2018 NFL Draft – Safeties

On the defensive side of the ball, I’ve covered the DT’s, the LB’s, and today  I’m going to look at the Safeties.  I’m going to skip DE, we’re pretty loaded at that spot, but that doesn’t mean we won’t take a DE if the right one is in the right spot, but I’m about priorities here.  Personally, I’m not convinced we’re not just fine with what we have at safety, with Reshad Jones and T.J. McDonald.  McDonald missed 8 games due to his suspension, and it makes sense that it took time for him to get acclimated here.  I think McDonald could also be used in the hybrid role of S/LB in passing situations. Whether that works out or not, we’ll have to wait and see.  In the meantime, here’s the 5 guys I’d consider for us at safety.

Derwin James  6’2 215  Florida State

derwin-james-top

James is a big boy at safety, and the top ranked safety in this draft.  James started 2 years at safety for Florida St, missing most of his Sophomore season with a torn meniscus which resulted in a necessary surgery that ended his season after 2 games.  Despite being a DB, James played a fair amount near the LOS, and in his Freshman season, started 12 games,  finishing with 91 tackles (52 solo), 9.5 TFL, 2 FF’s, 2 FR’s and 4.5 sacks.  In his redshirt Sophomore season, James picked up where left off, and totaled 84 tackles (49 solo) with 2 INT’s, (1 for a TD), 5.5 TFL, and 11 passes defensed.  He is expected to be that hybrid S/LB who can cover TE’s, but that remains to be seen.  James tested very well at the combine, running a fast 4.47 40, putting up 21 reps, showing a sick 40″ vertical, and he also has long arms and big hands.  James is team leader, he’s a very hard worker who comes in and studies film on weekends.  He checks off most of the boxes you look for in a player.  James is the highest rated safety on NFL.com at 6.44.  He’s a top 15 pick for sure, and may be in  consideration for us, depending upon who else is also available.

******************************************************************************

Justin Reid  6’1 204  Stanford

NCAA Football: Stanford at Southern California

While James is a hybrid S/LB type of player, Reid could be the FS type of player we can use.  Pairing him with Reshad Jones would be some duo.  The midichlorians are strong with this one, his brother is Pro Bowl safety Eric Reid, formerly of the 49ers.  Reid started his Freshman year in 9 games, and also started every game at S in his Sophomore season.  Reid really came into his own his Junior season, totaling 94 tackles (54 solo), 6.5 TFL, 1 sack, 5 INT’s and 1 FR.  He could be the true back end safety that would allow Jones to help out more in run support.  Reid has the instincts to be a FS, but he’s physical enough to play SS. Reid had an excellent combine, running a 4.4 flat in the 40, putting up 16 reps, showing off a nice 36.5″ vertical, and putting us some very quick 20 YD and 3 cone drill times.  He would be a nice fit here, but the problem is, he’s not worthy of the #11 pick, and I think TE should be our target in RD 2,  and he most likely will be gone late 1st RD anyway.  Rated at

*****************************************************************************

Terrell Edmunds  6’0 217  Virginia Tech

Terrell-Edmunds-GT-game_1510691719241_11021202_ver1.0_640_360

If we don’t take Ferrell’s son Tremaine, maybe we can come away with his other son, Terrell?  Edmunds was a 3 YR starter at VaTech, and his Junior year, he actually started every game at LB.  He finished the season with 101 tackles (52 solo), 4.5 TFL, 4 INT’s, 1 FF and 1 FR.  In his Junior year, Edmunds was switched to S and started 10 games.  He had 61 total tackles (33 solo), 2 INT’s, and 1.5 sacks.  Edmunds is a solid cover guy, and former CB, but his tackling needs a lot of work.  That’s very correctable, he’s a willing tackler, just not an effective one.  His coverage skills and athleticism are going to be what gets him drafted.  Edmunds is a team leader, and he also tested well at the combine, running a 4.47, a truly impressive 41.5″ vertical and 134″ broad jump.  This kid can sky!  Edmunds was rated at 5.54 on NFL.com.

******************************************************************************

Jessie Bates  6’1 200  Wake Forest

Wake Forest v Indiana

Jessie Bates is only a 2 YR starter, so still somewhat raw.  He redshirted his Freshman season, and really put on a show at Wake Forest, totaling 100 tackles (70 solo), 5 INT’s (2 of them for TD’s) and 1 FF.  He’s a very athletic cover man with loose hips and great change of direction ability.  He can cover in the slot, or on the back end, with good instincts, and able to read the QB.  Bates did OK at the combine, he’s not super fast, running a 4.5 40, with a decent 35.5″ vertical.  Bates was rated at 5.84 by NFL.com

*****************************************************************************

Ronnie Harrison  6’3 214  Alabama

636502441424586858-Ronnie-Harrison-Alabama-Mickey-Welsh

Harrison didn’t take the usual route to become a safety as Harrison is actually a former High School QB.  At Alabama, Harrison was a 2 YR starter, only getting limited action as a Freshman.  In his Sophomore season, Harrison had 83 tackles (56 solo) along with 2 INT’s (1 for a TD).  In total, Harrison finished up with 7 total INT’s in his 3 YR stay at Alabama in limited playing time.  He’s got great size and speed, although Harrison did not run at the combine or his pro day.  That may raise a red flag or two, but he’s known to have good speed, so not sure what’s up with that.  Harrison is known to be overly aggressive at times, and tackles too often looking to make the make hit and misses.  He needs to learn proper tackling technique.  He’s very young, only 20, and has work to do, but has a very high ceiling, even Pro Bowl potential.  Harrison is rated at 6.0 on NFL.com

***************************************************************************

So those are the 5, and honestly I went back and forth, erased a couple of times, with some different prospects, such as Godwin Igwebuike, Kyzir White, and Siran Neal.  I’m sure you have a guy I didn’t list, so let’s hear it.

would you trade from 11 down to 25 with tenn take their 25 plus their 1st next year?

    • ocalarob says:

then the following year you take one of the 1st and trade down again gaining equity in the years to come however you still have your 1st in 2019 plus two 2nd rnders and have moved more equity to 2020, this way you’re always getting multiple early rnd players.

I think that’s what Cleveland is doing

      • CavalierKong says:

The Pets did this for like 3-5 years in a row at one point, and every year it bugged me to see them acquiring extra 2nd or 3rd rounders. I would be ok doing this. It really only hurts the 1st year. And another bonus is if you have a year where there is a must have prospect, then you already have extra ammunition in your back pocket.

Outside of the top 4 QBs everyone has what QB would you prefer and in what round?

Luke Falk 3rd round (would prefer 4th, but think he will go higher.) He may be from a prolific system that hasn’t birthed many successful NFL QB’s, but he has the stature and look of an NFL QB, is a hard worker and is very accurate even though most of his throws were short.

  6. Tim Knight says:

My new mock with reasons. LOL

Rd 1 Pick 11 (11) WR Calvin Ridley (want)
Rd 2 Pick 10 (42) TE Mike Gesicki (have to have – a TE like this)
    Rd 3 Pick 9 (73) LB Jerome Baker (need – depth/competition)
    Rd 4a Pick 23 (123) QB Kyle Lauletta (need – depth/competition)
    Rd 4b Pick 31 (131) RB Royce Freeman (need – depth/competition)
    Rd 6 Pick 35 (209) DT James Looney (need – depth/competition)
    Rd 7a Pick 9 (227) RB Chase Edmonds (need – depth/competition)
    Rd 7b Pick 11 (229) G Sam Jones (need – depth/competition)

Anything is possible and I don’t think we’ll draft straight up like this. Just didn’t want to do trades.

As for OL, I already see a possible 9 we could keep and a game day 7. So I kept the streak of drafting OL every year forever but don’t believe we have to make it a priority this year. We’ll add a few more UDFAs to the ones we have and let them compete. That’s how Davis emerged last year.

    LT Tunsil 6-5 320
    LG Sitton 6-3 320
    C Kilgore 6-3 310
    RG Davis 6-6 320
    RT James 6-6 320

    C Kilgore, Brendel, Larsen*
G Sitton, Davis*, Larsen*, Asiata/someone else
    T Tunsil, James, Young, Davis*

Sorry M13, we can’t draft them all. I feel the more impact skill players we have with our current OL is the best way to go this year. We can go heavy OL in the draft next year. Now’s not the time. We have guys who can play.

  7. It’s a bit different when you’re at the end of the 1st and you look at it and say “there’s not much difference between what we could get here and what we could get at the top of the 2nd” and then you trade out of the first with someone looking to get back in to the 1st rd.

However, and I’ll say it again, the best way to create equity is by having quality players on your team and continuing to draft those types of players and then being able to parlay them into picks rather than trading down just for the purpose of accumulating picks.

Are you going to pass up on an Edmunds or Smith for the purpose of obtaining future draft picks and then taking a lesser player? That’s kind of counterproductive.

To answer the question from above about trading down with TEN, it would depend on who’s on the board at the time but we have a very good shot at getting a really good player who will probably make an impact earlier rather than later. Last year we picked in the 20’s and got Harris and he didn’t make much of an impact and that’s what you get when you pick in the 20’s; guys who take a little time.

    • naplesfan2010 says:

I agree with all of the above post.
      Then again…
what if we could trade down and still get both of the Hurst boys, TE and DT.

  8. naplesfan2010 says:

    R1P31 Hurst TE
    R2P10 Michel RB
    R2P11 Hurst DT
    R3P9 Baker LB

    ____________________________________________________________

Once you draft a player it’s tough to get the value that you paid for him back, a pick vs a player is more valuable because it entitles the owner of that pick to choose who he wants.
The thing is if you have a #11 pick today it’s much more valuable than a #11 pick next year, that said you can get that #11 pick next year ; this year at a discount today, that’s where the value is.

Trading down for future picks seems bad this year but when that equity starts to pay off in the future you will end up with much more higher quality picks that are part of your team.

to build you have to sacrifice, and what are you sacrificing? moving down 15 picks? that’s not much of a sacrifice when you look at the future results.

  10. Mike E. says:

Tim – Not a fan of Ridley at all. Much rather take one of the LB’s or even a QB if one is there, but there are WR’s available later that can help us. Get that impact LB, something we’re missing.

  11. wyoming85 says:

    11: R1P11 – One of the 2 LB’s!
    42: R2P10 – BPA = Hurst DT, S, RB, QB
Trade up for the TE you want when you want him
    73: R3P9 – RB, QB
    123: R4P23 — BPA S, , OL
    131: R4P31 – BPA S, CB, OL

  12. wyoming85 says:

    Mike E
I wouldn’t mind giving up the 6th and both 7th’s to move around and get the players we want!
    I’ll take 5

LB, TE, RB, (QB, DL, OL, S)

    • Mike E. says:

Yeah, but MTP ain’t bout dat! He’s about making BIG moves, I mean, he might make a trade like that too, but he’s making moves in the early RD’s, to make that big splash. You’d have to nail his hands to his chair in the early RD’s if you want to tame MTP

      • wyoming85 says:

I can see us moving back from @11 if the LB’s are gone! Get a Mid first and another 2nd.
Using a 4th and a 7th to move back up into the bottom of the 2nd top of the 3rd.

        Shit like that!

    • wyoming85 says:

I guess that would make 6?

  13. sb7mvp says:

Can we trade MTP for a PYT?

    • Mike E. says:

Now I’m going to be singing that song during the draft with M-T-P every time he makes a trade, which should be at least twice in my estimation

  14. D says:

We could trade MTP for PYT, or just OPP would suffice.

  15. wyoming85 says:

  16. D says:

I think a better comparison to Ridley is Cooper, and maybe its because i cant remember what Marvin Harrison was liek coming out of college. Cooper though i remember him pretty well and how he could accelerate though his cuts and create separation with ease. I think Risley lacks a little physicality that Cooper had but he is also faster and i think his after the catch ability is more dynamic than Copper, although its kind of splitting hairs on that one.

    • steveccnv says:

What about Brandin Cooks? They both have speed, good hands and are always open. The Cheats would get the rookie contract and basically the same player.

      • D says:

Cooks is a good bit faster and gets open with straight line speed. Ridley is more about crisp and precise route running.

  17. ocalarob says:

I can’t believe the Rams took on Cooks with 8.5 mil in salary and gave a 1st!

Round 2 Pick 10: Gesicki, Mike, TE, Penn State (A-)
Round 2 Pick 14 (CINN): Hurst, Hayden, TE, South Carolina (B-)
    Round 3 Pick 9: Ragnow, Frank, C/OG, Arkansas (A)
Round 3 Pick 13 (CINN): Penny, Rashaad, RB, San Diego State (A)
Round 4 Pick 23: Bates III, Jessie, FS, Wake Forest (A+)
Round 4 Pick 30: Fatukasi, Folorunso, DT, Connecticut (A)
Round 6 Pick 35: Ferguson, Riley, QB, Memphis (A)
Round 7 Pick 5: Facyson, Brandon, CB, Virginia Tech (A+)
Round 7 Pick 11: McDermott, KC, OT, Miami (FL) (A+)

    ——————————–
Yeah i definitely think he’s a perfect fit for them, maybe even moreso than Cooks.

  21. Mike E. says:

Dolphins are getting a visit with OG Braden Smith. That’s the type of player we can draft, and hopefully in a year or so, he can be ready to step into a starting job and do well

  22. Randy says:

I don’t get the logic behind: “a 1st round pick next year isn’t as valuable this year…” kind of comment. Any pick next year has absolutely NO value this year….as a pick. it has the same exact value in that next year as a 1st round pick has this year. If i’m trading a first round pick, it’s value is based on the year I use it….not the year I trade it. It makes no sense to me.

    • D says:

Its something that has ben stated as fact by pundits and is almost completely accepted as real. I do think that its not as valuable as a 1st in a current year simply because 1) you have no clue what level 1st it will be, and 2) if everything works out with your picks you do this year (ie optimistic viewpoint) then you wont have as strong a need for it the next year.

Having said that though, its not a full round difference in my opinion, maybe a half round difference at worst. To a team like us with plenty of needs that first is going to considered a first lol, because we arent filling all the holes this year. It also depends a lot on who we got it from. Cleveland, even if they have a miraculous bounce back season are probably picking in the top 20 next year so its a safe bet to assume their 2019 first would be a good one to have, especially for a team thats still trying to fill out depth and get good next man up scenarios.

    • D says:

I think overall the philosophy on its having lesser vale us “bird in the hand is better than two in the bush” but again, not everyone is playing the here and now game, they are playing the always have something in the bush game…

  23. sb7mvp says:

I still say we trade down and take advantage of the depth of this draft while grabbing a top Tight End or two. We need it for the long term success of this team. Tim, before you reply, you’re wrong. lol.

  24. Randy says:

    D,
Is it more a comment on the pick’s value in a trade…and not the pick itself? Is it related to the value chart that Jimmy Johnson came up with in terms of points?

  25. Randy says:

I don’t trade out of #11 unless somebody gives me a great deal. Please God, do NOT do another stupid Kiko sort of trade!

  26. Tim Knight says:

Mike, I like to look at different draft scenarios. Nothing is set in stone and it’s just for fun. My mock was based on the top QBs and LBs were gone so what could happen based on that.

  27. stangerx says:

Randy: some people — including NFL coaches wanting to win now (or even just keep their job) — are willing to pay more in a future draft pick than what they use on draft day. How credit card companies make most of their money. And the evil genius has cleaned up over the years taking advantage of that as well, even if not so much in recent years as he tries to max out the Brady window.

  28. Mike E. says:

Tim – I’ll have an open mind about a month after the pick, maybe a little longer. If I don’t like it, I usually try to think of the positives, and eventually I come around

    —————————————-
I think its possible but they would have to be sure than any person that they had left weren’t just not worth that pick and i really cant see a player like Smith or Fitzpatrick not being there is all the QB’s are gone, and if all the QB’s arent gone then i cant see us not taking one. I guess im saying i dont see a scenario where the value in trading back exceeds the value of staying put and taking one of the guys that is there. The drafts for the past 3-4 years have been very heavy with talent, i think its more a sign of the broadening scope of talented players in college and therefore a likely trend to continue.

  30. Rockphin says:

This mock draft generator is pissing me off!

Four QB’s and BOTH LB’s keep coming off the board before pick #11 leaving me with crap! (LOL all the other first round graded picks are crap!)

  31. wyoming85 says:

    • Mike E. says:

Last year wasn’t a great year for OT’s either. Garret Boles went #20, and then Ryan Ramczyk went #32

    • D says:

Kolton Miller is getting a late round 1 grade from some people but i just cant see it myself. Id have him as a day 2 pick, and most likely a late 2 to late 3 range.

  32. D says:

Randy what i was saying is i think its a value shift due to the inability to predict what number the pick will be. You can use the chart to tell you what the value of the pick is if you know the round and the position, for a future pick you cant know that so you devalue the pick somewhat in comparison to what pick it was this year for the not knowing.

  33. BailBondMike says:

Rock, me too. That’s why I traded down, LOL.

  34. BailBondMike says:

When I did my trade down, Cincy offered me a 1st (#21), a 2nd and a 3rd. The Pats also made an offer of their 1st (#23) and a 4th. Even “FirstPick” knows the workings of the evil empire. LOL

  35. Tim Knight says:

There will be good prospects for us at #11. There are more than 10 good ones.

    • stangerx says:

For sure quality will be there at #11, but not the top 6 or 7 and seems like any of a group of say 10-12 could be the pick for us there. Even just 3 or 4 spots depending on who they have their eye on……some wheeling and dealing options might be there.

  36. stangerx says:

“I guess im saying i dont see a scenario where the value in trading back exceeds the value of staying put”

D — I see that scenario every year, but maybe that is just me. If I was GM would be trading down in or out of the first for more picks in that draft or future ones all the time. So I’m with Randy that one of the top three TEs and say a G, LB or whatever in the 2nd sounds mighty good. Maybe I am just a long range planner or maybe still have PTSD from Ginn and Jordan….heck add in Yatil Green (wasn’t his fault, but same result).

    • D says:

Stanger for us, you dont think there is a scenario where we will be picking at 11 and there will be a guy on the board that isnt worth staying put to select?

      • stangerx says:

D — I think that is the most likely scenario was just saying that yes could see the trade down one…..and as almost every year a fan of it. 🙂

      • D says:

I see these players off the board almost 100% sure by pick 11. Nelson, Chubb, and Barkley. Also i feel 3 of the 4 QB’s will be off the board. So that puts 6 picks gone before we are up and 5 more that will be gone if we stay put,

Out of those 5 picks that are left is this pool of players rated in the top 11.

        Vita Vea
        Minkah Fitzpatrick
        Derwin James
The other of the top 4 QB’s
        Roquan Smith
        Tremaine Edmunds

None of those players interest you enough that you would trade back?

      • stangerx says:

D — my take on how it will play out is almost exactly like yours. And think most likely that one of those six great options will be in aqua next year. Was just saying that I would be picking up the phones to hear what offers there are before putting the card in. So I absolutely agree with you on what probably will happen, but would just pick up the phone to hear what the offers are. Wouldn’t you?

  37. Tim Knight says:

Most draftniks don’t even have the QBs rated as the best players in the draft. But being that they are QBs they know they will go early.

  38. wyoming85 says:

19: R1P19 CB DENZEL WARD DALLAS COWBOYS
20: R1P20 DL VITA VEA DETROIT LIONS

    Yes there is talent left!
But not really the talent we need at the moment

This is why I think we may trade down1

Not me!! I will hate the pick for ever and disparge the player, even against evidence to the contrary just to be “right”.

Oh, wait that’s not me, that’s someone else on here. Never mind.

  40. ocalarob says:

if you consider the trade we did with the vikes, they improved their value by 53%, that said; the value of the 11th pick is 1250, with the same improved value of 53% that turns 1250 into +663 for a total of 1913 points, if we trade to 25 we use 720, add in a 2nd for 330 so now we have a 1 at 25 and 2 second rnd picks this year and we are still owed the profit of 663 which would equate to a mid to late 1st round pick next year along with our 1st we would have 2 firsts next year and could again trade one of those picking up 2nds and 3rds and more low rounders the following year,

I think we will have someone there to draft @11
I’m just not sure we will value them as much as another team.

They won’t unless one of them has turned around, come back and turned around again.

      • Rockphin says:

Wrong! They will hit head on withing the fist hour and the second train will never leave the station! But that wasn’t the point of the post.

D — I think that is the most likely scenario was just saying that yes could see the trade down one…..and as almost every year a fan of it. 🙂
    ———————————–
Its a conservative finacial approach to draft picks, im a fan of it too, but realistically it doesnt make as much sens in the range where we are at. At top 10, especially top 5, is the best trade back spot because you can demand really great value for the pick, far exceeding the draft chart compensation. To be when you can trade at that range though you have to be both pseudo ok at most position and there has to be players that you dont need that are in extremely high demand. This usually surrounds QB’s with several QB needy teams, but it could involve other players. The Giants are there right now, though it could be argued they could really use Chubb, Barkley or one of the top QB’s. The Colts are for sure in that position. Im not really seeing anything past 6 being a really good trade back position, an most of those teams would do better for themselves staying put, but it just matters what some team is willing to throw at them.

Ranges 10-15 are usually really bad places to trade back because you are giving up too much and your not going to get absurd asking prices for your draft spot. You also almost assuredly can use some player who will be available in that range on your team since you are drafting that high, so it doesn’t make too much sense to trade back when you ate in that kind of place. Thats where we are, and its a pretty good place to be in because you are so far out of the 1-6 range not to trade up without giving up everything and then some, and we are for sure going to get some top tier talent because there is such a push to get a QB from a lot of the other teams.

Latter parts of the first round become really viable for trade back, as in a trade out of the round to get a quantity of day two picks. This usually happens where there is depth to your draft and you have teams that are swiss cheese as far as the holes in their roster and yet have lots of draft capitol to move around with. Example of this would be like Minnesota was a few years back or how the Browns are right now.

  44. D says:

Stanger, yeah im always picking that phone up because you dont know until you listen how big of an idiot is on the other side of that phone lol

  45. D says:

Wyoming, yes there is talent left, but lets say Roquan is a 94 rated player and Vea is an 88th rated player. and they are both on the board, you would trade down and hope to get Vea instead of staying put and taking Smith? There is more to it than they are just talented players still out there. Its the first round, those are all talented players, but even among that pool, there are ones that are rarer finds talent wise than others, so at 11 you are getting a shot at 1 to 2 of those rare plyers that are not going to be there if you trade back 3-4 spots even

    • wyoming85 says:

Ya, But the players I posted weren’t Smith.
I took Allen. But not everyone likes him! And he would have high trade value!

Because its Latin, and the meaning of the Latin word for apartment means a separated space.

      • D says:

Makes sense when you consider the living unit a separate space that’s a part of a large building.

  60. D says:

Oh and on the lottery one, thats not irony either, again, its a murphys law. Irony would have played off the idea of winning something, so irony would have been winning the lottery for a military draft or winning the lottery for the hunger games.

    • CavalierKong says:

The lottery one can also be irony. You win the lottery and expect to live a grand life, then die the next day. That would be reality contrary to expectations, and kind of amusing.

Yeah but in the song it was a 92 year old man, which makes him dying not unexpected, especially if he got a big shock to the system.
    —————————–
Still not irony. Would actually be more ironic if he was young and died the next day, and even then you would need something liek it was his first time playing the lottery to really make it ironic. If a guy doesnt win the lottery until 98 then does and he dies (as you might expect) at such an advanced age, then its not really ironic its a murphy’s law. So probably should have been “A young man, in perfect health, won the lottery and died the next day…..” thats still only kinda sorta irony.

  64. CavalierKong says:

Regardless of age, still irony. You win the lottery, you expect life to improve, then you die. Textbook irony actually.

I love these irony, satire, sarcasm debates. Some people become so enamored with their definitions when it is really quite subjective.
(Not saying that about you at all D, I’ve just had a number of really surprisingly intense debates with friends over this particular topic, so I had to jump in on this, lol.)

  65. D says:

Why couldnt they come up with a smaller word for abbreviated. Which this is also ironic.
    >>> Ill go ahead and shoot mine own down…..again its Latin’s fault. Ab — moving it to or in this case making it, brevio — short, ated to make short, shorter. So literally the meaning becomes “making it shorter”

  66. D says:

Well technically you could them make a lot of the others irony by twisting things around. Guy takes his first flight thinking he is curing himself of his fears and instead confirms his fears and then none of it matters because he is dead and no longer fears anything.

    • CavalierKong says:

That is what makes these types of debates so amusing to me. It’s really a matter of interpretation of the actions/event/results. You may not find it ironic, but the next guy might. There is no right or wrong in most cases as it’s subject to individual perception and interpretation.

Still, you can find pages of high volume debates online about these definitions, lol.

A bunch of their songs switch styles, tempos, instrument classes, etc all through the song.

So if we go 3-1 against them sweep the jests, and split with NE and Buff, that’s 7-3.
I hate that Jax has gotten so good right when it’s our turn to play them.
Plus Luck might be back and Mariotta has a new coach to help them out, and Houston has Watson. So maybe we win 2 of those to go 9-5.
Our two extra AFC teams are Oakland and Cincy, so we should certainly at least split that, which would make us end up at 10-6. I’ll take that on a rebuilding year.

We haven’t seen this team play with new coaching changes, guys coming off of IR, Tannehill specifically, a revamped OL and defense, WR corps, a new TE etc. There isn’t much of a body of work. The only defenders we have that have been around for quite some time are Wake and Jones. A lot of players have only been here a few years.

We haven’t drafted yet and that will be important. Hopefully we have a better season without injuries. 12 guys and some key guys on IR was tough this past season.

We also need a Kicker. LOL

MY 2018 Miami Dolphins Draft (v4.4.5.18)

        R1P11: Lamar Jackson, QB, Louisville
        R2P10: Mike Gesicki, TE, PSU
R3P9: Rashaad Penny, RB, San Diego State
R4P23: Durham Smythe, TE, Notre Dame
        R4P31: Sean Welsh, G, Iowa
        R6P35: Poona Ford, DT, Texas
R7P9: Skai Moore, LB, South Carolina
R7P11: Jalen Davis, CB, Utah State

        UDFAs coming soon

KEY(?): moving TJ McDonald to full-time LB, trading for Pearl Thomas post-June 2nd +$17M (MTP won’t be able to help himself).

  92. Randy says:

    M13,
Would you rather sign Earl Thomas or draft Derwin James? James is a guy who I think could become really, really good. I think I’d rather have the young guy.

    • mf13ss says:

I think Derwin is CERTAINLY in play for us, but I wouldn’t advocate drafting him: JMO. I’m not seeing elite traits to warrant taking him @ R1P11. Again, JMO.

  93. mf13ss says:

    Randy,

Would you be good with taking Sean Welsh in the 4th round? Maybe too high or too low for him? I ask because I KNOW you’ve seen much more of him than I have.

  94. Tim Knight says:

KEY(?): moving TJ McDonald to full-time LB, trading for Pearl Thomas post-June 2nd +$17M (MTP won’t be able to help himself).

M13, MTP won’t be able to help himself or you? LOL

I don’t see either happening. McDonald maybe a nickel LB but not full-time. What’s the deal with SEA wanting to move on from Earl Thomas anyway?

    • mf13ss says:

HONESTLY, I’d rather get younger than the Pearl and without adding yet ANOTHER high-priced FA. M13 can resist, but I’m not sure that MTP can.

Man, I dunno what’s going on in Seattle, but I DO know that it isn’t all about the Pearl. They’ve REALLY gone out of their way to rebuild/retool… much like ourselves. If I were them, I’d KEEP the Pearl and do nearly anything to keep him happy.

So in my draft — and being I didn’t see a SOLID LB (Tremaine or Roquan likely already off the board) being available to us — I thought outside the box in how we could get better at BOTH LB (moving McDonald to full-time LB) and S (acquiring the Pearl). If we could do this, it would address more positions… allowing us to focus on the Draft to address even MORE positions.

YOU know, that I know, that we probably won’t do this! LOL 🙂

  95. Tim Knight says:

Who are the high-priced FAs we’ve signed? It’s been mostly 2nd tier contracts. If anything we’ve moved away from the high-priced stuff.

    • mf13ss says:

Are you talking about relative ‘YESTERDAY’, or AFTER the fire sale we just had on some really good — albeit high-priced — talent? LOL

Translation: we WERE in CAP HELL… BEFORE we recently cut and/or traded high-priced TALENT. And as a result, we’re still just BARELY under the cap… with MANY holes to fill, as a result.

I don’t care for the crowd that says, “OH! We’re in SUCH cap hell now, aren’t we?!! LOL”. Well… we WERE in cap hell, hence our recent moves and purge of talent.

So now, we’re just barely under the cap (dead $$$ is going to suck next year, to boot), and we’ve lost a LOT of talent, as a result.

Some people aren’t qualified to speak on these matters… and I’m not talking about you, Tim.

      • mf13ss says:

So at the end of the day, the question becomes: will MTP not be able to help himself (as he did with the stej… NOT learning his lesson there), taking his credit card to Miami and while not being able to help himself here (strike 2)… and he’s going to be trusted NOT to make a HUGE move once we get $17M back post-June 1st?

I’ve truthfully NEVER gambled in my entire life… but I think I’d actually bet that MTP can’t help himself from gambling yet again, once $17M becomes available to him.

SOMEBODY needs to shred his Phins credit card.

And Lord only knows WTF he’s going to do in the Draft.

      • naplesfan2010 says:

well theoretically you are correct as usual, but specifically, it was time to move on from Pouncey from a medical and personal perspective.

And Suh’s money was just too heavy to bear.

Landry scoffed at a very generous offer.
Matt Moore was no longer viable. Cutler, fuggetaboutit.

We did the right thing with Ja’wuan. Re-signed Reshad. Extended Wake. Restructured Tannehill. Let MThomas get a paycheck he deserved where they could afford him. Cut Timmons and JThomas because they deserved to be cut after doggin’ it all year.

Somebody else overpaid for Parkey, not us.

So who is the talent that we lost that we could’ve kept?

  96. CavalierKong says:

LOL @ Detachable Penis. I remember hearing that song a long time ago…in a a galaxy far, far away.

  97. naplesfan2010 says:

MF13 I love your latest mock except for r1.
Why would anyone want to draft a Louisville guy when we already have 3?
    — Devante WR, Senorise RB, and Brandon Radcliff RB.

    • mf13ss says:

Thanks, man! And I DO hear ya on the Louisville problemos. I’m betting on Gase being able to turn Lamar into a STUD… and perhaps I shouldn’t bet on Gase like that.

As I’ve stated before, this is the first Draft in over a decade that I haven’t ANY IDEA of what we may do… it’s WEIRD! SO, SO many directions we could go in… and I think SO, SO many of us will be wrong when it’s all said and done.

I want to start a Phins Draft Poll.

  98. naplesfan2010 says:

I’d take a risk on Hurst DT, if we had already drafted either Hurst TE or Gesicki. I think he is a penetrator with a nice motor.
