopping. Just like any idiot can raise taxes to balance a budget, any idiot GM can spend money on big name FA’s rather than showing he’s got the stuff it takes to properly evaluate talent and DRAFT the players the team needs to get good.

I wonder how high we can get if we package everything after he 3rd round (4, 4, 4, 6, 7 and 7)?

      Or some of those picks

I’m not a huge fan of multiple day 3 picks
When you do that a lot of players inevitably get cut and they barely had a chance to prove themselves

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

More likely you use some of those to move up in other rounds, not packaging them all for one pick.

ok so we got the help we needed in that Buffalo, Baltimore, and Houston lost and Jax won, which helps set up the other divisions and wild card teams in the best way we could hope for given the circumstances at this point.
Now if we can just beat Oaktown, we’ll be in better shape for a playoff run.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

We need to win a bulk of our games and it will fall in place. If we don’t win it doesn’t matter what other teams do. 9-7 could make the playoffs in the AFC this year. More than one team too.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

We need to look better on offense, be more consistent. We can’t be so damn uneven, and look so clueless for full halves of football games. That shit needs to end!

  43. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Lou – I watched more of that game than any other game today. Corey Clement looked good, Wendell Smallwood looked good, that Eagles offense has everyone off balance. I don’t think it matters much who is in the backfield for the Eagles right now, that offense is humming!

Yeah, like any of that’s true.

    -******

I think it’s true that Gase and Ajayi butted heads

Whether or not that’s a justifiable reason to trade him is another story

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

And justifiable in this situation is also opinion based. Gase obviously was tired of dealing with him. He made a choice. The End!

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I still say let’s see what happens if Ajayi starts demanding 88% of the carries. And by demanding, I mean pouting, yelling at coaches on the sidelines, and bitching to teammates even after a victory.

    • Again, you play a guy (start him) for the first 7 weeks of the season, yet, he’s not doing his job. He’s not studying like you want him to, he’s not listening to you, he’s trying to hit home runs when he gets the ball instead of getting the yards he could get by running the ball and hitting the hole he should, he’s storming out of meetings and you’re constantly butting heads with the guy but you never send him a message that his actions will NOT be tolerated.

Instead, you let it go until one day you’ve had enough and just get rid of him. Yeah, that makes all the sense in the world. Because it didn’t happen.

      • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I think it did happen. I think Gase, as not only a first time HC, but also as a very young guy, did not know what to do about it since obviously we went on a great run last year with Gase letting Ajayi call the shots.

We so needed that playoff run as a franchise, that Gase had to hold his nose at some of the stinkin’ behavior of a very young RB.

Gase is also a bit of a hothead himself, and yet he is also known as a players’ coach and a well – liked, one of the guys type. That is a dangerous combination for a HC, because it makes some guys think you are weak, because you are laughing and going along with shit, and then the only way to fix the shit is with a sledgehammer.

        Gase will learn from this.
        I hope.

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

He benched him in game 1 last season
THere was 1 visible sideline episode his year
I tend to think Gase had enough

But fwiw I don’t know why he just didn’t bench him instead

  46. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

It drwould Es me crazy to see both the Rams and Eagles hitting e wry thing they do

But teams get on rolls in this league

Most of the NFL teams this year aren’t vey impressive

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

The overall play in the league has been sub par with the exception of a few teams. It really is a wide open parity league for many teams to make the playoffs.

  47. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

We all know here, if the Dolphins continue to struggle on offense, the trade will be a nightmare for Gase, but we also know if the offense gets going, and scores points, and both or either Drake or Williams run well, no one will be talking about Ajayi, or Gase trading him away. It’s pretty much that simple.

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

yep … and that happy scenario could ensue.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I also believe this team has their eye on 2018. The way we’re set up now has not been screaming going deep in the playoffs and we know this so does the team. Making the playoffs would be a great achievement this year.

However, I hope we take off and shock us all the opposite of what we’ve been seeing, especially on offense. 🙂

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Right with you. I’m hoping that Ajayi is real happy with the rest of the season and so are Drake, Williams, Gase and all of us. Pretty sure all the guys in the locker room feel the same way.

  48. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Really don’t like it when we play on Sunday nights. Hard not to watch the games before, especially with FF going on. Sorta takes the excitement edge off watching by the time the Phins show up. Least on Thursdays and Mondays when we play it is still the first one you watch.

Even the Great Don Shula had issues with RBs.
If I remember correctly, Csonka abandoned the team for a little quick cash
right after the dynasty was built.
And Darth Bellicheat has had to cut Blount twice. Even Tomlin had to cut Blount.
Didn’t Blunt also flame out in Tampa?

  50. Tim,
I know you keep saying it’s done with and just move on but I think what a lot of Phins fans want to do here is be in denial over the situation and try to rationalize instead of admitting the Dolphins are a shit show like they’ve been and it’s not getting any better.

We all hoped we had our new HC for the next 10 years and the organization was going in the right direction but it doesn’t look like that’s the case. Again. It’s one thing to be 4-3 if you’re losing close games but when your 3 losses are blowouts and you’re offense is averaging 13 ppg, it says more about the team being lucky at this point than it does about them being good.

And, like I said before, I just hope we don’t start moving the ball on offense and give the team a false sense of security we’re not as bad off on offense as we looked and then they don’t put the resources into that side of the ball come FA and the draft.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

“instead of admitting the Dolphins are a shit show like they’ve been and it’s not getting any better.”

10-6 last year and made the playoffs for the first time in years. 4-3 so far this year and D is much improved. The glass can be half full as well.

      • again, we’ve been blown out in our 3 losses and the O is only scoring 13 ppg. Things don’t magically just turn around for an offense; especially when nothing has changed other than the fact you’ve just traded your best offensive weapon. but, yeah, I could see things get better.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

And that would go back to the glass half empty part. Am quite aware of what has happened with the team….did you think I was not? Just wondering where the guy how wrote an article entitled “Miami Dolphins Continue To Build Championship Caliber Team” in Sept is. But your right to change your mind as well.

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Oh I think they definitely had planned on making the 2018 draft and FA all about the offense. I know we don’t have much money, but still.

Last off-season we absolutely had to fix the defense. We had to get some tacklers.

This year we should be able to expend some resources on a young hot TE and 2 good solid OGs.

All the while watching for the best RB we can find that fits the system that Gase wants to run.

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

The OL is the #1 priority
But now I think qb (possibility a backup or some one who will at least sit a year ) and RB are both options

      • we don’t need to use an early pick on a rb. too much talent there in the draft to do that but we definitely MUST go after a qb who can compete with Tannehill for the starting qb position. We’ve got competition in other areas and there’s no reason to not have competition at qb; especially when the one we’ve got hasn’t proven enough to show he deserves to just be penciled in before the season starts.

  51. Here’s my question. When we had success running the ball last season we had Young in there as an extra blocker and Gray was in there as well. We got away from that. Why?

  52. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Lou I think Tannehill looks pretty good right about now.
In his absence we are anemic on offense.
I think we must get better guards, two of them, depending on how Larsen looks from here on out.

We also must get younger and faster at TE. That’s rounds 1-3 in my mind.
Then a couple RBs in the 4th would be good, especially one who is a Punt Returner.
    After that, BPA.
Unless more holes crop up somewhere.

    • that’s the whole problem. the offense looks like shit so now it’s got everyone thinking it’s because Tannehill isn’t in there so now we’re going to be stuck with him at least another year and suffer thru another season of the failed Ryan Tannehill experiment.

The Misi Experiment should have ended long before it did but people kept saying “he’s solid”. Nothing wrong with Misi. Now, Misi isn’t in there and our LB play is definitely improved.

It’s kind of short-sighted to think we can’t improve the qb play on this team; especially when you see all these young qb’s being chosen every year and making it happen with their teams and we have to HOPE things get better with Tannehill because we just know he could be good if we just give him another shot.

      • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Comparing the Misi situation and the Tannehill situation is collossally inept.
Misi is a mere blip in the league. Most fans outside of Miami have never even heard of Misi. His constant injured state ruined his career.

      • it doesn’t matter that there’s not a lot of people who know Misi compared to Tannehill. Point is, tannehill was a 3rd rd qb drafted in the 1st rd and the only reason he’s been given as many chances as he has is because he was taken in the first rd and the team doesn’t want to “waste” a first rd pick.

they’d rather stick with him and continue to lose games and be mediocre and do fans an injustice than go get a guy like the Eagles did and put it to rest.

The Seahawks get 2 points in the entire first half.
See any parallels between offensive production and OL quality?

    • if that were true in Tannehill’s case I’d say you were correct. But, when you have a qb who was responsible for more than half of his own sacks during 2015 season and killed a lot of our drives, I’d say otherwise.

      • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

whew Lou how about a little compromise in at least one of your opinions , maybe say, once a month or so, just for some variety?
We’ve got a lot of expertise on this blog. We can’t all be wrong 100% of the time.

I just cited several highly apropos examples of a well-known fact of football in general and the Dolphins in particular.

Poor O- line play makes QBs injured and their stats suck. See David Carr.

At least you could give me a “hey man I hear ya” kinda thing while refusing to budge a millimeter on any of your cherished opinions.

I mean, you make good points.
But ummm so do other people, ya know.

      • yeah, but you’re always sticking it 100% on the offensive line and that’s just not the case in Tannehill’s situation. it just boggles the mind that people just continue to defend him instead of admitting we made a mistake in wasting a first rd pick on the guy and moving on.

Philly trade for Bradford and then signed him to a 2 yr $36M contract in ’16. The same year they drafted Wentz. Then, they traded him to Minnesota for their ’17 first rd pick. Then they traded up with us in the draft and then moved up to get Wentz.

Again, boggles the mind that so many think that there’s nothing better out there than Tannehill, yet teams continue to draft qb’s who ARE better than Tannehill while this team just keeps dicking around with him.

      • yes, poor offensive line play can get a qb killed. yes, poor offensive line play can get him injured and have an effect on him being able to do his job.

but, the offensive line hasn’t played poorly EVERY single snap of Tannehill’s career and saying Miami’s o-line has played poorly does not absolve Tannehill of his own sins.

It’s like waking up every morning saying I wish that didn’t happen yesterday. But it did. You move on.

We still have 9 undecided games to play. We were bad on offense with Ajayi. The state of this team the rest of this season and leading into next year, is about more than any one player.

      • the big danger here would be if this team’s offense were to show enough signs of life that the brass looks at the situation as not being as dire as it really is and blowing off the offensive help in FA and the draft.

And, you KNOW, that’s something that can definitely happen.

  55. ElephantRider's avatar ElephantRider says:

Week 9 of season. RT17 hasn’t played 1 snap. But hey, let’s continue this tired old narrative.
Again, I’ll defer to the coach.

    • The Tannehill narrative is a metaphor of all the things that have happened and continue to happen with this team. Every year we sit and watch someone tear our team apart and we just live thru it. True, like Tim says, as fans there’s nothing we can do about it so we just have to hope for the best.

But, there’s going to come a point in time and it’s going to happen sooner rather than later when I’m going to be tired of wasting may time being a fan of a team that just doesn’t give a shit or has people in charge who aren’t capable of doing their jobs.

If you shopped at a retailer that just kept screwing things up almost every time you dealt with them but sometimes did things right there’d probably be a point where you’d seek out another retailer in the same line of business to deal with.

No reason that can’t apply to favorite sports teams because, NO, the don’t deserve our loyalty if they don’t care what kind of product they put on the field.

      • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

What tiny particle of evidence do you have that Gase doesn’t care? Or Tannenbaum. Or the owner. These men are all highly competitive, hard-working, and proud.

I don’t see a slacker in the bunch.

You can say this and that negative about their skill in selecting, coaching, or developing players, but you cannot factually say they don’t care or don’t try.

  58. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Naples, teams with OL problems struggle and then everyone rates QBs and running games. More than half the league have questionable to bad O-lines. Not counting poor blocking from backs and TEs.

The brand of football overall is not good in the NFL. It’s not the tough game I remember. And I’m not talking about bad hits and mugging guys, just a more prepared and hard fought brand of football.

I saw this coming from the college level the last decade and it’s here. That’s where the NFL recruits from. No fullbacks anymore have been replaced by spread, pick/screens and carefree offense. No defense anymore. Not allowed. The physical aspect being taken out from a game standpoint has lowered the level of play.

But this is just what I’m seeing and my opinion. 😉

    • Absolutely right. The NFL game is nowhere near what it’s been in the past and the play, overall, is definitely not as good as it’s been. In fact, I’d say the level of play you see in college this season is extremely disappointing. It seems like the level of talent has diminished at the college level rather than staying constant or get better.

And, yes, the blocking schemes on the college offenses have made it tough to get quality offensive linemen anymore at the pro level. They just aren’t ready to play the game or aren’t as close to ready as they were in the past. There’s a major shortage of quality offensive linemen. O-line coaches really need to work hard to get these guys up to where they need them to be.

    Lou

If you were talking about players….then maybe that’s why Ajayi is gone.

    • It was a lazy way to solve an issue. A coach doesn’t want to do his job so he takes the easy way out and says, “I can’t deal with this guy. Get him out of here”.

      • ElephantRider's avatar ElephantRider says:

That’s your opinion. Mine doesn’t have the word last when talking about Gase

      • Think about this for a second. Let’s look at this from a common sense point of view. First, we only spent a fifth on Ajayi so it didn’t cost us a lot to get him.

Second, he had a pro bowl year for us last season.

Third, he was still young, Just 24 years of age. So, it’s not like he was at the end of his career where, if we were to get rid of him, it wasn’t going to matter much.

Fourh, he was our biggest weapon on the offensive side of the ball. Without Ajayi, our offense had difficulty moving the ball.

Fifth, If he was being as bad a distraction as he was or getting under Gase’s skin as much as he was then Gase could have sat him for a game, or more, just like when he left him home before the Seattle game.

Sixth, you take the fact that he was a pro bowl player last season, his age and the fact that he’s still got a lot of play left in him and you don’t just throw that aside. You also take into consideration as a head coach that your play calling and the offensive line play has a lot to do with his struggles running the ball and being effective. When you see him run the ball, when he had the opportunity, he ran hard. He wasn’t out there being lazy.

So, when a coach does what Gase did in this situation he was being lazy rather than doing what he needed to do to hang on to him. Dez Bryant was a hell of a lot more of a challenge in Dallas and he’s still there. Why is Ajayi gone. Because Gase took the easy way out.

    • ElephantRider's avatar ElephantRider says:

Of course he is. He’s only been back at practice for a few days.

      • so what? other teams don’t give a shit. they throw guys into the fray and those guys do just fine. we hold guys back all the time. all the time.

other teams draft guys in the first rd and have them out there day one making an impact. four years later we say, “we think he’s finally ready”

  70. ElephantRider's avatar ElephantRider says:

Fact is NONE of us know what was going on in locker room.
If Gase just simply didn’t like him, so be it. He is our so called biggest weapon on the worst offense in the league. That really doesn’t matter then, does it?

  72. ElephantRider's avatar ElephantRider says:

The NFL needs to change the QB slide rule. It is ridiculous. Just get rid of it as it’s causing more chaos then it is protecting anybody. QB wants to run then they are a runner, no special treatment.

Tanny and Gase both said it finally Clicked last year when got injured. By draft time it was determined RT would not need surgery and we needed serious upgrades on DEF , no need to draft qb at this moment as we were happy with QBs on roster…. so bypassed for the greater need .. OL ?? We have tried every year including this one and drafted and sign FA to improve it …lots of different reasons why it has not worked out , add in a Coke fiend of an OL coach and yes ya have a mess. We have talent , need some luck and health to go our way. Then YES KILL THE DRAFT on Offense like we did on DEF last tear. ☀️🌈🍭
