Camp Battles – QB

The 2018 Miami Dolphins have put all their eggs in the Ryan Tannehill basket.  For better or for worse, the success or failure of this team will rest on the shoulders, right arm and knees of Ryan Tannehill.  This is his year to succeed, his year to finally have the successful season the Dolphins have always hoped he could reach.  In 2016, Tannehill was playing close to that level in the final 8 games he played until the unfortunate knee injury which ended up sidelining him for the rest of the ’16 season and the entire 2017 season.  This even includes the annual thrashing by the Baltimore Ravens game in which we lost 38-6.  Tannehill over the last 8 games had his best NFL stretch, playing to a top 10 QB level.  He threw for 1721 yards, with a 69% completion rate with 13 TD’s and 5 INT’s, for an excellent 100.09 NFL QBR.  This is what I’d like to see Ryan Tannehill have as his baseline, and maybe play even better, throw more TD’s, and help this team win more games.  I think it’s possible.  Gase has constructed this team as much in the image he wants as possible in 3 years.  The offensive line should be improved with Laremy Tunsil at LT, Josh Sitton at LG, Dan Kilgore at C, Jesse Davis at RG and Ja’Wuan James at RT.  He brought in Gore to teach our young backs how to conduct themselves as professionals.  Gore, Drake, Ballage and whoever have the talent to move the football.  We have some crafty veterans in Kenny Stills, Danny Amendola, and we also have the speedy slot man Albert Wilson, as well as the ultra-fast Jakeem Grant.  If Devante Parker ever plays up to his potential, we may have one of the most dangerous WR corps in the NFL.  That’s our starting QB, let’s take a look at the rest.

Brock Osweiler QB – 6’7″ 240

Osweiler came into the NFL in the same draft as Ryan Tannehill.  He was a 2nd RD pick (57th overall) to the Denver Broncos, who at that time had the great Peyton Manning as their starter.  Osweiler finally got his chance to start in 2016 and it wasn’t pretty.  Osweiler completed under 60% of his passes (59.02%), throwing for 2957 yards along with 15 TD’s, and 16 INT’s and a QBR of 72.2.  Not pretty.  In 2017, Trevor Siemian won the starting job, so Osweiler managed to play in only 6 games with 4 starts, and it wasn’t any better than 2016 for Brock.  Osweiler was drafted for near elite arm strength, but his accuracy and decision making have countered any arm talent he possesses.  He wil, face some stiff competition for the backup QB job here in Miami from David Fales, who Gase brought over from the Chicago Bears.  Maybe Gase can work some magic with the big fella, he’ll have to if Osweiler is going to ever help us.

___________________________________________________________

David Fales QB – 6’2″ 213

Fales was the backup QB in Chicago when Jay Cutler was the QB.  During the 2016 season, the Bears employed 5 different QB’s when Cutler struggled with injuries, with names such as  Jay Cutler, Matt Barkley, Brian Hoyer, Cameron Meredith, and of course David Fales.  Fales only appeared in one game for the Bears that season, and it was very late in the game.  In 2017, Gase brought Fales to the Dolphins (Along with Jay Cutler after Tannehill was ruled out for the season).  Fales appeared in the final game of the 2017 season against Buffalo,  and played fairly well in a 22-16 loss.  That was the fateful game where Landry was ejected for extracurricular activities.  So not a huge body of work to see, but I do recall Fales looking pretty good in the 2017 preseason, for what that’s worth.  Fales definitely has a chance to be our backup, especially if Osweiler continues on his current trajectory.

__________________________________________________________

Bryce Petty QB – 6’3″ 230

First off, if the NY Jets cast away a QB, why would ANYONE even look at them?  Petty was a fiery, competitive, team leader for the Baylor Bears.  Yes, it was a spread offense, as many college offenses are, so he needed a lot of work playing under center and going through progressions.  Well, he didn’t progress well in the NY Jet organization, and when he did get a chance to play, it was pretty miserable.  As a draftee, he was a QB who had better than average arm strength, good size, and very good leadership characteristics.  He led Baylor to 2 back to back Big 12 championships.  He had a great college career with impressive stats and pedigree.  He will be a dark horse to even make the team, we have carried 2 QB’s in the past, including last season until Fales was added to the roster in late October.  Petty has little time to really impress to earn a roster spot here, and it’s very unlikely he can pull that off.

So that’s where we stand at the QB position.  It’s basically Ryan Tannehill or bust, and I’m actually OK with that.  I feel like with a better O-line, Sitton on the left side next to Tunsil, and Kilgore opening up holes for our run game, it will make things easier for Tannehill as the Dolphins offense will be more efficient.  Hey, I waited till the very last paragraph to mention we actually drafted a TE, TWO of them!  As we all know, a TE can be a QB’s best friend, and now Tannehill has at least 2.  I’m excited to see our new offense take the field.  This truly will be a team effort, and we will not be relying on any 1 superstar to take over a game.  We have plenty of options on offense, with the aforementioned WR corps, with Gore, Drake and Ballage, as well as the TE’s Gesicki and Smythe and maybe Derby, Gray or Escobar, whomever wins that 3rd TE spot.  I wouldn’t take any one Dolphins player in a Fantasy Football league this season, I think a lot of our players are going to be involved, we’re really going to spread the ball around.  This is ideal for #17.

GO DOLPHINS!

M13, there sure does seem to be a lot of violence going on these days. Maybe it’s our access to so much information these days that we know everything that’s going on, but there sure seems to be a lot of shootings and homicides. A lot of really disgusting stuff too.
    ————————————-
It the slide of humanity. When people no longer value life, their own or others, then you are going to see the depravity of humans. A lot of what we do that is heinous, is complete disregard for anything but our own id desires. Combine that with no real fear of consequence and rise in mental instability and you will see things becoming commonplace that should be rare and unheard of. We do “notice” more of it than we use to because of tools like the internet that link us across the world, but its on the rise too, and there is no doubting that.

An overhaul of the media needs to take place in my opinion. In this particular event the guy had been harassing a former classmate and legal action was taken, then the newspaper writes a story about it with some untruths in it. Why is the media provoking this guy?

The media needs to be held accountable for articles they write that aren’t true. Of course the guy shouldn’t have taken the law into his own hands, but why provoke an unstable person?

This guy was at the point where he really didn’t care any longer what would happen to him. Something needs to change, but not sure what the correct remedy would be for harassers. Do you only make them go through mental health help only after threatening someone after a court case like this or everytime after some type of conviction?

ORob, it wasn’t just injuries that plagued us last year, not a lot went right with that team. This year’s team will not resemble last year’s team is all I’m saying. Not sure how good we’ll be, but it will be different.

correct, it was also trading away the rb who carried the team, no running game equals losses

That was the reason for drafting him. Those big, fast, athletic TEs are QB friendly and mismatch nightmares.

    • D's avatar D says:

He was on my man crush list that year as well. Fitzpatrick was a CB the year before last, and was arguably better than his buddy Marlon Humphrey at CB that year. Humphrey was the 2nd QB taken that year. I heard plenty of people talking about Fitzpatrick as how they would evaluate him as a CB vs a S in this past draft and they had him down as the best S and possibly the best CB too. You had he and Denzel Ward being pretty even in CB discussions.

Steve, from what I have heard, granted not a lot because I haven’t bothered to focus on it, the guy sued the paper for liable for what the paper wrote about him, lost the case, appealed and lost again so I’m not sure where you are getting the the media should be held accountable from. In this case they were held accountable and were twice ruled not wrong.

The “Fake news” is more often than not real.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

It wasn’t real here, they said he was convicted, but had had a plea deal, but that’s not my point. In general the media gets to write whatever they want true or not, and even ruin people, if they want.

This license to kill or ruin isn’t right. Let’s make them more responsible. They’ll say shut, then take it back, but the damage may have already been done.

I find it hard to believe this guy went off, because of what they wrote there has to be more to it.

I think with all the supplements these guys take they sometimes don’t know what’s in some of them.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Tim — you could be right, but when it comes to PEDs think they say supplements whatever it was for. Not sure if it holds for appeals, but the CBA prohibits the league from disclosing exactly what was found.

Karma will always prevail with PEDs, you can pay me now or…

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Agreed, Tim. Some players are always looking for the newest, most efficacious supplement or treatment to give ’em an edge, and half the time the trainer or nutritionist probably doesn’t really know half of what’s in it.

Of course some of them are just straight up cheating and get caught, lol.

      • D's avatar D says:

I expect its intentional with the players that have had injuries and/or are getting a little older. I dont necessarily think its to gain an athletic advantage as much as it is to be able to recover more effectively.

Still, they do give the players a list of all banned items, including the ones that contain banned items so i think part of the blame is on them for just not being careful. Seems like a suspension that cost you millions would be a deterrent to picking out a product to use without checking the ban list.

  11. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Ooooh, Kong pulling efficacious out of his big hairy butt. lol

  12. D's avatar D says:

What bothers me is the league punishes harder for PEDs than they do for illegal substances.

    • D's avatar D says:

Incidentally college also does that. A player who takes a banned substance they get a 12 month suspension so they miss the rest of the current year an part of the next one. If they get busted for an illegal substance, they dont get punished at all, unless the school itself feels they need to be suspended. The schools generally do levy a 1-2 game suspension for it, but 12 months vs a game or two….that’s fucking ridiculous. I guess the thing to remember in college, if you want a performance enhancer, make it crystal meth or cocaine and not a GNC workout supplement.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

The way these players punish their bodies I have no issue with them using supplements that promote healing. PEDs is another thing but I’m not sure all the banned substances are actually PEDs.

Each time my flip phone dies, I get a new one, and will continue to do so until they stop making them, lol.

People always ask my why i don’t upgrade, and I tell them I’m not paying some monthly freaking car payment for a phone, mine is $35 a month, no stupid contract so I can afford the phone until the next one comes out next year, and anything I need to look up I can do from work or when i get home.

I don’t judge what other people want to do with their money and time, but for me,I don’t understand the fervor over phones. I just don’t feel the need to have a computer in my pocket. I also don’t need to take a million selfies with filters or whatever which I can then upload to the social media of choice. Mine can do the only two things I need a phone to do, text and call, lol.

  20. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

The PED QB thing is interesting, but in all honestly with the exception of recovering from injury, does a QB really have a reason to justify the risk of using PEDs?

Athletic ability is paramount for every position on the field except QB. A hairsbreadth of difference can be the deciding factor for any other position, but it is rarely or even never the deciding factor at QB. In most cases with QB, athleticism is more of a bonus as opposed to a requirement. Of course for the running QB this doesn’t apply, but combine the fact their are just a handful of starting uber-athletic QBs with that, and maybe that is more the reason they don’t get tagged more often.

When a player is injured and goes on IR, do they still have to take random tests or anything throughout the year?

    —————
Excellent question… and I’m not certain. I would wager a GUESS, though, that yes… so long as one is being paid by an NFL franchise (that includes IR), they would be subject to random testing… ESPECIALLY if there’s a history of infractions.

I would think that the only way to get away from random testing would be to become a FA. Just a guess, CavKong.

LOL @ wishful thinking. I don’t really wish injury on any non-Patriot, but screw Landry. 🙂

As for staying away from the team, that’s kinda what I’m asking. Do they have that choice to disappear for the season? Or are they required to present themselves to the league for testing if they get the call while on IR.

I don’t really know anything about the testing process, so maybe my question is off base. I mean if the testing process consists of league reps picking players from the team facility at random a few times through the year then I guess that would answer my question.

Then we get to Landry. RB, TE and a WR rotation will make it seem like he never mattered. What he did was short and midrange, not difficult to replace that and we have. Yup! From a horror season in 2017 at 6-10 to now 3-13 in 2018. LOL

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Pouncey with us last year was horrible, but now that hes gone we lost the pro bowl version of him. Suh was great, except when he was jumping offsides, teaching others to do the same, not staying in his designed lane, or just going thru the motions once the opposing O got that first 1st down on a drive. I don’t even want to get into Landry, everyone knows what I think of him.

  35. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Tim – I think the prognosticators basically just skimmed right past us, looked at the losses lazily, and didn’t bother to check that Tannehill is back, our MLB who we lost for the entire season is back, we drafted a fantastic back end secondary player who can play in a lot of different spots and situations, we have the horses for a solid running game that are diversified to be excellent receivers out of the backfield too. We improved the O-line, we have so much better LB depth, our DL depth is much improved, even w/o Suh, and we may have 2 pro bowl DE’s.

Finally, since the team has announced its plans to use over-sized safety T.J. McDonald as a coverage ‘backer at times this year, that may add an extra dimension to the defense, as well. Since the Dolphins appear to be set at both conventional safety spots, with Reshad Jones and first round pick Minkah Fitzpatrick, that would seem like a good move. One thing is certain: Miami is determined to make it harder for opposing offenses to convert easy first downs and ‘chunk’ plays over the middle with their tight ends and running backs; if teams want to beat this defense by passing, they’re going to have to do it down the field on longer throws.

  40. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Steve – Most of us here speculated that for a while, but then the coaches made it clear that wasn’t the case during OTA’s. Doesn’t matter, I still think he’ll be used near the LOS sometimes with Reshad, and sometimes with Reshad and Minkah too.

Anybody remember a few years back I started talking about TE Jordan Leggett of Clemson and was going to keep my eye on him that season because I bonded his dad out of jail? I wasn’t overly impressed with him (good pass catcher) and think I only mocked him once to us out of the 100+ mocks I did on First Pick. LOL Well, I just bonded his dad out again. Last time was for bouncing a check to his divorce lawyer (ouch). This time he wasn’t in jail yet but needed to take care of a warrant for cyber stalking. Feel kind of bad for the dad. He was dating a woman and broke up with her cause he started dating his ex-wife again. The woman took him to domestic court to file an injunction on him (in spite) and the judge told the woman no cause he left you which pissed her off even more. A couple months later the dad sent the woman an email asking her to meet up so he can get the rest of his things. She added a whole bunch of crazy shit to the email, printed it out and gave it to an investigator at the sheriff’s office. The investigator didn’t even contact the dad to get his side of the story he just wrote up a warrant, got the judge to sign it and made it active (10K bond). It wasn’t until then that the investigator contacted the dad and told him he had a warrant and needed to turn himself in within 48 hours or they would come arrest him. The dad tried to explain his side to the investigator and offered up the original email only to be told that there is an active warrant and he will just have to go through the court process.

I hate when these investigators always side with a woman’s complaint without interviewing the other party. It happens here all the time.

I asked him who drafted his son and he said “The New York Jets”. I said, “OH! I can’t do this bond!” He looked so confused and asked why. I said “Cause I’m a Dolphins fan!” We both laughed and he said, “You know what? I hate the Jets also!” (He’s a Buc’s fan) After another good laugh we took care of the bond paperwork. (The ex-wife was the one posting his bond, LOL).

He said Jordan was out most of the year last year due to injury but is back 100%. We will see. He is getting married in Destin, FL during his summer break and his dad said, “and I got to mess with this shit.” LOL

Thought it was a good share.

ORob, Mets fans are pretty much done with this team as currently constructed. They need to blow it up. They can bring Tebow up but not many fans will really give a shit. He’s batting .256 in AA and that’s because he’s currently on a hot streak. LOL
    ______________________________________________________________

You’re right, he is on a hot streak, Tim Tebow was named an eastern league all star, he’s playing great with the Binghamtom rumble ponies batting .306 in the month of June, he’ll put butts in the seats, it’s worth a try, it won’t be a problem if he can’t hit major league pitching because neither can anyone on the mets currently

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Right, so who cares? Tebow is a 30 year old minor league baseball player who is not very good. If you know anything about age and minor league baseball, that’s not good.

#2) HEY MANITOBA!!!! – – I SAW the Jets drafted Nathan Smith in round 3 of the recent NHL draft. Smith is believed to be the FIRST NHL DRAFT PICK born in Tampa Bay. Smith, a high scoring forward, starred for Mitchell High School in the Lightning high school hockey league right here in Pasco County just a few miles from our home. And, yes, there are several hockey rinks right here in Tampa Bay, thanks in no small part to the Tampa Bay Lightning. It’s my understanding that Smith intends to play NCAA major college hockey at Minnesota State. However, if the Jets offer him enough money, my guess is he’ll move right into their minor league hockey system and delay going to college.

Smith will follow 10 other Florida-born NHL hockey players who have made their marks in the NHL. And, I’m sure, this is JUST THE BEGINNING of a trend that has seen a major increase in hockey in the Sunshine State.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Not even close to thinking elite yet, but yeah Howard seems to get what he needs to do and seems Minkah already did. Remember that story about him being there in the morning before everyone else at a Bama game checking out film to get ready for what he needed to do come game time?

  58. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Steve — I think we can have a top 10 D, but to me elite is something special. Agree that the secondary could be elite as a unit and same with the DEs, but think we are pretty average at DT and LB plus one CB spot. And that is like 5 spots on the D. Would be real happy with that top 10 D though.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I want our D to be more of a playmaking defense – sacks, FF, FR, INTs and scores. Don’t care as much about the rankings if we do that. You can give up some yards, but keep the score manageable.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I think our LBs will be very good, and make our DTs better than they are, because it will be a matchup group, one with moving parts based on opponent and situation. If we’re having matchup issues we can play different guys. Between McMillian, Kiko, Baker, TJ and Anthony we’ve got lots of options

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Part of the problem last year with the LBs was there wasn’t much continuity. Timmons was on his last legs and went AWOL for a week. That’s why nobody has signed him this year. We signed Maualuga late when McMillan went down, he’s also still unsigned and a FA this year. We traded for Anthony early in-season so he had to get up to speed. Allen was a rookie learning on the fly. Hull is a backup and STs guy and then he got hurt. Alonso was kind of hung out to dry with no stability around him. That won’t be the case this year so already it’s a better group as long as we don’t get hit with a bunch of injuries.

  59. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

OD, my thermometer on my deck is reading 105 today and it’s not directly in the sun. It is really hot today.

  60. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Our main LBs are Alonso (legit but not spectacular) plus two Ohio state guys who have never played an NFL game and a retread we got for a 5th. Maybe they surprise….. but you get the idea.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Anthony isn’t really a retread, we traded for him. He’s still on his first NFL contract. Everyone wanted us to draft LBs so when we do now they have no experience. LOL

Don’t count out Chase Allen, he played well for a rookie UDFA and he should be even better in his 2nd season. Yes we do have a lot of young and UDFA LBs competing this year but that’s better than vets who can’t play anymore.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Stanger, that said I’m not sure Anthony is an every down LB. He might be more of a role player where we can utilize his strengths which is size and speed. I think he’s better attacking than reacting.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Anthony was a first round pick and got traded for a 5th on his rook contract. Maybe retread is the wrong word, but to me at least hasn’t been gangbusters since draft day.

And am real happy with us drafting LB in the last two draft cause was a real need and both seem promising. But that doesn’t change that they haven’t played an NFL game yet. So how am I supposed to say we have a better than average LB corp?

  61. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Stanger, you don’t have to say better than average LB corp. No doubt there isn’t much of a body of work to go by. My point was that at least all the LBs we have are younger and faster than in previous seasons and they’re all in the building from the get go rather than the patchwork we’ve had to do in the past. Hopefully another UDFA surprises.

The vet LB Terence Garvin we signed is most likely a STs guy kind of in the mold of Spencer Paysinger. Unless he’s one of those late bloomers who steps up his game and has one of those out of nowhere seasons.

I think Baker could find a nice role for us being that he can cover a lot of ground. McMillan solidifying the MIKE is key to this group. That will allow Alonso to attack more which is his strength.

Had a great rookie season for Saint in o15,
(one we wouldn’t have likely realized via an Edmunds of o18)

Saints D got changed up in o16, throwing a wrench in Anthony’s gears

o17 comes to Miami, takes a minute to get comfortable,
starts regaining confidence, suddenly has more experience with what Miami wants from him than what Saints wanted in year two, starts making some plays towards o17’s end

Goes into o18 off-season as the likely, and confident starter he was as a rookie,
(with more knowledge of what team wants from him than ever before in his career)

I think we’re like serious strong with one through 4,
    and 5 – 7 ain’t no slouches either!!!

it certainly is due to the fact that most of these guys have been playing since their teens and at the age of 30 if they haven’t made the majors yet it’s unlikely they will. this is not the case with Tebow due to the fact he hasn’t been playing that long so his age isn’t a factor as of yet.

ESPN has an article For the Dolphins to contend for the playoffs, here’s 5 guys that can make that happen: RT, Drake, Tunsil, Quinn, and McMillan.

They said Drake has bulked up, ready to take on the load of a #1 RB.

I don’t see anything too outrageous that any of these 5 guys need to do to make that happen. RT has been reported as good to go and back to his old self. Drake needs to continue doing what he did at the end of last year. Tunsil, just needs to be solid, and with the help of Sitton not being a hack it shouldn’t be too hard. If Quinn repeats last years 8.5 sacks it will be more than we’ve gotten in a while at RDE. All signs say McMillan is the real deal, and has been just as impressive this year as last.

Bottom line is we don’t need a super year from any of these guys to make the playoffs. I mean we may get that, because the team plays better, but we just need these guys to do their job, not go above and beyond.

  75. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Rob – Tebow doesn’t really have much upside in baseball. He basically is what he is right now, whether he played baseball all his life or not. If it wasn’t for the Tebow “brand” no one would ever talk about him. He’s still at AA level, and after 648 AB’s, he’s batting .236, with 13 HR’s, which for a man 6’3″ 245 kinda sucks, it’s a HR every 50 AB’s. He’s not a particularly good fielder either, so there’s no realistic plan to bring him up to the major leagues. If they do, the reason will solely be the Tebow name, and not Tebow the player.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Hardcore Mets fans won’t care if Tebow comes up to the bigs but there may be a few thousand people who will go to just see him play. But it would be more of a novelty thing, not anything meaningful for the team.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Good assessment, but I don’t think he’s peaked yet, and still has a chance to. I agree it isn’t likely though.

Thats career number Mikey, baseball is about what are you doing for me now and right now he is .257 5hr (1pers 40 AB’s) 12 doubles and 30 RBI’s.

Coaches are talking well of him its not just fans. I dont really have a dog in this fight, i like the guy, but i dont care about that team like you guys do, and i dont really care much about his baseball career for that matter. He was my college QB and i wouldn’t mind seeing him playing for Spurrier in this new start up league.

I still think he should be given credit for improvement, and as the competition has gotten harder, he has also played better. IMO if you take the fan love and fan hate out of the equation, he is like a lot of minor leaguers who are hacking out a life for themselves in the minors.

For what its worth, the coaches and scouts are saying right now he still looks like a minor league player but he is making more progress than they are use to seeing of a guy who entered the minors at the level he did to where he is now.

I mean yeah you are right there are going to be people who become fans because they are Tebow fans and not hardcore Met fans, but you cant hold that against the guy, and you cant look down on what he has accomplished so far. The spectacle of Tebow isn’t his fault, this shit was pretty much built by ESPN.

      • D's avatar D says:

Oh and i just checked and on your AA team in Binghamton, he is your 2nd best overall batter. Only one player has better power numbers to go along with a better batting average and he is the best on your team in driving in runs, better than 8 RBI’s over the next closest guy.

  76. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    Tim

It would basically be the same thing if Tebow was signed by an NFL team. His name would have people curious, but his value to the team itself is very little.

    • D's avatar D says:

I disagree, but it would take a full commitment to his style of football to do it and that’s not what coaches want to do. You box a coach in with game plan if you have to stick to a more limited set of plays and while I think he could be successful, simple systems usually get figured out and shut down eventually and then there is also his health taking the kind of punishment it would to play that system in the NFL.

I think at this point the best bet for him in the NFL would be at TE of a HB/TE kind of hybrid. He doesnt care to make that transition, which i think is his prerogative, but the NFL isnt really made for his and a bunch of other College QB’s style of play. Its sad because he was an amazing player in college, his accuracy was great, his production was unbelievable, but thats why you can go from a heisman to a unemployed NFL player, because sometimes their game just doesnt transition to the NFL. Ask Vince Young, ask Johnny Manziel, ask RG3, ask Matt Leinart, ask Troy Smith, Tim Couch, Danny Wuerffel, Jason White, Ty Detmer, Geno Toretta, Andre Ware, or Pat White……

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

What do you disagree with? You think Tebow would be a big deal at TE? Can he even catch the ball, run a route? He completed less than 50% of his passes, so I don’t care if you commit to his style, he’s not an NFL QB, period.

  77. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

KV – I think Anthony has shot to be a good NFL player, especially if he really digs in and watches films, really listens to his coaches and absorbs what they tell him. His athleticism and size are definitely on par w/Tremaine Edmunds, except Anthony is 26, and Tremaine Edmunds just turned 20, so he has a lot more time to learn, and I think ultimately, Edmunds will be a better player. This year, if we didn’t get a shot at Mayfield, I wanted Edmunds, son of Ferrell, our own blood. The thing is, if Anthony willing to dig in and learn, or will he continue to just rely on his athletic talent?

D – The fact that Tebow might be our best AA player speaks more to how shitty the Mets farm system is currently rather than Tebow’s talent. That’s why I’m 100% in favor of trading deGrom and Familia, and really anyone else that brings back young talent. I’m sure Cabrera will be dealt, especially if he keeps hitting. They need to restock the minor leagues and major league club with young talent very soon.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Exactly! Not only is the Mets big club bad, they have very little in their farm system. They are years away from competing again.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Yeah, unfortunately, that’s true, but if we do bring back a bunch of young talent, I’ll be more than happy to watch the team grow. I’d much rather watch a bunch of young promising kids than see Jay Bruce, Todd Frazier, Asdrubal Cabrera, Jose Reyes and any of the older veterans past their prime.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Even if we’re a sub .500 club, I’m cool with that. If Cespedes was here all season, I’m sure we’d be a little above .500, or maybe even better, but again, I’d rather see young promising talent. If Cespedes! was tradeable, I’d trade him too, but the fucking guy may never play again! WTF, a strained quad has kept him out since may 13th, it’s going to be 2 months!

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Cespedes’ legs got too big. They weren’t that big when he first came here. He’s had issues with his legs ever since.

    • D's avatar D says:

I in no way think Tebow is ready to be brought up, and i do agree if they did so right now it would be a publicity stunt, but i do think he will eventually make the majors and i think if not rushed up for that publicity stunt, he could be a productive player. He is going to do everything he has to to progress as a player, and he has the athletic ability to get there, so i dont see any reason he might not make the team someday.

  79. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

D – The biggest reason, and I’m just speaking in regards to how baseball usually works, is that by the time Tebow is ready, if the Mets have done what they need to and traded their assets for young talent, you’re not going to have Tebow as a 33YO rookie blocking a a younger, faster player who is ready for the big leagues who may be 22-25. That’s the biggest challenge for Tebow is his age will end up biting him in the ass, because they won’t want to block the progress of younger player.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

That’s what I was saying to ORob.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I agree with that, but at the same time, if he’s getting it done his age won’t matter. Look at Kemp in L.A., no one cares that hes long in the tooth, now or before the season started.

  80. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

The loyalty to Tim Tebow is so far over the top ridiculous I cannot understand it. He was NEVER good enough play in the NFL. I don’t care what “system” you try to put him in. The craziest thing is some of the same people that disparage Tannehill will give Tebow a pass for being WAY FUCKING WORSE than he ever was.

Tim Tebow in football has won every where he was given a chance to play, The thing about Tebow was he had another dimension to his game that all QBs don’t have and that is a power running game, Teams can’t account for that and that’s why he lead Denver to the playoffs and beat pittsburgh, he also beat Miami in Miami, he lead a Denver team that was suppose to be one of the worst teams in football to the playoffs.

I’m a Hurricane fan, I don’t even like the guy but i do respect him.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Also what does Tebow have to do with Tannehill? It’s amazing how Ryan gets dragged into every friggin conversation. We could be talking about astronauts and going to space and someone would say Tannehill has never walked on the moon. LOL

Tim you really should read all the comments before asking questions, it should bring you up to speed.

Tim Tebow may have been the best player to ever play college football

  86. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

OMG! ROFLMAO! wait, wait, wait can’t stop laughing. wooooooo ……….Nope, still laughing. It didn’t take much for you to lose ALL credibility but I think you have now.

  87. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

ORob, you replied to me comparing Tebow with Tannehill. One has nothing to do with the other. I’m not Rock, so what he said had nothing to do with what we were discussing. But I’m not surprised you went there.

    • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

This shouldn’t be that confusing to you, i replied to rock as he was comparing tebow to tannehill, and you replied to me about the subject.
then you asked why we have to compare the two????

maybe you should ask Rock, it was his comparison that lead to this discussion.

I hope this explains it ….whew!!!!

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Because saying that Tebow won a playoff game as in it was all about him is a silly statement. The same with “he” beat Miami. I could easily argue Miami blew a 15-0 4th qtr lead because we weren’t a good team. Prater’s 52 yard FG is what actually beat us.

But I’m not going to continue this discussion. Just wanted to reply to this post and why I said what I said.

    ___________________________________

he doesn’t throw the football well enough to please the critics, The fact remains he’s won every where he was given a chance,

when he beat Miami in Miami how did he do that?,
    …….he rumbled in the end-zone that’s how.

how did he take a Denver team that was not suppose to win 3 games to the playoffs and on to the divisional round?

….he had another dimension to his game, he could pull the ball back and take off up the middle and bang heads with the DL and LBers and come out on top. he didn’t have to rely soley on passing.

the fact remains he’s a winner, and this can not be disputed.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Okay enjoy your Tebow praise as you bash the Dolphins. I have no interest in this old and tired subject.

      • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

I’m not bashing Miami, i’m speaking of facts that happened. I was rooting for Miami to win that day.,

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

It was like 7 years ago, why are you so into rehashing it?

      • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

Tebow had a great year that year as the starter for Denver, much better than Tannehill’s ever done.

i’m comparing Tim Tebows success compared to Tannehills as Rock brought up, i’m not re-hashing anything

I had no idea about this. This is insane. What the hell was wrong with the Mets to make this kind of a deal?

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Super dumb! I think it had to do with investments and Madoff. That is why Mets fans want the Wilpons to sell.

      • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

        exactly, Madoff convinced them

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

They will pay out nearly 30 million instead of the original 5.9. Even if you count for inflation, it’s still something like 20 million more. Wow. lol

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

I’m not sure how the math worked out with the delay in starting the payments, but Bonilla’s agent sure did him a solid as far as retirement planning. When he set this up his client was flush with money.

  90. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Tebow overachieved one season in the NFL and led his team to a playoff win which no one can take away from him. Good for him.

He’s not good enough to be an NFL QB or good enough for any other position for that matter. There isn’t a single team that has or would put him on their roster.

Both of those things are true. What more is there to say?

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Prater was really their MVP, the guy was winning games with 50+ yard FGs it seemed every week. LOL

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Well, it’s like you said. It took the team and Tebow did his share. In the playoff win, Tebow hit two big passes that were instrumental in winning. But those were the exception. You wouldn’t get that from him in most games. When you’re QB is missing standard throws by 5-10 feet, it’s clearly not sustainable, lol.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Yes no doubt, but wasn’t Prater hitting big game winners a lot that season? SNL even did a sketch on it. LOL

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Lol, I honestly don’t remember or care. I’ll take your word for it. Tebow was the QB and deserves credit for his part too. This whole discussion is goofy in the extreme. 🙂

It must be early July. We’re talking about a minor league baseball player and what he did in his brief NFL stint like 50 years ago, lmao.

  91. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

he doesn’t throw the football well enough to please the critics,

You mean his wide receivers, tight ends and running backs? Because they is who he does not throw the ball well enough to please! You have no football credibility left. You squandered it all with silly over the top BS.

  92. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Kong, Tebow usually comes up every once in awhile for some reason. This time it’s baseball with the Mets minor league team and how bad the Mets are. Once he’s done with baseball, I expect maybe he’ll give it a go in basketball or hockey, or maybe even curling. Or how about shirling? LOL

  93. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

  95. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Hey we all want to see our beloved Dolphins play an exciting season and have success. Maybe even become a perennial playoff team for a few years and a chance at a SB title. We all know how to prepare for the worst, we have lots of experience. Maybe we will soon enter an era when we don’t know how to handle too much success. I’m up for that challenge. Who’s with me?!! 🙂

  96. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    LOL Tim, that was funny!

  97. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Rob – With that logic, Kaepernick is a great QB as well, better than Tebow in fact, because he won 4 playoff games and took his team to the SB.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Don’t forget that 49ers defense and running game with Frank Gore. 😉

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

No Tim, it was only Kaepernick, it was his passing and his running that took them to the SB. Who’s Frank Gore anyway?

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

The thing that I get a kick out of when people give QBs all the credit or all the blame is as if the receivers running good routes, catching the ball and making big plays, or not doing that, is just a side bar. As if they’re not a part of it.

Football is a lot of moving parts and a lot of situations that needs good execution from all phases or it doesn’t work. We all know good or great QB play can help keep you in games, but we watched Marino and Co. put up 30, 40 and 50 points only to lose because the other areas sucked.

I want a good overall team, not relying on just the QB or one or two other players.
