Dolphins 2018 Post NFL Draft Outlook

I’d say we had what most of us here at FU believe was a very successful draft, and for those of you have been here a long time, which is most of you, to get any kind of consensus on our drafts is normally impossible.  Despite that fact, along with the return of our starting QB, Las Vegas oddsmakers have us winning only 6 games.  In Tannehill’s worst season we were 6-10, not coincidentally, that was Joe Philbin’s last year as Head Coach of the Miami Dolphins.  I’m sure there are 3 major factors as to why they have us so low, and I believe first and foremost it’s the health of our QB Ryan Tannehill, and how long he’s been away from the game, 19 games to be exact.  When we cut Suh, we lost one of our best defensive players.  When we chose not to pay Jarvis Landry $15M + per season, we lost one of our most productive offensive players.

We know the losses, but I feel like they don’t consider the gains we’ve made strongly enough.  I think we finally got the back end help we’ve been missing here in Miami, and I’m pretty confident that Minkah Fitzpatrick will be playing a lot, right from the start.  He will instantly prove he’s better than anyone else we have as a deep safety, or even a LOS cover man on a TE, or bigger slot WR.  He will have a ton of opportunities, and will make the best of them.  I think Ryan Tannehill is healthy and ready to go, and although there is so much worry his wretched knee can’t hold up, look at Frank Gore who shredded his knees in college at U of Miami, and is still playing in the NFL 14 years later.  There was nothing special or unusual about Tannehill’s injury, and I say once again, it wasn’t two separate injuries, he had a slight tear that he tried to rehab without surgery, and then it finally tore later on.  Not devastating, it’s like a button on your jacket that’s loose, and then one day it just FALLS OFF!  It’s still just one button, and yes it was disheartening when Tannehill went down, it was a run of the mill knee injury,

In addition to Fitzpatrick and Tannehill, we finally drafted that receiving TE that gives all NFL DC’s nightmares.  We’ve been terrorized for years by them, but now we have one of our very own.  Mike Gesicki will make a difference here from day one.  I know they say TE’s historically start slow in the NFL, but if you watch the NY Giants,  you’d know that Evan Engram, a smaller version of Gesicki had 64 receptions and 722 yards and 6 TD’s last season.  I think Gesicki can easily duplicate that or better that.  He will additionally open the offense for everyone else.  Once he’s out there tearing up the middle of the field, he will garner more attention, which in turn will open things up for the run game, and our perimeter receivers, Parker and Stills, and also for short passes and screens to Albert Wilson and Jakeem Grant.

We have had lots of problems covering TE’s, and RB’s and we’ve seen LB Kiko Alonso burnt far too often.  The addition of Fitzpatrick and also LB Jerome Baker gives us flexibility.  I think we’re going to try and figure out who our primary LOS cover guys will be in both nickel and dime formations.  It might change a lot, but they have to identify which guys can get it done. Fitzpatrick, Baker, McDonald will all get the chance to be on the field more, since in today’s NFL, offenses operate with 3, 4 and 5 receiver sets so often that teams are in the nickel and dime more than ever.  We know what the issue is, and they drafted talent to combat it, in addition to signing T.J. McDonald last year.  You could even throw LB Stephone Anthony in the mix, big, fast LB who can cover.

We didn’t replace the huge hole in the DL after releasing Ndamukong Suh.  The fact is, even if we took Vita Vea or Da’Ron Payne, we still wouldn’t have filled that hole.  Suh was a beast, he played a ridiculous amount of snaps throughout his entire career, and easily led the Dolphins in that category.  The philosophy has changed, and we’re going to rotate fresh players in more often from now on.  At the moment, that’s Jordan Phillips, Davon Godchaux, Vincent Taylor, Gabe Wright and also DE/DT William Hayes.  Also keep in mind the cap money we get after June 1st, and I won’t be surprised in the least if we pick up a DT in FA at that point.  After the draft, veterans are often cut, so we’ll have some choices to bolster the DL.

I love the Kalen Ballage pick.  I know I’ve said it a bunch of times, but watch the kid play, and he’s a lot like Arizona’s David Johnson.  He’s a very reliable receiver, he has some giddyup running a 4.46 40 at 6’2 228.  He’s a tough short yardage back, but also one who has the breakaway speed to take it the distance.  Ditto on the pick of Durham Smythe, TE.  He’s the blocking TE to replace Anthony Fasano, and he’s a decent receiver as well.  When we’re running the ball, Smythe will be the in line blocking TE, and I’m sure there will be formations with both Smythe and Gesicki, with Gesicki split out.  You can run or pass from that formation, and also keep in mind that although Gesicki wasn’t asked to block much at Penn State, he will block here in the NFL.  He won’t be Durham Smythe, but he will block.

We also bolstered special teams in the draft with the selections of LB Jerome Baker, Cornell Armstrong, Quentin Poling, and K Jason Sanders.  In addition, I think we also got some help on the offensive line.  Acquiring Josh Sitton, one of the best pass blocking OG’s in the NFL, we definitely improved.  We got an OC we can count on being there the whole season, and who will be able to practice with his linemates when we traded for Daniel Kilgore.  LT Laremy Tunsil will be a better player having LG Josh Sitton next to him, teaching him his responsibilities and of course, having better play next to him.  If Ja’Wuan James is healthy, he will be a good player playing for his next contract, a good spot for us to be in.  Hopefully we both benefit by that, and we re-sign James after a great season.  Right guard is a question mark, but we have promise in up and comer Jesse Davis and veteran Ted Larsen.  Between those 2, they should be able to hold down that spot. Also, maybe last year’s draftee OG Isaac Asiata enters the mix and surprises.

6 wins?  FU Las Vegas!

HULKFEST — Sunday 10/21 vs Lions

Sat eve meet-up as always plus our new to be usgh event — tunes with the Dog on Friday on Hollywood Beach.

“Seat draft” is next Tues and I need to put in a rough number then. No obligation to buy now and you can back out till the seats have to be paid for, but please help me figure out how many to reserve.

Based on what folks have said on the board am figuring the following (but confirm even if I have you as “In”).

    IN
    Hulk
    Mike E (+1 or +2)
    Pig
    Doggy (+2 or +3)
    Son (+1-3)
    Rock
    stanger (+2-4)
    OD (sitting with the crew?)
    Phelon (+1 and own seats)
Krishna (+1) (sitting with the crew?)
    Toba (+1)

    POSSIBLE
    ElephantRider
    Naples (+1)
    Bookman (+1)

Newest add is Toba and his better half….believe this will be like four in a row for the wild and crazy Canucks. 🙂

D: The last time I talked to my dad (12 years ago) he said “I’m really happy you’ve picked-up your interest in hockey the last few years.” My dad was a semi-pro goalie in Alberta long before they had face masks for goalies. And he had the facial scars to prove it. When we came to America in 1954, my dad occasionally took me downtown to see the Buffalo minor league team play to a packed house in “The Aud,” –War Memorial Auditorium, an old relic built to honor those who served in WORLD WAR I. Those were among the very best times I ever had with my dad. –Even today, when I turn on a game on TV, he’s always the first person I think of.

    —————
MY DAD always thought NFL football was played by too many “fat-ass, out of shape, pansies who wore helmets with face masks!” In HIS DAY, there were no helmets or face masks in hockey. —Just ultra mean guys who would body check their own mother if she made a play for the puck!!. Thankfully, dad mellowed a bit as both football and hockey players got bigger, stronger, faster. In his later years, he even thought face shields on hockey players were OK. “It sure beats spending too much time and money on stitches and surgery,” he told me (and HE had plenty of both).
    ————–
IT IS WITH GREAT GLEE that I ponder today’s 5th, and perhaps, FINAL game this year between the Bruins and the Lightning in Amalie Arena in downtown Tampa! I’d shudder to think what my dad’s response would be to someone licking his face in a hockey game!! Something like I’d take his own hockey stick and shove it up his ass until it came out his nose!!!!

I’m predicting Tampa Bay eliminates Boston TODAY!! Face off is # PM on NBC.

No wonder why I like Ross….he’s a trade down guy just like me. This from Ben Volin:

“A well-placed league source tells us that the Dolphins had the pick of Alabama safety Minkah Fitzpatrick all ready to go at No. 11 when owner Stephen Ross stepped in and implored his team to trade back, both to acquire more picks and to save money on the first-rounder. Ross’s football people talked him out of it, and the Dolphins went ahead with the Fitzpatrick pick.”

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I saw this earlier and I find that out of character for Ross, both being that it was about money and that he would intervene like that. He’s never been cheap when it comes to paying players and coaches. I almost feel like he might have been joking.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

I think Ross has always taken a business look at such, and that makes sense to me, especially since Minkah is not the kind of put the fannies in the seat splash guy that he encouraged before.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

The Lightning are a really good team. It’s fun when your team is involved in playoff hockey. The Flyers gave it fight in a bizarre series with the Pens but I saw a lot of upside from many of their top young players and there are a lot of them with more coming up through the system including G Carter Hart. I think the Flyers will be in the mix the next few years.

  26. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

OD, to be fair to Ross he’s quite the philanthropist too and will be even more when he passes. I get you don’t like the guy and think he’s bad for the Dolphins football team, but he’s never been known as cheap.

  27. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

It’s a universal thought that Minkah Fitzpatrick was one the top 5-6 prospects in this somewhat average draft. The overhype on the QBs and some teams drafting for pure need helped him fall to us at #11. I was watching with my friend who’s a Giants fan and he was psyched with the Barkley pick despite many people not liking taking RBs that high at #2. When it got to #11 I said dude, it’s gotta be Minkah Fitzpatrick, he’s the BPA and the Dolphins can use a player like him. Boom!!! That was the selection. It was easy peasy.

If Ross really did what was reported, it’s a bit disturbing. Let the football people do their job. That was the absolute best pick we could have asked for. Some of the other top prospects were never falling to #11. We got “great” value there.

    —————

It seems weird to me it was a league source that has intimate knowledge of how that went down, not a source within the Dolphins.

Then, say we trade down to somewhere between 16-20, how much money does that actually save? A few million over a 4-5 year period? When has Ross ever shown that type of conservate outlook in regards to spending on players.

Just a couple of things about that don’t really jive to me. On the other side, it’s reported by Volin, who I’ve always respected as being more about reporting than sensationalism, so who knows. It just seems odd.

  30. olddolphan's avatar olddolphan says:

TIM: Gotta disagree with your view that Ross “Has never been known to be cheap!” Ask Brian Billick. When the former Raven’s Super Bowl winning coach applied for a job in Miami, Ross told him “Your loss to the Dolphins was their ONLY win of the season. I probably could have bought them for a bit less (a few hundred thousand less per Billick) if your Ravens had beaten Miami!” Now those who know Wayne Huizenga say the price of the franchise would have been the same if Miami had gone 1-15 or 0-16. The price, in fact, had been agreed upon before Miami won their one game of the season. Anyway, Ross used this as a negotiating ploy to see if Billick would accept about $200,000 less in salary if hired. Billick reportedly said he and Ross had “philosophical differences,” and he withdrew his application, saying “That’s NOT the kind of owner I choose to work for.”
    ———-
It’s also a fact that the sale of the franchise was held up because Huizenga wanted to use the corporate helicopter a few days per month, while Ross wanted sole use of the helo. This, of course, is peanuts compared to the 1.1 Billion Ross paid for the franchise.
    ———-
ROSS’s greatest attempted heist was trying to get the State of Florida to pay for the cost of the stadium upgrade when original owner Joe Robbie has previously PRIVATELY FINANCED THE STADIUM and HUIZENGA, himself, had privately paid for upgrades during his many years as majority owner. When Ross’s request could NOT even get a hearing in Tallahassee, he subsequently insulted all the Republican leaders of the state and threatened to finance Democratic opponents who, presumably, would be inclined to let the taxpayers foot most of the bill!!–Fat chance of that ever happening!!
    ———
Personally, I’m not even a registered Republican. And I’m no fan of many of our state’s elected leaders. But to brazenly ask the legislature to do what PRIVATE MONEY previously had done shows both Ross’s greed and his lack of how Florida politics works! To top it off, Ross donated about $400 million to the U. of Michigan while trying to get Florida taxpayers to foot the bill for upgrades at “SUN-BAKED STADIUM!” STEVE, no way in hell the taxpayers want to help you financially so you can give away more money to a BIG TEN SCHOOL!!!!
    ———
Mike Dee, who was hired by Ross to head this drive for state money, was let go by Ross when his attempt to raid the Florida treasury failed. He moved on to be an executive vice president of the San Diego Padres BASEBALL TEAM!!

    • olddolphan's avatar olddolphan says:

I COULD get into the ways Ross has nickel & dimed season ticket holders during his 9 year reign of football futility, but you’d be bored and/or refuse to believe it. Suffice it to say my group of “BOYZ” who used to be season ticket holders were ALL so incensed by Ross’s antics that they quit buying season tickets. Out of about a dozen of us 3 years ago, I am THE ONLY REMAING SEASON TICKET HOLDER.

Gore USED to be a very good running back. His time with the colts (last 3 years) he only averaged 3.73 yards per carry. That is good enough to be the 37th best in the league. Hopefully this was due to the Colts and not his age……Good luck with that.

I like very little of what they’ve done to the xmen. I understand if comic doesn’t translate to to screen, but some things are just dumb. • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I never read X-Men, but I liked the first couple of movies. I couldn’t tell you though if they were at all like the comic books portrayals or not, but I liked them. Like anything, over saturation hurts the product

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I thought the 1st two xmen movies were good movies that stayed true to what the xmen comics were about. The interaction between humans and mutants, and the issues that arose from the fear the mutant population engendered, as well as from those in power being threatened by a new segment of society. The character changes may not have been popular with all comic book fans, but the movies and characters were still widely popular in their own right. OMG, wolverine is supposed to be 5’2″, not 6’2″. Lol, who cares? (not saying you were posing that kind of objection, but that is the kind of thing I read a lot in regards to ‘changes’ lol.)

Logan was also great, and had a lot of elements form the Old Man Logan series. Xmen 3- garbage, Apocalypse- garbage, they really changed the Apocalypse character and ruined him. All IMO of course.

Gase has also said he prefers to keep the same personnel on the field during a series or a successful drive because he feels getting into a rhythm is important. That doesn’t mean we won’t switch out here and there especially when changing formations, but it won’t be down to down.

ORob, you are really nitpicking on Drake’s negative runs. Ajayi had more negative runs than he did. Talk about a guy who tried to bounce everything outside, he did it constantly. Ajayi is also not the power back you think he was/is. He’s a beast at the 2nd level, not smashing guys at the LOS. He was never that. He ran mostly out of shotgun and did his damage well past the LOS against bad angles by LBs and taking on DBs.

Why not just let the RB position work itself out and see what it is instead of trying to downplay Drake as some gimmick RB which is comical? He lead all RBs in yards and yards after contact during the games he was the bell cow but let’s pretend that didn’t happen. Why are you even trying to do that?

    • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

We need positive yardage on first down, some around here think Drake can deliver that, I think Drake is a great back in the right circumstance but he’s not the “bell cow”.

not trying to diminish Drakes value, just a discussion on a difference in opinion on where is value lies.

There’s a reason this FO got two power RBs this off season

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I don’t even know what power RB means anymore. Gore has always been a zone cut and slash back, and Ballage is big and fast who’s never played in the NFL. A lot of his big runs were outside and his TDs in the Wildcat. Not a whole lot of Christian Okoye here. LOL

We’re a zone run team, not a mauling group. If one guy misses a block it can blow up the play. That’s why we used Gray in short yardage at times because he would use his size to power his way for a yard or two. That’s all we needed.

The OL playing better and hopefully the rook TE Smythe can give us what a young Fasano was. He’s a prototype TE where Gesicki is an athletic receiving weapon.

The offense will be very different than the 2017 version for a lot of reasons.
