Camp Battles – QB

The 2018 Miami Dolphins have put all their eggs in the Ryan Tannehill basket.  For better or for worse, the success or failure of this team will rest on the shoulders, right arm and knees of Ryan Tannehill.  This is his year to succeed, his year to finally have the successful season the Dolphins have always hoped he could reach.  In 2016, Tannehill was playing close to that level in the final 8 games he played until the unfortunate knee injury which ended up sidelining him for the rest of the ’16 season and the entire 2017 season.  This even includes the annual thrashing by the Baltimore Ravens game in which we lost 38-6.  Tannehill over the last 8 games had his best NFL stretch, playing to a top 10 QB level.  He threw for 1721 yards, with a 69% completion rate with 13 TD’s and 5 INT’s, for an excellent 100.09 NFL QBR.  This is what I’d like to see Ryan Tannehill have as his baseline, and maybe play even better, throw more TD’s, and help this team win more games.  I think it’s possible.  Gase has constructed this team as much in the image he wants as possible in 3 years.  The offensive line should be improved with Laremy Tunsil at LT, Josh Sitton at LG, Dan Kilgore at C, Jesse Davis at RG and Ja’Wuan James at RT.  He brought in Gore to teach our young backs how to conduct themselves as professionals.  Gore, Drake, Ballage and whoever have the talent to move the football.  We have some crafty veterans in Kenny Stills, Danny Amendola, and we also have the speedy slot man Albert Wilson, as well as the ultra-fast Jakeem Grant.  If Devante Parker ever plays up to his potential, we may have one of the most dangerous WR corps in the NFL.  That’s our starting QB, let’s take a look at the rest.

Brock Osweiler QB – 6’7″ 240

Osweiler came into the NFL in the same draft as Ryan Tannehill.  He was a 2nd RD pick (57th overall) to the Denver Broncos, who at that time had the great Peyton Manning as their starter.  Osweiler finally got his chance to start in 2016 and it wasn’t pretty.  Osweiler completed under 60% of his passes (59.02%), throwing for 2957 yards along with 15 TD’s, and 16 INT’s and a QBR of 72.2.  Not pretty.  In 2017, Trevor Siemian won the starting job, so Osweiler managed to play in only 6 games with 4 starts, and it wasn’t any better than 2016 for Brock.  Osweiler was drafted for near elite arm strength, but his accuracy and decision making have countered any arm talent he possesses.  He wil, face some stiff competition for the backup QB job here in Miami from David Fales, who Gase brought over from the Chicago Bears.  Maybe Gase can work some magic with the big fella, he’ll have to if Osweiler is going to ever help us.

___________________________________________________________

David Fales QB – 6’2″ 213

Fales was the backup QB in Chicago when Jay Cutler was the QB.  During the 2016 season, the Bears employed 5 different QB’s when Cutler struggled with injuries, with names such as  Jay Cutler, Matt Barkley, Brian Hoyer, Cameron Meredith, and of course David Fales.  Fales only appeared in one game for the Bears that season, and it was very late in the game.  In 2017, Gase brought Fales to the Dolphins (Along with Jay Cutler after Tannehill was ruled out for the season).  Fales appeared in the final game of the 2017 season against Buffalo,  and played fairly well in a 22-16 loss.  That was the fateful game where Landry was ejected for extracurricular activities.  So not a huge body of work to see, but I do recall Fales looking pretty good in the 2017 preseason, for what that’s worth.  Fales definitely has a chance to be our backup, especially if Osweiler continues on his current trajectory.

__________________________________________________________

Bryce Petty QB – 6’3″ 230

First off, if the NY Jets cast away a QB, why would ANYONE even look at them?  Petty was a fiery, competitive, team leader for the Baylor Bears.  Yes, it was a spread offense, as many college offenses are, so he needed a lot of work playing under center and going through progressions.  Well, he didn’t progress well in the NY Jet organization, and when he did get a chance to play, it was pretty miserable.  As a draftee, he was a QB who had better than average arm strength, good size, and very good leadership characteristics.  He led Baylor to 2 back to back Big 12 championships.  He had a great college career with impressive stats and pedigree.  He will be a dark horse to even make the team, we have carried 2 QB’s in the past, including last season until Fales was added to the roster in late October.  Petty has little time to really impress to earn a roster spot here, and it’s very unlikely he can pull that off.

So that’s where we stand at the QB position.  It’s basically Ryan Tannehill or bust, and I’m actually OK with that.  I feel like with a better O-line, Sitton on the left side next to Tunsil, and Kilgore opening up holes for our run game, it will make things easier for Tannehill as the Dolphins offense will be more efficient.  Hey, I waited till the very last paragraph to mention we actually drafted a TE, TWO of them!  As we all know, a TE can be a QB’s best friend, and now Tannehill has at least 2.  I’m excited to see our new offense take the field.  This truly will be a team effort, and we will not be relying on any 1 superstar to take over a game.  We have plenty of options on offense, with the aforementioned WR corps, with Gore, Drake and Ballage, as well as the TE’s Gesicki and Smythe and maybe Derby, Gray or Escobar, whomever wins that 3rd TE spot.  I wouldn’t take any one Dolphins player in a Fantasy Football league this season, I think a lot of our players are going to be involved, we’re really going to spread the ball around.  This is ideal for #17.

GO DOLPHINS!

      ▪ Incidentally, we’re told that if the Dolphins had not had the chance to draft Minkah Fitzpatrick at No. 11, their next choice would have been Virginia Tech linebacker Tremaine Edmunds or a trade down.

The loyalty to Tim Tebow is so far over the top ridiculous I cannot understand it. He was NEVER good enough play in the NFL. I don’t care what “system” you try to put him in. The craziest thing is some of the same people that disparage Tannehill will give Tebow a pass for being WAY FUCKING WORSE than he ever was.
    ————————————
Rock, there is no loyalty to Tebow, he was the UF QB, and thats my team but he hasnt been a UF QB for a long time. I dont disaprage Tanny, but like anything i point out whats wrong with his play. I will do the same with Tebow. People dont get as bent as you and Tim do by simple mention of his name without having issues with him on a personal level. So clearly your you hatred of him is over the top ridiculous as well.

He absolutely could have been good in the NFL had the coaching staff with the vision of how they were going to use him stayed in Denver. Still, as i said, it would have taken the right system, one designed around his play style and not having him adapt to another. Also like i said i dont think a coach should have been forced to make such concession, but the coach that hired him in the first place wasn’t being “saddled” with him, he had a plan on how to use him.

The guy was a 67% completion QB in college with 55 total TD in one year, 33 passing 22 rushing. He holds a record for the most combined TD by a college player…ever… So you cant sit there and tell me the guy couldn’t play and that he never could have played. You can say that his game didnt translate to the NFL, and you could tell me that he wasnt a good fit for most offenses, but had Denver done what Carolina did, committing to Tebow the way they did Cam, i can tell you it would have been a different outcome.

I dont see one post thats an over the top defense of Tebow, but i see some pretty friggin wild reaction to anything not derogatory towards him. I think its pretty sick that you guys have so much animosity towards him. Be pissed at the media if you want to be pissed at someone over the circus around him, the guy hasn’t done anything to bring that kind of shit down on him.

    • D's avatar D says:

Tanny is a better overall QB than Tebow, ill admit to that, i feel he has a more rounded QB skillset and is less of a system guy. If i had to choose a QB im picking Tanny over Tebow, but again, i dont think that is saying Tebow is a cock faced arse goblin with. The guy took a horrible Denver team and led them out of a 1-4 start to an 8-8 season. I know te team also did their part, but Tebow led them, Tebow pulled off some shit to get them in position to win, he did that with the same team that wasn’t rallying behind Orton. You cant be a big rah rah the team contributed without giving him credit too, that be the most ridiculously stupid statement ever. BTW Tebow never said he was the only reason they won, so i think you guys are pissed at the wrong people, go back and watch his post game interviews, he thanked God and his teammates every time.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

For the record what people don’t want to talk about with Tebow in 2011 is at 8-5 the Broncos controlled their own destiny but lost their last 3 games getting blown out by the Pats and Bills and losing 7-3 to the Chiefs last game of the season. They backed into the playoffs at 8-8, they weren’t lead by anyone.

That said, I have nothing against the man personally. He seems like a nice guy and I don’t care about his faith. It was the overhype around him that became obnoxious to me and many others as he completed less than 50% of his passes and the moment he did something good, all the bad was forgotten. It was always about Tebow, nobody else, and we all know that was a farce. Not his fault for the hype, but it was ridiculous.

It was an example of how the media can make or break someone. People think he was mocked too much, he was glorified more than he was mocked.

Unlike some of you i’m not ready to anoint our QB a superstar until he passes a requirement, and that would be success.

BTW.. Tebow didn’t do Shit that whole game against the Steelers until his receiver broke loose on a slant. Denver’s defense was the only reason they were in that game. Ask Rock about a game he was eye dripping at halftime against the Texans . Tebow never had a game like that as a pro. 🐕🖕

I LOVE Tim Tebow as a man, competitor, and for his beliefs. However, he’s never exactly been a stellar professional athlete in terms of ANY kind of consistency. And that’s part of the interest in him… he SPARKS when he’s counted out and against all odds: he’s like *magic*!

But aside from his *magic*, I feel he’s just not consistent enough to rely upon as a pro-athlete.

His biggest failure? Never tying the knot with Lolo Jones! I LOVE HER! I think she’s one VERY attractive woman, and she’s a GOOD person!

JUST FINISHED WATCHING the Marlins’ 3-2 10 inning win over the Rays. Watched parts of it on the Rays’ network and parts of it on the Miami broadcast. Didn’t hear any mention of the attendance, perhaps because it was virtually non-existent. At no time did I see 5,000 FITS (Fannies in the Seats) during this close and, at times, entertaining game. While I’d guess perhaps 7,000-8,000 tickets to this game may have been sold, at least half of those tickets went unused. The almost total lack of support for both of Florida’s MLB franchises is due, in my opinion, to past and current ownership and the total lack of a salary cap/floor in major league baseball.

In Miami’s case, the 3 total tear-downs of the Marlins’ franchise has led their dwindling group of followers NOT to trust ownership’s dedication to building a winner. And who can blame them? After winning the ’97 World Series, Wayne Huizenga blew up the team and then sold them to John Henry for a nice profit. After winning the 2003 series,Jeffrey Loria blew up the team and conned the City of Miami into building him a state of the art retractable domed stadium. Then he sold the team to the current group of owners for over 1.2 Billion dollars and they blew up the team FOR A THIRD TIME!!! The result is a Marlin franchise stuck in a city where nobody trusts, or believes in management’s promise to “build a winner.”

Tampa Bay’s situation is a bit different. They built a pretty awful and ugly stadium in a city of poor people. St. Petersburg is a city top heavy with retirees and some young people trying to get by on below average salaries and pensions. They can not, for the most part, afford to attend MLB. And the big corporations are mostly on the TAMPA side of the bay, so they have little interest in supporting the Rays. Ownership traditionally spends about one-third as much on salaries as do the Rays divisional rivals in New York and Boston. Local fans ARE QUITE AWARE OF THIS hideously unfair situation and have become reluctant to support a franchise that has no chance of success. Talk of an MLB hard salary cap (and FLOOR) is not happening at MLB headquarters in New York. The richest owners are quite happy with a system that sucks the life out of at least half of their franchises. SO Tampa Bay sports fans have turned to supporting a pro franchise that BENEFITS from a league-wide salary cap and a hard floor—THE NATIONAL HOCKEY LEAGUE’s Tampa Bay Lightning, which sold out EVERY HOME GAME THIS SEASON!! The outlook for the Lightning remains bright, given MLB’s opposition to salary caps and floors.

Since there is NO CHANCE the voters in Tampa Bay will foot the bill for a Miami-like retractable domed stadium, I predict that sometime in the next 6-10 years, the Rays will move to any city who will build them a new stadium and won’t mind the fact that Rays’ ownership will stick to spending about a third of what the Yankees and Red Sox spend on salaries. And, yes, I DO BELIEVE that at least one city eventually will step up and foot most of the bill for a new Rays stadium!

The bottom line is this: MLB will continue to loose its fan base to the NFL and to the NHL, both of whom have a WORKING, COMMON SENSE, SALARY CAP AND FLOOR that gives fans reason to believe that THEIR HOCKEY TEAM OR THEIR PRO FOOTBALL TEAM actually has a chance to compete NEXT SEASON, even if their NHL or NFL owner is a bit of a doofus.

    • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

I disagree, The Tampa bay Rays are a very successful team, the owners may pocket 80 mil per year! and when you watch them on TV you support them.

    WTF?????
    https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/way-too-early-nfl-week-1-best-bets-ride-the-saints-at-home-and-bet-against-the-afc-east/

    Titans (-2.5) at Dolphins
On the opposite end of the spectrum from the 49ers are the Dolphins, who exactly nobody is excited about, but still seem incredibly overvalued here. Sure, Miami is home for this game, but what exactly does this version of the Dolphins do well on either side of the ball? The Dolphins let go of their best offensive (Jarvis Landry) and defensive (Ndamukong Suh) playmakers from last season and replaced them with, like, Albert Wilson and nobody, respectively. Ryan Tannehill’s return to the lineup should make the offense a bit more efficient than it was last season with Jay Cutler at the helm but the defense figures to take a large step backward without Suh wreaking havoc up the middle.Add in the bump the Titans should get from no longer running their patently ridiculous “exotic smashmouth” offense, which will now be more versatile after the addition of Dion Lewis and more explosive with a full season of Corey Davis; as well as the presumptive defensive improvement they get from the additions of Malcolm Butler, Rashaan Evans, and Harold Landry, and the Titans look like a strong playoff contender giving less than a field goal to one of the AFC’s worst teams. Take that bet and run.

Logical analysis of our team is that on paper we look worse, the truth about this team is that we are in a better starting spot this year than we have been in past few years. OL definately feels less unstable than it has previously, but we do have legit ?’s to address. I could see this team where we were last year if things dont pan our right with some of those picotal positions and playoff bound if it does pan out. TE is a big ? but there is reason to be excited. QB is a ? but there is reason for hope. OL is a ? but feels solid for a change. LB is a ? but hopeful getting McMillan back. S/CB seems like a strong spot this year instead of a very unstable spot. I dont see that analysis as really unwarranted, its just a glass half empty view and we are looking at it as a glass half full

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

The guy makes it seem like Landry was the only WR we had. No mention of our RBs, TE Geisicki, pass rushers or potential in the secondary. It came off as very uninformed to me, not glass half empty. Yet all the Titans additions are superb. LOL

It’s like when the draftniks start putting out what our needs are early on and some of them are so pathetically wrong. I think part of it is the situation your teamis in. In NE you bet they are all about some homerism articles. In Miami where we havent had sustained success in over a decade people are pissy toward the team and got tired of the same homerism. Now we are at a point where i think people are tired of the bashing thatthe local media does, so imo you want to be on the front of a trend, its time to start at least being fair about the assessments of the team and stop with the unrelenting bashing.

Even if he finishes in the 40’s which could happen, it’s what he brings to the table with his size and catch radius and red zone. I’d be happy if he had 40+ receps 550-600 yards and 4-5 TDs. I would expect those numbers to go up throughout his career though.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

You brought up two others….. only other possible other one would be Stills.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Most catches to me is very open at this time until we see how this offense is being run. Could be Stills, Parker, Amendola, Drake or Wilson. We signed Wilson to a decent chunk of change so I expect he will be a focus in the offense. They’re working him at all the WR spots and he didn’t really do that in KC. He was mostly slot and bubble screens as a 4th option and still had 42 receps.

  40. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I think the receiver with the most receps will be in the 70’s. Not sure who though. I can see a lot of guys in the 40’s, 50’s and maybe 60’s with the one guy at the top in the 70’s. Obviously more spreading the ball around than in the past.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Yeah — gonna be a lot of ball spreading going on. And that is a good thing. We had less than 400 completions last year, even if we beat that only so much ball to go around.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Stanger, no team had 400 completions last year – NE lead the league with 389 and we were tied at 6th with NYG at 373.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Was just throwing out a round number. We had 373 last year…. that’s less than 400. 🙂

  41. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Also being that Drake had 32 receps in less than half a season getting significant snaps, he could easily be in the 50’s if not more.

  42. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Stanger, what I meant is 400 completions is a lot for any team.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Yes it is. And unless we go all pass to run, my guess is we might not beat that 373 this year, but that our total passing yards go up. Landry was a real good player in a lot of ways but he dragged down out yards per catch. And now we’ll have Gesecki at TE.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

If we’re more balanced as many of us hope this year, 350 completions should be about the number. We had 602 attempts last year because we trailed in so many games and our YPA was tied with GB at 28th at 6.3. For comparison we were tied for 5th with NO and SEA in 2016 at 7.8.

  43. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Another thing about that CBS article, what has Titans WR Corey Davis done to get the nod as a difference maker this year? 11 games, 9 starts, 34-375 11.0 0TD. He’s proven nothing at this level. Not saying he won’t be good but based on what? Oh right selective projection. LOL

2 or 3 more plays per drive and ( a few more first downs per game) and all the “good stats” will go up, including the most important. W’s.

OcalaRob; Saw your reply to my comments yesterday re: the Marlins and the Rays. In today’s TAMPA BAY TIMES, sports writer Martin Fennelly, who, unlike you and me, gets paid to cover the Rays, states that when the folks who run MLB decide “that this state isn’t big enough for two teams and wheels in the moving vans,” it will be the Rays who will be moving. He goes on to explain WHY this is so in a well thought out article you might want to read.

  52. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

This is a concern of mine, do you see how the pressure comes from Tannehills left? the DB that was covering the slot rec blitzed leaving the slot guy wide open, just a quick dump off would be 6 points, Tannehill doesn’t recognize this. if the pressure is coming from the left someone has to be open on the left. and then we have the inaccurate end result.

All QB’s have those moments. He underthrew the pass, if he put some air under it, he had Cameron deep. I can’t say the decision was poor, and I don’t agree that was the teeth of the defense, it was just a poor throw the way I see it.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I get what you’re saying g Mike, but he fucked up the play from the start. Presnap read he doesn’t recognize 2 guys on the slot, one of which may blitz with a clear path. Video of Tannehill avoiding pressure, standing tall in the face of an oncoming rusher, and throwing an absolute dime 50 yds down the field without even being able to step into it because of the defender in his face.

Does posting video of this fantastic play mean Tannehill does this every play? Or that he makes the same decisions with the same outcome every time? Great players have bad plays, and bad players have great plays. Mediocre players as well. What does a video of one, some, or a few bad or good plays show?

I have concerns about Tanny. Mostly about his ability to read defenses. I’m also concerned about him getting back up to game speed after a year off. I have hope because he’s improved part of his game every year he has been in the league, and he puts the time and effort in.

I think most of us here know it isn’t a certainty that Tanny can get it done for us (or even Drake for that matter). For me, it’s a lot more fun to look at what can and might go right rather than what might go wrong, at least at this stage of the year.

Rob, if Tanny bombs out this year, or Drake bombs out, you’ll be able to feel good about having harped on it all offseason, and get to feel that self-satisfaction of having stated it clearly and unequivocally over and over.

Nobody will be able to say that you didn’t see that Tanny has had shortcomings that he didn’t improve on or overcome. Congratulations if that happens. It won’t mean nobody else saw the possibility. It just means not everybody believes that past failures mean future disappointment is a foregone conclusion. You can choose to wallow in what you see as an inexorable march towards failure, or you can see the possibility of an improved tomorrow.

Rock has posted stats showing Tanny’s yearly growth in relation to other top QBs and how he fits in favorably. Every year Tanny has improved his game. He was nearly a top 10 QB in his last playing year. Maybe he can break into that category this year, maybe not, maybe he backslides. I know his last 7 or so games played give me hope he will be the guy moving forward.

One thing we do know, thanks to the video you posted above. Tanny threw a bad interception in that game in 2015 when he had open receivers to the left.

That’s a 3rd year starter, the most basic read for a QB is to read the D to locate where the pressure is coming from, that will leave the D unbalanced on that side of the field so someone should be open, it’s basic shit, he should know that!

OCALA ROB; Thanks for posting that Martin Fennelly column up the page. Yes, sadly, BOTH of Florida’s major league baseball teams have been gutted by their owners. But the Marlins, at least, got TWO World Series Championships AND a state-of-the-art retractable domed stadium out of the deal. The Rays got NEITHER!! – – That, in a nutshell, is PART of the reason why the Marlins likely will remain where they are while the Rays likely will move out of state.
    —————–
AND, just to rub a bit of salt into the wounds, the Marlins won this year’s version of “The Citrus Series” 2 games to 1 with today’s 3-0 win. But the old trophy that used to go to the winner was retired several years ago because neither franchise wants to pay for the cost of an annual trophy!
    —————-
The 3 games combined MAY have actually put a combined 15,000-16,000 fannies in the seats! –THAT, of course, is LESS THAN THE AVERAGE ATTENDANCE FOR ONE GAME during the Tampa Bay Lightning’s season!! • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

i wish we could have a better financial structure in the majors, the big market teams won’t have it though. so it eliminates 75% of teams to make the playoffs. why would you want to follow a team that cannot possibly win. that’s why there is a lot of out of town yankee fans. some of my friends growing up in S FL are life long yankee fans, when i see them wear a yankees hat i want to rip it off their head and stomp it.

what’s really surprising is they are able to keep doing this as fans keep following. i would assume if you were getting a paycheck for say……$1500 per week.. and you were asked to take a pay cut so the rest of your co-workers could all be equal you would tell them to take a hike. but if you did that you may win in the long run due to more interest in those who are not making as much.

ORob am glad you put that out. And I think he is great too, especially with that bust it on any given play aspect. Not with you on 3rd down back cause think he is more than that, but we have Gore and Ballage now. And both can do the power game. So might make for one mighty fine trio. We’ll see how they sort out who does what.

  70. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

ORob, I think Drake will get more touches than any other player on this team this year. If not we can discuss that at another time. But when you have a guy who has as much big play ability as him, you get him the ball.

Gore will likely be on the field in crucial situations in games because he’s seen and done everything. He will likely be the short yardage back as well because he’s hard to find with how low and powerful he runs. But much like Wake, I think he’ll be a situational back at his age and there is nothing wrong with that.

I’m also hopeful that Ballage makes an impact for us as a KR and backup. He’s got a nice skill set for a big, fast back.

  71. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Slash and gash! Yes you can run the ball like this. What you also see here is it’s not often one guy gets him to the ground. We all know it’s a small body of work but it’s friggin impressive.

If the OL and TE position is solid this year, our offense is going to be hard to stop. We have a lot of speed and sick skill sets. It can come in waves all day long.

    “””So Minkah is Suh 2.0″”””

I have Minkah Fitzpatrick (over the seasons duration) starting at any one of seven different Defensive positions via ( S X 2, CB X 3, LB X 2 ). For game one, play one, if they start in base 4-3, I see him starting over Cordrea Tankersley opposite of Xavian Howard..

Anyone remember the name Byron Maxwell?? Man he went from the one, to the two, to being inactive in o17’s first 3 weeks which was when rookie Tankersley took over and did pretty well..

Maxwell never played another down and was released a month later..

I think that Tank is pretty damn good, but Fitz teamed up with X makes for a total shutdown tandem at CB!!!

As far as who ended-up as o17 DB starters. Tankersley (last witnessed) would appear to be the weakest link, (though he’s not weak in any sense). It’s just that it’s quite apparent that Fitzpatrick offers farr more proven talents, and skills..

That would be my basic Defensive lineup for getting the best 7 on the back-end, play one..

But of course. There is also the possibility that Minkah Fitzpatrick may very well start at one of the other 6 positions he excels at? Shoot Saban suggest that #29 Fitz could even play MLB in certain situations, (which makes 8 different positions he can morph into) while Butterfly-Bellied-Brady is at the LOS attempting to dissect !!

I BELIEVE that The Swiss Army Knife, Jack & Master of All Football Trades, and true leader Minkah Fitzpatrick will be farrr more valuable than the one dimensional Suh as the Future Franchise Face of the Defense!!

And we’ll have him for 5 years for the cost of one year with what we were scheduled to pay Suh!!!

Loved Suh (zero disrepect intended), but Minkah Fitzpatrick (from Anywhere and Everywhere) will be farrr more impactful and indecipherable !!

Cameron Wake still led the way, but Ndamukong Suh saw his hurries drop from 35 to 20.5, and his 4.5 sacks are the fewest he’s ever had in a full season. It all depends on how one looks at it. But for whatever it’s worth, seems like we can only go north from last season’s abysmal pass-rushing numbers.

I think Minkah will be used as a matchup guy occasionally, so that might be in the slot or on the boundary, but like Steve, I think/hope they use him primarily to play CF

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Given who our other two safeties are…. back deep is the natural fit. Do think the secondary scheme is gonna be most different though. We brought in that third safety and then put the cha ching into McCain .

At the beginning of last season Branch was playing really well and was on pace for his highest sack season until he suffered a knee injury that hampered him the rest of the season, eventually causing him to miss games and ultimately being shut down for the season.

Strange that both Football Outsiders and PFF just recently observed this…

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Now the questions becomes… can Tannehill be as good in a clean pocket as Cutler has been good under pressure. Let’s hope our O-Line is truly fixed.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

That’s a good number for Wilson being that he was drafted in 2012.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Just imagine if Wilson or Keenum were about 3″ taller…

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Or perhaps better yet, just imagine if Brees was about 3″ taller…

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Well that would make them different people so who knows. I’m sure a lot of Wilson’s TD passes were off of scrambles and keeping the play alive.

Brees is a master at his size keeping his eyes down the field and working his way around the pocket. Super accurate too.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

GRAND point, Tim. These ‘smaller’ QBs are as good as they are BECAUSE they’ve learned to adapt to their so-called ‘size limitations’.

Without a struggle, one can’t become great.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

        Yep!

  88. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I think Minkah starts out each game, unless they already know something going in, at FS, then if someone is struggling to cover a guy, he may move to that cover.

Gronkowski would be someone that may get Minkah from the start.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

And this isn’t just for Minkah, I think we’re going to be moving guys all over the place, once we see something we don’t like. Get abused against the run, take out the McCain and replace him with a 3rd safety (TJ), get beat in the slot, maybe Minkah moves there, get beat deep change something else.

Half time adjustments are going to be key for us this year.

This isn’t just relegated to the D. I expect to see lots of personnel based on matchups, then when we see the mismatch, exploit it.

Those numbers I put up the other day for each receiver was an average thing. Grant gets a mismatch and you may see him with 5 catches one week and none the next, then everyone’s wondering why Grant didn’t do anything one week. Exploit the matchups and play like an unselfish team.

And Yea, he probably had pressure on ALL’OF’EM, LOL,
    IF NOT AT LEAST 50!!!

well, I can completely understand this. you are a “look at me, look at me” guy who catches passes with one hand just to show you can (not because it is necessary) and he is a modest hard worker. two completely different personalities. I would’t hang out with you and your died hair either.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

That’s fine but that’s not all you said.

    Stanger, go to https://en.gravatar.com

sign in with your wordpress password and click on the second tab on the top of the page “My Gravatars” Then at the bottom of the page there is a clickable link that reads “Add a new image”

From there follow directions and you will have an avi instead of a blank white avi.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Thanks Rock. I know how to do it. My problem is my e-mail account started showing my gravatar avi. Was real embarrassing when was Kris Allen and trying to do serious stuff. But maybe I can find something that works both places. Gonna be real bland though.

  94. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Stanger, I always wondered who you Avi was. Now that you identify him as Kris Allen…..I still don’t know who the hell that is! LOL

  95. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

It is crazy how the internet works. How the heck does you e-mail account get linked to your Gravatar account? How does Facebook know that “I might know” these people when I completely separated my home life from my business life and the people they are suggesting are work related?

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

If you associate with friends and colleagues on FB and they associate with others, they suggest you might know them as well.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Put up an image. And one can live with in whatever. The guys talk with professionally all have just letters, but can live with this one.

  96. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

WOW! Stanger went from Kris Allen, to the Beatles White album, to Robin Hood. That’s diversification! 🙂

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Is that the real Robin Hood, you would know? LOL

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

I can deal with Robin Hood (and just one in my avi stuff). Little Kris Allen was not a good look. And maybe Robin will put up the good fight against the corporate logos. 🙂

  97. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Tim – Yes, that’s the real Robin Hood, Errol Flynn. I was there when they invented white.
